1st round update: 2-5-0 and -5.83 units

Ugly day as three of the six selected players could not break par; at least half the field did so today, so they shouldn't have won their matchups and they didn't. Paulson lost by three to Bjorn, Perry lost by six to Calcavecchia and Garcia lost by three to Cink and by four to Lickliter. Four bad plays, but maybe the other loss was a little unfortunate. Mediate lies 4th on the leaderboard, but still lost by one to Mayfair. The wins were from Janzen and Lickliter by two and one shot respectively.

At least the 72-hole plays and outrights are encouraging. All the 72-plays are ahead apart from the two involving Justin Leonard who shot 77. He has a mountain to climb to make the cut and avoid the 3-unit play being a loser. With the outrights, Singh is joint leader, Lehman is 4th and Sluman is one further shot back in 13th, so maybe the horrors of the first day could be forgotten by the end of the week!

1st round 0-1 but encouraging
Mediate lost to Mayfair by 1
Mediate shot great carding 5 under,Mayfair had better at 6 to tie for lead.
72 hole standings
Calc/Faxon 3 up
Sluman/Price 3 up
Zinger/Garcia 3 up
Durat/Leonard 7 up
Price/Roberts 3 down

Outrights Have 3 of 4 right where we want them.

3balls Mediate and Hoch @ 11/10 & 5/4 respectively won-Calc pushed-Zinger and Garcia lost.Surrey usually doesn't settle till next day so will update 3ball in units at conclusion of tourney.

Despite starting 0-1 on 1st rounder,Mediate played well and all I can ask.

Dogs or Stanley..

Could you please briefly explain how to play a three ball combo. AS I told ya'll I just opened an account at 5 Dimes.

I think that they will allow me to play some of the combos that you have posted.

I overslept this morning and missed getting in my last plays before tee off. I have to get up at FOUR fuc*ing AM here in order to place my plays! Slept in until 5:15 Arizona time just in time to see that Stanley had posted that 5 Dimes is listing most if not all of his match-ups. May end up working out just as well... since not really sure how match-ups are going this time.

Anyway... simple question.. Several comments have been made regarding 3 ball combos. I thought that I would easily understand it when I looked.. But didn't. May have just not been awake enough.. But really do not understand.

Please help

I have attempted a few times to add some levity or hilarity to a rather serious board. May not have been appreciated at times. Just want you all to know how much I have appreciated being allowed to tag along for quite a number of winning picks.

With great respect, admiration and gratitude,

AzRusty

Couple of questions
Before they changed format at pgatour.com you could get scoring by alphabetical order.
Am I missing something or is that option not available anymore?
Math Whizs: Any clue what a $10/5 man accumulator (parlay)pays with all being @ 10/11 odds?

Thanks for the reply DTB...

Guess I misunderstood. Glad there was a good reason why I couldn't figure it out this morning!

Still am happy that I went with 5 dimes for coverage of more tours and more match-ups. Also better lines on outright picks to win.

Until now all I had was Olympic.. which I am still happy with.

What does E/W 's stand for? Sorry still trying to get all this terminology down.

Thanks

AZRusty,
EW means each-way, which is betting for the win & the place.

example
Lickliter 50/1 ew 1/4 1,2,3,4 for $10

you place TWO bets
$10 on Lickliter to win at 50/1
$10 on Lickliter to finish 1st,2nd,3rd or 4th at 1/4 the odds = 12.5/1

should Lickliter win, you get paid on BOTH bets.
If he runs a place, you still make a handy profit.
Note the placings in golf are often tied, so the payout could be lower...

eg
X -20
Y -18
A,B and Lickliter -16

First and second are clearcut, so the remaining places to pay on are 3rd and 4th, but there are three players to pay on. Thus the payout is 2/3 the face value of the ticket.

Let's face it, unless you're backing Tiger every week, essentially you are backing longshots so you should be backing your selections each-way.

Also note that the terms of each-way (1/4 1,2,3,4 etc) change from bookie to bookie. Surrey & SportingOdds offer 1/4 1,2,3,4,5 - a much better deal, Hills offer 1/4 1-4 or 1/5 1-5, all Aussie books offer 1/4 1-4. These bookies will also give you updated markets after each round, and their terms will change from day-to-day (for new bets only - once you are set, you are set)

The concept of each-way betting is totally foreign to US offshores, and their computer systems aren't built to handle it, so don't expect to see any there, although Olympic offer separate win & 'show' markets.

Thanks for the reply. I have just automatically been betting the wins and places. I understood and actually won with McCarron a few weeks ago that if the winner was chosen to both win and place that you would win both bets. Which I did.

What I hadn't considered was that if there is a tie for second or third place and that one of the players is one that I had chosen that the winning might or will be cut by 1/3 or how ever many there are tied.

Thanks for the info.

Still learning.

Rusty: a little added note on E/W since you have an account at Oly.I like their option of being able to place a show wager(4 places) by itself. In the E/W way at Euros you HAVE to place win in order to get show which in effect does 2 things. If you play say 4 players you have lost 3 wagers before they tee off or another way of looking at is by paying for win also you are actually cutting your place odds in half on at least 3 out of 4.
Now the down side of playing place only is you won't hit any of these 100/1 shots these gents hit.I do bet E/W also and issues can be made for both sides.
Another plus at Oly is they pay posted odds regardless of how many tie for 4th whereas the euros tweek the pot.
Example:On $10 E/W ($20 total bet)Calc last week at 80/1 returned $105 for place when 1/4 odds was $200.My actual return for $20 invested was bout 5/1, had I'd bet $20 place only at same odds @ Oly return would have been 20/1 or $400.Of course flip side is he could have won and returned full odds on both on the E/W for a $1,000 payoff.
Another note on E/Ws is as Boris noted some pay 1/4 odds for 1st 4 places and others pay 1/4 odds for 5 places. There will be times that the 1/4 for 1st 4 places will pay more than 1/4 for 5 places in the event of a tie for 5th.
Again points can be made for each system and can't say one is right or wrong.Personally I prefer betting into a known factor for the core of bets but do bet E/W also especially after Stan and Ian pop one of those 80/1 and 100/1 longshots that they do through out the year.

2nd round update: 0-3-2 and -5.14 units

Jeez! What a first two days
frown.gif
Singh secured a push with Mayfair and Mediate came from behind to secure a push with Chalmers. Otherwise, Nobilo lost to Daly by five, Funk lost to Verplank by five and Mediate lost to Mayfair by three. Had only broke-even on 1st & 2nd round plays this year before this - something in my systems has to be changed!

Very poor day for the 72-hole plays also. Five of the seven plays were decided at the cut and four were losers. Both of Leonard's opponents missed the cut, but so did he. He lost to Baddeley by four and Scott by one. Nobilo missed the cut by one and handed a four-shot victory to Daly, while Lickliter shot 79 to hand a seven-shot victory to Norman. The only winner was Verplank, by eleven shots over Scott. In the two remaining plays, Hoch leads Norman by four and Janzen is tied with Allenby.

Nightmare tournament that could at least be rescued by the outright plays. Lehman leads the event, Singh is in a tie for 2nd and Sluman is 25th and just four shots out of a place.

In answer to your math questions regarding odds of a 5 man accumulator, each at 10/11.
I found a site www.cappersaccess.com which has a "parlay calculator" [scroll down the page, and it is under "Miscellaneous"]

I entered the following [-110] under the 4 team calculator - there is not a 5 team at this site. Betting $100 wins you $1228. By extrapolation, you would probably win between $1700 and $1800 on a 5 man parlay.

Hope this is of some help.
