Arizona governor signs immigration enforcement bill

PHOENIX -- Gov. Jan Brewer ignored criticism from President Barack Obama on Friday and signed into law a bill supporters said would take handcuffs off police in dealing with illegal immigration in Arizona, the nation's gateway for human and drug smugglers.

With hundreds of people surrounding the state Capitol, protesting that the bill would lead to civil rights abuses, Brewer said she wouldn't tolerate racial profiling. She said critics were "overreacting."

"We in Arizona have been more than patient waiting for Washington to act," Brewer said after signing the law. "But decades of inaction and misguided policy have created a dangerous and unacceptable situation."

Obama said earlier Friday that he's instructed the Justice Department to examine the Arizona bill to see if it's legal, and said the federal government must enact immigration reform at the national level - or leave the door open to "irresponsibility by others."

"That includes, for example, the recent efforts in Arizona, which threaten to undermine basic notions of fairness that we cherish as Americans, as well as the trust between police and their communities that is so crucial to keeping us safe," Obama said.

The bill, sent to the Republican governor by the GOP-led Legislature, would make it a crime under state law to be in the country illegally. It would also require local police officers to question people about their immigration status if there is reason to suspect they are illegal immigrants.

The bill takes effect 90 days after the legislative session ends in the next several weeks.

Demonstrators have been camped outside the Capitol since the measure passed out of the Legislature on Monday. Their numbers have grown steadily throughout the week, with buses bringing protesters from as far away as Los Angeles.

Brewer, who faces a tough election battle and growing anger in the state over illegal immigrants, said the law "protects every Arizona citizen."

Arizona has an estimated 460,000 illegal immigrants and is the state with the most illegal border crossings, with the harsh, remote desert serving as the gateway for thousands of Mexicans and Central Americans.

U.S. Rep. Raul Grijalva, a Democrat who opposes the measure, said he's closing his Arizona offices at noon Friday after his staff in Yuma and Tucson were flooded with calls this week, some from people threatening violent acts and shouting racial slurs.

The bill's Republican sponsor, state Rep. Russell Pearce of Mesa, said Obama and other critics of the bill were "against law enforcement, our citizens and the rule of law."

Pearce said the legislation would remove "political handcuffs" from police and help drive illegal immigrants from the state.

"Illegal is illegal," said Pearce, a driving force on the issue in Arizona. "We'll have less crime. We'll have lower taxes. We'll have safer neighborhoods. We'll have shorter lines in the emergency rooms. We'll have smaller classrooms."

Other provisions of the bill allow lawsuits against government agencies that hinder enforcement of immigration laws, and make it illegal to hire illegal immigrants for day labor or knowingly transport them.

$338.3 Billion Paid to Service America?s Illegal Aliens

$338.3 Billion Paid to Service America?s Illegal Aliens

$338.3 Billion Paid to Service America?s Illegal Aliens

-By Warner Todd Huston
My friend Gary Karlin over at the Evanston Conservative blog has spent the last year or so collecting a series of stories detailing the costs of illegal aliens to the United States.
With just the 14 news stories he highlights, the cost rings in at a staggering $338.3 Billion in money wasted by government giving freebies to illegal aliens as well as in law enforcement costs.
Free schools, free medial care, free Medicaid, free food, free social services, it?s a veritable cornucopia of freebies streaming out of our various government?s coffers to these people who broke our laws to get here and are breaking our laws to stay.

Again, I want to stress that the costs that Gary added up are only the costs as detailed in the 14 news stories he chronicles. Not mentioned is the billions of dollars that the states pay out to mollify illegals every year not to mention the other costs to the federal government that illegals incur that aren?t detailed in the stories that Karlin reviews.
Karlin pointedly asks his readers to imagine what the U.S. could have done with these billions in this harsh economy if we didn?t have to waste this King?s fortune on illegal aliens? The question is a good one to ponder.
Now I don?t agree with Gary that this unnecessary (in fact illicit) expenditure is why the economy is failing. There are far more reasons than the illegal problem dogging our great nation. But Karlin is right to point out that these billions wasted on lawless illegals is certainly not helping our economic outlook!
Just imagine what we could have done with the $338.3 Billion wasted on illegals!

Although I do agree with parts of the Bill, how do you tell if a Canadian or a Brit is illegal?

This is a slippery slope into checking everyones ID, don't you think?

No way this end goods.

They are going to just end up harassing everyone who is not white.

At least canadians have floppy heads so they can be easily noticeable.

I thought unregisterd aliens were already illegal. It looks unconstitutional to me. And for those that like this bill being passed, get ready to double or triple your taxes with less tourists, less snowbirds, no cactus league baseball, no superbowls. Not sure what the DBacks, Suns, or Cardinals are going to do, but look for some kind of lockout down the road.

Lets see:

There was the ?birther? bill approved by the Arizona House this week requiring presidential candidates to prove their citizenship by displaying birth certificates.

There?s an immigration measure that effectively converts the state?s police departments into immigration officers, mandating that they stop and question people they suspect of being undocumented immigrants.

And there?s the new gun law that allows anyone besides convicted felons to carry concealed weapons without registration or background checks.

Finally, for good measure, there?s the sideshow Republican Senate primary starring J.D. Hayworth, a serious challenger to Sen. John McCain, and his now-famous observation that same sex marriage laws would lead to men marrying horses.

So, what is the matter with Arizona?

Put a sign in your yard, I don't have a gun, so violate my rights as a citizen.

I see O is all for legalizing illegals.
--and just when I was asking myself--
--How can a person be any more irresponsible than adding largest social program in 3 decades to a spraling deficit with current programs bleeding insurmountable red ink already--

--by adding millions more to the roles of course-
-- and millions more to Da Base

"This is a formula not only guaranteed, but designed, to produce an unsustainable entitlement state. The high-rolling politician secures victory by defeating the productive, and creating a dependency class large enough to smother taxpayer revolts at the ballot box.

Yeah all the shit that the Indians get now makes up for us nearly exterminating their race.

Every comment you make is a clusterfuck of bullshit and illiteracy.

The alamo comment is great too, I am sure the history of the alamo you know of involves a John Wayne movie and a Disney movie.
