Plays:

Lining up in a traditional European-style 4-4-2 formation, the Senegalese side has no obvious Achilles' heel. In addition to being well-organised in defence around captain Aliou Ciss?, they possess a gifted and slick midfield unit led by Moussa N'Diaye and Khalilou Fadiga. But the jewel in their crown is incontestably Diouf. The scorer of eight of his team's 14 goals, he was his team's key player in qualifying, and Europe's biggest clubs are currently scrambling for his signature. Alongside him lines up the capable Henri Camara, with Souleymane Camara a potent option off the bench. Perhaps the most impressive quality of the Lions of Teranga is their fearlessness, even at the daunting prospect of facing the champions of the world. So who knows? Maybe we're all in for the surprise of our lives on May 31.

1* SENEGAL +1.5 (-120)

Flipper:

Do you really like Brazil? If so, why?

I realize that Brazil has had so much bad publicity that they may actually be a rare value pick (at least to win bracket). Trouble is -- I see nothing which suggests Brazil is anywhere near the level of play for past World Cup teams. Please explain.

Here are my selections coming out of their respective groups:

Group A
France
Uruguay

Group B
Spain
Paraguay

Group C
Brazil
Turkey

Group D
Portugal
USA

Group E
Germany
Cameroon

Group F
Argentina
Sweden ( toughest selection as England was a close pick as well)

Group G
Italy
Croatia

Group H
Japan
Russia

I will make a BOLD statment by saying that the winner of the world cup will come out from either the winner of the 2nd round game between France and the 2nd place team of Group F, or the winner of the 2nd round game betwen the winner of Group G versus the runner up of Group D.

So basically, it will come down to either Croatia, Italy, France, Argentina, England, or Sweden.

Most underated team: Sweden
Best defensive team: Italy
Best offensive team: Tie between Argentina and France
Most Penalty cards: Ireland
Fewest goals: Belgium
Most goals: Argentina

Darkhorse: Spain
Team to surprise: Japan

Did I mention I am of italian, portuguese and brazilian descent???

But my heart cheers for Italy.....

ITALIAN WOMEN DO IT BETTER
;)

Good luck to everyone, may all your bets be winners, and don't forget to visit your local PUBS during the games.....

France-Senegal

France-Senegal

It's hard to compare teams strength when they came from different part of the world and they never played before, but for me this game has something to lean on.
All of the Senegal players play in french teams, but only 7 of them in top 5 teams. None (except youngster Cisse) of France national team players play for french teams. They are just too good for French league. France and Senegal are 2 different worlds in talent, tactics, organisation, discipline etc.
I'm taking France -1.5 -109
They'll try very hard to win big and take off the pressure for upcoming games.

adding .5 unit to Sen +1.5 -120 for a total
of 1.5 units +1.5@-120

If the pre-tournament favourites have weakened without Zidane, people are increasingly starting to pay attention to Senegal. Sitting at the table of the world?s biggest football feast for the first time, they suddenly do not look like the pushovers some commentators had predicted. Qualifiers from arguably Africa?s toughest qualifying group including Algeria, Egypt and Morocco, the team coached by flamboyant Frenchman Bruno Metsu have continued to impress and are gunning to prove outspoken detractors such as Pele - who consider them the weakest team in the competition - wrong.

Senegal, with 21 of their 23 squad members playing in the French league, remained unbeaten at this year?s African Cup of Nations in Mali losing to Cameroon in the final on penalties. Shorn of big-name stars, Metsu has encouraged a formidable team ethic demonstrated by conceding just seven goals conceded in 21 matches.

Pressure

Indeed such has been the turnaround in the team?s perception since the draw was made late last year, that Senegal?s greatest danger could in fact be fear of expectation. Getting to the finals has already been a major achievement for the Lions of Teranga but despite their coach?s laid-back manner, pressure could be the key in Friday?s opener.

If they can keep their nerve against the Zidaneless champions, Senegal could just prove to be the tournament?s surprise package.

GO LIONS

Senegal +1.5 -130
Senegal +3 -160 (somehow my book let me buy a goal & a half for 30!!! (is this right?)) The bet is verified online, and with most people thinking the game will be under sounds like a solid bet.

Good luck TTM/Anders et al and thank you for all the time you have put in providing constant sources of information for our betting knowledge.

Everyone seems to be hedging towards Senegal +1.5 or the draw which looks the best play today. The curtain raiser is usaully a tight game and I see no reason for that changing this yr. I have France 2-1, but will pass and get into it from Sat morn onwards.

What a game, I don't think I have seen a game so dominated by one side and the result being a defeat. france had 13 corner kicks while Senegal had none and France hits 2 posts....

Luck was on Senegal's side and I'd rather be lucky than good...

Ireland-Cameroon
2:30 AM EST

Probable starting 11's:

Ireland:

Given
Finnan-Staunton-Cunningham-Harte
McAteer-Holland-Kinsella-Kilbane
Keane-Duff

Cameroon:

Boukar
Geremi-Song-Kalla-Tchato
Foe-Olembe-Lauren-Wome
Mboma-Eto?o

My prediction:
Cameroon 2-Ireland 1

Key questions:
1)Can Harte handle Foe's speed on the wing?
2)Will Ireland be able to recover the loss of their captain?
3)Which striker will lead his team to victory?

After watching Senegal methodically dispose of France, how can anyone expect Ireland to beat Cameroon? Sure France had their moments, but I sense that Senegal did only what they had to do to win. They seemed so controlled at times that it was almost eery. If Cameroon 2002 is as good, they win against Ireland easily.

1. Djork and various French players on the flanks looked painfully slow against Senegal, I expect the same in IRELAND-CAMEROON.

2. The captaincy issue might rally the Irish for the first 20 minutes, after that it is irrelevant. As the game wears on they'll miss his playmaking, not his arm band.

3. If Cameroon plays a disciplined game, they win regardless of the strikers.

The key for Camaroon and other African countries is to play disciplined in their half of the field. Like Senegal did, the back line kept their shape and there was plenty of support. Discipline also means not to get "unglued" if a goal is given up early. Camaroon has the finesse to play with anybody otherwise.
The Irish back line with Harte, Breen, Staunton, and Finnan will severly be tested. Harte, who has great trouble in turning and recovery speed, could get eaten alive. Important for Duff and McAteer to use their speed to the max, especially on the counter attack. Eto'o could cause a lot of damage for the Lions.

PLAYS: 1 unit on a 2 way wager Cameroon -147 & 1 unit on a three way wager DRAW +195

Denmark VS Uruguay

2 very even teams, if it comes to a draw no loss here, will take a shot at a Uruguay 1-0 victory..

Play: 2 units on 2 way odds Uruguay -102

Saudi Arabia VS Germany

I expect Germany to come out flat during their first game and for the Saudi's to play a tight defensive game.

Play: 1 unit SA +1.5 -105

Nolan,

I'm sorry I just saw your post here. Well now that I see the seeding I really think Italy has the best chance.

But I do expect Brasil to turn it on in the second round. The trick is for them to make it to the next round. This Brasil team struggled to qualify, but the reason IMO was because their top players were always in Europe and never had a chance to gel with each other. However, now that they are together for hopefully a month, I figure the longer Brasil stays in the running the more dangerous they should become.

Just my two cents. ;)
