Plus-One BCS playoff unlikely

Plus-One BCS playoff unlikely

Posted: Friday April 11, 2008 06:14AM ET

Bowl Championship Series commissioners are set to convene in late April in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The big news is nothing much is expected to happen. The Plus-One model for a modified playoff will be proposed, as promised by Southeastern Conference Commissioner Mike Slive, but the major conferences are still stalemated over the issue with four in favor and two opposed. The conferences against remain the Pacific 10 and Big Ten, which are firmly entrenched and have the benefit of a separate contract with the Rose Bowl and ABC that runs through the 2013 season. Unless the Pac-10 and Big Ten can be swayed, there probably will be no playoff before then.

Post-Spring analysis

Florida Gators

As you already know Chris Rainey exploded this spring. I?m not sure there is much more we can say about Rainey that we already haven?t. I guess I will use this time to temper some of the enthusiasm that may be building. Be careful on how quickly you reach for Rainey in the draft. He?s a solid #3 RB where you can catch lighting in a bottle on certain weeks. He could even turn into a mainstay in your RB rotation, but the consistency of his workload remains to be seen.

We are hearing good things about all the Gator wide receivers, making it tough to slot each behind Percy Harvin. Deonte Thompson, Riley Cooper, Louis Murphy and Carl Moore all have potential. If you?re looking to grab one of these guys, you?ll have to spin the roulette wheel.

Georgia Bulldogs

Dating back to last year, Caleb King?s name has been one that has been thrown around quite a bit. King had a nice spring. I wouldn?t call it a spectacular spring, but a nice spring. He?s a talented runner, and he is certainly going to eat into Knowshon Morneno?s carries. Moreno is still the lead workhorse though.

The King that really stood out was wide receiver Tavarres King. Like Rainey there is no need to rehash what we?ve already written about him.

Kentucky Wildcats

Oh boy. There was not much good news filtering out of the Wildcats? camp. Curtis Pulley and Mike Hartline are still locked in a quarterback duel, and for the most part, the offense has not sounded sharp.

Wide receiver Dicky Lyons even drew some criticism early on in the spring but rebounded nicely with a 10 catch, 148 yard and two score performance in the spring game.

The tailback spot is deep and there was little indication of a clear-cut winner coming out of spring. The two that have the most potential are Derrick Locke, who despite his size, is a young tough between the tackles runner with great speed and Tony Dixon, a vet with more power and bulk, but with a history of injury troubles. Dixon sprained his knee this spring but is expected to be ready in August. Alphonso Smith also had a big day in the spring game, rushing for 171 yards and a score on 20 carries

South Carolina Gamecocks

With Garcia still trying to find himself, Tommy Beecher comes out of spring as the #1 quarterback for the Gamecocks. I?m not sure if he won the job by default by only throwing three interceptions in the spring game versus Chris Smelley?s five, but he is the starter for now nonetheless.

Oh, and running back Mike Davis has been suspended for the opener for skipping class, another thing I was known to do a time or two. I wonder if Spurrier has any use for slow and aging tight end with some bulk in the mid-section?

One more thing. Chris Culliver is now playing defensive back. The Gamecocks keep us busy.

Tennessee Volunteers

Word on the street (or WOTS for you text messagers) is the Vols are going to put a bigger emphasis on the run game this fall. This is a run game that finished 9th in the SEC last year, and this is good news for Arian Foster owners. If he stays healthy, expect a big year from Foster.

Jonathan Crompton, who had minor elbow surgery following the conclusion of spring practices, is on our wait and see list. He is not going to get drafted in too many leagues, but he should be on your short list of guys to keep an eye on once the season starts. Running a West Coast style offense, he might not put up gaudy numbers but he should be consistent and there is plenty of offensive talent around him.

Vanderbilt Commodores

Vandy lost its one true fantasy player following Earl Bennett's graduation, so if you?ve read down this far we thank you for your loyalty, but there is nothing to see here. In all seriousness folks (try the veal), from a fantasy perspective the quarterback situation is still a mess and scrimmage reports have been mostly dominated by the defense, which may have the only fantasy value for Vandy in 2008.

Hey Dice,

I would try to keep 2-3 of those second round games on New Years day. There is nothing better than that. This format would keep all of the other bowls so these cities could still pull in their 30,000 tourists drinking beer and spending money. Too bad these college president's are losers with no imagination.

I agree....would love nothing better to watch college playoffs on New Years Day......

But, not only has the pac 10 and big 10 been against this, but also the big 12 now and same with the WAC and smaller conferences.....the smaller conference appear to be fine with never having a chance at the big game rather hoping one of their schools can make it to a bcs game so the conference can reap the benefits.......

here's the article that i read about a playoff scenario...

Matt Hayes...Sporting News

Is a college football playoff dead? Let's just say dead-ended

May 7, 2008

It was almost a throwaway line, a statement made partly in jest, but eerily foretelling.

The men behind the Bowl Championship Series had just revealed that, try as they might, the college football postseason was no closer to change and probably never would be. The faces and body language around the big table full of the sport's power brokers told the story of months of fruitless heavy lifting.

Big 12 commissioner Dan Bebee pushed back from the table, with last week's annual BCS meetings almost done, exhaled and summed up where college football is -- and how far it still has to go.

"Things change," Bebee said, "when you have funerals or retirements."

Rarely has a statement been more dead-on. No pun intended.

Forget about choosing sides; that doesn't make sense at this point. College football will stay with the controversial BCS championship format through the 2013 season and maybe much longer.

But for those who want change -- a playoff, a mini-playoff, a plus-one championship game -- there is hope, but it is years away. And getting there will require navigating a maze of twists and turns that could make even the most ardent supporters weary from the fight. The components and scenarios are there but may never align.

The reality is this argument goes nowhere without a consensus from the 11 conference commissioners. There are three camps within the group: those interested in change (SEC, ACC), those against it (Pac-10, Big Ten, Big East) and those who could be swayed (Big 12, five non-BCS conferences).

"You never say never," says Pac-10 commissioner Tom Hansen. "But I can't envision a scenario where things would change."

But if you look at it this way, here's how things could change:

Pac-10. Hansen, 70, begins his 25th season as Pac-10 commissioner this fall and most certainly will retire by 2013 -- and likely much sooner. Any new commissioner will be proactive in trying to improve the conference's standing and reputation east of the Rocky Mountains. Any postseason playoff -- or whatever you want to call it -- would dramatically improve the Pac-10's stature. It is a regional conference that needs a more national mindset.

Big Ten. Jim Delany, the sport's most powerful commissioner, is locked in. But those close to him believe he could be tempted by the athletic director job at North Carolina, his alma mater. The job is huge -- a challenging and successful 28-sport program that could intrigue Delany -- and current A.D. Dick Baddour is close to retiring.

Big East. It was only five months ago that the Big East, on BCS probation of sorts after being raided by the ACC earlier this decade, had its status renewed as an automatic qualifier for the series championship. In other words, the Big East is not in a position of power and would follow momentum.

Big 12. Bebee was very clear that the league's university presidents don't want "any type of NFL-style playoff." But Bebee, like SEC commissioner Mike Slive, has the temperament and persuasive personality to sell a system. If Slive could do it within the SEC -- a league that has won three of the past five BCS championships and benefited from BCS controversy each time -- Bebee can do the same in the Big 12, which patterns itself after the SEC.

Non-BCS leagues. How could these guys not be happy with the current setup? Hawaii received $4 million for playing in a BCS bowl. USC, meanwhile, got $1.8 million for playing in the Rose Bowl as part of the Pac-10 revenue-sharing plan. Still, there would be little resistance from the "Group of Five" because even if a playoff might mean less access, it would bring potential for significantly more money.

"I don't know if you can say it will never happen," Delany says. "It will be for future people -- commissioners, athletic directors, presidents -- to decide where this is headed."

Those talks probably won't begin until 2011, well after the series is into its second television contract with FOX. That contract will be completed after the 2013 season, the same year ABC/ ESPN's current contract with the Rose Bowl ends. Only then, the dynamics could be completely different: New leadership at the commissioner level and three network television companies (FOX, ABC/ESPN, CBS) driving up the cost of the product.

"It's on the table now," Slive says. "Everyone knows it's there. It's a marathon, not a sprint."

A race -- a debate -- that may never end.

thats an article I didnt see AR:SIB

Hopefully Delany heads to UNC, its apparent he wants no part of the proposed change and the man responsible for breaking tradition.

"I don't know if you can say it will never happen," Delany says. "It will be for future people -- commissioners, athletic directors, presidents -- to decide where this is headed."

Like Slive said, its not a sprint its a marathon and its on the table....just gonna have to wait it out another couple of years

LSU going with Hatch and Lee at QB

LSU going with Hatch and Lee at QB

it looks like lsu will be a predominently running team in the beginning of the season..wonder how their defense will be....can't wait until the pre-season magazines to come out.

The LSU Tigers head into the 2008 season with a pair of quarterbacks, Andrew Hatch and Jarrett Lee, who have little experience running the offense. "We are a brand new team," Les Miles said. "The 2007 team, they were the national champions. This is a team that has its own outcomes, possibilities and potentials. "The great news about this team is that they've been through an experience like last year to help them understand what it takes to be there." -- Shreveport Times

LSU will have their best DL ever this season despite the loss of Dorsey. 7 DL on this team will play on Sundays. LB is a concern, as only Darry Beckwith returns w/ experience. Secondary lacks experience, but has tip flight blue chip talent across the board. Miiles made a big mistake in my opinion by hiring co-defensive coordinators from within, rather than bringing in a stud. Defense should be solid as it has been all decade, but more question marls than usual based on lack of experience.

Offensively, LSU will have their best OL and stable of RBs since the 2004 Championship team. WR talent is there, but some guys will need to step it up. I think Terrance Tolliver will blossom as a true soph. LaFell and Byrd both played very well late last season. Best TE group ever at LSU.

AS for QB, Hatch is more mobile, but I like Lee. He is a coach's son, and a tough kid. His leadership qualities and work ethic are blowing people away. LSU has won both BCS titles with QBs who led by example and kept mistakes at a minimum-- Matt Flynn and Matt Mauck. I have a feeling Lee will get it done as a R/S frosh.

Al---This info is based on information from those close to the program, as well as what I've read and heard on local radio. I no longer have any close friends on the coaching staff, but I do have some second-hand contacts.

By the way, please shoot me an email when you get a chance. My laptop crashed and I lost many of my email contacts.

Wisconsin being ranked 7th is a Big Joke. Every year Wisconsin rolls up on a crappy schedule and gets a very high ranking. I do admit that Wisconsin is a good team and program but 7th in the nation?? A lot of these cheese heads believe that Buckey will win the BCS. :mj07: :mj07:

Yes new QB this year.. I have seen them ranked anywhere form 7 to 10. It is a joke, take a look of the teams they beat last year.. They lost to any team that was above average. I think they were up to 4 or 5 at one point last year. These Wisky fans are just as nuts as it gets as far as over rating their team from year to year. Totally amazing. Wisky would be .500 if they played in the SEC.

I'll enjoy it as much as possible. As a Texas Tech grad I have to enjoy it while I can. We never quite live up to what they think they will be.

Transfers to Watch in 2008

QB Demetrius Jones, Cincinnati ? The Bearcats are still hoping to get an additional year of eligibility for Ben Mauk, but head coach Brian Kelly is in good shape if he doesn?t return. Jones bolted Notre Dame early in the 2007 season, after starting in the season opener against Georgia Tech. Kelly?s offense is a good fit for Jones and assuming his shoulder is 100 percent following surgery, he?ll be a top 50 fantasy quarterback. Out of spring practice, Dustin Grutza was named starter, but with more time to heal his shoulder and pickup Kelly?s offense, we like Jones to be the starting quarterback for the Bearcats.

QB Mitch Mustain, USC ? Going from Arkansas to USC isn?t looking like a great decision for Mustain. Even though Mustain was one of the top rated quarterbacks out of high school, all indications point to him backing up Mark Sanchez in 2008 and 2009. Sanchez was named the starter out of spring practice and barring injury, Mustain will hold little fantasy value.

QB Jevan Snead, Mississippi ? Even though new Mississippi head coach Houston Nutt loves to run the football, he has to be excited about Snead?s potential. Snead played one season at Texas, before deciding to transfer to Mississippi. The sophomore quarterback has a nice arm, along with showcasing solid mobility out of the pocket. Out of the quarterback transfers on this list, Snead figures to be the one with the most immediate impact. Consider him for a spot among your top 50 fantasy quarterbacks.

QB Taylor Bennett, Louisiana Tech ? After not fitting into new coach Paul Johnson?s offense, Bennett decided to transfer and landed in a solid spot. Second-year head coach Derek Dooley continues to recruit well and along with the progress on the field last season, has made the Bulldogs a rising program in the WAC. Bennett was not a tremendous fantasy option with Georgia Tech, but should be able to work his way into the starting role. Don?t consider the senior quarterback for a fantasy pick, but keep your eye on him if you play in a west coast only league.

QB Kyle Reed, San Jose State ? With the graduation of Adam Tafralis, the Spartans are starting over under center. Head coach Dick Tomey has gobbled up a few Pac-10 transfers since coming to San Jose, but Reed is the biggest catch. The former California quarterback was rated as the No. 10 quarterback in the country by ESPN.com and was an All-American by SuperPrep. Reed was unable to participate in spring practice due to a broken bone in his foot. Myles Eden exited spring practice as the starter, but we expect Reed to win the job in the fall. With his athletic ability and potential, fantasy owners should keep a close eye on his progress as the season inches closer.

QB Kirby Freeman, Baylor ? Thanks to graduate level courses not offered at Miami (but were offered at Baylor) ? Freeman was able to transfer to Waco for his senior season. Even though the senior had his share of struggles during his career at Miami, there is reason to consider him for a late round fantasy pick. With Art Briles jumping into the head role at Baylor, the offense will be fantasy friendly and whichever player wins the starting job will be a fantasy option. Coming out of spring practice, Freeman held a slight edge over Robert Griffin and Blake Szymanski. Assuming this former Miami quarterback wins the job, Briles and his offense will give Freeman plenty of opportunities to throw ? making him a top 75 fantasy quarterback.

QB Zach Frazer, Connecticut ? Frazer joins former teammate Demetrius Jones on the list of transfers to watch in 2008. However, Jones and Frazer would appear to be on different levels heading into this season. Jones figures to immediately contend for snaps, while Frazer will spend 2008 backing up Tyler Lorenzen.

RB Emmauel Moody, Florida ? Just a guess, but I?m betting most fantasy owners are quite familiar with Moody?s transfer to Florida. Although he was hyped in the spring as the answer to the Gator running back problems, Chris Rainey stole the show and Moody struggled to pickup the offense. Even though he had a few problems in the spring, Moody is still an instant fantasy impact player. However, he will be splitting carries with Rainey.

WR Damian Williams, USC ? Williams and Mitch Mustain were teammates at Arkansas, but both have decided to bolt to the west coast. Williams had a solid freshman season with the Razorbacks, but played in an offense that was mostly geared towards the run. The Trojans have a plethora of options in the receiving corps, but the team would like to see a little more consistency. This sophomore receiver should contend for a starting spot, but take a wait and see approach on his fantasy value ? especially with four talented and experienced receivers returning in 2008.

WRs Slick Shelley/Andrew Norman, Tulsa ? The Golden Hurricane aren?t short on offensive weapons, but these transfers will add immediate depth and ability to the receiver position. Shelley transferred from Tennessee, while Norman comes from Kansas. It?s hard to gauge the impact they will have with Brennan Marion and Trae Johnson returning, but don?t be surprised if these two players are solid contributors in 2008, while making a move for more playing time in 2009.

WR Jeremy Bruce, Akron ? With the graduation of Jabari Arthur, the Zips desperately need a go-to receiver to emerge. Bruce didn?t have huge numbers while at West Virginia, but a thin receiving corps has allowed him to emerge as a starter in spring practice and is someone to keep your eye on in deep fantasy leagues.

WR Nyan Boateng, California ? Considering the loss of DeSean Jackson, Lavelle Hawkins and Robert Jordan, this former Florida receiver should figure immediately into the mix. Boateng?s playing time was limited with the Gators, but the Golden Bears desperately need for receivers to emerge and this talented junior may be the answer.

WR Jamere Holland, Oregon ? This former USC receiver is definitely someone fantasy owners need to monitor in summer drafts. Although Jaison Williams is the team?s top target, the rest of the corps is looking thin ? but this all depends on a quarterback settling into the position. Nate Costa and Justin Roper exited spring practice as the top two quarterbacks, but Holland has been working closely with incoming freshman and intriguing talent Darron Thomas. Holland has the talent to start right away, but do the Ducks have a quarterback capable of making him a top 75 fantasy receiver?

WR Andrew Diomande, Vanderbilt ? If there is a sleeper on this list, Diomande would be it. The former Clemson receiver has four receptions in his career, but the Commodore coaching staff believes he could make an impact in 2008 ? especially with Earl Bennett gone to the NFL. Wait and see how the quarterback battle pans out before taking a gamble on Diomande.
