Jewel of the class:

Georgia?s lowest maintenance recruit A.J. Green may turn out to pay the highest dividends. The wide receiver from Summerville is regarded as the best receiver Georgia. At 6-4, 190-pounds Green has the size and the speed to make an immediate impact.

You would like to be able to give (Matthew) Stafford as many weapons as he can get,? said recruiting coordinator Rodney Garner.

As a senior, Green had 72 receptions for 1,437 yards (20.0 avg.) and 15 touchdowns. He was courted by several programs but has been committed to Georgia since his junior season.

Immediate impact:

There could be a handful of players who immediately play for Georgia. This first, and most important of those, is center Ben Jones. The Alabama product enrolled at the midyear and is being groomed to take over for Fernando Velasco.

Offensive line coach Stacy Searels told the crowd gathered at Butts-Mehre as of today Chris Davis would be the starting center in the spring. But Davis has had a hip injury to deal with this offseason.

?I think he is going get after it,? Richt said of Jones. ?I think he is going to compete. I don?t think some guys are going to like it much, but some players (as in Jones) don?t worry about that.?

Running back could be another position to be quickly bolstered by the incoming class. Richard Samuel and Dontavius Jackson are already enrolled. Both will have a chance to compete with Caleb King for playing time behind Knowshon Moreno.

?I am not so concerned with saying he is one and he is two,? said running back coach Tony Ball about the pecking order. ?Let?s just continue to get better and improve and work. Now going into the season I will say now this guy stood out a little bit more than the others. And early in preseason I will take that same look and then soon after that make a decision as to who is No. 1, who is No. 2 and who is No. 3.?

Wait a year:

Cornelius Washington was the first player to commit to Georgia. Because of that the defensive end from Burke County flew under the radar when it came to recruiting. But he might be one to watch after a redshirt season.

?He is a great looking specimen,? Garner said. ?He was here on his official visit and he looked like one of these Greek Gods. There is a tremendous upside.?Washington has the frame to add weight but already has solid speed at the defensive end position. At Burke County last season he had 55 tackles including 44 solo, six sacks, 18 tackles for a loss, forced three fumbles and registered seven QB pressures.

Still the 2009 class has the potential to be the smallest class signed by Richt at Georgia. So the margin for error is also smaller. It?s quality, not quantity Georgia wants next year. With that in mind, here are 10 recruits to keep an eye on.

? Washaun Ealey, 6-0, 200, running back, Emanuel County Institute: An all everything back from ECI, Ealey is an every down back in the SEC with size, speed and durability. It?s early but if comparisons must be drawn he favors former Arkansas running back Darren McFadden. Ealey is committed to Georgia.

? Dexter Moody, 6-2, 205, linebacker, Emanuel County Institute: His coach Milan Turner compared him to Jevon Kearse, but Moody could end up being more like Thomas Davis. A quick linebacker now it will be interesting to see if he stays at that position or is moved to safety in college. Moody is committed to Georgia.

? Chase Vasser, 6-3, 208, linebacker, Chestatee: Vasser is fast enough to thrive in the SEC, but what makes him special is his tenaciousness and ability to make the sure-tackle. Vasser was the first linebacker offered by Georgia. He is committed to Georgia.

? Zach Mettenberger, 6-5, 200 quarterback, Oconee County: A true drop-back passer with a strong arm. In fact, if Mettenberger were at Georgia right now he might have the second strongest arm on the team behind Matthew Stafford. Georgia should take two quarterbacks in this class. Mettenberger is committed to Georgia.

? Chris Burnette, 6-4, 290, offensive line, Troup County: An intelligent lineman who leads a class that could have three offensive linemen in it. Burnette has feet and the power to be a solid run blocker, but has also developed the skills to pass block. Burnette was the first offensive lineman to commit to Georgia.

? Dallas Lee, 6-4, 285, lineman, Buford: Anchored the Wolves? defensive line in 2007. He finished with 71 tackles, nine sacks and a state title. Lee might be better suited for the offensive line in college. Georgia is already on top of this prospect.

? Kellen Williams, 6-5, 300, offensive line, Brookwood: Alabama, Georgia, Clemson, South Carolina. Those are just a few of the schools who are lining up for the chance to recruit Williams. Georgia has had success recruiting Brookwood in the past and Williams might be one of those three linemen targeted by the Bulldogs.

? Kevin Minter, 6-0, 230, linebacker, Peachtree Ridge: Minter was creating buzz after his sophomore season and didn?t disappoint in his junior season. A natural linebacker, Minter played defensive end as a sophomore and had 154 tackles. Georgia is only going to take two linebackers but if Moody is seen as a safety it could make room for Minter.

? Donovan Tate, 6-2, 195, athlete, Cartersville: A member of the Rivals top 100 juniors, Tate is a very versatile athlete who would probably find a home in the secondary at the next level. He played quarterback for Cartersville. Tate is another two-sport athlete (baseball) like recent signee Xavier Avery and current player Israel Troupe.

? Tom Savage, 6-4, 220, quarterback, Cardinal O?Hara (Springfield, Penn.): A national prospect who has drawn attention from both coasts. Stanford recently offered the strong-armed quarterback as did Penn State in his home state. Richt acknowledged Wednesday how difficult it is to get two top-ranked players at any position, let alone quarterback, but that is exactly what Georgia is trying to do with Savage and Mettenberger.

Gotta love the job Richt is doing at UGA. Recruits well every year, does it the right way (or at least as clean as possible in the SEC) and wins with the best of em. Compare his program with the minimum security prisons being run by Fat Phil and Urban, and the job he does is even more admirable. I'm quickly becoming a Dawgs backer.

Sorry Ben

02/14/2008 The NCAA has ruled against granting Ben Mauk a sixth year of eligibility. I can't say we are surprised as he used a special exemption given only to senior transfers to play for the Bearcats last year. With the starting job up in the air, spring practice will be one to watch with Notre Dame transfer Demetrius Jones, Dustin Grutza, Tony Pike and last redshirt freshman Chazz Anderson all competing for the job.

It will be interesting to see who wins the starting job, they will have some value in Kelly's offense....I would like to see Demetrius Jones win the job

GAINESVILLE - New assistant coach Kenny Carter is ready to make the Gators' running back position relevant again.

Florida officially announced the hiring Thursday, and Carter said he will be in Gainesville on Sunday to start the job. His family will hold off on the move until summer while his 11-year-old daughter finishes school.

The Gators have not had a dominant running back since Gators coach Urban Meyer implemented the spread offense three years ago.

"It's one of the things that Coach Meyer talked to me about. He wants to have production at that position," Carter said. "I'm very excited about having the opportunity to help that happen."

Carter, who has spent the past three years coaching running backs at Vanderbilt, said he has spoken with Florida's running backs since Tuesday when he accepted the job.

"When people need to be familiar with each other, you need to establish what's going to be the basis of our relationship and what the expectations are," Carter said. "They've all been very receptive, and we've had good conversations."

notes:
The Florida Gators announced the hiring of new running back coach Kenny Carter, who held the same position at Vandy for the past few years. Carter and Meyer have commented on their desire to make the running game more of an emphasis, and the presence of Emmanuel Moody could make this a greater possibility. Still, with a pass-happy offense and a fullback in disguise at QB, we'll believe it when we see consistent running back carries.

Florida has been missing the marquee back for quite some time....Moody could be a sleeper

Hearing some scuttlebutt that Perrileux might have left the LSU program.

I also read on rivals message boards RP may be off the team for yet another violation. There might be nothing to this rumor, but he is definitely a bad seed either way.

from wwl.com:

Bellavia: Perrilloux suspened indefinitely

Big news out of LSU today. WWL's Deke Bellavia says he has learned that Quarterback Ryan Perrilloux has been indefinitely suspended from the football team.

"As of right now, Ryan Perrilloux is not on the LSU Football Team. Whether or not he will be let back on the team or not... we hope to find that out in the next few days," reported Bellavia.

Perrilloux allegedly missed classes and team activities in the past few weeks.

I really like hearing these things. that is why the Florida celebration bothered me some last year. I want to maintain a reputation as a winning AND class-act program.

It's more than that. Perrilliar is in deep doo. If he wasnt in the most corrupt state in the nation he would be looking at jail time. Says alot when Gump suspends you...of course is it really a "suspension" or quitting considering Perrilliar had cleaned out his locker last week

RP's offenses:

*Questioned by Feds as an uninvolved party in a counterfeiting ring. Turns out he unkowingly received a fake $20 as change and passed it.
*Tried to enter Casino with fake ID in '06
*Involved in altercation outside of The Varsity at 2am in '07. No arrests made.
*Was given permission to miss time following recent passing of his father. He did not come back on time and appears he may have quit the team. He is obviously an emotional wreck at the moment.

The guy is an obvious idiot, but to say he should be in jail is lunacy. I guess in the GREAT state of Texas he would have been hung for using a fake ID.... Thanks for the laugh, Sun. :mj07:

Read the same thing on numerous message boards. The mom supposedly wanted compensation for the death of the father. Problem with that story is that the parents have been split up for years. Either way, you can't put anything past this type of scum.

Sure, he was suspended, but as of now it appears he has quit the team.

Even though LSU is lacking QB depth, I hope he is gone for good..... but I bet he is back after spring practice.
