I am going to log what I'm reading this year in this thread. Anyone else is welcome to do the same. It's a healthy habit that will hopefully keep me away from the damn TV.

My goal is to read 15 books this year.

Not sure if anybody else uses it, but my name on LibraryThing is WhatsHisNuts. It's a good tool for logging books you've read and finding books that interest you.

Book #1 Completed:

The Last Lecture, by Randy Pausch.

Finished Jan 3rd.

Rating: 3 of 5 stars.

Thoughts: Sad, semi-inspiring read. Lots of fluff, not a whole lot of valuable substance. Pretty fast read because it is short in pages and is a rather small book.

Book #2 Completed:

Survivor: A Novel by Chuck Palahniuk

Finished: January 7th

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Thoughts: Interesting story from the author of Fight Club. Started off pretty cool, but I started losing interest in the storyline 3/4 of the way through. It was kinda different because it started on the last page number and ended on page 1. I'm going to check out a couple of his other titles.

good idea gary...hopefully we can get others to participate....

the first book that i'll read starting monday (after football) will be..."deconstructing sammy"....the book is about the entertainer sammy davis jr...who made over 50 million $$ in his life-time only to die penniless...& owing the irs about 7 million $$ (the largest amount ever owed to the irs by a single individual).....i skimmed through the book & was startled to read that as sammy was laying on his death bed dying of cancer, his employees were stealing some of his jewlery & once sammy died, his wife, who became an alcoholic removed his jewelry from him as well as his glass eye...

Thanks Al.

That book sounds pretty interesting, but won't fit into my queue anytime soon. I think you are big into the history/bio area, and I think you were the one that turned me onto 1776 (which I read last year and loved). I'm going to check our old threads for ideas once I get through my current list. You had some recommendations I wanted to check out but have yet to read.

I'm currently reading Cannibal: The True Story Behind the Maneater from Rotenburg by Lois Jones. I've had this book for a few years and am sick of looking at it on the shelf. It's about the German guy that posted an ad online "Looking for a well-built man, 18-30 years old, for slaughter", and someone actually answered it.

Don't be intimidated, brother-man. This is an absolute record and there is a good reason my goal is only 15. Also, both books were easy reads. The Last Lecture would be 100 pages at the most if it was in a normal sized book. I cut back my drinking and read a lot last weekend and before bed this week. This pace won't last.

hmmmmmmm...

I'm going to start too. I need to read more; it's good for your body to read.

My dad is an avid (speed) reader. He reads at least 3 books a week. I remember many nights (before the internet :mj07: )where he would retire to his bedroom about 10 pm with a new book and have it totally read in 3-4 hours.

I'm going to see what I can dig up to read.

I'll participate.

I wish I could finish 15 books in a year. I'll start with what currently on my desk and update from there.

1. Nixonland: Rise of a President and the Fracturing of America

2. The Ancestors Tale - Richard Dawkins - love books on evolution vs. religion

3. The God Delusion

If I can get through these, I'll post more. I get distracted so easily, I usually have a hard time finishing anything I start reading. I have read half of alot of really good books lol

This is also one of my goals - to get back to reading more and watching less tv...esp now with the little one it is more important than ever as I want her to be an active learner, not a passive shell.

Used to read upwards of 100+ books a year, but that has seriously trended downwards the last few years, so it seems that 2 a month would be a good goal. Anyway, I have been reading a lot of books on children's development, so starting the year with "Child of Mine: Feeding with Love and Good Sense." Hopefully soon I will read a book that could be of more interest to fellow readers.

Good luck, and god-read (that's for you gm)

I'm in...1st up is a re-read of Tropic of Cancer by Henry Miller. I'm almost done with it--will finish it no later than Monday night.

I'm in the same boat as HH and Agent--only by late Feb- early March, our son will be joining the family....:00hour

I grew up in a family of readers and once football season is over (it might as well be, and if the Steelers lose anytime soon it will be) its back to the books for me.
With our 17 month old usually in bed and asleep by 8 PM, that allows me an hour to an hour and a half of reading before lights out. 5 AM wake up and in the gym by 5:30 to get my day started.
Won't commit to any total # of books to be read in 2009 as I have no idea how much extra time and energy it will take with a 2nd child, but I will try and be an active participant in this..:toast:

I had never read Slaughterhouse Five, so started that on New Year's Eve and finished a couple days ago. Next up is Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde.

Sadly, in a few weeks, my primary reading list will be:
The Practice of Federal Criminal Law: Prosecution and Defense

Ethical Problems in the Practice of Law

2008 Selected Standards on Professional Responsibility

A friend passed along Dostoyevsky's Crime and Punishment, and Notes from the Underground (which seems like a fairly quick read), so those will be up next.
