For golf fans:

Final Rounds is a great read that is extremely easy. Touching story about a man and his father's relationship as the father is dying.

I read a little bit of everything. Currently working my way through Hot, Flat and Crowded. Don't always agree w/ Mr. Friedman but he is a good read. I read a lot of fiction and nonfiction. Don't know if anyone belongs to these bookclubs but its a good way to get books on the cheap.

You can usually get 5-6 books at $1.00 + S/H. You just have to buy 4 books within 2 years to fulfill your commitment. I've been joining, fulfilling my commitment, cancelling and rejoining (need to use a different email addy). Sometimes on your initial enrollment you can add 1 book for $4.99. This book counts toward your 4 book commitment so you only have 3 left to buy in 2 years. What I would do is turn around and resell these books on Ebay (until I got sick of paying Ebay twice). Didn't make a killing but it pays for the hobby. If you do join make sure you stay on top of the monthly selections. Anywho, if anyone has questions be happy to answer them. Also I've got a ton of recent books that are just sitting around collecting dust.

The Book of Lies- Meltzer
The Gatehouse- Demille (one of my fav. authors)
Rules of Deception- Reich
Moscow Rules- Silva
Last Lecture- Pauch
Cross Country- Patterson (not one of my favs.)
Days of Infamy- Gingrich/Forstchen (good historical fiction)
Rough Justice- Higgins
The Last Patriot- Thor
Extreme Measures- Flynn
Sail- Patterson
Liberty's Blueprint- Meyerson
A Terrible Glory (Custer and Little Bighorn)- Donovan

Be happy to send these to anyone who wants em if you'll pay mailing.

Also, my wife, who never reads, has just flown through the Twilight series. She's currently reading the last one. Not for me but she loved them.

This was the audio I listened to prior to Wikinomics. Son of a bitch was almost 30 hours long!!!

I need to start getting the abridged versions of those audios!

I read the Anne Rice trilogy my freshman year of college (or somewhere around that timeframe). That was in 1994. Very good series overall.

In all my years of reading I've yet to listen to an audio book. Does it make the book more enjoyable? I've seen the Kindles that Amazon is selling but no way I'm plunking down $250 +. Am I missing out w/ the audio book thing?

Only when I travel. It's been quite some time that I have listened to a fiction novel on audio. I think the last one was Hannibal.

They're good for long car rides and flights when you can't sleep.

This is where the library comes in. Audio books are expensive, so I hit the library before I make any long drives. Overall, I think they are great. It is just like a book in many ways....if you like it, you'll hang on every word....if it sucks, it will be hard to focus on.

Just finishing up Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad. (I figured I'd start the year with a short one)

Keep this thread going, I need good ideas. I have a couple Sci-Fi/Fantasy authors I always read, which are givens each year... but I definitely am always on the lookout for other good finds.

I haven't ready ANY books by Cormac McCarthy and I want to knock a few of those out soon.

Anyone read Confederacy of Dunces. I had heard it was well written and very funny but it bored me to tears. Didn't even get 1/2 through it.

I'm glad you posted this Ben. One of the other threads floating here had that book highly recommended, but I haven't picked it up 'cause it just doesn't look like it's all that great.

Since Christmas, I've finished a couple:

Greg Norman's autobiography, "The Way of the Shark" and the book Ton mentioned, "Wins, Losses and Lessons" by Lou Holtz. I am about the furthest thing from a Notre Dame fan, but Holtz is a pretty incredible guy. I really enjoyed this one.

Norman's book was alright, and I found some of his golf stories interesting, but for me, the second half of the book turned into a pat-myself-on-the-back-look-what-I-have-accomplished-in-business ego ride. That could be just me, however.

Currently working on, "To the Swift", which is edited by Joe Drape and is a collection of newspaper and magazine articles on horse racing's eleven triple crown winners throughout the 20th century. As a big fan of racing history, this is a pretty good read as well.

Cool thread, fellas.

Gary I'd be curious to see what you thought of the book. Don't let my bad experience sway you.

Book #3 Completed:

Cannibal by Lois Jones.

Finished Jan 16th.

Rating: 3 of 5 stars.

Thoughts: Another case of truth being stranger than fiction. Very fast read. A little over 200 pages. I'd recommend it for anyone looking for a quick read.

Had the same reaction as you ga ben, but I managed to finish it. Had several people tell me it was funnier than anything they had read, so thats why I read it. Not funny in the least, IMO.

Finished Tropic of Cancer on Thursday night, next up is The Brothers Karamazov by Dostoevsky--one that I have always had on my list, figured now was as good as time as any to get started on it.
