Good thread, gmroz.

Trying to read 15-18 books this year. I'll start strong, but fade as usual.

I started Manhunt: The 12-Day Chase for Lincoln's Killer on NYD and finished that weekend. Interesting read. Last wednesday night, I picked up The Road, which my wife had recently purchased for her book club, and wound up finishing it in one sitting.

I recommend both.

These are next on my list (not sure of order):

The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao Recommend by a client of mine

Raising Resilient Children Lookin' to refine my skilz as a dad.

A good walk spoiled : days and nights on the PGA tour Enjoyed Feinstein's Q school book, and this one received better reviews.

Legacy of Ashes: History of the CIA I've been sitting on this one for a while.

Feinstein's book on Q school is a great read, Cie-- as are all his books. Have you read "Season on the brink"?.
Will add the resilient child book to my list of books to read--as soon as I make a list of the books I plan on reading this year....:mj07:

great idea, I watch way too much tv. My wife is an avid reader, I haven't read a whole book in years. I only read the newspaper, magazines or internet articles. Obviously I am a sports lover, mainly football anyone have any good football books to read. I have a book about Bill Romanowski that I have read about 1/2, I will have to find it and read the rest.

I had never read Slaughterhouse Five, so started that on New Year's Eve and finished a couple days ago. Next up is Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde.

Sadly, in a few weeks, my primary reading list will be:
The Practice of Federal Criminal Law: Prosecution and Defense

Ethical Problems in the Practice of Law

2008 Selected Standards on Professional Responsibility

A friend passed along Dostoyevsky's Crime and Punishment, and Notes from the Underground (which seems like a fairly quick read), so those will be up next.

crime and punishment, will start with that one, I also have notes from the underground, was told a must read. good luck with classes

Hey Hedge, I hardly ever read. There were lots of reasons, but I think the main one was that nothing really grabbed and kept my attention. Another big reason is that it can be an intimidating venture. However, even though I consider myself a slow reader, I realized that I can read a lot more pages in 5 minutes than I figured. Now, I try to find a pocket of 15 minutes and see how many pages I can knock out. Break the book down into small sections. As you start making progress, you'll find yourself wanting to see how far you can get. I always feel like I'm dying at the start of a book, then I get to page 50 or so and I feel like I'm making progress and I can start to see the light at the end of the tunnel....it gets better from there until you are done.

Ramble over.

One more thing Hedge: Guys that write biographies about sports stars probably aren't at the top of the craft. When you find people out there that are, it is a lot easier to read.

Authors I really like:

Malcolm Gladwell (Social Economics)
Sam Harris (Religion/Anti-religion)
Charles Bukowski (novels)

You seem to be into politics. I bet if you read one of those rightwing dirtbag books you'd fall in love with it.

Not really into politics, only when it is time for election for president, every time I think I can get into politics I realize they are all corrupt democrats and Republican no difference all they want is to get re-elected. I would probably enjoy one of Rush Limbaugh's books

I like non-fiction autobiographies about sports figures, mainly football players or coaches

Book #2 Completed:

Survivor: A Novel by Chuck Palahniuk

Finished: January 7th

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Thoughts: Interesting story from the author of Fight Club. Started off pretty cool, but I started losing interest in the storyline 3/4 of the way through. It was kinda different because it started on the last page number and ended on page 1. I'm going to check out a couple of his other titles.

Bought Choke a little while back... looking forward to it.

good idea gary...hopefully we can get others to participate....

the first book that i'll read starting monday (after football) will be..."deconstructing sammy"....the book is about the entertainer sammy davis jr...who made over 50 million $$ in his life-time only to die penniless...& owing the irs about 7 million $$ (the largest amount ever owed to the irs by a single individual).....i skimmed through the book & was startled to read that as sammy was laying on his death bed dying of cancer, his employees were stealing some of his jewlery & once sammy died, his wife, who became an alcoholic removed his jewelry from him as well as his glass eye...

this sounds good, im a big bio guy myself.... got Keith Moon's bio for xmas, should be a trip.

a quick blurb to wet your appetite:
""The great thing about being a sycophant is there's no deception going on. You know you're a weasel, your boss knows you're a weasel, and your coworkers know you're a weasel. Yet the method still works like a charm."

i`m not kidding...informative and entertaining...

I am about a 2 book a month guy but I read for escape and mostly just popular fiction. Already thru 2nd book so far this month.

Jason, the audio you are listening to is from my company and won the award for business book last year!

Cie, Good Walk Spoiled is a GREAT read, especially if you are into golf, an amazing in depth coverage of the pressures of the PGA Tour for the fringe players and trying to keep playing privileges.

I have been reading all Tim Dorsey books, he is a very funny Florida based writes and stories that are very humorous fiction books.

Read on!

Started reading last year, actually thought about it one day last August or so and really couldnt believe i haven't read anything but a newspaper or magazine in over 12 years or so. Right before X-Mas i finshed my first book, Wins, Losses, and Lessons - Lou Holtz. As a Notre Dame fan, i found it very interesting. Next on my list is - McMahon with Bob Verdi. I was 10 when my 85 Bears won that Superbowl and i dont really remeber to many details. So far, A few chapters in and these guys were CRAZY.

After reading these post, kinda intrigued with the Cannibal book, sounds interesting.

Hey Ton, glad to see you picked up a couple books. The book "Cannibal" is unbelievable. If a movie came out about this, I'd dismiss it as ridiculous, but this really went down. It's only 210 pages long, so it might be a good one for your list.
