You forgot the roll of Silver Dollar from Caesar's Palace that Luger used to win the tag titles for him & Sting back in 1996 :)

I love pro wrestling. I've written about it for years on the internet and now I write for the Observer. Glad to see there are so many AWA fans. My personal favorite moment was when Jerry Blackwell was piledriven on the concrete floor (I think it was Blackwell, I could be wrong). Also, I always thought Zbysko was overrated.

I forgot about the Silver Dollars. Was that on a PPV?

The roll of quarters/silver dollars were always a favorite of mine. When it connected with the guy's head the coins would spill out all over the ring, in plain sight of the referee! Still he always managed to count the 1...2...3!!!

As for Zbyszko, he's kind of an old school wrestler, not much flash, certainly not exciting to watch. But he was an excellent interview. He oughta thank Bruno for making his career a notable one.

Blackwell piledriven? Now THAT takes agility. I still have vivid memories of Snuka being piledriven on the concrete by Ray Stevens on a WWWF taping in the early '80's. There was so much blood on the ground that they had to "censor" out a large portion of what you could see on the TV screen.

Which sites did you write for before? rspw perhaps? I primarily relied on 1*********.com in the past. GL on your writing gig with Meltzer.

You guys are really conjuring up some great AWA memories. You boys remember Reggie Parks(I saw a truck roll over his stomach at a Walgreen's parking lot), Dale Lewis, Mitsu Arakawa, Frankie Hester(The Columbus strong boy, never won a match) Billy Red Cloud, Ricky Hunter(also never won a match). Do any of you remember the live commercials that Verne Gagne and huckster Joe Zweibach(sp) did for geraspeed(sp)? They were absolutely hilarious.

okay, so I didn't grow up watching the AWA

okay, so I didn't grow up watching the AWA

Only heard of Billy Red Cloud.

But I did watch the earliest movie I can recall that centered around the sport of pro wrestling. That would be The Wrestler (circa early '70's) starring the ol' man himself, Mr. Verne Gagne. They had all the AWA stars at the time in that movie, plus Wally Karbo, Vince McMahon Sr. and other key industry figures, and references to Dory Funk and Pedro Morales (the NWA and WWWF champions, respectively). Anyone else remember this movie? :)

Fletch, you mentioned George(The Animal)Steele. He and I spent a night in a hotel bar drinking whisky and talkin rasslin. After many shots we were
talking like long lost buddies. George quit his job as a teacher in Michigan and began his career in wrestling and could not believe the money he was making. He was very articulate and a really nice guy.

I also love gimmicks where a guy gets a broken arm and then keeps on the cast for a long time. Orndorff did that in the mid-eighties and Owen Hart did it in 1996.

Silver Dollars was at Caesars at a Clash of the Champions in January 1996, I believe. Luger and Sting were teaming with the gimmick that Sting kept getting mad at Luger for dirty tactics. I forget who they beat, either Harlem Heat or the Steiner Brothers.

I wrote for Wrestlemaniacs.com starting in May 1998, then Wrestleline.com in June, 1999. I stayed there until leaving for the Observer in September of last year. My real name is Ben Miller, if that helps any. I used to go to 1wrestling.com several years ago but the site started to get on my nerves a bit so I just started sticking to Wrestleine, the Torch and the Observer instead. I also like Slashwrestling.com and Onlineonslaught.com.

Nick -- Thanks for replying. I used to read Wrestleline quite a bit back then. And I do remember a "Ben Miller". That was you? Never paid for premium stuff like the Torch, and can't stand the pop up windows at 1wrestling. I've been visiting rspw recently, but that place isn't as happening as it used to be during the days of the early NWO.

Talk about "cast"....how 'bout Iron Mike Sharpe. He had that thing on his forearm practically his entire career!
