I retired here in Austin Texas . Being a New Yorker almost 99% of the teachers, police and firemen retire in North Carolina or Florida. Almost 99% of the people that retire here in Austin Texas are from Michigan, Minnesota, Indiana B-10 country and almost 65% from California. I went to North Texas St back in the late 60's and early 70's and married a native Texan from Paris, Texas. The day I graduated I left Texas and taught coached and became a school administrator in upstate NY for over 30 years. My wife who was a neonatal nurse always wanted to go back and retire in her native state. I agreed since cost of living ,no state income Taxes weather etc. I agreed to retire in Texas The big question is where in Texas. I originally wanted Denton where North Texas State is located But it gets cold in North Texas in the winter. I always thought about Corpus Christie near the gulf of Mexico. Padre island somewhere where the weather is somewhat tropical My oldest daughter went to U Texas in Austin My son went to East Carolina my other daughter to East Stroudberg St in Pa and my youngest daughter to Delhi in upstate NY .

Sorry .. lost my post will continue I didn't want to retire in a " red Neck " very conservative place. I was born and raised a democratic since my father was one. I am not a liberal democratic but a true Democratic . This post is not about politics and my position on them . I loved Obama and voted for him . Was not crazy about Hillary .. Anyway lets get back to Austin. Austin to me is like living in Greenwich Village in NYC.Almost everyone has a tattoo if you are female. My oldest Daughter who is a teacher here in Austin has one but its hidden
This week the elections and voting is going on. Austin carried Obama, Hillary by over 75% . It's nickname is a " blue dot in a red state. And with so many Californians moving in everyday its has all democratic in state reps county reps,bd of eds judges. etc But the other day Sally Duvall who is running for State Rep in district 73 " ripped out a bong in her campaign When asked why did she smoke from a bong her answer was " its about freedom " She is a house wife and does not look like a smoker. I don't think I can vote in District 73 but hats off to her, I don't think she can win but I never saw anyone in an aid on TV say Vote for me and smoke from a bong. I will keep everyone updated tomorrow on the results in Austin . Many years ago when I was young at North Texas I might of been sitting next to her But sometimes you grow out of it have families etc The Austin Chronic does a story on her . In today's paper although Austin is very liberal think Sally who ripped out a bong in her campaign ad could be in trouble Will give everyone's the final vote count.
Go out and vote today or tomorrow . In 1972 election I voted for Jesse James as State Treasure for Texas. He won So you never know Vote

Curious if you have run into the writer Lawrence Wright who wrote that Scientology book? He plays in a local band there. Never been to Austin or Texas.

My daughters ex husband was writer and now is a screen play writer in Hollywood But I don't know the guy you mentioned I'll ask my daughter

Haven't started capping basketball yet . I know my favorite Texas woman's player was named pre-season Big 12 or Sec POY She was a forward and they moved her to pt gd last year Madisin Booker.. And I loved the Harmon girl. An outstanding pt gd but ripped her knee up and missed most of the season When they put in Booker at the pt I was really surprised. She is a heavy set girl that looks a little over weight. Though she was more power fd. But Madison can handle the ball has great court awareness and can pass and score. Love her despite her body Was surprised she was named pre-season POY of the conference. Love the woman's coach and his kids play for him Have a good year. Still capping football and peaking at basketball. take care

wow Girls have a great schedule I don't like going to Texas's new Stadium Moody Its a beautiful arena But Parking and traffic I have to deal with. Love going to the mens Tex State games Park right near the gym No crowd .sit right near the court and bench's. The older I get the less hassles are a lot easier Most of the games are televised so I watch them on TV. The Texas St girls teams sometimes play before the mens home games. But there is a huge talent difference between the Texas woman's teams and Texas St woman's team. I don't think they ever play each other.

Booker did an ok job filling in for Harmon at the PG..Just so unnatural for her.
12 turnovers by Texas in 30 minutes vs NC St in the Elite was to much to overcome
Harmon will clean all that up
Hopefully Vic learns to love the 3 ball a little more.
Can't beat South Carolina or UConn without it...score 85 or lose

Booker could go for 20+ w/Harmon back
I know what ya mean about closeness to EVERYTHING..
we push forward...

think Harmon is back and 100% . To me I have said this many many times If you have a good pt gd that doesn't get rattled it negates the home court advantage . Great point gds control the game and despite playing in hostile arena's they run your offense I was so lucky almost my entire career to have good pts gds They had high IQ's Basetball IQ's .. and there is a difference. In my experiences when opposing teams press, trap and home crowds are against you screaming and everyone is a little nervous a good pt gd with a basketball IQ is like having a coach out there. And if that pt gd has a handle with the ball he can attack and the man/zone press to your advantage. I sometimes wanted teams to press us because I knew we could create a mismatch 2-1,3-2 etc . If teams are going to double team you to trap then you must make them pay a price for there ..strategy. But if you scout teams and know how they react to a trap you attack it Most coaches just want to get the ball over the 10 second line and make a conservative effort and safe .. But some like to attack the press. And I had all black and Puerto Rican players and I would tell them watch us beat there press and they call it off. After watching the game on tape the next day my players would feel so proud about the other coaches and teams calling off their press.

Old school I agree with you about Booker in the beginning but later in in the season she handled the ball ,saw the floor hit the open girl I am so glad she got the recognition to be named pre season POY And with Harmon back at the pt Madison can be what they now call Pt forward.

I love reading Box +1 posts.

I was down at the Omni Hotel Wednesday and Thursday, this week, volunteering for the Austin Film Festival. We'll probably be back Saturday afternoon for a few films after football.

Wednesday - We parked at the hotel from 10-7 and it cost $55.
Thursday - I parked a block and a half away from 9-2 and it cost $13.

We headed over to East 6th street for the food and drink portion Wednesday and the drive was right at dusk. I told Autumn that as soon as I was able to drive as a 16 year old in '92 that I would drive down on Friday & Saturdays with high school buddies getting in to which ever "clubs" would let us in. We would park under the I-35 bridge because it was free and we didn't have to parallel park (a teenagers kryptonite) We weren't sneaking out either. I'd tell Mom & Dad that we were headed to 6th street and there just wasn't any concern.

It does not have the same feel now that it did back then. When people walk down the street, they don't make eye contact and I feel like that's different than it use to be.

We took $30 worth of tolls, roundtrip, to avoid I-35 and the driving headache. It's worth it.

Even with the growth around here, I still love the San Marcos area. I got a chance to meet up with Box at the sports bar across from our office and he's even cooler in person than his MJ posts which are legendary.

Looking forward to our next get together which will have to be after Thanksgiving as we are headed for back to back youth football championships.
