Kelly Pavlik scraps title bout with Paul Williams

Kelly Pavlik scraps title bout with Paul Williams

By DAVE SKRETTA, AP Sports Writer

Middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik called off a title defense against Paul Williams set for Dec. 5 because of an infected left hand.

Pavlik was scheduled to fight Williams at Atlantic City?s Boardwalk Hall in one of the year?s most anticipated bouts, but promoter Top Rank announced Wednesday that Pavlik is unable to make a fist or punch with the injured hand.

Top Rank president Todd duBoef said Pavlik?s recovery has ?not progressed as projected by Dr. Peter Evans at the Cleveland Clinic. Once Pavlik is cleared medically by Dr. Evans, we will pursue all avenues with regards to a future bout.?

Pavlik and Williams were supposed to fight in October, but the bout was postponed at the last minute because of the hand injury. The decision came while promoters and sponsors were already traveling to New York for the announcement.

The news conference finally was held two weeks ago at Giants Stadium, where running back Brandon Jacobs gave both fighters personalized Giants jerseys. Pavlik said at the time his hand was feeling better after a second surgery removed most of the infection. He was beginning to run and planned to start training in earnest this week.

When he showed up at the gym this week, trainer Jack Loew realized that Pavlik wasn?t able to spar or hit a punching bag with his left hand. Loew finally suggested the fight be called off, and it?s unclear when the WBC and WBO titleholder will finally make it back in the ring.

Pavlik (35-1, 31 KOs) believes the infection could date to last October, when he was pounded by Bernard Hopkins in a bout at 170 pounds. Pavlik returned in February to stop Marco Antonio Rubio in a title defense before a hometown crowd in Youngstown, Ohio, but hasn?t fought since.

Top Rank blamed the hand injury for the postponement and cancellation of another fight against Sergio Mora for June 27, even though Pavlik publicly claimed he was healthy.

Williams promoter Dan Goossen said he won?t wait for Pavlik again and will look for a different opponent for the Dec. 5 date on HBO. Williams, one of the most feared fighters from welterweight to middleweight, hasn?t fought since a lopsided decision over Winky Wright in April.

?These are the circumstances that you try to avoid and move past, and I?m not going to sit here and denigrate Pavlik or Top Rank,? Goossen told The Associated Press. ?They all had their chance.?

Goossen declined to discuss possible opponents for Williams (37-1, 27 KOs), but HBO Sports president Ross Greenburg said the show will go on. No site has been determined.

It was expected to be a doubleheader with the opening televised bout featuring welterweights Joshua Clottey and Carlos Quintana, but Top Rank spokesman Lee Samuels said that fight also was scrapped. Clottey is promoted by Top Rank.

?We are obviously very disappointed that the Paul Williams vs. Kelly Pavlik fight has been canceled,? Greenburg said in an e-mail to The Associated Press. ?Dan Goossen has told us he is looking for the best opponent for Paul Williams to fight on Dec. 5. The show will go on, and we are looking forward to another solid night of boxing on HBO.?

1st time said since late June but on the comeback trail this week.

My plays:

Rojas-160 over Mbamba. Looks to be a higher class than the undefeated fighter. Mbamba has 2 sds and an md in Sth Africa which doesn't bode well for when he takes it to the road.

Under on Miranda 7 1/2 -175. Sierra looks to be a banger (19 kos in 20 wins, 2 losses 1 via ko) but on paper not exactly in Mirandas class. He is very young so perhaps he may have a little talent. Has the looks of being a shoot out while it lasts.

Adamak to finish a 3 way parlay. I'll be shocked if the foul Pole pulls the upset. I think Adamak get him out of there to hit the under which I may play but that line has moved.

Kosteci -200. Strictly boxrec but looks a tad higher in calibre. He was ahead widely in his only loss which was a ko by a puncher. Kosteckis
opponent doesn't appear to be able to bang and he struggled against marginal opp. This is the undercard fight in Poland.

Jaime Moore -330. The odds were moving on other sites so had to hit the "value". Seems to be coming into his own with a few recent impressive kos.

Cruz -500. Wide chalk but safe bet. Line is higher than -1000 now.

A lot of chalk this week which I don't like. Got to be careful because if just 1 lrge wager loses then the week goes to sht. All wagers have moved in a good direction so some hedging may occur. Best of luck everybody!

Hey,

Thanks for words of encouragement after an awful week. Dirrell may well have won the fight, but I think Froch was right when he said you can't come into a champs backyard and fight like that. He didn't take the title away. I couldn't get Dirrell's running kurby performance against Curtis Stevens out of my head, and I should have listened. I will need to see a different Dirrell before I ever touch him again.

Okay, playing it simple and 'safe' this week after last week's devastation. See if I can get off the canvas here.

My sole major play of the week is Moore at -350. Some chalk there, but Moore is really peaking now. I think he is on his way to a world title, or at the very least will be a stiff challenge for 154 champs. Rhodes looks to be the perfect stay-busy opponent for Moore. I saw Rhodes' fight against V.Vuma and he really struggled. This Rhodes gets entirely outclassed by a focused Moore.

Other small parlays centering around Moore with C.Edwards, G.Davies, V.Fonseca, and Adamek, but Moore is the key.

Good luck boys

Not much this week for me I guess.

Adamek should win against Golota, but its his first fight at heavyweight and the line is not favourable.

Mbamba Rojas IMO will go over.
Judging from his record and some pics, I get the feeling that Mbamba will be a tough match for Rojas, who enjoys homefield advantage.

I'm also taking a chance on Sierra.
Miranda is pretty much done. Goossen is a good trainer though, maybe he could help him, I hope not... ;-)

Golota has only lost to fearsome punchers Tyson, Brewster.

And to massive men like Bowe, Lewis, Grant and Austin. (Ruiz is pretty big and that fight was debatable)

If Golota is right, he may simply be too strong for Adamek. I'll be looking into this one

He' only been dominated when he's been blown out early. See Tyson, Lewis, Brewster and Austin.

Can Adamek take Golota out early? I don't think so.

And if he doesn't, he will have a tough fight on his hands with a big, strong basket case. Should be fun.

You read my mind Kramden
I wish.....this is one of those Lenmoore, California cards the Goosens run
Quezada fought Travis Walker on the last one
Unfortunately, no cameras as far as I know
I wish there was a 24/7 boxing channel somewhere to pick up these small cards

Love Arreaola but I think Tua is wrong for him. I'd have to advise his team NOT to take that one. Tua too strong and Arreola will engage him. KO win for the Tuaman.
