THE KISS OF DEATH
the minute you see a guy walk to the ring with any shit on his head, bet the OTHER WAY
Every time
it is the most fail-proof thing in boxing
Great observation Ghost.
I like guys coming into the ring focused and ready to fight. Perez had that look, Agbeko didn't.
Bernard Hopkins wore the executioner's mask, Roy Jones Jr. wore a dog collar into the ring before his annihilation of Thomas Tate and Arthur Abraham used to wear a Smurf hat (and later a crown) into the ring, but all these guys exuded confidence and authority, each in their own way: Bernard looked plain mean, Jones looked ready to do serious damage before meeting Tate (who had pissed him of with pre-fight comments) and with Abraham you had the sense that he was having fun and looking forward to the night's work.
On the other hand, when Felix Trinidad wore a New York cop's hat into the ring before the fight with Hopkins, and made that all-smiles, loosey-goosey ring entrance (while Hopkins was bristling with menace) I had the strong sense that Tito was in big trouble.
As soon as I saw Agbeko coming into the ring in that ridiculous King Kong mask, led on a chain by "Fay Wray", I knew I had picked the wrong guy. Perez had the look of a man who was ready to fight flat-out from the start, Agbeko looked as if he thought he just had to show up to win.
The mental aspect of boxing is so important. Agbeko got outfought and outbanged early, looked visibly startled by the punches that were coming at him and just couldn't get his nose in front at any point in the fight, and the "knockdown" in the 10th sealed his fate. (Yep, Paul, the referee got it wrong as usual. What else is new?)
