115=113 in favour of Daws, Romi

115=113 in favour of Daws, Romi

No attempt to discredit anyone's view of the Brit fight (Daws/Cook) earlier but both fighters thought the fight was very close. Both apparently thought the fight was w/in a rd or so, per boxingscene. I didn't see it so take my previous comments with a grain of salt. I know I tend to harp on the foreign scoring but as we saw just 2 weeks ago, the same shenanigans go on in the US...referring to Shu/Campillo. Of course I've long forgiven Patricia Jarmin for that blatantly corrupt score card :142smilie

Would like to get Grahams take on the fight when he gets a chance.

I had it a very tight fight, Romi, Daws pulling away in the last few rounds to win by 115-113. The odds are influenced by the Sky TV commentaries, nothing crooked about it. When Jim Watt or Adam Smith or Glenn McCrory say things like: "Cook is starting to tire badly now" or "Daws is in complete control now" the odds almost invariably spike in the live betting as players get behind the guy the commentators believe is on his way to the win. ... There were rounds when Cook was slipping punches, landing hooks and uppercuts and giving Daws a bit of a boxing lesson yet Glenn McCrory and Adam Smith were seeing them as Daws rounds.

Although I had Daws a clear winner, taking control of the fight from the 5th on... It's good to get another perspective. It's tough to see Cook winning though. That would require judges to give him ALL the marginal rounds - and then some. Something still seems not quite right to me about the decision.

The question of judging accountability has plagued boxing forever. I'm not sure what the answer is. I don't like open scoring, but it does seem to hold the judges more accountable. I suppose a more strict grading system for the judges. Over time the bad judges get filtered out. I do think the sentiment that promoters, etc. - the people who hire the judges - do influence the judging, is not to be ignored. Who is the house fighter? Where is the fight? And yes, at certain times, where is the money falling? Important questions when trying to pick a winner.

Thx for the response Graham. As Quanah said, it's good to hear different perspectives on the fights. Apparently this one may have been closer than what some thought but even Cook surprisingly admitted he thought he lost by a round. I know we have disagreed on a few. It will always be subjective. That being said, I still think there is some blatant corruption going on. It would be nice to see some sense of accountability.

Corruption? Accountability?

Corruption? Accountability?

Thx for the response Graham. As Quanah said, it's good to hear different perspectives on the fights. Apparently this one may have been closer than what some thought but even Cook surprisingly admitted he thought he lost by a round. I know we have disagreed on a few. It will always be subjective. If a judge keeps turning in scorecards inconsistent with that of the other judges I think it raises a red flag, Romi, and the various promoters and managers can say: "We don't want this judge" and no judge wants to be put in that position. I tend towards the view that a good judge can simply see a fight differently (wrongly) than the general view of the fight and isn't necessarily turning in a corrupt scorecard.

For instance, I think a judge can get into a wrong "scoring groove" for want of a better term. The Paul Williams-Sergio Martinez fight is a case in point. The "off" judge might reason: "I gave the last round to Williams because although it was a tough round to score he was throwing so many more punches; this was another tough round but if I'm true to myself I've GOT to give it Williams." So, you have one crazily wide score for PW and two tight scores.

In the Shumenov fight the other day, although Patricia Morse Jarman's score was way off she was only "out" in two rounds when you compare her score with that of the other two judges. (That is, she was in company with at least one of the other judges in 10 out of 12 rounds.)

It is subjective, to be sure. The Shumenov decision did surprise me, however. Guys who were at ringside (not influenced by TV commentary) were shocked by the decision.

This will be the first Saturday in forever that I have no real bets on anything. I have scalps on Morel/Penalosa,Santiago-Concepcion and the Mitchell over/under. I found tonights card pretty hard to bet on.
