That was a hard week to swallow

That was a hard week to swallow

I guess I was due for a reality check. :0047 This week was very humbling for me and others. It is a shame that many of the fights had no American TV broadcasting, so I could not see where I went wrong. That being said, I don't take this in stride or lightly. I am serious and dedicated in my picks and will improve in the future. Thanks again guys for the updates and info.

Let's get'em next week.

Not always Ghost

Not always Ghost

fightnews report on the Tamara-Lazarte fight also with ZERO mention of the knockdown that was ruled a slip

biased as shit reporting

really expected more from Tamara though

I was watching the fight tonight with a boxing trainer, and the guy said to me

"shit, if a guy was roughing us up like that, I would tell my guy to smash him right back!"

Tamara, with all that amateur pedigree, was WAY too passive when the headbutts and rabbit punching occurred. and the crowd was so loud the last round, Tamara just put his head down when the bell rang and resigned himself to getting screwed.

Years of work to become champion, and he really shit the bed tonight. They needed to get on that ref about the knockdown. and they should have pressed for a point deduction on the head butts. I mean, how many warnings does a guy get?

If you are fighting at home in Argentina, the answer is one million. You get exactly one million.

Just a kindly meant reminder, but fighters have been known to get the decision in close fights in Argentina, Ghost. Didn't Danilo Reyes get the verdict over Lazarte? Campillo over Garay in a very tight fight.

Home advantage can be huge. A crowd's fervour can lift a guy to new heights. Lazarte was probably coming in to wage the fight of his life and do whatever it takes. Tamara might have had a so-called "letdown" after the tremendous win over Viloria. You know, Tamara hit the heights in that fight, he put everything into it, then there is the comedown in the next fight. He is on the road, in front of a hostile crowd, and (I didn't see the fight) apparently Lazarte gets all the breaks.

This was a heartbreaker for Tamara players, one round on one card from a draw -- which at least would have meant a "push" grading -- and from Ghost's description this fight would have been at worse a draw anywhere but in Argentina on this night.

Hometown "advantage" is sometimes overrated but not always. The crowd in London didn't help Kevin Mitchell and the Namibia site didn't help Moses yesterday, but the hometown crowd in Mexico had Cristobal Cruz fighting like a man possessed to get the somewhat fortunate win over fellow-Mexican Jorge Solis, who was the better fighter, and now something similar has just happened in Argentina. What can you do?

You are spot on with the crowd lifting Lazarte to heights he couldn't achieve normally. I also think the frenzy of the crowd (they were NUTS) made it difficult for the referee and the judges. Every punch Lazarte threw (legal or illegal), every grab and hold, every headbutt. It didn't matter. They LOVED it in Argentina. And Tamara played RIGHT INTO IT.

Tamara most certainly had a letdown and I just wish I had anticipated this. I was VERY influenced by the opponent's age, the weigh-in photo, and the article on boxingscene which described the "easy" optional defense. Not so easy, it turns out.

http://www.boxingscene.com/?m=show&opt=printable&id=28062

This fight was VERY similar, in fact, to the Cruz-Solis fight. A dirty, foulfest with the local crowd going crazy for their guy - a win by any means necessary.

I read today that Lazarte is as street sweeper by profession in Argentina, and a beloved figure. It was sort of funny, in the article, how they listed all his DQ losses. The guy has been DQ'ed 4 times and it is VERY clear why. He deserved several point deductions last night, but it was never going to happen.

In a fairly judged fight I can't see Lazarte winning. But honestly I stopped judging after about rnd 8. The writing was on the wall. I could see what the script was in Argentina - and I was pulling my hair out for laying the price.

Got bit this week - it happens.

Ghost , I think if we had paid a little more attention to the story line, beloved 39 year old who had failed in 5 attempts and this was basically his final chance to win and the champion Tamara had to go to his backyard. Was definitely set up for him to win, but Tamara is a bit hot & cold and the old "a fighter becomes X% better when he becomes champion" didn't hold true here. I thought the relentlessness against Villoria would show up and that Tamara went to a new level. Apparently not. No biggie, can't win em all.

Absolutely.
Much of the press I could find on the internet this week was about Tamara and how he was in tip top form. But I have a feeling some of these were the dreaded promoter press releases, picked up as news by fight sites, but really just very one-sided (like the "easy" title defense article from boxingscene).
Articles like this:
http://www.fightnews.com/Boxing/tamara-is-fighting-fit-46276

There was another side to this story - and it was a BIG UNDERDOG tale in Argentina. Usually when Lujan or Abregu or any of these guys fights, I try to find and translate local Argentine articles.

I did this a few months back when Abregu fought a local guy, and it helped me hit the UNDER.

But I overlooked the local angle this time, making my play on the basis of the 9 losses on Lazarte's record and the picture of him on fightnews. BAD BAD miscalculation.

Always have to read press from both sides of the fight. Lesson learned I hope.
