Hopkins; the "hold out" book

Hopkins; the "hold out" book

Thanks for the info weasel, I am jsut asking as most of my books already paid, but one is waiting for the official decision of the boxing commision... :violin:

I have just checked in here and saw your post Lord. If you bet on Dawson and a book is holding up your payout pending the California commission's decision, I fear the worst, because I would say it is 100-1 on that the commission will, after "reviewing" the matter, declare the bout a "no decision". The commission dare not do otherwise: Too much heat from Golden Boy Promotions (the biggest promotional company by far in the Golden State) -- and I believe that Jose Sulaiman has just weighed in with his opinion that the bout should be a no decision.

I will be flat-out astonished if the Dawson TKO win is allowed to stand. At least you will get your money back but you won't get the win you deserved, assuming you played Dawson. Maybe you could PM me or email the name of the book involved, just so I know for future reference? All the books with which I have accounts paid up promptly, like, within hours of the fight ending.

I just read Evan's post and I couldn't have put it better myself. Hopkins is great at dishing it out and being the rough, tough, guy in the ring (butting open a gash over poor Winky Wright's eye very early in the fight, mauling and mugging the stylish but not very strong Keith Holmes etc. etc) but for a former convict and ex-street guy who likes doing the pre-fight throat-slitting gesture he sure doesn't like it too much when something is coming back at him.

I'm not sure how badly his shoulder was "hurt" in the Antwun Echols fight because unless my memory is playing weird tricks I seem to recall him pasting the outclassed Echols pretty badly in the very next round, even knocking Antwun down, and BOTH arms seemed to be working just fine.

So many fighters all through ring history have fought with appalling handicaps, and I am in awe of their fortitude: Tyrell Biggs outboxing heavy-handed Jeff Sims despite suffering a broken collarbone, Danny Williams fighting with a dislocated shoulder and, fighting with only his left hand, knocking out Mark Potter; Larry Holmes winning a war with Ken Norton despite a torn biceps; Arthur Abraham fighting many rounds with a broken and horribly disfigured jaw against heavy hitter Edison Miranda; old-time featherweight great Benny Bass fighting with a broken collarbone in a gruelling 15-rounder with Tony Canzoneri; Marcel Cerdan fighting one-armed due to a shoulder injury against Jake LaMotta -- good God, the list is endless. So to see a self-proclaimed tough guy looking for the exit (and not for the first time) doesn't look too good in my eyes.

We have the medical report saying that Hopkins had a legitimate shoulder injury and I suppose we have to accept that although people of my acquaintance (and I am sure of your acquaintance, too) have boasted of getting many days or even months booked off work by convincing a doctor they had some sort of injury, it is very common. I am not saying that Hopkins was not injured badly enough to be unable to fight on, but who knows for sure? Bearing in mind Bernard's past theatrics, my guess is that Pat Russell probably thought: "No, no, Bernard, you're not getting away with that in my state, not on my shift."

The real shame is that Dawson was on his way to winning -- I am convinced of this -- but will soon have a "no decision" on his record.

perfect graham...and evan....i think fair minded folks could argue the "foul" issue......but pat russell never waivered...he said" no foul" several times with the mike catching it.......never "accidental foul" as the hbo crew alleged.......and last time i checked,he was the sole arbiter in there...i can`t remember russell being involved in any other controversial situations(i could be wrong there)....

bhop couldn`t continue, end of story....stoppage due to injury.....

of course,it`s a political clusterf-ck...ppv purchasers get screwed...goldenboy feigning indignation...the hbo honchos so deeply invested in a bhop"archie moore" story...i agree...the dark forces are aligned on this one...no way it stands...

i have to repeat again,though...i was impressed with everything about dawson saturday night....he was a man possessed...i agree that bernard appeared to be in with more than he could handle this time around... and i think he sensed that...

i would love to see a dawson/pascal rematch....

btw..as for boxing in general,.bellew/cleverly,imo,might have done for british boxing what griffin/bonnar did for the ufc...i have friends that caught this on the internet...they weren`t really into european boxing....but they were blown away by the fight...the first 7-8 rounds were absolutely brutal...and technically excellent....

and the last round of the linares fight?....amazing.....

it`s ashamed that the hopkins fiasco tainted an otherwise 5* weekend...

I have a bud that thought what Mayweather did to Ortiz was out of line, but consider something. Ortiz' actions with the flagrant head butt created the circumstances that followed. Also my friend did'nt just get rammed in HIS face. Floyd was livid and remember, "what goes around, comes around". Now, don't you think, Dawson, having watched Hopkins for years KNEW what Hopkins brings to the table? You or I weren't the ones with a fucking jerk off jumping on OUR back! Yea, payback is a bitch. Hopkins provoked Dawson, and finally, someone gave Hopkins a taste of his own medicine. Watch video of Hopkins very closely. We see punch/lunge/elbow/headbutt/grab. FUCK HIM.

Franki u have always been a Hopkins hater so reading a comment like urs u take with a grain of salt.

From five minutes of fighting u already determine that? It was a total denominating fight by Dawson? Heck u would have thought it was a Greg Maynard beating of Frankie Edgar type of first round to come up with that conclusion. Pascal looked pretty good early against Hopkins and we know how well that turned out. Im not sticking up for Hopkins here but some of the hatred for Hopkins have blinded peoples thoughts. If his shoulder was legitimately injured what 46 year old fighter would stand up and fight with one arm against what many think is one of the best pound for pound guy around at 24 years old? Why didn't Dawson just shove him off instead of launching him? He is as much to blame if not more than Hopkins.

Well I wasn't aware of that, really. I thought I respected guys that fought the good fight. I was amazed when Hopkins schooled Pascal! Deserved all the respect in the world. So if they fight again in 6 months, we will see. By then folks will say Hopkins is too old, blah, blah, blah. Guess Bernard will think twice about WWF tactics if he fights Dawson again though. So will Dawson.
