FWIW, my notes show DTB previously noting that poor stats for driving accuracy AND scrambling is a terrible recipe for players in this event; DTB didn't suggest one way or another that being strong in either or both of those stats was an indicator of good, indifferent or bad performances, just that poor performance in both categories makes them very opposable over the weekend on the South Course.
OUTRIGHTS:
Tim Clark(66/1) e.w.
- - From his website on 12/22/07: "Overall I'm happy with my year, overcoming injury and still finishing in the top 30 - I really feel 2008 has great things in store for me. I'm healthy, happy and about to get married - and I'm that much closer to a win in the US. I hope to start the year off well, the first tournament on my schedule is the Buick at Torrey Pines, which is one of my favorite courses... and the site of the 08 US Open . . . Best Wishes for the Holiday Season and have a stellar 2008." . . . I would prefer the U.S. Open conditions of June for this play, but it still has much merit, regardless.
John Daly(400/1) e.w.
- - Plenty of viewing opportunities at the Hope, and for a second straight week I observed Daly as unusually patient and comfortable with his swing; a rusty short game looks the culprit for slowing his progress IMO, with a putting stroke that's too wooden rather than free flowing, and some substandard chips and pitches also on display, but I've never seen Daly's feel and touch be more than a blip in holding him back from any progress. While it might not yield immediate dividends this week, JD's short game could gain some inspiration from a smooth pairing with Vaughn Taylor and Chris Riley. The situation with John is always volatile and subject to change, but there's no way I think John is one of the longest of long shots in the field this week, or in his next few events going forward; if something clicks early, I think his game is in shape to ride the wave . . . And from Thomas Bonk last week: "John Daly, who had withdrawn from 11 PGA Tour events the last two years, made it an even dozen Saturday morning when he withdrew from the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic . . . Daly told tour officials he had a rib injury . . . Daly's couldn't make his 9:33 a.m. tee time in the celebrity field at the Classic Club, where he was to play in a group with actors Cheech Marin and Don Cheadle . . ."Obviously we'd like to have him here, because this is our marquee day, when the celebrities hit the Classic Club," tournament director Mike Milthorpe said . . . Daly has been a regular this week at the Hope's tournament parties. He attended two more tournament parties Friday night, including an after-party, and told one local reporter to ignore the fact that he was drinking. At the first party, Daly sang "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" in a duet with Alice Cooper. Eyewitnesses said Daly was helped out of the after-party by an unidentified man." (Aside: I wish I had pulled the trigger on Edfors in Qatar; consider that a tip for his prospects over the next 54 holes.)
Nick Watney(80/1) e.w.
- - A Californian that should have success here this week and in the future.
Bubba Watson(100/1) e.w.
- - Trending here with some positive momentum . . . All other things being equal, my template for Bubba would have his chances improving vis-a-vis a good chunk of the field the more it becomes a slog to get around Torrey Pines South.
Robert Allenby(70/1) e.w.
- - Was leaning to Kevin Sutherland all week, and Mike Weir was probably next on my short list, but had also ruminated on the vibes from Allenby, and that's where my money landed.
Matchups:
Allenby(-115) over Appleby (Tournament)
