This little tournament, the BNC, or also known as, the second week of the Texas Open, is played on a tricked up, par 70 layout. No birdie fest here. Only 12 golfers played under par in '08. This week accuracy and scrambling will be the keys to Sunday play. A typically American bombers paradise, this is not.

Tommy's final list included the longshot Bart Bryant, Wi, Hoffman, Baird, of course Leonard, and my pick for the week

Brian Gay 51.00 sia
Fair enough odds for a player that is well into recent form and has good history here also.

The power rankings every week by Mike Vitti @ the PGATour website is a neat little deal. It has some good info and fairly entertaining.

Verplank. Can't bet with him and can't fade him either. He won't win for me, and when I go against him, he kills me. Other than that, I like him.

GLTA and more later.

This thread is off to a booming start. Is Gore finally starting to wake up? He better, or it's back to the Nike Tour.

Over 72 holes---

Na over Crane -110 Kevin is having the best year of his life, Crane runs hot or cold. Cold right now, I hope.

Mahan over Allenby -110 Allenby, what happened to this red-hot golfer over the last month or so? He been on vacation? Allenby has always been worse than Appleby, and Apples has been terrible this year. Mahan, warm right now, wins this one.

Baird over Mallinger -110 Taking a stab here. Briny is steady as I've ever seen him in 10 years. I like Mallinger too, just not this week.

Estes over Maruyama -110 I hope Estes has enough gas to get this done. His motivation is still high. I think Shegheki gets cut. Rusty.

Remember the Big Five from 4 or 5 years ago? What happened there? I always thought it was kind of a joke. It really was the Big One, wasn't it? Television wanted to create some interest from the casual fan, so they invented this concoction.

Tiger, Mick, Els, Goosen, and Furyk. The five. Jeez.

Tiger was and still is the best to ever play the game. Start and finish right there. I'm not a big fan of Tiger either, I think he kind of ruins many tournaments. The non-golf fan loves him though. They want to watch him win on TV. I agree, it is like watching history being made. He ruins golf bettiing though.

Mickleson. Everyone loves to hate this guy. I think he's interesting. Not a big fan of Lefty, but I don't wish him evil either. Correctly rated the second best golfer right now. I believe his age is showing and he is ready to fall into journeyman catagory, maybe this year even.

Els. I personally don't think he's in the top 30, let alone third. My best fading, money machine, of the last three years. The odds makers insist on overinflating his value. I'll take it, thanks. Ernie's problem in my opinion, is that he looks to be bored with the whole thing. Been there and done it all, time to relax, life is one big vacation.

Goosen has gotten way better than Els, and has fled the fourth best spot, for lower levels. Still a good player, he lost his adversary, and his fire. Did I say fire? He never had any fire. On some courses, no fire works, US Open comes to mind.

Furyk drops into journeyman class, and he doesn't lead the class there, either. Zach Johnson is out Furyking, Furyk, anyway. Age higher, motivation lower are the buzz words here. Almost as good as fade material as Els, not quite, as the odds guys don't care about him as much.

I'm going to keep writing until we get this discussion going. Tommy

It was VJ, not Furyk.

Right you are. I hate getting old.

Singh. Now Vijay deserved to be in the club. Big winner late in the career, steady. I used to bet him a few times a year. It seems to me the books didn't give Vij his due, under estimated his value. Today though, no. All gone. VJ is shot. too old too stoved up to win anymore. He is going to kick ass on the Champions Tour though.

Back in my town....Another Steve is right...no course drinks sucks, but I have access to some hospitality suites that have great views of golf and babe action and the beer and margs are cold. I'll be there tomorrow and one weekend day, and a couple of days next week at Colonial.
Outside of Poulter, who cashed me a nice Place and Show ticket at the Players, I'm avoiding the faves due to the low odds. This is basically a home course for Leonard, Verplank, Sabbatini, and to an extent, Campbell and Kim, but their odds have run me off. Probably a big mistake.
Here goes....

Poulter 15-1 win, 7 1/2 place, 3 1/2 show

Mahan 40-1 win, 20-1 place, 10-1 show

Gay 40-1 win, 20-1 place, 10-1 show

Dustin Johnson 60-1 win, 30-1 place, 15-1 show

Baird 60-1 win, 30-1 place, 15-1 show

Couples 100-1 win, 50-1 place, 25-1 show

Freddy is a sentimental, delusional play and a waste of money, but the cinderella aspect would be so damn fun that I just can't pass it up.
GLTA!

Did Kenny Perry cheat during his playoff victory at this year's FBR Open? The controversy is gaining steam on both sides of the Atlantic.

According to story from The Observer, PGA Tour officials met with Perry at The Players and cleared him of any wrong doing. John Paramor, chief referee of the European Tour, also says Perry is innocent, after having reviewed the video in question more than 100 times.

Why did Gay withdrawl from the players? Any injury questions? Opening round 80 is ugly specially the way that first round was played under perfect conditiosn and soft greens:shrug:

Not sure bud. But hes had some time off (the weekend there then the next week to recover) He has a nice record here, DL3 hasnt played here in like 10 years which tells me he doesnt like the course. DL3 just rode his bike to idaho on vacation, i doubt hes practiced much. Plus this is a home game for Gay, who is a lot better ball striker.

Round 1 plays (1pt):

Justin Leonard to beat Davis Love -133 @ Unibet
With 15 appearances in this event and just one missed cut, Leonard is not a player to oppose in this event (or in Texas generally). Quite a contrast with Love who hadn't returned since finishing 50th in 2002.

Brad Adamonis to beat Brendon Todd -125 @ Five Dimes
Easy to oppose a player ranked 172nd in Scoring Average on the Tour and making his course debut. 178th in Total Driving, 131st in Greens in Regulation, 171st in Scrambling ,174th in Putting Average; there isn't a part of Todd's game that isn't at the bottom of the PGA Tour Skill Stats rankings.

Eric Axley to beat David Mathis -130 @ Five Dimes
Two players struggling for form, but Mathis is making his course debut and Axley was the 1st round leader last year.

Kevin Sutherland to beat Daniel Chopra -130 @ Five Dimes
Two players in better form, but Sutherland still dominates. He has a 10-2-1 h2h lead over Chopra in the 1st round over the last 12 months and while Chopra has played in this event in each of the last five years, he has finished behind Sutherland on every occasion.

Adam Scott to beat Fred Couples -137 @ Unibet
It says a lot for Scott's loss of form that despite finishing 3rd and 1st in his two previous appearances here, he is paired with Couples who has played here only once since 2001 and missed the cut on that occasion. Yet, for all his loss of form, Scott has still to finish behind Couples in any event this year. So, with Scott stating that his game was 'close' at the Players Championship (when he beat Couples by six shots over two rounds), this appears to be a strong mismatch.
