Pacers rout James, Lakers 136-94
February 5, 2019
By The Associated Press

PHILADELPHIA (AP) Kyle Lowry had 20 points amid reports that Toronto has offered him in a trade, and the Raptors held off the Philadelphia 76ers 119-107 on Tuesday night in a matchup between two of the Eastern Conference's top teams.

Kawhi Leonard scored 24 points and Serge Ibaka had 20 points and 10 rebounds to help Toronto overcome another big game for Joel Embiid.

Embiid had 37 points and 13 rebounds for his league-leading 44th double-double. Ben Simmons scored 20 points for Philadelphia, and Jimmy Butler had 18.

Lowry seemed unfazed by a report from Sports Illustrated that Toronto had offered him to Memphis as part of a trade package for Mike Conley and Marc Gasol.

THUNDER 132, MAGIC 122

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Russell Westbrook posted his seventh straight triple-double, leading Oklahoma City to the win.

Westbrook finished with 16 points, 16 assists and 15 rebounds to match the longest triple-double streak of his career. It was his 20th of the season and No. 124 for his career.

Paul George scored 39 points to help the Thunder win for the eighth time in nine games. Dennis Schroder had 20 points.

Evan Fournier scored 25 points for the Magic, and Aaron Gordon added 18 points and 10 assists.

PACERS 136, LAKERS 94

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Bojan Bogdanovic scored 24 points and Indiana made 19 3-pointers while handing LeBron James the most lopsided loss of his career.

James' teams lost by 36 points twice previously.

Myles Turner had 22 points to help the Pacers pick up their third consecutive victory. Thaddeus Young finished with 12 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists.

James had 18 points, nine rebounds and seven assists in his second game back since injuring his groin on Christmas Day. He didn't play in the fourth quarter.

GRIZZLIES 108, TIMBERWOLVES 106

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Mike Conley had 25 points and nine assists in possibly his last game for Memphis, and the Grizzlies beat the Timberwolves on Justin Holiday's two free throws with .1 seconds remaining.

Jaren Jackson Jr. added 23 points for Memphis, which won its second straight game. Ivan Rabb had a career-high 19 points to go along with 11 rebounds.

Karl-Anthony Town had 26 points and 18 rebounds for Minnesota, and Dario Saric finished with 22 points.

The Grizzlies could move Conley and veteran center Marc Gasol ahead of Thursday's trade deadline. Gasol was a late scratch.

CELTICS 103, CAVALIERS 96

CLEVELAND (AP) - Jayson Tatum scored 25 points, and Boston earned its fifth straight victory despite missing All-Star guard Kyrie Irving.

A strained left hip prevented Irving from facing his former team, but the Celtics made up for his absence by getting 18 points from Gordon Hayward and 17 from Marcus Smart.

Rookie Collin Sexton scored 27 - but none in the fourth quarter - for the Cavs, who dropped to 3-20 since Dec. 19. Alec Burks, who has been linked to recent trade talks, added 21 for Cleveland. Larry Nance Jr. had 11 points and 12 rebounds.

Celtics coach Brad Stevens said Irving, who is averaging a team-high 23.8 points per game, may return Thursday when Boston hosts LeBron James and the Lakers, hours after the NBA's trade deadline.

CLIPPERS 117, HORNETS 115

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Tobias Harris scored 34 points, including a running jumper with 4.3 seconds remaining, and the Clippers rallied from 20 points down to secure the road win.

Charlotte had a chance to tie or take the lead on its last possession, but Marvin Williams' 3-point attempt was short at the buzzer.

Lou Williams scored 31 points for the Clippers. Montrezl Harrell added 16 and Patrick Beverley had 15 points in Los Angeles' third road game in four days.

Kemba Walker scored 32 points and Jeremy Lamb added 22 for the Hornets.

It was the second time this season Charlotte lost a game after leading by 20.

PISTONS 105, KNICKS 92

NEW YORK (AP) - Blake Griffin scored 29 points, Andre Drummond had 17 points and 15 rebounds, and the Pistons handed the Knicks their 14th straight loss.

Reggie Bullock and Reggie Jackson each added 19 points for the Pistons.

Dennis Smith Jr., playing his second game for New York, led the Knicks with 25 points.

New York has dropped a team-record 15 straight at Madison Square Garden. The Knicks haven't won since Jan. 4 against the Lakers in Los Angeles. Their last win at MSG was a 136-134 overtime victory against Milwaukee on Dec. 1.

HEAT 118. TRAILBLAZERS 108

Wednesday?s List of 13: Mid-week musings??.

13) Happy New Year to any Chinese friends we may have reading this: 2019 is Year of the Pig. This is from chinesenewyear.net:

?The Pig is the twelfth of all zodiac animals. According to one myth, the Jade Emperor said the order would be decided by the order in which they arrived to his party. Pig was late because he overslept. Another story says that a wolf destroyed his house. He had to rebuild his home before he could set off. When he arrived, he was the last one and could only take twelfth place.?

12) Looks like the bubble for the Field of 68 in March isn?t going to be very strong; Indiana just lost seven games in a row, and they?re still hanging on to one of the play-in spots.

Nebraska has been awful recently, losing their last five games; they?re 3-8 in the Big 14 and they?re not even listed as a 10-seed, not even a play-in team. They?re not a good team.

St John?s lost five of its last seven games, losing by 30 at Duke, but they?re an 11-seed.

A lot of this will play itself out, but the quality of college basketball has dropped a lot the last few years? just not as many real good teams, even with the big boys poaching role players from low major schools. Too many kids leave school early, hoping to get to the NBA, but they wind up in the G-League or in Europe. Staying in school would help them, and would help college ball.

11) Washington is the best team in the Pac-12; right now, they?re listed as an 8-seed, which means they probably don?t get out of the first weekend, if they even win a game. The Pac-12 is having a terrible season, in large part because they have a ton of inexperienced players.

10) Washington Wizards? star John Wall ruptured an achilles tendon, is out for a year; he last played Dec 26, had one procedure Jan 8 for a lesser achilles injury, then fell in his home and thats when his achilles tendon ruptured.

Wall has four years left on his contract after this year; he is scheduled to make $169.2M during those four years. No pressure on the surgeon who fixes his Achilles.

9) Michigan State loses G Joshua Langford for the season with an ankle injury; he was averaging 28.6 mpg, scoring 15.0 ppg, 2.3 assists/game and 3.6 rebounds/game. Spartans lost their last three games, at Purdue, Illinois and at home to Indiana, after an 18-1 start.

8) Eagles put the franchise tag on Nick Foles, in hopes of getting a 3rd-round draft pick in a trade for him, but then Foles negated that option by saying he?d pay Philly $2M to become a free agent.

There are several teams who need a quarterback.

7) Tennessee is #1 in country in basketball, but the last time Tennessee won the SEC basketball tournament was 1979; ten other schools have won the SEC tourney since then.

6) Why did Texas dump Rick Barnes? Longhorns are 16-29 in Big X games the last three years, and don?t play the ?havoc? style that made Shaka Smart?s VCU teams successful. Smart seems out of place at Texas; at VCU, he out-recruited his league and pressed successfully.

Barnes is 31-15 in SEC games the last three years at Tennessee.

5) Right now, Cal-Irvine and Stony Brook are the only two college basketball teams with ten road wins this season.

4) NBA teams with worst records vs spread on second night of back/backs:
Celtics 0-7, Nets 1-9, Kings 2-8, 76ers 2-6

NBA teams with best records vs spread on second night of back/backs:
Raptors 7-2, Wizards 6-2, Hornets 5-2, Nuggets 5-2-1

3) The new AAF that starts this weekend has no kickoffs, and teams that score TD?s have to go for 2 points every time- no PAT?s. No TV timeouts; games are expected to last 2:30 at most.

2) Odd fact: Baltimore/Indianapolis Colts have played in four Super Bowls, all of which were played in Miami. Next year?s Super Bowl is in Miami.

1) Sports Illustrated throws a party the night before the Super Bowl every year; saw a clip on Twitter of this year?s party, where Snoop Dawg was talking to Urban Meyer for a couple minutes. Would?ve been fun to listen in on that; talk about worlds colliding. Snoop does know his football, though.

Wednesday's Essentials
Tony Mejia

Game of the Night - Houston (-2.5, 232.5) at Sacramento , 10:05 ET

The Clippers unloaded All-Star Tobias Harris overnight, essentially punting on their realistic playoff aspirations. Considering they enter Wednesday as the No.8 seed in the Western Conference if the regular season ended today, that?s kind of a big deal. For the Kings, it's huge since they're just a half-game behind the Clips.

We?re closing in on the 2018-19 trade deadline. It promises to be a juicy one. L.A. unloaded Harris to set itself up for the courtship of Kawhi Leonard and another max player while stockpiling draft picks and improving its chances at building a future super team to rival the Lakers and Warriors.

There?s a good chance that all three will be loaded and considered among the league?s top eight teams as early as next season, which puts pressure on Sacramento speed up its progression if it is going to keep up and finally emerge from being an afterthought in the Golden State.

If the Kings are going to compete in the Pacific Division, they?ll need the talent they?ve already put in place to continue to flourish, and it wouldn?t hurt for them to mix in a little playoff experience. Currently up two games on the Lakers for the No. 9 spot, Sacramento has set itself up nicely to compete for what would be its first postseason appearance since 2006. That?s the last time it finished over .500.

Sacramento has lost 49 or more games in nine of the last 10 years, but has won three straight to own what is currently the longest winning streak in the Western Conference. All the victories have come at home as it works its way through a six-game homestand where it has taken down the Hawks, 76ers and Spurs.

The Kings remain a 500-to-1 shot to win the Western Conference according to the latest Westgate Superbook odds, ahead of only the Suns and Grizzlies and on par with the Mavs, so they?re still a decided underdog. Despite victories in seven consecutive games at the Golden 1 Center, Sacramento is getting points for the third straight time with Houston in town.

The Rockets arrive tied with San Antonio atop the Northwest Division but are only up three games on the Kings. Houston is on the final leg of a four-game road trip that opened with a 136-122 loss in Denver but continued with comfortable wins in Utah and Phoenix.

James Harden has topped the 40-point mark in each of those games and put together a scoring average (36.5) over the first 50 games that hasn?t been seen in the NBA since Michael Jordan in ?86-?87. Harden has scored at least 30 points in 27 straight games and finished with 34 on Nov. 17 in the only meeting with Sacramento this season, a 132-112 rout at the Toyota Center.

Shooting guard Buddy Hield scored a team-high 23 points in the loss but ended up a team-worst minus-23, unable to get anything done on the defensive end. Center Willie Cauley-Stein is enjoying his best campaign in a contract year but shot just 1-for-9 in that game. 19-year-old power forward Marvin Bagley III, the 2018 Draft?s No. 2 pick, made seven of his 10 shots in the loss and is the top reason why the Kings can be optimistic things can turn around in this rematch.

Bagley has really picked up steam over the past few weeks and comes off a career-high 24 points and 12 rebounds against the Spurs, putting together his third straight double-double. Together with second-year forward Harry Giles, who sat out most of last season, the Kings have put together an effective second unit that head coach Dave Joerger can count on to change the momentum of games. Sacramento?s edge in depth is one reason it has to be considered a live ?dog against the Rockets, who had won three straight in California?s capital city before being turned away on their most recent trip last April in a 96-83 loss in which Harden, Chris Paul, Clint Capela and Eric Gordon all sat to rest up for last season?s playoffs.

Capela (thumb) remains out, but Gordon (knee) may return from a bout with knee soreness that sidelined him on Monday night against the Suns. Chris Paul returned from a lengthy absence last week and played 33 minutes in Phoenix, so he?s looking more comfortable. Kenneth Faried has averaged 16.0 points and 8.0 rebounds since signing to help replace Capela and is shooting 70 percent from the field this month, building chemistry with Harden and Paul on lobs around the basket. Houston is 5-3 since Faried joined the lineup.

The Kings are currently third in the NBA in pace (105.7), trailing only the Hawks and Thunder. While Rockets head coach Mike D?Antoni likely envies Sacramento getting up and down the floor, the presence of Harden and Paul force his hand in relying on two of the top isolation guys in the league, so Houston ranks 27th, utilizing 100.2 possessions per game. Expect this contest to be a contrast in styles as a result, making it key that the Kings avoid being slowed down by fouling Harden, who won?t make it easy since he is tops in the league in drawing contact and getting toe the free-throw stripe by a wide margin.

Despite the slower tempo, Houston has seen the ?over? prevail in four straight games, averaging 120.3 points. It?s 2-1 when the total closes over 230 in Rockets? games, as this game should. The ?under? cashed 10 consecutive times in Kings? contests from Jan. 7-25 but is just 1-2-1 over their last four.

Best of the Rest

Denver at Brooklyn, 7:05 p.m. ET:
The Nets surprised the Nuggets in Denver 112-110 on Nov. 8, so they?ll have a revenge factor to deal with as they look to snap their first three-game losing streak in months. Brooklyn has been the Eastern Conference?s biggest surprise over the last few weeks but could slip back to .500 if they don?t solve a mini-funk offensively that?s seen them score fewer than 95 points in back-to-back games for the first time since Kenny Atkinson took over in ?16. The Nets shot a season-low 32 percent against the Bucks, finishing 5-for-42 from 3-point range. Denver comes off a blowout loss in Detroit, falling 129-103 without key contributors Jamal Murray (ankle), Paul Millsap (ankle) and Gary Harris (groin). Monitor their availability before pulling the trigger here. Brooklyn will get back shooters Joe Harris and Allen Crabbe to try and improve on its brutal showing from beyond the arc on Monday night.

Charlotte at Dallas, 8:35 p.m. ET:
The Hornets were rumored to be in discussions with Memphis to bring Marc Gasol on board, so keep an eye out to see if there?s a deal made since any transaction would leave Charlotte short-handed for this road game. The Hornets are already likely going to be without backup point guard Tony Parker and will be playing the second of a back-to-back after fading down the stretch in a home loss to the Clippers on Tuesday. The Mavs won in Charlotte 122-84 on Jan. 2, holding the Bees to 35.6 percent shooting. DeAndre Jordan, Dennis Smith, Jr. and Wes Matthews all played key roles in that rout but now find themselves with the Knicks, while Tim Hardaway, Jr. and Trey Burke will make their debuts with Dallas tonight. Rick Carlisle is expected to tinker with rotations against a Hornets squad that blew a 20-point lead against L.A., falling below .500. Charlotte leads the Southeast Division by a half-game over Miami.

San Antonio at Golden State, 10:35 p.m. ET:
The Spurs enter the day tied with the Rockets atop the Southwest but forfeited ?Game of the Day? status by declaring this a ?rest night? for DeMar DeRozan and LaMarcus Aldridge. San Antonio will look to beat the Trail Blazers in Portland on Thursday and remains without point guard Derrick White (heel), their top defender. Bryn Forbes and Davis Bertans are likely to start alongside Rudy Gay, center Jakob Poeltl and either Marco Belinelli or rookie Lonnie Walker IV, who has called up from the G-League earlier this week. The Warriors will play again in Phoenix on Friday and should be formidable as they look to put this game out of reach inside three quarters.

Giannis, Bucks drop 148 points on Wizards for 40th win
February 6, 2019
By The Associated Press

MILWAUKEE (AP) Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 43 points, Eric Bledsoe had 22 points and 11 assists, and the Milwaukee Bucks beat the Washington Wizards 148-129 on Wednesday night for their fifth consecutive victory.

The Bucks shot 60 percent (56 for 93) from the field and placed six players in double figures while becoming the first NBA team with 40 victories. Malcolm Brogdon had 18 points, and Khris Middleton finished with 16.

Washington trailed by as many as 25 in the first half, but closed to 120-113 on Chasson Randle's layup with 10:22 left.

Bledsoe helped finish off the Wizards with 10 points in a quick scoring flurry, including a dunk off a missed free throw by Antetokounmpo. He made a 3-pointer with 7:07 remaining to make it 138-118.

Bradley Beal led Washington with 30 points, and Thomas Bryant had 26. Jeff Green finished with 22 points for his fourth straight game with 20 or more.

MAVERICKS 99, HORNETS 93

DALLAS (AP) - Luka Doncic scored 19 points in his third triple-double, Dorian Finney-Smith had 15 points and 10 rebounds and new-look Dallas made another move by trading Harrison Barnes while beating Charlotte.

Tim Hardaway Jr. scored 12 points in his Dallas debut after the blockbuster deal that brought Kristaps Porzingis from the New York Knicks.

Barnes played into the third quarter before reports of a trade with Sacramento surfaced. He was on the bench but didn't play in the fourth quarter. Barnes scored seven of his 10 points in the third.

Kemba Walker had 30 points and 11 rebounds for the Hornets, who got swept by Dallas after losing to the Mavericks by 38 points at home about a month ago.

NETS 135, NUGGETS 130

NEW YORK (AP) - D'Angelo Russell had 27 points and 11 assists, and Brooklyn surpassed last season's win total by beating Denver.

Russell made six of the Nets' 19 3-pointers, one game after they made only five as a team in their poorest shooting performance of the season.

DeMarre Carroll added 18 points, 10 rebounds and six assists for Brooklyn (29-27), which got two key injured players back and led by 21 points in ending a three-game skid. Joe Harris scored 17 points and Treveon Graham had 16, with four 3-pointers.

Nikola Jokic had 25 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists in his 10th triple-double of the season for the Nuggets, who have lost two straight games to fall out of a tie for the Western Conference lead.

PELICANS 125, BULLS 120

CHICAGO (AP) - Julius Randle scored 31 points, and New Orleans beat struggling Chicago with All-Star Anthony Davis watching from the bench.

Davis was healthy enough to return from a sprained left index finger that has sidelined him since Jan. 18. But the Pelicans opted to hold him out with Thursday's trade deadline approaching.

The six-time All-Star has made it known he wants out of New Orleans.

Randle scored 19 in a blistering fourth quarter and finished six points shy of his season high.

Jrue Holiday and Cheick Diallo each scored 18, and Chicago product Jahlil Okafor finished with 13 points.

Lauri Markkanen led Chicago with 30 points and 10 rebounds. Zach LaVine scored 28, and Kris Dunn added 18 points and eight assists.

ROCKETS 127, KINGS 101

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - James Harden made eight 3-pointers and scored 36 points, helping Houston beat Sacramento.

The Rockets won their third straight game, and they appeared to be on the verge of adding Iman Shumpert to their array of talented shooters. Gerald Green matched his season high with 25 points, and Eric Gordon scored 20 points.

Houston, Sacramento and Cleveland were working on a trade that will most notably send Shumpert from the Kings to the Rockets.

Buddy Hield had 20 points and 10 rebounds for the Kings.

JAZZ 116, SUNS 88

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Donovan Mitchell scored 21 points and Joe Ingles had a career-high 11 assists, leading Utah past Phoenix.

Rudy Gobert added 16 points and 12 rebounds as Utah won for the fifth time in seven games. Ingles and reserve Royce O'Neale each finished with 15 points.

Phoenix committed 22 turnovers in its 12th straight loss. Josh Jackson matched his season high with 27 points, and DeAndre Ayton had 20 points and nine rebounds.

Pels F Davis remains in trade limbo
February 6, 2019
By The Associated Press

MIAMI (AP) Anthony Davis is still a member of the New Orleans Pelicans.

By 3 p.m. Thursday, that may change.

Davis remained in place Wednesday, though the run-up to the NBA's annual trade deadline picked up steam in plenty of other locales around the league - including Dallas, where the Mavericks took Harrison Barnes out of their win over Charlotte in the third quarter because he's about to get moved to Sacramento, according to two people familiar with the negotiations there.

''I got word of it during the game,'' Dallas coach Rick Carlisle said.

Tobias Harris going to Philadelphia from the Los Angeles Clippers as the centerpiece of a six-person, four-draft-pick swap was the first notable deal of Trade Deadline Eve. Later, Chicago agreed to acquire Otto Porter Jr. from Washington for Jabari Parker and Bobby Portis. The Mavs and Kings agreed to swap Barnes for Zach Randolph and Justin Jackson, and as the day was winding down the Wizards struck again - this time sending Markieff Morris to New Orleans for Wesley Johnson.

The Mavs-Kings and Wizards-Pelicans deals were confirmed to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity by people directly involved in the negotiations, all speaking on condition of anonymity pending the mandatory NBA trade calls to make the deals official.

''Part of the business,'' New Orleans coach Alvin Gentry said.

And business, on Wednesday, was busy - as expected.

The Dallas-Sacramento deal will be significant for both sides.

The Kings are trying to get into the Western Conference playoffs, and now can add Barnes to their promising young core. Barnes has a $25.1 million player option for next season. Meanwhile, Dallas - which got Kristaps Porzingis and Tim Hardaway Jr. from New York last week in a massive deal - will have tons of salary-cap space to spend in the coming months as it looks to add more pieces around Luka Doncic.

''Things are going to look different on the court,'' said Carlisle, who wished Barnes well and told him after Dallas' game that he believes the Sacramento deal is a good situation for him.

Harris, Boban Marjanovic and Mike Scott went to the 76ers, while Wilson Chandler, Mike Muscala and Landry Shamet went to the Clippers. Philadelphia - with an eye on moving way up from the No. 5 spot in the Eastern Conference - also gave up a protected 2020 first-round pick, a 2021 first-rounder that was once owned by Miami, and second-rounders in 2021 and 2023 through Detroit.

''We are in the unique position to contend now and we think this trade positions us well for the postseason,'' 76ers general manager Elton Brand said.

Porter will be headed to Chicago, with the Wizards taking back Parker and Portis. Parker has been bracing for a trade, and moving Porter is a financial win if nothing else for Washington. So is the move that sends Morris to the Pelicans, one that should get the Wizards out of having to pay anything in luxury tax this season.

Another deal with tax ramifications was worked out between Miami and Phoenix. The Heat sent Tyler Johnson and Wayne Ellington to the Suns for Ryan Anderson, helping alleviate the logjam of guards that Miami coach Erik Spoelstra has been dealing with all season - plus considerably lowering the Heat's expected luxury tax bill. It's likely that Ellington will be a buyout candidate, and therefore would be able to pick his own spot to finish the season.

''This business is tough but this kid is tougher,'' Heat guard Dwyane Wade wrote on Twitter, talking about Johnson. And later, he told Ellington he has ''a brother for life.''

Meanwhile, Davis remained in place and out of uniform.

The Pelicans haven't played him since he and agent Rich Paul went public last week with their trade request, and decided not to play the six-time All-Star in Chicago on Wednesday either. The reasons for that were obvious; in case a deal can be made, it's not worth it for the Pelicans to risk an injury.

''It's going to eventually get resolved,'' Gentry said.

There will be resolution - maybe just partial resolution, but resolution nonetheless - when the deadline arrives Thursday afternoon. Davis is still under contract for next season, so the Pelicans are in a slippery spot where they don't need to deal their best player now for fear of losing him in July for nothing but also know that he doesn't want to remain in New Orleans.

If the Pelicans don't trade Davis by Thursday, they'll almost certainly be back in the depths of trade talks in June and July - draft time and free agency.

''I mean, obviously, it's on everyone's mind,'' Gentry said. ''But we just try to put it on the back burner and focus on the task at hand and that's playing the Chicago Bulls. Not anything we can do about it. ... I think everything kind of clears up after (Thursday), at least for a while. And you can go back to I guess normal, or whatever our new normal is going to be.''

In other trades Wednesday:

- A person familiar with the terms said NBA-leading Milwaukee was sending center Thon Maker to the Detroit Pistons for forward Stanley Johnson. Both were lottery picks, Johnson in 2015 and Maker a year later. That trade was also pending the NBA reviewing the financial terms and approving, which is required for any deal to become final.

- The Los Angeles Lakers - one of the teams known to want Davis - made another deal, getting Reggie Bullock from the Detroit Pistons for rookie guard Svi Mykhailiuk. Bullock is a shooter, and Lakers star LeBron James loves surrounding himself with those. Bullock is making nearly 39 percent of his 3-point tries this season. Mykhailiuk has averaged 3.3 points in 39 appearances.

- Philadelphia swung a deal with Toronto, getting Malachi Richardson and some draft considerations for cash. Richardson appeared in 23 games during two seasons with the Raptors.

- Two people with knowledge of the deal say Houston, Sacramento and Cleveland are finishing a trade that will most notably send Iman Shumpert from the Kings to the Rockets. Houston is sending Brandon Knight and Marquese Chriss to the Cavaliers. Alec Burks - now traded for the second time this season, after starting the year in Utah - will go from the Cavaliers to the Kings, when the league signs off on the necessary matters.

? LSU 92, Mississippi State 88 OT? Really good game that felt like a March game.

Quote of the Day
?A successful man is one who can lay a firm foundation with the bricks others have thrown at him.?

Thursday?s quiz
Where was the Oklahoma City Thunder franchise located, before they moved to Oklahoma?

Wednesday?s quiz
TV analyst Bill Raftery used to be basketball coach at Seton Hall.

Tuesday?s quiz
St Louis Blues made the Stanley Cup finals in its first three years in existence, in the late 60?s/early 70?s, but went 0-12 those three Finals series.

Thursday?s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud

13) MLB has suggested a rule requiring pitchers to face a minimum of three batters in each appearance, to lessen the tedious lefty/righty pitching changes that make the end of games drag out endlessly. In one game last year, a team used five relievers in one inning, with each pitcher facing one guy.

12) Also looks like the DH could be in the NL soon, as soon as in this year or next, which makes the Mets? acquiring Robinson Cano look better. The players? union would like the DH to be put into place this season in the NL, probably because DH?s make a lot more money than the average player.

Last season, pitchers batted .115 with a .144 on-base %age and .149 slugging %age in 4,524 at-bats.

11) Big trade in the NBA late Tuesday night; Clippers traded Tobias Harris, Boban Marjanovic, Mike Scott to the 76ers for Landry Shamet, Wilson Chandler, Mike Muscala, a ?20 1st-round draft pick, ?21 unprotected 1st round pick and two 2nd round picks.

Elton Brand is Philly?s GM, and he is being very aggressive in his trading.

10) Kansas-Kansas State game Tuesday night was a joy to listen to; Jon Sciambi calling the action, with Stan Van Gundy/Chauncey Billups doing analysis. Really good team of guys, no screaming, no BS, they talked about basketball with enthusiasm and it was great.

9) Tuesday night also was the 20th anniversary of the first time Mike Breen/Walt Frazier worked together on a Knicks? telecast; they?re an excellent team.

I was lucky enough to meet Walt Frazier at the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas a few years ago; he was friendly, enjoyed talking when he really had no reason to be nice to me, a stranger. He?s a good guy, a great ambassador for the NBA and the Knicks.

8) Atlanta Falcons released 43-year old kicker Matt Bryant, who had two years left on his contract; he was 20-21 on FG?s this past season, and had been with the Falcons for the last decade.

7) Odds to win the AAF, the new football league:
5-2: Arizona Hotshots
4-1: Salt Lake Stallions
5-1: Atlanta, Orlando, San Antonio
10-1: Birmingham, Memphis, San Diego

Not sure how you come up with odds for a brand-new league, but they did.

6) One thing that will be coming up soon that is a little odd; Conference USA has left the last four games of its teams? conference schedules blank. After the games of Feb 16, the league will then schedule those games, with top teams playing each other, to increase all their power rankings, in hopes of getting an at-large (they ain?t getting one).

Maybe the C-USA survivor will get a better NCAA seed; this is the first time this approach has been tried, so we?ll see how it works.

5) Roger Staubach turned 77 this week; typing that made me feel old.

He is my sleeper answer to the question: ?If you had the ball on your 20 with 2:00 left, down 3, who would you want as your QB?? I?m not a Dallas fan, but he was a great player.

4) Former Oklahoma football coach Bob Stoops re-emerged Wednesday as the coach/GM of the Dallas franchise in the XFL, a new league that will begin play in the spring of 2020.

3) This is an interesting number: 40% of all men?s basketball players who enter Division I directly out of high school leave their first college by the end of their sophomore year.

2) Damn, that happened fast; one of Kirk Herbstreit?s sons signed on to play DB at Clemson next season. I remember when Herbstreit would bring his kids on the College GameDay set, and they were all little kids. Time flies.

1) Next year is the NFL?s 100th season, and it sounds like they?re going to start with a Packers-Bears Thursday night matchup in Week 1, the oldest rivalry in the league.

Inside the Paint - Thursday
Chris David

The NBA trade deadline takes place today at 3:00 p.m. ET and handicapping the card on this day is never easy, especially with 12 teams in action. I?d tread lightly with early wagers, knowing that anything can happen throughout the day. Let?s handicap the card.

East hosts West

Minnesota (25-28 SU, 26-27 ATS) at Orlando (22-32 SU, 27-26-1 ATS):
The Timberwolves blasted the Magic 120-103 on Jan. 4 as four-point home favorites and the ?over? (214) connected. Including that win, Minnesota has won four of the last five against the Orlando and the high side has cashed in all of the victories. The T-Wolves have gone both 10-7 SU and 10-7 ATS versus the Eastern Conference this season, which includes a 4-3 SU and 5-2 ATS record on the road. The ?over? has cashed in nine straight games vs. the East for Minnesota.

This is a tough spot for Orlando, who is coming off a 132-122 loss at Oklahoma City on Tuesday as a nine-point road underdog. After this game, they had back on the road for three more games. The Magic have won two straight at home and against solid opponents (Pacers, Nets) as well but they have haven?t fared well in non-conference games this season (6-17 SU, 9-14 ATS). At home, the club has gone 3-7 both SU and ATS while the ?over? is 7-3.

Orlando opened as a one-point favorite and was quickly pushed to -2. As a home favorite, the Magic are just 6-6 this season, 5-7 ATS and that includes the two recent wins mentioned above versus Indiana and Brooklyn.

L.A. Clippers (30-25 SU, 29-25-1 ATS) at Indiana (35-19 SU, 26-27-1 ATS):
Tough game to handicap as the Clippers were involved in a trade on Wednesday morning, which sent Tobias Harris and a couple reserves to Philadelphia. L.A. improved to 2-1 on its current six-game road trip this past Tuesday with a 117-115 win at Charlotte as a three-point road underdog. Including that win, the Clippers have gone 11-8 both SU and ATS versus the East. Make a note that Los Angeles has gone 7-3 both SU and ATS on the road in non-conference games but the absence of Harris changes everything.

After dropping its first four games without Victor Oladipo, the Pacers have won rebounded with three straight wins. Indiana has gone 10-9 SU and 9-10 ATS this season versus the Western Conference and that includes a 6-4 both SU and ATS mark at home. One of those wins came on Tuesday, a 136-94 blowout decision over the L.A. Lakers.

This will be the first meeting between the pair this season. Indiana has won and covered four straight games in this series. The Pacers opened as four-point home favorites and now sit at -6 as of late this morning.

Pending Domination?

Barring any major trades, these games will likely have the largest spreads on Thursday and we could be looking at easy ?chalk? winners if recent head-to-head history holds.

Toronto (39-16 SU, 24-30-1 ATS) at Atlanta (18-35 SU, 24-29 ATS):
The Raptors have won six straight against the Hawks and they?ve covered five of those games. The pair met in Canada on Jan. 8 and Atlanta put forth a great effort but still fell to Toronto 104-101 as a 13 ?-point road underdog. The ?under? has gone 5-1 in the last six encounters. The Raptors as 10-point road favorites but the early money moved the line to Atlanta +9. The Hawks are coming off a solid road trip (4-3 SU, 4-3 ATS) but the first game back at home is never easy and they?ve been better away this season than at home (8-113 SU, 7-14 ATS).

Memphis (22-33 SU, 24-30-1 ATS) at Oklahoma City (34-19 SU, 30-23 ATS):
The Thunder have captured seven straight and nine of their last 10 meetings with the Grizzlies. Oklahoma City has gone 7-3 ATS during this span. Total bettors should note that the ?over? is on a 9-2 run in this series. Memphis is expected to be short-handed with center Marc Gasol resting and possibly other players involved in trades. The Thunder have gone 5-3 SU and 3-5 ATS when listed as a double-digit home favorite this season.

TNT Action

L.A. Lakers (27-27 SU, 23-29-2 ATS) at Boston (35-19 SU, 27-26-1 ATS):
Both of these teams have been featured in trade speculation for the past week, more so the Lakers and their hopes of acquiring Anthony Davis from the Pelicans. Los Angeles was embarrassed 136-94 at Indiana on Tuesday and is now 1-2 since LeBron James returned to action and they currently sit on the outside of the playoffs.

While the Lakers aren?t connecting, Boston has quietly won five straight and 10 of its last 11 games. The Celtics have gone 5-5-1 ATS during this run. At TD Garden, Boston has gone 17-3 SU and 14-6 ATS in its last 20 at home and the offense is averaging 119 points per game during this span, which has helped the ?over? go 13-7.

Boston opened -7 ? and the number was pushed to -9. The assumption is that the Lakers will likely pull off a major deal and be short-handed for this game.

The Celtics (10-9 SU, 8-11 ATS) versus the West, 5-3 SU and 4-4 ATS at home. While Boston has been pedestrian in non-conference matchups, L.A. has been awful for bettors versus the East, going 8-9 SU and 4-12-1 ATS. Outside of the Staples Center, the Lakers have gone 3-4 SU and 2-5 ATS.

Boston owns a 4-1 record in the last five games of this series, but Los Angeles has gone 3-2 ATS during this span while the ?under? is 4-1 during this span.

This game is set to tip at 8:05 p.m. ET nationally on TNT.

San Antonio (32-23 SU, 31-23-1 ATS) at Portland (32-21 SU, 29-24 ATS):
The ?Rodeo Road Trip? for the Spurs hasn?t started out well as the team was blasted by the Kings on Monday (127-112) before getting hammered 141-102 at Golden State last night. Even though the Spurs are facing a back-to-back spot on Thursday, they shouldn?t be too fatigued as they rested DeMar DeRozan and LaMarcus Aldridge in last night?s loss. After dropping its first six games of the season on no rest, San Antonio has won its last three games in this situation but two of them took place at home. The ?over? has gone 8-1 for the Spurs on no rest this season.

Portland is coming off a rare 118-108 home loss on Tuesday to Miami, which dropped their record to 22-8 SU and 19-11 ATS at the Moda Center. Prior to that setback, the Trail Blazers had won eight straight (7-1 ATS) at home. Make a note that Portland hasn?t lost two straight at home this season and the early money moved the Blazers from 4 to 5 ?-point favorites for this game.

Sticking with the home theme, the host has won and covered the last three meetings in this series, which includes both matchups this season and all three were decided by double digits. Portland captured a 121-108 win at the Moda Center on Oct. 20 before San Antonio avenged that loss with a 131-118 victory on Dec. 2.

Total bettors should note that the ?over? is on an 8-2 run in this series and that includes four straight tickets to the high side.

TNT will provide national coverage of this game at 10:35 p.m. ET.
