Raptors top Heat 106-104, improve NBA's best record
December 26, 2018
By The Associated Press

MIAMI (AP) Kawhi Leonard scored 30 points, Danny Green's 3-pointer with 22.7 seconds left put Toronto ahead for good and the Raptors improved the NBA's best record to 26-10 by topping the Miami Heat 106-104 on Wednesday night.

Green had 18 points and Fred VanVleet added 16 for the Raptors, who survived a wild fourth quarter that saw 12 lead changes and four ties. Miami had three shots on the game's final possession, with Dwyane Wade and Justise Winslow missing 3s and Wade having a chance at a tip-in that wouldn't fall.

Winslow scored 21 points for Miami, which saw its five-game winning streak snapped. Josh Richardson scored 17 and Hassan Whiteside scored 16 for Miami, which was 6 for 12 from the foul line - while Toronto was 19 for 23.

Kemba Walker scored 35 points for the Hornets, but the Nets turned to a zone defense and whatever else they could do to force the ball out of his hands as much as possible late in the game. Jeremy Lamb added 31 points in the opener of a home-and-home series.

PISTONS 106, WIZARDS 95

DETROIT (AP) - Blake Griffin had 23 points and nine rebounds, Andre Drummond got his 10th straight double-double, and Detroit beat Washington.

Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

Last six years, an NFL team that started 0-2 made the playoffs:

2018- Seahawks 0-2, Texans 0-3

2017- Saints 0-2

2016- Dolphins 0-2

2015- Texans 0-2, Seahawks 0-2

2014- Colts 0-2

2013- Panthers 0-2

**********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Mid-week musings??.

13) Spent a while in Harrah?s sportsbook Monday night; they?ve improved it some. While I?m there, ESPN is playing Scott Van Pelt?s ?Bad Beats? segment on weird losses in gambling- the 10 or 12 people in the book loved the segment. Was fun to watch it there.

12) Walking on the Strip for a half hour or so on Christmas Eve was fun; cars totally covered in Christmas lights on the strip, people throwing candy out of the back of a pickup truck to kids on the sidewalk. Lot of people walking, most of whom did not speak English, almost all of whom were taking pictures with their phones. Interesting experience.

11) Case Keenum?s NFL career:
? 2012-14 Texans? Went 2-8 in ten starts, all in 2o13-14. Went to the Rams during 2014 season, traded for a 7th round draft pick.
? 2014-16 Rams? 7-7 in 16 games (14 starts): those weren?t good Ram clubs and Jeff Fisher was the coach? he didn?t hire the best offensive assistants. 7-7 in those games wasn?t too shabby.
? 2017? Vikings? 11-3 in 14 starts, then split two playoff games, including the GW pass to Diggs that might be the greatest moment in Vikings? history.
? 2018? Broncos? 6-9 this year, and the ship is sinking. Looks like coach Joseph will be told to take a hike. Will Keenum follow him out of town? He could be playing for his 4th team in four years next season.

10) ESPN?s Monday night analysts, Jason Witten/Booger McFarland, have been more critical the last couple weeks- they were KILLING the Broncos Monday night, and were circling players for lack of effort late in that game.

I?m not criticizing them for doing this; think it would be nice if more analysts simply told the truth, but it is unusual to hear.

9) Notre Dame QB Brandon Wimbush is transferring; he started 12 games LY, four games this year? his W-L record as a college starter is 12-3. He has one year of eligibility left.

How come every former starter/backup QB in the country transfers, but not Jalen Hurts??? LOL

Some notes on NBA back-to-backs??
8) Road underdogs who are playing 2nd consecutive night on road: 22-23-1 vs spread.

Road favorites playing who are 2nd consecutive night on road: 7-7 vs spread.

7) Home favorites who played on road night before: 10-12-1 vs spread.

Home underdogs who played at home night before: 5-5 vs spread.

6) Road underdogs who played at home night before: 10-15-1 vs spread.

5) Over/under of road teams who played night before: over 46-34.

Elsewhere??.
4) Arizona Cardinals signed DJ Swearinger after the Redskins cut him because he wouldn?t stop criticizing Washington?s coaches/team.

Swearinger has played for four teams in his six-year NFL career; this is his second tour of duty with Arizona. If he wants to keep playing in the NFL, maybe he should try shutting his mouth for a while, whether he is right or wrong about what he says.

3) Understood that the NBA doesn?t give a rat?s ass what a 59-year old Caucasian thinks, but the uniforms Knicks-Bucks wore Christmas Day were ugly, really ugly.

2) Liev Schrieber?s character Ray Donovan almost got thru a whole hour of his Showtime series this week without getting beat up. Almost.

Ray Donovan is a really well-done show; they have Susan Sarandon/Jon Voight as supporting actors, and added Alan Alda this week a a psychiatrist. Quite a cast, but Ray has taken a severe physical beating this year. It isn?t always the most uplifting, optimistic show.

1) Here at the Vdara Hotel, a terrific place to stay, it turns out that if you decline maid service 2-3 days in a row, they send someone to your room, to make sure you?re not dead. Seriously.

Lady knocked on my door Tuesday morning, called it ?a wellness check?; I?m just fine, ma?am, you have a nice Christmas, too.

Inside the Paint - Thursday
Chris David

After watching favorites go 3-2 both straight up and against the spread on Christmas, we saw the ?chalk? push ahead last night with a 9-1 record on the hardwood last night. A couple underdogs did manage to salvage covers which left the favorites overall number standing at 7-3 ATS. Wednesday was a solid night for ?over? bettors as the high side went 7-3, which was a nice turnaround after the holiday ?under? trend continued this season with a 3-2 mark.

Thursday?s card will feature nine of the 10 teams that played on Christmas, which includes a solid non-conference double-header on TNT.

Boston (20-13 SU, 17-16 ATS) at Houston (18-15 SU, 15-17-1 ATS)

The Rockets opened as one-point home favorites but as of Tuesday morning, the game was ?OFF? the board due to the ?questionable? status of James Harden (calf). The All-Star scored 41 points on Tuesday as Houston dropped Oklahoma City 113-109 as a one-point home underdog. The Rockets were playing without Chris Paul (hamstring) for the second consecutive game and they improved to 2-5 without him in the lineup this season. Continuing to post wins without Paul won?t be as easy, especially against a Boston team that?s coming together.

After a 10-10- start, the Celtics have gone 10-3 and that includes their 121-114 Christmas Day win and miracle cover at home against the 76ers in overtime as five-point favorites. Kyrie Irving forced the extra session with a late bucket before they outscored Philly 13-6 in OT. Boston hasn?t been as strong on the road this season (9-8 SU, 7-10 ATS) but it enters this game with a 5-2 record both SU and ATS in its last seven away games.

Houston started the season 0-4 at the Toyota Center but has gone 11-1 since then and more importantly, the club has posted an impressive 9-2-1 ATS during this run while the ?over? has gone 8-4.

The pair have split all four of their recent encounters over the last two seasons and the home team came out on top in every game but the Celtics went 4-0 ATS during this span as three of the games were decided by three points or less. Total bettors should note that this series has watched the ?under? go 8-2 in the last 10 meetings.

TNT will provide national coverage of this game at 8:05 p.m. ET.

New York (9-26 SU, 16-18-1 ATS) at Milwaukee (23-10 SU, 17-15-1 ATS)

This is a quick home-and-home set as the Bucks dropped the Knicks 109-95 on Christmas as 9 ?-point road favorites. Including that win, Milwaukee is now 8-2 in its last 10 encounters against New York and that includes a 2-1 record this season. The pair met in Wisconsin on Oct. 22 and the Bucks captured a 124-113 win as 10 ?-point home favorites. New York (5-14 SU, 10-9 ATS) has surprisingly won more road games this season but it hasn?t fared well away recently. The Knicks are 1-6 (3-4 ATS) in their last seven and the lone win came at Charlotte, who blew a big lead in that game.

Milwaukee is listed as a 14 ?-point home favorite for Thursday?s match and if the Bucks hit from distance, this number could easily be covered. On Tuesday, they were just 6-of-32 (19%) from 3-point land and they still won by 14 points on the road. The Bucks have gone 4-1 SU and 3-2 ATS as double-digit home favorites this season. This will be the first game of a six-game road trip for New York while Milwaukee is beginning a five-game homestand at the Fiserv Forum.

L.A. Lakers (20-14 SU, 14-19-1 ATS) at Sacramento (18-16 SU, 21-12-1 ATS)

Tough game to handicap as the Los Angles Lakers will be playing without LeBron James (groin) tonight after he was injured on Christmas. Despite going down, the team pushed ahead and dropped Golden State 127-101 as a nine-point road underdog on Tuesday. Will the club step up again on Thursday?

Los Angeles dropped Sacramento 101-86 as a 5 ?-point road favorite on Nov. 10 and the ?under? (237) was never in doubt. For the rematch, the Kings opened as 3 ?-point home favorites and they?ll be playing with no rest after losing a 127-118 decision to the Clippers at the Staples Center on Wednesday. Sacramento won its first two games of the season on zero days rest but has since dropped five straight back-to-back situations. Two of the losses during this skid came at home and that included the aforementioned loss to the Lakers.

While the rest angle could have you backing off the Kings, they certainly deserve a look as favorites. Sacramento has gone 5-0 both SU and ATS when laying points this season, surprisingly four of those results occurred on the road.

The total on the game opened 229 ? and was pushed up quickly to 231. The Lakers enter the game on a 4-0 ?under? streak but Sacramento has been the best ?over? (23-11) team in the NBA and it brings a 7-1 lean to the high side into tonight?s game. Be aware that the total results (8-8) for Sacramento have been even at the Golden 1 Center this season.

Portland (19-15 SU, 16-18 ATS) at Golden State (23-12 SU, 14-21 ATS)

The Trail Blazers lost by 24 points (117-96) at the Jazz on Christmas while the Warriors were embarrassed on the holiday at home to the Lakers by 26 (127-102). Can you really trust either team in the rebound spot? Golden State opened as a nine-point favorite and it?s burned bettors recently with a 1-7 ATS skid and despite owning a 15-4 record at home, they?ve only covered eight (8-11 ATS) of those victories. Over the past few seasons, backing Golden State off a loss was a great money-maker but they?re just 4-7 ATS after a setback in 2018.

The book is out on Portland, who is great at home (13-5 SU, 11-7 ATS) and weak on the road (6-10 SU, 5-11 ATS) and lately they?ve been awful away from the Moda Center. Including the loss on Tuesday at Utah, the Trail Blazers have gone 1-7 both SU and ATS in their last eight road games and the losses came by an average of 18.7 PPG. Among teams with a winning record, Portland has the lowest point differential (+0.1) in the league.

The two clubs just met at Oracle Arena on Nov. 23 and Golden State throttled Portland 125-97 as a one-point home favorite. The line was short for this matchup because the Warriors didn?t have Stephen Curry in the lineup and it was mired in a four-game losing skid. Including that setback, the Trail Blazers have dropped 13 straight games in the Bay Area and they haven?t been great for bettors (4-9 ATS) during this span either. Golden State will travel to Portland on Saturday night and it has dropped its last two trips to Oregon.

Philadelphia (22-13 SU, 16-19 ATS) at Utah (17-18 SU, 17-17-1 ATS)

The late-night portion of the TNT double-header (10:35 p.m. ET) takes place from Salt Lake City and it?s a nice matchup. The Jazz opened as a five-point home favorite and they?ve won and covered three of their last four games.

We?re starting to see the Utah defense finally take shape and the club is allowing 96.8 PPG in its last seven games, which has led to a 7-0 ?under? mark. Make a note that the Jazz have faced some quality opponents during this stretch, which includes the Rockets, Warriors, Thunder and Blazers twice.

Philadelphia is definitely considered in that class but bettors backing them are probably still pissed that the 76ers couldn?t cover in their 121-114 overtime loss at Boston on Christmas as a five-point road underdog. With that loss, the 76ers dropped to 7-9 against teams with winning records and they?re now 4-7 this season as underdogs. Keep in mind that Philadelphia has never covered a game as an underdog that it hasn?t won so the money-line (+184) could be a better option tonight.

Also, confidence should be high for the club knowing that the 76ers have won and covered their last three meetings against the Jazz, which includes a 113-107 win on Nov. 16 as a 2 ?-point home favorite. Lastly, Philadelphia has gone 5-2 versus the Western Conference this season however all five wins came at home and the losses were on the road. Utah has gone 2-2 at home versus clubs from the East this season.

Harden scores 45, Rockets beat Celtics 127-113
December 27, 2018
By The Associated Press

HOUSTON (AP) James Harden had 45 points and six assists, Clint Capela added 24 points and 18 rebounds, and the Houston Rockets beat the Boston Celtics 127-113 on Thursday night for their eighth win in nine games.

Harden, who was playing on a bruised left calf, had 17 points in the first quarter and finished 11 of 26 from the field, including 9 of 18 on 3-pointers. Eric Gordon scored 20 points for Houston, which shot 48 percent while improving to a season-high four games above .500. Houston finished 18 of 45 on 3-pointers.

Harden has scored at least 30 points in eight straight games, the longest such streak since Russell Westbrook had eight straight 30-point games in November 2016. Harden has scored at least 35 points in six straight games, the longest streak since Carmelo Anthony had six straight in April 2013.

Kyrie Irving had 23 points and 11 assists, Marcus Morris added 19 points before being ejected midway through the fourth quarter, and Jaylen Brown had 18 points off the bench for Boston, which shot 47 percent but was outrebounded 54-38.

KINGS 117, LAKERS 116

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Bogdan Bogdanovic made a 3-pointer at the buzzer and Sacramento rallied from 15 points down in the fourth quarter to beat Los Angeles in the Lakers' first game this season without LeBron James.

Bogdanovic finished with 23 points and De'Aaron Fox added 15 points, 12 assists and nine rebounds. Willie Cauley-Stein had 19 points and eight rebounds, while Iman Shumpert scored 18 points and matched his career high with six 3s.

James was held out with a groin injury, ending his consecutive games played streak at 156. The four-time MVP was injured during the Lakers' 127-101 victory over two-time defending NBA champion Golden State on Christmas when he slipped while going for a loose ball.

Kyle Kuzma had 34 points to help make up for James' absence, and Lonzo Ball added 20 points, 12 assists and nine rebounds. But the Lakers struggled down the stretch and lost their fourth in six games.

TRAIL BLAZERS 110, WARRIORS 109, OT

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Damian Lillard hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 6.3 seconds left in overtime and scored 21 points in his final regular-season game at home in Oakland, sending Portland past Golden State in a wild one.

Kevin Durant missed a 13-footer off the front rim as the final buzzer sounded but finished with his second triple-double of the season: 26 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds.

Jusuf Nurkic had 27 points and 12 rebounds for the Blazers.

Durant hit a tying 3-pointer with 19 seconds left in regulation following a driving one-handed dunk the previous possession but the Warriors couldn't overcome a comedy of errors in losing a second straight at home. They took a 127-101 beating from the Lakers on Christmas night.

76ERS 114, JAZZ 97

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - JJ Redick scored 24 points and Joel Embiid had 23 points, 15 rebounds and five blocks to help Philadelphia cruise past Utah.

Ben Simmons, who was selected over Utah's Donovan Mitchell as Rookie of the Year last season, had his fifth triple-double of the season with 13 points, 14 rebounds and 12 assists.

Mitchell scored 23 points, Dante Exum added a season-high 20 and Rudy Gobert had 17 points and 15 rebounds for the Jazz.

Embiid, who has a league-leading 31 double-doubles, and Gobert both had bright moments in the post but the Jazz let Redick get loose for six 3-pointers. Jimmy Butler was also effective on the perimeter and drives for dunks as he scored 19 points.

BUCKS 112, KNICKS 96

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Giannis Antetokounmpo had 31 points and 14 rebounds, Khris Middleton added 25 points and Milwaukee beat New York for its sixth win in seven games.

The Bucks swept the home-and-home series, having won at New York 109-95 on Christmas.

Luke Kornet, making his first start of the season in place of Enes Kanter, tied a career high with 23 points, and Noah Vonleh added 15 points and 13 rebounds for the Knicks. New York, playing without leading scorer Tim Hardaway Jr. because of an illness, lost its sixth straight.

Kanter was ejected with 9:56 left in the fourth quarter after being assessed two technical fouls. Antetokounmpo drove to the basket and was knocked down by Kanter, although no foul was called. The two got into a brief altercation as Antetokounmpo ran back up the court. Each player was called for a technical, then Kanter was called for a second.

?I?ve always felt I could play in the NFL. I?m a confident guy. There?s not a lot of short quarterbacks in the league, but I think there?s more guys paving the way for the transition of not really caring about how big you are, how tall you are. I?ve played this game my whole life and I?ve always felt I could do it.?

Friday?s List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here??.

13) How is it that Duke hasn?t won an ACC regular season basketball title since 2010, and they tied with Virginia that year? Last time Duke won regular season title by itself was 2006.

12) There are 80 offensive linemen in NFL on IR or PUP; Cardinals/Redskins have seven each, followed by Jacksonville with six. Staying healthy is a big part of winning games.

11) Baltimore Ravens? safety Eric Weddle made the Pro Bowl, so if Baltimore makes it to the playoffs, Weddle cashes in on a $1M incentive he gets for a Pro Bowl/playoff quinella.

10) DH Nelson Cruz signed a one-year deal with the Minnesota Twins. Cruz has homered 203 times the last five years, more than anyone else in the majors.

9) Duke 56, Temple 27? Owls led this game 20-7 early, 27-21 at the half, then the roof fell in. Duke scored on seven straight possessions, plus added a defensive TD during that run. Been a rough bowl season for the AAC.

From 1940-2011, Duke went to seven bowl games; they?ve been to six bowls the last seven years. It is way easier now to go to a bowl than long time ago, but David Cutcliffe has done a great job with the Blue Devils.

8) Old Dominion?s QB Blake LaRussa threw for 495 yards in an upset of Virginia this season, but is leaving ODU and skipping his senior year of football in order to enroll in seminary school.

7) Nevada sportsbooks won a net $27.1M in November, including $18.4M from football, both NFL and college.

Total of $581.1M was wagered in Nevada sportsbooks in November, compared to $527.9M in November, 2017.

6) From Saturday-Tuesday, CG Technology sportsbooks will be offering -108 on all football wagers. This includes: Cosmopolitan, Venetian, Palazzo, MResort, Palms, Venetian and Hard Rock casinos.

5) Right now, no NBA teams are on pace to win 60+ games this season; last time there was an NBA season with no 60-win teams was 2000-01.

4) Jets TE Eric Tomlinson went on IR because he needed surgery on his foot after he dropped a weight on the foot in the weight room Wednesday afternoon.

3) Alabama?s starting left guard Deonte Brown is suspended for the Oklahoma game this week, and maybe beyond that, if the Crimson Tide advances. Bad news for Alabama?s OL.

2) Wisconsin 35, Miami 3? This score won?t go over well in south Florida. Total yardage was 406-169, Badgers, and it wasn?t that cold in the Bronx.

1) Wouldn?t want to be a policeman in Las Vegas; there are no quiet days here. Lot of places, there are plenty of days where not too much happens, but I?ve heard sirens here all week and at all hours of day/night. Every night here has a little bit of New Year?s Eve in it.

Friday's Tip Sheet
Kevin Rogers

Game of the Night: Spurs at Nuggets ? 9:05 PM EST

Three home-and-home sets take place on Friday night (Nets/Hornets and Mavericks/Pelicans the others) as San Antonio looks to defeat Denver for the second time in three nights. The Spurs (19-16 SU, 19-15-1 ATS) knocked off the Nuggets (21-11 SU, 19-13 ATS) for the 12th consecutive time at home dating back to November 2012 on Wednesday, 111-103.

San Antonio cashed as four-point favorites, led by DeMar DeRozan?s 30 points and a 27-point effort from LaMarcus Aldridge as the Spurs moved to 14-5 at AT&T Center this season. Since losing to the Lakers on December 5 at Staples Center, the Spurs have won and covered eight of their last 10 games, which includes a 7-1 SU/ATS mark at home. Unfortunately, Gregg Popovich?s team has lost four of its past five road contests with the lone victory coming in blowout fashion at Orlando, 129-90 on December 19.

The Nuggets dropped their fourth consecutive contest away from Pepsi Center in Wednesday?s setback at San Antonio, although Denver received a career game from Juancho Hernangomez, who scored 27 points and pulled down 13 rebounds. Unfortunately, Nikola Jokic contributed only four points on 1-of-5 shooting, although the Denver big man dished out 10 assists. The Nuggets will be happy to be back in the Rockies on Friday where they own a 13-3 home mark, including riding a 7-0 SU/ATS stretch the last seven at Pepsi Center.

Round Two ? Charlotte

The Nets held off the Hornets in one of the wildest games of the season on Wednesday, 134-132 in double overtime. Charlotte couldn?t put away Brooklyn late in the fourth quarter or in either overtime as Joe Harris finished off a 27-point night by picking up a loose ball and taking it for the go-ahead layup late in the second overtime. Spencer Dinwiddie continued to solidify his case for Sixth Man of the Year by scoring 37 points off the bench, including hitting seven three-pointers.

Now, the venue shifts to Spectrum Center in Charlotte as the Hornets (16-17 SU, 17-16 ATS) look to keep their hold atop the Southeast division in spite of a losing record. The Hornets have lost four of their last six games, but the two victories came at home in this stretch against the Cavaliers and Pistons. However, Charlotte owns a 1-6 ATS mark in the past seven overall, while failing to cover in four of the last five home matchups with Brooklyn.

The Nets (17-19 SU, 19-17 ATS) improved to 9-1 in their last 10 games with Wednesday?s home triumph, as Brooklyn moved to 9-2 ATS in the past 11 contests overall. A bulk of Brooklyn?s damage has come at Barclays Center in this stretch, but the Nets have won each of their past three road contests, while covering in four of their previous six opportunities as a road underdog.

Round Two ? New Orleans

Although they are the bottom two teams record-wise in the Southwest division this season, the Mavericks and Pelicans are no pushovers. Dallas (16-17 SU, 20-13 ATS) edged New Orleans (15-20 SU, 15-20 ATS) at American Airlines Center on Wednesday, 122-119 to barely cash as two-point favorites and snap a six-game losing streak.

The Mavs picked up revenge for a 26-point loss in the Big Easy earlier this month as Luka Doncic continued a fantastic rookie campaign by scoring 21 points, dishing out 10 assists, and grabbing nine rebounds in the win. Dallas also cashed its sixth consecutive OVER, while hitting the OVER in its past four road contests heading into Smoothie King Center.

The Pelicans were paced by their All-Star Anthony Davis, who posted a 32-point, 18-rebound effort in the loss to finish their road trip at 0-4. New Orleans has lost five consecutive games since knocking off Oklahoma City as a home underdog on December 12, as the Pelicans start their final homestand of 2018 with matchups against the Rockets and Wolves coming up prior to the New Year.

Staples Showdown

The Lakers and Clippers hook up for the first of four meetings this season after the Clips grabbed three matchups last season. LeBron James will sit out his second consecutive game for the Lakers (20-15 SU, 15-19-1 ATS) with a groin strain, as Los Angeles plays with no rest following Thursday?s buzzer-beating loss at Sacramento.

The Lakers are considering the home team this evening as they begin a four-game homestand, which includes a revenge spot against the Kings on Sunday. Without James last night, the Lakers fell into a 12-point hole in the first quarter, but turned things around to grab a 15-point advantage with under seven minutes remaining in regulation. However, Sacramento outscored Los Angeles, 28-12 in the final 6:30 minutes to stun the Lakers, who were led by Kyle Kuzma?s 33 points and nine rebounds.

The Clippers (20-14 SU, 20-14 ATS) also faced the Kings in their last game on Wednesday, holding off Sacramento at Staples, 127-118 to win for the third time in four games. L.A. has covered in all four of these contests, while riding a five-game OVER streak as Lou Williams and Montrezl Harrell combined for 46 points off the bench. Although the Clippers aren?t leaving town for this contest, they are 2-5 in their seven road games in December.

Rising Suns

Who would have thought that two of the hottest ATS teams currently are on the Nets and Suns? We told you about Brooklyn?s recent success earlier, but Phoenix (9-26 SU, 16-19 ATS) has covered the spread in seven consecutive games. The Suns not only cashed in its last two home wins as an underdog against Dallas and Minnesota, but took home the money in all five games on their recent road trip, including in a 122-120 overtime triumph at Orlando on Wednesday as five-point ?dogs.

The Suns welcome in the Thunder (21-12 SU, 18-15 ATS), who are coming off a pair of close defeats to the Wolves and Rockets. OKC was in control early against Houston on Christmas day, but the Thunder crashed in the second half by getting outscored, 61-49 in a 113-109 setback. Paul George paced OKC with 28 points, while Russell Westbrook scored 20 points on 6-of-20 shooting as the Thunder have lost four of their last six on the road.

Oklahoma City has had its way with Phoenix this season by capturing the first two meetings, each by double-digits. The Thunder are riding a five-game winning streak against the Suns since March 2018 as all five victories have come by eight points or more.

Davis scores 48, Pelicans edge Doncic, Mavs 114-112
December 28, 2018
By The Associated Press

NEW ORLEANS (AP) Anthony Davis hit a go-ahead, fall-away jumper with 43.9 seconds left and scored a season-high 48 points to outduel rookie Luka Doncic and lift the New Orleans Pelicans over the Dallas Mavericks 114-112 on Friday night.

Davis was fouled on the shot and made the free throw for a two-point lead. Dallas got two more possessions, but Doncic had a layup blocked by Jrue Holiday, Dennis Smith Jr. missed a 3-pointer and the Mavericks couldn't get off a shot on a final possession with four seconds left.

Davis also grabbed 17 rebounds and New Orleans snapped a five-game skid. The Pelicans dominated in the paint, scoring 70 points, including 22 from Julius Randle.

Doncic scored 34 points and hit 7 of 10 3-pointers, and Harrison Barnes had 21 points.

MAGIC 116, RAPTORS 87

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) - Nikola Vucevic had 30 points and 20 rebounds and Orlando snapped a four-game losing streak with a rout of Toronto.

D.J. Augustin had 17 points and six assists for Orlando, which had five players in double figures and a 60-41 rebounding advantage.

The Magic, who had lost five straight to Toronto, outscored the Raptors 51-16 over a 16-minute span of the middle periods and led by as many as 31 points late in the third quarter.

Kawhi Leonard scored 21 points for the Raptors, who shot 29.5 percent in the final game of a three-game trip. Serge Ibaka added 17 points and eight rebounds.

BULLS 101, WIZARDS 92

WASHINGTON (AP) - Zach LaVine scored 24 points, including 11 straight in the third quarter, as Chicago defeated Washington.

Wendell Carter, Jr. had 17 points and 13 rebounds, and Lauri Markkanen added 14 points and 14 rebounds for the Bulls.

Bradley Beal led Washington with 34 points.

The Wizards played without John Wall, who was sidelined with a sore left heel. Washington coach Scott Brooks said that he found out during the morning shootaround that Wall would be unable to play, and said he would see a specialist.

Jordan Clarkson had 18 points for the Cavaliers, who have lost five straight.

It was the 15th consecutive home win for Miami over Cleveland. The Cavs' last win in Miami was Jan. 25, 2010 - a game where LeBron James and Shaquille O'Neal both started for Cleveland. The last time the Cavs won in Miami without LeBron James was Dec. 21, 2001.

The Pacers capped a slow opening quarter with a strong finish, leading Detroit 32-21 at the end of the period. Indiana worked with a double-digit lead for the rest of the game and led by 37 during the fourth quarter.

Detroit's two big men had quiet nights by their standards. Blake Griffin had 18 points and six rebounds, and Andre Drummond had 12 points and 12 rebounds.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Kent Bazemore scored 23 points, John Collins added 21 and Atlanta blew a big lead but outlasted Minnesota in overtime.

Saturday?s 6-pack

? Washington State 28, Iowa State 26? Cyclones failed on 2-point play to tie game with 4:02 left. Wazzu killed off rest of the clock after that.

? Syracuse 34, Wast Virginia 18? First 10-win season for Orange since 2001

? Nuggets 102, Spurs 99? Denver is very quietly a 22-11 team.

? Auburn 63, Purdue 14? This game was 56-7 at the half; thank God I was on an airplane and didn?t see it.

? Four of last six Heisman Trophy winners played on the national title team.

? Someone at MGM in Las Vegas wagered $525,000 on Alabama on the money line in tonite?s semi-final; if the Crimson Tide wins, the guy makes $95,000.

Quote of the Day

?Our football?s team performance tonight- and at other times this season- is simply unacceptable to all of is who love the U. I am committed to getting UM football back to national prominence and that process is underway???
Miami athletic director Blake James
