Monday's Tip Sheet
Kevin Rogers

Game of the Night: Mavericks at Thunder ? 8:05 PM EST

The contrasting home and road records for Dallas (17-18 SU, 22-13 ATS) is astonishing through two months. The Mavericks own a terrific 15-3 record at American Airlines Center, but have lost 15 of 17 contests away from Big ?D.? Two of those home victories came against Oklahoma City, including a 105-103 triumph on Sunday as 2 ?-point underdogs.

Dallas built an 11-point lead heading into the fourth quarter, but Oklahoma City rallied back with a 24-11 run to grab a 101-95 advantage with two minutes remaining. The Thunder crashed in the final two minutes by getting outscored, 10-2, even though Dallas converted only two field goals. Russell Westbrook put together one of his worst offensive games of the season by going 4-of-22 from the floor, including failing to hit a three-pointer in eight attempts, while scoring nine points.

The Thunder (22-13 SU, 19-16 ATS) wrapped up their three-game road swing at 1-2 SU/ATS, while falling to 4-8 ATS the past 12 opportunities in the favorite role. Oklahoma City returns home for only one game prior to a two-game road swing to face the Lakers on Wednesday and Blazers on Friday. The Mavericks embark on a four-game trip looking to extend its ATS hot streak to six games, but Dallas owns an 0-7 road record in December.

Dialing It Up

The Celtics and Spurs hook up for the first time this season as both squads are coming off road victories. Boston (21-14 SU, 18-17 ATS) rallied from a 17-point deficit to stun Memphis on Saturday, 112-103, as the Celtics outscored the Grizzlies, 55-37 in the second half. Kyrie Irving paced the Celtics with 26 points and 13 assists as Boston cashed the OVER for the fifth straight game and the eighth time in nine contests.

San Antonio (20-17 SU, 21-15-1 ATS) starts a three-game homestand where the Spurs have been nearly automatic over the last month. The Spurs have won eight of their past nine games at AT&T Center, while covering 10 of their past 12 overall, including in Saturday?s 122-111 triumph over the Clippers as three-point underdogs.

The Spurs have won six consecutive home matchups with the Celtics dating back to 2012, while two of the last three meetings in San Antonio have been decided by three points.

Elsewhere in the Lone Star State

Things can change quickly in a month as Memphis was sitting atop the Southwest division, while Houston was hanging out at the bottom following a slow start. The Rockets (20-15 SU, 17-17-1 ATS) are back atop the Southwest after winning nine of its past 10 games since a three-game slide, while holding off the Pelicans on Saturday, 108-104 to cash as 3 ?-point favorites. Houston looks to wrap up December with a perfect 9-0 record at Toyota Center, which includes recent victories over San Antonio, Oklahoma City, and Boston.

The Grizzlies (18-17 SU, 17-18 ATS) have dropped eight of their last 11 contests, which includes four defeats at FedEx Forum. Memphis threw away a big lead in Saturday?s setback to Boston, but the Grizzlies eclipsed the 100-point mark for only the second time in the past 11 games. The Grizzlies have dropped three consecutive meetings with the Rockets since last season, including a 105-97 defeat to Houston at FedEx Forum in mid-December.

Not So Easy

Since starting 10-7, the Pelicans (16-21 SU, 15-22 ATS) own a dreadful 6-14 record in the last 20 games, while mired in a 1-6 SU/ATS slump the past seven contests. The previous three losses for New Orleans have come by five points or less, including Saturday?s four-point defeat to Houston. The Pelicans have covered once at Smoothie King Center in the favorite role since the start of December, while posting a 1-4 ATS record in the last five opportunities as home chalk.

New Orleans welcomes in Minnesota (17-19 SU, 19-17 ATS) for the final home game of 2018, looking to avenge a 108-100 defeat at Target Center on November 14. The Wolves have rolled on the road recently by capturing three straight on the highway, including Sunday?s 113-104 triumph at Miami as four-point underdogs. Minnesota is playing with no rest for the fourth time this season, owning a 1-2 SU/ATS record in this role, while the Wolves have cashed seven consecutive OVERS since December 17.

Strive for 25

The Warriors (24-13 SU, 15-22 ATS) are seeking to become the first Western Conference team to reach 25 victories on the season with a win at Phoenix tonight. Golden State bounced back from an overtime loss to Portland to beat the Blazers on the second end of a back-to-back on Saturday, 115-105. The Warriors grabbed only their second cover in the last 10 games as the trio of Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Kevin Durant all topped the 25-point mark.

The Suns (9-28 SU, 17-20 ATS) rallied late to pick up a miracle cover against the Nuggets on Saturday in a 122-118 defeat as 4 ?-point underdogs. In spite of the loss, Phoenix improved to 8-1 ATS the last nine games, while grabbing its fourth cover in the past five home contests. The Suns have dropped 16 consecutive meetings with the Warriors since 2015, as Golden State has cashed in six of the past seven matchups.

Playing each other two nights in a row

The Mavericks have cooled down after their hot start, but have won two of their most recent three games. The Mavs once again play the Thunder, who have lost three of their most recent four and will be hoping to get revenge for their 105-103 loss to Dallas last night.

Oklahoma City has only won one of its most recent five contests when playing Dallas, and has failed to cover in five straight versus the Mavs. The Mavericks have covered in 15 of the most recent 22 games in the head-to-head, and should be able to keep it close on the road. Take the 8-points and back the Mavericks to cover.

Building off a buzzer-beater

The Hornets have struggled defending opposing shooting guards this season allowing 23 points, 5.9 rebounds, 4.7 assists and a league high 3.4 made 3-point shots per game.
Today Charlotte matches up with Orlando's Evan Fournier who is coming off hitting a buzzer-beating shot to secure a Magic victory last night. Back Fournier Over his points, rebounds, assists total Over 23.5.

Taking advantage of missed shots

The Grizzlies and Rockets matchup projects to be very low scoring with both teams allowing less than 109 points on average per game. This could lead to a lot of missed shots and opportunities for rebounding.

The Grizzlies are allowing 53.6 rebounds per game, and surrendering an average of 16.1 to opposing centers. This is great news for Rockets center Clint Capela who has logged 19 or more rebounds in three of his team's most recent four games. Back his rebounding total Over.

Another rebounding prop

Another player in a favorable rebounding matchup today is Spurs big man LaMarcus Aldridge who is averaging 9.0 rebounds a game, and is facing off against a Celtics team allowing an average of 11.5 to opposing power forwards.

Boston has posted a 0-5 record against the Spurs in their most recent five games at AT&T Center. Over their most recent 10 matchups, the Spurs have held the Celtics to 43 percent shooting. Look for good defense to be played on both ends of the court and back Aldridge Over his rebounding total of 8.5

Loving that Cajun home cooking

The Pelicans have lost six of their most recent seven games, but finally return home to New Orleans to host the Timberwolves. The Pels have posted a 12-6 record on their home court, while averaging 118.8 points per game on 48 percent shooting.

The Timberwolves have struggled scoring points away from home averaging only 108.8 away on 44.1 percent shooting. They will be playing on the second night of a back-to-back and have not fared well - only winning one of three games - when playing on consecutive nights. Look for the Pelicans to pull away late as fatigue may be a factor late for the T-Wolves. Back New Orleans to cover as 5.5-point favorites.

Games to Watch - Week 12
YouWager

With the 2018-19 NBA regular season set to turn the page on the 2018 calendar year, the four expert NBA picks that you?re about to get could help you cash in not once, twice or even three times, but a whopping four times in all!

With that thought in mind, let?s get started with all the games.

Boston Celtics (21-14) at San Antonio Spurs (20-17)
When: Monday, December 31, 2018 at 7:00 PM ET
Where: AT&T Center, San Antonio, Texas

Boston has won three of four after losing their previous three games and the C?s will enter this matchup coming off a 112-103 win over Memphis on Saturday. San Antonio has won two of its last three games including a 122-111 win over the Clippers on Saturday.

While Boston has largely underachieved after entering the 2018-19 season as the prohibitive favorites to win the Eastern Conference, the Spurs are playing right around the level of basketball we expected coming into this season

Having said all of this, I?m going to encourage you to back the semi-desperate Celtics to win and narrowly cover the chalk as a slight road favorite. Boston has the statistical edge at both ends of the court and they?re clearly a deeper, more balanced team than San Antonio which relies on the likes of LaMarcus Aldridge and DeMar DeRozan to provide the bulk of their scoring.

Kyrie Irving has been playing out of his mind lately and the Celtics have gone 8-2 ATS in their last 10 games following a straight up win and a bankroll-boosting 11-4 ATS in their last 15 games overall. While San Antonio has gone 7-2 ATS in the last nine meetings, the road team in this Inter-Conference clash has gone 14-5-1 ATS in the last 20 meetings. Again, Boston is semi-desperate to start playing well and they?re the much deeper team in this contest.

Predicted Score:
Celtics 112 Spurs 106

Utah Jazz (18-19) at Toronto Raptors (27-11)
When: Tuesday, January 1, 2019 at 7:30 PM ET
Where: Scotiabank Arena, Toronto, Ontario

Utah has won two of its last three games including an emphatic 129-97 blowout over the Knicks on Saturday. Toronto has also won two of its last three games including a 95-89 win over Chicago on Sunday night.

For this Tuesday night matchup, I?m going to advise you to back Toronto to get the outright win by a half-dozen points. The Raptors average almost six points per game more than the Jazz while allowing just a bucket per game more defensively. Utah is an uninspiring 9-10 on the road this season while Toronto has gone an impressive 14-4 on their home floor. Toronto also spanked Utah 124-111 at home back on Nov. 5 ? without superstar forward Kawhi Leonard on the floor that night.

Utah is just 1-4-1 ATS in their last 6 road games, 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games vs. a team with a winning percentage above .600 and 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games following a straight up win of more than 10 points. Toronto has gone a near-perfect 10-1 ATS in the last 11 meetings and I like them to improve on that mark by getting the win in this one.

Predicted Score:
Toronto 112 Utah 106

Minnesota Timberwolves (17-19) at Boston Celtics (21-14)
When: Wednesday, January 2, 2018 at 8:00 PM ET
Where: TD Garden, Boston, MA

Minnesota has won three of its last four games and heads into their Monday night matchup against New Orleans coming off a solid 113-104 win over Miami on Sunday. As I mentioned previously, Boston has won three of four heading into their Monday night matchup against San Antonio including their 112-103 win over Memphis on Saturday.

While the Timberwolves have been playing solid basketball recently, I believe it?s mostly fool?s gold with Minnesota beating up on mediocre Chicago and Miami over their last three games.

Minnesota is just 8-10 on the road this season while Boston has gone 11-5 at home. The Timberwolves have a pair of gifted scorers in Karl Anthony Towns and Andrew Wiggins, but that?s about it as far as offensive firepower. Boston is the deeper team and they have the best coach in the league and that?s why they?ll take out underachieving Minnesota in this one.

Predicted Score:
Boston 114 Minnesota 105

Oklahoma City Thunder (22-13) at Los Angeles Lakers (21-16)
When: Wednesday, January 2, 2018 at 10:30 PM ET
Where: Staples Center, Los Angeles, CA

Oklahoma City has won five of their last 10 games, but fell to Dallas 105-103 on Sunday to fall to 1-3 over their last four games. Paul George scored a team-high 36 points, but Russell Westbrook was limited to a paltry nine points on a pitiful 4-of-22 shooting night.

Los Angeles has won just four of their last 10 games, but the Lakers managed to snap a two-game skid by beating Sacramento 121-114 on Sunday night as Kentavious Caldwell-Pope scored a team-high 26 points off the bench and Josh Hart added 22 points and Brandon Ingram, 21 points.

For this mid-week matchup, I?m going to advise you to back Oklahoma City to get the win for one huge reason. Russell Westbrook is definitely going to come out looking to dominate after his seriously sub-par performance the last time out. While Los Angeles has a slight edge in the scoring department, Oklahoma City is, by far, the better defensive team in this pairing and it?s not even close.
The Thunder win this one by at least a half-dozen points.

Predicted Score:
Oklahoma City 117 LA Lakers 110

Harden has triple-double in Rockets' win
December 31, 2018
By The Associated Press

HOUSTON (AP) James Harden had 43 points, 10 rebounds and 13 assists in his fourth straight 40-point game, leading the Houston Rockets over the Memphis Grizzlies 113-101 on Monday night for their fifth consecutive victory.

Harden set an NBA record with his eighth straight game with at least 35 points and five assists, besting Oscar Robertson, who twice had seven-game streaks. Harden finished with his fourth triple-double this season and 39th overall.

Houston has won 10 of its last 11 to improve to 21-15.

Harden continued his incredible run that has powered Houston's surge up the Western Conference standings after a slow start, making six 3-pointers and 21 of 27 free throws. He has made at least four 3-pointers in eight straight games has finished with 30 points or more in 10 games in a row.

Kyle Anderson had 20 points and Mike Conley added 19 for the Grizzlies, who lost for the seventh time in nine games.

SPURS 120, CELTICS 111

SAN ANTONIO (AP) - LaMarcus Aldridge scored 32 points and San Antonio rode a 46-point third quarter to a victory over Boston.

Derrick White had a career-high 22 points for San Antonio, which has won 11 of 13 to close within four games of the top spot in the Western Conference.

The Spurs made 19 of 25 shots (76 percent) in the third quarter, their highest-scoring period since 1993 and the 12th-highest in franchise history.

Jaylen Brown had a season-high 30 points, but Boston was unable to maintain its first-half advantage.

WARRIORS 132, SUNS 109

PHOENIX (AP) - Stephen Curry scored 34 points and Kevin Durant added 25, leading Golden State over Phoenix.

The Warriors beat the Suns for the 17th straight time, including eight in a row in Phoenix.

Golden State was 14 for 28 on 3-pointers, with Curry going 5 of 9.

Deandre Ayton had 25 points and 10 rebounds for the Suns, who have lost five of six. T.J Warren added 24 points and Devin Booker 20.

HORNETS 125, MAGIC 100

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Kemba Walker scored 24 points in just 27 minutes, and Charlotte beat Orlando for the 13th straight time.

Walker had 20 points on 8-of-11 shooting in the first half and did not play in the fourth quarter. Malik Monk added 21 points as the Hornets put six players in double figures in the easy victory over the Magic and Steve Clifford, who coached Charlotte for five seasons.

Aaron Gordon scored 14 points and Nikola Vucevic had 12, but he did not play after leaving the court with a knee injury late in the third quarter. Mo Bamba had 12 rebounds in 18 minutes for the Magic, who opened a six-game trip by having a two-game winning streak snapped.

PACERS 116, HAWKS 108

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Victor Oladipo scored 22 points while Domantas Sabonis and Myles Turner each added 20 to lead Indiana past Atlanta.

Indiana has won five straight and 12 of 14 to became the third team in the league with 25 wins this season.

John Collins finished with 22 points and 16 rebounds to lead Atlanta. Rookie Kevin Huerter scored 22 points and made six 3-pointers, both season highs, as the Hawks lost for the second time in seven games - both to the Pacers in the last week.

PELICANS 123, TIMBERWOLVES 114

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Julius Randle had 33 points and 11 rebounds, Darius Miller scored 13 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter, and New Orleans overcame Anthony Davis' absence.

Miller hits five 3s, his last from the left wing to put the Pelicans up 115-109 with 1:12 to go.

Jrue Holiday had 26 points and E'Twaun Moore scored 17 for the Pelicans, who found out shortly before tip-off that Davis was too ill to play.

Karl-Anthony Towns finished with 28 points and 17 rebounds scoring 10 of his points during a tight fourth quarter before fouling out with 12.5 seconds left.

THUNDER 122, MAVERICKS 102

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Russell Westbrook had 32 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists, and Oklahoma City gained a split of its back-to-back against Dallas.

Paul George added 22 points and Jerami Grant had 16 for the Thunder, who had dropped three of their last four games. That included a 105-103 loss at Dallas on Sunday, when Oklahoma City blew a six-point lead in the final 1:59 and Westbrook went 4 of 22 from the field and scored only nine points.

Dallas committed 29 turnovers, the most ever by a Thunder opponent.

Harrison Barnes led Dallas with 25 points, matching his career high with seven 3-pointers in nine attempts, and Luca Doncic had 17 points. The Mavericks are 2-16 on the road, offsetting their 15-3 home record.

Tuesday?s List of 13; Happy New Year, everyone!!!!

13) This is the first NFL season ever where no team finished 8-8; NFL went to the 16-game schedule in 1978, with two seasons since then shortened by work stoppages.

12) Eight NFL head coaches were fired Sunday/Monday, 25% of the league?s coaches.

11) Steelers? star WR Antonio Brown missed Sunday?s game with the Bengals, but apparently he wasn?t hurt, he was being disciplined after an incident in practice with a teammate, who was Ben Rothlisberger. Witnesses say it was a fairly ugly incident.

Sounds like it was an unhappy year in Pittsburgh, with Le?Veon Bell?s holdout and the coach screwing up game management situations and now Brown at odds with teammates. Throw in the defensive coordinator not knowing that Bengals? TE Tyler Eifurt was hurt back in October, and it wouldn?t be surprising if whole lot of people were let go Monday, but they weren?t.

10) Oakland Raiders hired NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock as its GM; Mayock has been contributing to NFL Network and NFL.com since 2004, mostly in scouting, but he?s never worked in an NFL front office before.

Raiders have three first round draft picks in April and $100M in cap room to work with.

9) UCLA?s basketball team is 7-6 and has lost its last four games, which cost Steve Alford his job Monday. Bruins lost at home to Belmont, Liberty- those teams are both ranked in the top 80, but the coaching change was made, even before conference play begins. Our society isn?t terribly patient. Alford is a good guy; not sure why a move had to be made right now.

Alford/UCLA never seemed like a great match; will be fascinating to see where Bruins set their sights for a new coach. Murry Bartow is the interim coach; his father Gene was the coach who replaced John Wooden at UCLA, and who later started UAB?s basketball program.

Would Billy Donovan have any interest in the UCLA job? I?d have to ask, if I?m UCLA.

8) Mark Richt was fired as football coach at Miami; official word was ?retired?, but guys don?t quit jobs like that. Richt is 58, would be curious to hear him on TV, hopefully learn from him.

Houston fired coach Major Applewhite; Dana Holgorsen has been mentioned as a potential target for the Cougars, but how is Houston a better job than West Virginia? Kliff Kingsbury has apparently turned down ?a lucrative offer? from Houston to stay on as an assistant at USC.

7) Manny Diaz left as DC at Miami to become head coach at Temple, but when Richt retired (or was fired), Diaz quickly bolted Temple and is now the head coach at Miami. Oy.

6) Ole Miss signed former Michigan/Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez as its new OC, joining former Colorado coach Mike MacIntyre as its new DC, giving the Rebels an impressive staff around relatively inexperienced head coach Matt Luke.

6) This from the Grand Forks Herald:

Dan Shrader is a 38-year old full-time sanitation worker in the Minneapolis/St Paul area, who spends 50 hours a week driving a daily garbage route, dumping trash at the landfill and helping manage a 32-truck fleet.

He never played in the NHL, he never played college or pro hockey, he never played organized hockey growing up, period, but he is an amateur scout for the Winnipeg Jets, in charge of watching the Minnesota region for prospects. Pretty good second job for a garbageman.

If you like something a lot and work hard enough at it, all things are possible.

5) Hartford 79, Boston College 78 OT? ACC teams shouldn?t lose to America East teams.

4) City of Toronto had free bus/subway service from 7pm-7am New Year?s Eve, which is really good. More cities should do that; the less people who drive on New Year?s Eve, the better.

3) Stanford 14, Pittsburgh 13? Condoleeza Rice was on the Stanford sidelines for this game; not sure if she was auditioning for a coaching job or not. Pitt finishes year 7-7; always wondered if kids like enjoy going to El Paso for a bowl- seems like an unusual place for a bowl.

2) Oregon 7, Michigan State 6? In its last four games, Michigan State scored 6-6-14-6 points. That not good. Before Monday, last time they completed more than half their passes was October 27.

Mario Cristobal gets a bowl win in his first year at Oregon; it was Ducks? first bowl wins since 2014, in a season when they had their third HC in last three years.

1) Hope you guys out there all have a Happy New Year; thanks for reading. I?m hoping that 2019 will be a year when we all get along better and tolerate each other?s opinions more. Our diversity is part of what makes this country unique, in a good way.

Leonard scores 45, Raptors beat Jazz
January 1, 2019
By The Associated Press

TORONTO (AP) Kawhi Leonard scored a career-high 45 points, Pascal Siakam had a career-best 28 points with 10 rebounds, and the Toronto Raptors beat the Utah Jazz 122-116 on Tuesday night.

Norman Powell scored a season-high 14 points, and the Raptors won their fourth straight at home.

Jae Crowder scored a career-high 30 points, Derrick Favors had 21 and Donovan Mitchell scored 19 as the Jazz dropped to 10-12 on the road and 18-20 overall.

Utah's Rudy Gobert scored 16 points, and Ricky Rubio had 14.

Leonard made all seven of his field-goal attempts in the third quarter and added five foul shots. His 19 points were the second most in any quarter by a Raptors player this season. Serge Ibaka scored 20 points in the first quarter of a Nov. 4 road win against the Los Angeles Lakers.

Leonard shot 16 for 22 overall, missing all three attempts from 3-point range. He went 13 for 17 at the free-throw line.

BUCKS 121, PISTONS 98

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Brook Lopez had 25 points, Giannis Antetokounmpo threw down a spectacular one-handed dunk and Milwaukee cruised past Detroit.

Khris Middleton had 22 points and Eric Bledsoe had 18 for Milwaukee. Antetokounmpo had just 15 points, but his slam over Jon Leuer was the highlight of the night. Antetokounmpo blew past Andre Drummond, jumped and reached his right arm over a leaping Leuer for the slam during the first quarter.

Milwaukee has won four straight and eight of nine. The Bucks are an NBA-best 26-10.

Blake Griffin had 29 points and nine rebounds, and Reggie Jackson scored 19 points for Detroit, which fell to 16-19.

NUGGETS 115, KNICKS 108

DENVER (AP) - Nikola Jokic had 19 points, 14 rebounds and 15 assists, including a late no-look pass to wrap things up, as Denver picked up its ninth straight home victory.

Reserve Malik Beasley added a career-high 23 points for the Western Conference-leading Nuggets, who have now knocked off the Knicks 11 straight times at the Pepsi Center. It was far from easy, though, with the Nuggets needing a big 3-pointer from Jokic with 2:55 remaining to finally gain some separation. The struggling Knicks have lost eight in a row.

Luke Kornet led the Knicks with 19 points, while reserve Enes Kanter scored 17 points and grabbed 12 points. Kanter's recently voiced his displeasure about his role with the Knicks.

TRAIL BLAZERS 113, KINGS 108, OT

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Damian Lillard shook off a sluggish night shooting to score five of his 25 points in overtime, and Portland rallied after blowing a 14-point halftime lead.

Jusuf Nurkic had 24 points and a career-high 23 rebounds to help Portland to its fourth straight win over Sacramento. CJ McCollum added 16 points, and Maurice Harkless had 11 points and nine rebounds.

Buddy Hield scored 27 points for Sacramento. Nemanja Bjelica added 14 points and 16 rebounds, and Bogdan Bogdanovic had 19 points.

Quote of the Day
?We felt it important to extend and amend Lincoln?s contract at this time as we want him at the University of Oklahoma for a long time. He is a great coach and role model for our student-athletes. His record of success speaks for itself. Lincoln is also the right representative for our university in such a high-profile position. I am proud to work with him and anxious to support him as he takes our program into the future.?
Oklahoma president James Gallogly; lets see the Sooners go 7-5 a couple years in a row and see what a great role model they think Riley is.

Wednesday?s quiz
Who was the only NFL QB to take every offensive snap for his team this season?

Tuesday?s quiz
Shaquille O?Neal played his college basketball at LSU.

Monday?s quiz
Fred Dalton Thompson played a DA on Law and Order for five years, then later ran for the Republican nomination for President in 2008.

*************************

Wednesday?s List of 13: Wrapping up the first day of 2019

13) Forgot to mention this Monday, but NFL gets the Week 17 thing right; every game is a divisional rivalry game, and the most meaningful games are stuffed into the 4:25 window of games, to maximize drama. Makes handicapping more difficult, but so be it.

12) There are rumors going around Las Vegas these days that UNLV is going to have a new basketball coach next year, and that guy is coaching in Greece right now? Rick Pitino.

11) Kentucky 27, Penn State 24? Wildcats win 10+ games in same football season for first time since 1977. Kentucky led 27-7, were outgained 407-297, but hung on for the win- they ran a punt back for a touchdown, the first punt return Penn State allowed for a TD since 2012.

10) Houston snags football coach Dana Holgorsen away from West Virginia, giving him $20M over five years; not often a guy voluntarily leaves a Big X program for an AAC team, but money talks??

9) Of the 12 teams who made NFL playoffs this year, Rams played most games (4-3) against them this season. Bears (2-1), Ravens (1-2) played the fewest.

8) Jets could be a good over bet for wins next season; since 2000, here are the Jet head coaches, 1st year and then after??

2000 Al Groh First year: 9-7 Replaced after one year
2001 Herm Edwards: First year: 10-6 Rest of time: 29-35
2006: Eric Mangini: First year: 10-6 Rest of time: 13-19
2008: Rex Ryan: First year: 9-7 Rest of time: 37-43
2015: Todd Bowles: First year: 10-6 Rest of time: 14-34

7) Speaking of the Jets, how does the coach at Iowa Freakin? State turn down an interview with an NFL team? Matt Campbell doesn?t want to coach in the NFL? Fine, but interviewing with an NFL team wouldn?t at least be a good experience for him? I laughed when I saw this note.

6) Agreed that Steve Alford/UCLA was an odd fit, but here is the list of coaches who made 3+ Sweet 16?s in the last five years:
Alford, Beilein, Calipari, Few, Huggins, Krzyzewski, Sean MIller, Self, Williams.

Firing Alford before conference play was insulting, and probably done to placate a big-money donor. Wonder if it?ll hurt them in finding a high-profile replacement.

5) Gambling is difficult: Monday, Weber State (-6.5) won 93-87 at Idaho. Weber was up 41-16 with 5:49 left in first half, led by 22 at the half, but didn?t cover. Idaho made 10-19 3-pointers but covered by only a half-point. Weber was the right side in the game, but not the winning side.

4) Ohio State 28, Washington 23? I wonder if Urban Meyer will ever coach again; hopefully he will never be on TV again, just a totally humorless, serious person who was a great coach but for Pete?s sake, tell a joke or say something sarcastic now and then- its not that hard.

3) LSU 40, Central Florida 32? Tigers? QB Joe Burrow was 21-34 for 394 yards and four TD?s as LSU ended UCF?s 25-game winning streak. Burrow led LSU to a 10-3 record this season; he was the 3rd-string QB at Ohio State before this year. Think about that for a second.

2) Lions fired OC Jim Bob Cooter Tuesday; officially it is a ?mutual parting of ways? which is a nice way of Matt Patricia saying, ?Take a hike!!!!?

Jets/Cardinals need to look at Cooter to help develop their young QB?s.

1) Tuesday is usually garbage day in my neighborhood, but because of New Year?s Day, it got pushed back a day this week. Lot of my neighbors didn?t get the memo and put their garbage out Monday night, and it was really windy Tuesday morning, so the neighborhood was a mess Tuesday morning, lot of stuff everywhere. Not a great way to start 2019.
