Game of the Night: Thunder at Lakers ? 10:35 PM EST

For the first time this season, Oklahoma City and Los Angeles are hooking up. Even though LeBron James is still sidelined due to a groin strain, the Lakers (21-16 SU, 16-20-1 ATS) remain in the top eight of the Western Conference. The Lakers lost their first two games with James sidelined, but rebounded on Sunday night by rallying past the Kings, 121-114 as 1 ?-point favorites. Los Angeles outscored Sacramento, 29-18 in the fourth quarter, while Kentavious Caldwell-Pope pumped in 26 points off the bench for the Lakers.

The Thunder (23-13 SU, 20-16 ATS) rebounded from a two-point setback to the Mavericks on Sunday as OKC routed Dallas on the second end of a back-to-back on Monday, 122-102 as seven-point favorites. OKC jumped out to a 17-point halftime advantage, led by Russell Westbrook?s 32 points, 11 rebounds, and 11 assists on 13-of-24 shooting. Westbrook rebounded from a 4-of-22 shooting effort in Sunday?s loss to produce his 10th triple-double of the season, while the Thunder improved to 13-4 at home.

Last season, the Lakers and Thunder split four matchups, but one win by Los Angeles came with Westbrook out of the lineup for Oklahoma City. The Lakers have dropped four consecutive games off a victory, while cashing the UNDER in nine of the past 11 games at Staples Center. The Thunder have struggled to cover numbers as a road favorite of late by compiling a 2-6 ATS mark as chalk in their last eight games away from Chesapeake Energy Arena.

Over Easy

The two teams that own the longest OVER streaks in the league meet up in Boston. The Timberwolves (17-20 SU, 19-18 ATS) have cashed the OVER in eight consecutive games, while the Celtics (21-15 SU, 18-18 ATS) are riding a six-game OVER streak. Boston won at Minnesota on December 1 as two-point underdogs, 118-109, while the contest easily drilled the OVER of 216 ? thanks to a 66-point fourth quarter.

Minnesota has been one of the weaker road teams in the league at 5-14, but were riding a three-game away hot streak prior to Monday?s 123-114 setback at New Orleans. Granted, the Wolves were playing on a back-to-back following Sunday?s victory at Miami, but Minnesota allowed New Orleans to shoot 52% from the floor without Anthony Davis in the lineup, while the Pelicans drilled 14 three-pointers.

Boston wrapped up a three-game road trip by falling at San Antonio on Monday, 120-111 to finish 1-2 SU/ATS. The Celtics led the Spurs by six points at halftime, but San Antonio outscored Boston, 46-30 in the third quarter to drop their seventh consecutive visit to AT&T Center. Boston has won and covered six of its past seven games in the home favorite role, while posting a 5-0 SU/ATS record in its previous five matchups with Minnesota.

Highway to Hive

The Mavericks (17-19 SU, 22-14 ATS) continue their four-game road trip tonight in Charlotte as Dallas tries to repair a broken 2-16 record away from American Airlines Center. The latest setback came in Monday?s 20-point defeat at Oklahoma City, as Dallas posted an 0-8 road record in December. The loss to the Thunder also snapped a five-game ATS hot streak, which included three highway covers in that stretch.

The Hornets (18-18 SU, 19-17 ATS) have also had road issues this season (4-11), but have thrived at Spectrum Center by posting a 14-7 home ledger. Charlotte is fresh of a 125-100 blowout of Orlando on Monday, the fourth consecutive home win for the Hornets, all coming by double-digits. The Hornets have lost three of their past four home matchups with the Mavericks since 2014, as Dallas owns a perfect 4-0 ATS mark in its last four trips to North Carolina.

End of the Road

It?s been a rough trip for Detroit as the Pistons (16-19 SU, 16-18-1 ATS) are coming off three consecutive losses to the Pacers, Magic, and Bucks. The latest setback came in Tuesday?s 121-98 blowout defeat at Milwaukee as 10-point underdogs, marking the third loss to the Central division leaders this season. Since shocking Toronto at the buzzer in mid-November, the Pistons have compiled a dreadful 1-8 SU and 3-6 ATS mark in the last nine contests away from Little Caesars Arena.

The final stop on this away swing takes place in Memphis to face the struggling Grizzlies (18-18 SU, 17-19 ATS). Memphis has dropped seven of its past nine games, including Monday?s 113-101 defeat at Houston after falling behind by 23 points at halftime. The Grizzlies own a miserable 2-10 ATS record in the last 12 games, including a 1-5 ATS mark in this stretch at FedEx Forum.

Staring in a Mirror

Both the Pelicans and Nets own identical records heading into their first contest of 2019 as the two teams hook up at Barclays Center. New Orleans (17-21 SU, 16-22 ATS) picked up only its third win in the last nine games in Monday?s 123-114 triumph over Minnesota to cash as 5 ?-point favorites. The Pelicans won in spite of Anthony Davis not suiting up, but the All-Star is expected to play tonight in Brooklyn as New Orleans goes for the season sweep after defeating the Nets at home in late October.

The Nets (17-21 SU, 19-19 ATS) posted an impressive eight-game ATS hot streak in December, but Brooklyn limped towards the end of 2018 by covering once in its final five games. The latest two losses came on the highway in double-digit defeats at Charlotte and Milwaukee to suffer back-to-back setbacks for the first time since early December. The Nets have had their issues against Western Conference foes at home this season by losing seven of nine times, while dropping a double-overtime thriller to the Pelicans at Barclays Center last season.

In a great spot

Washington has struggled this season with a 14-23 record, but are 6.5-point favorites tonight as they host the 11-25 Atlanta Hawks. The Wizards have been one of the worst teams defending opposing point guards allowing an average of 25.5 points a game on 44.6 percent shooting. Opposing point guards are contributing with three 3-pointers, along with six rebounds and 8.8 assists per game.

Atlanta Hawks point guard Trae Young is averaging 15.6 points a game, and has logged 11 games this year with 10 or more total assists. Look for him to find success and take Over his points, rebounds, assists total of 26.5.

Shining off the bench

Although Brooklyn guard Spencer Dinwiddie is not in the starting lineup, he is still averaging 28.9 minutes per game and has flourished in a bench role averaging 17.5 points a game. Today he is in an excellent spot as the Nets take on a Pelicans team surrendering 23.6 points, six rebounds and a league high 8.5 assists to opposing point guards.

With Allen Crabbe and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson out today with injuries, look for Dinwiddie to take advantage of potentially some extra playing time and take Over his points, rebounds, assists total of 27.5.

Owning the head-to-head

The Magic travel to Chicago to take on the Bulls as 1-point underdogs. The Magic have only won four of their most recent 10 games, and take on the Bulls at United Center, a venue they have not had much luck in.

The Bulls have dominated the head-to-head posting an 8-2 record over the last ten games with an average score of 101-88 in those contests. Orlando has lost the most recent five meetings on the road. Take Chicago on the moneyline.

Missing key pieces

Both the Timberwolves and Celtics will be without some key players today as they clash in Beantown. Minnesota will be without Derrick Rose, Jeff Teague, and Robert Covington, all doubtful with ankle injuries. The Celtics will be without Aron Baynes once again and most importantly Kyrie Irving.

Navigating the court without your starting point guard is tough, especially when he is your team's leading scorer with 23.1 points a game. Get this number on the Under quickly as both teams have enough notable players sitting out that the total should continue to drop. Take Under 217.

Pushing the pace early

Both the Lakers and Thunder rank near the top of the Association in first half points per game with the Lakers averaging 58, and OKC 56.6. Both teams are coming off games where they entered halftime scoring at least 60.

The pace of the game projects to be fast with lots of scoring opportunities as both teams average over 106 possessions per game. Back the first half game total Over 115.

Nets hold off Davis, Pelicans, 126-121
January 2, 2019
By The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) D'Angelo Russell had 22 points and 13 assists, and the Brooklyn Nets built up a big enough lead with a 73-point first half to withstand Anthony Davis' monstrous return to the lineup, beating the New Orleans Pelicans 126-121 on Wednesday night.

Davis finished with 34 points and a career-high 26 rebounds after a one-game absence, but there weren't enough rebounds to get in the first half, when the Nets opened a 24-point lead during their highest-scoring first half at home in 17 years.

Joe Harris added 21 points for the Nets, who had 105 points through three quarters, then got consecutive baskets by Harris when New Orleans trimmed the down to seven with under 5 minutes remaining.

The Nets made nine of their first 15 3-point attempts during their highest-scoring first half at home since getting 75 against Golden State on Feb. 19, 2002. They finished with seven players in double figures, with DeMarre Carroll (19) and Spencer Dinwiddie (18) leading strong efforts off the bench.

Elfrid Payton scored 25 points for New Orleans in his second game back after missing more than a month with a broken finger. Julius Randle had 21, and Jrue Holiday 20.

THUNDER 107, LAKERS 100

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Paul George scored 37 points while getting booed whenever he touched the ball by Lakers fans still angry he didn't choose their team in free agency, leading Oklahoma City over Los Angeles.

Russell Westbrook had 14 points, 16 rebounds and 10 assists despite 3-for-20 shooting, but his fellow Southern California native was the center of attention in the Thunder's only visit to the Lakers this season.

George scored nine points in the fourth quarter while the Thunder rallied from a five-point deficit and easily held on for their seventh win in 10 games.

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope scored 18 of his 25 points in the first half for the Lakers, who dropped to 1-3 during LeBron James' absence with a groin injury. Los Angeles has lost six of nine overall after its offense managed just six field goals in the fourth quarter, along with the Lakers' usual awful free-throw shooting.

76ERS 132, SUNS 127

PHOENIX (AP) - Joel Embiid, playing despite a sore left knee, matched his season high with 42 points, 30 in the first half, and grabbed 18 rebounds and Philadelphia held off Phoenix.

Ben Simmons added 29 points and J.J. Redick 27 for the 76ers, who were without Jimmy Butler and Wilson Chandler, both due to an upper respiratory infection. Devin Booker scored 37 points for the Suns. Deandre Ayton added 18 points and 11 boards and Josh Jackson scored 16 points.

Philadelphia led by 23 at halftime and as many as 30 in the third quarter. The Suns cut it to three points before Redick finally sealed the victory with a pair of free throws with 4.3 seconds to play.

CELTICS 115, TIMBERWOLVES 102

BOSTON (AP) - Gordon Hayward came off the bench to score a season-high 35 points in Boston's victory over Minnesota.

Terry Rozier scored 11 of his 16 points in the first quarter while making his third start of the season because Kyrie Irving scratched both of his eyes in Monday's game against San Antonio. Hayward took over from there, with 13 in the second quarter and 15 in the third to finish with his highest-scoring game with the Celtics.

Andrew Wiggins scored 31 points, and Karl-Anthony Towns had 20 of his 28 points - and grabbed five of his 12 rebounds - in the third quarter, when Minnesota trimmed a 22-point deficit to six points.

MAVERICKS 122, HORNETS 84

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Luka Doncic and Dennis Smith Jr. fueled an early long-range shooting spree and Dallas beat Charlotte to end a nine-game road skid.

Doncic and Smith each had 18 points, and Harrison Barnes added 17. The Mavericks hit 10 first-quarter 3-pointers - three from Doncic and two from Smith - and finished with 18 overall.

Dallas won for the first time on the road since Nov. 28. It entered the game with a NBA-worst 2-16 road record, compared to 15-3 at home.

Dwight Powell scored 15 points, Wesley Matthews had 11, and DeAndre Jordan had eight points and 13 rebounds. Doncic added 10 rebounds and Smith seven assists.

Kemba Walker led Charlotte with 11 points.

HEAT 117, CAVALIERS 92

CLEVELAND (AP) - Josh Richardson scored 24 points and Miami - playing with Dwyane Wade sidelined by an illness - rolled past Cleveland.

Miami hit 16 of 31 3-pointers. Tyler Johnson added 16 points, and Derrick Jones Jr. had 13. The Heat have won seven of nine to reach the .500 mark at 18-18.

Cleveland dropped to 8-30 - the worst record in the NBA - with its seventh straight loss.

Tristan Thompson and Rodney Hood returned from injuries and started for the Cavaliers, but it mattered little in their ninth loss in 10 games. Thompson had 14 points, and Hood added 13.

PISTONS 101, GRIZZLIES 94

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Blake Griffin had 26 points, eight rebounds and seven assists and Detroit beat Memphis to snap a three-game skid.

Griffin closed out a 13-0 Detroit run in the fourth quarter to put it out of reach, Reggie Jackson added 16 points, and Reggie Bullock and Luke Kennard had 13 each.

Jaren Jackson Jr. led Memphis with 26 points and 10 rebounds, and Kyle Anderson scored 15 points. Dillon Brooks finished with 14 points off the bench as the Grizzlies dropped their third straight.

WIZARDS 114, HAWKS 98

WASHINGTON (AP) - Bradley Beal had 24 points, Jeff Green added 22 and Thomas Bryant had 16 points and a career-high 15 rebounds in Washington's victory over Atlanta Hawks 114-98 on Wednesday night.

Tomas Satoransky had 14 points and a career-best 11 rebounds for the Wizards. Alex Len led Atlanya with a season-high 24 points and 11 rebounds. John Collins scored 21 points.

MAGIC 112, BULLS 84

CHICAGO (AP) - Nikola Vucevic had 22 points and 12 rebounds before sitting out the fourth quarter, Aaron Gordon added 18 points and a career-high nine assists, and Orlando routed Chicago.

Terrence Ross scored 15 off the bench and Evan Fournier had 13 points and seven assists for Orlando. The Magic shot 58 percent from the field.

Zach LaVine had 16 points, and Lauri Markkanen and Kris Dunn added 14 apiece for Chicago.

Quote of the Day
?I still have a lot of time making the decision, working with my family and teammates and coaches to figure out what?s best for me. But right now I?m excited to get this win. Excited to leave Coach with this victory for myself and the rest of the teammates. It?s a blessed situation right now.?

How many current NFL head coaches have won a Super Bowl as a HC?

Wednesday?s quiz

Russell Wilson was the only NFL QB to take every offensive snap for his team this season.

Tuesday?s quiz
Shaquille O?Neal played his college basketball at LSU.

Thursday?s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud??.

13) Winner of the Westgate SuperBook handicapping contest this season won $1.422M Sunday night, when the Colts beat Tennessee, edging two entrants who both had Tennessee in that game- those two guys, who needed Blaine Gabbert to cover the spread in order to have a shot at the big prize, both banked $409,000.

Imagine being involved in a game with a $1M swing and your side?s QB is Blaine Gabbert????

12) Over last three years, Pac-12 teams are 7-15 vs spread in bowl games.

11) Bowl records by conference, with one game left:

Conference USA: 4-2
SEC 6-5
Big Ten: 5-4
Big 12: 4-3
Mountain West: 3-2
Sun Belt: 3-2
Independents: 2-1
ACC: 5-5
Pac-12: 3-4
AAC: 2-5
MAC: 1-5

10) Central Michigan and Texas were only college football teams not to have at least one offensive play of 50+ yards this season.

9) Texas 28, Georgia 21? Before this game Tuesday night, Texas mascot Bevo went after UGa, the Georgia mascot down in the Superdome, and that aggression carried over into the game.

Hard to tell if Georgia let down because they didn?t make the 4-team playoff. Tom Herman?s career record vs spread as an underdog is now 9-2-1.

8) Trailblazers won in OT at Sacramento Tuesday night; Portland?s Jusuf Nurkić came the first player since steals and blocks first became official stats in 1973 to have 20+ points, 20+ rebounds, 5+ assists, 5+ steals and 5+ blocks in same game.

7) Oft-injured SS Troy Tulowitzki signed with the Bronx baseball team; they will pay him $600K next year while Toronto pays him $17.4M a year for two years to play against them.

6) Texas Tech 62, West Virginia 59? This was a truly awful game; teams played hard, but they combined to go 8-37 on the arc. WVU was 18-32 on foul line in a 3-point loss? had to be a brutal game to ref? very physical, ton of missed shots. West Virginia?s guards aren?t good.

5) Maryland 74, Nebraska 72? Cornhuskers came in as the ranked team, left with a loss.

4) Seton Hall 80, Xavier 70? Solid conference road win for the Pirates.

3) I?m guessing NFL teams generally dislike being on HBO?s Hard Knocks. Coaches hate distractions, and TV cameras are a pretty big distraction. Here are three ways teams can get out of being on Hard Knocks:

? They have a first-year head coach.
? They were in the playoffs in the last two seasons.
? They?ve been on Hard Knocks in any of the last ten years.

Taking those rules into account, only five teams can be forced into being HBO?s focus next summer: 49ers, Raiders, Redskins, Giants and Lions.

2) NFL TV ratings were up 5% this season, good news for the league.

1) Rough couple of days for people passing away, especially for 76-year olds:
? Tyler Trent, 20, the Purdue fan who was an inspiration to so many the last few months, passed away from bone cancer over the weekend.
? Wrestling announcer Gene Okerlund, 76, passed away after a lengthy illness.
? Daryl Dragon, 76, the captain in Captain and Tennille, passed away on Monday.
? One of the most underrated funny men ever, Bob Einstein, passed away at age 76. Einstein was a talented comedy writer- he was in Oceans 13 among other movies. His character Super Dave, a knock-off of Evil Knievel?s daredevil antics, made people laugh for years.

Inside the Paint - Thursday
Chris David

Game of the Night (TNT, 10:35 p.m. ET)

Houston (21-15 SU, 18-17-1 ATS) at Golden State (25-13 SU, 16-22 ATS)

All eyes will be on Oracle Arena this Thursday as the Rockets will meet the Warriors in the Bay Area for the first time this season. BookMaker.eu opened Golden State as a healthy eight-point favorite and some bettors could be scratching their heads based on the current form of both teams.

Houston has quietly won five straight and 10 of its last 11 games. More importantly, the club has gone 9-1-1 against the spread during this run and the last five victories came without the services of point guard Chris Paul, who is still nursing a hamstring injury. While the Rockets have been hot, the Warriors are near the bottom of the league for bettors (16-22 ATS) this season and they?ve gone 8-12 ATS at home despite owning one of the best straight up home records (15-5).

The Warriors have won and covered their last two games, both decisions came by double digits and they were on the road. At home, Golden State has dropped its last two games from Oracle and its just 2-8 ATS in the last 10 contests from Oakland. Make a note that head coach Steve Kerr and company haven?t put together three straight wins since it ripped off four victories in a row in early December.

NBA handicapper Tony Mejia weighed in on the marquee matchup for Thursday.

He said, ?Over James Harden?s last 10 games, he?s averaging 40.8 points per game and is the first player who has scored 30 or more in 10 consecutive contests since 2014. He?s averaged 8.9 assists in putting the Rockets on his back for wins in 10 of 11 and knows exactly what he?ll be facing here with Klay Thompson as a primary defender who will help try and steer him into other defenders. He shot just 8-for-23 in the only meeting against Golden State thus far, which included a 4-for-14 showing from 3-point range. Houston took advantage of Steph Curry?s absence and rolled 107-86, pulling away in the second half, but Chris Paul, Eric Gordon and James Ennis III all participated. It remains to be seen whether Mike D?Antoni will have any of the three available since Gordon and Ennis are close to a return. If the Rockets remain depleted, it will be easier for the Warriors to make Harden a distributor.?

There?s definitely a valid reason to stay away from the Rockets tonight and its directly attributed to its road mark. Houston has struggled away from the Toyota Center (10-8 SU, 8-10 ATS) this season and it?s just 3-7 in last 10 as a visitor.

Still, Harden has been on fire and nobody can dismiss Houston?s league-best record against winning teams (14-5) this season and eight of its last 10 came against clubs with .500 or better records.

Last season, Houston won two games at Oracle as a live underdog. It stunned the Warriors 122-121 on opening night with a late rally and it also captured Game 4 of the Western Conference Finals with a 95-92 win. The ?under? connected easily in that postseason game and the low side is on a 7-1 run in this series, which includes a 6-1 result in last year?s conference finals.

Toronto (28-11 SU, 16-22-1 ATS) at San Antonio (21-17 SU, 22-15 ATS)

The first game of the TNT double-header on Thursday also offers a lot of intrigue as Raptors small forward Kawhi Leonard will make his first trip back to San Antonio. Mejia offered up his thoughts on the possible drama from the AT&T Center. ?Kawhi Leonard shot 17 free-throws in scoring a career-high 45 points in Toronto?s 122-116 over Utah on Tuesday, attacking the paint relentlessly despite the presence of elite defensive center Rudy Gobert,? said Mejia.

?He?s really been aggressive over the past few games and looks all the way back after missing most of last season, so Spurs fans will be able to boo an effort that helped carry them to another title in ?14. The manner in which he forced his way out of San Antonio ensures he isn?t going to get a fond welcome in his return, but you can expect him to handle the scorn like any other basketball-playing robot would. The Raptors have lost four of the last five road games that Leonard has participated in, but he?s averaged 28 points and 7.4 rebounds in those contests.?

San Antonio opened as a 1 ?-point home favorite for the matchup and it should receive plenty of support perhaps more for new Spurs guard DeMar DeRozan, who was traded from Toronto for Leonard in the blockbuster deal last summer. The former USC standout has posted similar numbers in his first season with San Antonio but he still can?t buy a shot from 3-point land (17.5%) and surprisingly the Spurs lead the league from shooting percentage from distance (39.7%).

Support at home hasn?t been an issue recently for the Spurs, who have won and covered nine of their last 10 home games. The offense (118.1 PPG) and defense (101.4 PPG) have both been amazing during this stretch and two of their recent victories came against another pair of Eastern Conference contenders in the Celtics (120-111) and 76ers (123-96). Will the trend continue?

As Mejia noted, the Raptors have been in a funk on the road (1-4 SU, 0-5 ATS) and their only win was a two-point decision at Miami. Even though the club won?t have point guard Kyle Lowry (back) available, the confidence should still be high knowing they?ve gone 11-4 versus the West this season and that includes an impressive 7-2 mark on the road. The Spurs have gone 5-5 versus the East. At home versus the East, with the two aforementioned wins coming versus Boston and Philadelphia.

The home team has won the past three games in this series but all of the games were decided by four points or less.

Denver (24-11 SU, 19-16 ATS) at Sacramento (19-18 SU, 21-15-1 ATS)

The other game on tap for Thursday takes place from the Golden 1 Center in Northern California as Sacramento (+2 ?) will look to cool off Denver as a home underdog. The Nuggets have won seven of their last nine games and they currently own the best winning percentage in the West. However, Denver has been mired in a funk at the betting counter, dropping its last five games versus the number.

It?s also lost its last two games on the road and its record as a visitor (9-8) is much different than playing at the Pepsi Center (15-3) and that?s been a common theme for this club. A better barometer for me is what team?s doing against winning clubs and Denver (12-8) has answered the bell this season. The same can?t be said for Sacramento, who is 7-14 against teams above .500 while going 12-4 versus losing clubs.

The Kings have been better at home (10-8 SU, 11-6-1 ATS) this season but it enters this game with a pedestrian 5-5 record over the last 10 and the last three wins came by a combined seven points.

The Nuggets have won and covered six of the past seven encounters between the pair, which includes a 126-112 over Sacramento on Oct. 23 as an 11 ?-point favorite. The ?over? connected (228 ?) in that game and the number for this matchup opened a tad lower (227 ?). The Kings own the best ?over? mark (25-12) in the NBA but their total numbers have been a stalemate (9-9) at home. Denver has leaned to the ?under? (20-14-1) and that includes a 10-6-1 record away from home.

DeRozan, Spurs rout Raptors; Kawhi booed
January 3, 2019
By The Associated Press

SAN ANTONIO (AP) DeMar DeRozan had his first career triple-double with 21 points, 14 rebounds and 11 assists and the San Antonio Spurs welcomed back Kawhi Leonard with thunderous jeers in a 125-107 victory over the Toronto Raptors on Thursday night.

Leonard scored 21 points on 8-for-13 shooting, but the anger the Spurs' fans showered on him seemed to impact the MVP candidate. Leonard had to take a step back at the free throw line and compose himself amid chants of ''Traitor! Traitor!'' and ''Quitter! Quitter!'' from the capacity crowd that adored him during his seven seasons in San Antonio.

Leonard forced his way out of San Antonio in a trade that yielded DeRozan and Jakob Poeltl from Toronto for Leonard and Danny Green.

Leonard was booed heavily from the moment he walked onto the court for warmup. The boos continued during a pregame video tribute and player introductions, whenever he touched the ball and as he walked off the court following the lopsided loss.

DeRozan and the Spurs dominated the battle of former teammates, leading by as many as 28 points in snapping the Raptors' three-game winning streak. LaMarcus Aldridge scored 23 points for San Antonio, Bryn Forbes added 20, Derrick White 19 and Rudy Gay 13.

NUGGETS 117, KINGS 113

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Jamal Murray scored 17 of his 36 points in the fourth quarter and Denver beat Sacramento for its fourth straight win.

Nikola Jokic had 26 points and 13 rebounds, and the Nuggets maintained their lead atop the Western Conference by winning for the eighth time in 10 games. Mason Plumlee added 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Buddy Hield had 29 points to lead the Kings, who have lost three straight.

Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

? Rockets 135, Warriors 134 OT? Harden made a contested 3-pointer with 0:01 left in OT for the win. He was double-teamed; just a really difficult shot, and he made it.

? NC State 87, Miami 82? Wolfpack is 13-1, their best start since 1973-74.

? Minnesota 59, Wisconsin 52? Gophers (+10) led 29-14 at halftime.

? North Texas 63, Louisiana Tech 59? Two of better teams in Conference USA.

? Detroit 79, Wright St 58? Titans? Davis scored 48 points (10-15 on arc).

? Jacksonville St 83, Belmont 73? Gamecocks? 4th strait upset win vs Belmont.

**********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here??

13) Manny Diaz was the defensive coordinator at Miami LY; he left couple weeks ago to be the head coach at Temple, but when Mark Richt retired/was fired last week, Diaz jumped ship with the Owls and was named HC of the Hurricanes.

Must have been some difficult conversations this week when Diaz then fired all the offensive coaches on the Miami staff, guys he worked with the last three years. Awkward.

12) Moving the college football national title game around the country may not be the best idea; college football is wildly popular in the south, not so much in the rest of the country. You get a Clemson-Alabama matchup in northern California and ticket demand isn?t what it would be anywhere from Texas to Georgia along the gulf coast.

11) The starting five for the Nevada Wolf Pack, a college team, is older than the starting lineup for the Phoenix Suns, an NBA team.

10) Phillies signed reliever David Robertson to a two-year deal worth $23M.

9) Pelicans? star Anthony Davis had 34 points and 26 rebounds Wednesday in a 126-121 loss to the Nets; the last NBA player to reach those numbers in a regulation loss was Charles Barkley for the Suns, way back on March 24, 1995.

8) Saint Louis loses 6-9 freshman Carte? Are Gordon to transfer; he was scoring 8.9 ppg for the Billikens, who are 9-4 and considered a contender for the A-14 title.

Oregon Ducks? best player Bol Bol has a foot injury that has ended his season.

7) Couple of big comebacks Wednesday night:
? Bucknell beat Army 64-63 after trailing by 26 early in the 2nd half.
? Valparaiso beat Illinois State 58-56 on a halfcourt shot at the buzzer after trailing Redbirds by 10 points with 2:07 left.

6) Memphis Grizzlies lost 10 of their last 13 games and fell below .500 this week; after their home loss to Detroit Wednesday, teammates Garrett Temple and Omar Casspi apparently got into a scuffle in a team meeting. Grizzlies tried to keep the fracas quiet, but somebody spilled the beans to the media. Bottom line is, losing creates tension, which sometimes spills over.

5) Eric Kahane, a gourmet food businessman from southern California, went 5-0 in Week 17 and won $1.4M in the Westgate SuperContest football handicapping contest, beating over 3,100 handicappers in the process.

4) Jacksonville Jaguars are only NFL team without a player in the Hall of Fame.

3) Odd Fact of the Day: In 2018, Cincinnati had 20 more inches of rain than Seattle did.

2) Interesting sidebar to Eagles-Bears playoff game Sunday is that the two head coaches worked together for seven years under Andy Reid, in KC/Philly. Couple of QB gurus who are having lot of success this season working with very young quarterbacks.

1) Looking at NFL Wild Card weekend, over last four years, home side won 12 of 16 games, going 6-6 vs spread as a home favorite in those games.

Friday's Tip Sheet
Kevin Rogers

Game of the Night: Thunder at Blazers ? 10:35 PM EST

The two teams sitting behind the Nuggets for the top spot in the Northwest division hook up at Moda Center for the first time this season. Portland (22-16 SU, 19-19 ATS) swept the four-game regular season series in 2017-18 from Oklahoma City, as three of the victories came by eight points or less. Dating back to April 2016, Portland has captured eight of the previous nine matchups with OKC, including a perfect 5-0 mark at home.

The Thunder (24-13 SU, 21-16 ATS) rallied past the Lakers on Wednesday at Staples Center, 107-100 to cash as five-point favorites. Paul George burned his hometown team by scoring 37 points for OKC, in spite of hitting only 2-of-11 three-point attempts. Russell Westbrook shot a putrid 3-of-20 from the floor, but still managed to score 14 points, while pulling down 16 rebounds, and dishing out 10 assists. Oklahoma City improved to 4-2 ATS in its last six road contests, while picking up only its third cover in the past nine opportunities as an away favorite.

The Blazers squandered a 14-point halftime lead on Tuesday at Sacramento as the Kings rallied back to force overtime. However, Portland held off Sacramento in the extra time, 113-108, as Jusuf Nurkic posted an incredible 24-point, 23-rebound performance. The Blazers? backcourt duo of Damian Lillard and C.J. McCollum managed to connect on only 1-of-14 three-point attempts, but Portland improved to 7-3 in its last 10 games overall.

South Least

Not one of the five teams in the Southeast division owns a winning record currently as two playoff squads from last season meet up in Miami. The Heat (18-18 SU, 21-15 ATS) can climb into first place with a victory over the Wizards (15-23 SU, 14-24 ATS), as the road team has won each of the first two matchups this season. The OVER has hit each time, as the Wizards outlasted the Heat at American Airlines Arena on November 10 as 3 ?-point underdogs, 116-110.

Washington is coming off back-to-back wins over Charlotte and Atlanta at home following a 2-9 stretch, led by Bradley Beal?s 24 points in a 114-98 triumph over the Hawks on Wednesday. Since winning at Atlanta on December 5, the Wizards are riding a dreadful 0-7 SU/ATS streak in the last seven games away from Capital One Arena. Washington has struggled mightily in the road underdog role this season by posting a 2-12 SU/ATS record, but one of those victories came at Miami in November.

Miami is riding a 7-2 run the last nine games, which includes victories over Houston, Milwaukee, and Memphis. The Heat routed the Cavaliers twice over the last week, including a 117-92 blowout at Quicken Loans Arena on Wednesday. Miami is in the midst of five consecutive OVERS, including three straight OVERS at American Airlines Arena.

Another Bucks Blowout?

Milwaukee is halfway done with a six-game homestand as the Bucks (26-10 SU, 20-14-2 ATS) are coming off three straight blowouts by double-digits. After knocking off the Knicks on Christmas Day at Madison Square Garden, Milwaukee cruised past New York at Fiserv Forum on December 27 as 14 ?-point favorites, 112-96. The Bucks took care of the Nets two days late by 14, followed by a 121-98 rout of Detroit to easily cash as 10-point favorites.

The Bucks seek their ninth win in 10 tries as Milwaukee hosts Atlanta. The Hawks (11-26 SU, 16-21 ATS) will face old coach Mike Budenholzer for the first time since he parted ways with Atlanta following a five-year stint. Atlanta had won five of seven games from December 18 through December 29, but the Hawks are coming off back-to-back road losses at Indiana and Washington. Although the Hawks failed to cash against the Wizards, Atlanta owns a 5-2 ATS mark in the past seven games as an underdog.

Maverick Money

Dallas (18-19 SU, 23-14 ATS) finished 2018 with only two road victories in 18 tries, but is 1-0 away from American Airlines Center in 2019. The Mavericks destroyed the Hornets on Wednesday as 1 ?-point underdogs, 122-84, paced by a 42-point first quarter outburst. Four Dallas starters finished in double-figures as not one Maverick scored more than 18 points, but the Mavs were able to drill 18 three-pointers to grab their sixth cover in the last seven games.

The Celtics (22-15 SU, 19-18 ATS) picked up their third consecutive home victory in Wednesday?s 115-102 triumph over the Wolves to cash as six-point favorites. Boston played without point guard Kyrie Irving, who sat out due to an eye injury, but the Celtics were boosted by Gordon Hayward?s 35 points off the bench on an efficient 14-of-18 shooting from the floor. The Celtics eclipsed the OVER for the 10th time in 11 games, including their fourth straight OVER at TD Garden.

Boston is playing with revenge after losing at Dallas in late November, 113-104 as 2 ?-point favorites. The victory by Dallas snapped a four-game skid against Boston dating back to November 2016, while neither team has busted the 100-point mark in the last two matchups at TD Garden. Unfortunately, Irving will not suit up once again as Boston owns a 2-1 SU/ATS record without the All-Star guard this season.

Sun Setting

Following a 7-0 ATS run through most of December, the Suns (9-30 SU, 17-22 ATS) have gone backwards of late by compiling an 0-4 SU and 1-3 ATS record on their current homestand. Granted, all four teams will likely be in the playoffs (Oklahoma City, Denver, Golden State, and Philadelphia), but the lone cover came thanks to a furious fourth quarter rally in four-point loss to the Nuggets last Saturday. The Suns fell behind the 76ers by 23 points at halftime on Wednesday, but stormed back with 78 second half points in a 132-127 setback as 3 ?-point underdogs.

The Clippers (21-16 SU, 21-16 ATS) invade the Valley for the second time in less than a month as Los Angeles outlasted Phoenix on December 10 as 9 ?-point favorites, 123-119. L.A. has captured 10 consecutive matchups with Phoenix since the start of the 2016-17 season, including five victories at Talking Stick Resort Arena. The Clippers are coming off consecutive home losses to the Spurs and 76ers, but L.A. has won only two of its last seven games away from Staples Center since the start of December.
