Embiid, 76ers rout Raptors, 116-95
May 2, 2019
ShareFacebookTwitterDiggMySpace

PHILADELPHIA (AP) Joel Embiid had knocked the air out of Toronto by the time he punctuated a Game 3 victory with a windmill dunk. Embiid sprinted down the court with his arms stretched out like airplane wings, and the Philadelphia 76ers flying high in the postseason.

Embiid refused to get tripped up back in Philly, scoring 33 points and playing to the ''MVP!'' chants to lead the Sixers to a 116-95 victory over Toronto Raptors on Thursday night.

Philadelphia took a 2-1 lead in the Eastern Conference semifinal series.

''When I have fun, my game just changes,'' Embiid said. ''I'm always told if I don't smile during the game it means I'm having a bad game or I'm not into it. I know to get my game going, I've got to have fun on the court.''

Embiid also had 10 rebounds, shaking off a pair of passive games and became the driving force on offense the Sixers needed as they chase their first NBA championship since 1983.

He made the game his own in the third quarter and helped the Sixers put away a Raptors team badly overmatched outside of Kawhi Leonard.

Embiid struck a chord when he buried a 3 in the third that stretched Philadelphia's lead to 12. That was start of a string of plays that got Toronto's attention. Embiid chased a loose ball and was tripped when Pascal Siakam intentionally stuck out his right leg and sent Philly's All-Star tumbling to the court. The crowd went wild and Siakam was hit with a flagrant foul. Embiid made both free throws as fans - including some of Philadelphia's biggest sports stars - serenaded him with chants of ''MVP! MVP!''

Jimmy Butler, the Game 2 standout, dunked off his own steal and the Sixers had quickly put the game out of reach. Butler had 22 points.

Embiid scored another layup and waved his arms and pointed with a smile as wide as the hoop. Embiid went 9 of 18 from the floor and made 12 of 13 free throws.

It was moments like this why the 76ers endured the painful Process - the years of tanking seasons for high draft picks, like in 2014 when they drafted Embiid with the No. 3 overall pick.

Hall of Famer Allen Iverson and rapper Meek Mill engaged in a lengthy embrace from the courtside seats as the Sixers moved two wins away from their Eastern Conference final appearance since 2001.

The Sixers just had to survive Leonard.

Leonard toyed with Ben Simmons in the third to lead Toronto's charge back into the game. The Raptors ran Simmons through screens to give Leonard the space he needed to create and bury open jumpers. And when there was no space, Leonard simply bullied his way to the basket. He shoved a right elbow into James Ennis III and spun around him for a two-handed jam. Leonard made all six baskets and scored 14 points in the quarter to cut the deficit to eight points. Kyle Lowry and Danny Green offered little help (20 combined points) and Leonard couldn't carry the Raptors on his own.

''They did a great job scoring. We didn't,'' Leonard said.

Leonard scored 33 points, and Siakam added 20.

''I think we got outplayed in just about every area we can get outplayed,'' Raptors coach Nick Nurse said. ''It's been a while since we've seen this team play that way.''

The Sixers split the two games in Toronto after a losing streak in the Canadian city that dated to 2012. They returned home to a delirious crowd amped for one of the most crucial games of the Process era.

Embiid wore a black Process hoodie to the postgame press conference.

''We've got a lot more to give and do something special,'' Embiid said.

Embiid, who missed a game against New Jersey in the last series with a sore left knee, averaged only 14 points and shot 28 percent (7 of 25) from the floor in the first two games and was tied up by Marc Gasol in frustrating fashion. Not in Game 3. Embiid buried a 3 and followed with a sweet spin move on Gasol the next time down that got the Sixers rolling. The franchise center's sweetest play came when he blocked Leonard's layup in the lane, hustled back and got the ball in his hands, and connected with Tobias Harris in the corner for a 3. Embiid scored 18 points in the half and pushed the Sixers to a 64-53 lead at the break.

TIP-INS

Raptors: Serge Ibaka was hit with a flagrant foul on JJ Redick in the first quarter.

76ers: Simmons, an Australian, smacked Kyle Lowry right in the land down under and sent the Raptors guard down and smacking the court in pain. ...

Greg Monroe (sprained left ankle) and Mike Scott (right foot) played ... Phillies slugger Rhys Hoskins, Flyers star James van Riemsdyk and Eagles QB Carson Wentz rang the ceremonial Liberty Bell to start the game.

UP NEXT

Game 4 is Sunday in Philadelphia.

************************

Friday?s List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here?..

13) Mets 1, Reds 0? Noah Syndergaard threw a complete game 1-0 shutout and hit a home run; this is only the 7th time this has EVER happened, and only second time since 1971. Here are the other six times this happened (thanks to Andrew Simon for the research):

? Red Ruffing 8/13/32
? Spud Chandler, 5/21/38
? Early Wynn, 5/1/59
? Jim Bunning, 5/5/65
? Juan Pizarro, 9/16/71
? Bob Welch, 6/17.83

12) %age of runs scored on home runs the last four years:
2016: 40.2%
2017: 42.3%
2018: 40.3%
2019: 43.4% (thru Monday)

Before 2016, the all-time record was 37.3%.

11) Milwaukee Brewers have pitching issues; only once in their last 18 games has their starting pitcher finished the 6th inning; in half of those 18 games, the starter didn?t even finish the 5th inning, so there has been a tremendous strain on their bullpen.

10) Pac-12 is joining the ACC, Big 14 in moving to 20 conference basketball games, starting with the 2020-21 season. This does two main things:
? Creates more programming for the Pac-12 Network.
? Decreases the opportunities for mid-majors to schedule quality non-league games.

Now, if the geniuses who run the Pac-12 would allow their network to be shown on DirecTV. then maybe the league could get the exposure it deserves.

9) Golden State Warriors? TV guy Jim Barnett was in the SF Giants? TV booth during the game Wednesday night; he was saying how when he played in the NBA (Barnett had an 11-year career, scoring 11.7 ppg), he went through four pairs of sneakers per season.

Then he was saying that nowadays, Stephen Curry wears a different pair of sneakers every game. Must make the Warriors? equipment manager?s job a real joy.

8) Apparently the family of a Chinese student admitted to Stanford in 2017 paid $6.5M to try to guarantee her spot there. My question is, why? Stanford is an excellent school, but still??

Why $6.5M? Why not $1M? Or $10M?

Is it that difficult to get into these schools? Or that lucrative to be an alumnus of one of these schools? Why not just save the $6.5M and go to a state school?

7) Baseball injuries:
? White Sox put P Carlos Rodon (edema in left arm) on IL.

6) College basketball transfer portal:
? Rutgers poaches Stony Brook grad transfer Akwasi Yeboah (16.7 ppg).

5) Wednesday night was 7th time in Jacob deGrom?s career that he?s thrown 7+ scoreless innings without getting the win in that game.

4) From the New York Post:

?Over last three fiscal years, Madison Square Garden paid CEO James Dolan $75.6M, according to a lawsuit filed on behalf of his shareholders. The average salary for CEO?s at similar companies is $17M a year.

The lawsuit claims Dolan is too focused on touring and recording as the frontman and guitarist for his band JD & the Straight Shot. In 2017 the band performed 50 times in six countries and 41 US cities.?

Lot fewer people would complain about Dolan if the Knicks didn?t suck every year. They?ve missed the playoffs the last six years, haven?t won an NBA title since 1973. NHL?s Rangers haven?t won the Stanley Cup since 1994; that is their only title since 1940- they missed the playoffs the last two years.

3) There are 16 players in the Pro Football Hall of Fame who weren?t drafted.

2) Sounds like Auburn is going to have a freshman QB starting this fall, which isn?t always good for a coach?s job security.

1) Get well soon to Celtics? GM Danny Ainge, who suffered a mild heart attack in Milwaukee Tuesday night. He received immediate medical attention and is expected to make a full recovery.

Eastern Conference Semifinals ? Game 3 -- Series tied 1-1

No. 1 Milwaukee at No. 4 Boston (-2/220), ESPN, 8:05 p.m. ET

April 30 ? Bucks (-7.5) 123 vs. Celtics 102 (Over 219.5)
April 28 ? Celtics (+8) 112 at Bucks 90 (Under 223.5)

Feb. 21 - Bucks (-6) 98 vs. Celtics 97 (Under 227)
Dec. 21 ? Bucks (-1.5) 120 at Celtics 107 (Over 223.5)
Nov. 1 - Celtics (-2) 117 vs. Bucks 113 (Over 220.5)

The Bucks rebounded nicely from a dreadful Game 1 by posting a 22-point rout of the Celtics in Game 2, scoring 33 more points than they produced in the series opener.

They?ll now take the floor at TD Garden hoping the adjustment period that lies ahead doesn?t trip them as drastically as it did to open the series. Because Blake Griffin was missing in the first two games of the first round, Milwaukee didn?t really get much of a challenge against Detroit. I believe that did it a disservice in Game 1 and may make it more difficult to get settled in a hostile arena against a team that can really feed off their crowd in a way the Pistons couldn?t.

Celtics-Bucks definitely has the punch-counterpunch feel of a series that?s destined to go the distance.

Although Giannis Antetokounmpo took the brunt of the criticism for the Game 1 loss since he shot 7-for-21, Eric Bledsoe deserved the most blame because he shrunk and did so early. He was the first Bucks player subbed out and could never get comfortable against Kyrie Irving, ultimately finishing 1-for-5 from the field in a dreadful effort in which he gave his team nothing. If Bledsoe isn?t out there pushing pace so Antetokounmpo can run the floor, the Bucks are ordinary. A Celtics team with a defensive anchor like Al Horford can make life difficult.

Bledsoe was much better in Game 2, finishing a plus-23 by scoring 21 points and adding five assists. It might surprise you to find out that Milwaukee?s plus-minus leader in their series-tying victory was George Hill, who came off the bench and defended as the glue guy in a unit that helped pull away from the Celtics in the third quarter. Brook Lopez hasn?t had the impact that he enjoyed during the regular season so far in the series, so we?ll see if he?s able to have more of an impact on the road.

Irving was outplayed on Tuesday night, shooting 4-for-18, while Jayson Tatum played poorly in finishing 2-for-10. He?s missed 13 of 17 shots in this series. Gordon Hayward and Terry Rozier shot 9-for-16 from the field off the bench in the win, combining for 24 points, but shot 3-for-15 in Game 2. Getting back home should help all those guys bounce back. Boston has won four of its last five home games but hasn?t played on its floor since a 99-91 Game 2 win over the Pacers in first-round action.

Milwaukee has more road wins than anyone except Golden State since the Warriors had to put in extra work at Staples Center to get past the Clippers. It won its last trip into Boston on Dec. 21, winning 120-107 by capitalizing on Horford?s absence. Horford and Morris have been Boston?s most consistent performers thus far in this series, which is key since they?re the duo being tasked with helping to slow down Antetokounmpo. ?Greek Freak? averaged 31 points, 10.7 rebounds and 4.3 assists while shooting 59 percent in leading the Bucks to a 2-1 regular-season mark against Boston. He led the way with 29 points on Tuesday in addition to nine boards and four assists and must produce even more if Milwaukee is going to steal back homecourt advantage over the next few days. The 22 points he scored in Game 1 won?t cut it..

Khris Middleton shot just 36.5 percent but averaged 17.3 points, 8.7 rebounds and 4.7 assists against Boston this season. He finished 7-for-10 from 3-point range in Game 2 to deliver 28 points after being Milwaukee?s top performer amid the series-opening disappointment by finishing with 16 points, 10 boards and six assists. Middleton was drastically less efficient on the road during the regular-season than he was at home, shooting just 40 percent from the field. He did shoot 36 percent from 3-point range and averaged 17.3 points, so the Bucks will be counting on him to continue his steady play to give them a boost.

Both teams will press forward without key guards for at least another game with Malcolm Brogdon and Marcus Smart remaining sidelined. Brogdon is out with a foot injury that has kept him out the past few weeks, which means Bledsoe and Hill can expect their normal allotment of minutes. Brogdon, who led the league in free-throw shooting this season while shooting nearly 43 percent and playing fantastic perimeter defense, is nearing a return and is likely to play late in the series. Smart, a tremendous perimeter defender and a competitor whose intensity is infectious, tore his oblique just before the playoffs began. He?s been seen running and is far ahead of schedule but there?s no timetable for a return, which means Milwaukee may miss him altogether.

The Bucks have averaged 122 points in their wins while being suffocated and held to 90 in their loss, so their team total being set at 109 seems fitting. Boston?s number has been placed at 211.

Oddsmakers sent out an opening total of 224.5 for Game 1 and saw it close at 223.5 at most books. The number dipped to 219.5 for Tuesday?s game and crept over late. During the season, the pair watched the ?over? go 2-1 in their three games and the totals ranged from 220.5 to 227.5. The ?under? went 5-1 in that 2016 series between Stevens? Celtics and Budenholzer?s Hawks despite no total closing higher than 206 and the last two winding up sub-200.

It was rare to see the Bucks listed as underdogs this season as they?ll be in that role for the first time since April 10 loss to Oklahoma City. They?ve performed well in the role, going 6-3 straight up and 7-2 against the spread while the ?over? went 7-2 in those games. You can also toss out one of the losses as the Bucks rested Antetokounmpo near the end of their schedule.

Despite the solid numbers when catching points, Chris David of VegasInsider.com believes Boston?s recent playoff pedigree at home justifies them being a favorite in Game 3.

?Going back to last year?s improbable playoff run with an undermanned roster, Boston went an eye-opening 12-1 both straight up and against the spread at TD Garden. To be fair, they did get a lucky cover in Game 2 of the first round against Indiana but a win is a win and we can?t dismiss this run. In case you forgot, the lone loss in 2018 came against LeBron James and the Cavaliers in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals when the young Celtics couldn?t buy shot from the outside,? said David. ?Since Brad Stevens took over as head coach with Boston, the club has gone 19-9 SU and 21-7 ATS in 28 playoff games at home.

?Since I mentioned the loss to Cleveland last season, it?s important to know that six of the nine losses came against LeBron and his Cleveland-led teams. In other matchups, Boston went 16-3 both SU and ATS at home under Stevens in the postseason,? added David. ?Four of those victories came in the first round of the playoffs last season against the Bucks with the outcomes decided by an average of 10.3 points per game.?

Officials for this game, Ken Mauer, Tony Brown and Kane Fitzgerald aren't shy about blowing their whistle and becoming part of the show. All have seen the 'over' prevail in the majority of their contests. Game 4 will be played Monday night in Boston, so a miserable, angst-filled weekend awaits the loser.

Western Conference Semifinals ? Game 3 -- Series tied 1-1

April 5 ? Nuggets (-6) 119 vs. Blazers 110 (Over 216)
Jan. 13 ? Nuggets (-4.5) 116 vs. Blazers 113 (Over 217)
Nov. 30 ? Nuggets (+1.5) 113 at Blazers 112 (Over 214)

The Trail Blazers put their fresher legs to good use in clamping down against the Nuggets in Game 2, avoiding an 0-2 series deficit and a must-win tonight. We?ll now get to see if they can put their foot on Denver?s throat at home the way they did the Thunder the last time they took the floor at Moda Center.

Damian Lillard finished off a 50-point night with a series-clinching 3-pointer over Paul George?s outstretched arms to eliminate Oklahoma City on April 23. It?s going to be difficult to ever reproduce the magic of that evening, but the Blazers do have an 11-game home winning streak, last losing to OKC on March 7. Only the Bucks and Nuggets have had more success at home than the Trail Blazers.

Denver point guard Jamal Murray has been receiving treatment after injuring his right thigh in Game 2. His mobility was noticeably compromised on Wednesday night and factored into the Nuggets fading in the second half, so we?ll see if he?s able to make it through tonight?s game while supplying his normal production. That?s an immense variable since we?d see more of Monte Morris and Will Barton in a playmaker role if Murray isn?t right.

Denver opened the series as a slight favorite (-145) over the Trail Blazers (+125), who then became a great value bet prior to Game 2 since they went into that game at 14-to-1 to win the West and 40-to-1 to win the NBA title, making them the biggest longshot remaining in the field according to Westgate Superbook prior to getting even. As things stand now, if you think the Warriors are at all vulnerable, Lillard, an Oakland native, is currently more likely to get over against them than James Harden given his injured eyelid and rough form shooting the ball.

Portland had dropped seven of eight against Denver dating back to last season entering Game 2, but Enes Kanter continued playing through shoulder pain and was the x-factor the Blazers need him to be to at least provide some resistance against Nikola Jokic, who has long dominated them and continues to be a terror inside. Meyers Leonard and Zack Collins have also had roles in trying to make life as difficult as possible for Jokic, who doesn?t have to deal with former teammate and good friend Jusuf Nurkic, who was lost for the season on March 25 with a horrific ankle injury.

Despite CJ McCollum and Mo Harkless dealing with injuries and only getting healthy late in the season, the Blazers hit their stride with Evan Turner improving off the bench and newcomer Rodney Hood scoring efficiently the way he was rarely able to in a similar role with the LeBron James-led Cavs last season.

NBA expert Kevin Rogers points out a few trends that favor the home team in Game 3.

?For the most part, the Blazers have actually performed well off a road win since the All-Star break. Portland has won nine of its last 13 games off a highway victory, including the Lillard-led clincher against Oklahoma City,? Rogers said. ?The Blazers have compiled a solid 13-1 record in the past 14 games at the Moda Center since early February with the lone defeat coming to the Thunder in overtime on March 7. However, the Nuggets covered in both visits to Portland, including as 8.5-point underdogs late in the season in a 115-108 setback.?

Kanter has been wearing padding over his left shoulder, but has remained effective and is averaging 20.5 points and eight boards through the first two games, keeping pace with Jokic?s 26.5 points, 11. 5 rebounds and six assists. He?s making the big man work, and there was significant concern that he wouldn?t be able to defend effectively enough to help replace Nurkic when the postseason began, so his effort must be recognized as the x-factor for Portland.

Lillard played in all four regular-season meetings against Denver, averaging 21.3 points but shooting just 37 percent from the field and 28.6 from 3-point range. Although he scored 39 points in the Game 1 loss, Gary Harris helped limit him to just 14 points on 5-for-17 shots in Game 2. Over the first two games of this series, he?s shot 5-for-19 from 3-point range, which makes you wonder if an explosion is coming now that he?s back home. Will familiarity and home love lead to the return of ?Logo? Lillard? If so, Denver will have a long night ahead. Lillard shot 40 percent from 3-point range at home as opposed to 34 percent on the road during the regular season and despite scoring roughly the same amount of points per game.

The team total for the Blazers has been set at 109.5, while Denver comes in at 105.5. The Nuggets have eclipsed that number only once in its last four games. Mike Callahan, Eric Lewis and Rodney Mott will be on the whistle. Portland will host Game 4 on Sunday evening.

Antetokounmpo has 32, Bucks beat Celtics 123-116 in Game 3
May 3, 2019
ShareFacebookTwitterDiggMySpace

BOSTON (AP) Giannis Antetokounmpo kept attacking and the Boston Celtics kept fouling.

The fouls may have slowed the second half of Game 3, but nothing could stop Antetokounmpo from putting together a signature performance in TD Garden.

Antetokounmpo had 32 points and 13 rebounds, George Hill finished with 21 points and the Milwaukee Bucks beat Boston 123-116 on Friday night to take a 2-1 lead in the Eastern Conference semifinal series.

Khris Middleton added 20 points.

Antetokounmpo had only 13 field goal attempts but had 16 points from the free throw line in a game that featured 53 total fouls called - 39 in the second half. Including Milwaukee's two regular-season games in Boston, Antetokounmpo has scored 30 or more points in each of his trips to TD Garden in 2018-19.

''I'm just gonna keep being aggressive. That's what my teammates want me to do,'' Antetokounmpo said. ''If I have to take it all the way, I'll take it all the way.''

Kyrie Irving scored 29 points and Jayson Tatum had 20 for the Celtics, who host Game 4 on Monday.

Boston led by a point at the half but was outscored 40-31 in the third quarter and trailed by as many as 17 points in the final period.

The Celtics were also outscored 52-24 in the paint and had 18 turnovers leading to 28 Milwaukee points.

Irving acknowledged the fouls did slow down the game and stunt Boston's efforts late.

''It's getting ridiculous at this point,'' Irving said, using an expletive to describe the lulls the fouls created.

The Bucks threw the Celtics a tactical curveball in Game 2, inserting Nikola Mirotic into the starting lineup in place of Sterling Brown.

In Game 3 it was Celtics coach Brad Stevens who brought new wrinkles, notably going with a small lineup that featured 6-foot-7 Semi Ojeleye guarding the 6-11 Antetokounmpo when he returned to the game at the start of the second quarter and again in the third quarter.

Boston also kept going at Antetokounmpo throughout the game when it had the ball. It included a one-handed dunk by Jaylen Brown over the Bucks' star early in the third quarter that brought the Celtics fans inside TD Garden to their feet. It was reminiscent of a two-handed dunk he had over Antetokounmpo in Boston's Game 1 win.

Friday's version complemented several nice defensive plays by Brown, including blocking a Tony Snell layup attempt off the backboard.

Still, Milwaukee managed to keep racking up points in the paint. The Bucks led by as many as 12 in the third quarter and took a 95-87 lead into the fourth.

That was the score when Brown was called for his fifth foul with 10:53 left on what appeared to be a light touch of Eric Bledsoe near the baseline. It brought animated protests from both Brown and Stevens. A few trips later, Tatum received a technical for protesting his foul of Antetokounmpo.

Stevens said he didn't think his team was overly frustrated by the foul calls.

''I just think ultimately they made a lot of plays in that quarter and we didn't,'' he said.

The Bucks started to rack up points at the line and their lead grew to 114-97 by the time Brown came back into the game with 4:53 remaining.

Bucks coach Mike Budenholzer said Antetokounmpo is hard to stop when he's this locked in to finding ways to score and get his teammates involved.

''He's just such a force. He can get through cracks,'' Budenholzer said. ''He's going to finish or get to the free throw line a lot if he keeps playing like this.''

TIP-INS

Bucks: Finished 15 of 37 from the 3-point line.

Celtics: Finished 30 of 32 from the free throw line

HONORING HONDO

The Celtics players wore black warmup T-shirts adorned with a green No. 17 to honor Hall of Famer John Havlicek, who died last week at age 79 after a short battle with Parkinson's disease.

The team also observed a moment of silence for him prior to tipoff. Later after the game's first timeout, a highlight video was shown on the jumbotron. It ended with a spotlight being shined on his retired No. 17 banner hanging in the rafters.

Voted one of the NBA's 50 greatest players, Havlicek won eight titles with Boston and his steal of Hal Greer's inbounds pass helped the Celtics hold off Philadelphia in the 1965 Eastern Conference final.

HOMETOWN KID

The Bucks' bench outscored Boston's 42-16, with Hill and Pat Connaughton (14) leading the way.

Connaughton, who grew up as a Celtics fan in nearby Arlington, had a large rooting section of friends and family in the crowd. But he said there was no special meaning to helping Milwaukee beat his hometown team in a playoff game.

''Hopefully, in a few more weeks, I'll be able to look back and say it was pretty cool, growing up six miles away, winning a game at the TD Garden,'' said Connaughton, who also had seven rebounds and two steals.

Game 4 is Monday night in Boston.

Saturday?s List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind??.

13) A 14-year old kid named Yang Kuang played in the European Tour event in China this week; he made the cut by a stroke, making a 15-foot putt on the last hole to finish the two days -1.

They show the kid get up and down from the bunker; he isn?t very big, but what a future he has, to be able to hold his own against pros when he is just starting high school.

12) So I?m having lunch at Denny?s Friday, and the couple in the next booth is having a fairly big argument; they?re newlyweds, and the Mrs is ?stressed out?, but they can?t agree on why she is stressed out, which stresses her out even further. Neither person is happy.

This goes on for a while, then they mercifully ask for the check, take their argument elsewhere. Hopefully they have a comfortable couch in their home, seeing how the Mr figured to be sleeping there Friday night. Oy.

11) The dictionary defines ?scapegoat? this way:

?a person who is blamed for the wrongdoings, mistakes, or faults of others, especially for reasons of expediency.?

Or in the case of the Washington Nationals, pitching coach Derek Lilliquist, who got told to take a hike Thursday after Washington stumbled to a 13-17 start.

Not his fault Bryce Harper signed in Philly.

10) Braves 7, Marlins 2? Last year, when Ronald Acuna was batting leadoff and hitting lot of homers, Jose Urena of Miami drilled him with the first pitch of a game and got tossed. Lot of words were exchanged since then. This game was the first time since then that Urena faced Atlanta.

Bottom of 2nd inning, Urena comes to bat and the first pitch is behind him, which wasn?t very subtle- Urena actually did a good job to avoid the pitch. Home plate ump immediately tosses Braves? P Kevin Gausman out of the game, which didn?t go over well with the Atlanta dugout.

9) You know the home team is pretty sad when their TV people send the roving reporter out to promote the stadium?s concession stands in the 2nd inning, and during her report, there is no one else in the shot. No one. Zero. Bupkis.

Marlins? home games are like the old joke, that if you?re an escaped convict, that would be a good place to hide out, since no one would think to look for anyone there.

8) With more strikeouts/home runs in baseball, that means fewer balls in play; does that lead to teams play worse fielders, since they?re going to get less action?

Milwaukee is playing Mike Moustakas at 2B, Travis Shaw at 3B; I?m guessing they have to have a 2B with better range than Moustakas somewhere in their system.

7) NFL and FOX agreed to fewer, but longer commercial breaks during next year?s Super Bowl. Four commercial breaks per quarter instead of five, with each running for 2.5 minutes instead of two minutes. Overall, same amount of commercials will be shown.

6) Detroit Lions? trainer quit this week, to pursue ?other opportunities?; the guy had spent 25 years in the NFL, the last five in Detroit. He was replaced by somebody from U of Michigan, who had previously spent time with the Patriots, Giants. Go figure. Matt Patricia spent a long time with the Patriots.

I may be a conspiracy theorist here, but guys don?t quit jobs like that, not when they?ve spent 25 years in the league. New head coach comes in, and after one season the trainer ?quits?. It will read that he jumped ship, but the suspicion here is that he got pushed.

5) Hope for New Jersey Jets? fans this season:

Since 2000, Jets head coaches, 1st year and then after??

2000 Al Groh First year: 9-7 Only lasted one year
2001 Herm Edwards: First year: 10-6 Rest of time: 29-35
2006: Eric Mangini: First year: 10-6 Rest of time: 13-19
2008: Rex Ryan: First year: 9-7 Rest of time: 37-43
2015: Todd Bowles: First year: 10-6 Rest of time: 14-33
2019 will be Adam Gase?s first year as Jets? coach.

4) Cincinnati Reds scored total of nine runs in Tyler Mahle?s first six starts, which explains why they lost five of those games. Mahle is 0-4, 4.09 with a 1.30 WHIP; he hasn?t been terrible, just hasn?t gotten any support whatsoever.

3) Cubs 4, Cardinals 0? Kyle Hendricks threw an 81-pitch complete game, the fewest pitches in a complete game since Aaron Cook in 2012.

2) Giants 12, Reds 11 (11)? Cincinnati led 8-0 in 3rd inning, 11-7 in 8th inning but lost, day after splitting pair of 1-0 games in New York. Stephen Vogt went 3-3 with three runs scored for SF, in a game he didn?t enter until the fifth inning.

1) The governor of Montana signed a sports betting bill this week, the first state this year to pass a sports betting bill. Tennessee will also have sports betting soon; governors in Iowa, Indiana have similar bills on their desks.

Montana expects to have their system up for the NFL season.

Western Conference Semifinals ? Game 3 (Warriors lead 2-0)

Golden State at Houston (ABC, 8:35 p.m. ET)

Many pundits believed that this could be the year that the Rockets finally get over the hump and defeat the Warriors. After back-to-back wins by Golden State at home, Houston faces a 0-2 hole and knows that Saturday?s Game 3 at the Toyota Center is a must-win situation.

After losing a tightly contested 104-100 decision in Game 1 on Saturday, the Rockets came out flat on Tuesday and suffered a 115-109 setback in Game 2.

NBA expert Tony Mejia believes Chris Paul and James Harden have to find the right balance to keep the Warriors from getting too comfortable on the defensive end since isolations can make Houston easier to guard and can lead to stagnant play due to lack of ball movement.

?In attempting to get Harden going, Houston hasn?t done Paul any favors in terms of helping him find a rhythm as a shooter or playmaker. The All-Star point guard who was brought in to take some of the pressure off Harden in order to keep him fresher, but he?s shooting 27 percent from 3-point range this postseason (11-for-41) while averaging just six assists and 4.7 turnovers per game. Even if Harden wasn?t dealing with an eye issue, he?d need more help than he?s been getting. It might be time for Mike D?Antoni to let Paul run the offense and let Harden play decoy since it might help other Rockets get going at home. The first quarter will be telling, especially with Clint Capela expected to remain in the lineup despite being such a liability in Oakland against the ?Hamptons Five? that Steve Kerr is riding as his primary group. We might see Danuel House and Austin Rivers replace Capela if the Rockets look to match up by going small, which could lead to even more 3-pointers flying, so keep that in mind for totals purposes.?

The eye issues for Harden aren?t expected to be an issue at least that?s what the oddsmakers believe. After catching +6 and +5 in two games at Golden State, the Rockets are listed as -3 ?-point home favorites for Game 3.

The nine-point swing from Oakland to Houston certainly opened up my eyes and going back to the 2015 NBA Playoffs, the Rockets haven?t been favored by more than 2 ?-points over the Warriors in their last three postseason matchups. Is the line telling us that Houston?s the play?

Houston went 31-10 in the regular season in front of their fans and 3-0 in the first round of the playoffs against Utah. For our purposes, Houston has gone 25-17-2 against the spread and that includes a 2-1 mark in the postseason versus the Jazz.

Despite being the reigning two-time defending champions, Golden State was an underdog seven times this season and it went 3-4 SU and 4-3 ATS. The Warriors did close the season with three consecutive wins and four straight covers in this role.

Golden State went 3-0 on the road in the first round against the Clippers while covering two of those games. In the first meeting (Game 3) at the Staples Center, the Warriors put on a display and captured a 27-point win (132-105) while taking the crowd out of the game quickly.

Was it a coincidence or a trend? Kevin Rogers of VegasInsider.com dug up a solid nugget on Golden State and he answered that question for us.

He said, ?The Warriors have fared well in Game 3?s of a playoff series since 2017, compiling an 8-1 record both SU and ATS. That includes a 7-1 SU and ATS record away from Oracle Arena. The only defeat in this stretch came at New Orleans last season in the second round, 119-100 as five-point favorites. In three Game 3?s against Houston in the postseason dating back to 2015, the Warriors are 2-1 both SU and ATS, including a 115-80 rout of the Rockets in the 2015 conference finals as a short underdog. Houston and Golden State have split eight playoff games at Toyota Center since 2015, while the underdog has covered five times.?

After watching Game 1 easily go ?under? (224), bettors chasing the ?over? in Game 2 (222) caught a big break with a 67-point fourth quarter and 27 of those were posted in the final three minutes. Total players have certainly seen that movie before and the opening number of 222 for Game 3 has held steady as of Saturday morning.

Houston watched the ?under? go 2-0-1 at home in the first round versus the Jazz and those results could be overlooked since Utah (93.6 PPG) couldn?t buy a shot on the road. In last year?s Western Conference Finals versus the Warriors, the ?under? went 3-1 in the four games. Houston averaged 119.5 points per game in its two wins but just 99 PPG in the losses. Golden State has watched the ?under? go 9-3 in its last 12 road playoff games.

It?s rare to see teams get three days off in the middle of a playoff series and Houston actually struggled in these spots this season. The Rockets went 1-2 when playing on three plus days of rest and the offense only averaged 105.7 points per game. Meanwhile, the Warriors were 2-0 in these situations and they averaged a blistering 133 PPG.

Sticking with other trends, Houston owned an 11-5 record on Saturday this season while Golden State was 9-4. For those of you following the NBA this season, you?re probably aware of ABC?s primetime coverage on Saturday. They had eight nationally televised games and Houston and Golden State were a participant in seven of them. The Rockets went 2-1 while the Warriors went 4-1 and the loss came on Feb. 23 at home to the Rockets (118-112). The ?under? cashed in that game and the low side was 6-1 in the seven contests involving the pair.

Considering Golden State can essentially end Houston?s hopes with a victory, VI?s Mejia believes it?s worth thinking ahead entering such a defining game.

?The Warriors can really send a message with a victory here since it would put the Rockets in a massive hole while dispelling all talk of the two-time defending champs being vulnerable. The series price opened at -225 and is now at -700, so the only series future bet worth making would be to take a shot at the Rockets +500 if you believe they?re capable of getting back in the series by winning on Saturday night,? Mejia said. ?There?s no way Golden State is losing four straight games, so this might be the spot to get in on the Dubs as the West champ at -400 or NBA champ at -200 considering Houston really appeared to be its biggest threat in preventing their threepeat bid. It?s hard to imagine Denver or Portland pulling off an upset in the conference finals, while the East representative will have walked through some serious flames in reaching June before encountering their biggest challenge.?

Mejia added, ?The current futures at Westgate involving the Warriors winning the West and the NBA title are the same as they were entering the playoffs, and I can?t imagine you?re going to find better odds going forward if Golden State prevails here and you already failed to get in just after the lost Game 5 at home against the Clippers.?

The pair will meet again from Houston on Monday in Game 4.

NBA Game 3 Preview - Golden State Warriors at Houston Rockets

If the Houston Rockets plan on giving the Golden State Warriors a run for their money in the Western Conference Semifinals, they better start now. The Warriors have a 2-0 lead as the series shifts to Houston, where the Rockets are in a must-win position.

Houston is the favorite to capture this matchup and claw back into the series, but the spread isn?t huge. Golden State has the talent to win either at home or on the road and would love to put a vice grip on this series with another victory.

The stakes don?t get too much bigger than this, as the Rockets have been looking forward to this playoff rematch for a year and don?t want to go out meekly. Houston will have a raucous home crowd behind it, which could help tilt this game in its favor in NBA odds.

This NBA basketball game between the Golden State Warriors and Houston Rockets will be held at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas at 8:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, May 4th, 2019. The game will be nationally televised on ABC.

We'll have NBA basketball odds at BookMaker.eu available for every game of the 2019 NBA season.

Odds Analysis

The Rockets were the underdogs in the first two games of this series but have been listed as the 3.5-point favorite to claim Game 3. Houston has its back against the wall and is the -168 favorite to emerge victorious on the moneyline, with Golden State listed at +147 to pull the mini upset. The scoring total is listed at 219.5 points.

The ?over? hit last time out because of some late free throws, while the Warriors barely covered in NBA betting lines.

Last Time Out

Kevin Durant scored 29 points to lead a balanced effort as the Warriors took an early nine-point lead and then held off the Rockets the rest of the way for the 115-109 win. The game was close throughout but Houston was never quite able to get over the hump, as Durant and the rest of the elite scorers for Golden State made big shot after big shot.

The Warriors shot 46.2 percent from the field and 30 percent from three-point range. Stephen Curry added 20 points and five assists while Klay Thompson had 21 points and played great defense. Rockets star James Harden had 29 points, six rebounds and four assists. Austin Rivers had a nice showing off the bench for the Rockets, scoring 14 points in 24 minutes.

Injury Report

Harden got his eye scratched early in Game 2 and it clearly affected him the rest of the way as the MVP candidate was squinting and wiping it throughout. Harden went to an eye doctor when the team arrived back in Houston, according to ESPN, but he is not expected to be affected by any vision problems in Game 3.

Harden was hesitant to shoot from the outside at times in Game 2 after the injury and it?s integral that he is full strength in this one. Curry suffered a dislocated finger early in Game 2 as well but he returned to the game with tape on it and didn?t seem too affected.

Keep an eye on the status of these two superstars because any issues during Game 3 would be a huge development.

Free NBA ATS Picks

The Rockets aren?t good enough to win this series, but they will put everything into winning Game 3 and will be able to do so. Houston should also be able to cover the spread as the margin of victory in this one may be a slight surprise.

Harden hasn?t been hitting on all cylinders yet in this series but look for him to have a solid performance and he will get help from Rivers, Chris Paul and Eric Gordon in NBA gambling.

NBA ATS Pick: Houston Rockets 117, Golden State Warriors 109

HOUSTON (AP) James Harden made a big 3-pointer in overtime and scored 41 points, and the Houston Rockets outlasted the Golden State Warriors 126-121 on Saturday night to cut the deficit in the Western Conference semifinals to 2-1.

A layup by P.J. Tucker put Houston up by three with about 2 minutes left and the Warriors missed shots on their next two possessions. That set up the 3-pointer by Harden with 49 seconds left that made it 124-118.

Kevin Durant made three free throws after that, but Harden added a layup to stretch the lead. Stephen Curry, who dislocated a finger in Game 2, missed a wide-open layup and Harden grabbed the rebound to secure Houston's victory.

The Rockets withstood a 46-point performance from Durant and late surge by the Warriors to avoid falling into a 3-0 hole in the best-of-seven series.

Game 4 is Monday night in Houston.

Harden led the team despite recovering from injuries to both eyes he sustained in Game 2 when he was hit in the face by Draymond Green. He was feeling better on Saturday, but both eyes remained bloody red in spots.

''That's James. That's what he does,'' Houston coach Mike D'Antoni said.

Eric Gordon added a playoff career-high 30 points with a playoff-best seven 3-pointers for Houston.

''We got outplayed. I thought Houston played really well. They deserved to win,'' Warriors coach Steve Kerr said.

Curry finished with 17 points on 7-for-23 shooting after missing two layups in overtime. Green added 19 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists for the Warriors.

Houston was clinging to a one-point lead when Iguodala's 3-pointer put Golden State up 112-110 with 45 seconds remaining in the fourth. Harden made two free throws a few seconds after that to tie it and Durant missed a jump shot on the other end to give Houston a chance to win it in regulation.

Chris Paul was in the lane when Klay Thompson forced a jump ball. Harden got the ball but didn't have time to get a shot off before the buzzer to send it to overtime.

A dunk by Durant cut Houston's lead to one midway through the fourth quarter, but Austin Rivers hit a 3-pointer for Houston soon after that to leave the Rockets up 108-104.

The Warriors regained the lead with about 3 1/2 minutes to go after five straight points by Thompson made it 109-108. But Paul put Houston back on top with two free throws soon after that.

The Warriors used a 15-2 run at the end of the third quarter and the beginning of the fourth to take a 94-93 lead with about 10 minutes remaining. Durant was unstoppable in that stretch, scoring all 10 of Golden State's points to start the fourth.

Tucker, Houston's defensive stopper who had been on the bench with four fouls, re-entered the game to try and help slow Durant down.

Durant cooled off after that, but Iguodala and Thompson both made 3-pointers soon after that and the Warriors remained up by a point with about eight minutes left in the fourth.

The Rockets were up by nine at halftime, and Harden and Paul made 3-pointers on consecutive possessions in the third to push the lead to 72-61.

A 3-pointer by Curry cut Houston's lead to seven later in the period before Houston used an 8-2 spurt to extend it to 83-70 with about 3 minutes left in the quarter.

Houston had a 12-point lead after a dunk by Clint Capela with less than a minute left in the third. Golden State scored the last five points of the quarter, with a 3 from Green, to get within 91-84 entering the fourth.

Houston got out to a much better start on Saturday night after being outscored 57-39 in the opening quarter of the first two games and the Rockets only trailed by one entering the second.

They used a 33-point second quarter, powered by 13 points from Gordon, to take a 58-49 lead into halftime.

Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

Since 2001, the longest on-base streaks in MLB:

63? Orlando Cabrera

57? Barry Bonds

56? Ryan Klesko

53? Alex Rodriguez

52? Shin-Soo Choo, Kevin Millar

50? Gary Sheffield

**********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday??..

13) Rockets 126, Warriors 121 OT? Houston?s bench was +29 in 62:00; starting guards Harden/Gordon were 12-27 on the arc, combined for 71 points. Rockets were +20 on the boards.

Durant scored 46 in a losing cause; Curry was 7-23 from floor. Golden State?s bench took a total of six shots the whole game. Warriors still lead series, 2-1.

12) Portland 140, Denver 137, 4OT?s (Friday night)

? Will Barton scored 22 points for Denver; he didn?t score in the first half.
? Nikola Jokic played 65:00, the most ever by a 7-footer in a playoff game.
? Kanter played 56:00, Lillard 58:00, McCollum 60:00 for Portland.
? Portland was 24-28 on the foul line; Denver 14-20.
? Denver?s bench was -21 in 84:00; Portland?s was -2 in 75:00.
? Rodney Hood?s 3-pointer with 0:17.8 left was the game-winner.
? Game 4 is Sunday night, fairly quick turnaround in the playoffs.

11) Miami Marlins fired president of business operations Chip Bowers this week, because it is his fault that Derek Jeter is doing a cruddy job running the franchise.

No one goes to the games, because the team is dreadful; not that many people went when they had the best outfield in baseball (Jeter traded them all away).

10) Friday night in Cincinnati, Giants trailed 8-0 after three innings; from 1957 to 2018, teams trailing by exactly eight runs entering the 4th inning were 6-412.

Giants won 12-11 in 11 innings, so make that 7-412.

9) Dodgers 7, Padres 6? LA wins for second night in a row in last inning; since the start of the 2011 season, Dodgers are 101-51 against San Diego.

8) Brewers 4, Mets 3 (18)? Mets scored a run in top of 18th, then they walked three batters in row in bottom of 18th, and Ryan Braun?s 6th hit of the game sent the locals home happy.

7) Baseball stuff:
? New York put P James Paxton (knee) on the IL.
? Pirates put P Jameson Taillon (elbow) on IL.
? Nationals put OF Juan Soto (back) on IL.
? Reds cut OF Matt Kemp, ate $15.5M in salary they owe him.
? Phillies DFA?d OF Aaron Altherr.

6) From Elias: Colorado?s Tyler Anderson is the first pitcher in 100+ years to give up 5+ earned runs while pitching five or fewer innings in each of his first five starts of the season. He also got sent to AAA Saturday.

5) Good news/bad news week for Monty Williams:
Good news: He got hired this week as head coach of the Phoenix Suns.

Bad news: Phoenix Suns are owned by Robert Sarver, a meddling owner whose team has made the playoffs once in 11 years (2010) since they stupidly let Mike D?Antoni leave town.

4) Chicago Bears had eight kickers in for tryouts this week; at the end of practice, with the whole team watching, each kicker tried a 43-yard FG, the length of the FG Chicago missed in their loss to the Eagles in the playoffs in January.

The eight kickers combined to go 2-8 on their FG tries. No bueno.

3) NBA shooters get fouled on only 1.66% of their 3-point shots; James Harden gets fouled on 11.5% of his 3-point shots. Big difference.

2) Red Sox 15, White Sox 2? Boston had 10 consecutive hits in third inning, one short of the MLB record (Colorado in 2010).

1) Congrats to KL Wheat, who cleaned up big-time with the Kentucky Derby Saturday; he turned a five-figure profit for the day, which is damn impressive.
