Lightning win 10th straight, Flames streak to 7th in a row
February 27, 2019
By The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) Victor Hedman scored at 3:25 of overtime and the Tampa Bay Lightning extended their winning streak to a franchise-record 10 games with a 4-3 victory over the New York Rangers on Wednesday night.

Tyler Johnson, J.T. Miller and Dan Girardi also scored for Tampa Bay, which has an NHL-leading 102 points. Nikita Kucherov added three assists to give him a league-leading 74. Andrei Vasilevskiy had 33 saves.

Jimmy Vesey had a goal and assist for the Rangers. Mika Zibanejad and Boo Nieves also scored. Alexandar Georgiev had 26 saves, including stopping Hedman on a breakaway earlier in overtime.

FLAMES 2, DEVILS 1

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Johnny Gaudreau set up two second-period goals and Western Conference-leading Calgary extended its season-high winning streak to seven games with a victory over New Jersey.

Elias Lindholm and Mark Giordano scored for the Flames, who have points in eight straight games. David Rittich made 19 saves in improving to 22-5-5.

Kevin Rooney scored a short-handed goal for the Devils. Mackenzie Blackwood, who spent the last three weeks in the minor leagues, was outstanding in making 33 saves in his return to the NHL.

The game was delayed about 10 minutes early in the third period after Devils defenseman Mirco Mueller crashed into the end boards on a rush and had to be taken on the ice on a stretcher. He moved his legs and gave a thumbs-up to fans.

MAPLE LEAFS 6, OILERS 2

TORONTO (AP) - Andreas Johnsson scored twice during Toronto's four-goal outburst in a seven-minute stretch to open the second period and the Maple Leafs cruised past Edmonton.

Mitch Marner added a goal and two assists, while John Tavares, William Nylander and Patrick Marleau all had a goal and an assist for Toronto. Frederik Andersen made 34 saves for the Maple Leafs, who turn their attention to Thursday night when they visit the Islanders in Tavares' return to New York.

Leon Draisaitl and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored for Edmonton. Mikko Koskinen allowed four goals on 16 shots before being replaced by Anthony Stolarz, who finished with 18 saves.

Oilers star Connor McDavid returned to the lineup after serving his two-game suspension for a hit to the head on Islanders defenseman Nick Leddy last week.

AVALANCHE 3, CANUCKS 2, SO

DENVER (AP) - Carl Soderberg scored in the sixth round of the shootout, Semyon Varlamov came up with big saves all night long and Colorado beat Vancouver.

Soderberg knocked in the winner off the glove of Jacob Markstrom as the Avalanche improved to 2-12 in games beyond regulation. Varlamov made 30 saves through overtime and five more in the shootout.

Mikko Rantanen had a goal and Nathan MacKinnon added his 33rd goal of the season to tie captain Gabriel Landeskog for the team lead. The Avalanche have gone 5-0-1 over their last six games to climb back into the playoff chase.

Josh Leivo tied the game at 2 with 3:02 remaining in regulation on a wrist shot. Antoine Roussel also scored for the Canucks.

BLACKHAWKS 4, DUCKS 3

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Patrick Kane scored with 16.1 seconds remaining on an odd-man rush and the Chicago Blackhawks rallied for a 4-3 victory over the Anaheim Ducks on Wednesday night.

Alex DeBrincat scored two goals, Artem Anisimov had a short-handed goal and Corey Crawford made 29 saves as the Blackhawks snapped a two-game losing streak.

Devin Shore, Carter Rowney and Troy Terry scored for Anaheim, which has dropped its last four. Miller stopped 31 shots.

Wednesday?s 6-pack

Odds for the Honda Classic this week:

5-1? Justin Thomas

10-1? Rickie Fowler, Brooks Koepka

16-1? Sergio Garcia, Adam Scott

18-1? Gary Woodland

20-1? Webb Simpson, Cameron Smith

33-1? Daniel Berger, Emiliano Grillo, Luke List

Quote of the Day
?I guess he cooked some chicken and didn?t know how to cook or something. He was throwing up all night. So we?re going to have to teach him how to cook so he doesn?t miss any more games.?
Mets? manager Mickey Callaway, on OF Brandon Nimmo

Thursday?s quiz
Which two NBA teams has Eric Musselman coached?

Wednesday?s quiz
Buzz Williams is the basketball coach at Virginia Tech; he left Marquette to coach in Blacksburg.

Tuesday?s quiz
Max Scherzer broke into the major leagues with the Diamondbacks.

Thursday?s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud?..
13) Here?s a question for us to consider; if Zion Williamson doesn?t play anymore this season. where do you seed Duke in the NCAA?s? How good are the Blue Devils without him?

I don?t have an answer to this, other than if he is indeed out for the year, Duke won?t say so before Selection Sunday, because that would diminish their seeding, maybe a couple of lines?

12) Virginia Tech 77, Duke 72? There is a kid on Duke who has missed 28 3-pointers in a row, and his 3-point %age (26.5%) is still better than Duke?s PG, Tre Jones (24.6%). Blue Devils are shooting 29.6% on the arc in conference games, 30.7% for the season.

11) Philadelphia Eagles are not franchise-tagging QB Nick Foles; he will be become a free agent, and I?m guessing a really highly sought-after one.

10) Villanova 67, Marquette 61? Two best teams in Big East hooked up here; chances are they?ll meet again on March 16, in Big East tournament final. Kid named Samuels on Villanova was averaging four points a game; he had 29 points in this one.

9) Tennessee 73, Ole Miss 71? Vols are tied with Kentucky/LSU atop the SEC; they host the Wildcats in Knoxville Saturday.

8) Baylor 84, Texas 83 OT? Horrific loss for Longhorns, who led by 19 with 14:56 left to play; leading 83-82, they turned ball over on an inbounds play with 0:07 left. Not good.

7) Trailblazers 97, Celtics 92? Boston is 1-8 vs spread if they played the night before.

6) West Virginia 104, TCU 96, 3OT? These teams battled it out for 55:00 Tuesday night and the Horned Frogs went home with a costly loss. West Virginia is having a lousy season but Derek Culver is developing into a pretty good player- he had 22 points, 21 rebounds in this game.

5) Iowa basketball coach Fran McCaffery got suspended for two games after he berated a ref after the Hawkeyes? 90-70 loss at Ohio State Tuesday. If you?re going to berate a ref and curse him out multiple times, better not to do it where media people can hear you.

4) Was wondering about this today so I looked it up; Wayne Gretzky is the NHL?s all-time leader in empty net goals, with 56.

Marion Hossa is 2nd on this list, with 40, followed by Mario Lemieux and Alex Ovechkin, with 33 each.

3) Heat 126, Warriors 125? Dwyane Wade banked in the game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer after his first shot was blocked. Miami is a half-game out of the last playoff spot in the East.

2) On Tuesday, Mets? OF Brandon Nimmo ate undercooked chicken that he cooked himself and got sick- the team sent him home from their game on Wednesday. Mets? plan to teach him how to cook. Ordering out would also seem to be a good idea.

Oy.

1) 80-year old Bobby Knoop retired this week as a coach/instructor with the Angels; he was in baseball for 53 years, playing nine years in the major leagues, mostly in Anaheim. He made one All-Star Game and won three Golden Gloves.

Why bring this up? Because when I was a kid playing in Little League, a long, long time ago, I used a baseball glove signed by Bobby Knoop. I sucked at baseball, but wasn?t a bad fielder at least, and that glove was awesome. So thank you Bobby Knoop, and enjoy your retirement!!!

In the Crease - Week 23
Joe Williams

Johnny T Back To The Island

The New York Islanders host the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday night at the Uniondale Coliseum, and it should be looked at as a key Eastern Conference showdown between two top powers with playoff implications. However, all eyes will be focused on John Tavares, who makes his first return to New York after spurning the team in free agency to go play in his hometown of Toronto instead. Fans felt betrayed, and have even taken to social media to post asinine videos which, for all intents and purposes, are likely ignored by the star. However, the fans will have a voice inside the arena when Tavares skates against the team, and things could get really interesting when the organization shows a video tribute reflecting on Tavares' nine years in New York.

As far as the game itself is concerned, the Leafs are playing in the fourth game of a 4-in-6 (four games in six days) situation. In the fourth game they have excelled in the situation, going 8-0 in the past eight tries. They're also 6-0 in the past six road games against a team with a winning home mark, and 6-2 overall in the past eight against winning sides. For the Isles, they're 8-2 across the past 10 home games, while going 22-10 in the past 32 games overall. Toronto has won four of the past five in this series, although the home team is 6-2 in the past eight meetings, and the favorite has hit in six of the past seven. The 'over' is 10-2 in the past 12 meetings in New York, and 39-19-2 in the past 60 meetings overall.

Looking Ahead

Thursday, Feb. 28

Tampa Bay at Boston:
The Lightning have rolled up 41 victories in the past 52 games overall, and they're 41-11 in the past 52 games as a favorite, too. Boston could have an advantage facing the Lightning since Tampa just played last night, as they're 5-1 in the past six games playing on no rest. They have also won 39 of the past 56 games on the road, too. For the Bruins, they have won eight of the past nine games overall, while going 4-0 in the past four working on one day of rest. They have also tossed up 44 wins in the past 62 at home, but they're just 2-5 in the past seven against Eastern Confernce foes. Tampa is 9-29-3 in the past 41 trips to Boston, but they're 5-0 in the past five meetings in this series. The favorite is also 25-11 in the past 36. The under is 3-1-1 in the past five battles in Beantown, while the under is 7-2-2 in the past 11 in the series.

Vancouver at Arizona:
The Canucks limp into Arizona with just one win in the past five outings, while going 2-5 in the past seven against Western Conference foes, too. They're also 1-4 in the past five road contests against teams with a losing overall mark. Arizona has actually rattled off four wins in a row, and they're 6-0 in the past six against losing teams. They have also come away with victories in four of the past five at home. Vancouver has won just once in the past six in this series, and they're 1-4 in the past five trips to Arizona. The under is 13-2-1 in the past 16 skates in Glendale, too.

Friday, March 1

Washington at N.Y. Islanders:
The Islanders have another emotional battle on Friday night, as the defending Stanley Cup champs pay a visit to their former coach, Barry Trotz, who has done wonders with the Isles. The Caps were skidding around the All-Star break, but they're 4-1 in the past five overall. They're also 19-8 in the past 27 inside the Eastern Conference. New York has won just eight of the past 10 games at home, while going 9-1 in the past 10 when working on no rest. They're also 7-1 in the past eight in the third game of a 3-in-4 (three games in four days) situation. The 'under' is also 7-3-1 in the past 11 meetings in New York.

Colorado at San Jose:
The Avalanche are trying to stay in the Western Conference playoff picture, while the Sharks are trying to win a championship. They built up their roster at the trade deadline, and look like one of the four strongest teams out west. Colorado has owned the west lately, going 5-0 in the past five against Western Conference teams. They're also 5-1 in the past six overall, and 4-1 in the past five against winning teams. San Jose is 8-2 in the past 10 at home, while going 16-7 in the past 23 overall. SAP Center has been a house of horrors for Colorado over the years, as the Avalanche are just 4-22 in the past 26 trips to Silicon Valley. The 'over' is a solid 6-0-1 in the past seven in San Jose, and 15-5-2 in the past 22 meetings overall.

Saturday, March 2

Buffalo at Toronto:
The Maple Leafs have won both previous meetings, but it hasn't been easy. The last meeting was a 5-3 win in Toronto on Feb. 25, but it was a late empty-net goal that made it look worse than it was. The Sabres also fell on home ice by a 4-3 score in overtime back on Dec. 4 in the first meeting. In the past eight meetings the 'over' has connected in seven games, and Toronto has outscored Buffalo by a 30-25 margin.

Ottawa at Tampa Bay:
This might be the highest line we've seen all season, perhaps in excess of -400. Ottawa sold off all of their expensive assets at the trade deadline and they're turning it over to the kids. In their first game after selling off on Monday, they were smashed 7-2 in Washington. Tampa Bay won their franchise record 10th consecutive game on Wednesday night at N.Y. Rangers, and they're looking like the Golden State Warriors of hockey right now.

Minnesota at Calgary:
The Wild and Flames tangle in Calgary, and the Pacific leaders look to stay hot. Calgary has won the first two meetings this season, but its been a dogfight. They won 2-1 in St. Paul on Dec. 15, and 2-0 in Calgary on Dec. 6. In fact, the 'under' has cashed in four straight meetings in this series. Three of the past four in this series have resulted in one-goal games, and seven of the past nine contests have been decided by one goal. That's news puck-line bettors need to know.

Sunday, March 3

Chicago at San Jose:
The Blackhawks are trying to stay afloat in the chase for a playoff spot out west, but a trip to San Jose is a tall order if they want points. These teams have met just once, with San Jose embarrassing Chicago in the Windy City by a 7-3 score back on Dec. 16. San Jose has won three straight in this series, and the 'over' has connected in three in a row. The home team has also won five of the past seven in this series.

Islanders spoil Tavares' return to NY in 6-1 win over Leafs
February 28, 2019
By The Associated Press

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) Casey Cizikas scored twice and the New York Islanders beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 6-1 Thursday night in former captain John Tavares' first time back as a visiting player.

Anthony Beauvillier, Anders Lee and Valtteri Filppula also scored for the Islanders, who had lost three of their last four. Robin Lehner stopped 34 shots to help New York move two points ahead of Washington atop the Metropolitan Division one night before hosting the Capitals. The Islanders' 81 points are one more than they had all of last season.

Islanders fans, vocal on social media about their lingering displeasure with Tavares' departure via free agency last summer after he repeatedly said he wanted to stay, booed loudly when Tavares and the Maple Leafs hit the ice for pregame warmups, and when they came back out for the start of each period. They also serenaded the No. 1 overall pick in 2009 with choruses of ''We Don't Need You!'' and other derisive chants throughout the game, including around a video tribute midway through the first period.

Zach Hyman scored for the Maple Leafs, who had won three straight.

BRUINS 4, LIGHTNING 1

BOSTON (AP) - The Bruins scored three times in less than three minutes in the third period and snapped Eastern Conference-leading Tampa Bay's franchise-best 10-game winning streak.

Jake DeBrusk, Noel Acciari, Patrice Bergeron and Brad Marchand all had goals for the Bruins (38-17-9), who have won nine of their last 10 games and earned at least one point in 15 straight.

The game was the first in NHL history in which teams faced off while each owning simultaneous point streaks of 14 or more contests.

A goal by Tampa Bay's Anthony Cirelli's with 7:08 remaining prevented the Lightning (49-12-4) from being shut out for the first time since losing 1-0 in overtime to St. Louis on Feb. 7.

COYOTES 5, CANUCKS 2

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Brad Richardson scored four goals to power the Arizona Coyotes to their fifth straight victory.

Alex Galchenyuk also scored for the Coyotes, who completed a four-game season sweep of the Canucks. Vinnie Hinostroza and Richard Panik had three assists apiece - all on goals by Richardson - and Oliver Ekman-Larsson had two assists.

Richardson, who has a single-season career-high 16 goals, scored twice in the first period and completed his second career hat trick in the second period after a deft drop pass from Richard Panik. He tipped in a pass from Hinostroza for his final goal at 8:03 of the third period. It was the Coyotes' first four-goal game since Keith Tkachuk did it on March 20, 1997.

Tanner Pearson and Antoine Roussel scored for the Canucks, who have lost five of six.

BLUE JACKETS 4, FLYERS 3, OT

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Seth Jones scored 4:27 into overtime, lifting Columbus past Philadelphia.

As the back-and-forth extra period wound down, Artemi Panarin wove his way through the defense and fed Jones, who knocked the winner past Brian Elliott. Jones got his third overtime goal this season and set a franchise record with the seventh of his Blue Jackets career.

Panarin, Oliver Bjorkstrand and Scott Harrington also scored for the Blue Jackets, who rebounded from a loss Tuesday night to Pittsburgh and hopped over the idle Penguins and Carolina Hurricanes into third place in the Metropolitan Division. Sergei Bobrovsky made 28 saves.

Travis Sanheim had two goals, Jakub Voracek also scored and Elliott had 36 saves as his two-game winning streak came to an end. Elliott is the seventh goalie used by Philadelphia this season, and the Flyers will set an NHL record when recently acquired Cam Talbot starts Saturday at New Jersey to raise that number to eight.

OILERS 4, SENATORS 2

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) - Connor McDavid scored a slick goal, Mikko Koskinen made 35 saves and Edmonton Oilers beat league-worst Ottawa.

Sam Gagner, Colby Cave and Zack Kassian also scored for the Oilers, who stopped a two-game skid.

Chris Tierney and Mark Borowiecki scored for the Senators, who lost their sixth straight, and Craig Anderson stopped 22 shots in his ninth straight defeat.

It was the first home game for Ottawa since Mark Stone was traded to Vegas, but thanks to McDavid the Senators had one of their biggest crowds of the season.

Friday?s List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here?..

13) Bryce Harper signs with the Phillies for 13 years, $330M, which works out to $156,695.16 per game, for every game the Phillies play thru 2031. All guaranteed money.

Keep in mind the National League will probably have the DH starting in 2022, so as Harper gets older, he can take ?days off? but still have his bat in the lineup.

California?s state income tax, at its highest level is over 12%, Pennsylvania has a flat 3% income tax, which may help explain this decision. Giants made a 12-year, $310 million offer, which was actually a decent amount less than the Phillies? offer, after taxes.

12) MLB Network was showing spring training games Thursday afternoon, but the games quickly got the hook once Harper?s signing was announced. Not sure I needed to hear four hours of people discussing Harper signing his contract. I don?t give a rat?s ass about anything Bob Costas says.

If you play fantasy baseball, not the best day to have Nick Williams on your team, like I do. The 25-year old OF loses his starting job now that Harper is in Philly.

Funny thing, Phillies played split squad games Thursday, and Williams wasn?t in either game, which at 1pm struck me as odd. At 3:00, it made a lot more sense.

Please trade Nick Williams!!!!! (Baltimore, Miami, Arizona???)

11) Jason Witten came out of retirement and will play for the Cowboys again next season, which opens up a spot in ESPN?s Monday Night Football booth.

10) Tommy John missed the 1975 season after he had the original ?Tommy John surgery? on his elbow. Here are his career stats, before and after the surgery:

Before: 12 years, 124-106. 318 starts, one All-Star Game
After: 14 years, 164-125, 382 starts, three All-Star Games

He pitched in the major leagues until he was 46 years old.

9) Kyler Murray made a lot of money at the NFL Combine Thursday, when he was measured at just over 5-10, and weighed in at 207 pounds. Pretty much the same size as Russell Wilson. he is going to be a top-10 draft pick in April.

8) Raiders are now expected to play home games in Oakland next season, with the plan being to move into their new dome in Las Vegas in 2020.

7) Upsets of the night in college basketball:
? California (+13.5) 76, Washington 73
? North Dakota (+9.5) 88, Fort Wayne 82
? Florida Atlantic (+9) 60, North Texas
? Elon (+7.5) 73, James Madison 58
? Marshall (+7) 90, Louisiana Tech 79
? Xavier (+5) 84, St John?s 73

6) If you live in the Albany area, the 3rd-oldest coin/jewelry store in America is on Wolf Road in Colonie, kind of near Ted?s Fish Fry. Ferris Coin & Jewelry is a pretty cool place; they?ve been in business since 1930. I have some old $2 bills that I thought might be valuable (they?re not), but the people in there were very nice and they answered all my questions.

5) Actor Mahershala Ali, who won an Academy Award for the movie Green Book last weekend, played basketball in college at Saint Mary?s; he averaged 7 points a game as a senior, back when he was known as Ali Gilmore.

4) Something to think about two weeks from now: over last four years, Kentucky is 12-0 in the SEC basketball tournament, with nine wins by 10+ points.

In the four tournament finals, Wildcats started 19 different players. Isaiah Briscoe was only guy to start in two of them.

3) Johnny Manziel got kicked out of the CFL; they didn?t say why. Manziel had been playing for the Montreal Alouettes, who are coached by former Packers? coach Mike Sherman. Sherman?s son-in-law is Zac Taylor, the Cincinnati Bengals? new coach.

2) Kid on Xavier made a foul line jumper against St John?s last night, and it dawned on me; you almost never see that shot taken anymore. Everything is layups and 3?s; mid-range jumpers are frowned upon by the analytics people.

1) Indiana University (PA) started the last week of the regular season ranked No. 2 in the country in Division II, but when they showed up at Edinboro State for their game Wednesday, they realized they had made the 100+-mile trip without an important thing- their uniforms.

I put myself thru college as student manager of a D-III basketball team; I shudder to think of the grief their manager(s) took for this mistake. IUP won 87-59, much to the manager?(s) relief, but guaranteed they?ll be obsessive about not forgetting things the rest of the season.

Indiana, PA by the way, is the Christmas Tree Capital of the World; when I was in college, we played in their Christmas tournament, the Christmas Tree Classic. Next town over from Indiana is Punxatawney, where the ground hog sees (or doesn?t see) his shadow every February 2.

Grand Salami - February

The Grand Salami in pro hockey is decided by adding up all the goals scored in every game scheduled for that particular day. You can wager on 'over' or 'under' the Grand Salami total. The total is set by adding up all listed 'over/under' odds for each game on that particular day.

Note: The Grand Salami will have no action if any game is suspended or cancelled before the regulation time of three twenty minute periods. Also, regardless of the number of goals scored during the shoot out portion of the overtime, the final scored recorded for the game will give the winning team on more goal than its opponent based on the score at the end of regulation time.

*The majority of sportsbooks do not put out a total on the Grand Salami when there is only one game on the card. For tracking purposes, we will continue to show the 'over/under' for goals and combined goals scored on days with just one game.

Blackhawks' red-hot Over run burning bookies, and this weekend's NHL odds and best bets
Monty Andrews

Wins don't get more satisfying than the one the New York Islanders produced against John Tavares and the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday night, and recent trends suggest they'll be just as difficult to wrangle on Friday as they host Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals.

That Metropolitan Division showdown is one of a handful of marquee games on the weekend NHL slate, including Chicago bringing an incredible Over streak into Los Angeles, and Patrik Laine looking to hit the scoresheet against the only team that has held him without a point.

Here are the must-read notes and best bets for the NHL odds this weekend.

WHAT AN ENCORE

The Islanders have not only been one of the feel-good stories of the season - excelling despite losing Tavares in the off-season ? but bettors have made a mint on their New York bets, with the Isles having earned a whopping 13.85 units on the year.

As they prepare to welcome the defending Stanley Cup champions to Barclays Center, it's worth noting that the Islanders have gone an incredible 9-1 SU in their past 10 games on zero days' rest. Not only that, but New York has outscored the opposition by a 36-13 margin in that span, including a 2-0 win in Washington back on Jan. 18.

FILLIN' THE NETS

It can be difficult to know just how long a hot or cold streak will last but bettors who have stuck with the Chicago Blackhawks on the Over have been handsomely rewarded for a very long time. Chicago puts a long list of totals trends on the line this weekend with visits to Los Angeles on Saturday and San Jose on Sunday.

The Blackhawks head to California having gone a red-hot 38-13-3 O/U in their previous 54 road games, and an unbelievable 21-4-2 in its past 27 versus teams with losing records. The Kings are 13-3 O/U in their past 16 outings, while the Sharks and Hawks have combined for 23 goals in their last three meetings.

ALSO FILLIN' THE NETS

The Senators visit the Lightning on Saturday in a meeting between 1992 expansion cousins. The teams are a whopping 53 points apart in the standings with six weeks remaining in the regular-season schedule, so picking the Lightning to win outright at home ? where they're 26-5-2 SU ? is not exactly a reach. The Over also looks like the superior play here, with the teams having surpassed the number in each of their previous six meetings. They've combined for seven or more goals in all six of those contests.

POINT TIME FOR PATRIK?

The most intriguing player prop Sunday might just belong to Winnipeg Jets forward Patrik Laine, who leads his club into Columbus for a date with the re-armed Blue Jackets. Laine has put a lengthy goal drought behind him with four goals over his previous three games entering Friday but has been held without a point in all five career meetings with Columbus ? the only team against whom he has yet to hit the scoresheet. The Blue Jackets were one of the strongest defensive teams in the league last month, registering a 2.54 goals-against average in February that ranked sixth-best.

GOALIE PROFILE: ANDREI VASILEVSKIY, TAMPA BAY LIGHTNING

Vasilevskiy is doing his best to make the Vezina Trophy battle interesting. While it appears as if New York Islanders veteran Robin Lehner has the upper-hand, bettors shouldn't discount the Lightning's sensational netminder, who strengthened his resume with a rock-solid February during which he went 9-0-2 with a 1.57 goals-against average, a .950 save percentage and three shutouts. Vasilevskiy now ranks fifth in the league in goals against average (2.28) and second in save percentage (.930), not far behind Lehner in either category. He's expected to get the start Saturday when the Lightning entertain Ottawa.

INJURY UPDATE: D ERIK KARLSSON, SAN JOSE SHARKS

One of the top bluelines in the NHL will be without a key offensive contributor, with Karlsson expected to miss at least the rest of the week with a groin injury suffered in the second period of Tuesday's loss to the Boston Bruins. It's a similar injury to the one that knocked him out of the lineup for a nine-game span earlier in the season. The Sharks play Friday versus the Colorado Avalanche before facing the Blackhawks on Sunday, and the hope is that Karlsson can return in time for their next game Thursday against the Montreal Canadiens. The Sharks are +140 to win the Pacific Division, second only to Calgary.

HAT TRICK TRENDS

? The Lightning are a monster +230 option to win the Stanley Cup championship as they continue their torrid pace. The Calgary Flames are installed at +850 to end their 30-year Cup drought, making them the team to beat in the Western Conference. The Boston Bruins (+1,000) and Toronto Maple Leafs (+1,200) round out the Top 4.

? The Detroit Red Wings own the distinction of being the worst home option in the league, at least from a betting perspective. The Red Wings have lost -8.87 units through their first 34 home games, and are coming off an 0-5 homestand capped by a humbling 8-1 loss to the Canadiens. The Avalanche are next in line at -8.20 units at home.

? Five teams remain above 25 percent on the power play as the calendar flips to March. The Lightning (surprise, surprise) own the No. 1 man-advantage unit in the league at 29.3 percent, followed by the Florida Panthers (26.7 percent) and Boston Bruins (26.5 percent). Winnipeg (25.3 percent) and San Jose (25.1 percent) round out the Top 5.
