Lightning beat Bruins 6-3, tie NHL record with 62nd win
April 6, 2019
By The Associated Press

BOSTON (AP) The Tampa Bay Lightning won their NHL record-tying 62nd game, getting a short-handed goal by Steven Stamkos during a three-goal second period in a 6-3 victory over the Boston Bruins on Saturday in the teams' regular-season finale.

Nikita Kucherov, Anthony Cirelli, Erik Cernak and Braydon Coburn also scored for Tampa Bay (62-16-4), which tied the 1995-96 Detroit Red Wings for most victories during the regular season. Third-string goalie Edward Pasquale stopped 30 shots and Tyler Johnson added an empty-netter.

Six of the wins, though, came in shootouts. The league introduced shootouts to decide ties after overtime at the start of the 2005-06 season. Before that, games ended in ties after overtime, which was brought in for regular-season games in 1983.

David Krejci, Danton Heinen and Matt Grzelcyk each had a goal for Boston (49-24-9). Tuukka Rask made 16 saves.

It was the Lightning's 30th road win, making them just the second team in league history to reach that total. The 2005-06 Red Wings had 31.

PREDATORS 5, BLACKHAWKS 2

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Viktor Arvidsson scored the go-ahead goal at 3:33 of the third period, and Nashville won its second straight Central Division title by rallying from an 0-2 deficit to beat Chicago.

The Predators, who will face Dallas in the opening round of the playoffs next week, now are assured of home-ice advantage through at least the first two rounds.

Arvidsson set the franchise record with his 34th goal of the season 22 seconds into the man advantage.

Filip Forsberg and Nick Bonino each had a goal and had an assist, and Dante Fabbro scored his first NHL goal for Nashville, which now has won five of six. Colton Sissons added an empty-netter with 2:09 left.

Pekka Rinne made 31 saves to finish 30-19-4, his eighth season with at least 30 wins.

Brendan Perlini and Drake Caggiula each scored for Chicago, which lost three of its final five.

ISLANDERS 3, CAPITALS 0

WASHINGTON (AP) - Valtteri Filppula scored twice in his return from injury, Robin Lehner stopped all 29 shots he faced and the Islanders beat Washington to clinch home-ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

Matt Martin scored an empty-net goal with 2:33 left to seal it.

Coach Barry Trotz's team came into the game against his former team needing at least one point to secure a second-place finish in the Metropolitan Division, just behind Washington. The Islanders will open the playoffs at home for the first time since 1988 against Pittsburgh.

The Capitals will face Carolina in the first round as they try to repeat as Stanley Cup champions. Backup goaltender Pheonix Copley started and made 18 saves.

BLUES 3, CANUCKS 2

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Jordan Binnington stopped both shots he faced in the shootout as St. Louis beat Vancouver, but the Blues fell a point short of first place in the Central Division.

Binnington finished with 23 saves and closed out his breakthrough season with a 24-5-1 record.

Vladimir Tarasenko and Brayden Schenn scored in regulation for the Blues. Ryan O'Reilly and David Perron converted in the tiebreaker.

Nashville won the Central Division for the second straight year with a win over Chicago. St. Louis (45-28-9) will face Winnipeg in the first round of the playoffs.

Elias Pettersson and Tanner Pearson scored for Vancouver (35-36-11). Thatcher Demko made 34 saves for the Canucks, who missed the playoffs for the fourth season in a row.

BLUE JACKETS 6, SENATORS 2

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) - Pierre-Luc Dubois scored two goals and Columbus routed Ottawa.

The Blue Jackets finished 47-31-4 and secured the second wild card in the East. They'll face the Tampa Bay Lightning in the first round of the playoffs.

Alexandre Texier, Riley Nash, Oliver Bjorkstrand and Markus Nutivaara also scored for the Blue Jackets. Joonas Korpisalo made 27 saves.

Thomas Chabot and Mikkel Boedker scored for the Senators (29-47-6). Anders Nilsson stopped 17 shots after replacing starter Craig Anderson, who was pulled midway through the first after giving up three goals on seven shots.

The Senators finished last in the NHL standings for the first time in 23 years.

HURRICANES 4, FLYERS 3

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Jordan Staal scored the go-ahead goal in the second period and Carolina hung on to beat Philadelphia for its fourth win in five games.

The Hurricanes finished in the top wild-card spot in the East, and will play the defending Stanley Cup champion Washington Capitals in the opening round of the playoffs.

Warren Foegele, Justin Faulk and Teuvo Teravainen scored in the first period for the Hurricanes.

Carolina also set a franchise record with its 22nd road win this season.

Oskar Lindblom, Travis Konecny and Sean Couturier had goals for the Flyers, who missed the playoffs.

SABRES 7, RED WINGS 1

DETROIT (AP) - Jeff Skinner scored twice to reach the 40-goal mark for the first time in his career and Buffalo beat Detroit in the season finale for both teams.

Rookie defenseman Rasmus Dahlin had a goal and an assist, and Sam Reinhart, Conor Sheary, Zemgus Girgensons and Brandon Montour scored for Buffalo. Linus Ullmark made 23 saves.

Anthony Mantha scored for Detroit. Jimmy Howard stopped shots 21 shots before being pulled in favor of Kaden Fulcher in the second period. Fulcher made nine saves in his NHL debut.

RANGERS 4, PENGUINS 3, OT

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Ryan Strome scored 2:09 into overtime and New York beat Pittsburgh in the regular-season finale.

Brendan Smith, Brady Skjei and Vladislav Namestnikov also scored for New York, long eliminated from playoff contention for the second straight year. Alexandar Georgiev stopped 36 shots while starting for the second straight night. The Rangers snapped a three-game skid and won for just the fifth time in their final 21 games (5-10-6).

Sidney Crosby, Nick Bjugstad and Jake Guentzel scored for the Penguins, who earned a point to secure third-place in the Metropolitan Division and a matchup with the New York Islanders in the first round of the playoffs. Matt Murray finished with 26 saves.

DEVILS 4, PANTHERS 3, OT

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) - Travis Zajac scored the winning goal on the power play in overtime, lifting New Jersey over Florida.

Nathan Bastian scored twice in regulation, Pavel Zacha also scored a goal and Mackenzie Blackwood stopped 37 shots for the Devils in the season finale for both teams.

On the winner, Zajac fired a shot from the high slot that got past Roberto Luongo at 4:04 of 4-on-3 overtime.

Aleksander Barkov, Jonathan Huberdeau and Mike Hoffman scored for the Panthers. Roberto Luongo made 23 saves.

CANADIENS 6, MAPLE LEAFS 5, SO.

MONTREAL (AP) - Ryan Poehling recorded a hat trick and added the shootout winner in his NHL debut as Montreal beat Toronto.

Jordan Weal and Andrew Shaw also scored for the Canadiens (44-30-8), who were eliminated from playoff contention Friday. Goalie Charlie Lindgren, in his first game of the season, stopped 44 of 49 shots.

Zach Hyman, Jake Gardiner, Trevor Moore, William Nylander and Kasperi Kapanen scored for the Maple Leafs (46-28-8), who will face the Boston Bruins in the first round of the playoffs. Frederik Andersen stopped 44 of 49 shots.

STARS 3, WILD 0

DALLAS (AP) - Tyler Seguin broke open a scoreless game with two third-period goals, and Dallas beat Minnesota to take the Western Conference's top wild-card spot.

Ben Bishop made 22 saves for his career-high seventh shutout of the season, and Tyler Pitlick also scored for the Stars. Dallas will open the postseason against Nashville.

Minnesota's Alex Stalock stopped 41 shots.

2024: Phoenix

2025: San Antonio

Sunday?s quiz
Which current Big East basketball coach was the coach at Virginia before Tony Bennett?

Saturday?s quiz
When the Red Sox won the 2004 World Series, Terry Francona was their manager.

Friday?s quiz
Russell Westbrook played his college basketball at UCLA

**************************

Sunday?s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday??

13) Virginia 63, Auburn 62? Wow. Virginia led 57-47 with 5:03 left, then went in the ashcan, not scoring again until they hit a 3-ball with 0:07.4 left, after Auburn had scored 14 consecutive points. Auburn fouled a 3-point shooter with 0:00.6 left; the kid makes all three foul shots and the Cavaliers are playing for the national title.

12) Texas Tech 61, Michigan State 51? Defense ruled in Minneapolis Saturday; Texas Tech held Spartans to 31% from floor in a slow 60-possession slugfest, and advance to their first national title game. Spartans were 8-23 inside arc, 7-24 on the arc. Tom Izzo drops to 2-6 in national semifinal games; you have to win a hell of a lot to get to eight Final Fours.

11) Not sure why this happened, but Cubs/Red Sox still haven?t played a home game yet, and both teams are off to ugly starts, Chicago at 2-6, Boston at 2-8.

Cubs especially look like a team that didn?t have any spring training; they?re first team since at least 1960 to commit catcher?s interference three games in a row.

10) Since 1984, 68 baseball teams started the season 1-6; only 3 of those 68 teams made the playoffs that year.

9) Rockets 120, Knicks 96? Houston led this game 72-43 at halftime Friday night, so it was never in doubt, but with 1:47 left and the subs playing out the string, the Rockets? bench was mostly empty, with the starters off to the locker room, in a surprising show of disrespect. Only guy who stuck around on the Houston bench was former Knick Iman Shumpert.

Houston coach Mike D?Antoni missed the game with the flu; assistant Jeff Bzdelik was coaching the team. There is no rule against this, but it shows a lack of class.

8) 26 of first 55 (47.3%) replay reviews this baseball season resulted in a reversal.

7) Coaching carousel:
? Vanderbilt hired Jerry Stackhouse as its new basketball coach.
? Buffalo promoted assistant Jim Whitesell to head coach.
? Georgia State hired former Siena coach/Tennessee ass?t Rob Lanier as its coach.
? Elon hired Mike Schrage as its coach.

6) Antoine Pettway is an assistant basketball coach at Alabama; he will be working for his 4th different head coach in Tuscaloosa next season. New coach Nate Oats retained Pettway when he was hired last week. Unusual for an assistant coach to stay so long at one place, but he also played at Alabama, and his wife went to school there, too.

5) St John?s assistant coach Matt Abdelmassih left for Nebraska; now his big recruit for the Red Storm this year, JC point guard Cam Mack has asked for his release from St John?s.

4) Since 2000, only one major league pitcher has thrown 140+ pitches in an April game; that was Sterling Hitchcock in 2000, and he had Tommy John surgery before 2000 was over.

3) Baseball injuries:
? Colorado Rockies put Ryan McMahon on the IL wit a sprained elbow. Rockies called up Josh Fuentes to replace him; Fuentes is Nolan Arenado?s cousin.
? Red Sox put IF Brock Holt (scratched cornea) on the IL after his 2-year old son poked him in the eye.

2) Vlade Divac, Sidney Moncrief, Al Attles and Jack Sikma were among 12 people voted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame this weekend.

1) Some people never learn, I mean really never learn.

A Florida man was arrested and charged with burglary after police say he broke into cars in the parking lot of the jail from which he had just been released on grand theft charges.

Oy.

? Washington -$150 vs Columbus +$121

? Pittsburgh -$143 vs NY Islanders +$115

Quote of the Day
?I think in the last five years, not counting this year, there?s been 380 or thereabouts go out early for the draft, and 25 percent of those guys didn?t even get drafted. And another 25 percent weren?t on the team in three years. So, that means 50 percent of the guys that went out early for the draft had failed grades. ?But if you look at the number of guys that were first- and second-round draft picks, there were very few guys that had failed careers. Now, we have guys that have no draft grades, seventh-round grades, free-agent grades, fifth-round grades that are going out of the draft. And the person that loses in that is the player.?
Nick Saban

Tuesday?s quiz
Before Monday night, when was last time the national title game went to overtime?

Monday?s quiz
Nick Saban was head coach at Michigan State before LSU, the Dolphins and Alabama; his QB in East Lansing was Tony Banks.

Sunday?s quiz
DePaul coach Dave Leitao was the coach at Virginia before Tony Bennett.

*************************

Tuesday?s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but??

13) Virginia 85, Texas Tech 77 OT? Random thoughts on this game:
? Game went over the total by 44 points.
? Virginia made 11-24 on arc; teams has been shooting under 30% on arc vs Texas Tech.
? Virginia?s last three wins: two OT games, third win by one point.
? Cavaliers? two Final Four opponents both had a starter get hurt just before they played Virginia.
? Last year, Virginia was the first #1-seed to lose in the first round; they took a ton of grief for that. The value of sports is learning from adversity, keeping your head up and doing better the next time. Tony Bennett showed tremendous class; hope he enjoys this a lot.

12) From 2014-17, eight baseball teams finished 10+ games above .500 in one-run games; those eight teams, the next season, went a combined 169-178 in one-run games. Very tough to replicate success in close games two years in a row.

11) Exception to the rule; Seattle Mariners went 26-15 in one-run games two years ago, then went 36-21 LY. So the Mariners went 62-36 in one-run games for two years but didn?t make the playoffs either year, then they did almost a total rebuild this past winter. Unusual.

10) Must be noted that in 2015, the Cubs went 34-21 in one-run games, then only 22-23 the next year, but that next year was when they won the World Series- they were 66-25 in games decided by 3+ runs.

9) In 2016, Texas Rangers went 95-67 and made the playoffs; they were an amazing 36-11 in one-run games. Since then, Texas went 78-84 in 2017, then 67-95 in ?18, fired their manager last winter after going 25-43 in one-run games. Success is difficult to sustain.

8) Over the last five years, the Reds are 85-145 in one-run games, winning 68 or fewer games each of the last four seasons.

7) Last three years, Minnesota is 45-68 in one-run games, even though they jumped from 57 to 85 wins in 2017- they were 15-18 in one-run games that season.

6) Mariners 12, Royals 4? Whit Merrfield has a 29-game hitting streak; he?s gotten a hit in his first AB in nine of those 29 games.

Daniel Vogelbach has homered in four straight games for Seattle. Felix Hernandez left the game in the 2nd inning with ?flu-like symptoms?

5) Louisville basketball coach Chris Mack posted a picture of himself on Twitter Monday; he is in the hospital this week, getting a knee replaced. Must be a dead period for recruiting.

4) Cubs 10, Pirates 0? Good news for the Cubs; they scored six runs in the second inning and jogged to a win in their home opener.

Bad news for the Cubs; Jon Lester left in the 3rd inning with a hamstring injury.

3) Underrated baseball record: Ted Williams reached base safely in 84 consecutive games, which is the all-time record. Tampa Bay?s Tommy Pham has now reached base 43 games in a row, so he?s more than halfway to the record.

2) Jon Rothstein of CBS is reporting that Chris Mullin will step down as coach at St John?s this week. Apparently they?re going after Arizona State?s Bobby Hurley, who is from New Jersey, but he could be in line to replace Mike Krzyzewski at Duke when that time comes.

If I ran St John?s, we?d give Bruce Pearl a call. Think he would be big in New York City, but not sure where he stands with the NCAA.

1) Thought this was a poor season of college basketball; quality of play is down, the most talented players are mostly 18 years old,. Kids either jump to pro ball or transfer to a bigger name school every time they make two layups in a row. Far less continuity in teams from year to year now, which decreases the quality of play.

First Round Cheat Sheet
April 8, 2019
By VI News

First Round Series Odds

Key:
A ? Atlantic
M ? Metropolitan
C ? Central
P ? Pacific
W ? Wild Card

Eastern Conference

1A Tampa Bay vs. 2W Columbus

Lightning: 62-16-4, 128 points
Blue Jackets: 47-31-4, 98 points

Season series: The Lightning rolled through the NHL this season by tying the league record for most wins in a season with 62. Three of those victories came against old friend John Tortorella and the Blue Jackets, as Tampa Bay outscored Columbus, 17-3. The Bolts crushed the Blue Jackets in the first meeting in Tampa, 8-2 in mid-October, followed by a 4-0 shutout in January. In Tampa Bay's lone visit to central Ohio, the Lightning cruised past the Jackets, 5-1 for their sixth straight win in the series dating back to the start of the 2017-18 season.

Previous playoff outcome: Tampa Bay reached the Eastern Conference finals after eliminating New Jersey and Boston in five games each. The Lightning fell in seven games to eventual champion Washington in spite of owning a 3-2 series lead, as Tampa Bay was blanked in Games 6 and 7. Columbus had an opportunity to end Washington's title run early in the playoffs by leading the Capitals, 2-0. However, Washington won the final four games of the series to advance, marking the second straight season the Jackets were bounced in the opening round.

1M Washington vs. 1W Carolina

Capitals: 48-26-8, 104 points
Hurricanes: 46-29-7, 99 points

Season series: The defending champion Capitals pulled off the four-game season sweep of the Hurricanes, while limiting Carolina to four goals in the final three victories. The Caps outlasted the Hurricanes in the first matchup, 6-5 in the shootout in Raleigh as Alex Ovechkin posted a hat trick for Washington. The Caps captured the next two meetings in D.C. by a combined 7-2 score, while netting a pair of third period goals in the final meeting in Carolina, 3-2 in late March.

Previous playoff outcome: Washington hoisted the Stanley Cup for the first time in franchise history last June after rolling through Columbus, Pittsburgh, Tampa Bay, and Vegas. The Capitals actually lost the series opener in three of four instances, including twice at home to the Blue Jackets and Penguins. However, the Capitals helped themselves with a strong 10-3 road record, while clinching each series on the highway. The Hurricanes are in the playoffs for the first time since 2009, as they made it all the way to the Eastern Conference Finals before getting swept by Pittsburgh. This marks the first time ever that the Capitals and Hurricanes are meeting in the postseason.

2A Boston vs. 3A Toronto

Bruins: 49-24-9, 107 points
Maple Leafs: 46-28-8, 100 points

Season series: Boston captured three of four meetings from its Original Six rival, while dominating the Leafs in a pair of wins at TD Garden. The Bruins crushed the Leafs as -145 home favorites in November, 5-1, but Toronto rebounded for a 4-2 home triumph 16 days later as -160 favorites. Boston took the remaining two matchups, including a 3-2 win at Toronto as a short underdog back on January 12.

Previous playoff outcome: Toronto is probably not thrilled it has to hook up with Boston in the postseason as the Maple Leafs haven't had much luck with the Bruins. Back in the opening round in 2013, the Maple Leafs held a commanding 4-1 lead in the third period of Game 7 at TD Garden. The Bruins roared back to score three goals to force overtime and eventually won it, 5-4. Last season, the Maple Leafs rallied from a 3-1 series deficit in the first round to force Game 7 in Boston as Toronto led 4-3 headed to the third period. Boston scored the final four goals to knock out Toronto, who hasn't advanced past the opening round since 2004. The Bruins routed the Lightning in the first game of the second round, but Tampa Bay won the final four contests to eliminate Boston in five games.

2M N.Y. Islanders vs. 3M Pittsburgh

Islanders: 48-27-9, 103 points
Penguins: 44-26-12, 100 points

Season series: If evidenced by the four meetings this season, this series should be one of the more intriguing ones in the Eastern Conference. The Penguins and Islanders split the four-game season series as each team won once at home and once on the road. Pittsburgh swept the three-game series in 2017-18, but the Islanders knocked off the Penguins twice in a span of three days with Halloween sandwiched in between. The Penguins bounced back with a pair of wins over New York in a five-day stretch in early December as these teams haven't met in 2019.

Previous playoff outcome: The Penguins had their two-year stretch of Stanley Cup titles come to an end last May as Pittsburgh was bounced in the second round in six games by Washington. Pittsburgh has advanced past the opening round in each of the last three seasons, while eliminating the Islanders in the first round of the 2013 playoffs in six games. The Islanders are back in the postseason for the first time since 2016 as they downed the Panthers in the first round before succumbing to the Lightning in five games.

Western Conference

1P Calgary vs. 2W Colorado

Flames: 50-25-7, 107 points
Avalanche: 38-30-14, 90 points

Season series: The Flames took care of the Avalanche in all three meetings this season, which included a pair of one-goal victories. Calgary edged Colorado at Pepsi Center in overtime, 3-2 back in October as the Flames scored the final three goals after trailing 2-0. The next two matchups easily eclipsed the OVER as the Flames defeated the Avalanche, 6-5 on November 1 at the Saddledome, followed by a 5-3 victory in Alberta in early January. Since the start of the 2016-17 season, the Flames have owned the Avs by winning eight of the last nine meetings, including a 5-0 home mark.

Previous playoff outcome: Calgary is making its second postseason appearance in the last three seasons as the Flames were swept in the opening round by the Ducks in 2017. The Flames are facing the Avalanche in the playoffs for the first time ever, as Colorado is back in the postseason for the second straight year after getting knocked out in the first round by Nashville. Colorado hasn't reached the second round since 2008, while Calgary has escaped past the first round only once since reaching the Stanley Cup Final in 2004.

1C Nashville vs. 1W Dallas

Predators: 47-29-6, 100 points
Stars: 43-32-7, 93 points

Season series: The Predators grabbed three of five meetings from the Stars, while the road team won four times. The only time the home team came out victorious was in early February when the Predators slipped past the Stars, 3-2 in overtime at Bridgestone Arena. Although Dallas failed to win at home in two meetings, the Stars topped the Predators twice in Nashville as substantial underdogs, while limiting the Preds to one goal in those victories. The three matchups in Nashville finished UNDER the total, while the two games in Dallas sailed OVER the total.

Previous playoff outcome: For the fifth straight season the Predators are in the playoffs, as Nashville couldn't get out of the second round in 2018 after losing in seven games to Winnipeg. Nashville will hook up with Dallas in the playoffs for the first time ever, marking the fifth division opponent they have faced in the postseason since 2017. The Stars are in the postseason for the third time since 2009, as Dallas last made the playoffs in 2016 and reached Game 7 of the second round before getting blown out by St. Louis.

2C Winnipeg vs. 3C St. Louis

Jets: 47-30-5, 99 points
Blues: 45-28-9, 99 points

Season series: It's been a tale of two seasons for St. Louis, who sat in last place in January, but finished within one point of the Central division title. Why that's relevant for this discussion is the Jets took care of the Blues three times in the first two months of the season, while outscoring St. Louis, 18-9. In an 8-4 Winnipeg blowout in November, Jets' star Patrik Laine scored five goals, but the Blues blanked the Jets, 1-0 in the final matchup on December 7.

Previous playoff outcome: The new Jets were one round away from their first ever Stanley Cup Final appearance in 2018, but upstart Vegas eliminated Winnipeg in five games. Winnipeg knocked off Minnesota and Nashville in the first two rounds as it squares off with St. Louis for the first time in the playoffs since the franchise moved from Atlanta in 2011. The Blues are in the postseason for the seventh time in eight seasons, while reaching the second round in their last playoff appearance in 2017.

2P San Jose vs. 3P Vegas

Sharks: 46-27-9, 101 points
Golden Knights: 43-32-7, 93 points

Season series: The Sharks and Golden Knights split four matchups this season, as Vegas scored six and seven goals in the two wins. Both Vegas victories came by at least three goals, while each San Jose win came by one goal each. The most recent meeting occurred on March 30 at SAP Center as the Sharks edged the Golden Knights, 4-3 in overtime. Each of these division rivals struggled down the stretch as the Sharks dropped nine of their final 12 games, while Vegas lost seven of its last eight contests.

Previous playoff outcome: Vegas is back in the postseason for the second straight year after its improbable run to the Stanley Cup after eliminating Los Angeles, San Jose, and Winnipeg before losing to Washington in five games. The Golden Knights took care of the Sharks in six games of the second round, including three wins at San Jose. The Sharks are in the playoffs for the 13th time in 14 seasons since the lockout, as San Jose has advanced past the first round eight times in this stretch.

Playoffs Futures Preview
April 9, 2019
By Sportsbetting.ag

2019 NHL Playoffs Futures Betting Preview

It's a great time of year to be a sports bettors as the playoffs in both the NHL and NBA are about to get going, and for both leagues, it's a two-month grind towards the ultimate goal of winning a championship. Without question the quest for the Stanley Cup is more physically demanding for the players, and with much more parity in the NHL to begin with, the NHL playoffs can turn into a magical time of year for hockey fans and bettors.

All of that parity also means that finding success in the NHL playoff market can be tough, but it never hurts to have a few futures tickets in your pocket with the hopes that at worst, some possible hedging opportunities arise. With that in mind, here are some plays for this year's playoffs with the goal of cashing at least a few units by mid-June.

Sportsbetting.ag First Round Series Winner ? Favorite Best Bet:

Pittsburgh Penguins (-151) over New York Islanders

The Penguins shot at a three-peat last year came up short when they lost to eventual champion Washington in the 2nd round, but after all that hockey played for their core group of guys over the previous few seasons ? in the NHL and internationally ? getting that longer off-season could be something that pays off this spring.

The Crosby-Malkin core isn't getting any younger in Pittsburgh these days and they know that they've likely only got a few more legitimate cracks at another Stanley Cup in the coming years, and that they'd better make the most of those opportunities.

Pittsburgh and New York split the season series two games apiece, and while they haven't met since early December, it was those final two meetings that went the Penguins way. Against an Islanders team that's got way fewer playoff battles under their belt on the whole, and no real dominant line to count on to produce when the going gets tough, even having home ice isn't going to save the Islanders from another 1st round playoff exit in the franchise's long history of doing just that since the glory days of the early 1980's.

Sportsbetting.ag First Round Series Winner ? Underdog Best Bet:

Dallas Stars (+155) over Nashville Predators

The Dallas Stars made a point this year to tighten up things tremendously on the defensive end after years of their run-and-gun style lead to long summer vacations. It worked enough to get them a Wildcard spot in this year's playoffs, and that type of focus in your own end is a tried and true blueprint for finding success in playoff hockey.

And yet, even with that defensive focus, this Stars team is still loaded up front with skilled goal scorers who have been deep in the playoffs before throughout their careers (Seguin, Spezza, Zuccarello, Radulov,) and if they see an offensive spike during this series with the Predators ? a team that prides themselves on defense as well ? then this could be a series that the Stars easily steal.

With two of the best three teams in the league in terms of goals allowed per game squaring off here, with a +155 price tag, it's not hard to root for a few bounces to go the Stars way in what should be a tight series filled with 3-2 type of games.

Sportsbetting.ag Conference Winner Futures Best Bets:

Calgary Flames to win West (+350)
Pittsburgh Penguins to win East (+700)

The Tampa Bay Lightning have dominated the entire league this year and are the popular (and easy) choice to go the distance, and it's really hard not to like their chances to at least get to the Eastern Conference Final. But at +125 to win the conference, there isn't a whole lot of value in backing that type of play now.

Enter the play on Pittsburgh at +700 as with the bracket format you know a team coming from the Metropolitan side of things will be opposing Tampa (or someone else) with a berth in the Stanley Cup Final on the line, and should it be a Penguins/Lightning matchup, well then some nice hedging opportunities will arise.

I don't think you can ignore the Penguins pedigree at this time of year, and while they are all a year older and that means many more hockey miles on their body, off a relatively long summer a year ago, Pittsburgh is more than capable of making a deep run again this year. You already know my thoughts on them getting by the Islanders in Round 1, and with Washington or Columbus up next after that, I don't believe either of those teams will be able to get past Crosby and company this year.

Out in the West, it is the #1 seed I'm backing with at a near 4-1 price tag, as Calgary may not have the experience that many other teams do in this 'tournament', but their speed and scoring ability is what led them to the top of a very physical Western Conference, and while playoff hockey is 'heavier', as long as the Flames get solid goaltending throughout, they should be the first Canadian team to reach the Stanley Cup Finals since the Vancouver Canucks did it in 2011.

Sportsbetting.ag Stanley Cup Winner Future Bet:

Pittsburgh Penguins to win Stanley Cup (+1400)

If all goes according to this plan and we do get a Calgary/Pittsburgh Final, the Flames will follow suit in terms of what happened to the 2011 Vancouver Canucks team, hopefully without the riots afterwards. It might not take seven games for the Flames to fall to Pittsburgh, but at +1400, the time is now to potentially cash in on what may end up being the last hurrah for Crosby and Malkin.

For every team not named Tampa Bay, Pittsburgh's arguably got the easiest path to the Conference Finals, and from there it's just a matter of them showing up and knocking off the President Trophy winners.

It's well known that the President's Trophy winners don't exactly have the best track record in terms of winning the Stanley Cup ? has only happened twice since the 2002-03 season, and only once in the past five years have they even made it to the Conference Finals. This Penguins franchise is responsible for eliminating two of those past winners (Washington in 2016 and 17), and the only other President's Trophy team to win the award by a margin of 20+ points in the standings ? 1995-96 Detroit Red Wings ? fell in the Conference Finals to eventual Stanley Cup winner Colorado.

Pittsburgh could follow that same script this year, giving Crosby hist 4th Stanley Cup ? two more than his mentor Mario Lemieux ? and cementing this organization as the best in the league during the latter half of this decade.

Wednesday?s 6-pack

More very early over/under NFL win totals:

? Raiders 6, over +$120

? Eagles 9.5

? Steelers 9, under -$115

? 49ers 8, under -$115

? Seattle 8.5, over -$120

? Tampa Bay 6, over -$120

Quote of the Day
?The past four years at St. John?s University have been one of the most thrilling and challenging points of my career. I am proud of our accomplishments. NCAA Tournament Selection Sunday will be a lifetime memory. I am forever grateful to St. John?s for giving me the opportunity to hear Carnesecca Arena and Madison Square Garden roar again for college basketball and especially for our players.?
Chris Mullin

Wednesday?s quiz
Who was the Lakers? coach the last time they made the playoffs?

Tuesday?s quiz
Kansas beat Memphis 75-68 in OT in the 2008 national title game.

Monday?s quiz
Nick Saban was head coach at Michigan State before LSU, the Dolphins and Alabama; his QB in East Lansing was Tony Banks.

**********************

Wednesday?s List of 13: Mid-week musings??

13) Magic Johnson abruptly stepped down Tuesday night as president of the Lakers.

NBA continues to get stranger by the day. Doesn?t seem like there are a lot of happy people there. League is profitable, lot of folks getting rich. You?d think they?d be happier.

12) UCLA ended its 100-day coaching search by hiring Cincinnati?s Mick Cronin, who will get $24M for six years. Cronin made the NCAA?s the last nine years with the Bearcats, but made Sweet 16 only one time, and has never been in an Elite 8.

Cronin was at Cincinnati for 13 years; his record in NCAA games there? 6-9. They got turned down by Rick Barnes and Jamie Dixon, neither of whom will get confused with John Wooden. I?m guessing the fanbase won?t be thrilled.

11) On the other hand, where does Cincinnati turn now? They just upgraded their facilities, and have a pretty impressive history of winning. AAC is an improving league; this is a good job for somebody. Question is whats the better open job, Cincinnati or St John?s?

10) Avery Johnson, Chris Mullin, Mike Dunleavy all coached in the NBA, all got told to take a hike this spring by colleges that employed them. Recruiting is a grind, and no one wins without really good players. Guys who worked in the NBA aren?t always thrilled by the seemingly endless treadmill that recruiting can be.

9) When they announced the 2019 inductees for the Naismith Hall of Fame this weekend, part of me was surprised that Zion Williamson wasn?t inducted; if you listen to ESPN, he?s the greatest college ballplayer since Bill Walton. ESPN?s #1 goal is promoting the NBA, and thats where Williamson will be for the next 12-15 years.

8) One thing you never want to see, Weather Channel?s Jim Cantore posting a map of your hometown on Twitter, with the accompanying radar of an approaching storm. Not good.

7) Pirates? P Chris Archer got suspended for five games after starting Sunday?s fracas with the Reds, but he didn?t get thrown out of that game after he threw behind Derek Dietrich.

6) Baseball injuries:
? Cleveland put P Mike Clevinger (back) on the IL.
? Cubs put P Jon Lester (hamstring) on the IL.
? Colorado put P Tyler Anderson (knee) on the IL.
? Dodgers put Hyun-Jin Ryu (leg) on the IL.
? Luis Severino went back to New York for another MRI on his shoulder.

5) Cincinnati Reds/St Louis Cardinals are playing two games in Monterrey, Mexico this weekend, bit of an unusual schedule.

4) Virginia won its six NCAA tournament games by a total of 45 points, 2nd-lowest total for a champion in the shot clock era. 1997 Arizona Wildcats won their six games by total of 32 points. ?97 UConn Huskies won their six games by total of 47.

3) From 2015-17, 18 baseball teams won 10+ more games than they did the year before; those 18 teams, in the third year, regressed by an average of 4.89 wins per year.

There are five such teams this year: Braves, Brewers, A?s, Phillies, Rays.

2) TV ratings for Monday night?s Virginia-Texas Tech game were 23% higher than last year?s national title game.

1) Since 1989, the Big 14 has won only one national title in basketball, when Michigan State won the championship in 2000 in Indianapolis.

NHL Stanley Cup playoffs best bets and prop predictions: Crosby kills the Isles
Monty Andrews

The Columbus Blue Jackets have been playing like a team ready to pull off an betting upset but they drew the wrong opponent for that task as they kick off their first-round Stanley Cup playoffs series in Tampa Bay Wednesday night.

It's one of five games on the NHL odds board for opening night of the postseason, a sked that includes Sidney Crosby looking to continue his mastery of the Islanders and San Jose hoping to get off to a quick start against Vegas.

Here are the best bets and NHL predictions for Day 1 of the Stanley Cup playoffs:

COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS AT TAMPA BAY LIGHTNING

Moneyline Odds: Columbus +195/Tampa Bay -240
Over/Under: 6.5 goals
Start Time: 7 p.m. ET Amalie Arena, Tampa

The Blue Jackets were full value for their East wild card spot, ending the season with seven wins in their final eight games while riding a five-game road winning streak.

But the Lightning have dominated the Blue Jackets in their recent head-to-head series, winning six consecutive meetings overall while outscoring them 29-7 and shutting them out three times over that span.

The two-goal Lightning margin of victory in Game 1 is in play at +500, as is the three-goal win at +550.

PITTSBURGH PENGUINS AT NEW YORK ISLANDERS

Moneyline Odds: Pittsburgh EVEN/New York -105
Over/Under: 5.5 goals
Start Time: 7:30 p.m. ET, Barclays Center, New York

The first-round series between the Penguins and the Islanders should be a good one, and all eyes will be on Pittsburgh superstar Sidney Crosby, who has been a one-man wrecking crew against the Isles over the course of his career.

Crosby enters Game 1 at Barclays Center having racked up 36 goals and 77 assists in 66 career games vs. New York ? his highest point total against any opponent. We recommend taking whatever Crosby scoring prop you can get your hands on here.

Some books have Crosby to score anytime at +190, while Crosby scoring the first goal of the game is listed at +900.

ST. LOUIS BLUES AT WINNIPEG JETS

Moneyline Odds: St. Louis -103/Winnipeg -120
Over/Under: 5.5 goals
Start Time: 8 p.m. ET, Bell MTS Place, Winnipeg

The Winnipeg Jets have their sights set on reaching the Stanley Cup finals for the first time in franchise history. There's one statistic, in particular, that could work in their favor as they kick off their first-round series Wednesday against visiting St. Louis.

The Jets went 18-21 SU in games in which their opponent scored first during the regular season, the second-most wins of that kind in the league.

It's a strong enough trend for bettors to consider the "No" on the team scoring first to win (+175).

DALLAS STARS AT NASHVILLE PREDATORS

Moneyline Odds: Dallas +145/Nashville -164
Over/Under: 5 goals
Start Time: 9:30 p.m. ET, Bridgestone Arena, Nashville

Game 1 between the Dallas Stars and Nashville Predators might take a while to get going.

These teams were spectacularly deficient in the opening 20 minutes of their regular season games, with the Stars scoring a league-low 39 first-period goals and the Predators ranking 30th out of 31 teams with a paltry 53 goals in the opening frame.

If you're looking for an intriguing first-period play Wednesday, we suggest the under on the 0.5-goal total in this one (+275).

VEGAS GOLDEN KNIGHTS AT SAN JOSE SHARKS

Moneyline Odds: Vegas +110/ San Jose -130
OverUnder: 6 goals
Start Time: 10:30 p.m. ET, SAP Center, San Jose

The Sharks haven't had any problem putting up early offense this season, and that will be a critical component of their best-of-seven first-round series with the Vegas Golden Knights that kicks off Wednesday in San Jose.

The hosts come into the opener having scored 102 first-period goals during the campaign, tied with the Lightning for the most in the league.

The Sharks are installed at +160 to lead after one period, and they're a good option to do just that.

Blue Jackets stun Lightning with 3rd-period comeback
April 10, 2019
By The Associated Press

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) Seth Jones scored the go-ahead goal on the power play to cap Columbus' three-goal third period, and the Blue Jackets rallied to beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-3 in Game 1 of the teams' first-round Eastern Conference playoff series Wednesday night.

Jones made it 4-3 from the slot with 5:55 to play as the Blues Jackets erased a 3-0 deficit after the Lightning scored three times in the opening period.

With Columbus trailing 3-1 in the third, David Savard deked around Lightning defenseman Victor Hedman and scored 7:56 into the period to make it a one-goal game. Josh Anderson picked up a short-handed goal that tied it at 3 at 11:54.

Nick Foligno had the other goal for Columbus, and Sergei Bobrovsky ended up with 26 saves after struggling in the first period.

The Lightning, who matched the 1995-96 Detroit Red Wings for the most wins in a regular season with 62, got first-period goals from Alex Killorn, Anthony Cirelli and Yanni Gourde. Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped 22 shots.

Game 2 is Friday night in Tampa Bay.

ISLANDERS 4, PENGUINS 3, OT

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) - Josh Bailey scored on a rebound at 4:39 of overtime, leading the New York Islanders past the Pittsburgh Penguins in the opener of their Eastern Conference first-round playoff series.

Jordan Eberle had a goal and an assist, and Brock Nelson and Nick Leddy also scored for New York, which was opening a postseason series at home for the first time in 31 years. Robin Lehner stopped 41 shots.

Phil Kessel and Evgeni Malkin each had a goal and an assist, and Justin Schultz also scored for the Penguins. Matt Murray finished with 29 saves.

On the winning goal, Mathew Barzal brought the puck into the offensive zone on a 2-on-1 break, faked in front to draw Murray out and sent a backhand shot that bounced off the left post, but Bailey was there to knock it in.

Game 2 is Friday night back at the Nassau Coliseum.

BLUES 2, JETS 1

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) - Tyler Bozak scored with 2:05 left in the third period to give the St. Louis Blues the victory in Game 1 of the Western Conference opening-round playoff series.

Pat Maroon sent a backhand pass from behind the net out to Bozak in the slot, and Bozak's quick shot went by Winnipeg's Connor Hellebuyck for the go-ahead goal.

David Perron also scored for St. Louis early in the third, and Jordan Binnington made 24 saves.

Patrik Laine scored late in the first period and Hellebuyck stopped 24 shots for the Jets, who host Game 2 on Friday.

STARS 3, PREDATORS 2

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Rookie Miro Heiskanen scored two goals in his first postseason game, and the Dallas Stars beat the Predators in Game 1 of their first-round Western Conference series.

Heiskanen became the eighth rookie teenage defenseman in NHL history to score a goal in their first career playoff game and the first since Adam Larsson with New Jersey on May 1, 2012, against Philadelphia, according to NHL Stats. He also became the third-youngest with a multi-goal game and the youngest in franchise history with a postseason goal at 19 years, 266 days.

Mats Zuccarello also scored, helping Dallas continue its success from the regular season in Nashville, where the Stars won twice.

Roman Josi and P.K. Subban each scored for Nashville.

Game 2 of the best-of-seven series is Saturday night in Nashville.

Pavelski's painful goal leads Sharks past Golden Knights 5-2
April 10, 2019
ShareFacebookTwitterDiggMySpace

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) Joe Pavelski took a puck off his chin to score the opening goal and the San Jose Sharks raced past the Vegas Golden Knights with a 5-2 victory Wednesday night in Game 1 of their first-round series.

Brent Burns, Marc-Edouard Vlasic and Evander Kane added goals in a wild second period that featured heavy hitting, a parade to the penalty box and the high intensity expected in a series between two franchises that have become fierce rivals in just two seasons.

Tomas Hertl added an empty-net goal and Martin Jones made 24 saves to get San Jose started off right in this series heading into Game 2 on Friday night.

Mark Stone scored both goals for the Golden Knights, who struggled to generate much offense at all against a Sharks team that has appeared to shake off a late-season slide in time for the postseason. Marc-Andre Fleury made 28 saves.

The captain set the tone for the Sharks with his goal in the first period and then his presence on the ice in the second despite playing hurt thanks to taking a puck to his face.

With the Sharks on the power play, Pavelski went to the front of the net, where he is usually so adept at tipping pucks with his stick for goals. Burns' point shot came in high and hit him in the chin instead before bouncing into the net.

Pavelski was unable even to celebrate, heading straight to the dressing room for treatment while the crowd roared at the series-opening goal. There was concern in the arena when Pavelski didn't come out to start the second but he re-emerged early in the period with a bloody mouth and a full shield to protect his injured face.

Things then got wild early in the period following a series of penalties. After coincidental minors to San Jose's Brenden Dillon and Jonathan Marchessault left the teams playing four on four, the Sharks went on a power play when Deryk Engelland was called for a trip.

That was quickly negated when Pavelski was called for tripping, creating the rare 3-on-3 in the playoffs. The Sharks capitalized when Erik Karlsson fed Burns, who beat Fleury from the top of the circle with a wrister to make it 2-0.

Then with the teams back at 4-on-4 less than a minute later, Joe Thornton set up Vlasic in the slot for the goal that made it 3-0.

The Golden Knights got on the board seconds after Pavelski's penalty ended when Stone got inside of Burns at the side of the net to knock in a loose puck.

But the Sharks regained the three-goal lead with 17.1 seconds remaining in the period when Kane deftly deflected a perfect pass from Karlsson at the point past Fleury.

Stone scored late in the third on a power play to make it 4-2. But Jones stopped Reilly Smith on a breakaway with less than three minutes left and Hertl sealed it with his empty-netter.

The Sharks went into the series looking to avoid the slow starts that have plagued them against Vegas the past two seasons. The Golden Knights had scored in the first five minutes in eight of 14 meetings, including all four this season.

But San Jose didn't even allow a shot on goal in the first five minutes, spending most of the time in Vegas' zone. The Sharks then got on the board late in the period in painful fashion with Pavelski's goal after fourth-liner Micheal Haley drew a penalty on Pierre-Edouard Bellemare for the game's first power play.

NOTES:
Karlsson had two assists in his second game back after missing 17 games with a groin injury. ... Fleury has allowed at least four goals in all three games since missing nearly three weeks with a lower-body injury.

Game 2 is Friday night in San Jose.

Thursday?s 6-pack

Odds to win The Masters:

? Rory McIlroy 8-1

? Dustin Johnson 11-1

? Justin Rose 14-1

? Rickie Fowler 15-1

? Jordan Spieth, Eldrick Woods 16-1

? Koepka, Molinari, Rahm, Thomas 20-1

Quote of the Day
?It was a relief at first, like OK, that?s over with, pulling the trigger on retiring, But the closer to spring it got ? I know it?s just a game, but it?s almost like mourning. It was more than a game to us, it was my life since I was a kid. It?s almost like a part of you dies.?
Former big leaguer Will Middlebrooks, talking about retiring

Thursday?s quiz
When was the last time a Canadian franchise won the Stanley Cup?

Wednesday?s quiz
Mike Dunleavy was the Lakers? coach the last time they made the playoffs, in 2013.

Tuesday?s quiz
Kansas beat Memphis 75-68 in OT in the 2008 national title game.

**********************

Thursday?s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud??

13) Tampa Bay 9, White Sox 1- Rays are off to a 10-3 start; they scored in top of the first inning in all six games on this road trip. Wondering if they prepare differently than other teams, which allows them to score early in games?

12) A gambler wagered $85,000 at a William Hill sportsbook on Eldrick Woods to win The Masters; if Woods wins, the gambler banks $1.19M.

11) Thinking about the Virginia-Texas Tech game Monday night, and how the total opened at 120 and was quickly bet down to 117. Books cleaned up on that, after the 85-77 final.

10) Next fall St John?s will have their 6th hoop coach in 18 years; located in Queens, you?d think the Red Storm would be good at basketball, but over the last 17 years. St John?s is 106-190 in Big East games. Of their last five coaches, Steve Lavin was by far the best.

Why wouldn?t the people who run the school take a deep breath, count to 10, think of all the money they?re about to make and hire Rick Pitino?

9) Baseball wagering advice; next time Freddy Peralta pitches for the Brewers, check the lineup to see who Milwaukee?s catcher is.

When Manny Pina catches Peralta, as he has 75% of the time, batters hit .165 vs Peralta.

When someone else catches Peralta, teams hit around .300 against him.

This isn?t difficult; I mean, I was lucky to graduate from a state college, but even I know that Peralta is a way better pitcher when Pina is his catcher.

8) Twins? OF Max Kepler was born in Germany; both his parents were ballet dancers.

Twins were scheduled to fly home after their game at Citi Field last night, but they might not have made it; they were expecting 15 inches of snow in the Twin Cities, so the plane may have had to land in Milwaukee instead.

7) Coaching carousel:
? BYU hired former Utah Valley coach Mark Pope as its new coach.
? Belmont hired Lipscomb coach Casey Alexander, a Belmont alum.

6) I get this phone call Tuesday afternoon, from some company supposedly trying to get me a job, a job I haven?t asked for, nor one that I want.

Politely tell the woman that I?m not interested, but she rattles on and I listen. She asks if I?m an American citizen, I say yes. Then she asks what year I graduated high school. When I tell her, she abruptly ends the call and hangs up. Alrighty then.

Thanks for nothing, lady.

5) Orlando Magic made the NBA playoffs this year for first time in seven years under coach Steve Clifford, who is in his first year with the Magic.

Coaches often lead a nomadic existence; way back in 1994-95, Clifford spent a season as an assistant coach at Siena College, which is four miles from Armadillo World HQ here in beautiful Colonie, NY.

Siena is a small school; they have a good mid-major basketball program, but its a hell of a long way from the NBA. Credit to coach Clifford for making it to and succeeding in the bigtime.

4) Celtics? Marcus Smart has suffered a torn oblique on his left side and could be sidelined for the first two rounds of the NBA playoffs.

3) Kansas City?s Billy Hamilton scored from second on a long fly ball to centerfield Tuesday night. Hamilton ain?t much of a hitter, but he is a good fielder and is very, very fast.

2) Magic Johnson must?ve been pretty disgusted if he quit without telling Jeannie Buss or Rob Pelinka first; common wisdom seems to be that Johnson didn?t work that hard at the job- he has business interests he deals with, too. Being a team president is a pretty serious job.

He actually said, ?Now I can tweet whenever I like? kind of a stunning thing to say.

1) Just because a guy was a great ballplayer doesn?t mean he will be great at other stuff.

Playing.
Coaching.
Being an executive. Three different skill sets.
