Karlsson, Sharks beat Blues 5-4 after controversial no-call

ST. LOUIS (AP) Erik Karlsson scored 5:23 into overtime after the officials missed a hand pass by Timo Meier, and the San Jose Sharks rallied to beat the St. Louis Blues 5-4 on Wednesday night to take a 2-1 lead in the Western Conference final.

Meier used his right hand to knock a loose puck toward the front of the net. Gustav Nyquist then passed it over to Karlsson, who beat Jordan Binnington for his second goal of the game.

Binnington and the Blues complained immediately about Meier's pass. The officials huddled while Karlsson and the Sharks celebrated, but the play wasn't reviewable and the goal stood.

Game 4 of the best-of-seven series is Friday night in St. Louis.

The Blues led 4-3 before Logan Couture tied it with 61 seconds left in regulation. Joe Thornton scored twice for San Jose, and Martin Jones made 28 saves.

David Perron had two goals for St. Louis, and Vladimir Tarasenko and Alexander Steen also scored. Colton Parayko had three assists, and Jordan Binnington made 27 stops.

The Blues trailed 2-0 after one and 3-1 in the second before rallying.

Tarasenko, who faced criticism after a lackluster performance in Game 1, started the comeback with his first goal in six games at 4:05 of the second. Perron tied it by beating Jones on the stick side with a wrist shot from the left dot with 3:57 left in the period.

St. Louis went on a power play after Brent Burns took down Oskar Sundqvist late in the period. Perron scored his second goal of the series a minute later, giving the Blues the lead with their first power-play goal in 19 chances with the man advantage.

It was Perron's first multigoal playoff performance in 73 games.

After an early Blues push, the Sharks grabbed control in the first.

Blues defenseman Vince Dunn departed with 8:35 left in the first after getting hit in the face by a Brenden Dillon shot, forcing St. Louis to mix and match five defensemen.

San Jose then jumped in front when Karlsson intercepted a Joel Edmundson clearing attempt and beat Binnington with a wrist shot through traffic at 13:37.

Thornton made it 2-0 with 3:02 left in the first, scoring on a backhander after Robert Bortuzzo blocked a Marc-Edouard Vlasic shot.

Steen got the Blues on the board at 1:18 of the second, but Thornton answered 18 seconds later with his second goal of the game, giving him his first multigoal playoff game over 176 games in a 22-year career.

NOTES: The Blues and Sharks entered the game tied for first in the NHL with 38 points in the postseason from their defensemen.

Rask's roll has Bruins aiming for Cup

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) Tuukka Rask is stopping just about any puck playoff opponents can shoot his way - even the ones he doesn't see.

The goaltender has been dominant in the Boston Bruins' six-game postseason winning streak that has them on the doorstep of the Stanley Cup Final. Just don't expect him to make any grand declaration of being ''in the zone'' as he makes stop after stop in these playoffs.

He's confident and comfortable. Leave it at that.

''I've felt good for many, many months,'' Rask said. ''It's just the way when you're seeing the puck, when you feel comfortable. It's about timing and patience and all that. I think experience helps that. ... The way I usually want to play, I want to play calm and make myself look big and maybe even tough chances, try to make it look easy kind of.

''So if that's in the zone, then so be it. But I just try to be focused and give us a chance.''

That's exactly what Rask has been doing, too, in helping the Bruins to a 3-0 lead on the Carolina Hurricanes in the Eastern Conference final. Boston goes for the sweep Thursday night in Raleigh.

The 32-year-old Finnish netminder has stopped 85 of 90 shots in the first three games of the series with the Hurricanes, who have just been unable to solve Rask even when getting a handful of open-net chances. He's allowed nine goals amid 205 shots in the six-game streak, good for a .956 save percentage and a 1.5 goals-against average.

Overall, he's second in the playoffs for save percentage (.939) and goals-against average (1.96) while posting a playoff-best 11 victories in 16 games.

''He looks super calm right now,'' said Carolina defenseman Dougie Hamilton, who spent three seasons as Rask's teammate with the Bruins. ''We have to do a better job of getting in his face and making it harder on him. I mean, if he's going to see it, he's going to stop it, so we've got to get some sloppy stuff around the net.''

Yet it didn't matter what the Hurricanes did Tuesday night in an all-out attack on Rask to start the game. They couldn't zip or slip one by him.

Rask stopped 20 first-period shots - 20! - and ensured the Bruins went into the first intermission in a scoreless game despite the Hurricanes carrying play in front of a rowdy crowd that had helped Carolina go 5-0 at home in the postseason to that point.

That included one sequence roughly three minutes in when Rask stopped Nino Niederreiter's tip, Micheal Ferland's putback at the crease and Justin Williams' follow-up try despite Rask losing his stick. There was another Williams rebound that wasn't officially counted as a shot on goal,, too. It was a harrowing few seconds for Boston coach Bruce Cassidy, who quipped: ''I might have had my eyes closed for three of them.''

''He's been dialed in'' since the start of the playoffs, Cassidy said. ''He's been excellent. He really hasn't had a poor night. He's had a couple that were, I'd say, above average and the rest have been very good. Tonight the first period was excellent.''

That gave the Bruins a chance to regroup, then come out and score twice in the second period to take control.

Sure, Rask caught a break when Carolina's Teuvo Teravainen missed a wide-open net in the opening minute when the goalie fell trying to slide across the crease. And Rask said there were shots that he never spotted until the puck hit him.

''There's a couple of chances I didn't see in the first period,'' he said. ''A lot of times, if you don't see it and don't move, you're going to have a better shot at saving it than if you would move too much.''

Then again, when a goaltender is playing as well as Rask is, sometimes he makes his own luck.

''He's always given us a chance to win,'' Bruins center Patrice Bergeron said. ''That being said, right now he's definitely in the zone and doing some amazing stuff.''

NOTES: Cassidy said fourth-line winger Chris Wagner has returned to Boston for further testing and will not play in Game 4. Wagner, who scored the Bruins' first goal in Game 3, hurt his right arm while blocking a shot late in the third period. ... Carolina coach Rod Brind'Amour said Curtis McElhinney would ''probably'' make his second straight start in goal. Petr Mrazek started the Hurricanes' first nine playoff games but allowed 10 goals in the first two games of this series.

Preview: Bruins (49-24) at Hurricanes (46-29)

RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Boston Bruins have been in some binds in the postseason, but they don't want the luxury of a 3-0 series lead in the Eastern Conference finals to distract them from the mission.

The Bruins will try to clinch a spot in the Stanley Cup Final when they go for a sweep of the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday night at PNC Arena.

"It's a good spot to be in," Bruins left winger Brad Marchand told reporters of the 3-0 lead. "But it's far from being over. ... It's all about the next one."

Boston was forced to seven games against the Toronto Maple Leafs in the first round, then trailed the best-of-seven series against the Columbus Blue Jackets 2-1 before winning in six.

Now, the Bruins have won six straight games, delivering the Hurricanes a home loss for the first time in the playoffs with Tuesday night's 2-1 victory in Game 3.

"This year we feel like we really have each other's backs," Boston goalie Tuukka Rask said. "We've been in some tight games."

If the Bruins fail to sweep the series, the teams will go back to Boston for Game 5 on Saturday night.

Rask has stopped 85 of 90 shots faced (.944) in the series.

"Guys have played with Tuukka for a while now," Bruins coach Bruce Cassidy said. "They know what he's made of. ... (Since the playoffs began), he hasn't really had a poor night."

The Hurricanes haven't been quite as settled in the net. Curtis McElhinney made his first appearance of the series by playing Game 3 after the Bruins posted 11 total goals (one into an empty net) in the first two games with Petr Mrazek in net for Carolina. The team has yet to officially announce a Game 4 starter.

The Hurricanes won two elimination games against the Washington Capitals last month. They'll need four of those in this round.

"It's frustrating, for sure," Hurricanes left winger Warren Foegele said of the situation. "Just take it day by day. We believe."

The Hurricanes made progress in Game 3, something they'll aim to build off as they attempt to extend their season.

"I think you can feel good about the fact that we at least gave them a game," coach Rod Brind'Amour said. "To me, we hadn't given them a game yet."

That was accomplished in Game 3 -- in which Carolina outshot Boston 36-31 but left without the desired result -- for the first time in a series the Hurricanes entered riding a six-game winning streak.

Yet the Bruins won't take anything for granted for Game 4.

"It's a tough place to play," Boston right winger David Backes said of the road venue. "It's a tough place to win."

The Bruins' six-game win streak is the franchise's longest in the postseason since 1978.

One glaring difference between the teams has been power-play production. The Bruins own a 31.9 percent success rate (15 of 47) this postseason on power plays compared to Carolina's 10 percent (5 of 50).

Boston has relied heavily at times on veteran defenseman Zdeno Chara, who played extended stretches. His penalty killing was crucial again in Game 3, as Carolina went scoreless in five power-play opportunities.

"He relishes those situations, he's going to give it his all," Cassidy said. "Really tough minutes for him. He was a rock for us."

The Bruins will be without right winger Chris Wagner, who sustained an arm injury when he was hit by slap shot late in Game 3.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) Boston's top line kept finding ways to score, especially on the power play. With a chance to clinch another series, Tuukka Rask was perfect - again.

Rask posted his seventh career playoff shutout, and the Bruins swept the Carolina Hurricanes out of the Eastern Conference final, winning 4-0 on Thursday night to reach their third Stanley Cup Final in nine years.

''Everyone in the room wanted to be at their best,'' forward Brad Marchand said, ''and everyone was at their best tonight.''

Rask made 24 saves in his second straight series-clinching shutout. Patrice Bergeron scored two goals, David Pastrnak had a goal and two assists and Marchand added an empty-netter. Both Bergeron and Pastrnak scored on second-period power plays.

The Bruins won their seventh straight postseason game - their longest playoff winning streak in nearly half a century - to return to the Cup final after winning in 2011 and losing to Chicago two years later.

''It's so difficult to advance in the playoffs, let alone make it to the final,'' said Rask, the backup to Conn Smythe Trophy winner Tim Thomas in 2011. ''We need to really enjoy this but realize we have a lot of work to do.''

On its longest postseason win streak since reeling off nine straight in 1972, Boston earned a break before taking on the West winner. San Jose leads its series with St. Louis 2-1 heading into Game 4 Friday night.

The Bruins won this one without captain Zdeno Chara, who was scratched with an unspecified injury and is day to day, ending a run of 98 consecutive playoff games for the hulking 42-year-old veteran that dated to 2011.

Chara joined his teammates on the ice for the post-series handshake line with Carolina, and while coach Bruce Cassidy declined to elaborate on the nature of Chara's injury, he did say he's expected back for the start of the Cup final.

Curtis McElhinney made 19 saves for the Hurricanes, whose first playoff appearance since 2009 ended precisely the same way their previous postseason trip did - by being swept in the East final.

''Listen, the tank's been low for a long time,'' captain Justin Williams said. ''It's been running on adrenaline and sheer will. It's always tough to swallow when the season ends, just abruptly like that. It's like you're cut real quick. And you've got to go home.''

Carolina got this far by sweeping the New York Islanders in Round 2. Not that the extra rest time helped the Hurricanes, or anyone else in these playoffs: No team that swept its opponent has won its next series.

After outscoring them 17-5 in four games, Boston no doubt wants to halt that trend - especially with the sport's biggest prize on the line.

Special teams drove this series, with the Bruins scoring seven power-play goals in the four games while the Hurricanes had five during their entire 15-game postseason run. Boston had at least one power-play goal in every game while Carolina failed to score on its last 13 chances with the man advantage.

So it was no surprise that Boston took control with its best-in-the-playoffs power-play unit.

Eighteen seconds into a minor on the Hurricanes for having too many men on the ice, Pastrnak finished off a slick give-and-go with Marchand, getting past Calvin de Haan and slipping the puck into an open net at 4:46 of the second.

''Everything's going OK, then we get into that specialty area where that's obviously a huge advantage for them,'' coach Rod Brind'Amour said. ''And they made us pay.''

With Greg McKegg in the box for goaltender interference, the Bruins scored on another give-and-go involving Pastrnak, who set up Bergeron's goal with 1:26 left in the second.

Rask - who blanked Columbus 3-0 in the decisive sixth game of the previous series - didn't even face a shot on goal for roughly the first half of the third, and only seven for the entire period.

''Tuukka's been very consistent,'' Cassidy said. ''Usually, if you're going to get on a roll, your goaltender's going to have to win a game for you somewhere along the way or steal one for you. ... He can't have a bad night.''

McElhinney made his second straight start in place of Petr Mrazek, a move made by Brind'Amour to shake things up after the Hurricanes lost the first two games of the series in Boston by a combined 11-4 score.

That this game was scoreless after 20 minutes was a testament to McElhinney, who came up with several early gems - including robbing Marchand from close range with his glove about 7 1/2 minutes in.

NOTES: D John Moore replaced Chara in the defensive pairing with Connor Clifton. ... With fourth-line forward Chris Wagner back in Boston having his injured right arm examined, C Noel Acciari slid into the lineup for the Bruins for the first time in the series. ... Both teams' general managers - Don Waddell of the Hurricanes, and Don Sweeney of the Bruins - were announced as finalists for the league's GM of the year award. ... Carolina LW Jordan Martinook (lower body) missed a second straight game.

Preview: Sharks (47-27) at Blues (45-28)

The sting of their Game 3 overtime loss will once again test the mettle of the St. Louis Blues. Fortunately for them, the Blues have overcome enough adversity already this season to have a chance.

As the Blues look to rebound from a 5-4 loss to the San Jose Sharks on Wednesday when they continue the series Friday in St. Louis, it's with the confidence that they regrouped from being the league's last-place team when they awoke on Jan. 3 to reach the Western Conference finals -- a journey that includes a head coach firing and reliance upon a rookie goalie to turn the corner.

The motivation of knowing they received the short end of the stick when Timo Meier's hand-pass resulted in Erik Karlsson scoring the game-winning goal in Game 3 to give the Sharks a 2-1 edge in the best-of-seven series provides the Blues extra fuel for their underdog tale.

"We did in the last series," captain Alex Pietrangelo told NHL.com. "We were down against Dallas and came back (to win the second-round series in seven games). We were down 2-0 (Wednesday night) and came back. We know how to look in the mirror, and we know how to get better. We felt we had control of a lot of the game, so we'll use that recipe for next game."

Lost in the controversial goal that will likely prevent referees Marc Joannette and Dan O'Rourke and linesmen Jonny Murray and Matt MacPherson from many more assignments this spring is the fact the Blues had all kinds of opportunities to close out the game long before Karlsson's handball goal.

St. Louis led 4-3 after two periods, and golden chances to score the much-needed insurance goal were thwarted by Sharks goalie Martin Jones, and a couple of opportunities to hit an empty net were missed. Throw in Pietrangelo's late icing infractions and porous team defense on the tying goal with 61 seconds left in regulation, and the Blues can find plenty to focus on instead of the botched call.

"We've got to close that game out in my opinion," said head coach Craig Berube, who will do all he can to keep his players focused on moving forward and not looking back. "We should have won it 4-3."

Blues forward Alexander Steen added, "That's (the) playoffs. Got to get ready for Game 4. Mental toughness. This is the Stanley Cup playoffs. You're going to get some bounces. Some bounces aren't going to go your way, so you've just got to move forward."

Which is what everyone involved in the game will attempt. The Blues will try to avoid getting caught up in what might have been, and the Sharks will look to build on the momentum of a win that came because they recovered from their own blown lead. San Jose was ahead 2-0 after the first period Wednesday.

"It's the playoffs," Sharks coach Pete DeBoer said. "We've won stunningly. We've lost stunningly. When you get three rounds deep, you've seen it all. It's just reset and get ready for the next one. It's going to be harder than this one."

Sharks vs Blues NHL betting picks and predictions: Keep riding Over the total

Ryan O'Reilly and the St. Louis Blues will try to avenge a tough overtime loss in Game 3 against the Sharks, as they look to tie up the Western Conference Finals at two games apiece.

After losing a heartbreaking ? and controversial ? decision in Game 3 of the Western Conference final, the St. Louis Blues will almost certainly come out firing as they host the San Jose Sharks in Game 4 Friday night.

The Sharks scored the tying goal with less than a minute left in regulation, then converted the winner in extra time ? aided by a hand pass that wasn't called ? to take a 2-1 series lead and regain the home-ice edge in the best-of-seven series.
San Jose Sharks at St. Louis Blues (-135, 5.5)

QUICK-HITTER

Two truths have emerged with this San Jose team: It is one of the most dangerous offensive units in hockey, and it has struggled mightily to keep the puck out of the net. That said, it has done well in the first period of the past two games, limiting the Blues to just one goal in that stretch. San Jose has been a superior first-period team for the majority of the 2018-19 campaign, finishing tied for the league lead in 1P goals and outscoring St. Louis 4-2 in this series. We like the Sharks to lead after one.

PREDICTION: San Jose first period moneyline (+110)

PERIOD BET

These teams have been surprisingly stout on defense in the final 20 minutes of regulation, producing just four total goals through the first three games of the series. But the same cannot be said for the middle frame, which has seen an incredible amount of offense so far. The Blues and Sharks have combined to score 13 of their 24 total goals in the second period, with five of those coming in the Sharks' stunning Game 3 triumph. Why not ride that wave into Game 4?

PREDICTION: Highest scoring period: Period 2 (+240)

TEAM/PLAYER BET

Each team has scored three or more goals five out of six times in the series, with only the Sharks falling short in their 4-2 home setback in Game 2. And they can blame a lack of discipline in that regard, as they handed the Blues five power-play opportunities that left San Jose shorthanded for an entire half-period worth of playing time. A more disciplined Sharks team should not only reach the three-goal mark, but is a solid bet to get there first; it's at least worth a look at these odds.

PREDICTION: Race to 3 goals: San Jose (+175)

FULL-GAME TOTAL

While these teams have averaged eight total goals per game in the Western Conference final, oddsmakers have refused to budge on the total, only shifting the odds on the Over or the Under slightly in favor of the former. There's nothing to suggest that either defense unit or goaltender can slow down the other side, with the teams combining for an .860 save percentage despite having gone just 2-for-14 with the man advantage. This looks like a great time for another O5.5 play.

PREDICTION: Over 5.5

FULL-GAME SIDE

Teams generally respond to gut-punch losses in two ways: Either they rally around the loss, or they come out deflated. Even if St. Louis can tighten things up ? and avoid another critical non-call going their way ? it's worth considering that the Blues have now won just three of their eight home games during the Stanley Cup playoffs, and are a minus-5 in goal differential in those contests. San Jose has the more consistent offense, and shouldn't need a blown call to prevail in this one.

Binnington sparkles, Blues top Sharks

ST. LOUIS (AP) Jordan Binnington made 29 saves to set a franchise record with his 10th playoff win this postseason and the St. Louis Blues edged the San Jose Sharks 2-1 on Friday night to even the Western Conference final at two games apiece.

Tyler Bozak and Ivan Barbashev scored in the first period for the Blues, giving Binnington all the scoring he needed.

Tomas Hertl scored for the Sharks, and Martin Jones made 20 saves.

Game 5 is in San Jose on Sunday.

Barbashev gave the Blues a quick lead when his shot deflected off of Gustav Nyquist's stick and into the net just 35 seconds in. Alexander Steen's hip check of Brent Burns behind the Sharks' net created a turnover that led to Barbashev's first career playoff goal.

There have been seven goals scored in the opening minute of playoff games this year, with three of them coming against San Jose - the most since the Boston Bruins allowed four during their Stanley Cup run in 2011.

The Blues needed just 9 seconds to convert on a power play as Bozak's shot found its way through several skates and past Jones to make it 2-0 with 2:07 left in the first.

San Jose tilted the ice in its favor in the second period, but Binnington stopped all 11 shots the Sharks sent his way. Burns had the Sharks' best chance, hitting the crossbar with about three minutes left in the period.

Hertl banged home a rebound off of a slap shot by Burns on the Sharks' second power play of the game at 6:48 of the third period to cut the Blues' lead to 2-1. The goal snapped San Jose's scoreless streak of 226 minutes, 48 seconds in Game 4s in a playoff series dating to last year's postseason.

Soccer star Becky Sauerbrunn was at the game. The U.S. women's national team played a friendly against New Zealand at Busch Stadium on Thursday night.
