Walker scores 29 to lead Celtics past Mavericks 116-106
November 12, 2019
By The Associated Press

BOSTON (AP) Kemba Walker made a trio of key 3-pointers in the fourth quarter and finished with 29 points, Jaylen Brown added 25 points and 11 rebounds, and Boston beat the Dallas Mavericks 116-106 Monday night in the Celtics' first game since Gordon Hayward had surgery on his broken left hand.

Marcus Smart scored 17 points, Daniel Theis chipped in with 11 and Brad Wanamaker had 10 for Boston, which won its eighth straight game since a season-opening loss at Philadelphia.

Jayson Tatum shot 1 for 18 from the field and scored only five points for the Celtics.

Luka Doncic led the Mavericks (6-4) with 34 points, nine assists and six rebounds. Kristaps Porzingis scored just four points on 1-of-11 shooting.

The Celtics released a statement during the opening quarter that said Hayward had surgery Monday to repair a fracture in his non-shooting hand. He was injured during their previous game in San Antonio when he collided with LaMarcus Aldridge as the Spurs' big man set a screen.

ROCKETS 122, PELICANS 116

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - James Harden scored 39 points, including 13 straight during a 2:10 span in the fourth quarter, and Houston beat short-handed New Orleans.

Russell Westbrook had 26 points and Clint Capela added 11 points and 20 rebounds to help the Rockets to their fourth straight win.

JJ Redick had 24 points, Josh Hart scored 19, and Jrue Holiday added 18 points, 11 assists and nine rebounds for the Pelicans, who played without leading scorer Brandon Ingram due to a sore right knee.

New Orleans pulled to 97-93 on a four-point play by Redick before Harden's scoring burst in a 2:10 span gave the Rockets a 110-93 lead with 5:20 left.

GRIZZLIES 113, SPURS 109

SAN ANTONIO (AP) - Jaren Jackson Jr. had 24 points and Memphis put a damper on Tony Parker's jersey retirement by beating San Antonio.

Parker's uniform No. 9 was lifted to the rafters alongside fellow Big Three members Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili following the game. They led San Antonio to four of its five championships and have the most wins (541) of any trio in NBA history.

Jackson was involved in two pivotal plays with the Grizzlies up 111-109 in the final minute. His 3-pointer with 25.5 seconds left was overturned when replays determined he was out of bounds. Jackson then blocked DeMar DeRozan's ensuing drive to maintain Memphis' two-point advantage.

Memphis won a coach's challenge that overturned a foul that would have put DeRozan on the line with the Spurs trailing 113-109.

Dillon Brooks had 21 points and Jonas Valanciunas added 18 points and 12 rebounds for Memphis, which had lost two straight and five of six.

LaMarcus Aldridge scored 19 points, Rudy Gay added 18 and DeRozan had 12 as San Antonio took its second consecutive home loss.

TIMBERWOLVES 120, PISTONS 114

DETROIT (AP) - Andrew Wiggins scored 33 points and Minnesota spoiled Blake Griffin's return from injury, beating Detroit.

Griffin played for the first time this season, coming back from hamstring and knee issues. Derrick Rose also returned to the Pistons lineup from a strained hamstring, but both he and Griffin played limited minutes.

Griffin scored 19 points and Rose had just six.

Karl-Anthony Towns scored 25 for the Timberwolves, who led by 19 in the third quarter and snapped an eight-game losing streak to the Pistons.

A 3-pointer by Detroit's Tony Snell made it 109-104, but Towns drew a double team at the other end and passed to an open Wiggins, whose 3-pointer restored the lead to eight.

Luke Kennard led the Pistons with 25 points.

Tuesday?s 6-pack

Interesting college football games this weekend:

? Indiana @ Penn State (-14)

? Minnesota @ Iowa (-3)

? Arizona State (-2.5) @ Oregon State

? Georgia (-3) @ Auburn

? Texas @ Iowa State (-6.5)

? TCU (-3) @ Texas Tech

Quote of the Day
?You think you know, but you just don?t know ? And you never will.?
Jim Mora Sr, addressing the media back in his coaching days

Tuesday?s quiz
Where did Kawhi Leonard play his college basketball?

Monday?s quiz
Half (16) of NFL teams have started the same QB in every game this season.

Sunday?s quiz
Les Miles was LSU?s football coach the last time they beat Alabama.

Tuesday?s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but??

13) Whenever I see the commercials where the guy buys his wife a Lexus or a big truck for Christmas, I laugh at myself for the gifts I bought my ex-wife when we were married; guess I was a slacker, but then I think of this question:

Say you buy your wife a Lexus for Christmas this year; what do you buy her next year? Can?t be setting the bar too high, ya know?

12) If I was the school president or AD at a school in a big time football league, and my team was a 43-point underdog to a team in our same league, I?d be asking some tough questions about our coaching staff or our school?s commitment to the sport.

Then when our team lost that game 73-14, I?d be looking for a new bleeping coach.

11) Arkansas fired football coach Chad Morris after he lost 18 of his first 22 games, including a 45-19 loss to Western Kentucky Saturday, and they were favored in that game.

10) Seton Hall?s star G Myles Powell will be sidelined indefinitely with an ankle injury; he began the season as the Big East Preseason Player of the Year.

9) Indiana Hoosiers? football team is ranked in the top 25 for the first time in 25 years.

8) University of Maine?s basketball team has 13 international players; LMU has seven. More and more, low/mid-majors are recruiting international kids.

7) NBA stuff:
? Toronto Raptors? PG Kyle Lowry broke his thumb, is out for a couple weeks.
? Celtics? F Gordon Hayward broke his left hand.

6) I?m curious how much cash Allstate ponies up to sponsor the nets behind the goal posts at the college football games. They?ve been doing it for long time now.

5) Pro golfer Eddie Pepperell was disqualified from the Turkish Airlines Open on Saturday when he ran out of golf balls; seriously.

Pepperell hit as many as five balls ? his playing partners were unsure ? into the water on the par-5 4th hole. He had putted with a wedge on the previous hole; sounds little bit like he wanted to get the hell out of Turkey.

4) USC 31, Arizona State 26? Trojans? freshman QB Kevin Slovis threw for 432 yards and four TD?s in his homecoming game to the Phoenix area; 297 of those yards and all four TD?s came in the first quarter.

3) San Diego Padres are going back to brown/white uniforms next season, their original colors, and that is a good thing.

2) Seahawks 27, 49ers 24 OT:
? Unusually intense game, had the feel of a playoff game.
? Seahawks had two offensive TD drives; they were only 16-24 yards.
? This was first of four consecutive primetime games for Seattle.

? Each team had five sacks and scored a defensive TD.
? Teams combined for seven turnovers.
? 49ers missed a 47-yard FG in OT that would?ve won game.

1) Redskins named Dwayne Haskins starting QB for the rest of the season.

Injuries Hinder East's Beasts

The basketball gods may try to be telling us they don?t care for the NBA dipping their toe into coach?s challenges.

That's as good a guess as any when trying to make sense of all the early injuries that have crept up on teams over the season?s first few weeks.

Players aren?t spraining their ankles with more frequency just because the season started earlier but it sure does seem like that?s going around the flu bug tends to this time of year. Kings point guard De?Aaron Fox suffered his late in practice on Monday and will be re-evaluated at the end of the month.

Toronto?s Serge Ibaka suffered his sprain on Friday night against the Pelicans. The Raptors were pressing forward without him and point guard Kyle Lowry in splitting a pair of games at Staples Center when Clippers? shooter Landry Shamet was helped to the locker room in the fourth quarter of L.A.?s 98-88 win late Monday.

Boston?s Gordon Hayward broke his hand over the weekend, just as he was finally back to playing at the All-Star level he attained with Utah that earned him a max contract. Considering he suffered a horrific leg injury just over five minutes into his regular-season debut with the Celtics, casual fans were just starting to enjoy his skill set since he was a shell of himself last season as he recovered physically and struggled to regain his form. In wins over the Bucks, Knicks, Cavs and Hornets prior to sustaining his injury, Hayward made 40 of 64 shots (62.5 percent), which included a perfect 16-for-16 from inside the arc in a 39-point game against the Cavs. He averaged 23.3 points, nine rebounds and 6.3 assists and shot 38 percent from 3-point range. He looked like himself again.

On Monday, he underwent surgery to repair the fracture and will be out at least a month.

Of the top 11 teams in the Eastern Conference, nine of them are dealing with the absence of one of their top players. Only the Magic and Nets have avoided major disruptions to date, and we?re including Brooklyn because it knows its not getting Kevin Durant back this season.

The Raptors will rely on Pascal Siakam as their driving force with Lowry out and will be Fred VanVleet?s team to run. Norman Powell has moved into the starting lineup and Chris Boucher has performed nicely taking Ibaka?s minutes, which helped Toronto upset the Lakers as double-digit underdogs on Sunday. The war of attrition is starting early so while survival of the fittest doesn?t apply, we?re going to see who is most resourceful over the next few weeks.

Bucks? All-Star Khris Middleton suffered a thigh contusion in Sunday?s win in Oklahoma City and has been ruled out 3-4 weeks. After breaking through and earning his first All-Star nod last season, he?s averaged 18.5 points and shot over 40 percent from 3-point range as the most important member of Giannis Antetokounmpo?s supporting cast. The Bucks have failed to cover in three straight games entering Thursday?s matchup with the Bulls and will rely on Sterling Brown, Donte DiVincenzo and Pat Connaughton on the wing to make up for Middleton?s absence.

Heat wing Justise Winslow, a difference-maker on both sides of the ball who is off to a tremendous start, has been out with a back issue. Winslow and Jimmy Butler have played all of two games together and have yet to do so well. Winslow shot 1-for-7 in a win over Atlanta two weeks ago in the first game they played and Butler finished a minus-23 in a 109-89 loss in Denver, shooting 3-for-12. There are a lot of cooks in Miami?s kitchen, but Erik Spoelstra needs to get those two going.

Blake Griffin made his season debut in Monday?s home loss to Minnesota and center Andre Drummond had his worst game of the season, finishing with season-lows in points and rebounds. He?d been averaging 20 points and an NBA-high 18 boards per game in playing with tremendous energy, so Pistons head coach Dwane Casey will need to make sure he remains as engaged as he?s been. Derrick Rose was also returning from a hamstring injury and started instead of coming off the bench, so you?ll probably want to see how all the pieces fit since there?s bound to be an adjustment period.

The Timberwolves defeated Detroit 120-114 despite the absence of ill point guard Jeff Teague and his backup, Shabazz Napier, out with a hamstring issue. Afterward, Rose criticized his team?s effort and wondered aloud if they wanted to work hard or get spanked every night. At least they have guys who care now. Following Tuesday?s visit to Miami, the Pistons will have plenty of time to develop chemistry through actual practices since they?ll play just one other game (Friday in Charlotte) between now and next Wednesday.

Indiana may see center Myles Turner return to action from his ankle sprain sometime this week since he?s been out all month since needing help off the floor 10 minutes into a win in Brooklyn on Oct. 30. Thanks to Domantas Sabonis stepping into the lineup, the Pacers have flourished in winning six of seven and have seen the ?over? go 3-0-1 over their past four entering Tuesday?s home date with Indiana.

Malcolm Brogdon?s ability to create easy offense in the pick-and-roll has helped overcome injuries to both Turner and new shooting guard Jeremy Lamb, who had looked sharp in averaging 17 points per game and scoring in double-figures in all five of his starts prior to spraining an ankle. Nate McMillan needed to develop some depth and has gotten increased run for the likes of Goga Bitadze, T.J. Leaf and the Holiday brothers out of necessity. Doug McDermott has been a force off the bench in helping overcome Lamb?s absence, which has turned Indiana into a team that relies on offense more than its defense. Once Turner returns, that may change given his shot-blocking and the likelihood the offense efficiency will decrease if Sabonis returns to a reserve role.

Ben Simmons suffered a shoulder sprain that the 76ers are rightfully being cautious with, so he may be absent all week as Philadelphia hits the road following Tuesday?s home date with the Cavs. Stops in Orlando, Oklahoma City and for a rematch with Cleveland on Sunday may require the Sixers to continue running offense through Joel Embiid and Tobias Harris. Newcomers Raul Neto and Trey Burke have been playing at the point, but Philly lost three straight in Phoenix, Utah and Denver before returning home to defeat the Hornets and Sunday. The blew a substantial lead to the Nuggets in the fourth quarter to close out their disappointing and trip, but Simmons hadn?t been playing well late in games as is. Closing out contests will be a challenge Brett Brown will have to find a better answer for if his team is going to challenge for the Eastern Conference title as most expect.

Atlanta is relying on Jabari Parker as Trae Young?s pick-and-roll parker with productive results in attempting to survive John Collins? 25-game suspension, so you can count on the former No. 2 pick to opt out of his current deal and secure a larger payday via free agency if he stays healthy.

Over the next month, making the best of it is all most of the Eastern Conference can do, so teams will be hoping guys step up as Parker has to make the most of their increased minutes. Boston has set the pace with eight straight wins entering Wednesday?s home date with the Wizards by overcoming Jaylen Brown being out of the lineup in addition to the season-long absence of projected starting center Enes Kanter, who is set to join the rotation. Brown is back as Hayward heals and the dance continues.

What?s going on with??

Paul George

A major piece to the puzzle of intelligently handicapping this NBA title race should drop this week since the Clippers are going to get Kawhi Leonard's preferred tag-team partner out onto the floor for his Clippers' debut. The wing whose acquistion from OKC secured Leonard's signature in free agency should play in Wednesday's visit to Houston or Thursday's trip to Oklahoma City.

Although I anticipate that we'll see George and Leonard alternate maintenance days during back-to-backs to ensure at least one of them is out there playing catalyst, it makes most sense to see them out on the floor together early in their partnership, so it will be interesting to see how Doc Rivers handles this quick road trip. The Clippers return to Staples Center on Saturday for a date withthe Hawks and will spend all of next week in town thanks to a five-game homestand that will help George sink his teeth into playing in front of friends and family in his hometown. Look for L.A. to be a double-digit favorite against the Hawks and Thunder prior to more challenging games against the visiting Celtics and Rockets.

Brandon Ingram

The Pelicans' forward was scratched on Monday night after not feeling right in warmups, leading to him being scratched from an eventual loss to the Rockets. He's averaging nearly 26 points per game and has scored efficiently despite New Orleans struggling to secure wins, so they're going to be catching a lot of points with games against the Clippers, Heat and Trail Blazers coming up.if he misses substantial time. Ingram appeared to hyperextend his knee in the final minute of Saturday's win in Charlotte but he carried no injury designation into Monday's game against Houston before being scratched.

Jrue Holiday has started too slowly to trust to help carry the Pels without Ingram in tow, especially with Lonzo Ball still out due to an adductor strain injury and Zion Williamson probably still another month away from his debut. It's getting late early for those who felt the Pelicans would be a playoff team.

The Warriors

Draymond Green returned from a finger injury and ultimately got himself thrown out of a frustrating loss to Utah arguing calls, so he's clearly working through his frustrations right now. The Dubs went on a 3-1-1 ATS run before suffering Monday night's blowout loss thanks to the return of D'Angelo Russell, Alec Burks and Willie Cauley-Stein. I don't think we'll see Stephen Curry again this season, but Green needing to keep his competitive juices flowing should signal that you need to exercise caution before blindly fading this group like you were right to early in the season. They're attempting to defend now. If Kevon Looney is able to retun and provide another rim protector, there's a chance that a 60-loss season can be avoided.

Injuries to Monitor

That there's still a need for this space despite this column being mostly about injuries tells you all you need to know about the NBA's current state because only items that haven't been covered will appear here. Shamet's sprain looked like one that could linger, so George's return may not affect anyone's minutes early if he just inherits Shamet's. Rodney McGruder checked in when the sharp-shooter went down to keep Rivers' rotations intact, so he may see some action... Fox's injury is extremely unfortunate since Sacramento has struggled out of the gate after losing Marvin Bagley early. Bogdan Bogdanovic is likely to see more action and offseason acquisition Cory Joseph will probably start until Swiper returns, but the Kings' preferred pace and defensive intensity is likely to be affected... The Blazers have seen Rodney Hood be compromised by back spasms and are hoping that the foot sprain center Hassan Whiteside is playing through doesn't become a bigger issue but they've seen kids Anfernee Simons and Nassir Little respond to increased roles. Mario Hezonja has also been relied upon as a small-ball four... Rockets starting forward Danuel House has been productive all season but fell hard on his back in the team's last game and is banged up. There's no word on the severity yet... Charlotte rookie P.J. Washington suffered a mild ankle sprain against New Orleans in the same game where Ingram tweaked his knee, so he may not be as explosive for the Hornets as they open a manageable streatch against the Griz, Pistons and Knicks this week.

Games to Watch

Tuesday - Hawks at Nuggets

We'll see if a third straight Nikola Jokic game-winner is neceassry, which is entirely possible since Denver has been playing down to its level of competition and has only covered a spread once in its last six games entering this one. The Nuggets opened as a 12-point favorite but have only looked dominant at Pepsi Center once. They narrowly beat the Suns in their home opener, lost to Dallas, blew out Miami and were down big vs. the 76ers before their late rally. The Nuggets squandered a large lead of their own on Sunday before Jokic's fadeaway winner over Karl-Anthony Towns prevented a second OT. Despite not looking particularly sharp, Denver opens the week on a four-game winning streak.

Wednesday - Clippers at Rockets
Hopefully we see George here, teaming with Leonard against fellow L.A. natives James Harden and Russell Westbrook. We've all been good and deserve this. Harden is averaging 37.3 points per game entering this nationally-televised Western Conference clash, the highest scoring ouput through 10 games over the past 50 years. Harden scored 39 vs. the Pels to surpass Michael Jordan's mark of 36.9 set in both '86 and '88.

Thursday - Mavs at Knicks
Kristaps Porzingis comes through Madison Square Garden for the first time but isn't going to be bringing much positive momentum into his return after stinking it up at TD Garden in Monday's loss to the Celtics. If he and Luka Doncic can get it going here and turn the arena against the Knicks via boo birds, there's a good chance David Fizdale won't need to be at work on Friday morning since he's being set up as the fall guys for New York's awful start..

Friday - Jazz at Grizzlies
Mike Conley has already confessed he'll likely need tissues for this one as he makes his first visit to Memphis in a Jazz jersey. The veteran point guard is the Grizzlies' all-time leader in a number of categories and will undoubtedly get a standing ovation. He's been playing much better of late, displaying improved chemistry with Rudy Gobert, who rightfully demanded the ball more last week.

Saturday - Blazers at Spurs
LaMarcus Aldridge has overome his slow start and will look to get the better of Whiteside and his former team, but San Antonio has unexpectedly been no sure thing at home early on. The Spurs will bring a 4-3 record at AT&T Center into this one after being upset as a double-digit favorite by Memphis on Monday despite a packed house for Tony Parker's post-game jersey retirement ceremony.

Sunday - Hawks at Lakers
The Lakers may have Rajon Rondo back by this point, but I'd expect Avery Badley to get the bulk of the time at the point against Trae Young. Count on L.A. being favored by at least 12 points considering the young Hawks will be playing on the second night of a back-to-back after facing the Clips the previous night. Considering they'll be spending Saturday night in L.A. in between games, the number might end up being closer to 15.

BIG TROUBLE

The Philadelphia 76ers host the Cleveland Cavaliers as 10-point home favorites and Sixers star center Joel Embiid has a chance to dominate this game. The Cavs are allowing the seventh most points in the paint per game in the NBA at 50.7. Meanwhile, the 76ers have been ultra-efficient in the paint averaging 58.7 per game on their home court this season.

With Al Horford out, expect Embiid to capitalize off the vulnerable Cavs defense inside. He should have a big night filling the stat line, and in turn, so should the Sixers. Bet Over Philadelphia's team total of 114.5.

HOME COOKING

The Indiana Pacers have done well on their home court this season, winning four of their first five games there and now host an Oklahoma City Thunder team as 2-point home favorites. While the Thunder have lost six straight road games dating back to last season, including 0-3 this year.

Although they are not scoring a lot of points per game, the Pacers are one of the most efficient teams in the Association in terms of shooting percentage at 47.1 percent from the floor. Look for Indiana to take advantage of a weak Thunder road defense that is allowing 112.3 points per game away from home, and 116.7 over their most recent three overall. Bet Indiana on the moneyline.

STARTING QUICK

The Utah Jazz play on the tail end of a back-to-back when they host the Brooklyn Nets as 7-point favorites, after defeating the Golden State Warriors 122-108 on the road last night. The Jazz have been the best team in the Association when it comes to limiting opponents in the first half allowing a very low 45.5 a game, but they could have their hands full with Kyrie Irving and the Nets who have been flying out of the gates.

The Nets have shot the ball well early in games and come in scoring the fifth highest first half points per game at 58.4. With Utah coming off some difficult games versus the Clippers twice, the 76ers, and the Bucks, on top of playing on a back-to-back, expect Brooklyn to take advantage of potential fatigue and take the 3.5-points they?re getting on the first half spread.

A BOOST AT THE POINT

The Phoenix Suns are 2.5-point underdogs at home as the Los Angeles Lakers come into town tonight. Los Angeles comes in hot, having won seven of their last eight games overall and should get a boost to their backcourt as although he listed as questionable, point guard Rajon Rondo is expected to make his season debut for the Lakers.

The Lakers are averaging 110.5 points on the road thus far on 47.5 percent shooting. Although Phoenix has been great at home this season, the edge goes to the Lakers defense who are holding opponents to a very low 36 field goals made per game, second in the NBA only to the Jazz. Take the Lakers on the moneyline.

OH, FOR FOX SAKES

The Sacramento Kings will be without point guard De'Aaron Fox for an extended period of time with an ankle injury and were already missing Marvin Bagley III. Tonight, they host a Portland Trail Blazers team once again without Jusuf Nurkic, Zach Collins, but should have Rodney Hood back in the lineup.

The Kings have struggled versus Western Conference opponents posting a 1-8 SU record over their most recent nine games against conference foes and losing a player like Fox is a huge blow. He has logged six straight games with 30 or more minutes as was shooting the ball very well. It may take some time to adjust to his absence. Take the Blazers on the moneyline.

Davis, James lead Lakers to best 10-game start since 2010
November 13, 2019
By The Associated Press

PHOENIX (AP) Anthony Davis had 24 points and 12 rebounds, Kyle Kuzma added 23 points and the Los Angeles Lakers beat the Phoenix Suns 123-115 on Tuesday night.

The Lakers (8-2) are off to their best 10-game start since 2010 and bounced back from a home loss to Toronto on Sunday. LeBron James added 19 points, 11 assists and seven rebounds.

Phoenix (6-4) trailed for a big chunk of the fourth quarter but pushed ahead 113-111 on Devin Booker's fast-break layup with 3:29 left. The Lakers responded with three straight 3-pointers - one from James and two more from Kuzma - to lead 120-113 and put the game out of reach.

The Suns were led by Ricky Rubio and Booker, who both scored 21 points.

HAWKS 125, NUGGETS 121

DENVER (AP) - Trae Young scored 15 of his season-high 42 points in the fourth quarter and added 11 assists to lead Atlanta past Denver.

Young finished seven points shy of his career high set March 1 against Chicago last season. He was 13 of 21 from the field and finished 8 for 13 on 3-pointers.

Jabari Parker had 20 points and nine rebounds, and Alex Len scored 17 for the Hawks.

Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

Interesting college football games this weekend:

? Wisconsin (-14) @ Nebraska

? Alabama (-20.5) @ Mississippi State

? Florida (-7) @ Missouri

? Michigan State @ Michigan (-13.5)

? Oklahoma (-10) @ Baylor

? Stanford @ Washington State (-11)

**********

Armadillo: Wednesday's Den: Mid-week musings, and NFL knowledge

13) Evansville 67, Kentucky 64? Purple Aces, coached by Kentucky alum Walter McCarty, were a 25-point underdog here; Evansville plays only one senior- they beat Ball State by 4 in their opener. Aces made only 9-30 on the arc, but outrebounded Kentucky.

12) Phil Knight Invitational, Portland OR:
Oregon 82, Memphis 74: Ducks got 17 points from UNLV transfer Juiston, survived 15-27 shooting on foul line and got themselves a quality win. Memphis is really young, and they?re going to improve, so this win will likely look better in March than it does now.

Oklahoma 77, Oregon State 69: Sooners outscored Oregon State 44-37 in 2nd hall; Beavers missed a bunch of layups, as Pac-12 teams split this twinbill in Portland.

11) Seattle Seahawks are 8-2, look like a playoff team, but there is such a fine line between winning and losing in the NFL. Here are some of Seattle?s wins:
Week 1: beat Cincinnati 21-20? Bengals are 0-9.
Week 2: beat Steelers 28-26? Pittsburgh?s backup QB played 2nd half.
Week 5: beat Rams 30-29? Rams missed 41-yard FG on the last play.
Week 6: beat Browns 32-28? Seattle trailed 20-6 in 2nd quarter.
Week 9: beat Buccaneers 40-34 (OT)? Seattle trailed 21-7 in 2nd quarter.
Week 10: beat 49ers 27-24 (OT)? 49ers missed a 47-yard FG in OT.

This is evidence that right now, Russell Wilson is the MVP.

10) Coppin State 76, Loyola Chi 72? This is the Eagles? first non-league win against a D-I team in six years, or 74 non-league games ago. Loyola was only 22-34 on foul line.

9) Sunday is November 17 and is the Atlanta Falcons? first outdoor game this season.

8) Xavier 63, Missouri 58 OT? Teams combined to make 9-46 on the arc, as evidence mounts that moving the arc back 16 inches from where it was LY is going to be a big deal. Both teams shot 33.3% or worse from floor.

7) Chiefs lead NFL, with 16 TD plays of 20+ yards; Dallas is next, with 11.

Giants have allowed 13 TD?s of 20+ yards; Oakland is next, allowing 11.

6) Weird stat of the day; Detroit Pistons have lost their last 14 playoff games, the longest-such streak in NBA history.

5) NBA injuries:
? Celtics? star Gordon Hayward (hand) is out six weeks .
? Rockets? G Eric Gordon (knee) is out for six weeks.
? Kings? G De?Aaron Fox (ankle) is out 3-4 weeks.

NFL statistics, thru 10 weeks:
4) Best red zone offenses:
? Ravens 5.69 pts/possession
? Texans 5.64
? Bills 5.61

Worst red zone offenses:
? Bengals 3.58
? Redskins 3.88
? Browns 3.90

3) Best offenses on drives that start 75+ yards from goal line:
? Ravens 3.39 pts/possession
? Chiefs 2.66
? Cowboys 2.63

Worst offenses on drives that start 75+ yards from goal line:
? Dolphins 0.53
? Jets 0.56
? Redskins 0.71

2) Best red zone defenses:

? Patriots 3.64
? Broncos 3.81

James Harden scores 47 points, Rockets beat Clippers
November 13, 2019
By The Associated Press

James Harden scored 47 points and the Houston Rockets outlasted the Clippers 102-93 in a wild game that saw Los Angeles coach Doc Rivers ejected in the fourth quarter Wednesday night.

Houston was up by two with about two minutes left when former Rocket Patrick Beverley fouled out. Harden made both free throws before grabbing a rebound on the other end and hitting a 3 to make it 95-88.

Beverley was given a technical foul during a timeout after the play and Harden hit the two free throws.

Rivers was then given two technical fouls and ejected to the delight of son Austin Rivers, the Houston guard who laughed and signaled for the officials to T-up his father. Doc Rivers spent several more seconds screaming at the referees before slowly walking across the court and to the locker room.

Harden made both free throws before JaMychal Green made a 3 for Los Angeles. But Harden stole the ball from Kawhi Leonard, and Tyson Chandler made a reverse dunk with 37 seconds left to make it 100-91.

Russell Westbrook added 17 points to help the Rockets win their fifth straight game. Clint Capela had 12 points and 20 rebounds before going to the locker room with about 4 1/2 minutes remaining after taking a blow to the face fighting for a rebound. Leonard led Los Angeles with 26 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists.

LAKERS 120, WARRIORS 94

LOS ANGELES (AP) LeBron James had 23 points and 12 assists in three quarters, Kyle Kuzma added 22 points starting for Anthony Davis, and Los Angeles rolled past Golden State.

The Lakers improved their NBA-best record to 9-2.

Davis sat out because of a sore right shoulder after playing the night before in a victory at Phoenix.

JaVale McGee added 18 points and 17 rebounds for Los Angeles.

Former Laker D'Angelo Russell scored 21 points for Golden State. The Warriors have lost five in a row to drop to 2-10.

CELTICS 140, WIZARDS 133

BOSTON (AP) - Kemba Walker scored 25 points and Boston won its ninth straight, overcoming 44 points from Bradley Beal to beat Washington.

Jayson Tatum bounced back from a historically bad shooting night with 23 points, Jaylen Brown had 22 and Enes Kanter added 13 points and nine rebounds. Boston has not lost since the opener at Philadelphia.

Rui Hachimura scored 21 points Washington, and former Celtics guard Isaiah Thomas had 18 points and had seven assists. The Wizards have lost three straight and six of seven.

RAPTORS 114, TRAIL BLAZERS 106

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Pascal Siakam scored 36 points, Fred VanVleet had 30 and Toronto beat Portland.

Siakam scored 13 of his 36 points in the fourth quarter to help close out the Trail Blazers in a bounce back from Monday night's loss to the Los Angeles Clippers.

Rodney Hood led the Blazers with 25 points.

Damian Lillard, who entered Wednesday trailing only James Harden in points per game, had nine points in his worst outing of the season. He was 2 for 12 from the field.

TIMBERWOLVES 129, SPURS 114

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Andrew Wiggins had 30 points on 12-for-23 shooting and Minnesota handed the San Antonio its third straight loss.

Karl-Anthony Towns scored 28 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, giving Minnesota's maximum-contract duo a third consecutive game with 25-plus points apiece. Towns and Wiggins are the only teammates in the NBA averaging more than 25 points per game. Wiggins added eight rebounds and seven rebounds,.

DeMar DeRozan had 27 points and LaMarcus Aldridge added 23 points for San Antonio.

MAGIC 112, 76ERS 97

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) - Nikola Vucevic had 25 points and 12 rebounds and Orlando used a big fourth quarter to beat Philadelphia.

Aaron Gordon added 18 points and 13 rebounds, and D.J. Augustin had 12 points and eight assists.

Josh Richardson led the 76ers with 19 points, and Ben Simmons added 18 points, eight rebounds and five assists. 76ers center Joel Embiid sat out because of a sore left knee.

GRIZZLIES 119, HORNETS 117

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Rookie Ja Morant scored on a driving left-handed layup with 0.7 seconds left to lift Memphis.

In his first NBA game in the Carolinas, Morant had his first double-double with 23 points and 11 assists to help the Grizzlies win consecutive games for the first time this season. The South Carolina native was 10 of 15 from the field.

Thursday?s 6-pack

Bottom six teams in 3-point shooting early this season:

? Elon 10%

? Southern Utah 11.4%

? Northwestern 12.5%

? Seattle 13.3%

? Southern 13.6%

? Virginia 16%

There are three other teams who haven?t played a Division I opponent yet.

Thursday?s quiz

Wednesday?s quiz
John Calipari has led UMass, Memphis, Kentucky to a Final Four.

Tuesday?s quiz
Kawhi Leonard played his college basketball at San Diego State

*******************

Thursday?s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud??

13) VCU 84, LSU 82? VCU?s coaches have it in their contracts that if they bolt for greener pa$ture$, their new team has to play a home/home series with VCU; this was Will Wade?s visit back home? he was not warmly received. Guys wearing fake FBI uniforms wee sitting by the LSU bench.

VCU led this game by 15 late in first half, but LSU fought back- they were outscored 23-13 on the foul line. Quality game between two teams I expect to see in March.

12) Ohio State 76, Villanova 51? Buckeyes led this game 40-22 at halftime.

It is very, very early in the season; some teams are way ahead of others. It is easy to overreact to unusual scores, once we get to Thanksgiving, we can begin to do some evaluating.

11) NFL finalized its Week 16 schedule by putting three games on Saturday, Dec 21; Texans-Bucs, Bills-Patriots and Rams-49ers.

10) Rams? injury troubles on the offensive line have contributed to their offense being less explosive; hard to throw longer passes if you?re struggling to protect the QB.

Last year, the Rams had 15 TD plays of 18+ yards; this year, they have three.

9) 46-year old Adam Vinatieri has missed 11 PAT?s/FG?s this year; the Colts have brought in other kickers to try out.

8) Field position is important in football; turnover margin and 3/outs go a long way towards determining field position, especially now that kickoff returns have been greatly reduced.

These teams have forced the most 3/outs this season:

New England 44, San Francisco 41, Philadelphia 34

7) These teams have forced the fewest 3/outs this season:

Arizona, Atlanta, Baltimore, Oakland, all 17.

6) These teams have gone 3/out on offense the most this year:

Bears 46, Jets 44, Redskins 36, Giants 33

5) These teams have gone 3/out on offense the least this year:

Texans 13, Cowboys 14, Ravens/Saints 17, Chiefs 18

4) When Arkansas fired football coach Chad Morris last week, they also lost out on a 4-star QB recruit who happens to be??.Chad Morris? son.

Chandler Morris is rated as the #13 dual-threat QB in the country, in the 2020 class.

3) Mike Piazza is going to coach the Italian team in the 2021 World Baseball Classic.

2) From ESPN Stats: Last week, the Browns had a drive where they ran six plays from the Buffalo 1 or 2-yard line but didn?t score on that drive; that is the first time that has happened in the NFL since December 18, 1993, when the Jets couldn?t score in that situation against Dallas.

1) Jacob deGrom, Justin Verlander both won Cy Young awards Wednesday night; only two players homered off of both of them this season, Adam Eaton and Juan Soto, both of whom homered against Verlander in the World Series.

The wing whose acquisition from OKC secured Leonard's signature in free agency should play in Wednesday's visit to Houston or Thursday's trip to Oklahoma City.

Free Winner

Friday - Wizards at Timberwolves
Count on seeing another one of these totals that approaches 240, but Minnesota has seen Andrew Wiggins take a step forward to start the season and the Timberwolves have scored 120 or more points in three of four entering Wednesday's home game against the Spurs. Washington has surrendered over 120 points in their last two road contests entering Wednesday's visit to Boston and lost 131-109 when the T'Wolves came through D.C. on Nov. 2. Ride the high side here, but be sure to lock in the best number and monitor line moves.

FINDING THE OPEN MAN

The Milwaukee Bucks are the largest favorite of the night, laying 11.5-points as they host the Chicago Bulls. Chicago has only averaged 43.5 percent shooting from the floor, and 106.7 points a game. On the other hand, Milwaukee averages the highest points per game on its home court at 123.3 per contest.

The Bulls have been one of the better teams defending opposing point guards in terms of points per game but have struggled versus the extra pass giving up a very-high 7 assists per contest to that position. Look for Eric Bledsoe to build off his success orchestrating the offense and bet Over his assists total of 5.5.

STARTING QUICK

The Dallas Mavericks get a shot at redemption as Kristaps Porzingis makes his return to Madison Square Garden to take on the New York Knicks as 7.5-point favorites. The Mavs lost 106-102 at home to the Knicks back on Nov. 8 and were not able to overcome the 36 first quarter points they gave up.

It was a shocking result considering the Knicks are the lowest scoring first-half team in the Association averaging 49.1 first half points per game. Tonight, they go up against the highest scoring first half team, as the Mavs are averaging 61.4 points. Look for Dallas to get out to another quick start and back them on the first half spread of 3.5-points.

NEW-LOOK CLIPPERS

The Los Angeles Clippers play on the tail end of a back-to-back when they visit the New Orleans Pelicans after falling 102-93 to the Houston Rockets last night. The Clippers are currently 6-point road faves over the 2-8 Pelicans and even better, Paul George is expected to make his season debut today. However, it is also likely Kawhi Leonard sits this one out for load management.

The Pelicans are one of the worst teams defending opposing point guards allowing an average of 29.3 points, 3.1 made 3-point shots and 9.5 assists per contest. The Clips? Lou Williams has logged big minutes over the last six games and has attempted no less than 15 shots per game throughout that stretch. He's also been active on both sides of the ball and is in a position to thrive versus a weak Pels defense. Bet Over his points, rebounds, assists total.

EFFICIENCY AT ITS FINEST

The Phoenix Suns have won six of their first 10 games this season and they?ll look to make it seven-of-11 when they host the Atlanta Hawks as 7-point favorites.

Devin Booker is having a career high in shooting from the floor and is hitting an incredible 51 percent of his shots from beyond the arc. This is a great game for Booker to take advantage of a Hawks squad that is struggling with its perimeter defense, allowing 25.2 points, and 3.1 made 3-point shots to opposing shooting guards. Look for Booker to get hot and bet Over his points total of 26.5.

A HOT HALF

The Brooklyn Nets hope to improve on their 1-6 road record this season as they travel to Denver to take on the Nuggets, but will be in tough, currently listed as 9-point underdogs. To make matters worse, the Nets will be without Caris LeVert, but Kyrie Irving (shoulder) is upgraded to questionable for the contest. However, the Nets have had success in their last 10 games versus the Nuggets, winning seven outright.

The Nets average the second highest first half points per game with 59.4 and are coming off a game where they put up 68 in the first half against the Jazz on Tuesday night. Meanwhile, the Nuggets have been slow starters averaging 49.6 first half points per game. Look for Brooklyn to keep things close early on and bet them on the first half spread getting 5-points.

Pelicans top Clippers in PG's debut
November 14, 2019
By The Associated Press

NEW ORLEANS (AP) Jrue Holiday scored 36 points and stole the ball from Paul George three times in the final minutes to spoil George???s season debut and lead the New Orleans Pelicans to a 132-127 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers on Thursday night.

George was playing for the first time since signing as a free agent with the Clippers because he???d been recovering from shoulder surgery last spring. He did not appear rusty, scoring 33 points in 24 minutes, only to be done in by late turnovers at the hands of Holiday, who finished with six steals, including one on Lou Williams??? attempted bounce pass in the final seconds to seal the victory.

Derrick Favors had 20 points and a career-best 20 rebounds in the first 20-20 game of his 10-year career. Frank Jackson added 23 points in a reserve role.

The Clippers played without Kawhi Leonard, who was being rested for the third time this season to ease stress on his sore knee after playing a night earlier in a loss at Houston. But the Pelicans were hardly sympathetic with starters Brandon Ingram (right knee) and Lonzo Ball (groin) sidelined, as well.

J.J. Reddick scored 19 and hit two free throws with 11.4 seconds left to help wrap up just New Orleans??? third victory in 11 games this season.

Williams scored 31 points and Rodney McGruder 20 for the Clippers, who???ve dropped two straight.

HEAT 108, CAVALIERS 97

CLEVELAND (AP) - Rookie Kendrick Nunn scored 23 points, Bam Adebayo had 16 points and 15 rebounds, and Miami beat Cleveland.

Miami led the entire game and was up by 27 points in the third quarter. The Heat (8-3) have the second-best record in the Eastern Conference.

Rookie Tyler Herro, who missed Tuesday's game with an ankle injury, had 16 points, while Jimmy Butler finished with 14 for Miami. The Heat shot 43 of 79 from the field and made 12 of 30 from 3-point range.

Kevin Love had 21 points and 10 rebounds for Cleveland, while Collin Sexton added 15 points.

KNICKS 106, MAVERICKS 103

NEW YORK (AP) - Marcus Morris made a tiebreaking 3-pointer with 13.2 seconds remaining to delight a Madison Square Garden crowd that booed Kristaps Porzingis all night, and New York beat Dallas.

Morris also knocked away the Mavericks??? inbounds pass with under a second left, sending the Knicks to just their third victory in 12 games this season.

Porzingis finished with 20 points and 11 rebounds in his first game in New York as a visitor. Luka Doncic had 33 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds in his fifth triple-double of the season.

Porzingis was the No. 4 pick in the 2015 draft who developed first into a fan favorite and then an All-Star. But he soured on the Knicks, and the fans have clearly soured on him.

Morris scored 20 points and Julius Randle had 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Knicks.

BUCKS 124, BULLS 115

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Giannis Antetokounmpo had 38 points and 15 rebounds, Eric Bledsoe added a season-high 31 points and eight assists and Milwaukee withstood another historic effort by Chicago rookie Coby White.

White shot 5 of 8 from 3-point range in the first half, becoming the youngest player in NBA history to hit five 3-pointers in consecutive games. The 19-year-old seventh overall pick in the 2019 draft set an NBA rookie record Tuesday night, making seven 3-pointers in the fourth quarter of a 120-102 victory over the New York Knicks. White finished Thursday with a team-high 26 points, including six 3s.

Antetokounmpo had at least 30-plus points for the seventh game this season for the Bucks, who played without Khris Middleton. The All-Star forward is expected to miss the next three to four weeks with a thigh bruise.

Donte DiVincenzo, who made his first career start in place of Middleton, had four points and four rebounds.

Zach LaVine added 25 points and seven assists before fouling out for the Bulls.

SUNS 128, HAWKS 112

PHOENIX (AP) - Kelly Oubre Jr. scored a season-high 30 points, Devin Booker added 27 and Phoenix beat Atlanta.

Phoenix (7-4) is off to its best start through 11 games since 2009, when they started 9-2.

Dario Saric added 23 points after shooting 9 of 12 from the field, including 3 of 5 from 3-point range.

Atlanta (4-7) was led by Jabari Parker, who scored 24 points. Trae Young had 21 points and 13 assists two nights after a 42-point, 11-assist performance in a win over Denver.

NUGGETS 101, NETS 93

DENVER (AP) - Nikola Jokic had 18 points and 10 rebounds, Mason Plumlee provided a boost off the bench as Denver wore down Brooklyn.

The Nets were playing their fourth road game in seven nights. They shot 23% in the second half.

Paul Millsap added 18 points for a Nuggets team that???s proving adept at rallying late.

Kyrie Irving had 17 points and nine assists despite a sore right shoulder. Irving was questionable earlier in the day but got treatment and was ready to go by game time.

DeAndre Jordan had an interesting stat line - 11 rebounds and no points. Jarrett Allen added 17 points and 10 boards as the Nets dropped to 1-3 on their five-game trip.
