Schmaltz helps Coyotes beat Sabres in shootout
October 28, 2019
By The Associated Press

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) J.T. Miller had two goals and the Vancouver Canucks scored five times in the first period on their way to a 7-2 victory over the Florida Panthers on Monday night.

Vancouver got on the board less than two minutes in and kept up offensive pressure that overwhelmed the Panthers much of the game.

Josh Leivo had a goal and an assist for the Canucks. Brandon Sutter, Tim Schaller, Jake Virtanen and Brock Boeser also scored. Alex Edler and Elias Pettersson contributed three assists apiece.

Brian Boyle and Mike Hoffman scored for Florida, but the loss snapped an eight-game point streak (4-0-4).

Canucks goalie Thatcher Demko made his fourth start of the season and stopped 27 shots.

COYOTES 3, SABRES 2, SO

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Nick Schmaltz scored in the shootout, leading the Coyotes to the road win.

Conor Garland and Carl Soderberg scored in regulation for Arizona (7-3-1). Darcy Kuemper made 24 saves and stopped all three Sabres attempts in the shootout.

Schmaltz scored the game-winner on a low shot to the glove side.

Jack Eichel and Jeff Skinner scored for Buffalo (9-2-2), which had won four of five. Carter Hutton made 41 saves.

The Coyotes dominated the last part of the game, outshooting the Sabres 30-15 over the final two periods.

Both teams had prime scoring opportunities in overtime. The Sabres hit the post twice, and Arizona's Clayton Keller nearly found himself with an empty net after Hutton mishandled the puck.

Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Six of the highest-paid college basketball coaches:

? Mike Krzyzewski, Duke $8.98M/year

? John Calipari, Kentucky $8.04M

? Mick Cronin, UCLA $5.5M

? Rick Barnes, Tennessee $4.7M

? Bill Self, Kansas $4.48M

? Chris Beard, Texas Tech $4.2M

**********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Glad to be back??

13) Here is a pro tip if you?re having surgery; go to the right bleepin? hospital.

Thats right, I show up 20 minutes early for my operation last Tuesday, but turns out I?m at Albany Medical Center when I?m supposed to be at Albany Memorial Hospital, which according to Mapquest, is 2.6 miles away. Not good, but we got there and the staff at Memorial couldn?t have been nicer.

12) Backtracking a little bit, couple of Saturdays ago I?m sitting in the sportsbook at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, watching college football and talking with a buddy, when the vision in my right eye became foggy. Had no idea what the problem was, but it didn?t get better, and after flying home that Tuesday, it got way worse. Turns out the retina in my right eye had detached.

On October 22 (the 47th anniversary of the Oakland A?s first World Series title), I had my right eye operated on, and now I wait and hope it bounces back to where it was. In the meantime, I?d like to thank anyone who sent a text, e-mail or called to offer help/best wishes. Much appreciated.

? Thanks to Dr Mallick, who was my eye surgeon; appreciate you answering all my questions, and obviously, thanks a lot for putting my eye back together. Thanks isn?t really enough to say, but I really appreciate your work.

11) Part of rehabbing your re-attached retina is having your head pointed down a lot, so I?m listening to TV more than watching it; two observations:

a) Joe Buck is very good at baseball play-by-play.
b) 86-year old Hubie Brown is still great fun to listen to on NBA games.

10) When Washington Nationals? OF Juan Soto was 10 years old, he played on an all-star team in the Dominican Republic that was coached by Robinson Cano?s father.

9) Since the start of last season, 56.4% of NBA players have changed teams, an amazing stat. NBA is the only league where the preseason is more interesting than the regular season.

8) A friend of mine here in Albany is opening a bar/golf simulator soon in Guilderland, out on Route 20 by Western Turnpike golf course. It is going to be called The Bunker, and once I get out and about more, I?ll give you an in-person report, but it sounds like an excellent place to hang out and have fun with friends.

7) Major league managerial hirings:
? Cubs hired David Ross, who was an active player only three years ago.
? Phillies hired Joe Girardi, an excellent hire.
? Angels announced hiring of Joe Maddon; he worked for the Halos for 30 years before he became a big league skipper in Tampa Bay.
? Maddon hired former Mets? skipper Mickey Callaway as his pitching coach.
? Padres hired 38-year old Jayce Tingler, who worked for years in the Texas Rangers? system.

6) Last Wednesday, the first full night of NBA games, 22 Kentucky alums played and first thing Thursday morning, John Calipari posted all their stats on Twitter. Effective recruiting tool.

5) NFL knowledge:
? Denver QB Joe Flacco (neck) is out for this week?s game with Cleveland. Brandon Allen is the new starter; he has never taken an NFL snap. Allen started for 2.5 years at Arkansas, where the Hogs went 15-11 his junior/senior seasons.
? Chargers fired OC Ken Whisenhunt Monday night.
? Texans? star DE JJ Watt is done for the season (torn pectoral muscle).

4) From ESPN stats: New Jersey Jets are first NFL team since the ?91 Colts who, through seven games, have fewer than 450 yards rushing, while giving up 200+ yards in sacks.

3) Of the 64 teams who trailed a World Series 3-2, 20 of them came back to win the Series.

2) Good news/bad news after my eye surgery:
Bad news: Had to cancel my annual Christmas trip to Las Vegas; can?t fly for a couple months after the surgery. I?ll survive, but I?ve enjoyed spending my birthday/Christmas in the desert.

Good news: Looking like a March trip instead; second weekend of NCAA tournament, and first week of baseball season.

1) Steelers 27, Dolphins 14? Monday, a gambler at South Point Casino in Las Vegas risked $100,000 to win $11,764.70 on the Steelers? money line. He had to sweat some in the first half, but he won his 11 grand.

Saturday, someone risked $5,040 to win $210 on Oklahoma?s money line to beat Kansas State; the Sooners lost, once again proving Oscar Madison?s old line from The Odd Couple:

?There?s no such thing as a sure thing; thats why they call it gambling.?

In the Crease - Week 5

Buffalo Shuffle

Last season the Carolina Hurricanes broke a decade-long playoff drought, so the Buffalo Sabres are next up to try and end their dry spell. The Sabres haven't made the NHL postseason since 2010-11, but if things continue the way they are going, that figures to change this season. Entering play on Tuesday they were 9-2-1-1 across 13 games, leading the Eastern Conference with 20 points. That includes an impressive 5-0-0-1 record at home. In addition, they have a plus-11 goal differential, tied for fourth in the NHL and second in the East.

Looking Ahead

Tuesday, Oct. 29

Philadelphia at Pittsburgh:
The Flyers head into their Keystone State battle against the Penguins with some pretty impressive offense. They have racked up 3.6 goals per game to rank sixth in the NHL, and Philly doesn't get cheated on shots on goal. They have managed 35.9 SOG this season to rank second in the NHL. Philly's power play has been legit, too, hitting at a 28.6 percent clip on the man advantage. People might be surprised to hear C Travis Konecny is the team leader with 13 points, just one behind Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby (14). The Pens haven't been as fortunate on the power play, ranking just 21st at 17.6 percent while ranking a middling 17th on the jill at 80.8 percent.

Minnesota at Dallas:
The Wild have been dismal on the road, winning just once in the past seven away from the Twin Cities. They have a good chance to end that in the Metroplex, as the Stars are dead-last in the NHL with just 2.1 goals per game. They're 29th in SOG (28.0) per game while hitting at just 8.8 percent on the power play to rank 28th. Defensively the Stars have done their goaltender no favors, ranking third in shots allowed (29.0). They're so-so on the penalty kill at 82.9 percent. The 'under' has cashed in each of the past four meetings in Dallas, and is 5-0-1 in the past six in this series.

Winnipeg at Anaheim:
Connor Hellebuyck and John Gibson are set to square off in an impressive goaltending duel on 'The Pond'. Hellebuyck is just 5-4-0, but he has an impressive 2.22 goals-against average and .933 save percentage with one shutout. Gibson is just 4-6-0, but he has a respectable 2.52 GAA and .923 save percentage. Unfortunately when Gibson is in between the pipes the Ducks offense doesn't show up. They have scored two or fewer goals in each of his past four starts, and six of the past seven, averaging just 1.25 goals per game over his past four. The Jets were 2-0-1 in the three meetings last season against the Ducks, including a 3-0 loss in Anaheim on March 20 in a Hellebuyck vs. Gibson matchup.

Wednesday, Oct. 30

Tampa Bay at New Jersey:
The Lightning head to Prudential Center in Newark looking to take down the Devils. They have had plenty of success on the road, winning their past two in Montreal by a 3-1 score on Oct. 15, and 4-3 in a shootout at Boston on Oct. 17. In the past five on the road they're 3-1-1, with the lone loss an inexplicable 4-2 beating from the lowly Ottawa Senators. To be fair, backup G Curtis McElhinney made that start, and he lost the overtime start at Carolina on Oct. 6, too. Vezina Trophy winner Andrei Vasilevskiy, the projected starter for Wednesday's game, is 3-0-0 in his past three starts away from home.

Vancouver at Los Angeles:
The Canucks are coming off a 7-2 beating of the Florida Panthers, cooling off a previously red-hot team. Vancouver has rolled up 3.3 goals per game to rank ninth in the NHL, while checking in fourth with just 2.4 goals per game allowed. A good part of the early-season success of the Canucks has been their ability to kill penalties, ranking third at 88.9 percent. Calder Trophy winner Elias Pettersson is back at it again, leading the team with 14 points. The Kings are dead-last in goals against, allowing 4.0 per game. They're a dismal 28th on the power play at just 9.5 percent, while ranking 25th on the kill. That's not a good recipe for success.

Thursday, Oct. 31

Montreal at Vegas:
There are just two standalone games on Thursday, as everyone else is off for a little trick or treating. The Canadiens hope to give the Golden Knights a little bit of Halloween horror. These two franchises have met four times during the regular season since the inception of the Golden Knights, and three games have been decided by one goal -- all wins by Montreal. The Habs have averaged 3.75 goals per game in the four meetings, while the Golden Knights have averaged 3.75 goals per game, too. The past three meetings have each gone 'over', too.

Friday, Nov. 1

Philadelphia at New Jersey:
The Devils will host the Flyers, and New Jersey is looking for a little revenge after a 4-0 shellacking in the City of Brotherly Love back on Oct. 9. The Devils are still searching for either G Mac Blackwood or Cory Schneider to step up and be the No. 1 backstop. Lately, it appears Blackwood has taken the lead, as he has been sharp, including a 1-0 shutout win over the high-octane Vancouver Canucks on Oct. 19. The last time the Devils beat the Flyers was Jan. 12, and Blackwood was in between the pipes in that one against G Carter Hart. The 'under' has cashed in three of the past four meetings, including that win by the Devils, and the earlier meeting this season.

Dallas at Colorado:
The Stars and Avalanche lock horns, and this series has been dominated by Colorado lately. The Avalanche have won six of the past eight regular-season meetings, including three of four during the 2018-19 season. Colorado has won four of the past five at home against the Stars, too. The 'under' has connected in four of the past five meetings, too, although the 'over' is 6-3 in the past nine in Denver. As mentioned above, Dallas has struggled to score goals, while Colorado ranks just 21st with 2.6 goals per game entering play on Tuesday.

LEAFS NOT STRIKING FIRST

While we're on the topic of first goals, the Toronto Maple Leafs could use a lesson from their Tuesday night opponent in that regard as they host the Washington Capitals. The Leafs have been the worst team in the NHL when it comes to getting on the scoreboard first, having done so in just three of their first 13 games this season.

Strangely, however, that hasn't carried over into their first-period goal output, as they still rank third overall with 14 goals in the opening 20 minutes. Washington has scored the first goal on nine occasions this season, and has 11 first-period tallies.

WORTH A SHOT

Looking for a player prop? We'd like to draw your attention to Tuesday's encounter between the Tampa Bay Lightning and New York Rangers. Lightning center Steven Stamkos has made life miserable for the Rangers' back end in recent meetings, having racked up four goals and two assists in the last three encounters between the teams.

The Broadway Blueshirts come into this one in a defensive tailspin, having allowed the second-most goals per game in the NHL (3.78). Stamkos remains one of the most lethal scorers in the league, and is a good bet to pay off on a goal or point prop in this one.

A TALE OF TWO POWERPLAYS

A decided edge with the man advantage could make the Edmonton Oilers a savvy road play Wednesday night as they visit the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Oilers have fallen on hard times following a sizzling start to the season, but they still own the NHL's most potent power play at 33.3 percent and have converted 6-of-17 man-advantage chances on the road so far in 2019-20.

The Blue Jackets PP unit that always seems to get off to a slow start to the season. Columbus comes into the new week ranked 25th in power-play proficiency, converting just 11.4 percent of the time.

GOALIE PROFILE: PEKKA RINNE, NASHVILLE PREDATORS

It's always nice to see an elite goaltender age gracefully ? and that's exactly what's happening with Rinne, who looks like he hasn't lost a step even at age 36. Rinne enters the week with a sparkling 6-0-1 record to go along with a 1.98 goals-against average (tied for third among league netminders) and a .931 save percentage (tied for sixth).

His incredible start to the campaign has played a major part in the Predators (+1.57 units won) sitting second in the Central Division and riding a three-game winning streak going into Tuesday's home encounter with the Chicago Blackhawks.

INJURY UPDATE: F F VLADIMIR TARASENKO, ST. LOUIS BLUES

The Blues' chances of repeating as Stanley Cup champs have taken a significant hit with word that Tarasenko, their star winger, will miss at least the next five months with a shoulder injury. Tarasenko, who will undergo surgery Tuesday and suffered the injury in the first period of the Blues' Oct. 24 game against the Los Angeles Kings.

It's a major blow to the Blues' offensive attack, with Tarasenko having recorded three goals and seven assists through his first 10 games this season. Look to the Under as a strong play, with the Blues likely to focus more on defense until they address the offensive void.

HAT TRICK TRENDS

? The goals piled up over the previous seven days worth of NHL games, resulting in a sizeable edge for Over bettors. There were 27 Over results in the past week compared to just 20 Unders in that same span; extra-time games went 7-4 O/U. That makes the Over a slightly superior play for the season, with 90 occurrences compared with 75 Unders.

? Visiting teams aren't fans of Dean Morton early in the 2019-20 campaign. The veteran official has provided the most profit for home-team bettors, with the hosts boasting a +6.00-unit gain through his first 10 games. The home team has averaged 3.7 goals per game over that span, with the visitors coming in at 2.3 goals per contest.

? If you're betting on the Washington Capitals, you're much safer doing so when they're playing on the road ? at least, based on what we've seen from them so far. The Capitals enter the new week as the most profitable road team in the league at +4.14 units won ? and 25th-best at home (-1.76). Washington visits Toronto on Tuesday before returning home for a two-game set.

Crosby, Simon lead Penguins to big win over Flyers
October 29, 2019
By The Associated Press

PITTSBURGH (AP) Sidney Crosby and Dominik Simon scored during an early four-goal outburst, and the Pittsburgh Penguins drilled the Philadelphia Flyers 7-1 on Tuesday night.

Crosby, wearing a facemask as extra protection after getting hit in the head by a shot over the weekend, added two assists to boost his career point total against the Flyers to 102 as the Penguins rolled to a rare lopsided victory over their cross-state rivals.

Jared McCann, Justin Schultz, Zach Aston-Reese, Jake Guentzel and Dominik Kahun also scored for Pittsburgh. Matt Murray stopped 29 shots to win for the sixth time in his last seven starts.

Oskar Lindblom got his sixth goal for the Flyers, but Philadelphia was simply overwhelmed by the Penguins during a first-period onslaught in which Pittsburgh beat Brian Elliott four times in just more than six minutes.

CAPITALS 4, MAPLE LEAFS 3, OT

TORONTO (AP) - Alex Ovechkin scored his second goal of the game during an overtime power play to complete a four-point night, and Washington beat Toronto.

John Carlson also scored twice for Washington. Nicklas Backstrom added three assists, while Braden Holtby made 27 saves.

Auston Matthews had two goals and an assist and Andreas Johnsson scored the other goal from Toronto, which got 30 saves from Frederick Andersen.

The Capitals were on the man advantage for much of overtime before Ovechkin scored his 11th of the season on a bullet one-time at the 4-minute mark.

BRUINS 5, SHARKS 1

BOSTON (AP) - David Krejci returned with a goal and an assist after missing five games with an injury, David Pastrnak scored his league-leading 12th and Boston beat San Jose.

Chris Wagner also had a goal and an assist as the Bruins won their fourth straight and improved to 6-0-2 in their last eight. Charlie Coyle and Brandon Carlo also scored for Boston.

Tuukka Rask made 16 saves for the Bruins, who outshot the Sharks 41-17 and held San Jose to just six shots in each of the first two periods.

Brent Burns scored San Jose's only goal. Martin Jones finished with 36 saves for the Sharks, who lost their third straight and went 1-3-1 on a five-game Eastern Conference trip.

RANGERS 4, LIGHTNING 1

NEW YORK (AP) - Filip Chytil scored the tiebreaking goal in his season debut, and New York scored three times in 6+ minutes late in the third period to beat Tampa Bay.

Ryan Strome had a goal and an assist, and Kaapo Kakko and Adam Fox also scored for the Rangers, who had one win in their previous seven games. Alexandar Georgiev stopped 29 shots.

Nikita Kucherov had Tampa Bay's goal and Andrei Vasilevskiy finished with 38 saves.

HURRICANES 2, FLAMES 1

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Andrei Svechnikov scored twice in the final 10:47, including a spectacular lacrosse-style goal that tied it, and Carolina rallied to beat Calgary.

Svechnikov earned a spot in the highlight reels by bringing the puck behind the net, scooping it up on his stick blade, lifting it to chest-level and tucking it over goalie David Rittich's right shoulder.

He followed that with a power-play connection with 7:25 remaining to help the Hurricanes win their second straight and beat ex-coach Bill Peters for the first time in three tries.

Elias Lindholm scored against his former team for the second straight year and David Rittich made 26 saves for the Flames.

RED WINGS 3, OILERS 1

DETROIT (AP) - Dylan Larkin and Patrik Nemeth scored in the first period, and Detroit beat Edmonton to end an eight-game skid.

Jimmy Howard made 31 saves for the Red Wings, who won for the first time since Oct. 10 against Montreal.

Larkin converted on a power play 7:41 into the game, lifting the puck from the front of the crease. Nemeth, who signed as a free agent last summer, scored his first goal with the Red Wings less than a minute later.

Leon Draisaitl scored Edmonton's only goal in the third period. Filip Hronek added a late empty-netter.

PREDATORS 3, BLACKHAWKS 0

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Nick Bonino had a natural hat trick, Pekka Rinne made 20 saves for his second consecutive shutout and Nashville beat Chicago.

Rocco Grimaldi had the primary assist on all three goals for the first three-point game of his career. Craig Smith added two assists for the Predators, winners of four straight.

The struggling Blackhawks have lost five of six.

Bonino's hat trick was the third of his NHL career and first with the Predators.

After scoring once in each of the first two periods, Bonino buried the rebound of a shot from Grimaldi from just outside Robin Lehner's crease, prompting fans to shower the ice with hats at 3:40 of the third.

Lehner finished with 48 saves.

STARS 6, WILD 3

DALLAS (AP) - Alexander Radulov had a hat trick, scoring late in the second period and twice in the third, as Dallas rallied from a three-goal deficit to beat Minnesota.

Roope Hintz, Joe Pavelski and Tyler Seguin also scored for Dallas, which didn't get on the board until Radulov's goal with 48 seconds left in the second period.

Eric Staal, who celebrated his 35th birthday, had a power-play goal and an assist in the first period for Minnesota. Jason Zucker and Ryan Suter also scored for the Wild.

Anton Khudobin made 11 saves for the Stars after relieving Ben Bishop to begin the second period. Bishop stopped eight of 10 shots he faced.

DUCKS 7, JETS 4

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Cam Fowler set a franchise record for career goals by an Anaheim defenseman in a win over Winnipeg.

John Gibson made 36 saves and Josh Mahura tied an Anaheim rookie mark with three assists as the Ducks broke a four-game losing streak to the Jets.

Nikolaj Ehlers scored twice for the Jets, who have lost five of seven. Connor Hellebuyck was pulled midway through the second period after allowing five goals on 19 shots, and Laurent Brossoit made seven saves in relief.

Carter Rowney scored twice late in the third period for the Ducks, and Ryan Getzlaf, Adam Henrique, Troy Terry and Derek Grant also scored.

Bryan Little and Blake Wheeler got the Jets' other goals.

Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

Six interesting college football games this week:

? Oregon -5 at USC

? Kansas State -5.5 at Kansas

? SMU at Memphis -5.5

? Georgia -6.5 vs Florida

? TCU @ Oklahoma State -3

? Miami @ Florida State -3.5

**********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Wrapping up last Saturday?s college football

13) Kansas State 48, Oklahoma 41? Wildcats scored on eight consecutive possessions in this massive upset; K-State had perfect balance; 213 passing yards, 213 rushing yards, as they scrambled the national playoff picture.

I?m guessing Saturday night was a fun one in the Little Apple.

12) LSU 23, Auburn 20? I?ve mentioned this a couple times, but Joe Burrow used to be the #3 QB at Ohio State? imagine ac college team having that much talent in their QB room?

Several years ago, I read a book called Meat Market, about recruiting in bigtime college football; it revolves around Ed Orgeron when he was head coach at Ole Miss. After reading that book, I wouldn?t have hired Orgeron as anything other than a defensive line coach/recruiter, but have to give him credit, he somehow got the LSU job and is running with it, primarily by giving up control of the offense to a 20-something who came in from the NFL?s Saints.

11) Minnesota 52, Maryland 10? Golden Gophers are 8-0 for first time since 1941; they?ve got a two-game lead in the Big 14 West.

10) Penn State 28, Michigan State 7? Spartans covered only once in their last 12 home games. Penn State is 8-0; they visit 8-0 Minnesota next week.

9) Kansas 37, Texas Tech 34? Never saw this before; Tech blocked the go-ahead FG with 0:13 left, but a Tech player lateraled the ball to a teammate, it was fumbled, and Kansas recovered with 0:02 left, where they kicked the game-winning FG, as Les Miles won his first Big X game with the Jayhawks.

8) Toledo 37, Eastern Michigan 34 (OT)? Bad beat for EMU (+2.5) backers; Eagles came into the game on a 19-5-1 ATS run as an underdog, but lost by half a point here.

7) Upsets:
Kansas State (+23.5) 48, Oklahoma 41
Colorado State (+14) 41, Fesno State 31
Oklahoma State (+10.5) 34, Iowa State 27
Kentucky (+10) 29, Missouri 7
San Jose State (+9.5) 34, Army 29
Illinois (+9.5) 24, Purdue 6
Rutgers (+7.5) 44, Liberty 34

6) Charlotte 39, North Texas 38? 49ers scored on a 34-yard pass play with 0:18 left, rallying back from a 35-21 4th quarter deficit. Total yardage was 589-539, Charlotte.

5) USC 35, Colorado 31- Trojans, Stanford and Cal are three Pac-12 teams that?ve all started three different QB?s this year, and before Halloween. Trojans trailed this game 31-21 after three quarters but rallied to improve to 5-3, 4-1 in Pac-12 tilts.

4) Oregon 37, Washington State 35? Ducks kicked FG at the gun for the win, giving Wazzu its fourth loss in five games, despite scoring 34+ points in three of the four losses. Oregon blew a 31-20 foutth quarter lead before pulling the game out at the end.

3) Kind of a funny moment in the Washington State-Oregon telecast Saturday night; Wazzu had the ball on its own 5-yard line, 3rd-and-25, with 2:00 left in first half, up 10-9. Analyst Brian Griese was preaching a conservative (draw play, punt) approach, while the play-by-play guy said they should throw and try and move the chains.

They threw the ball alright, and threw a pick-6. You could almost hear Griese smirking.

2) Navy 41, Tulane 38? Middies blew a 31-14 halftime lead, then kicked a 48-yard FG at the gun to send everyone home happy. Navy ran the ball for 385 yards, which usually means a win.

1) Memphis 42, Tulsa 41? Golden Hurricane missed a 29-yard field goal at the gun; sometimes its better to be lucky than good. 7-1 Memphis plays unbeaten SMU this week.

Johnson sends Lightning past Devils 7-6
October 30, 2019
By The Associated Press

DENVER (AP) Jonathan Huberdeau scored 29 seconds into overtime after he tied the game late in regulation, and the Florida Panthers rallied from a two-goal deficit to beat the injury-riddled Colorado Avalanche 4-3 on Wednesday night.

Huberdeau sent a backhanded shot between the pads of Avalanche goaltender Philipp Grubauer for the win. He tied the game with 1:30 remaining.

Colton Sceviour and Aleksander Barkov also scored for the Panthers, who went 2-1-1 on a four-game trip. Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 27 shots, including a glove save at the end of the third period.

Matt Nieto and Joonas Donskoi scored first-period goals, and Nathan MacKinnon added another in the third to make it 3-1. The Avs were without two big offensive pieces in Mikko Rantanen and Gabriel Landeskog due to lower-body injuries.

LIGHTNING 7, DEVILS 6, OT

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Tyler Johnson scored 1:16 into overtime, and Tampa Bay avoided its first three-game losing streak since late March 2018.

Ondrej Palat scored twice for the banged-up Lightning, who surrendered a tying goal to Kyle Palmieri in the waning seconds. Alex Killorn, Brayden Point, Anthony Cirelli and Mathieu Joseph also scored, and Curtis McElhinney made 36 saves.

Palmieri scored three goals and Jesper Bratt had two for the Devils. Sami Vatanen scored early in the third period for a 5-3 lead and Cory Schneider had 16 saves.

Johnson's fourth of the season came from the inside of the right circle.

BLUES 2, WILD 1

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Jordan Binnington made 35 saves and Alex Pietrangelo snapped a tie in the third period, sending the Blues to the victory.

Sammy Blais also scored for St. Louis, which won for the fourth time in five games. It was the first game for the Stanley Cup champions since star forward Vladimir Tarasenko had reconstructive surgery on his left shoulder.

Binnington was busy all night, facing 12 shots in every period. He improved to 6-2-3 this season.

Mats Zuccarello scored for the Wild, who dropped to 1-8-0 on the road. Devan Dubnyk made 24 stops.

CANUCKS 5, KINGS 3

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Brock Boeser scored three times, and the Canucks improved to 8-1-1 in their past 10 games.

Elias Pettersson had a goal and three assists for Vancouver. Bo Horvat added a power-play goal, and Jacob Markstrom made 21 saves.

Anze Kopitar had two assists and passed 900 career points, but the Kings lost their fourth straight game. Jeff Carter scored twice and Jonathan Quick made 44 saves.

CANADIENS 4, COYOTES 1

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Carey Price stopped 33 shots for Montreal, and Brendan Gallagher and Shea Weber scored in the opening minute of the first two periods.

Montreal arrived in the desert early for an extra day of practice and acclimation after beating Toronto 5-2 on Saturday.

The Canadiens had an extra jump early, scoring on their first shift in each of the first two periods. Jonathan Drouin added his third goal in two games, Nick Cousins also scored and Price was superb as usual against Arizona, improving to 12-1 all-time.

Jakob Chychrun scored for the Coyotes and Antti Raanta made 32 saves, giving up one goal when his skate blade fell off.

OILERS 4, BLUE JACKETS 1

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Leon Draisaitl had two goals and an assist, powering Edmonton to the road win.

James Neal and Jujhar Khaira also scored for the Oilers, who had dropped two in a row. Mike Smith stopped 23 shots.

Draisaitl's second goal, his team-leading 12th of the season, chased Joonas Korpisalo, who had his second lackluster outing in a row. He allowed four goals on Edmonton's first 12 shots before he was replaced by Elvis Merlikins, who finished with 19 saves.

Zach Werenski scored for the Blue Jackets in their second consecutive loss.

Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

Six more interesting college football games this week:

? Florida Atlantic @ Western Kentucky -2.5

? Mississippi State -7.5 @ Arkansas

? Army @ Air Force -14.5

? UAB @ Tennessee -11

? TCU @ Oklahoma State -3

? Oregon State @ Arizona -5

**********

Armadillo: Thursday's Den: Doing some thinking out loud??

13) Cincinnati Bengals have a bye this week; they announced they will start rookie QB Ryan Finley when they host the Ravens next week.

Sunday, Andy Dalton became the first NFL QB ever to start a season 8-0, and also 0-8. Tuesday, he got benched on his 32nd birthday.

While I?m here, a reminder that Marvin Lewis went 131-122-3 coaching the Bengals in the regular season; his 0-7 playoff record sent him packing.

Here is the problem: Cincinnati?s last .500 season without Lewis as HC was in 1996; their last playoff game without Lewis was in 1990.

Since 1991, Bengals are 55-145 in games not coached by Lewis, 131-122-3 wth Lewis.

12) Washington 6, Houston 2:
? First best-of-7 finals series in MLB, NHL or NBA where road team won all seven games.
? Washington played five elimination games this month; in his at-bats from 7th inning on in those five games, Anthony Rendon was 6-8 with three doubles, three homers and a walk.

11) Rockets 159, Wizards 158? While the Houston-Washington baseball teams were playing in the World Series, those cities? basketball teams set defense back 30 years.

It was the highest scoring NBA game that didn?t go to overtime since a 1990 game where Golden State beat Denver 162-158.

10) James Harden tied an NBA record Monday with his 7th career game with 20+ made foul shots; he shares the record with Moses Malone, Kobe Bryant.

Harden was 21-22 from the line vs Oklahoma City, whose whole team was 17-24.

9) When teams underperform, there have to be scapegoats:
? Bronx baseball team fired pitching coach Larry Rothschild; it is obviously his fault that the Astros are better than the Bronx Bombers.
? Arizona Wildcats fired defensive coordinator Marcel Yates and linebackers coach John Rushing, after the Wildcats gave up 133 points in their last three games.

8) Weird fact: When the Giants acquired DT Leonard Williams from the Jets a few days ago it was the first time EVER the Giants/Jets made a trade. Thats over 50 years.

7) Patriots, Falcons cut their kickers Tuesday; New England signed Nick Folk, who will kick for his 4th NFL team- he also holds the record for longest field goal (55 yards) in AAF history this past winter. Falcons are on a bye, haven?t signed a new kicker yet.

6) It bothers me that FOX has to interview managers while a World Series game is going on; they?re not going to say anything interesting, so you get to see a guy squirm for a few minutes while he?s stressing out about not doing his freaking job. It makes no sense.

5) Stephen Strasburg is the first MLB pitcher ever who was the #1 pick in the amateur draft, then started a World Series game for the same team that drafted him.

4) RIP to coach Al Bianchi, who passed away this week at age 87; Bianchi was a head coach in the ABA and NBA for nine seasons- his 1970-71 Virginia Squires went 55-29. He was also the first coach of the Seattle SuperSonics.

3) With Klay Thompson sitting out most of this year, this year?s Golden State Warriors have the 3rd-youngest roster in the NBA.

2) With Joe Flacco headed to the IR, Denver Broncos have three QB?s (Allen, Rypien, Lock) none of whom has never taken an NFL snap.

1) Last Sunday was only day this year where there were NFL, NBA, NHL and major league baseball games, all on the same day.
