Tkachuk sends Flames past Preds in OT

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) Matthew Tkachuk didn't think a comeback win was possible after Calgary's terrible start.

Then, he scored a pair of improbable goals for a come-from-behind win.

Tkachuk scored the tying goal with 40 seconds left in regulation and the winning goal with 1.4 seconds left in overtime on a between-the-legs shot as the Flames' beat the Nashville Predators 6-5 on Thursday night.

Calgary rallied from a three-goal deficit after Nashville took the game's first 14 shots.

''I didn't think it was going to be possible after the first 20 minutes or first 10 minutes,'' Tkachuk said. ''We were all over them in that third period and that's the way we need to be to be at our best.''

On the winner, Tkachuk skated in front of the net against two Nashville defenders, let the puck slip between his legs and flipped a shot that beat Predators goalie Pekka Rinne high to the stick side.

Derek Ryan, Rasmus Andersson, Elias Lindholm and Alan Quine also scored for the Flames.

Austin Watson scored twice, Calle Jarnrkok scored two short-handed goals and Nick Bonino had a goal as the Predators saw their four-game win streak halted.

''I think this comeback kind of gives us confidence that we can be down in the third, even though we don't want to be, and we can come back,'' Tkachuk said. ''So I guess that's the positive we can take.''

Tkachuk's rebound goal with 40 seconds left tied the game at 5 and forced overtime.

Calgary's David Rittich made 31 saves. Rinne made 21 saves.

Quine's first goal tied it at 4 with 3:21 left. Watson gave Nashville a 5-4 lead with 1:22 remaining.

Lindholm scored his team-leading ninth goal from close range, narrowing the gap to 4-3 of the third period.

''A lot of good things in the third period and it looks a lot more like us, right,'' Flames coach Bill Peters said. ''We put the work boots on and played with some speed and possessed the puck. It should be a springboard to bigger and better things.''

Calgary didn't take its first shot until about six minutes remained in the first period.

Bonino gave the Predators a 1-0 lead when he scored on a backhanded rebound at 5:33 of the first period.

It was his fourth straight goal, including a hat trick in Nashville's 3-0 win over Chicago on Tuesday. The center leads the Predators with seven goals.

Watson scored on assists from Colton Sissons and Matt Irwin, increasing Nashville's lead to 2-0 at 10:15 of the first.

Watson signed a three-year, $4.5 million contract extension earlier in the day.

Ryan scored on the Flames' second shot, a wrist shot from the bottom of the left faceoff circle, narrowing the gap to 2-1 at 15:27 of the first.

Calgary almost tied it when Johnny Gaudreau's wrist shot bounced off the right post before Rinne smothered the rebound in the crease 18 minutes into the first.

The Flames missed another chance to tie when a shot hit the post again early in the second period.

Jarnkrok scored his first short-handed goal on a 2-on-1 breakaway after a Calgary turnover, sending a wrist shot into high near post past Rittich, boosting Nashville's lead to 3-1 at 4:36 of the second period.

Jarnkrok scored his second short-handed goal on another 2-on1 after a Flames turnover, firing a wrist shot from the bottom of the left faceoff circle past Rittich for a 4-1 lead at 18:52 on the second.

Anderson narrowed the deficit to 4-2 in the third.

Domi goal in OT caps Canadiens comeback in win against Golden Knights

Scores at 26 seconds after Gallagher ties it late in third period for Montreal

LAS VEGAS -- Max Domi scored 26 seconds into overtime, and the Montreal Canadiens rallied to defeat the Vegas Golden Knights 5-4 at T-Mobile Arena on Thursday.

Montreal trailed 4-2 after Mark Stone scored at 7:59 of the third period. Tomas Tatar cut it to 4-3 at 13:33, and Brendan Gallagher scored for the second consecutive game at 18:02 to tie it 4-4.

Phillip Danault and Jonathan Drouin scored for the Canadiens (7-4-2), who are on a three-game winning streak. Keith Kinkaid made 31 saves.

William Karlsson scored for the third consecutive game, and Alex Tuch scored in his season debut for the Golden Knights (8-5-1). Marc-Andre Fleury made 25 saves.

Danault scored off a rebound from Shea Weber's shot at 2:35 of the first period to give the Canadiens a 1-0 lead.

Karlsson tied it 1-1 at 14:35 before Tuch scored on a breakaway at 19:36 to give the Golden Knights a 2-1 lead.

Drouin tied it 2-2 at 9:40 of the second period.

Cody Glass gave Vegas a 3-2 lead at 4:21 of the third period.

READY TO START

Don't be surprised to see the Colorado Avalanche enjoying a first intermission lead as they look to continue their hot start to the season Friday night against visiting Dallas. The Avalanche have excelled in a variety of ways en route to the best record in the Western Conference, including an impressive first-period showing: Colorado ranks second in the league in scoring over the opening 20 minutes (17) while boasting a +3 goal differential for the period.

Dallas, on the other hand, has scored just nine times in the opening frame with a -1 differential. We like Colorado on the first-period moneyline.

DON'T BE FOOLED

You might see two high-powered teams in the Edmonton Oilers and Pittsburgh Penguins facing off Saturday afternoon and immediately mash the Over. But don't be so hasty: these teams have actually been a superior Under play in recent meetings, having combined for five or fewer goals in four of six encounters in which Oilers mega-star Connor McDavid has played.

But if you're not convinced, you could certainly opt for some player point props instead; McDavid has 10 points in six meetings with the Penguins, while Pittsburgh superstar Sidney Crosby has points in three straight games vs. the Oilers.

THE CURE FOR WHAT AILS THEM?

The Chicago Blackhawks have had all sorts of problems generating offense this season, particularly on the road. But a trip to Staples Center could be the remedy for their offensive maladies as they tangle with the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday Night. The Blackhawks have scored just three goals in their first three games away from Chicago; only the New Jersey Devils have been less proficient on the road.

The Kings have accommodated many a visitor in the early part of the season, boasting a hideous 3.33 home goals-against average that ranks eighth-worst in the league as of Friday. We see Chicago breaking out here.

HOME-ICE DISADVANTAGE

The road team has been strangely dominant in the recent head-to-head series between the Calgary Flames and Washington Capitals, which resumes Sunday Night at Capital One Arena. The road team has prevailed in eight of the previous 11 meetings, though the Capitals swept their two-game series last season and have won three of the past four encounters overall.

That said, Calgary was one of the top road teams in the NHL last season, with its 24 away victories ranking second-best in the league. And as good as Washington has been this year, it enters Friday with a minus-1 goal margin in five home games.

GOALIE PROFILE: MATT MURRAY, PITTSBURGH PENGUINS

Oddsmakers seem to have high expectations of the Penguins on a yearly basis, which means less profit opportunity for Pittsburgh bettors. But Murray has helped keep the Penguins in the black in the early going, with Pittsburgh entering Friday at +1.57 units won for the season.

Murray is off to a sensational start; his seven wins rank second (behind only former teammate Marc-Andre Fleury) while he sits sixth in goals-against average (2.20) and ninth in save percentage (.923). His netminding prowess is a major reason why Pittsburgh is 5-8 O/U despite owning one of the top scoring averages in the NHL.

INJURY UPDATE, F PATRIK LAINE, WINNIPEG JETS

The Jets have a litany of injury concerns at the moment ? and while Patrik Laine's certainly isn't the most serious, it could very well have the biggest short-term impact as Winnipeg visits San Jose on Friday night. Laine is day-to-day with what the team is calling a "minor" lower-body injury, but he won't be in action against the Sharks.

Laine has been one of the offensive lynch pins for the Jets this season, sharing the team lead with 13 points (three goals, 10 assists) in 12 games. What was already going to be a difficult task becomes even tougher for the Jets, which is why we like the home team on the -1.5 puck line.

HAT TRICK TRENDS

? Scores are starting to creep up, as evidenced by last week's eye-opening totals trends. There were 24 Overs in the previous seven-day period, compared to only 15 Unders in that same span; extra-time games played a big part, going 7-3 O/U. That puts the Over tally at 100 for the season, with the Under at 87 ? so don't be surprised to see a few more 6.5s moving forward.

? Peter MacDougall has finally been unseated as the Over King of the Referees. Eric Furlatt has taken the lead in total Over value produced in his games, with 6.48 units won thanks to an incredible 8-1 O/U mark so far; teams are averaging 7.2 goals per game in his assignments. MacDougall (9-3 O/U, +5.70 units, 6.92 gpg) is a close second.

? Two teams stand out above the rest from a totals perspective entering Friday's slate of games. The Capitals have been the strongest Over play in the league with 10 games that have surpassed the total, while the Stars are the only team in the league with double-digit Under results (10) at this point in the season.

Islanders win 8th straight, beating Lightning 5-2

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) Anders Lee had a goal and two assists in New York's three-goal third period and the Islanders beat the Tampa Lightning 5-2 Friday night for their eighth straight victory.

Mathew Barzal and Ryan Pulock scored in the second period, Josh Bailey and Derick Brassard had goals in the third, and Thomas Greiss stopped 33 shots for New York's longest winning streak since a nine-game run in the 1989-90 season. The Islanders have not lost since opening the season 1-3-0.

Yanni Gourde and Ryan McDonagh scored for Tampa Bay, which lost two of three to New York area teams this week. The Lightning lost 4-1 at the New York Rangers on Tuesday before beating New Jersey 7-6 in overtime Wednesday.

CAPITALS 6, SABRES 1

WASHINGTON (AP) - Jakub Vrana scored twice, Tom Wilson had a goal and two assists and Washington beat Buffalo in a matchup of division leaders.

Brendan Leipsic added his first goal for his new team and assisted on Chandler Stephenson's goal as Washington scored four times in the first 11 minutes of the first period. T.J. Oshie also scored, and Braden Holtby made 29 saves. Henri Jokiharju scored his first NHL goal for the Sabres.

BLUES 4, BLUE JACKETS 3, OT

ST. LOUIS (AP) - David Perron scored eight seconds into overtime to lift St. Louis past Columbus.

After the Blues overcame a two-goal deficit to force overtime, Perron scored off a pass from Alex Pietrangelo at the moment St. Louis' power play from Sonny Milano's hooking penalty expired.

Brayden Schenn, Oskar Sundqvist and Robert Thomas also scored and Jordan Binnington made 27 saves to improve to 7-2-3. The defending champion Blues have won three straight games and five of six.

Pierre-Luc Dubois, Milano and Oliver Bjorkstrand scored for Columbus.

STARS 2, AVALANCHE 1

DENVER (AP) - Roope Hintz scored twice, including a short-handed goal in the second period, and Anton Khudobin made 38 saves in Dallas' victory over Colorado.

The Stars are 5-1 since opening 1-7-1.

Nathan MacKinnon scored for Colorado, and Philipp Grubauer made 27 saves.

HURRICANES 7, RED WINGS 3

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Sebastian Aho had two goals and an assist to lead Carolina past Detroit.

Andrei Svechnikov, Nino Neiderreiter, Martin Necas, Brock McGinn and Teuvo Teravainen also scored to help the Hurricanes win their third straight, all at home. Petr Mrazek stopped 29 shots.

Anthony Mantha scored twice and Tyler Bertuzzi also had a goal for the Red Wings. They have lost nine of 10 overall and five straight on the road.

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Sean Couturier scored in regulation and had the only goal in the shootout to lift Philadelphia past New Jersey.
