83-year old John Robinson, the highly successful USC/Rams? coach, is a consultant with the LSU program; he knows Ed Orgeron from when Orgeron worked at USC- Robinson?s wife is from New Orleans. Was good to see coach Robinson smiling; was lucky enough to meet him for a few minutes at Rams? training camp in 1986? good guy.

12) Alabama QB Tagovailoa was 21-40/418 with four passing TD?s despite his mobility being hampered by an injured leg.

Can a one-loss Alabama team that won?t be in the SEC title game make the 4-team national playoff? Gonna be lot of arguing about that one.

11) Oklahoma 42, Iowa State 41? Sooners led 35-14 at halftime, but Cyclones stormed back, scored a TD with 0:24 left and went for 2 points and the lead instead of kicking a tying PAT, which re-ignites a pet peeve of mine.

10) Baylor 29, TCU 23 OT? There were no touchdowns scored in regulation time; Horned Frogs led 9-0 at halftime, but Baylor kicked a 51-yard FG with 0:36 left, then won the game in the third OT.

Fun game to watch; tough game to lose. Baylor is 9-0; four of the Bears? six Big X wins were by 3 or fewer points, or in OT. TCU is 0-4 in games decided by 7 or fewer points.

9) Minnesota 31, Penn State 26? Minnesota is 9-0 for the first time since 1904; they averaged 16.95 yards every time they threw the ball in this game. USC and Florida State jobs are open, and coach PJ Fleck signed a long-term contract extension with the Golden Gophers? Why?

Fleck and his wife have four kids; do these kids not like warm weather? None of my business, but walking on the beach seems like a hell of a lot more fun than making snowmen, and it is a lot easier to recruit ballplayers in Florida/California than it is in Minnesota.

8) Western Kentucky 45, Arkansas 19? WKU?s QB Ty Storey started nine games for Arkansas LY, then transferred to WKU because he didn?t think he would start for the Razorbacks this year. Storey, a 6-2 senior from Charleston, Arkansas, was 22-32/219 passing, as the Hilltoppers improved to 6-4.

Devils strike fast, hold off Canucks 2-1

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) Wayne Simmonds and Jesper Bratt scored 22 seconds apart in the first period and Mackenzie Blackwood made 30 saves in the New Jersey Devils' 2-1 victory over the Vancouver Canucks on Sunday.

Brock Boeser had a power-play goal for Vancouver. The Canucks are 0-3-1 in their last four games.

Simmonds opened the scoring on a power play with 8:12 left in the first period. Taylor Hall sent a pass into the Canucks' zone that Kyle Palmieri directed to Simmonds. He put it past goalie Jacob Markstrom for the Devils' second road power-play goal of the season.

Bratt quickly made it 2-0 at 12:10 when he deflected Damon Severson's point shot.

Boeser scored with 7:20 left in the second. He took J.T. Miller's pass, used his speed to skate into the Devil's zone, then beat Blackwood with a low shot to the far corner.

It was the second head-to-head brother clash between Vancouver's Quinn Hughes, the 20-year-old defenseman picked seventh overall in the 2018 draft, and Jack Hughes, the 18-year-old center picked No. 1 by the Devils this year. Quinn Hughes assisted on Boeser's goal.

DETROIT (AP) - Anthony Mantha scored with 30.9 seconds left to give Detroit the comeback victory over Vegas.

Mantha broke in alone off the right wing after taking a pass off the boards from Robby Fabbri, then beat goalie Malcolm Subban with a wrist shot from the right circle. Mantha has 11 goals this season.

Andreas Athanasiou and defenseman Madison Bowey also scored and Jonathan Bernier made 17 saves to help the Red Wings win their second straight games.

Jonathan Marchessault and Max Pacioretty scored for Vegas and Subban stopped 16 shots. The Golden Knights are 1-2-3 in their last six.

PANTHERS 6, RANGERS 5, SO

NEW YORK (AP) - Vincent Trocheck scored the shootout winner for Florida against New York.

Frank Vatrano scored in regulation and converted in the shootout for the Panthers. Evgenii Dadonov had a goal and two assists, Aleksander Barkov had a goal and a helper and Dominic Toninato and Brian Boyle also scored. Sam Montembeault made 34 saves.

Kaapo Kakko scored the lone shootout goal and had a power-play goal for New York. Ryan Lindgren, Filip Chytil, Brady Skjei and Chris Kreider also scored for the Rangers.

JETS 3, STARS 2, OT

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) - Mark Scheifele scored 21 seconds into overtime to lift Winnipeg past Dalla.

Scheifele went in on a 2-on-1 with Kyle Connor, kept the puck and beat Anton Khudobin with a low shot for his seventh goal.

Patrik Laine snapped a 10-game scoring drought with a power-play goal and Andrew Copp also scored for the Jets. Connor Hellebuyck made 26 saves to help Winnipeg improve to 4-0-1 in its last five.

Mattias Janmark and Radek Faksa scored for Dallas in the opener of a four-game trip. The Stars had won four in a row.

BLACKHAWKS 5, MAPLE LEAFS 4

CHICAGO (AP) - Patrick Kane had two goals and an assist, Robin Lehner made 53 saves and Chicago struck early and then held off Toronto.

Jonathan Toews, rookie Kirby Dach and Brandon Saad also scored for the Blackhawks. Alex DeBrincat had three assists and Dylan Strome added two.

William Nylander scored twice for the Maple Leafs, and John Tavares and Andreas Johnsson added power-play goals in the third as Toronto stormed back with 26 shots in the final period. Auston Matthews had four assists for Toronto, which was 3-0-2 in its last five and lost in regulation for the first time in two weeks.

Toronto backup Michael Hutchinson stopped 29 shots and remained winless at 0-4-1.

FLYERS 3, BRUINS 2, SO

BOSTON (AP) - Joel Farabee scored in the shootout to lead Philadelphia to its fourth straight win.

Travis Konecny had a goal and an assist, and Phillipe Myers also scored in regulation for the Flyers. Carter Hart finished with 26 saves.

Danton Heinen and Brad Marchand each had a goal and Jaroslav Halak stopped 27 shots for the Bruins, who lost their third straight (0-2-1) after six-game win streak.

Farabee, who played at nearby Boston University, beat Halak high glove-side on the Flyers' first shootout attempt. Hart stopped all three tries by the Bruins, poke-checking away David Pastrnak's attempt to seal Philadelphia's win.

OILERS 6, DUCKS 2

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Connor McDavid had a hat trick and became the eighth NHL player to record 400 points before his 23rd birthday as Edmonton beat Anaheim.

It is the fifth hat trick of McDavid's career and his first since Feb. 18, 2018, against Colorado. Edmonton's superstar center is the 13th player in league history to reach 400 points in 306 or fewer games.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins also scored twice for the Oilers, who have won four of their last six. Zack Kassian had a goal and two assists and Leon Draisaitl added three assists to move into the NHL scoring lead with 33 points (14 goals, 19 assists).

Oscar Klefbom had a pair of assists and Mikko Koskinen made 31 saves for his seventh win in 10 games.

Rickard Rakell and Max Jones scored for Anaheim and John Gibson stopped 25 shots.

Capitals cashing in on Overs, and the NHL best bets you need to make this week

We're now more than a month into the NHL season and some strong trends are starting to form, including the Washington Capitals emerging as the best Over bet in the league. We ride that bet and bring you some of our other favorite wagers and predictions as we break down the hockey odds in our early week NHL betting primer.

SENS CLIMBING CELLAR

The Ottawa Senators (3-2 SU, 2-3 O/U last five) are making a move to escape the Eastern Conference basement. The Sens had a difficult schedule that saw them play five games in eight days but managed to grab three wins, covering the -1.5 twice. To add, Ottawa hasn?t lost in back-to-back games since October 21, a span of eight games.

The Sens will travel to Carolina to take on the struggling Hurricanes on Monday. Carolina has dropped four straight games, being outscored 15 to 7 which includes a 4-1 loss to Ottawa last Saturday. Petr Mrazek should get the start in goal for the Hurricanes. The goalie has allowed three goals or more in 5 of his last seven starts. Grab the Sen?s plus-money ML +200.

CAPS ARE OVER THE TOP

The Washington Capitals have been an over-machine in the early part of the 2019-20 season. Heading into the start of this week, the Capitals are 13-3-1 O/U which is by far the best mark in the league. Washington plays Monday (Arizona), Wednesday (Flyers), Friday (Canadiens) and Saturday (Bruins).

With the heavy schedule, the Caps will likely split starts between Braden Holtby and Ilya Samsonov. Holtby has allowed less than three goals in a game just twice over his last seven while his last Under was back on October 5. Samsonov?s last four games have seen totals of six, 11, seven and nine goals.

We are riding the Over for each of Washington?s four games this week.

NO PLACE LIKE SIN CITY

The Vegas Knights (2-3 SU, 2-3 O/U last five) wrapped up a four-game, six-night road trip on Sunday and will finally get back to T-Mobile Arena Wednesday night when they?ll take on the Chicago Blackhawks (3-2 SU, 2-3 O/U). The Knights haven?t been playing their best hockey lately but a trip home to face the West?s worst road team in the Blackhawks should help right the ship.

The Blackhawks have yet to win in regulation on the road this year and have just one win in seven games. A lot of their struggles can be blamed on their scoring woes. They are potting just 2.50 goals per game which is the fourth-worst mark in the league. That number gets even worse on the road as Chicago is burying just 1.86 goals a game as the visitor.

Take the Golden Knights in regulation (3-way).

WINGS WANDER OUT WEST

Robby Fabbri has found a new home in Detroit as the Red Wings (2-3 SU, 1-5 O/U last five) traded for the forward last week. The move showed immediate returns as he sniped two power play goals in his first game ? a 4-2 win over the Bruins. However, the excitement may not last long as the Wings take their seven-game road losing streak to Anaheim on Tuesday.

The Ducks have held their opponents to an average of 1.83 goals in their six wins at home this year. That's bad news for Detroit as they are averaging 1.29 goals per game over their ugly road losing streak. With the Red Wings having scored two or fewer goals in 10 of their last 15 games, take their team total Under 2.5.

GOALIE PROFILE: FREDERIK ANDERSEN, TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS

Freddy Andersen has put his early-season struggles behind him. Last week the netminder picked up five of a possible six points in three games while stopping 91 of 95 shots. He has a 2.22 goals against average and a .929 save percentage over the last four weeks.

The Leafs are on the road for seven of their next eight with their next stop in New York to face the Islanders on Wednesday. The Islanders have won 11 of their last 12 but have been doing it with the defense more than their offense. New York is scoring 3.0 goals per game, while allowing 1.3 goals against over their last five.

With Freddy having a decent 2.69 GAA after three or more days of rest, this will be a great spot for the Under 6 for the Wednesday night matchup. Nassau will be rocking as the home crowd is still bitter at John Tavares ? who will stroll into his former place of employment wearing the ?C? for the Leafs.

INJURY UPDATE: F MITCH MARNER, TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS

Mitch Marner left Saturday?s game with a lower-body injury and didn?t return. He also didn?t travel with the team to Chicago for Sunday?s 5-4 loss. The talented winger will now be out up to four weeks as the team reported on Sunday night.

This may have the biggest effect on Toronto?s power play where Marner was responsible for a lot of zone entries. The Leafs were an anemic 3-for-34 over their last 10 games heading into Sunday?s game with the man advantage. Losing Mitch will almost certainly hurt those already depressing numbers. Facing the Islanders? seventh-best penalty kill on Wednesday also won?t help the matter.

We liked the Under 6 as mentioned above and we will also double down on the Leafs team total Under 3.5.

HAT TRICK TRENDS

? The New Jersey Devils are 7-1 O/U at home this year and will face the Ottawa Senators (3-3 O/U away) Wednesday night. The Vegas Knights are also 7-1 O/U at home and will face a Blackhawks team Wednesday that is coming off a nine-goal game on Sunday.

If you?re an Under person, the best matchup early in the week looks like the Edmonton Oilers at the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday night. The Sharks are 4-5-1 O/U at home this year while the Oilers are one of the more frequent Under road teams as they are 3-7 O/U on the road this year.

? Last weekend, we hit our +345 three-team 1P Over parlay by following some basic first-period trends. Here is another go for Tuesday night?s slate: The Boston Bruins and Florida Panthers are a combined 14-6 O/U on first-period totals in their last 10. The Columbus Blue Jackets at the Montreal Canadiens (15-5 O/U 1P last 10), and the Arizona Coyotes at the St. Louis Blues (15-5 O/U 1P last 10) round out this three-teamer.

? Over the last four weeks, home teams are winning at 53 percent on Mondays, 61 percent on Tuesdays and 62.5 percent on Wednesdays. The Under has been hitting with more frequency over the last month as well, especially early in the week. The Under is hitting at 53 percent on Mondays, 70 percent on Tuesdays and 44 percent on Wednesdays over the last four weeks.
