Random thoughts on a December day when I?m hunkered down inside because it is damn cold outside, and I?m already tired of winter:

Oklahoma 30, Baylor 23 OT? NFL teams are very high on Baylor coach Matt Rhule as someone who will be an NFL head coach someday. His QB got knocked out of this game in the 2nd quarter, but they still took Oklahoma to OT, behind freshman 3rd-stringer Jacob Zeno, who completed only two passes, but for 159 yards.

11am local time kickoff means a 7am pre-game meal. Not an ideal situation, though, such an early kickoff. TV decides which games are played when.

This was Baylor?s first appearance in the Big X title game; they were outgained 146-16 in the first quarter, 433-265 for the game.

Baylor 63, Arizona 58? Feel bad for the Baylor basketball players, with this game at same time as the football game, which was played 98 miles away in Arlington. They actually let fans into the basketball game in Waco for free, and not that many showed up.

? Cheerleading trivia: Half of Baylor?s cheerleaders went to the football game, half stayed behind in Waco and went to the basketball game. The cheerleaders who stayed behind get to go to Baylor?s bowl game, which seems like it would be more fun than a 98-mile bus ride to Dallas.

Appalachian State 45, Louisiana 38? This game was 42-17 with 2:00 left in third quarter; Ragin? Cajuns closed to within final margin with 1:19 left to play. ULL gained 513 yards, but their minus-2 turnover ratio did them in. App State?s last TD was a pick-6.

Miami OH 26, Central Michigan 21? RedHawks won their 16th MAC title, after gaining only 61 yards in the first half. CMU did great just getting to this game, after going 1-11 LY.

Ohio State 106, Penn State 74? If the NCAA tournament started tomorrow (it doesn?t), I?d pick a Louisville-Ohio State national title game.

LSU 37, Georgia 10? Joe Burrow is going to win the Heisman Trophy; at one time, he was the 3rd-string QB at Ohio State. Three of the four QB?s in the national playoff are going to be guys who transferred from their original school.

Memphis 29, Cincinnati 24?- Not often teams play each other two weeks in a row; Tigers beat Cincinnati twice in eight days- thats the good news.

Bad news for Memphis? their coach is expected to bolt to Florida $tate today.

Boise State 31, Hawai?i 10? If you went to college at Hawai?i, how excited would you be about visiting Boise in December? Broncos win their third Muntain West title game.

Wisconsin 84, Indiana 64? Hoosiers were last D-I team in America to play outside their home arena, and it showed here- they got waxed. This was Indiana?s 17th loss in a row in Madison.

Creighton 95, Nebraska 76? Bluejays led this game 37-7; Nebraska has ton of work to do on the recruiting trail.

Memphis 65, UAB 57? Blazers were up 20 in first half, but Memphis is so talented; they won this going away. When Tigers get Wiseman back in January, they have shot at developing into a Final Four contender. Big afternoon for the Memphis athletic department.

Xavier 73, Cincinnati 66? One of best rivalries in the country, been dominated by the home team recently. Naji Marshall scored 31 for the Musketeers.

Scheifele leads Jets to 3-2 win over Ducks

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) Mark Scheifele scored twice, the second on a power play with 4:22 left for his 400th NHL point, in the Winnipeg Jets' 3-2 victory over the Anaheim Ducks on Sunday.

Scheifele beat goalie John Gibson over the glove for his 13th of the season.

Adam Lowry also scored, Mathieu Perrault had two assists and Connor Hellebuyck made 31 saves. Winnipeg is 5-1-1 in its past seven games.

Jakob Silfverberg scored his team-leading 11th goal for the Ducks. Devin Shore had his first of the season and John Gibson made 30 saves. Anaheim is 1-3-1 in its lat five games.

PANTHERS 5, SHARKS 1

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) - Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 30 shots to win for the second straight night as Florida beat San Jose.

Aleksander Barkov, Keith Yandle and Frank Vatrano each had a goal and an assist, and Mike Matheson and Brett Connolly also scored to help Florida win for the third time in four games. Aaron Ekblad and Jonathan Huberdeau each had two assists.

Bobrovsky, coming off a 33-save performance in win over Columbus - his former team - on Saturday night, improved to 11-6-4.

Kevin Labanc scored and Martin Jones had 28 saves for the Sharks, who lost their fourth straight (0-3-1).

FLAMES WON?T MELT THIS AVALANCHE

On Monday,the second-place team in the Western Conference, the Colorado Avalanche, will host the Calgary Flames who will be on the front-end of a back-to-back road trip. The Avs offense is at full strength with its top-line finally back together after nearly a monthapart due to injuries.

The reunion is bad news for the league as Colorado has ripped off six straight wins and have outscored its opponents 26-10 since November 27.

Calgary has been playing good hockey of late, having won its last four, but those wins came against the Sabres (2), Kings and Senators while the Flames are scoring just 2.1 goals over thei last 10.

Avs? starting goalie Philipp Grubauer is questionable after leaving Saturday?s game, but backup Pavel Francouz is no slouch and has won his last three games, holding opponents to just four goals on 92 shots.

Colorado is 7-1 ATS at home in its last eight wins this year. We are stacking this game and playing the Avalanche 3-way ML (-105) as well as the -1.5 for +170.


WILD FOR THE OVER

Since starting goalie Devan Dubnyk went down with an injury on November 17, the Minnesota Wild have allowed the third-most goals in the league. Minny is 3-0-2 O/U in its last five thanks to scoring three or more goals in each of its home games where they average 3.8 goals a game.

The Anaheim Ducks will travel to Minnesota on Tuesday for the second game of a two-game road trip before heading back to California. The Ducks have been playing some loose hockey on the road this year as they are 6-2 O/U in their last eight road games as their penalty kill is getting scored on nearly 40 percent of the time since mid-November ? the worst-mark in the league.

We expect the Wild to start backup Kappo Kahkonen who is only 23 and has played just two games in the league. The rookie is due for a poor performance after two solid starts to begin his career and teams having more tape on him. Take the Over 6 and we will pound it if it opens at 5.5.


DETROIT SAD WINGS

The Winnipeg Jets will welcome the Detroit Red Wings to the Bell MTS Place (terrible name) with open arms on Tuesday as the Wings are riding a laughable 11-game losing streak. Over this shameful streak that began on November 14, Detroit?s opponents are scoring an average of 4.4 goals a game and have scored four or more in nine of the 11 games.

Things won?t get better for Detroit as they could be without their leading scorer in Tyler Bertuzzi who is playing close to 20 minutes a game but left Saturday?s game with an injury.

We are taking the Jets -1.5 as Detroit is 0-7 ATS in its last seven.


POOR PLAY POWERS OVER

On Wednesday, we turn our attention to two Eastern Conference teams who sit 13th and 14th in points over their last 10 games. The Montreal Canadiens have recently brought up rookie goalie Cayden Primeau after waiving backup Keith Kinklaid.

The move is an effort to spark something from the club as the Canadiens sit on the outskirts of a playoff spot and are tied for the league lead in goals allowed over their last 10. Although the Habs are just 1-4 O/U in their last five games as of Monday, they are 4-1-1 O/U in their previous six contests at home.

The Ottawa Senators have rewarded Over backers when they travel as the 14th-place Sens are 4-1 O/U in their last five road contests. This will also be their seventh road game in an eight-game stretch.

Making matters worse for Ottawa is the fact that its starting goalie Craig Andersen, who just returned from injury, was lifted from Saturday?s game against Philadelphia with another injury and his status is up in the air. We are banging the Over 6.5 on this Canadian hump day contest.


GOALIE PROFILE: TRISTAN JARRY, PITTSBURGH PENGUINS

Tristan Jarry has stopped all 61 shots he has faced over his last two starts and hasn?t allowed a goal in nearly 140 minutes of action. The Pens have also won five of his last six starts as the 24-year-old netminder is becoming one of a handful of bright young goaltenders in the league. Incredibly, Jarry has allowed more than two goals in just two of his 11 games this year and sits first in goals against (1.81) and save percentage (.943).

The Montreal Canadiens will try their best to solve Jarry on Tuesday and will probably have to do so at even strength. Montreal?s power play is in the bottom-10 over the last three weeks at 15 percent which is slightly better than its 28th-ranked penalty kill.

We are riding the hottest goalie in the league and will take the Pens 3-way ML on Tuesday night.


INJURY UPDATE: F PATRICE BERGERON, BOSTON BRUINS

The best could get better this week as the No. 1 team in the East, the Boston Bruins, may get the services of their top center in Patrice Bergeron. The two-way pivot has been out since Nov 26 and could suit up Monday versus the Ottawa Senators or Wednesday against the Washington Capitals. The Bruins went 5-2 SU without the centerman but have dropped their last two games and now head out on a four-game road trip along the East coast.

Getting Bergeron back will help in shaping out all four lines and especially the team?s power play. The Bruins? PP scored at 17 percent without Bergeron but was the best in the league at 32 percent with him on the ice. Look for the Bruins to top their team total of 3.5 on Monday and Wednesday if Bergeron does rejoin the team.


HAT TRICK TRENDS

? Through 14 home games, the Washington Capitals have been an Over machine going 11-2-1 O/U at Capital One Arena this year. On Monday, the Metropolitan?s best will entertain the Columbus Blue Jackets with the Over set at 6. The Caps are 8-2-1 O/U on totals of six and the Blue Jackets are 7-7-1 on totals of six.

? The L.A. Kings are surprisingly the only team in the league hitting first-period Overs at 80 percent in their last 10. The Kings will host the New York Rangers on Tuesday night. New York is 8-4 O/U on the road in first-period totals and is 6-4 O/U in its last 10.

? Away favorites went a cool 6-7 ATS last week which hasn?t happened often this year as away favorites are 34-76 (31%) over the course of the season. Away teams hit at over 57 percent in the last seven days going 26-19 which is almost bang on to their season mark of 56.59 percent. On Monday, the Boston Bruins are the only away favorite with their Puck Line (-1.5) at +135.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) Semyon Varlamov stopped 31 shots, Brock Nelson scored twice in the third period, and the New York Islanders beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 5-1 on Monday night.

Ross Johnston, Josh Bailey and Anders Lee also scored for the Islanders, who are 18-0-1 when scoring three or more goals.

Tampa Bay got a goal from Steven Stamkos. Curtis McElhinney stopped 19 shots.

Varlamlov made an in-close rebound save on Stamkos and a diving glove grab on Pat Maroon early in the third.

In addition to Nelson's goals at 7:31 and 14:41, Lee added a power-play goal with 3:55 remaining.

BLUE JACKETS 5, CAPITALS 2

WASHINGTON (AP) - Cam Atkinson scored twice, including a late empty-netter, and Joonas Korpisalo stopped 37 shots to help Columbus beat Washington.

Ryan Murray, Riley Nash and Oliver Bjorkstrand also scored for the Blue Jackets, who snapped their four-game skid. Columbus won for just the third time in nine games.

Chris Tierney, Artem Anisimov and Jean-Gabriel Pageau also scored for the Senators, who were playing their first home game following a five-game trip (1-4-0). Anders Nilsson made 38 saves in Ottawa's first win over the Bruins (20-5-6) since April 6, 2017.

FLAMES 5, AVALANCHE 4, OT

DENVER (AP) - Sean Monahan scored 2:09 into overtime to lift Calgary past Colorado.

Matthew Tkachuk had a goal and an assist, Derek Ryan also scored and David Rittich made 28 saves for the Flames, who have won five in a row under interim coach Geoff Ward and finally broke through against Colorado this season.

Andrew Mangiapane and Michael Frolik scored 1:27 apart to start the third period for Calgary.

The Flames have struggled against the Avalanche of late, starting with the first round of the 2019 playoffs when eighth-seeded Colorado won in five games. The Avs won the first two meetings this season as well.

Nathan MacKinnon, Valeri Nichushkin, Ryan Graves and Joonas Donskoi scored for the Avalanche. Pavel Francouz finished with 28 saves.

Rise of the Flames

The Calgary Flames have had an interesting couple of weeks. Around Thanksgiving we had the unfortunate incident involving Bill Peters, who was relieved of his duties of allegations of racism and abuse. They replaced Peters with interim head coach Geoff Ward on Nov. 29, and suddenly they're unbeaten. Ward said recently that the last couple of weeks have been 'chaotic'. It hasn't been all bad news off the ice, as the team recently hammered out an agreement for a new downtown arena to replace the Scotiabank Saddledome, keeping the team in Calgary for at least the next 35 years.

The Flames beat the Colorado Avalanche in overtime on Monday night, improving to 4-0-0 under Ward's leadership, and 6-0-1 across the past seven overall. The offense has kicked into high gear lately, too, as they're averaging 4.33 goals per game across the past three while allowing 3.4 GPG. That's good for three 'over' results in a row after a run of 10 straight unders from Nov. 9-30. It really is a new era of Calgary hockey lately.

Looking Ahead

Tuesday, Dec. 10

Tampa Bay at Florida: The Lightning and Panthers meet for the third installment of their Sunshine State rivalry. The Panthers fell 5-2 in Sergei Bobrovsky's team debut back on Oct. 3 at Amalie Arena, while the Panthers exacted a little revenge in a 4-3 win over Andrei Vasilevskiy and company on Oct. 5 in the second end of the home-and-home situation. Both games hit the 'over', a frequent occurence in this series. The over has cashed in 38 of the past 55 meetings in this series, and each of the past five in Sunrise. The Lightning have owned the Panthers lately, going 7-1 in the past eight, with the favorite hitting in 14 of the past 17.

N.Y. Rangers at Los Angeles: The Rangers continue their west coast swing, and they hope it goes nearly as well as Sunday's game in Vegas. Alexandar Georgiev and the Blueshirts rolled the Golden Knights by a 5-0 score, now they set sights on the Kings and the shaky Jonathan Quick. New York will be playing the fourth game in six days, and they're 4-1 in the past five of a 4-in-6 situation. The Rangers appear to get stronger with more frequency. The Kings have picked up the pace at home, winning seven of the past 10, but they're still just 17-41 in the past 58 against winning teams. L.A. is 6-2 in the past eight meetings at Staples Center, however, and the Rangers are just 5-11 in the past 16 meetings overall. The over is 5-1-2 in the past eight meetings in SoCal.

Wednesday, Dec. 11

Philadelphia at Colorado: The Flyers and Avalanche tangle at Pepsi Center, and you'll want to watch the injury report closely. Philipp Grubauer is battling a hamstring injury, and he tried to skate Monday morning but was obviously not well enough to get back in there. Pavel Francouz started Monday's game against the Flames, and lost 5-4 in overtime. The Flyers are on a 6-1 roll over their past seven games, and 6-2 in the past eight on the road. Despite the loss Monday, the Avalanche are also 21-8 in the past 29 game at home. The Flyers are just 3-8 in the past 11 trips to Colorado, while the over is 4-1 in the past five meetings.

Thursday, Dec. 12

Boston at Tampa Bay: The Bruins are going to be awfully angry after getting embarrassed in Ottawa by a 5-2 score on Monday night. The B's are on a rare 0-2-1 skid, and it's just the second time all season they have lost back-to-back games in regulation. They have yet to lose three in a row in regulation since March 10-14 of last season. This will be the second meeting of the season, with the Lightning winning the first installment by a 4-3 score in a shootout at TD Garden back on Oct. 17. Vasilevskiy outdueled Tuukka Rask in that battle, and those are your likely starting netminders for this one.

Vegas at St. Louis: The Blues enter the new week on a rare two-game skid, falling 3-0 at Pittsburgh last Wednesday and 5-2 at home on Saturday night to Toronto. In that last game, Jordan Binnington was pulled from his first-ever NHL start. The Golden Knights are coming off a 5-0 beating from the Rangers on Sunday, as Malcolm Subban was again in the crease with Marc-Andre Fleury still away from the team mourning the loss of his father. These teams last met on March 25 in St. Louis last season, with the Blues winning 3-1 behind Binnington against Subban. The Blues also won in Vegas 4-1 behind Jake Allen against Fleury on Nov. 16 of last season, while also winning the first meeting 5-3 on Nov. 1 behind Allen. That's a clean sweep, something the Knights will be looking to change.

Friday, Dec. 13

New Jersey at Colorado: Things haven't been going according to play for the Devils this season. They used the No. 1 overall pick on Jack Hughes, and while he hasn't been a huge disappointment, he hasn't exactly been the second coming of Connor McDavid, either. He has been closer to Nail Yakopov. The tradewinds are also swirling around Taylor Hall, and Colorado has been mentioned as a potential landing spot. Will the Devils end up leaving Denver with Hall on the plane, or will they leave him behind?

The Avalanche entered Wednesday's game on a 6-0-1 run, including a 3-0 run against Eastern Conference teams. Colorado won 3-0 last season on St. Patrick's Day in Denver, and they earned a 5-3 win in Newark on Oct. 18, 2018. They fell 2-1 to the Devils on Dec. 1, 2017 in the meeting at home before that, however, and they were swept during the 2017-18 season. The under is 5-0-1 in the past six meetings at Pepsi Center, and 9-1-3 in the previous 13 meetings overall. In fact, the last over in Denver between these teams came on Nov. 30, 2011 in a game where Martin Brodeur was in net for New Jersey. Yeah, it's been a while.

PITTSBURGH (AP) Tomas Tatar's 10th goal of the season ended Tristan Jarry's franchise-record shutout streak and sparked the Montreal Canadiens to a 4-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday night.

Jarry's shutout run ended at 177:15 on Tatar's power-play goal 12:24 into the second period that tied the game. Joel Armia beat Jarry less than four minutes later to put the Canadiens in front to stay and Shea Weber' scored with just 15 seconds left in the period.

Montreal won for the fourth time in its last 12 meetings with the Penguins.

Carey Price surrendered Jake Guentzel's 17th goal just 2:59 into the first period but quickly settled down to outduel Jarry. Price finished with 33 saves as Montreal won for the third time in four games following an eight-game winless streak.

Jarry began the night leading the league in goals-against average and save percentage thanks to a surge that included back-to-back shutouts against St. Louis and Arizona last week. A point-blank stop on Nick Cousins early in the second period helped Jarry slip past the Tomas Vokoun's shutout mark of 173:06 set in 2013, but Jarry's luck ran out shortly after he surpassed Vokoun in the team record book.

Some sloppy play in front of Jarry helped the Canadiens finally break through. Pittsburgh was on the penalty kill in the second period when defenseman John Marino and forward Brandon Tanev whiffed on clearing attempts. Montreal's Phillip Danault grabbed the loose puck, slipped a pass to Brendan Gallagher to set up a two-on-none. Gallagher set up Tatar, who beat Jarry to the short side. It was the first goal Jarry allowed since the second period of a loss to Columbus on Nov. 29.

Troy Brouwer and Alex Pietrangelo had goals for the Blues, who have lost three in a row following a four-game winning streak. Jake Allen stopped 28 shots.

JETS 5, RED WINGS 1

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) - Blake Wheeler, Andrew Copp and Patrik Laine scored in a two-minute span in the second period and Winnipeg dealt Detroit Red its 12th straight loss.

Wheeler began the barrage at 16:43 of the second when he beat Eric Comrie, who was making his first start in goal since Detroit acquired him in a trade with Arizona on Nov. 30.

Copp and Laine followed with goals 11 seconds apart, boosting the score to 4-1 by the 18:43 mark.

Adam Lowry scored a first-period, short-handed goal and Mark Scheifele added his team-leading 14th of the season on the power play at 5:04 of the third. Copp and Wheeler also each had an assist for the Jets (19-10-2).

Christoffer Ehn scored his first goal of the season for the Red Wings (7-22-3), who are 0-10-2 during their skid. Detroit has the worst record in the NHL at 7-22-3.

DUCKS 3, WILD 2, SO

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Rickard Rickell and Max Comtois scored in the shootout and Anaheim beat Minnesota for its first win in six road games.

Rakell and Cam Fowler scored for the Ducks in a dominant first period during which they had a 14-1 advantage in shots on goal and the Wild lost center Eric Staal to an injury.

Ryan Hartman put the Wild on the board in the second and Ryan Donato tied the game early in third.

Donato had a breakaway early in overtime that Ryan Getzlaf thwarted with a tripping penalty, and the Wild failed to convert on the power play for the fifth time.

John Gibson denied Parise in the shootout. Kevin Fiala went wide right with his attempt.

STARS 2, DEVILS 0

DALLAS (AP) - Ben Bishop made 26 saves, 16 in the third period, and Dallas beat New Jersey, hours after the Stars fired head coach Jim Montgomery.

It was Bishop's first shutout this season and 32nd of his career in Rick Bowness's first game as interim head coach.

Radek Faksa and Joe Pavelski scored in the first period against Devils goalie Mackenzie Blackwood, who made 33 saves.

The Stars won their third straight game.

HURRICANES 6, OILERS 3

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) - Sebastian Aho scored two goals and Carolina beat Edmonton.

Nino Niederreiter, Ryan Dzingel, Jordan Martinook and Dougie Hamilton also scored for the Hurricanes (19-11-1), who have won three straight.

Zack Kassian scored twice and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins added a goal for the Oilers (18-11-4), who have lost three of their last four.

FLAMES 5, COYOTES 2

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Sean Monahan scored for the fourth straight game, Cam Talbot stopped 46 shots and Calgary extended its winning streak to six straight games under interim coach Geoff Ward with a win over listless Arizona.

Calgary played the night before, but had the early jump, scoring two goals on its first four shots in the opening 4:03. The Flames kept on scoring, improving to 7-0-1 following a six-game winless streak (0-5-1).

Michael Frolik and Zac Rinaldo each had a goal and an assist. Johnny Gaudreau and Milan Lucic also scored for Calgary.
