Reimer helps Hurricanes end Flames??? 7-game win streak
December 15, 2019
By The Associated Press

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) James Reimer made 32 stops and Warren Foegele scored twice and the Carolina Hurricanes ended Calgary's seven-game winning streak with a 4-0 victory over the Flames on Saturday.

It's the second shutout of the season for Reimer, who has won five of his past six starts and improved to 7-5-0 on the season.

The 31-year-old was at his best in the first and third periods. He kept the game scoreless in the opening 20 minutes, despite Calgary holding a 12-4 edge in shots. When the Flames pressed in the third period, fueled by four power plays in the final 11 minutes, he once again stood tall.

Brock McGinn and Dougie Hamilton also scored for Carolina, which has points in five straight (4-0-1). The Hurricanes' five-game road trip will continue Tuesday in Winnipeg.

Calgary lost for the first time since Geoff Ward took over from Bill Peters behind the bench. The 57-year-old had won his first six games after being named interim head coach on Nov. 29.

ISLANDERS 3, SABRES 2, OT

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) - Anthony Beauvillier scored in overtime to lift the Islanders over Buffalo, extending New York's home winning streak to six games.

Beauvillier scored on a breakaway at 3:04 against Sabres goalie Linus Ullmark for his 10th goal of the season. He finished off a sequence in overtime in which he accidentally got tangled up with Ullmark in the crease, then was tripped in the Sabres zone before he corralled the puck for the winning play.

The Islanders improved to 13-2-1 overall between Nassau Coliseum and Brooklyn's Barclays Center this season while the Sabres had their three-game winning streak snapped.

Semyon Varmalov made 33 saves for the victory.

Jordan Eberle had snapped a 1-1 tie with a goal early in the third period to give the Islanders a 2-1 lead, but Sabres captain Jack Eichel tied it with a power-play goal at 18:14 after the Sabres pulled Ullmark for an extra skater.

Eichel's 23rd goal of the season was assisted by Rasmus Ristolainen and sent the game into overtime.

DEVILS 2, COYOTES 1

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Kyle Palmieri scored the tiebreaking goal in the third period, and New Jersey held on to snap a seven-game losing streak.

Jesper Boqvist also scored, and Michael McLeod and Miles Wood each had two assists to help the Devils get their first win this month. Mackenzie Blackwood stopped 31 shots.

Alex Goligoski scored for Arizona, which has lost five of its last seven home games but remains in sole possession of first place in the Pacific Division. Vinnie Hinostroza picked up his fourth assist in two games, and Darcy Kuemper finished with 31 saves.

Palmieri's team-leading 12th goal of the season came with 8:26 left in the third period as he flipped the puck high into net past Kuemper.

The Devils played without Taylor Hall for the second straight game amid trade talks - with the Coyotes mentioned as one of the teams interested in acquiring the forward.

DUCKS 4, RANGERS 3, SO

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Jakob Silfverberg and Ondrej Kase scored in the shootout after Hampus Lindholm tied the game on the power play with 1:46 remaining in the third period and Anaheim rallied for a win over New York.

Silfverberg also had a power-play goal for the Ducks. Erik Gudbranson also scored, and John Gibson stopped three shots in the shootout after making 29 saves through overtime.

Mika Zibanejad had two goals for the second straight game and Artemi Panarin scored for the fourth consecutive game, but the Rangers ended up going 2-1-1 on their four-game road trip.

Henrik Lundqvist made 39 saves, and the Rangers still have not won consecutive games this month.

Lindholm made it 3-all at 18:14 from the high slot just as Gibson was making his way toward the bench for the extra attacker with Brady Skjei in the box for tripping.

SENATORS 4, BLUE JACKETS 3, OT

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) - Anthony Duclair had a hat trick, including a power-play goal at 1:56 of overtime, and Ottawa topped Columbus.

Duclair has 18 goals on the season, including eight in his past five games.

Connor Brown also scored for the Senators. Anders Nilsson stopped 38 shots.

Alexandre Texier had two third-period goals for the Blue Jackets, who rallied from a 3-1 deficit to force overtime. Cam Atkinson added a first-period goal.

Elvis Merzlikins started the game, but was pulled after the first period where he allowed two goals on eight shots. Joonas Korpisalo came on in relief and allowed two goals on 19 shots.

Nilsson made a couple of fantastic saves in overtime, one on Atkinson and one on Oliver Bjorkstrand.

The Senators led 3-1 going into the third, but the Blue Jackets cut the lead to one four minutes into the third as Texier, from the slot, slid one between Nilsson's pads. Texier tied the game with his second of the game midway through the period.

WILD 4, FLYERS 1

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Eric Staal scored twice and Minnesota kept up its winning ways at home.

Zach Parise also scored and Carson Soucy added an empty-netter to help the Wild improve to 9-0-3 in the past 12 games at Xcel Energy Center. Only Boston (17) and the New York Islanders (13) have longer home point streaks this season.

The Wild were near the bottom of the league after winning just six of their first 18 games, but they are 10-1-4 in their last 15.

James van Riemsdyk scored and Carter Hart made 24 saves for Philadelphia. The Flyers have dropped three of four after winning five straight and lost back-to-back games for the first time since Oct. 27-29.

BRUINS 4, PANTHERS 2

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) - David Pastrnak scored twice to help Boston snap a five-game winless streak.

David Krejci and Jake DeBrusk each had a goal and an assist for the Bruins, and Torey Krug had two assists. Jaroslav Halak stopped 31 shots.

Keith Yandle and Mark Pysyk scored for the Panthers, who lost their third straight. Sergei Bobrovsky made 38 saves, including 21 in the first period.

Florida's Aleksander Barkov had to be helped off the ice by teammates late in the third period with an apparent leg injury after being forced into the boards by Boston's Charlie McAvoy.

STARS 4, PREDATORS 1

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Anton Khudobin stopped 37 shots and Dallas won for the fourth time in five games.

Blake Comeau, Roope Hintz, Jamie Oleksiak and Andrew Cogliano each scored in the second period after the Stars fell behind. Alexander Radulov had two assists.

Austin Watson scored for Nashville and Pekka Rinne finished with 18 saves. The Predators have lost two straight.

This was the first meeting between the teams since the Stars eliminated the Predators in the first round of the playoffs last season.

Nashville on the scoreboard first, as Dan Hamhuis fired a shot from just inside the blue line that was deflected by Watson from the slot at 1:04 of the second period.

PENGUINS 5, KINGS 4, SO

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Bryan Rust scored twice in regulation and got the lone goal in the shootout to lift Pittsburgh.

Rust faked a shot on the forehand and flipped a blocker-side backhander past Kings goaltender Jonathan Quick for the deciding goal. The Kings had a chance to continue the shootout, but the puck rolled off Adrian Kempe's stick, giving the Penguins their fifth win in six games.

Rust, who scored the overtime winner Thursday against Columbus, had a 5-on-3 power-play goal in the second period. Teddy Blueger and Jack Johnson scored third-period goals, while Jake Guentzel and Kris Letang both had three assists. Pittsburgh has points in 17 of its last 22 games, including 13 wins.

Tristan Jarry, who entered the game with three shutouts in his last four appearances, made 38 saves for Pittsburgh.

Tyler Toffoli, Michael Amadio, Kyle Clifford and Austin Wagner scored for the Kings, who have lost six of their last nine. Quick stopped 23 shots.

CAPITALS 5, LIGHTNING 2

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Lars Eller and Garnet Hathaway scored 44 seconds apart early in the third period as NHL-leading Washington beat Tampa Bay.

Ellers scored from the left circle at 1:58 and Hathaway made it 3-1 from in-close.

Nicklas Backstrom, T.J Oshie and Tom Wilson had the other Washington goals, and rookie goalie Ilya Samsonov stopped 26 shots.

Tampa Bay got goals from Brayden Point and Jan Rutta. Andrei Vasilevskiy made 29 saves. The Lightning dropped to 8-7-1 at home, matching the total of losses (32-7-2) from all of last season.

MAPLE LEAFS 4, OILERS 1

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) - Frederik Andersen stopped 36 shots to help Toronto beat Edmonton.

Alexander Kerfoot had a goal and an assist and Ilya Mikheyev, Frederik Gauthier and Mitch Marner also scored as the Maple Leafs won for the third time in four games.

Alex Chiasson scored for the Oilers, who have lost four in a row. Mikko Koskinen finished with 28 saves.

RED WINGS 2, CANADIENS 1

MONTREAL (AP) - Mike Green scored a power-play goal in the third period, Jonathan Bernier made 42 saves, and Detroit held off Montreal.

Tyler Bertuzzi also scored for the Red Wings, who have won two games in a row since dropping 12 straight. Green also added an assist and his goal was the game-winner when Tomas Tatar scored in the game's final minute for the Canadiens.

Montreal outshot Detroit 43-20 but had its three-game win streak snapped. Carey Price made 18 saves in defeat.

The Red Wings snapped a 12-game winless streak (0-10-2) by beating the Winnipeg Jets 5-2 on Thursday but entered the Bell Centre with the league's worst record and worst offense.

BLUES 4, BLACKHAWKS 3

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Justin Faulk capped a four-goal, third-period rally with a late tally as St. Louis beat Chicago.

St. Louis scored four times in a span of 12:54 to erase a three-goal deficit. Tyler Bozak scored twice and Jacob de la Rose also had a goal to tie it at 3-3. It was the first NHL goal for de la Rose. Jordan Binnington stopped 19 shots.

Brandon Saad scored twice and Patrick Kane also had a goal for Chicago, which led 3-0 early in the third period. Corey Crawford finished with 34 saves.

STRUGGLING ALL-STAR

The Nashville Predators and, more specifically, goaltender Pekka Rinne are in a slump. The veteran goalie gave up four more goals on Saturday which brings his total to 29 goals allowed in his last eight games. On Monday, Rinne and the Preds will travel to the Big Apple to take on the New York Rangers.

The Rangers averaged nearly four goals a game over their most recent four-game road trip as their power play went 4-for-12 as well. New York also sits fourth in the league in expected goals since December 8.

Nashville has recently been playing better than usual on it's penalty kill, as it has killed off its last seven penalties, but still sits 24th in the league at 77.5 percent. The Preds are due to give up a PP tally or two and the young guys from New York might oblige. Take the Rangers? team total Over 2.5.

A BOLT OF OVER

The Ottawa Senators have hit the Over in six of their last eight games as their scoring chance shooting percentage sits fifth-best in December. They have also allowed their opponents to score three or more goals in six of their last eight, making Tuesday?s match against the Tampa Bay Lighting a great spot for an Over.

The Lightning may be the most disappointing team this year as they sit fifth in the Atlantic Division. The Bolts are just 2-5 SU at home in their last seven but the goal-light operator has been busy at the Amalie Arena as Tampa has hit the Over nine times in its last twelve home games.

Tampa Bay has the second-best power play in the league and could get ample opportunity to prove themselves against the Senators? who are averaging nearly four minor penalties a game in December. Take the Over 6.5 on this Tuesday matchup.

STINGY NETMINDERS

The Carolina Hurricanes have not allowed a regulation goal in over 130 minutes of hockey ? a streak that spans three games. On Wednesday, they will square off with the Winnipeg Jets who bounced back Sunday night with a win after losing to the lowly Red Wings on Saturday.

Wednesday night?s tilt has the looks of a low-scoring affair. Both Carolina and Winnipeg sit in the Top-6 in goals against on the season but have been even stingier in December. Combined, the Jets and Canes have allowed just 22 goals in their 11 games this month.

Winnipeg is 4-9-2 O/U at home this year and are 2-5-1 O/U in its last eight while the Hurricanes are 2-9 O/U in their last 11 and 7-9 O/U on the road this year. Hit the Under 5.5 on Tuesday and if it opens at 6, give it a double-tap.

SNOWSTORM HEADED TO CHICAGO

The Colorado Avalanche will take their four-game road winning streak into St. Louis on Monday and then to Chicago on Wednesday. Colorado?s offense is back to full health and has been getting scoring production from its Top-9 forwards. That's bad news for the Blackhawks who have allowed their opponents to score four or more goals in seven of their last nine and are 2-4 ATS in their last six.

Colorado has been one of the league's best traveling teams this year and are 11-6 SU on the road and are averaging 3.4 goals a game while playing better defensive hockey than any other club over their last 10 games.

With how hot (and deep) the offense has been of late as well as the stellar play from goalie Pavel Francouz, we are going to ride the Avalanche -1.5 Puck Line on Wednesday night.

GOALIE PROFILE: SEMYON VARLAMOV, NEW YORK ISLANDERS

Nobody thought that Semyon Varlamov would be 11-3-2 with a 2.24 goals against and a .928 save percentage halfway through December, but here we are. The Russian netminder finds himself among the league leaders in most goalie stats and has been a winner in each of his last four starts.

On Tuesday, the Islanders will host the Nashville Predators who will have to do something most teams haven?t been able to do this year, which is score goals in Long Island. Varlamov and the Islanders have not allowed an opponent to score more than two goals at home in six of their last eight. New York has just shut it down defensively this month and allows the fewest goals against at home.

We feel that the Islanders? ML is the right play here, but if it is outpriced (below -140) we have no problems taking the Under 2.5 on the Predators? team total.

INJURY UPDATE: F JARED SPURGEON, MINNESOTA WILD

The Minnesota Wild have climbed up the Western Conference standings of late having picked up the second-most points in the West over their last 10 games. Things could be getting even better with the return of defenseman Jared Spurgeon this week.

Spurgeon has been out since December 3 and was second on the team in average ice time at 23:15 a game. Getting the D-man back for Tuesday?s contest against the Vegas Golden Knights could be a big boost for the Wild?s special teams as Spurgeon plays on the top penalty-killing unit and the second power-play unit. The Wild ML should be a great value with Minnesota playing on the road.

HAT TRICK TRENDS

? The Colorado Avalanche have the league?s best away record on first-period Overs. The Avs are 14-3 O/U first-period totals on the road and will head to St. Louis on Monday to take on the Blues who are 4-2 O/U first-period totals in their last six.

? Under bettors had a great week last week as the Unders in 26 of the 44 games (59%). There are fewer totals of 6.5 these days as the league has seen the Under trend take over. Monday?s opening lines listed zero games at 6.5. The Washington at Columbus total of 6 is looking like our favorite for the Under.

? On Tuesday, the Ottawa Senators will face the Lightning in what will be the tail end of a back-to-back. The Sens should be big underdogs, especially on the road. Ottawa is 5-5 SU in their last 10 games when being a +150 underdog or higher.

Korpisalo helps Blue Jackets beat Capitals 3-0
December 16, 2019
By The Associated Press

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) Joonas Korpisalo stopped 30 shots in his third career shutout, and the Columbus Blue Jackets beat the Washington Capitals 3-0 on Monday night.

It was just the second win in eight games for Columbus, with both coming against NHL leading-Washington.

Oliver Bjorkstrand scored twice for the Blue Jackets, and Eric Robinson had the other goal.

Braden Holtby stopped 18 shots for Washington, which lost for just the second time in its last 10 games and suffered its first road defeat since Nov. 20.

BLUES 5, AVALANCHE 2

ST. LOUIS (AP) - David Perron scored three times in his fifth career hat trick, powering St. Louis to the victory.

Vince Dunn and Jordan Kyrou also scored for the Blues, who remained atop the Central Division with 48 points. The Avalanche stayed in second with 45.

Jordan Binnington made 26 saves in his third consecutive victory.

Colorado goalie Philipp Grubauer made his first appearance since he suffered a lower-body injury Dec. 7 in Boston. He stopped 31 shots.

Nazem Kadri and Mikko Rantanen scored in the second period for the Avalanche.

PREDATORS 5, RANGERS 2

NEW YORK (AP) - Roman Josi had two goals and an assist, leading Nashville to the victory.

Rocco Grimaldi, Mattias Ekholm and Ryan Ellis also scored to help the Predators win for the third time in five games. Juuse Saros stopped 39 shots.

Chris Kreider and Artemi Panarin scored for the Rangers, losers of three of their last five (2-2-1). Alexandar Georgiev made 19 saves.

The Rangers went 0 for 4 on the power play, with Saros stopping all 11 shots during the man advantages.

OILERS 2, STARS 1

DALLAS (AP) - Leon Draisaitl scored another power-play goal for Edmonton, and Mikko Koskinen made 34 saves.

Edmonton has scored on an NHL-leading 31% of its power plays, including 10 man-advantage goals in its past eight games.

Koskinen made 17 saves in the third period. He allowed only Tyler Seguin's goal with 2:37 to play after the Stars had pulled Ben Bishop for an extra skater.

Zack Kassian also scored for the Oilers, and Connor McDavid had two assists.

PANTHERS 6, SENATORS 1

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) - Noel Acciari scored three times for his first career hat trick, and the Panthers snapped a three-game losing streak.

Aleksander Barkov, Mike Matheson and Dominic Toninato also scored for Florida, and Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 29 shots in his sixth straight start. Jonathan Huberdeau had four assists, giving him 400 career points in 500 NHL games.

Artem Anisimov scored for the Senators, who have lost eight of their past 11 games. Anders Nilsson made 25 saves.

Florida grabbed control with five goals in the second period.

Tuesday?s 6-pack

Interesting Week 16 NFL games:

? Bills @ Patriots (-6.5)

? Texans (-3) @ Buccaneers

? Saints (-1.5) @ Titans

? Bengals @ Dolphins (-1)

? Cowboys (-2.5) @ Eagles

? Packers @ Vikings (-4.5)

Quote of the Day:
?I mean, they could be (the final two games). I don?t necessarily expect that it is, or I don?t necessarily think it?s a crazy thought that it will be. I think you just don?t know.?
Philip Rivers, contemplating his future

Tuesday?s quiz
What fine actor played the football coach at Wisconsin in the movie Draft Day?

Monday?s quiz
Ben Simmons played his one year of college basketball at LSU.

Sunday?s quiz
The Liberty Bowl is played in Memphis every December.

******************************

Tuesday?s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but?..

13) Arizona Diamondbacks gave Madison Bumgarner $85M for five years, lot less than the $118M the Phillies gave Zack Wheeler for the same five years. Surprising.

12) Seahawks? WR Josh Gordon has been suspended indefinitely for violating the NFL?s policies on performance-enhancing substances and substances of abuse.

If anyone else gives this guy a chance, they?re a moron; Gordon should be banned by the NFL. He?s been suspended six times since 2013. Enough already.

11) Jameis Winston is the first player EVER to throw for 450+ yards in consecutive regular-season games (Drew Brees did it in consecutive playoff games).

10) Carolina Panthers will start rookie QB Will Grier this week against Indianapolis; Carolina lost its last six games, has already fired their coach.

9) Saints 34, Colts 7:
? Horrible, non-competitive effort by the Colts, one of the worst Monday night games ever.
? New Orleans needs two wins and a Green Bay loss to earn a bye in playoffs.
? ESPN crew turned telecast into a Drew Brees infomercial; Brees was 29-30/307 with four TD passes.

? Booger McFarland called Tom Brady the best QB ever; so if he was drafting a team, with every QB ever (in his prime) available, and he had the first pick, he would take Brady over Elway, Marino, Montana and Peyton Manning? Seriously?

8) Sunday night was the first time the Buffalo Bills had been on Sunday Night Football since 2007; it was the first time they beat the Steelers since 1999.

7) Baseball stuff:
? Texas Rangers acquired 34-year old P Corey Kluber from Cleveland, for Delino DeShields Jr and a prospect.
? Minnesota signed reliever Sergio Romo.
? Tampa Bay signed Japanese OF/1B Yoshitomo Tsutsugo.

6) North Carolina lost four of its last five games after a 5-0 start; they lost to Wofford Sunday (for 2nd time in three years) after scoring 49-47 points in their previous two losses. Tar Heels have the #308 eFG%; they?re not shooting ball well (28.7% on arc (#304), 44.6% inside arc (#298), 63.2% on line (#317)).

Freshman Cole Anthony is their best player, and he is out indefinitely now with a knee injury. Carolina plays at Gonzaga Wednesday; they?ll be the underdog there.

5) Miami Heat are paying Dion Waiters $12,100,000 this year, $12,650,000 next year, but they have problems with him.

Miami suspended Waiters for the second time in three months when he called in sick, then later posted a picture of himself enjoying some time on a boat, one of more than a half dozen team violations by Waiters this season, including complaining on the bench during the preseason, refusing to do a required weigh-in and several inappropriate posts on social media.

4) Virginia Tech announced Tracy Claeys as the team?s new linebackers coach; Claeys was the DC at Washington State this year, but was the scapegoat and left his job after the Coogs lost 67-63 to UCLA, blowing a 49-17 third quarter lead.

3) Milwaukee Brewers signed OF Avasail Garcia to a 2-year contract for $20M; Garcia hit 20 HR?s with 72 RBI for the Rays LY, in what CBS Sports described as: ???.an uncharacteristically productive season.? Not exactly high praise there.

2) Kansas Jayhawks are the 5th #1 team in college basketball this season, the most #1 teams ever for this early in the season.

1) Out of 353 Division I college basketball teams, only four are still unbeaten; Liberty and Duquesne are two of them (Auburn, San Diego State are the others). Go figure.

In the Crease - Week 12
Joe Williams

Kids and the Hall

The Arizona Coyotes acquired F Taylor Hall from the New Jersey Devils on Wednesday, bolstering an already strong group in the desert. They head into play tied with the Edmonton Oilers at the top of the Pacific Division with 42 points and a game in hand. They're each one point ahead of the Vegas Golden Knights, and two points ahead of the Calgary Flames. So the Coyotes kicked off the arms race by strengthening their roster with Hall joining big offseason acquisition F Phil Kessel and a host of other younger forwards. The Coyotes rank 25th in the NHL with just 2.6 goals per game, and they're 19th in shots on goal (31.0). While the power play ranks 10th at 20.8 percent, the Coyotes needed some additional firepower.

The Coyotes have struggled, including a 2-1 loss to the aforementioned Devils on Saturday as -215 favorites. They haven't won consecutive games at home since winning three in a row on home ice from Oct. 10-19. Arizona has struggled, alternative wins and losses in the past six outings despite the fact Darcy Kuemper has been one of the top goaltenders in the NHL. He is 14-7-0 with a sparkling 1.97 goals-against average and .935 save percentage with two shutouts. He might be approaching 20 wins if he was getting any kind of regular offensive support.

Looking Ahead

Tuesday, Dec. 17

Buffalo at Toronto:
The Sabres and Maple Leafs square off at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto for the third time since Nov. 29. The Sabres won the first battle in Buffalo by a 6-4 score as +135 underdogs, while the Leafs returned the favor by a 2-1 score in overtime as -245 favorites. In that back-to-back set, Linus Ullmark bested Michael Hutchinson, while in the meeting in Toronto we had Frederik Andersen topping Carter Hutton. The latter is the goaltender battle to expect on Tuesday. The Sabres are 1-6 in the past seven meetings, and 4-17 in their past 21 forays across the Peace Bridge and up the QEW to Toronto.

Arizona at San Jose:
The Coyotes will have their new toy on display at SAP Center, as Hall joins the roster for the first time in San Jose. Arizona has actually been heads and tails better on the road, going 8-8-0-1 at home, and 11-4-2-1 (14-4) in their 17 games on the road (+253). The Coyotes are 9-4 in the past 13 on the road, but just 1-4 in the past five inside the division. The Sharks are just 1-6 in the past seven overall, but they're 5-0 inside the Pacific Division and 10-3 in the past 13 against Western Conference foes. The Coyotes are 3-7 in the past 10 meetings with the Sharks, and just 7-17 in the past 24 trips to the Bay Area.

Wednesday, Dec. 18

Edmonton at St. Louis:
The Blues won the Stanley Cup last season, while the Oilers pine to just make the playoffs and have another shot at the holy grail of hockey. After years of top picks and then disappointment, Edmonton is finally starting to put it together this season. While they're solid overall, they have won just once in the past five overall, and they're 3-15 in the past 18 against the Central Division. They'll need to make inroads against the Central if they want to do any damage. Conversely, the Blues have won nine of the past 12 against the Pacific Division, and they're 7-3 in the past 10 games overall. Edmonton is 4-12 in the past 16 trips to St. Louis, and they're just 9-24 in the past 33 meetings overall in the series. The under is also 7-3 in the past 10 meetings.

Thursday, Dec. 19

N.Y. Islanders at Boston:
The Islanders and Bruins hook up at TD Garden in Beantown. The Bruins have been super powerful, ranking fourth in the NHL with 3.4 goals per game while ranking third on the power play at 26.2 percent. Defensively, the B's rank fourth with 2.4 goals allowed, while ranking 10th in penalty kill at 83.3 percent. This is the first meeting of the season between these two Eastern Conference contenders. The last time these teams met on March 19 on the Island, the B's came away with a 5-0 victory behind Tuukka Rask. In fact, the B's swept the three-game series while outscoring the Isles 11-2. The Bruins have won three straight at home against the Islanders, outscoring them 8-3 with the 'under' cashing in four straight battles in Massachusetts.

Vancouver at Vegas:
The Canucks were dumped 6-3 in Vegas, as Marc-Andre Fleury and the home team topped Jacob Markstrom, who allowed five goals before getting pulled in favor of Michael DiPietro on Sunday. Since Vegas came into the league before the 2017-18 season, the Golden Knights have posted a 8-1 record, with the lone loss at home. They're 4-0 all-time in Vancouver, outscoring the Canucks by a 20-11 margin wit the 'over' hitting in each of those four matchups. The over is 6-3 in the nine all-time meetings, including Sunday, with the Golden Knights averaging 4.6 goals per game to 2.3 goals per game for the Canucks.

Friday, Dec. 20

Pittsburgh at Edmonton:
The Penguins hit the road for Alberta to battle the Oilers in what should be a high-scoring game. Of course, that was the thinking in the first meeting on Nov. 2, but the Pens fell 2-1 in overtime at PGH Paints Arena. Pittsburgh is 9-2 in the past 11 meetings, although they've been surprising close battles almost every time. In fact, five of the past eight games have been decided in overtime or a shootout. All but one of the previous nine meetings have been decided by one goal, so remember that if you're considering betting the puck line. The Penguins have won five straight trips to Edmonton, with the under 4-1 dating back to Jan. 10, 2014. That was an Oilers victory in overtime, 6-5, behind Jeff Zatkoff. Yeah, it's been a while.

Kopitar scores in OT to rally Kings past Bruins 4-3
December 17, 2019
By The Associated Press

BOSTON (AP) Anze Kopitar scored at 3:23 of overtime and the Los Angeles Kings rallied to beat the Boston Bruins 4-3 on Tuesday night.

Kopitar beat Tuukka Rask with a high wrist shot after Jonathan Quick had come up with a huge save at the other end, giving the Kings their fourth win in five games and extending their best stretch of the season (4-0-1).

Blake Lizotte had a goal and an assist for the Kings, who couldn't hold on to leads of 1-0 and 2-1 before rallying for a thrilling finish. Down 3-2 late in the third, the Kings pulled Quick for an extra skater and tied it on Matt Roy's slap shot with 2:01 left in regulation.

Adrian Kempe also scored for Los Angeles and Quick finished with 37 saves.

Danton Heinen had a goal and assist, and Patrice Bergeron and Brandon Carlo also scored for Boston, which fell to 1-5-1 in its last six and has lost two straight at home. Rask had 23 saves.

LIGHTNING 4, SENATORS 3, OT

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Anthony Cirelli scored with 12.7 seconds left in overtime to lift Tampa Bay past Ottawa.

Cirelli split two defenders near the blue line and lifted a shot past Marcus Hogberg.

Tampa Bay also got goals from Nikita Kucherov, Cedric Paquette and Brayden Point, and Andrei Vasilevskiy made 25 saves.

Mark Borowiecki, Connor Brown and Anthony Duclair scored for the Senators. Hogberg, playing in his third game this season and seventh overall, stopped 36 shots.

MAPLE LEAFS 5, SABRES 3

TORONTO (AP) - Auston Matthews scored twice and Toronto held on to beat Buffalo.

Frederik Gauthier had a goal and an assist, and Dmytro Timashov and Ilya Mikheyev also scored for the Maple Leafs. Frederik Andersen stopped 27 shots and Tyson Barrie had two assists.

Matthews became the second player in franchise history to score at least 20 goals in each of his first four NHL seasons, joining Dave Keon, who did it in six straight from 1960-66.

Rasmus Dahlin and Jack Eichel had a goal and an assist each, and Kyle Okposo scored for Buffalo. Victor Olofsson added two assists, and Linus Ullmark finished with 28 saves for the Sabres.

PREDATORS 8, ISLANDERS 3

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) - Nick Bonino had the tiebreaking goal late in the second period as Nashville got seven consecutive scores to rally for its second win in two nights.

Craig Smith had two goals and an assist, Filip Forsberg, Calle Jarnkrok, Roman Josi and Ryan Johansen each had a goal and an assist, and Rocco Grimaldi also scored to help the Predators win for the fourth time in six games. Pekka Rinne stopped 27 shots.

Brock Nelson, Derrick Brassard and Casey Cizikas scored in a 5:16 span of the second period to give the Islanders a 3-1 lead. However, it was all Predators after that. Thomas Greiss gave up five goals on 15 shots through two periods, and Semyon Varlamov stopped six of the nine shots he faced in the third.

FLYERS 4, DUCKS 1

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia Flyers honored cancer-stricken teammate Oskar Lindblom and beat Anaheim behind goals by Claude Giroux, David Kase and Jake Voracek.

The Flyers played their first home game since Lindblom was diagnosed with Ewing's sarcoma, a cancerous tumor that grows in the bones or in the tissue around bones. The 23-year-old from Sweden, who is out for the season, stopped by the locker room during morning skate and visited his teammates.

The Flyers warmed up in purple ''Hockey Fights Cancer'' jerseys and will auction them off with proceeds going to Ewing's sarcoma research. They left ''I Fight For Oskar'' signs on every seat, and fans held them during a tribute video for Lindblom. Ducks and Flyers players tapped their sticks and fans stood and applauded the promising forward who had 11 goals and 18 points in 30 games this season. Philadelphia sold (hash)OskarStrong purple shirts, and proceeds from the 50/50 raffle were donated toward Ewing's sarcoma research.

Carter Hart had 40 saves for the Flyers, and Sean Couturier added an empty-netter in the final seconds.

Rickard Rakell made it 2-1 in the second with his 10th goal for Anaheim. John Gibson finished with 27 saves.

BLUE JACKETS 5, RED WINGS 3

DETROIT (AP) - Pierre-Luc Dubois scored early in the third period and Gustav Nyquist added an empty-netter in the closing seconds, helping Columbus win its second straight.

Cam Atkinson and Oliver Bjorkstrand had goals 1:04 apart to put Columbus ahead midway through the first, and Kevin Stenlund tied it 3-3 midway through the second with his first NHL goal. Joonas Korpisalo finished with 18 saves.

Adam Erne scored twice and Tyler Bertuzzi also scored for Detroit, and Jonathan Bernier stopped 34 shots. The Red Wings have lost 14 of their last 16 games.

HURRICANES 6, JETS 3

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) - Sebastian Aho and Jordan Staal each scored twice, Andrei Svechnikov added his second lacrosse-style goal of the season, and Carolina extended its point streak to 5-0-1.

Lucas Wallmark also scored for Carolina, Dougie Hamilton contributed three assists, and Nino Niederreiter added two. Petr Mrazek made 30 saves for the Hurricanes, who are 3-0-1 during a five-game trip that ends Thursday in Colorado.

Jack Roslovic, Patrik Laine and Mark Scheifele scored for the Jets, who had won five straight at home. Connor Hellebuyck stopped 18 shots for Winnipeg before Laurent Brossoit replaced him to start the third period with Carolina ahead 5-2. Brossoit made four saves.
