Bill Walton was the TV analyst on this game; he spoke the truth when he talked about how Barry is one of the 10-12 best players ever. He was as good as Larry Bird, but he played before the NBA took off inn popularity and before ESPN began in the early 80?s.

Mike Anderson is doing a nice job in his first year at St John?s; they?re 11-2 after this upset win.

2) One of the reasons a lot of college basketball teams like to play these neutral court games just before Christmas, is that it is legal for them to pay for kids? trips home from the neutral site to wherever the player lives, os he can have a few days off for Christmas.

1) Good news is that tonight it starts getting dark later every day; its all downhill until spring. Lot of bowl games and college hoop coming up in the next week, as 2019 winds down to its end.

Flames score 3 power-play goals in 5-1 win over Stars

DALLAS (AP) Matthew Tkachuk, Sean Monahan and Mikael Backlund scored power-play goals and the Calgary Flames beat the Dallas Stars 5-1 on Sunday night.

Tkachuk's 14th goal of the season broke a 1-1 tie in the second period. Monahan also scored in the second. Backlund's goal in the third period preceded a short-handed, empty-net goal by Derek Ryan.

The three power-play goals were the most for Calgary in a game this season, and the most allowed by Dallas.

Flames goalie David Rittich made 26 saves and picked up his first career assist on Backlund's goal.

Andrew Mangiapane scored Calgary's first goal in the opening period. Denis Gurianov countered 38 seconds later for Dallas.

Elias Lindholm assisted on Calgary's first three goals.

Stars goalie Ben Bishop had 25 saves.

The Flames had been 0-2-1 in their previous three games. Dallas has lost three of four.

COYOTES 5, RED WINGS 2

DETROIT (AP) - Clayton Keller had two goals and an assist to lead Arizona past Detroit.

Carl Soderberg, Taylor Hall and Christian Dvorak also scored for Arizona. Coyotes defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson had three assists and Nick Schmaltz added two.

Antti Raanta made 28 saves in Arizona's first game since No. 1 goalie Darcy Kuemper sustained a lower-body injury Friday during an 8-5 loss to Minnesota.

Filip Zadina and Tyler Bertuzzi scored for Detroit. Jimmy Howard stopped 40 shots in his return after missing 10 games with a lower-body injury.

RANGERS 5, DUCKS 1

NEW YORK (AP) - Chris Kreider scored twice and New York beat Anaheim to end a three-game losing streak.

Mika Zibanejad had a goal and an assist, while Filip Chytil and Brett Howden also scored for the Rangers. Henrik Lundqvist made 19 saves.

Sam Steel scored for the Ducks and Ryan Miller made 36 saves.

GOLDEN KNIGHTS 3, SHARKS 1

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - Shea Theodore scored the tiebreaking goal with 11:55 remaining in the third period and Vegas beat struggling San Jose for its ninth win in 13 games.

Paul Stastny and Jonathan Marchessault also scored, and Malcolm Subban made 37 saves to keep the Golden Knights tied for first place in the Pacific Division with Arizona.

Logan Couture scored for the Sharks, who lost for the ninth time in 10 games. Aaron Dell made 34 saves.

Devils score into own net, gifting Toronto a 5-4 OT win

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) Devils defenseman Damon Severson backhanded the puck into his own net in overtime, gifting the Toronto Maple Leafs a 5-4 win over New Jersey on Friday night for their season-best sixth straight victory.

Severson got the puck after Toronto's William Nylander lost control while driving toward New Jersey's net. The 25-year-old Severson inadvertently beat goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood while trying to clear the puck out of danger. Nylander was credited with the goal.

Zach Hyman, Ilya Mikheyev, Kasperi Kapanen and John Tavares scored for Toronto. Michael Hutchinson had 24 saves in winning his second straight start.

Mikheyev left the ice in the third period after being cut on his wrist by Jack Hughes' skate. He was taken to a hospital for evaluation, the Maple Leafs said.

Nico Hischier, Nitita Gusev, Kyle Palmieri and Jesper Bratt tallied for New Jersey, and Blackwood made 32 saves.

RANGERS 5, HURRICANES 3

NEW YORK (AP) - Mika Zibanejad had two goals and an assist, Henrik Lundqvist stopped 39 shots, and New York beat Carolina.

Artemi Panarin had a goal and two assists, Chris Kreider had a goal and an assist, and Ryan Strome also scored to help New York get its second win in six games (2-3-1). Tony DeAngelo and Jacob Trouba each had two assists.

Lundqvist improved to 3-0-0 against the Hurricanes this season while stopping 125 of 132 shots in the wins.

Lucas Wallmark had a goal and an assist, Brett Pesce and Sebastian Aho also scored, and Teuvo Terravainen had two assists for the Hurricanes. James Reimer finished with 19 saves for Carolina, which has lost three straight after a 6-0-1 stretch.

CAPITALS 2, BLUE JACKETS 1, OT

WASHINGTON (AP) - Carl Hagelin scored his first goal of the season, T.J. Oshie scored in overtime and Washington snapped Columbus' winning streak at five.

Hagelin's tying goal in the third helped Washington remained the only team in the NHL without back-to-back regulation losses this season. Oshie scored the winner on the power play 3:13 into overtime to give the Capitals their first victory against Columbus in three tries this month.

Rookie goaltender Ilya Samsonov made 27 saves to win his first career start against Columbus. He was solid all night and couldn't do much on the lone Blue Jackets goal by rookie Jakob Lilja.

Columbus extended its point streak to nine games. It's 6-0-3 in that span.

Joonas Korpisalo was excellent in net for the Blue Jackets, stopping 34 of the 36 shots he faced.

BRUINS 3, SABRES 0

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Patrice Bergeron scored two goals for the third consecutive game, and Boston beat Buffalo.

Bergeron became the fifth player in Bruins history to score two goals in at least three games and the first Bruin since Cam Neely in 1988-89 to accomplish the feat.

Brandon Carlo also scored and Jaroslav Halak made 26 saves for Boston. It was Halak's third shutout of the season.

Linus Ullmark made 22 saves for Buffalo, which has lost five of its last six games.

BLUES 5, JETS 4, OT

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) - David Perron scored 3:14 into overtime and St. Louis extended its winning streak to seven games.

Perron scored his 16h goal of the season and added an assist.

Tyler Bozak scored twice, Alex Pietrangelo had a goal and assist and Justin Faulk also scored for the Blues (25-8-6). Jaden Schwartz contributed three assists and Brayden Schenn added a pair. Jordan Binnington stopped 25 shots for St. Louis.

Kyle Connor scored twice and Gabriel Bourque and Blake Wheeler added goals for the Jets (21-14-3). Patrik Laine collected a pair of assists. Connor Hellebuyck made 30 saves for Winnipeg, which has lost four of five (1-3-1).

WILD 6, AVALANCHE 4

DENVER (AP) - Mats Zuccarello and Victor Rask scored in a 1:17 span in the third period and Minnesota rallied Colorado.

Devan Dubnyk made 14 of his 40 saves in the third period for the Wild, who have taken two of the three games against Colorado.

Eric Staal, Carson Soucy, Ryan Suter and Brad Hunt also scored for Minnesota.

Matt Calvert had two goals, and Nathan MacKinnon and Gabriel Landeskog also scored for Colorado. Pavel Francouz had 27 saves for the Avalanche, who have lost their last three home games despite holding a third-period lead in each.

PENGUINS 5, PREDATORS 2

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Alex Galchenyuk scored his third goal of the season, Tristan Jarry made 30 saves and Pittsburgh beat banged up Nashville.

Dominik Simon, Teddy Blueger, Bryan Rust and Juuso Riikola also scored for the Penguins, who have won five of six.

Nashville goalie Pekka Rinne was pulled after allowing three goals on six shots. Juuse Saros stopped 17 of 19 shots in relief.

Craig Smith and Viktor Arvidsson scored for the Predators, who ended a five-game points streak.

BLACKHAWKS 5, ISLANDERS 2

CHICAGO (AP) - Robin Lehner made 38 saves against his former team, Dennis Gilbert scored his first career goal and Chicago beat the Islanders.

Jonathan Toews, Alex DeBrincat and Dominik Kubalik also scored for banged-up Chicago.

Matthew Highmore was credited with his first goal of the season when his third-period centering pass went off Islanders defenseman Ryan Pulock and into the net.

New York lost for the fourth time in five games in the opener of a three-game trip.

Ross Johnston and Casey Cizikas scored for the Islanders, and Thomas Greiss made eight saves on 11 shots before he was replaced by Semyon Varlamov in the first.

FLAMES 5, OILERS 1

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) - Andrew Mangiapane had a goal and two assists and Calgary beat Edmonton.

Matthew Tkachuk, Sean Monahan, Elias Lindholm and Mikael Backlund also scored for the Flames (20-15-5), who had lost four of five.

Connor McDavid scored for the Oilers (20-17-4), who have lost eight of 10.

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - Martin Frk scored two third-period goals in his debut with the Kings, and Jeff Carter scored the winner in overtime.

Frk scored his first goal early in the third and cut a two-goal Sharks lead in half. He tied it with another score with 1:24 left in regulation.

Jack Campbell had 22 saves as the Kings snapped a three-game skid.

Joe Thornton snapped a 47-game goal-scoring drought and added an assist for the Sharks, who lost their fourth straight and are 1-9-1 over their last 11.

Thornton hadn't scored in a regular-season game since March 18 of last season.

Aaron Dell turned back 33 shots for San Jose, which also got a goal from Erik Karlsson.

13) Pitt 34, Eastern Michigan 30? OK, never saw this before; Panthers score with 0:47 left to take a 34-30 lead, their first lead of the night. EMU was trying to drive for a winning score when their QB gets hit while throwing an incomplete pass with 0:10 left.

The QB gets up, one of the defenders says something to him, and the QB smacks the guy in the facemask? not good. He gets thrown out of the game; a kid playing his last college game, who threw for 311 yards and two TD?s, gets tossed before the last play. Oy.

12) Found a treasure trove of old knowledge Thursday, a website full of old stats from the USFL, which played from 1983-85. Was a very good league, good springtime entertainment.

22 different cities hosted USFL teams; Breakers played in a different city every year (Boston, New Orleans, Portland).

11) Steve Young led the LA Express to a 10-8 record in 1984, playing for coach John Hadl, who was an excellent QB himself in the old AFL for the Chargers, and then briefly for the Rams.

Young threw for 2,361 yards, ran for 515 more; they slipped to 3-15 the next year, losing a great 34-33 game to Jim Kelly and the Houston Gamblers early in the season, in front of a small gathering at the LA Coliseum.

GETTING HOT IN THE IGLOO

On Saturday, two of the hottest teams before the break will square off in Pittsburgh as the Penguins host the Predators. The Pens have dominated their Western Conference opponents this year to the tune of 14-4-1 and have won seven of their last eight at home.

Goalie Tristan Jarry may be the best goalie in hockey this year as his 1.86 goals against average is tops in the league. That number gets even smaller when Jarry suits up at home as the netminder owns a 1.46 GAA at home this year across 10 games. We are taking the Pens ML on Saturday as the Predators recent success may give us a better number.


LIGHTNING LAMP-LIGHTERS

Sunday, the league?s best Over team at home (14-4-1 O/U) will take on the Detroit Red Wings who have allowed 30 goals in their last seven road games. The Tampa Bay Lightning hit the Over in four of their last five games before the holidays as the team sits third in goals per game.

The Lightning?s offense has run through its power play which is converting at 32.5 percent (1st) since November and is second in the league in expected goals for. The only problem in playing the Over is trusting the Wings? offense as it sits near the bottom of the league in every offensive category. The safer bet is with the Tampa team total Over 3.5 as the Wings have allowed four or more goals in four straight and six of their last seven road games.

If there is any value in the Puck Line, don?t hesitate to take it, but we think it will be as low as it ever goes with this mismatch of talent, especially with Detroit playing the backend of a back-to-back.


GOALIE PROFILE: BEN BISHOP, DALLAS STARS

Ben Bishop went into the break having given up 10 goals in Dallas? final two games. The usually steady goaltender has dropped four straight starts and should face the Avalanche on Saturday.

Colorado will be on a back-to-back which should help the struggling veteran who is 1-0 versus the Avs this year having made 36 of 37 saves in a 4-1 win on November 5. Bishop still owns a 1.90 goals against at home this year and we think the goalie is worth trusting in a good spot for a Dallas Stars Money Line play.
