Wednesday’s 6-pack
NBA franchises that are worth the most $$$
$7.56B— Golden State
$6.58B— New York
$6.44B— LA Lakers
$4.09B— Chicago
$3.92B— Boston
$3.86B— Brooklyn

Quote of the Day
“I am heartbroken on the passing of Coach Leach. In 1999, he gave a kid out of Snow College in Utah a shot at major college football. He saw something in me when no one else did. Like so many across our sport, I am grateful for Coach Leach’s impact on my life both personally and professionally. His offensive philosophy and vision were ahead of his time, and they continue to shape the game today.”
Tennessee football coach Jeff Heupel

Wednesday’s quiz
Arizona Cardinals’ QB Kyler Murray was also a first round draft pick of which major league baseball team?

Tuesday’s quiz
Mark Sanchez was the New Jersey Jets’ QB, last time they made the playoffs, in 2010.

Monday’s quiz
Stan Humphries was the Chargers’ quarterback, in their one/only Super Bowl appearance.

***********************************

Wednesday’s Den: Mid-week musings…….

— If you’re a D-I college basketball coach, do you recruit Bronny James?

Lebron’s son is a 6-3 guard who can shoot it; he is unselfish, a good passer, but he’s not his dad, and it appears likely that he’ll only be in college for one year, so it is worth the effort?

Bronny’s high school team was on ESPN2 Monday night against Christ the King; who pays the tab for a high school team from New York City to visit Los Angeles for a game?

So Bronny’s college team will get extra TV games next year, but the top college teams don’t need any more TV exposure. If they did, the kid would’ve already signed with Duke or Kentucky.

He could also go play in the G-League, but the family obviously doesn’t need $$$, so that would seem less likely. You wonder if Bronny’s college team will have reality show about them, which can be pretty good exposure.

— Kyler Murray tore his ACL Monday night, is out for the rest of the year and part of next year. Brutal loss for the Cardinals, who have now lost 12 of their last 13 home games SU.

Bad loss for HBO too; they’re doing a Hard Knocks in-season series on the Cardinals; has to be a lot harder to do when the team’s season is going in the ashcan, like Arizona’s is.

— Since Dan Campbell has coached the Detroit Lions, Lions are 7-2 ATS in games where the spread was 3 or fewer points.

— Creighton Bluejays started their basketball season 6-0, but now they’ve lost five games in a row, with four of the five losses by 5 or fewer points. Only one of the five losses was at home; they open Big East play Friday at Marquette.

Iona 70, Princeton 64
This was a fun game to watch; Rick Pitino’s Gaels are 7-2 now. Iona visits 10-0 New Mexico Saturday in Albuquerque; Richard Pitino’s Lobos hosting his dad’s Gaels, with Iona on their way to Hawai’i for a tournament next week.

— Purdue named 36-year old Ryan Walters their new football coach; Walters is the 4th-youngest coach in I-A football. He comes from a defensive background (was DC at Illinois).

Purdue is 17-9 the last two years, so it isn’t a rebuilding situation.

— Dallas Cowboys didn’t sign Odell Beckham; they signed TY Hilton instead. The former Colts’ WR played 10 years in Indianapolis, but hasn’t played yet this year. He caught 53 TD passes in his decade with the Colts.

— RIP Mike Leach; the Mississippi State football coach passed away Monday night at age 61, after suffering a major heart attack.

Leach won coaching at Washington State, Texas Tech, Mississippi State, in smaller towns but in major conferences. He was unique; a total character who beat to his own drummer— his teams were so much fun to watch.

There was a TV interview where Leach went for five minutes about which Halloween candies he liked/disliked. He was a breath of fresh air in a business that often takes itself too seriously.

RIP coach. You will be missed.

— Joel Payamps is a pitcher who was traded to Milwaukee this week as part of the Sean Murphy 3-team trade. Since November 2020, Payamps has now changed teams seven times:

11/25/20—- Red Sox claimed him off waivers from Arizona
12/10/21— Toronto claimed him off waivers from Boston
12/22/21— Red Sox claimed him off waivers from Toronto
3/6/21— Toronto claimed him off waivers from Boston
7/21/21— Royals bought his contract from Toronto.
8/20/22— A’s claimed him off waivers from Kansas City.
12/12/22— A’s traded him to Milwaukee, in a 3-way deal.

He must be very good at packing.

— Baseball happenings:
San Francisco gave P Ross Stripling a 2-year, $25M deal.
Giants also gave SS Carlos Correa a 13-year, $350M deal
Pittsburgh gave P Vince Velasquez a 1-year, $3.15M deal.
Cleveland gave C Mike Zunino a 1-year, $6M deal.

— If the NFL playoffs started today (they don’t):
AFC: Bills, Chiefs, Ravens, Titans
Wild Cards: Bengals, Dolphins, Patriots

NFC: Eagles, Vikings, 49ers, Buccaneers
Wild Cards: Cowboys, Commanders, Giants

Alabama 91, Memphis 88
Tigers were 1-12 on the arc; only make was with 0:00.6 left in game.
Alabama was 29-40 on foul line, Memphis 19-25.

Thursday’s 6-pack
NBA franchises that are worth the least $$$
$1.63B— New Orleans
$1.67B— Memphis
$1.7B— Minnesota
$1.75B— Oklahoma City
$1.77B— Charlotte
$1.82B— Detroit

Quote of the Day
“There’s no such thing as a sure thing, thats why they call it gambling.”
Oscar Madison, The Odd Couple

Thursday’s quiz
In the movie Draft Day, what veteran actor makes a brief appearance, playing the football coach at Wisconsin?

Wednesday’s quiz
Arizona Cardinals’ QB Kyler Murray was also a first round draft pick of the Oakland A’s, unfortunately.

Tuesday’s quiz
Mark Sanchez was the New Jersey Jets’ QB, last time they made the playoffs, in 2010.

******************************

Thursday’s Den: Doing some thinking out loud…….

— New England Patriots are 7-6; right now they’d be the #7-seed in the playoffs, the last team in on the AFC side. So far this season, here are the QB’s they’ve beaten/lost to:

Wins:
Zach Wilson (twice; he’s a backup now)
Mitch Trubisky (backup)
Jacoby Brissett (backup)
Sam Ehlinger (backup)
Colt McCoy (backup, after Kyler Murray tore his ACL)
Jared Goff (an actual good QB)

Losses:
Josh Allen
Tua Tagovailoa
Lamar Jackson
Aaron Rodgers
Justin Fields
Kirk Cousins

4 games left:
Derek Carr
Joe Burrow
Tua Tagovailoa
Josh Allen

You make the call; no more stiff quarterbacks on the horizon.

— If you like the NFL, HBO’s Hard Knocks is must-watch; it gives us an inside look at teams and how they react to winning/losing. The in-season team this year is Arizona, whose season is going in the ashcan, on several fronts.

Cardinals are 4-9; the Super Bowl is in their stadium this season.
QB Kyler Murray tore his ACL Monday
GM Steve Keim is taking a medical leave from the team.
One of coach Kliff Kingsbury’s mentors was the late Mike Leach, who passed away Monday.

HBO does a superior job of getting us to know these players/coaches better. I’m curious if teams like being in that spotlight. Has to be difficult sometimes.

— So far this NBA season, there have been seven times when a team played in Los Angeles on consecutive nights, once against the Clippers, once against the Lakers

First night: visiting team is 3-4 SU/4-3 ATS. All seven games stayed under the total.
2nd night: visiting team is 2-5 SU/1-5-1 ATS. Six of seven games went over the total.

— There is baseball stuff going on this month, as teams re-tool for next year, but as an Oakland A’s fan, not lot of that stuff involves the A’s. I’m used to it.

A’s are owned by a cheap bastard; they just take marginal players and prospects and do their best to put a team together. When it comes time for the young players to get paid, they wind up elsewhere (Manaea/Bassitt got big contracts elsewhere last week).

Luckily, fantasy baseball is a big thing, it makes the season fun, because my team actually tries to win. We don’t always win, but I freakin’ try, and I accept the results.

Handicapping baseball is also great fun, but being a fan isn’t fun if your team doesn’t try to compete to at least try to make the playoffs.

Baseball has a problem; don’t think they care, but when the hedge fund guy who owns the Mets tries to buy every free agent in sight, while the A’s/Pirates wallow in muck, it isn’t fun for the people who root for the A’s/Pirates. Simple as that.

— LA Dodgers gave P Noah Syndergaard a one-year, $13M contract for 2023. He was 10-10, 3.94 in 24 starts for Angels/Phillies last year.

— I’m still shaking my head that Carlos Correa got a 13-year, $350M contract with the Giants; I’m just hoping that I’m still alive when that contract runs out.

Having the DH in the National League now makes these contracts more feasible; Correa will almost certainly wind up as the Giants’ DH 8-9 years from now. If the NL didn’t have a DH, it would be impossible to give out a contract that long.

— Watching NBA games, the fans are so close to the action, it is remarkable that there aren’t more incidents during games. In lot of arenas, the coach is standing two feet in front of fans as he paces the sidelines. Think about where Jack Nicholson used to sit at Laker games.

As a fan, wouldn’t want to be that close to the action; these are very large men, if they go for a loose ball near the sidelines where I’m sitting, it could be painful.

Several years ago, when Lebron James was on the Cavaliers, he tried to save a ball and crashed into the wife of golfer Jason Day on the sidelines. Jason Day made zero effort to protect his wife; if Day got run over by Lebron and gets hurt, he couldn’t play golf he and his wife could lose a whole boatload of money.

The moral of the story: always protect the money.

— Gonzaga is 2-2 ATS this season as a home favorite; Saint Mary’s is 3-2. Rest of the WCC is 9-22 ATS as a home favorite. Gonzaga is a big fish in a very shallow pond, which is a good thing for them; being associated with Gonzaga is good for Saint Mary’s too, gets them on TV a lot more than they would otherwise.

2022 Gonzaga is very similar to what UNLV was in the late 80’s, when the Rebels crushed the Big West every year, then made noise nationally too.

UNLV got their national title in 1990; the other good teams in the Big West back then, New Mexico State, Santa Barbara, Fullerton, they fell off the face of the earth once UNLV bolted to the Mountain West. No more TV exposure; TV exposure is a good thing.

— There is a D-2 college football team, the Ferris State Bulldogs, who play for the D-2 national title Saturday. Ferris State is located in Michigan; they’ve got a good team, but they missed the boat with their nickname.

How can they not be called the Ferris Wheels? They’d have awesome football helmets.

Wake Forest 67, Appalachian State 66:
Wake hit a mid-range jumper at the buzzer for the win, off a side out-of-bounds play.
App State led by 6 at the half; Wake led by 9 with 14:02 left in game.

Wake is now 22-0 all-time vs App State, but ASU should make some noise in the Sun Belt this winter. Seven of their nine D-I games have been decided by 5 or fewer points.

UCLA 87, Maryland 60— Terps came into this game 8-2, but got bamboozled by UCLA, which is 9-2. Game was never close; Bruins were +12 in turnovers; they led 49-20 at halftime.

Louisville 94, Western Kentucky 83— Cardinals get their first win of the year; they made 13-25 shots on the arc (they’re still only 31.8% on arc for the year).

— Recruiting services rate college recruits, with 5-star guys the best prospects. Here are the number of 4-star and 5-star recruits on certain college football teams this year:

75—Alabama
68— Georgia
59— Texas
44— Michigan
26— Tennessee
3— Kansas State

Some teams recruit talent; other teams have to develop talent. Kansas State is 9-3, with only three players who were a 4 or 5-star recruit. Pretty impressive coaching.
