Monday’s 6-pack
College basketball teams with best 2-point shooting %age:
61%— Marquette
59.3%— Indiana State
58.9%— Furman
58.5%— Cornell
57.9%— Southern Illinois
57.9%— Missouri

Quote of the Day
“That puts a lot of pressure (on us). But it’s not just the Padres, it’s the Mets, it’s the Phillies. This has been an interesting year. What the Padres are doing, I don’t 100% agree with, though I know that our fans probably agree with it. We’ll see how it works out.”
Colorado Rockies’ owner Dick Monfort, criticizing other teams’ spending $$$ on players

Monday’s quiz
First time the Minnesota Vikings played in a Super Bowl, who was their QB?

Sunday’s quiz
First time the Philadelphia Eagles played in a Super Bowl, Ron Jaworski was their QB.

Saturday’s quiz
When ESPN’s Dick Vitale coached college basketball, he coached at Detroit Mercy.

Monday’s Den: Clearing out a cluttered mind……..

— I’ve said this many times here the last few years, but it bears repeating:

NFL teams need to have THREE quarterbacks active for EVERY game, to protect the quality of the league’s product. Quality of the product is kind of an important thing.

San Francisco had two QB’s injured Sunday; they had zero chance once that happened— they put the first QB back in, even though he couldn’t throw a football more than 5-10 yards. This was the worst NFL game I’ve seen in a long time, and I watch a lot of games.

NFL franchises are worth $4B or so; they can afford an extra $500,000 a year to pay a #3 QB who can try to save their butts in games like this one. It is worth the additional expense- think about how much the TV ratings must have gone down in the second half of this game.

Eagles 31, 49ers 7
Total yardage was 269-164, Eagles; San Francisco completed only 11 passes the whole game.
49ers’ only touchdown drive was 46 yards.
San Francisco was an underdog twice this year; they lost those games 44-23/31-7.
I’m a Rams’ fan; this result is fine with me, but the game wasn’t fun to watch.

— San Francisco’s last five playoff appearances:
2012: W-W-L34-31 in Super Bowl
2013: W-W-L23-17 in NFC title game at Seattle
2019: W-W-L31-20 in Super Bowl
2021: W-W-L20-17 in NFC title game at LA Rams
2022: W-W-L31-7 in NFC title game at Philadelphia

Chiefs 23, Bengals 20
Butker kicked a 45-field goal with 0:03 left for the win.
Late hit on Mahomes out of bounds on previous play set up the winning FG.
Mahomes threw for 326 yards and two TD’s- he was the 10th pick of the 2017 Draft.
Bears took Mitch Trubisky with the 2nd pick in that draft, which explains a lot.

Chiefs’ first three drives: 27 plays, 175 yards, 13 points.
Chiefs rest of the game: 39 plays, 182 yards, 10 points.
Bengals had nine penalties for 71 yards, Chiefs 4 for 55 yards.
Kansas City is now 3-2 in AFC title games the last five years.

— Super Bowl losers who get to the conference title game the next season are now 8-6.

— This is the first time in five years that two #1-seeds are playing in a Super Bowl; last five times two number 1 seeds met in the Super Bowl, the underdog won four times.

— Opening Line on the Super Bowl: Chiefs opened at -1.5, with a total of 49.5, but soon after that money moved the line to Eagles -2.5.

— Was thinking about this tonight, I’m going to do it next year (2024) because I already have my vacations planned for this year: I want to be in Las Vegas the week the NFL schedule comes out, so I can sit in a sportsbook and watch people bet into the first odds that are posted after the schedule comes out. Just think it would be aa fun thing to do.

— Dallas Cowboys told offensive coordinator Kellen Moore to take a hike Sunday; there have to be scapegoats when teams lose playoff games.

Dallas had a top-five scoring offense this season.
Cowboys averaged 27.5 ppg this year, 4th-most in NFL.
Dallas averaged 27.7 ppg in Moore’s four years as OC, #2 in the NFL.

But by all means, fire the offensive coordinator. Head coach Mike McCarthy will now call plays, which should be interesting.

— Miami Dolphins are going to hire former Broncos’ coach Vic Fangio as their new defensive coordinator. Miami will be the fifth defense Fangio has coordinated. He is very good at it.

— LA Rams hired former Jets’ offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur as their new OC; LaFleur spent the last two years with the Jets, after spending four years with the 49ers.

— Atlanta Falcons hired Ryan Nielsen as their new defensive coordinator, replacing Dean Pees, who retired. Nielsen spent the last six years with New Orleans, the Falcons’ arch-rival.

— Random trivia: Eagles’ coach Nick Sirianni and NFL commish Roger Goodell both grew up in Jamestown, NY.

— Mets signed 2B/OF Jeff McNeil to a 4-year, $50M contract; McNeil hit .326 this past season. He is a .307 career hitter with a .370 career on-base %age.

— Phillies signed 2B Josh Harrison to a one-year, $2M contract.

— TCU’s best basketball player, Mike Miles, hurt his knee in Saturday’s loss at Mississippi State; the Frogs got a promising injury update after Miles had an MRI- the injury is not season-ending. Miles is averaging 18.1 ppg this season.

— Temple Owls are 8-2 in the AAC, after a 6-7 pre-conference mark; Temple has the best eFG% defense in AAC games- they won at Houston, an impressive win. Their rematch with Houston is Sunday in Philadelphia.

Providence 70, Villanova 65— Villanova is 3-6 in its last nine games; they’re 4-9 in games decided by 8 or less points.

Purdue 77, Michigan State 61— Boilermakers are 21-1; they’re looking like a #1-seed in the NCAA Tournament. TV guys are praising coach Matt Painter left-and-right; one guy actually mentioned that he is a future Hall of Famer. Seth Greenberg said he is one of the five best coaches in America. Yikes.

Painter is a good coach, but he ain’t one of the five best coaches in America.

— Painter has made 15 of last 18 NCAA Tournaments, counting this year. That is very good.
— He is 10-4 SU/ATS in first round games. Pretty good, not great.
— He is 6-4/7-3 ATS in second round games. That approaches very good.
— 17-7 against the spread in first weekend games is impressive.

But then…….

— His record in Sweet 16 games: 1-5 SU, with the only win in overtime in 2019.
— His Sweet 16 losses came as a 2-seed, 3-seed, 4-seed (twice) and a 5-seed.
— Purdue lost a Sweet 16 game last year as a 13-point favorite against Saint Peter’s. He lost a second round game as a 9-point favorite to VCU in 2011.
— He lost his only Elite 8 game to Virginia in overtime in 2019.

In short, Painter’s career record in 2nd-weekend NCAA games is 1-6 SU/ATS, not exactly the stuff of Hall of Famers.

He has a solid chance to get to the Final Four this year, with a 7-4 center who is really good. Will be interesting to see if the Boilermakers can live up to expectations.

— Charles Barkley was at the Auburn-West Virginia basketball game Saturday; he did a brief stint on ESPN, where he uttered the phrase, “stupid-ass transfer portal” As usual, Charles spoke the truth.

$41.9M— Roulette
$41.3M— Craps

Quote of the Day
“I gave that [acceptance] speech every day in my car for the Arizona State job for 13 years to and from the office. I’d be pulling up to a light talking to myself. People would be looking at me. They’d think I was crazy.”
Arizona State’s new football coach, Ken Dillingham

Wednesday’s quiz
When was the last time the NFL MVP also won the Super Bowl that season?

Tuesday’s quiz
Mick Cronin was UCLA’s basketball coach the last time the Bruins made the Final Four; they made it two years ago.

Monday’s quiz
First time Minnesota Vikings played in a Super Bowl, Joe Kapp was their QB, in Super Bowl IV

Wednesday’s Den: Mid-week musings……..

— Our daily update on college basketball referee John Higgins’ schedule:
January 24— Penn State @ Rutgers
January 25— Utah State @ San Diego State— Long plane ride for a back/back
January 26— Utah @ Oregon State
January 28— California @ Stanford
January 29— Michigan State @ Purdue— Day game after long plane ride.
January 30— Baylor @ Texas
January 31— Kansas State @ Kansas- Seven games in eight nights, that’s a lot of running.

— Denver Broncos sent their 1st round pick in April’s draft, plus a 2nd-round pick in 2024 to New Orleans, for coach Sean Payton and a 3rd-round pick in 2024.

Payton had a 152-89 record coaching the Saints, 9-8 in playoff games, winning the Super Bowl after the 2009 season. Now he gets to coach Russell Wilson, which should be interesting.

— Tuesday morning, Denver was 40-1 to win next year’s Super Bowl; now they’re 28-1.

— Houston Texans hired 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans as their new head coach; he’ll be the Texans’ 4th head coach in four years, which helps explain why he got a 6-year contract.

Last three years, Texans are 11-38-1; the Deshaun Watson debacle made things worse. They probably shouldn’t have fired Bill O’Brien, who was 54-52 coaching Houston, making playoffs four times in seven seasons.

— Tennessee Titans used 91 players in 2021, have had injury issues at home, so they’re changing their home field from natural grass to an artificial surface that they’ve tried out at their practice facility. Tennessee players endorsed the artificial surface, so the change is being made.

— Buffalo QB Josh Allen cited an elbow injury for pulling out of the Pro Bowl Games this week in Las Vegas; he’ll be playing in the Pebble Beach pro-am golf tournament instead.

— Underdogs are 7-4 against spread in the last eleven Super Bowls.

— I’ve had YouTube TV for 2-3 weeks now; here is some news.

Good news first: If you’re watching a TV show/movie, then turn the TV off to go out or whatever you do, when you turn the TV back on, you can resume watching that show. Thats a good thing.

Not-so-good— Apparently YouTube TV and MLB Network are at war, so that station is off my TV for the indefinite future. March is the only month where MLB Network is important; they show a ton of spring training games, plus the World Baseball Classic, but I’ll be in Las Vegas for a good chunk of March, so its not that big a deal.

More good news— Apparently the YES Network is going to be available on YouTube TV, so if you like the Bronx baseball team, their games will be available. I had been told that the YES Network wasn’t available on YouTube, so that is a good change.

— Former Braves’ TV guy Chip Caray is taking over as the television play-by-play voice of the St. Louis Cardinals, the team his grandfather Harry Caray worked for 50 years ago.

Chip Caray worked for the Braves for the past 20 years; he’s made himself into a much better announcer than he used to be. Pretty good upgrade for the Cardinals.

— January 31 is a pretty strong day for baseball birthdays: Ernie Banks, Nolan Ryan and Jackie Robinson.

— Tampa Bay Rays signed 3B Yandy Diaz to a 3-year, $24M deal. Diaz hit .296 with an .824 OPS last year, scoring 71 runs while knocking in 57.

— Georgetown Hoyas have lost 29 of their last 30 Big East games, but they have beaten the spread in their last four games, so at least they’re competing.

— I’ve thought about this a lot recently; think I’d be in favor of legalizing offensive goaltending in college basketball. Would just make the game easier to officiate.

TCU 76, West Virginia 72— Mountaineers are 7-22 in their last 29 Big X games; they’re shooting 29.3% on arc in conference games this season.

Kansas 90, Kansas State 78— Wildcats shot 34% inside arc, made 31-36 on foul line. Kansas made 11-27 on arc, 25-35 on foul line, as they avenged an earlier loss to K-State.

Akron 81, Buffalo 64— Zips made 12-18 on arc; they’ve won seven games in a row, and are tied for first place in the MAC with………

Toledo 81, Miami OH 78—……….the Rockets, who were bailed out of a tough road game by RayJ Dennis, who scored 29 points, with six assists.

Nevada 75, San Diego State 66— Wolf Pack shot 60.6% inside arc, turned ball over only six times; they’re 35-28 in Mountain West games in Steve Alford’s four years in Reno, but they haven’t gotten to the NCAA’s in his time there (they would have in 2020, had the tournament been played).

Loss drop San Diego State into a tie for first place with Boise State.

BUFFALO is 5-25 ATS (-22.5 Units) in home games revenging a loss vs opponent as a road favorite in the last 3 seasons.

TORONTO is 54-35 Over (15.5 Units) after covering 5 or 6 of their last 7 against the spread in the last 3 seasons.

86.3— Gonzaga
85.7— Southern Utah
85.3— Oral Roberts
85.0— Toledo
84.9— Cornell
83.7— Youngstown State

Quote of the Day
“Bobby was one of the best judges of football talent in NFL history. For most, that alone would be enough. For Bobby Beathard, it doesn’t nearly do the man justice. Bobby was who we all aspire to be — a friendly, caring, giving, thoughtful human being who brought people from all walks of life together….…”
LA Chargers owner Dean Spanos

Thursday’s quiz
If you’re watching a college basketball game in Mackey Arena, who is the home team?

Wednesday’s quiz
1999 was the last time the NFL MVP also won the Super Bowl that season, when Hall of Famer Kurt Warner led the Rams to their first Super Bowl title.

Tuesday’s quiz
Mick Cronin was UCLA’s basketball coach the last time the Bruins made the Final Four; they made it two years ago.

Thursday’s Den: Doing some thinking out loud………

— Our daily update on college basketball referee John Higgins:
January 24— Penn State @ Rutgers
January 25— Utah State @ San Diego State— Long plane ride for a back/back
January 26— Utah @ Oregon State
January 28— California @ Stanford
January 29— Michigan State @ Purdue— Day game after long plane ride.
January 30— Baylor @ Texas
January 31— Kansas State @ Kansas
February 1— Northern Iowa @ Drake- A double overtime game!!! Eight games in nine nights, and a double overtime game on the 9th night.

— In the NCAA Tournament, officials get $2,500 for first and second-round games, $3,000 for regionals and $3,500 for the Final Four. NCAA picks up their expenses during March Madness.

— Wednesday’s Wizards-Pistons game was postponed because cruddy weather in Dallas kept the Pistons in Texas, instead of going home.

Kentucky Wildcats won in Oxford Tuesday; they stayed there overnight because of an ice storm in Mississippi.

— Arena Football League announced plans to re-boot in 2024, with a 16-team league playing a 10-game schedule.

— Seattle Mariners signed utility man Dylan Moore to a 3-year deal worth $8.875M. He’s played seven different positions in his time with Seattle.

Florida 67, Tennessee 54— Vols shot 27.9%; they scored average of 61.5 ppg in their four losses. Tennessee led 44-38 with 10:40 left, but they folded down the stretch. Alabama now has a 2-game lead in the SEC.

Xavier 85, Providence 83 OT— Xavier blew a 14-point lead, survived 13-23 shooting on foul line to remain tied with Marquette atop the Big East.

Drake 88, Northern Iowa 81 2OT— Drake was down 11 with 11:53 left in regulation; they rally to win, are now in a 4-way tie for first stop the Missouri Valley Conference.

Top eight teams in MVC are all either 9-4 or 8-5; should be quite a conference tournament.

Murray State 83, Belmont 82— Racers outscored Belmont 14-9 over the final 5:52 to avenge an earlier loss; Belmont loses despite making 13-27 shots on the arc.Ben Sheppard scored 35 points in 35:00 in a losing cause.

Oklahoma State 71, Oklahoma 61— Sooners lost their last four Big X games, but mixed in there they pounded on Alabama, 93-69, which makes no sense.

Pitt 65, North Carolina 64— Panthers have won five of their last six games; they’ve now won their last three visits to Chapel Hill.

Southern Utah 72, Cal Baptist 71— All five starters scored in double figures for SUU, which has now won six of its last seven games and is tied for first place in the WAC with Utah Valley.

Purdue 80, Penn State 60— Mason Gillis came off the bench, scored 29 points in 25:00 on 9-12 shooting on the arc; the kid had scored a total of 18 points in his previous five games. He was 17-53 on the arc coming into the game, then went 9-12 in this game. Go figure.

— Eight NFL teams with unsettled QB situations for 2023:
Carolina— Who will Frank Reich want at QB? Sam Darnold? Matt Corral? PJ Walker? Will they bring in a different QB?

Indianapolis— Have to hire a new coach first, but chances are the Colts will have their 7th different starting QB in seven years on Opening Day.

Las Vegas— Jarrett Stidham could easily wind up as the starter here, but Derek Carr is going to be playing elsewhere next year.

Miami— Tua Tagovailoa’s concussion issues make him a long shot to be the longterm answer under center for the Dolphins. Miami has good receivers; you’d think a free agent QB would be interested in playing here.

New Orleans— Andy Dalton will be 36 in October, Jameis Winston has started 10 games the last three years. Saints need to draft a quarterback, or trade for one.

San Francisco— Lance/Purdy are both coming off serious injuries; would figure that Lance will be the healthier of the two when training camp opens.

Tampa Bay— Blaine Gabbert tops their depth chart right now; somehow I don’t think that is how it will look when September rolls around.

Washington— Will Sam Howell take over the starting job next year, after starting in Week 18 of his rookie season? Carson Wentz could wind up on his 4th team in four years next fall.

— RIP to Bobby Beathard, the Pro Football Hall of Fame executive who helped build those great Redskins teams in the 80’s. Beathard’s teams won four Super Bowl rings; he spent 33 years in the NFL with five different teams.

Monday’s 6-pack
College basketball teams with worst roster continuity:
— St Bonaventure
— Georgetown
— New Mexico State
— LSU
— Milwaukee
— Tennessee Tech

Quote of the Day
“I didn’t know what to expect, but I think it turned out pretty well. It got very competitive at the end, and I think that’s what they wanted.”
Seahawks’ QB Geno Smith, talking about the Pro Bowl flag football game

Monday’s quiz
Chicago Bears have played in two Super Bowls; which QB started the one they lost?

Sunday’s quiz
Chicago Bears have won one Super Bowl; Jim McMahon was their quarterback that day.

Saturday’s quiz
Cal-Irvine’s college basketball team is known as the Anteaters.

******************************

Monday’s Den: Wrapping up a winter weekend……..

— Five weeks until Selection Sunday; we’re about to hear a lot more talk about bubbles and brackets and seeds. Joe Lunardi is going to be on TV most every night.

The weird thing about a team’s resume is this: Once you beat a team, you need that team to win a lot of games, which will make your resume look that much better.

On November 21, San Diego State beat Ohio State 88-77 in the Maui Classic, an impressive win for sure, but today, on February 6, the Buckeyes have lost nine of their last ten games, and that win doesn’t look as good as it did in November. Bad for the Aztecs’ seeding.

College basketball teams are fragile; most teams have very little depth. Boise State is having a good season at 18-6, but point guard Marcus Shaver missed their game with San Diego State the other night, and Boise got blasted, 72-52. Good for the Aztecs’ seeding, bad for Boise’s.

— College basketball put the 3-point shot in for the 1986-87 season; since then, there are only two college teams who have made a 3-point shot in every game: UNLV and Princeton.

UNLV’s streak almost ended in 2007; they made one 3-pointer in a game at Air Force, and that came with 1:43 left. Kid who made the 3-pointer was Kevin Kruger, who was playing for his dad Lon Kruger at the time. Kevin Kruger is now the Rebels’ head coach.

— Alabama gave basketball coach Nate Oats a six-year, $30M contract that extends through the 2028-29 season. It makes Oats the 4th-highest-paid basketball coach in the SEC and among the top 10 nationally.

— Drake Bulldogs are having a good basketball season; they’re 19-6, 10-4 in Missouri Valley- they’ve won eight of their last nine games, with three of the wins in overtime. Drake’s last two wins both came in double overtime.

MVC games are fun to watch on ESPN+; Arch Madness is going to be must-watch TV, because the MVC is a one-bid league this season.

— Andy Reid will be the 5th head coach to coach a Super Bowl against a team he used to coach. Here are the first four:
Super Bowl 3— Weeb Ewbank’s Jets beat Baltimore 16-7.
Super Bowl 33— Dan Reeves’ Falcons lost 34-19 to Denver.
Super Bowl 37— Jon Gruden’s Buccaneers beat Oakland 48-21.
Super Bowl 49— Pete Carroll’s Seahawks lost 28-24 to New England.

I know I’m supposed to use Roman numerals, but it is late and I like numbers better

— I didn’t watch the Pro Bowl stuff this weekend, except a few minutes last night watching flag football while I was sitting at a bar having dinner. Apparently, there was money involved in the Pro Bowl stuff.

Players on the winning side in the Pro Bowl Games got $84,000 apiece, players on the losing side got $42,000.

— Dallas Cowboys named Brian Schottenheimer their new offensive coordinator; he replaces Kellen Moore, who got fired because the Cowboys needed a scapegoat for losing to the 49ers in the playoffs. In four years with Moore as OC, Dallas scored the 2nd-most points in the NFL.

Schottenheimer has been an NFL offensive coordinator for the Rams, Seahawks, Jets; his dad Marty was an NFL head coach, going 200-126-1 coaching four teams, most notably the Browns and Chiefs.

— Denver Broncos let defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero bolt to the Carolina Panthers, where he will have the same job under new coach Frank Reich. He interviewed with the Panthers for the head coaching job last month.

Broncos also fired their strength/conditioning coach, which apparently happens a decent amount of the time when teams change head coaches, as Denver recently did.

— Alabama hired Miami Hurricanes’ defensive coordinator Kevin Steele to the same job with the Crimson Tide; this will be the third different time Steele has worked under Nick Saban at Alabama. Miami wasn’t bowl eligible last year for the first time since 2007- they fired their offensive coordinator, now they need a new DC.

— Wind chill in Boston reached minus-39 Friday, the lowest wind chill in Boston since they started keeping track, way back in 1944. It was freakin’ cold in this part of the world for 36 hours or so, but I’m happy to report that tonight, the weather is back to its normal miserable level for early February.

— Brooklyn Nets traded Kyrie Irving to Dallas Sunday night:
Nets get: Spencer Dinwiddie, Dorian Finney-Smith and three draft picks

Dallas gets: Kyrie Irving and Markeiff Morris.

Two of the three draft picks the Nets got are in 2029, which means that the Nets acquired two players who are currently in 7th grade. Seriously, they are, whoever they are.

— Our daily update on college basketball referee John Higgins:

January 24— Penn State @ Rutgers
January 25— Utah State @ San Diego State— Long plane ride for a back/back
January 26— Utah @ Oregon State
January 28— California @ Stanford
January 29— Michigan State @ Purdue— Day game after long plane ride.
January 30— Baylor @ Texas

January 31— Kansas State @ Kansas
February 1— Northern Iowa @ Drake- A double overtime game!!! Eight games in nine nights, and a double overtime game on the 9th night.
February 2— Wisconsin @ Ohio State— Ohio State coach Holtmann was ejected with 0:27 left in first half, after a charging call. Buckeyes have lost eight of their last nine games; tensions are running high.
February 4— Oklahoma @ West Virginia
February 5— Penn State @ Nebraska— He’s worked 11 games in 13 days, 66 games since November 7, which is 66 games in 92 days. Not bad for a 54-year old guy.

— LA Dodgers signed IF Miguel Rojas to a $5M deal for 2024; he will also make $5M this coming season. Dodgers have a $5M option for the 2025 season.

Rojas will turn 34 later this month; he is expected to play a utility role for the Dodgers, after playing 136 games at shortstop for the Marlins last season.

— Seattle Mariners/P Luis Castillo agreed that the pitcher won’t pitch for the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic next month, concentrating instead on getting ready for the Mariners’ season, because, you know, they’re paying him $108M over the next five years.

Castillo also pitches for my fantasy team; I’m very happy he is skipping the WBC.

— Saint Mary’s has a sophomore guard Augustas Marciulionis whose dad Sarunas played in the NBA. I’m watching their game with Gonzaga Saturday night and I felt old; Sarunas Marčiulionis was on my NBA fantasy team when he played for Golden State 30 years ago.

Kids I coached in Little League/hgh school sports have kids of their own now; time moves on, that I understand, but it seems to move a lot more quickly these days.
