Tuesday’s Den; Nobody asked me, but…….

— Greetings from America’s favorite city, Las Vegas. Flew here Monday morning; I haven’t slept much in the last 40 hours, so excuse any spelling errors here. I’m going to bed very soon.

Travel was good, fairly normal. Was raining hard in Chicago when we left there; surprised the Cubs played last night.

— One of the flight attendants told me I looked like actor Christopher Lloyd; nothing like being told you look like an 84-year old when you’re 63.

— Spent most of Monday night in the Westgate Superbook, watching baseball, NBA playoffs and the Vegas-Edmonton hockey game. Was very fun; people were into the basketball game.

— Lakers 104, Warriors 101
Lonnie Walker scored all 15 of his points in the 4th quarter.
Steph Curry scored 31 points, had 14 assists, 10 rebounds, but he was 12-30 from the floor, taking twice as many shots as any other Warrior. He was only 3-14 on the arc.
Lakers lead this series, 3-1.

— Miami 109, Knicks 101
Miami’s bench outscored New York’s subs, 33-10.
Bam Adebayo had 23 points, 13 rebounds for Miami.
Heat leads this series, 3-1

— When I was a little kid, May 8th turned out to be a big day a couple of times; couldn’t let it pass this year without mentioning it.

May 8, 1968, in their first month playing in their new home ballpark, Catfish Hunter threw a perfect game for the A’s— he even drove in three of Oakland’s four runs in that game, going 3-4 at the plate, five years before the DH happened. I was in third grade.

Then two years later, May 8, 1970, it was a Friday night- I was playing wiffle ball out in the street and my father ordered me in the house- he never did that. My friends thought I was in trouble, but I hadn’t done anything wrong.

Turns out Game 7 of the Knicks-Lakers NBA Finals series was starting; I had been rooting for the Lakers in that series, but he was giving me one last chance to join him and my sister rooting for the Knicks. I declined his offer, then watching the Knicks crush the Lakers. Took some grief that night.

— NFL is going to release its 2023 schedule Thursday night at 8:00; they’ll leak some highlights before then, but there will be a lot to go over starting Thursday night.

— Apparently last year the Washington Commanders were making inquiries as to whether QB Andrew Luck was interested in returning to the NFL. This is against the rules; Luck is still under contract to the Colts, he couldn’t just bolt to another team.

That probably helps explain why Colts’ owner Jim Irsay wasn’t too helpful with Daniel Snyder’s issues owning/selling the Washington franchise.

— Juan Soto’s on-base % the last three weeks: .414/.381/.414, pretty good, but despite being on base 12 times last week, he didn’t score any runs. San Diego’s offense, once you get past the #4 spot in the lineup, hasn’t been productive, a big part of why they’re struggling.

— Kansas State football coach Chris Kliemann is signing a 5-year, $44M contract extension; he is 30-20 in five years at K-State, 20-16 in conference games.

— Most wins by NFL teams the last four years, counting playoffs:
Chiefs 62, Bills 51, Green Bay 49

— QB Nick Foles has earned $82M+ in his 11-year NFL career; his W-L record is 33-31, but three of those wins in 2017 got the Eagles their first Super Bowl title.

— There are 10 college basketball players who played in the ACC last year, who this spring have transferred to another ACC school. There used to be a rule if you transferred within a league you had to sit out two years, not one, but that was a long time ago.

— There were 1,628 kids in the college hop transfer portal as of Sunday night; 69 of them withdrew, 701 bolted to new schools, but there are still 848 other players looking for a new home.

Wednesday’s Den: 13 of my favorite movie scenes…….

13) Jack Nicholson as Colonel Jessup on the witness stand in A Few Good Men– “You WANT me on that wall; you NEED me on that wall!!!” Great acting.

12) In Prince of Tides, when Nick Nolte’s character takes Barbra Streisand’s husband’s Stradivarius violin and dangles it over the edge of the balcony, until he apologizes to his wife for being rude. Then he tosses the million-dollar violin in the air but catches it, then walks out of the dinner party.

11) In Any Given Sunday, when QB Willie Beamen visits the coach’s house for dinner and a “talk” and coach Tony D’Amato lectures him— “You’re the goddamn quarterback!!!”

I think this scene is better than the “Game of Inches” speech that Pacino gives near the end of the movie, before the last game.

10) Rocky II wasn’t a good movie, but the last fight scene, where Rocky Balboa wins the heavyweight title for the first time, is a great fight scene, probably the best scene in all the Rocky movies.

9) In the movie Heat, there is a scene with Al Pacino (the cop) and Robert DeNiro (bank robber) where they actually talk in a diner about how someday, their situation will come to a head and either the arrest will be made, or harm will come to the cop. DeNiro and Pacino; a great scene.

8) Susan Sarandon and James Spader were in a 1990 movie called White Palace; I only saw this movie for the first time in the last couple years.

There is a scene where a lot of people were at Thanksgiving dinner and they’re talking about politics; the patriarch of the family is Steven Hill (the original DA on Law and Order).

When a younger person says something Hill’s character sees as uninformed, he snaps at her, “Would it kill you to pick up a newspaper?” Good stuff.

7) In the true story Invincible, when 30-year old bartender Vince Papale breaks the news to his best friend that he made the Philadelphia Eagles’ roster, despite never having played college football.

6) In Friday Night Lights, when the coach (Billy Bob Thornton) delivers a halftime speech when his team is getting smoked. He talks about “being perfect” and how giving your all is the most important thing of all.

Of all the sports movies I’ve seen, I think Thornton’s character in this movie is the best portrayal of a coach that I’ve seen.

5) In the original Bad News Bears, when the coach is talking to his worst player, ordering him into the championship game- the kid is too nervous to go out and play.

“Listen, Lupus, you didn’t come into this life just to sit around on a dugout bench, did ya? Now get your ass out there and do the best you can.”

4) In Roxanne, Steve Martin’s character has a very long nose, like Cyrano de Bergerac; guy in a bar insults his long nose, the whole bar shuts down, and Martin mocks the insult.

“I suppose you could do better?” and Martin proceeds to give 20 jokes (actually 26) that were all funnier than the guy’s insult.

3) In Rounders, the scene where Mike (Matt Damon) finds his law professor (Martin Landau) in a restaurant and the professor tells him how his parents disowned him because he chose to study the law instead of becoming a rabbi.

2) Oakland A’s 20-game winning streak in Moneyball; at least they showed Miguel Tejada’s walk-off homer in the 18th straight win- they gave him almost no credit in the book/movie for how good the A’s were that year— he was the best shortstop in the game that year.

1) Bob Cousy shooting free throws in an empty gym with Nick Nolte in Blue Chips. Cousy was 65 at the time, made 10 in a row while wearing a shirt and tie- they filmed the scene in one take. He made the last foul shot left-handed.

Thursday’s Den: Nobody asked me, but…….

— Three other NFL games I’m looking forward to seeing when they’re played:

Chargers made OC Joe Lombardi a scapegoat when they blew that big lead and lost a playoff game to Jacksonville; Lombardi surfaced in Denver with Sean Payton, and is now a division rival of the Chargers. Those two games this season should be interesting.

Raiders DC Patrick Graham was passed over for the Giants’ head coaching job when the Giants hired Brian Daboll last year; Daboll worked wonders with Daniel Jones, hard to argue with Big Blue’s decision to hire Daboll, but you know Graham will be fired up when the Giants visit Las Vegas this fall.

— Used to be that in the NFL, if the visiting team was in the NFC, that game would almost certainly be shown on FOX, with AFC games on CBS. This will be the first year without that arrangement, which might be why the schedule seemed to take longer to put together this year.

— I’m on the airplane flying from Chicago to Las Vegas Monday, and a flight attendant asks me if anyone had ever told me that I look like Christopher Lloyd, the actor. I laughed and said no.

Christopher Lloyd is 84; I’m a lot younger than 84. I did like him in Taxi, though.

Last year in Las Vegas, a lady stopped me in a casino and asked me for my autograph; turns out she thought I was Larry David from Curb Your Enthusiasm. I’m a lot younger than he is, too.

Oy.

— Marlins 5, Arizona 4— Miami is 19-19 this season; 12-0 in one-run games, 7-19 in all the other games.

— Texas 4, Seattle 3— Mariners’ offense is struggling; Julio Rodriguez is hitting .205- this week they dropped him from leadoff to 6th in the batting order.

— This is how much baseball has changed in the last 40 years; the late Vida Blue threw 220+ innings in nine different seasons.

Last year, Sandy Alcantara (228.2 IP) was the only major leaguer to throw more than 205 IP.

— Lebron James’ son announced that he’ll play basketball at USC in the fall; now comes word that DJ Rodman, Dennis Rodman’s son, is transferring from Washington State to USC, who figure to get a ton of TV time, at least for the one season Bronny James will be there.

— RIP to Denny Crum, the great basketball coach; he led the Cardinals to two national titles and six Final Fours.

RIP to Joe Kapp, the only QB ever to lead his team to a Rose Bowl, Grey Cup final and a Super Bowl. He also coached Cal the day they beat rival Stanford in the Stanford Band game.
