Sunday’s 6-pack
Teams who won a World Series game after trailing by 5+ runs:
1929 A’s— Game 4 against the Cubs
1956 Dodgers— Game 2 against New York (A)
1993 Blue Jays— Game 4 at Philadelphia
1996 New York (A)— Game 4 at Atlanta
2002 Angels— Game 6 vs San Francisco
2022 Phillies— Game 1 at Houston

Quote of the Day
‘The clubs like it, the players like it. And I think overall the fans like it. I think it does bring sort of a focus to the end of the baseball game in a way that has been positively received.”
MLB commissioner Rob Manfred, talking about starting extra innings with a ghost runner on 2nd base. It is unclear if that rule will remain in the books next season.

Sunday’s quiz
Kurt Warner has a son playing WR for Kansas State, another playing QB for Temple; where did Kurt Warner play his college football?

Saturday’s quiz
Fred Thompson was an actor who played a DA on Law and Order; in real life, he was also a US Senator from Tennessee.

Friday’s quiz
Tom Brady was once picked in the baseball amateur draft, as a catcher; he was taken in the 18th round of the 1995 draft by the Montreal Expos.

**************************

Sunday’s Den: Wrapping up a sports Saturday

TCU 41, West Virginia 31— TCU QB Duggan was 16-28/341 with three TD’s. Horned Frogs might be the quietest 8-0 team ever. TCU has scored 38+ points in every game this season.

— JT Daniels is the QB for West Virginia; he used to play at USC, one of three QB’s starting around the country who used to start for the Trojans.

Saturday’s report card for Trojan alumni QB’s:
JT Daniels, WVU— 23-39/271 passing, 2 TD’s, 1 INT. WVU lost 41-31
Jaxson Dart, Ole Miss— 140 yards passing, 95 rushing. Ole Miss won 31-28
Kedon Slovis, Pitt— 14-31/236 passing. Pitt lost, 42-24

Arkansas 41, Auburn 27— Auburn was 68-36 when Gus Malzahn coached them, but that wasn’t good enough, so they told him to take a hike. Now they’re 9-12 under Bryan Harsin, have lost four games in a row, giving up 42-48-41 points the last three games. No bueno.

Auburn’s QB last year was Bo Nix; he bolted to Oregon. Speaking of which……..

Oregon 42, California 24— Bo Nix was 27-35/412 passing, with three TD’s; he also ran 12 times for 59 yards, and three more TD’s. Ducks are 7-1, by the way.

— While I’m here, let me vent about DirecTV:
No Pac-12 Network
No FOX local channel this week, which means no World Series, no Giants/NFL games, no Ohio State-Penn State game.
I pay a boatload of $$$ for DirecTV, at least until this football season is over, then it is sayonara with the NFL Sunday Ticket going elsewhere (Apple TV???) next year.

Ole Miss 31, Texas A&M 28— Ole Miss faked a punt on 4th-and-5 from their own 15-yard line midway thru 2nd quarter, when they trailed 14-7.

You have to have four things if you fake a punt on your own 15-yard line:
a) a play you think will work.
b) job security, lot of job security
c) boatload of $$$ in your bank account, in case the fake doesn’t work.
d) as Bill Raftery would say, ONIONS!!!!

Upsets of the Week:
Charlotte (+15) 56, Rice 23
North Texas (+10) 40, Western Kentucky 13
UConn (+8) 13, Boston College 3
Florida International (+6) 42, Louisiana Tech 34 OT
Florida Atlantic (+4.5) 24, UAB 17

Kansas State 48, Oklahoma State 0— Cowboys came into the game 6-1, scoring 34+ points in all seven games. They were 9-4 in last 13 games vs K-State, but they got whacked here.

Total yardage was 495-217; Wildcats went for it on 4th down three times, and made the first down all three times. K-State was +3 in turnovers; this was a total beatdown.

Louisville 48, Wake Forest 21— Wake turned ball over eight times, all in the second half- they turned ball over six times in the third quarter, when Louisville scored 35 points.

Ohio State 44, Penn State 31— Buckeyes trailed 21-16 with 10:00 left in game; they scored 28 points in a 6:09 span of 4th quarter to pull away for the win. Ohio State was outgained 482-452, but Nittany Lions turned ball over four times (minus-4).

UConn 13, Boston College 3— This is a horrendous loss for BC, which is 1-6 against I-A opponents. Since 2012, Eagles are 60-72 SU in football; their basketball program hasn’t been in the NCAA Tournament since 2009, their 4th year in the ACC.

Moving from the Big East to the ACC may have made sense financially, but on the field/court, it has been a disaster. If they had turned down the ACC, they’d probably be in the Big 14 now, instead of Rutgers- at least their football profile would be better.

Fresno State 32, San Diego State 28— Aztecs led 28-10 with 1:00 left in third quarter, but Fresno scored twice in last 1:09 to pull out an unlikely home win. Both teams are now 4-4; Jake Haener completed 35-46 passes for 402 yards and three TD’s for Fresno.

— Oklahoma’s kicker scored a touchdown on a fake field goal; don’t see that a lot.

— North Carolina QB Drake Maye was 34-44/388 passing, with five TD passes in a 42-24 win over Pitt. Tar Heels outscored Pitt 21-0 in 4th quarter.

Central Florida 25, Cincinnati 21— Knights scored on a 17-yard run with 0:48 left to give UCF a win over Cincinnati, which is bolting the AAC for the Big X fairly soon.

Houston 42, South Florida 27— Houston QB Clayton Tune was 31-37/380 passing with four TD’s in Cougars’ win over USF.

Miami 14, Virginia 12 OT— Third I-A game this season with no touchdowns; Virginia has a good QB, Brennan Armstrong, but they’re 2-5 vs I-A teams and they scored 16 points in both the wins.

Iowa, by the way, played in the other two games with no TD’s this season.

— It was an upsetting day in Conference USA; all four underdogs won SU. Not often a 15-point favorite loses 56-23, but Charlotte pounded Rice, just their second win this season.

Michigan 29, Michigan State 7— Last year, Spartans gave football coach Mel Tucker a 10-year, $95M contract, in the midst of their 11-2 season. Here is Tucker’s head coaching record in college ball:
2019 Colorado 5-7, 3-6 in Pac-12
2020 Michigan State 2-5, 2-5 in Big 14
2021 Michigan State 11-2, 7-2 in Big 14
2022 Michigan State 3-5, 1-4 in Big 14

3.5 years: 21-19, 13-17 in league games. $9.5M a year. What a country.

Astros 5, Phillies 2
World Series heads to Philadelphia tied 1-1
Altuve went 3-4, Bregman hit a home run.
Valdez got 19 outs on 104 pitches.
Phillies were 0-7 with runners in scoring position.

Tuesday’s 6-pack
Chargers’ all-time leaders in passing yardage:
59,271— Philip Rivers
43,040— Dan Fouts
26,938— John Hadl
16,085— Stan Humphries
12,348— Drew Brees
11,359— Justin Herbert

Quote of the Day
“We’re just going to continue to grow. We’re going to grow together. I just told him to keep his head up, stay confident. I want to put the ball back in his hands and just show the trust that we have, that I have, in him and that the team has. He knows that we’ve got to be better in a few situations, but again, those are really good learning opportunities for Trevor (Lawrence).”
Jaguars’ coach Doug Pederson

Tuesday’s quiz
When the Cleveland Browns re-joined the NFL in 1999 after a 3-year absence, what former Kentucky QB was the Browns’ QB?

Monday’s quiz
Buffalo QB Josh Allen played his college football at Wyoming.

Sunday’s quiz
Kurt Warner has a son playing WR for Kansas State, another playing QB for Temple; Kurt Warner played his college football at Northern Iowa.

****************************

Tuesday’s Den: Nobody asked me, but……..

Browns 32, Bengals 13
— Bengals’ first seven drives: 33 plays, 116 yards, 7 first downs, no points.
— Bengals trailed 25-0, finally scored a TD, then missed the PAT.
— Browns outgained Cincinnati, 440-229.
— Browns have now won eight of last nine series games.
— Bengals miss injured WR Ja’Marr Chase, who is out 4-6 weeks (hip)

— Cleveland snaps its 4-game losing streak.
— Browns converted 8-13 third down plays.
— Cleveland averaged 10.7 yards/pass attempt.
— Browns led this game 11-0 at halftime.
— Cleveland’s first three drives in 2nd half: 27 plays, 218 yards, 21 points.

— How much does a quarterback influence the pointspread? Tennessee Titans were -3.5 in Houston last week, until it was announced that rookie QB Malik Willis would be starting in place of Ryan Tannehill. Spread moved to Houston -1, so in this situation, the QB change moved the spread 4.5 points.

Willis wound up throwing only 10 passes the whole game; he was 6-10/55 passing, ran ball five times for 12 times. He handed off 40 times, which is a good idea when Derrick Henry is on your team. Titans won 17-10.

— NFL trading deadline is 4:00 Tuesday; Chicago Bears traded LB Roquan Smith to Baltimore Monday, for 2nd/5th round draft picks. Chicago traded DE Robert Quinn to the Eagles last week, then gave up 49 points to Dallas. Sounds like they’ve given up on this season.

— There will be scapegoats: Detroit Lions have lost five games in a row- they fired their DB’s coach Aubrey Pleasant Monday. It isn’t Pleasant’s fault that in their last three games, Detroit was outscored 48-0 in second half.

— On their first drive of each game this season, Arizona Cardinals have been outscored 41-9; Cardinals haven’t scored a TD on their first drive in their last 13 games.

— Jacksonville Jaguars are 2-6 this season; all six of their losses were by 8 or less points. Their wins were 24-0 against the Colts, 38-10 at the Chargers.

QB Trevor Lawrence has thrown six interceptions this season; all six have come in the red zone or in the final 2:00 of a one-score game.

— If I ran the NFL, we would discourage officials from calling taunting penalties in the 4th quarter; you call those early in the game, to discourage taunting, but to call the first taunting penalty in the 4th quarter, after guys have been jawing at each other for 2.5 hours, it just seems kind of subjective. It is an emotional game; officials need to ignore the BS late in the game.

— Auburn fired football coach Bryan Harsin Monday; he was 9-12 at Auburn, 4-9 in SEC games, replacing Gus Malzahn after he was told to take a hike with a 67-35 record, 38-27 in SEC tilts.

Some of these college football programs are influenced by insanely impatient rich boosters; Auburn is a bad job until Nick Saban retires- Auburn will always be worse than Alabama until the 70-year old Saban goes away, and Auburn boosters don’t seem to understand that.

— Speaking of which, Auburn hired John Cohen as its new athletic director Monday; he leaves his alma mater Mississippi State to join Auburn, where he will bank $1.5M a year.

— Still in the SEC, Lane Kiffin’s Ole Miss Rebels are 8-1 this season, their best start since 1962. Rebels have this week off, host Alabama next week.

— Texas A&M is 3-5, has lost four games in a row, giving up 31.8 ppg in those losses. Read it on the Interweb somewhere this weekend that Jimbo Fisher ain’t getting fired, not now, If A&M fired Fisher now, they’d have to pay him $86M- that’s not an exaggeration. His assistants will be probably be shuffled, but Fisher isn’t going anywhere for now.

— College football games ended around 2am here in the east late Saturday night; NFL had a game from London on at 9:30am Sunday morning. Not a lot of time for sleeping.

If you enjoy college football, I highly endorse ESPN’s wrap-up show late Saturday night, with Matt Barrie, Joey Galloway and a third person, who varies from week to week.

They show ton of highlights; they’re smart, good-natured and they can be critical, if need be. Good way to wrap up the college football day.

Feel bad for people who work in Las Vegas sportsbooks; the London games start at 6:30am in Nevada— the betting windows probably open at 5:30 or so. Luckily most casinos have a Starbucks nearby.

— A sentence I never thought I would type; Arizona State beat North Dakota in hockey last week in Las Vegas, apparently a pretty big upset. Didn’t even know ASU had a hockey team.

— If you care about such things, thru Sunday’s games, NBA teams playing for a 2nd consecutive night are 12-16-1 ATS so far this season.

— Game 3 of the World Series got rained out Monday night, which probably eliminates the travel day for Thursday, should the series get to a Game 6.

— Do kids trick or treat anymore on Halloween? My doorbell rang once Monday night; two little kids, maybe 6-7 years old. Bought three damn bags of candy, gave out two candy bars. Now I have to give the candy away before I eat it all, which I don’t need to do.

Phillies lead series, 2-1.

— I called DirecTV to complain that I can’t watch the World Series; the local FOX station and DirecTV are at war over $$$$, so the FOX channel isn’t available this week. Not exactly a great business plan.

Was hoping they’d take some $$$ off my bill at least; instead, they suggested I switch my entire system from English to Spanish, then they would give me a station that shows the World Series in Spanish. When the World Series is over, they would switch me back to an English-speaking system.

No, gracias. No bueno. Once college basketball is over next spring, I’ll be taking my business elsewhere.

— Last two years, 3.616 college basketball players entered the transfer portal; lot of teams are totally rebuilding. There are 363 D-I college basketball teams; over a 2-year period, that works out to 9.96 players per team entering the transfer portal.

November-December have become a period where we have to figure out which teams have chemistry, talent. November-December used to be a time where you can earn some cabbage going with experienced teams. No such thing anymore.

— Indianapolis Colts fired offensive coordinator Marcus Brady, a week after they switched QB’s. Brady wasn’t calling plays; he was involved with game-planning and play design.

So 2nd-year QB Sam Ehlinger started his first NFL game Sunday and two days later, his OC gets fired. Perfectly normal. Colts are 3-4-1; they’ve trailed all eight games after three quarters.

— Detroit Lions traded TE TJ Hockenson to division rival Minnesota; they also gave the Vikings two 4th-round picks- they get 2nd/3rd round draft picks back in return. Hockenson has 26 receptions for 395 yards, 3 TD’s in seven games this year; it is unclear why Detroit would help out a division rival. That usually doesn’t happen.

This summer, when Detroit cut backup QB David Blough, the Vikings scooped him up.

— Denver traded LB Bradley Chubb to Miami; they get a package that includes a 1st-round pick.

— Major League Baseball’s sponsorship revenues reached roughly $1.2B this year, up 5.6% from last year. Next year, MLB will start with uniforms patches; San Diego Padres supposedly have a deal with Motorola, worth $10M a year.

— Kansas City Royals hired Tampa Bay bench coach Matt Quatraro as their new manager; Royals have had six straight losing seasons- they’re going to lean more heavily on advanced analytics going forward, which is why they hired someone with a Tampa Bay background.

Tampa Bay has had five straight winning seasons with a small budget.

— Royals bypassed their own bench coach, Pedro Grifol to become their new manager, but the White Sox are going to name Grifol their next manager. Grifol is probably going to hire former Toronto manager Charlie Montoyo as his bench coach.

— Surprising stat: When Houston’s Framber Valdez pitched 6.1 innings Saturday, it was the longest start in a World Series game in three years.

— Brooklyn Nets fired coach Steve Nash Tuesday, after their 2-5 start; the person who should be fired is the person who assembled a roster with Ben Simmons/Kyrie Irving on it. Bad chemistry.

Kevin Durant wasn’t happy playing for Golden State; Warriors seem like the one team everyone would want to play for. If you’re not happy there, when will you be happy?

I’d suggest naming Durant player/coach; it used to happen in the NBA long time ago, think Bill Russell, Dave DeBusschere, Lenny Wilkens.

— Seems like Brooklyn is interested in hiring Ime Udoka as Nash’s replacement; Udoka led the Celtics to the NBA Finals in his first year as head coach there last season, then got suspended for a year over an inappropriate relationship with a Celtics staff member.

— Dallas star Luka Doncic is first NBA player to score 30+ points in his first six games of a season, since Michael Jordan in 1986.

— Zion Williamson’s NBA career
2019-20— played in 24 of 72 games
2020-21— played in 61 of 82 games
2021-22— didn’t play in any games
2022-23— has played in 4 of 6 games
That is 89 out of 242 games he’s played in— 36.8%.

It is said that the best ability is avail-ability. Zion doesn’t have that yet; he is productive when he plays, but he doesn’t play nearly enough.

— Surprising fact; of the 32 current head coaches in the NFL, only four of them were QB’s in the NFL: O’Connell, Reich, Pederson, Kingsbury. Quarterbacks, especially star QB’s, make a ton of money. No need to work 18-hour days once your playing days are over.

Quarterbacks are way more likely to go into TV after their playing days are over. Romo, Aikman, Warner, Simms, Esiason, RGIII, Gannon, Young, Green, Alex Smith, Bradshaw are all still on TV. Good money, lot less work than coaching.

Ball State 27, Kent State 20
Cardinals drove 75 yards, scored winning TD with 3:21 left.
Kent State led 13-0 after the first quarter.
Total yards: Ball State, 450-408

Ohio U 45, Buffalo 24
Bobcats led 17-0 after the first quarter.
Ohio outgained Buffalo, 474-260.
Bulls ran ball 28 times for 22 yards.
Loss snaps Buffalo’s 5-game winning streak.
