STAMPS EDGE RIDERS TO GRAB TOP SPOT IN WEST
CFL.CA STAFF

CALGARY ? Bo Levi Mitchell threw for 298 yards and two touchdown passes to help lift the Calgary Stampeders over the Saskatchewan Roughriders with a 30-28 home win on Friday night. The Stamps improved their record to 10-5, matching the Riders in the battle to finish first in the West.

A field goal and a fumble recovery touchdown on a kickoff gave Calgary an early lead, but the Riders responded on defence later in the first quarter with a pick-six from Nick Marshall.

Saskatchewan took the lead in the second quarter after Cody Fajardo led an 84-yard touchdown drive, but the Stamps quickly regained the lead with a touchdown drive of their own that saw Bo Levi Mitchell find Hergy Mayala in the end zone. Fajardo led the Riders to a field goal just before half-time, cutting Calgary?s lead down to just two points.

The Stamps extended their lead in the third quarter with Mitchell?s second touchdown pass to Mayala, but Saskatchewan made it a one-possession game in the fourth quarter on a 42-yard field goal from Lauther.

The Riders made it a two-point game with under three minutes to play after Fajardo threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to William Powell, but Mayala helped seal the victory with a late first down gain.

The Riders got on the board first when a booming 55-yard punt from Jon Ryan went out of the end zone for a single point, but the Stamps responded on the following drive with a 47-yard field goal from Rene Paredes. Mitchell helped set up the field goal by moving the chains with three straight completions to three different receivers.

Calgary?s ensuing kickoff was fumbled on the return by Marcus Thigpen, and Jamari Gilbert recovered the ball for Calgary before returning the fumble 28 yards for a touchdown. Paredes added the extra point to give the Stamps an early nine-point lead.

But Saskatchewan stepped up on defence to cut into the lead later in the quarter, as Marshall quickly shut down a Stamps drive by picking off Mitchell and returning it all the way to the end zone for a 62-yard touchdown. Lauther added the extra point to make it a 10-8 game.

Paredes made a 45-yard field goal to extend Calgary?s lead to five points entering the second quarter.

After both defences forced punts, Fajardo proceeded to lead the Riders on their best drive of the opening half. The 27-year-old quarterback engineered a 15-play, 84-yard scoring drive that consumed nine minutes off the clock. Fajardo completed six passes on the drive to help set up a three-yard rushing touchdown from Powell that gave Saskatchewan the lead.

But the Stamps swung back and regained the lead with a scoring drive of their own. Mitchell connected with receiver Eric Rogers for a 17-yard gain before following it up two plays later with an eight-yard touchdown strike to Mayala. Paredes? extra point gave Calgary a 20-15 lead with under three minutes to go in the half.

Royce Metchie notched an interception for Calgary to put an end to the Riders? next drive, but Saskatchewan forced a punt and rallied to add a 12-yard field goal from Lauther to finish the half.

Calgary extended its lead in the third quarter with another touchdown connection between Mitchell and Mayala. Mayala hauled in the 18-yard score after Ante Milanovic-Litre brought the ball into scoring range with 25 rushing yards on a pair of carries. Paredes added the extra point to put Calgary up 27-18.

Saskatchewan pulled within a touchdown in the fourth quarter after Lauther made a 42-yard field goal, but Calgary extended the lead once again by matching the Riders with a 42-yard field goal from Paredes.

Fajardo brought the Riders closer with a 34-yard touchdown strike to Powell,

Week 19 will see the Saskatchewan Roughriders travel to take on the BC Lions next Friday at 10:00 p.m. EDT., while the Calgary Stampeders will host the Winnipeg Blue Bombers the following Saturday at 7:00 p.m. EDT.

GAME RECAP
BOMBERS TOP ALS TO KEEP PACE IN WEST
CFL.CA STAFF

WINNIPEG ? A pick six and a big rushing performance from Andrew Harris led the Winnipeg Blue Bombers to a 35-24 home win over the Montreal Alouettes on Saturday. The Bombers notched four interceptions and snapped a three game losing streak, improving their record to 10-6 to keep pace in the West.

Harris led the Bombers to a touchdown on their opening drive, and Winnipeg?s defence held the Als to a field goal on their first series. Special teams gave Montreal a major spark later in the first quarter when Mario Alford came through with a punt return touchdown for the second straight game.

Winnipeg grabbed the lead back in the second quarter on a touchdown pass from Chris Streveler to Drew Wolitarsky, and the Blue and Gold led by five points heading into half-time.

The Als retook the lead when Vernon Adams Jr. threw a 30-yard touchdown to Jake Wieneke, but three straight field goals from Justin Medlock gave Winnipeg a 24-17 lead later in the third quarter.

Winnipeg extended the lead in the fourth quarter with a huge pick six from Nick Taylor and another Medlock field goal. Marcus Sayles? second interception of the game sealed the victory for the Bombers.

Harris gained 106 rushing yards in the first half and finished with a career-high 166 yards on 24 carries, bringing his league-leading rushing total to 1,261 yards.

A slashing 14-yard run from Harris converted an early second down on the Bombers? opening drive. Streveler followed it up with another first down gain on the ground, accelerating to the left edge of the Als? defence for 11 yards. Harris then added a five-yard carry before capping off the drive with a 16-yard touchdown run to put Winnipeg on top.

Montreal responded with a solid drive that saw Adams throw 21-yard strikes to both Eugene Lewis and Quan Bray, but the Bombers? defence held strong and forced the Als to settle for a 30-yard field goal from Boris Bede.

But the Als grabbed the lead with a bang later in the opening quarter when Alford turned on the jets and returned a punt 90 yards for a touchdown. Alford zoomed up the left sideline for the score, and Bede added the extra point to put Montreal up 10-7.

Winnipeg regained the lead in the second quarter when Streveler led a 65-yard scoring drive that he finished off with a 15-yard touchdown pass to Wolitarsky. Streveler moved the chains three times on the drive with big throws to Kenny Lawler, Wolitarsky and Janarion Grant. Medlock kicked the convert to give the Bombers a 14-10 advantage.

The Bombers added another point to their lead on the following kickoff when Alford was tackled in the Als? end zone for a single.

But frustration set in for Winnipeg just before half-time, as Streveler was picked off in the red zone by defensive back Tommie Campbell. The Bombers were marching down the field and looked poised to extend their lead before the turnover.

Montreal retook the lead in the third quarter when Adams displayed his athleticism on a beautiful 30-yard touchdown throw to Wieneke. Adams scrambled to the left and froze defensive back Marcus Rios in his tracks before throwing an accurate strike to Wieneke. Bede kicked the convert to give Montreal a 17-15 lead.

The Als? lead did not last long, as Grant immediately came through with a huge 74-yard kickoff return that set up a 43-yard field goal from Medlock.

The Bombers? special teams followed up with another big play after their defence came up with a stop. Boris Bede was set to punt for the Als, but heavy pressure forced the punter to hold onto the ball and take a loss for a turnover on downs.

Harris moved the ball inside the 10-yard line with a 21-yard run on the next play, but Montreal stood tall on defence and forced Winnipeg to settle for a 14-yard field goal from Medlock.

Adams was picked off on the very first play of the next drive when his pass was tipped by Winston Rose and intercepted by Marcus Sayles. Streveler followed the turnover up one play later with a big 35-yard pass to Rasheed Bailey. Bailey beat Campbell in coverage, and the big gain set up a 42-yard field goal from Medlock that gave Winnipeg a 24-17 lead.

Winnipeg came up with a pick six on defence in the fourth quarter, as Taylor intercepted Adams after the quarterback rolled to his right and attempted to complete a pass to Bray. Taylor returned the pick 37 yards for the score, and Medlock?s extra point gave the Bombers a 31-17 lead.

Streveler was intercepted on the Bombers? next possession by linebacker Boseko Lokombo, giving Montreal solid field position and a jolt of momentum. But the Bombers? defence bailed Streveler out when Chandler Fenner picked off Adams in the end zone three plays later.

Medlock extended Winnipeg?s lead to 17 points with a 46-yard field goal, and Sayles stepped up with his second pick in the final minutes.

The Als made things interesting late with a 37-yard touchdown strike from Adams to Bray, but it was too little too late as Winnipeg took the win.

Week 19 will see the Montreal Alouettes host the Toronto Argonauts next Friday at 7:00 p.m. EDT., while the Winnipeg Blue Bombers will travel to take on the Calgary Stampeders the following Saturday at 7:00 p.m. EDT.

GAME RECAP
ESKS BEAT LIONS TO CLINCH PLAYOFF SPOT
CFL.CA STAFF

EDMONTON ? Greg Ellingson totaled 133 receiving yards to lead the Edmonton Eskimos to a 19-6 home win over the BC Lions on Saturday night. The Esks improve to an 8-8 record while securing a playoff spot.

An early field goal from Sean Whyte gave Edmonton the lead, and the Lions found themselves facing major adversity when starting quarterback Mike Reilly left the game with a suspected broken left wrist midway through the first quarter.

A rushing touchdown from running back Shaquille Cooper extended the Esks? lead in the second quarter, and Whyte?s third field goal of the game gave Edmonton a 16-3 lead heading into half-time.

The Lions clawed their way closer in the fourth quarter with a field goal from Sergio Castillo, and T.J. Lee came up with a late interception in the end zone. But a field goal from Whyte in the final minute sealed the victory for Edmonton.

Ellingson surpassed 1,000 receiving yards for the fifth straight season, and Ricky Collins Jr. achieved the same accomplishment for the first time in his CFL career.

Edmonton took an early lead on a 22-yard field goal from Whyte that was set up by a 15-yard catch from Collins. The Lions suffered a major loss later in the opening quarter when Reilly was forced to leave the game with an injury after taking a hit from defensive end Kwaku Boateng. Backup Danny O?Brien took over at quarterback for BC.

The Esks extended their lead in the second quarter on a 63-yard scoring drive that was capped off with a two-yard rushing touchdown from Cooper. Cooper carried the ball four times for 24 yards to set up his second rushing score of the season, and Whyte kicked the convert to give Edmonton a 10-point lead.

Logan Kilgore came up with a huge throw for the Esks late in the opening half while evading pressure from defensive end Odell Willis. Kilgore scrambled to the left and made a tight 14-yard throw on the run to Ellingson to convert on second down. Ellingson followed the play up with an 18-yard grab one play later, but the drive stalled and Edmonton settled for a 49-yard field goal from Whyte.

The Lions got on the board with under a minute to go in the half on a 20-yard field goal from Castillo. Lions leading receiver Bryan Burnham helped set up the kick with a 20-yard catch. But Edmonton managed to extend the lead once again just before half-time, as a big 40-yard catch from Ellingson put Whyte in position to make a 44-yard field goal as time expired.

The Esks appeared to come up with a turnover on defence in the third quarter when Forrest Hightower and Nick Usher combined on a tackle to knock the ball out of Rashaun Simonise?s hands. But upon further review, it was determined that Jevon Cottoy initially recovered the fumble for BC before being ruled down by contact.

Defence was the story for the remainder of the third quarter, and BC came up with a key goal line stand on third down to keep the Esks out of the end zone. Linebacker Kevin Haynes made the tackle on quarterback Troy Williams to force the turnover on downs.

Running back John White got the following drive going with a 25-yard rush, and a pair of short completions from O?Brien set up a 46-yard field goal from Castillo that made the score 16-6 to start the fourth quarter.

A 41-yard punt return from Christion Jones gave the Esks renewed momentum late in the game, but the Lions came up with a timely interception on defence when Lee picked off Kilgore in the end zone.

But Edmonton got the ball back just three plays later when defensive back Tyquwan Glass picked off O?Brien while the quarterback attempted to complete a pass to Duron Carter on third down. Whyte then added a 21-yard field goal to seal the victory and secure Edmonton?s spot in the playoffs.

Week 19 will see the BC Lions host the Saskatchewan Roughriders next Friday at 10:00 p.m. EDT., while the Edmonton Eskimos will get a week off before they host the Riders in Week 20.

CFL Week 19 preview, odds, picks & predictions: Don't count out Winnipeg on the road
Rohit Ponnaiya

Andrew Harris and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers are 7-point underdogs on the road against the Calgary Stampeders on Saturday night.

It's Week 19 in the CFL and there are just three weeks left in the regular season. We break down the odds (provided by 10bet.com) for all the games on this weekend's schedule, highlighted by a Saturday night clash between a pair of 10-win teams in the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Calgary Stampeders.

We've got all the betting notes, analysis and predictions you need before wagering on the CFL.

Season Betting Trends

Favorites: 51-18 SU, 31-36-2 ATS
Home teams: 43-26 SU, 35-32-2 ATS
Over/Under: 32-36-1

Week 18 Picks: 3-1
Season to date: 29-30-2

TORONTO ARGONAUTS AT MONTREAL ALOUETTES (-10.5, 53)

The Alouettes might be headed to the playoffs but they've often had to play catch up in games. We faded them in the first half last week and made some money with Montreal continuing their season-long trend of playing awful in the opening half.

Over their last nine games Montreal is 5-4 SU but has trailed at halftime in eight of those contests. They have a first-half scoring margin of minus-6.2 ppg in that span.

These teams tangled back on August 25 and Toronto had a 16-6 lead going into halftime before Montreal came from behind to win. Take Toronto to keep things relatively close early and back them on the 1H spread.

PICK: First Half Toronto +6.5

SASKATCHEWAN ROUGHRIDERS AT BC LIONS (+7, 47)

Oof, the BC Lions must know exactly how Charlie Brown felt when Lucy pulled the football away at the last second. Just when it looked like things were finally starting to go the Lions' way, they lose star quarterback Mike Reilly for the rest of the season with a broken wrist. Reilly and WR Bryan Burnham were really the only bright spots for BC and Burnham will be hard-pressed to continue his success with backup Danny O'Brien throwing the ball.

The Riders are 9-2 SU and 8-3 ATS over their last 11 games and have held opponents to just 19.9 ppg over that span. Back Saskatchewan to win and cover against a deflated Lions squad.

PICK: Saskatchewan -7

OTTAWA REDBLACKS AT HAMILTON TIGER-CATS (-17.5, 51)

This might be a matchup of the league's best team against the worst, as the 12-3 Ti-Cats face the 3-12 Redblacks. The Redblacks are just 1-12 in their last 13 games and have been getting stomped early. In their last six games they have a first-half scoring margin of minus-11.8 ppg, and have trailed by more than 10 points at halftime in four of them.

Hamilton, on the other hand, has been hammering opponents early. In their last four games the Ti-Cats have a first-half scoring margin of plus-13.5 and those contests were against strong teams like Calgary, Winnipeg and Edmonton. A 17.5-point spread is tough to swallow but taking Hamilton on the first half spread seems like a more reasonable wager.

PICK: First Half Hamilton -10

WINNIPEG BLUE BOMBERS AT CALGARY STAMPEDERS (-7, 50.5)

Winnipeg snapped a three-game losing streak with a big win against the Als last week. The Blue Bombers are 10-6 but three of those defeats were by two or fewer points. The Stamps are 10-5 but only four of those victories came by more than seven points.

Seven points is quite simply too much to spot a Bombers team that is second-best in the league in both points scored and points allowed. With Calgary just 2-6 ATS at home this season (and both of those ATS wins coming against the Eskimos), back the road 'dogs on the spread.

PICK: Winnipeg +7

GAME RECAP
ALS SURVIVE ARGOS? COMEBACK ATTEMPT TO CLAIM NINTH WIN
CFL.CA STAFF

MONTREAL ? The Montreal Alouettes scored a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns and survived a late comeback attempt to claim a 27-24 home win over the Toronto Argonauts on Friday night. The playoff-bound Als recorded their 300th win in franchise history, improving to a 9-7 record with two games remaining in the regular season.

Vernon Adams Jr. led the Als to a field goal on their opening drive and a touchdown to start the second quarter. Both teams traded field goals later in the half, giving Montreal a 13-3 lead entering the third quarter.

The Argos gained ground in the third quarter when a big catch from Chandler Worthy set up McLeod Bethel-Thompson?s first rushing touchdown of the season. Toronto grabbed the lead later in the third when Bethel-Thompson engineered an 83-yard drive that he capped off with a touchdown pass to S.J. Green.

The Als regained the lead in the fourth quarter on a quick scoring drive that saw Jeremiah Johnson reach the end zone on a 45-yard catch-and-run, and Montreal extended the lead on an 18-yard touchdown pass from Adams to Quan Bray. Bethel-Thompson drove the Argos down the field for a touchdown in the final two minutes to make it a three-point game, but the comeback attempt fell short when a 51-yard field goal attempt from Tyler Crapigna missed as time expired.

Als running back William Stanback made his return from injury and reached the 1,000 yard rushing milestone for the first time in his career. Stanback is now second in the league with 1,003 rushing yards on the season, trailing only Andrew Harris of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

Bethel-Thompson completed 78 per cent of his passes and surpassed 300 passing yards for the ninth time this season.

Adams converted on an early second down during the Als? opening drive when he displayed beautiful touch on a 44-yard pass to DeVier Posey. But the drive stalled due to an offside penalty, forcing Montreal to settle for a 36-yard field goal from Boris Bede.

Adams then led the Als to their first touchdown of the game by executing a 10-play, 92-yard drive. The Montreal quarterback moved the chains three times with his arm before finishing the drive off with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Posey. Bede added the extra point to give the Als a 10-point lead early in the second quarter.

The Argos responded by breaking the shutout on the next drive, as Crapigna nailed a 41-yard field goal to cut into the lead. Green helped set up the field goal with an eight-yard grab that extended the drive on second down.

A big 32-yard pass from Bethel-Thompson to Worthy gave Toronto a sudden momentum boost with just over a minute to go in the half, with Worthy stretching out to make the over-the-shoulder grab along the sideline. But a key sack later in the drive from defensive end Antonio Simmons pushed the Argos back and forced a field goal attempt, and the Als managed to block the 50-yard attempt from Crapigna to end the half.

Worthy came up with another highlight-reel grab in the third quarter. The Argos receiver dove out and made a spectacular 29-yard catch that set up a first-and-goal situation at the one-yard line, and Bethel-Thompson punched it in on the next play for the touchdown. Crapigna knocked the extra point through to cut Montreal?s lead down to three points.

Toronto came up with big a defensive stop, and the Argos began driving again on offence. Bethel-Thompson took advantage of a blown coverage by finding Rodney Smith down the field for a 34-yard gain, and the quarterback followed it up with a 14-yard pass to Green.

Bethel-Thompson capped the drive off with a quick five-yard touchdown strike to Green on a slant route, and Crapigna?s extra point gave the Argos a 17-13 lead with three minutes to go in the third.

Montreal pass rusher JaVon Rolland-Jones came up with a huge sack that forced a punt in the fourth quarter. The Als? offence did not waste time capitalizing on the opportunity, driving down the field to regain the lead in just two plays. Adams connected with Jake Wieneke for a 21-yard gain, and Johnson followed it up with a 45-yard catch-and-run touchdown on the next play. Bede kicked the extra point to give Montreal a three-point lead.

After coming up with another stop on defence, the Als proceeded to storm down the field with hopes of an insurance score. Adams extended the drive on second down with an electric 28-yard run, and he threw an 18-yard touchdown pass across the middle of the end zone to Bray on the next play. Bede kicked the convert to make it a 10-point game with just under four minutes remaining.

Toronto kept things interesting with a late drive in the final minutes. Bethel-Thompson led the Argos down the field on a quick 60-yard drive that ended with a two-yard touchdown toss to Worthy. Crapigna made the extra point to cut Montreal?s lead back down to just three points with just over a minute to go. But the Argos? comeback hopes faded on the final drive of the game when Crapigna?s 51-yard field goal try fell short.

Both teams will be in action again next Saturday, with the Montreal Alouettes hosting the East-leading Hamilton Tiger-Cats at 1:00 p.m. EDT. and the Toronto Argonauts hosting the Ottawa REDBLACKS at 4:00 p.m. EDT.

GAME RECAP
RIDERS? QUEST FOR FIRST CONTINUES WITH WIN OVER LIONS
CFL.CA STAFF

VANCOUVER ? The Saskatchewan Roughriders walked out of BC Place on Friday night with their 11th win of the season, defeating the BC Lions 27-19.

The win puts the Riders (11-5) atop the West Division for now, with the division looking to be going right down to the wire when Week 21 rolls around.

For BC (5-12), this week brought the opportunity for Danny O?Brien to step in for his first career start since entering the league back in 2014 with the Ottawa REDBLACKS.

Saskatchewan?s phenom quarterback Cody Fajardo completed 21 of his 26 passing attempts on the night, putting 224 yards through the air and a touchdown.

Defensively, the Roughriders put up the Green Wall on Friday night: hauling down Lions? quarterbacks six times, forcing two fumbles, and capping the victory off with an interception.

In the first half, it initially got underway as a game for the kickers.

Sergio Castillo took care of breaking the ice off the scoreboard, putting the Lions ahead with a 50-yard field goal in the closing minutes of the opening quarter.

While the offence for either team continued to get their pistons churning, Brett Lauther evened the scoring up quickly in the second period, notching a 52-yard field goal.

Castillo responded with a 43 and 30-yarder, reclaiming the lead for BC.

Fajardo and the Riders? offence finally were able to piece together a drive, capping it off with a 1-yard touchdown by William Powell. A missed convert would leave the game tied at 9-9.

On the ensuing drive for the Lions, Danny O?Brien got caught behind the line by Mike Edem, who happened to knock the ball loose as well. By the time the ball was finally recovered it had travelled 27 yards towards the Riders endzone as Saskatchewan forced the turnover, ultimately resulting in Lauther?s second field goal of the game.

The Roughriders took a 12-9 lead into the dressing room for halftime.

In the third quarter, Saskatchewan started on offence from their 25-yard line. From there, they marched downfield to score a major in nine plays, a play in which Fajardo called a late audible to find Kyran Moore over the middle of the endzone for the score.

With just over four minutes remaining in the third quarter, Grant Kraemer came in for relief of Danny O?Brien.

Kraemer wouldn?t fare much better, however. The former Drake University pivot was sacked twice before going down with a lower-body injury.

As the fourth quarter got underway, Lauther would tack on to Saskatchewan?s lead, hitting his third (28 yards) and fourth (22 yards) field goals of the night.

O?Brien returned to the Lions huddle with nine minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.

Castillo added another field goal to his stat line before the night was done. Bryan Burnham also not only added to his season-long highlight reel but also tacked on a receiving touchdown ? his tenth of the season.

Hoping for a spark of a comeback, the Lions regained possession with less than a minute to play. With time working against them, O?Brien had no other choice but to heave the ball deep downfield, ending up in the hands of Saskatchewan?s Elie Bouka.

As the Roughriders push to finish first in the West Division, they?ll make a trip to Edmonton for the conclusion to Week 20?s schedule. As for the Lions, they?ll spend Week 20 on their final bye week of the season before wrapping up their season in Week 21 against the Calgary Stampeders.

TICATS BEAT REDBLACKS FOR RECORD-SETTING 13TH WIN
CFL.CA STAFF

HAMILTON ? Dane Evans threw for a career-high 452 yards to help lead the Hamilton Tiger-Cats to a 33-12 home win over the Ottawa REDBLACKS on Saturday. The playoff-bound Tabbies set a franchise record by winning 13 regular season games for the first time in franchise history.

A Jalin Marshall touchdown run was the only major in a first half that saw both teams combine for five field goals. The Ticats entered the second half with a narrow three-point lead, but a short touchdown run from quarterback David Watford midway through the third quarter helped put Hamilton up 19-9.

The REDBLACKS made it a one-possession game with another field goal from Lewis Ward, but the Ticats stormed back to extend their lead near the end of the third when Brandon Banks turned on the jets for a 60-yard catch-and-run touchdown. A 50-yard catch from Marshall set up Lirim Hajrullahu?s third field goal of the game, and Hajrullahu added another field goal with a minute remaining to seal the victory.

Banks finished the game with 116 yards on seven catches, bringing his season total to 1,349 while surpassing 100 regular season receptions for the first time in his career.

Tyrell Sutton racked up 149 total yards on 13 carries and four catches. Hamilton?s defence forced nine punts while also notching three sacks and a fumble recovery.

Defence dominated much of the opening quarter, and the REDBLACKS notched a turnover when defensive back De?Chavon Hayes picked off Dane Evans for his third interception of the season. But Hamilton?s defence stood strong and forced Ottawa to settle for a 40-yard field goal from Ward to take the early lead.

The Ticats? offence bounced back from the turnover by responding with a solid drive. Sutton got things started by making a 40-yard over-the-shoulder grab down the middle of the field to convert on second down. Marshall then set the offence up with first-and-goal by gaining 14 yards on a catch-and-run, and he finished the drive off with a five-yard touchdown run. Bralon Addison took the snap in the wildcat formation before handing it off to Marshall for the score.

Hamilton opted to go for the two-point conversion, but Ottawa?s defensive front prevented Sutton from scoring on the short run.

Momentum remained on the Ticats side when they recovered a surprise onside kick on the next play, catching Ottawa off guard. Jumal Rolle recovered the kick for Hamilton, and an 18-yard pass from Evans to Jaelon Acklin brought the ball just outside the red zone. But a costly holding penalty led to a second-and-long scenario, and the Ticats were unable to secure a fresh set of downs. Hajrullahu kicked a 33-yard field goal to give Hamilton a 9-3 lead with 12 minutes to play in the opening half.

The REDBLACKS came up with a big special teams play of their own later in the quarter when Anthony Cioffi broke through to block a Hajrullahu punt. Marco Dubois recovered the ball for Ottawa, and it led to a 27-yard field goal from Ward after Hamilton?s defence shut the door in the red zone.

Ward made a spectacular kick to tie the game up with a minute to go in the half, as he came through with a 56-yard field goal after Stefan Logan helped set it up with a big punt return. But Hamilton quickly regained the lead before half-time. Evans completed back-to-back throws to Banks and Marshall for first down gains, and Hajrullahu made the 38-yard field goal to put the Ticats up 12-9 at the half.

The REDBLACKS appeared to come up with a momentum-shifting interception in the end zone midway through the third quarter, but Sherrod Baltimore?s pick was overturned after a review determined there was pass interference on the play. Hamilton capitalized on the second opportunity with a one-yard touchdown run from Watford on the very next play, and Hajrullahu kicked the convert to give the Ticats a 10-point lead.

Ottawa made it a one-possession game on a 43-yard field goal from Ward, but the Ticats answered back just three plays later. Evans threw a perfect pass over the outstretched arm of defensive back Corey Tindal, and Banks made the over-the-shoulder catch before speeding his way to the end zone for a 60-yard touchdown. Hajrullahu?s extra point gave the Ticats a 26-12 lead entering the fourth quarter.

The Ticats remained aggressive on offence, and Evans stepped up with one of his biggest throws when he connected with Addison for a 48-yard gain. Addison used his speed to beat Cioffi in coverage while setting the offence up inside the 20-yard line. The REDBLACKS stood tall on defence to force a field goal try, but the 18-yard attempt from Hajrullahu went wide to the left and out of bounds for a single point.

Hamilton?s defence forced another punt, and Marshall emerged once again to impact the game with a 50-yard catch to set up a 24-yard field goal from Hajrullahu. The Ticats added a 36-yard field goal with only a minute left on the clock to seal the victory.

Week 20 will see the East-leading Hamilton Tiger-Cats travel to take on the playoff-bound Montreal Alouettes next Saturday at 1:00 p.m. EDT., while the Ottawa REDBLACKS will face the Toronto Argonauts on the road later that day at 4:00 p.m. EDT.

GAME RECAP
STAMPS EDGE BOMBERS TO MOVE BACK INTO FIRST PLACE
CFL.CA STAFF

CALGARY ? A three-touchdown game from Reggie Begelton led the Calgary Stampeders to a 37-33 home win over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Saturday night. The Stamps improve to an 11-5 record and are now tied with the Saskatchewan Roughriders for first place in the West.

Calgary took a first-quarter lead on a touchdown pass from Bo Levi Mitchell to Begelton, but Winnipeg grabbed the lead in the second quarter on a scoop-and-score defensive touchdown from Marcus Sayles. Winnipeg?s defence stepped up again on the next drive when Winston Rose?s league-leading ninth interception set up a 25-yard touchdown run from Lucky Whitehead.

Mitchell responded with another touchdown pass to Begelton, but Winnipeg answered back and extended the lead before half-time when Chris Streveler threw a touchdown strike to leading Bombers receiver Kenny Lawler.

Both teams traded field goals to start the second half, and Calgary made it a tie game entering the fourth quarter when Mitchell led a touchdown drive that he followed up with a successful two-point conversion. Calgary took the lead in the fourth quarter when Mitchell threw a third touchdown strike to Begelton, and an interception from DaShaun Amos on the final play of the game ended Winnipeg?s comeback hopes.

Mitchell threw for 337 yards while completing 22 of 33 passes. Josh Huff had a game-high 121 receiving yards on six catches for Calgary.

Bombers running back Andrew Harris surpassed 14,000 career yards from scrimmage, while Stamps receiver Eric Rogers surpassed 1,000 receiving yards for the second time in his career.

Streveler racked up 85 rushing yards on 15 carries, bringing his season rushing total 726.

Calgary struck first in the opening quarter on a 41-yard field goal from Rene Paredes after Mitchell moved the ball into field goal range with a 55-yard bomb to Eric Rogers. But the Bombers responded later in the quarter when an 18-yard run from Nic Demski set up a 32-yard field goal from Justin Medlock.

Mitchell continued his strong start by connecting with rookie receiver Hergy Mayala for a 24-yard gain on the first play of the next drive. Mitchell then threw a deep 42-yard pass to Huff that set the offence up with first-and-goal, and he capped the drive off one play later with a nine-yard touchdown pass to Begelton. Richie Sindani reeled in the two-point conversion pass to give Calgary an 11-3 lead in the first quarter.

The Bombers cut into the lead with a 34-yard field goal from Medlock, and they took the lead on a momentum-shifting defensive play. Sayles stripped the ball from running back Ante Milanovic-Litre before recovering the fumble himself and returning it 24 yards for a touchdown. Medlock added the convert to give Winnipeg a two-point lead.

Winnipeg?s defence notched another turnover on the first play of the following drive, as Rose intercepted a pass from Mitchell that was intended for Milanovic-Litre. The turnover led to a 25-yard touchdown run from Whitehead one play later, and Medlock kicked the extra point to give the Bombers a 20-11 lead.

The Stamps responded with an 11-play, 80-yard scoring drive that saw Mitchell cap it off with a perfectly thrown 21-yard touchdown strike to Begelton against double coverage. Mitchell then completed the ensuing two-point conversion pass to Rogers to make it a one-point game.

But the Bombers came back to extend their lead before half-time, as Streveler threw a 34-yard touchdown strike to Lawler. Medlock?s extra point put Winnipeg up 27-19 at the half.

Calgary?s defence notched a turnover to start the second half when Streveler?s first throw of the third quarter was intercepted by Raheem Wilson. The turnover led to a 32-yard field goal from Paredes that cut Winnipeg?s lead down to five points.

The Bombers responded with a 41-yard field goal from Medlock, but the Stamps made it a two-point game when Mitchell quickly engineered another scoring drive that ended with a three-yard rushing touchdown from Milanovic-Litre. Mitchell then completed a pass to Huff for the two-point conversion, tying the game at 30 points apiece.

Winnipeg took the lead early in the fourth quarter on a 33-yard field goal from Medlock, but the Stamps regained the lead when Mitchell connected with Begelton for their third touchdown of the game. Begelton?s 17-yard score was set up by a 41-yard catch-and-run from Huff, and Paredes kicked the convert to give Calgary a 37-33 lead.

Streveler briefly exited the game with an apparent lower body injury midway through the fourth quarter after being tackled by linebacker Wynton McManis, but he returned later in the quarter.

A roughing the passer penalty against Winnipeg extended a Stamps drive with four minutes to play, and the penalty became even costlier when Calgary was charged a timeout after unsuccessfully challenging the call. But a big sack on second down from defensive tackle Jake Thomas forced a punt and gave the Bombers? offence another opportunity.

The Stamps came up with a sack of their own to force a turnover on downs with under two minutes, but Winnipeg was given extra life when a 48-yard field goal attempt from Paredes went wide to the left. Whitehead returned the missed kick 36 yards, but the Bombers were unable to complete the comeback as Amos intercepted a Streveler pass in the final seconds.

Both teams will meet again next week when the Winnipeg Blue Bombers host the Calgary Stampeders next Friday at 8:30 p.m. EDT.
