Minnesota hands Ohio State 1st loss

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) Marcus Carr scored a career-high 35 points and Daniel Oturu had 14 points and 13 rebounds, and Minnesota toppled undefeated and third-ranked Ohio State 84-71 on Sunday night for coach Richard Pitino's first win against a top-five team.

Oturu outworked Kaleb Wesson in the paint to win the battle of two of the Big Ten's best big men with his sixth double-double of the season for the Gophers (5-5, 1-1). Prior to this game, the highest-ranked opponent they'd beaten in seven years under Pitino was No. 6 Maryland on Feb. 18, 2016.

Freshmen D.J. Carton (19 points) and E.J. Liddell (14 points) had season highs off the bench for the Buckeyes (9-1, 1-1), and Wesson had 12 points and six rebounds with his playing time limited by foul trouble.

Carr, who's in his debut with the Gophers after sitting out last season following a transfer from Pittsburgh, shot 12 for 17 from the floor to lead a determined bounce-back from a 20-point loss at Iowa earlier in the week.

WOFFORD 68, NO. 17 NORTH CAROLINA 64

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) - Wofford traveled to Chapel Hill and shocked a ranked North Carolina team again, getting 19 points from Trevor Stumpe and riding a 16-0 run in the second half to beat the Tar Heels.

Storm Murphy added 15 points and Messiah Jones had 13 points for the Terriers (7-4), who went on the road to beat North Carolina for the second time in three years.

Wofford, a 12-point underdog, made four 3-pointers during its decisive spurt, a 6-minute stretch in which the Tar Heels missed 10 consecutive shots.

Garrison Brooks had 17 points and 12 rebounds for North Carolina (6-4) in its first regular-season game at Carmichael Arena since Jan. 4, 1986.

Brandon Robinson added a career-high 16 points for the Tar Heels, who lost their third straight game.

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) Texas Tech is back in the AP Top 25 after the school's first-ever win over a No. 1 team.

The 24th-ranked Red Raiders did just enough to stay there against a team that had already been blown out twice by ranked opponents this season.

Terrence Shannon Jr. scored 18 points and Texas Tech rallied in the second half for a 71-65 victory over Southern Miss on Monday night.

Davide Moretti scored 17 points and hit a punctuating 3-pointer on an otherwise rough shooting night as the Red Raiders (7-3) extended the nation's second-longest active home nonconference winning streak to 52 games.

''I think a lot of times when we sit around and feel sorry for ourselves. We're disrespecting the opponent,'' coach Chris Beard said. ''They played harder than us in a lot of stretches of the game and we don't really say that about our team as much but that's exactly what happened.''

Texas Tech, which lost to Virginia in overtime in the national championship game last season, had dropped from 12th all the way out of the Top 25 with two straight losses, then lost again at DePaul.

The Red Raiders returned to the poll following a two-week absence with a 70-57 victory over then-No. 1 Louisville at Madison Square Garden in New York last Tuesday.

But the Golden Eagles (3-9) led well into the second half and were within two points in the final three minutes despite playing without leading scorer Boban Jacdonmi and two other players who have started this season.

''We're a team in transition,'' coach Jay Ladner said. ''I thought it was good for our young players. I am in no way happy that we lost and not taking any type of solace, any type of moral victory and our players aren't either.''

Texas Tech was also short-handed in its fourth straight game without freshman Jahmi'us Ramsey. The team's leading scorer has been sidelined by a hamstring injury.

LaDavius Draine scored 21 points and Gabe Watson added 20 in Southern Miss' eighth consecutive loss to a ranked team going back to January 2011. Three of the defeats have come this season, including 25-point losses to Gonzaga, which was seventh and is up to No. 2, and Seton Hall, unranked now but 13th at the time.

Graduate transfer Chris Clarke had his second double-double for Texas Tech with 14 points and 11 rebounds and led the Red Raiders with six assists.

Texas Tech went ahead for good at 52-51 on a layup by Kyler Edwards with 8:54 remaining.

Moretti, the only returning starter for Texas Tech, was 1 of 12 from the field while missing all seven 3-point attempts in the first half.

The junior guard hit one from long range to get the Red Raiders going early in the second half, then another for the biggest Texas Tech lead to that point at 67-60 with 55 seconds to go. He finished 4 of 17 from the field.

''I know how much time I spend in the gym,'' Moretti said. ''When I'm not shooting well I just repeat to myself, `I work too hard to not do good, to not shoot well.' I pay the price every day so it's just like a mental thing.''

BIG PICTURE

Southern Miss: While the losing streak against ranked teams continued, it was the first time in five such games that the Golden Eagles lost by less than 25 points.

Texas Tech: The Red Raiders made up for another bad shooting night by going 24 of 27 on free throws. With Moretti going 3 of 11 from long range, Texas Tech was 5 of 22 for 23% beyond the arc. They haven't been above 33% from long range in the past five games.

POLL IMPLICATIONS

Now that they're back on a winning streak, the Red Raiders are in position to enter Big 12 play ranked. If they stay there, the next ranked opponent is likely to be Baylor, currently No. 10, in the second conference game.

CLARKE'S SURGE

Clarke, who transferred from Virginia Tech, has reached double figures in rebounds in four of the past five games and is starting to show some triple-double potential. His season high in assists is nine, reached twice. ''He's a complete player,'' said Edwards, who scored nine points along with TJ Holyfield.

No. 5 Ohio State bounces back, tops Southeast Missouri State

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) Kaleb Wesson had 18 points and 10 rebounds as No. 5 Ohio State bounced back from its first loss of the season and beat Southeast Missouri State 80-48 on Tuesday night.

Ohio State (10-1) was playing two days after it dropped an 84-71 decision at Minnesota. That loss led to the Buckeyes dropping two spots in the AP Top 25 poll.

The Buckeyes played their second straight game without sophomore guard Duane Washington Jr., who was sidelined with an apparent rib injury. Washington is the team's second-leading scorer at 11.4 points per game.

Andre Wesson scored 14 points, while Kyle Young and D.J. Carton each had 10 points for the Buckeyes.

D.Q. Nicholas and Isaiah Gable each had 10 points for Southeast Missouri State (3-8).

NO. 13 DAYTON 71, NORTH TEXAS 58

DAYTON, Ohio (AP) - Jalen Crutcher and Ryan Mikesell scored 16 points apiece, and Dayton finally shook free at the end to beat North Texas.

The Flyers (9-1) took the court with their highest ranking since December 1968, when they made it as high as No. 6. A sloppy second half kept it close.

Dayton turned it over eight times in the second half, helping North Texas (4-7) cut the lead to nine points with six minutes left. Crutcher hit an unguarded 3-pointer that blunted the comeback, and the Mean Green fell short in their bid for a fourth all-time win over a ranked team.

Javion Hamlet had 19 points, and Zachary Simmons added 18 for North Texas.

NO. 19 FLORIDA STATE 98, NORTH FLORIDA 81

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Balsa Koprivica scored 15 points and fellow big man Dominik Olejniczak added 11 as Florida State beat North Florida.

The 7-footers were able to capitalize on their height advantage, making shots in the lane and leading the Seminoles to a 39-27 rebounding edge. Koprivica was 6 of 8 from the floor, while Olejniczak went 5 for 7.

M.J. Walker had 11 points, one of seven Seminoles who scored in double figures. Florida State (9-2) has won 12 straight home games in a streak that dates to the 2018-19 season.

Ivan Gandia-Rosa scored 23 points, knocking down four 3-pointers, for North Florida (7-6).

13) One thing about the new baseball rule that will get talked about a lot in the spring; relievers will have to face 3+ batters in an appearance, unless they finish an inning, then they can be replaced between innings, even if they faced only one or two hitters.

Idea of the rule is to reduce pitching changes within a half-inning, to keep the pace of the game flowing better. There was a game last year where a team had five batters bat in the 8th inning, and they faced five different pitchers. Not good.

12) Appearances that would not have been allowed had the new rule been in effect during the las three seasons:
2019: 649? Oliver Perez had 22 of them, out of his 65 appearances.
2018: 712
2017: 720

11) In month of November, $316.5M was bet on sports in Pennsylvania, $562.7M was wagered in New Jersey; thats $879.2M, just in those two states.

10) North Carolina?s star freshman Cole Anthony is out 4-6 weeks after getting his knee scoped. Tar Heels are +69 this year when Anthony is in the game, minus-47 when he is on the bench.

A pair of late starts out west highlight Wednesday?s college basketball betting matchups. First up, the Gonzaga Bulldogs will play host to the North Carolina Tar Heels. In one of two late-night starts, the Utah Runnin? Utes tangle with the Kentucky Wildcats in Las Vegas.

The ACC?s Tar Heels have tumbled out of the national rankings following Sunday?s stunning 68-64 loss to Wofford as 11 ?-point home favorites. This followed losses to Ohio State and Virginia both straight-up and against the spread.

North Carolina is now 1-4 SU in its last five games after starting the season with five SU wins. It is a woeful 2-8 ATS overall with the total staying UNDER in nine of its first 10 games. Injuries have been the big story in Chapel Hill. Starters? Cole Anthony (knee) and Leaky Black (foot) missed Sunday?s game. Anthony remains out indefinitely.

The Bulldogs are headed the other way up the national rankings after winning 11 of their first 12 games SU. They have also covered in their last three outings to improve to 7-4-1 ATS.

The went OVER 150 ? points in Saturday?s 84-80 upset over Arizona as slight two-point road underdogs. The total has gone OVER in Gonzaga?s last six games while scoring an average of 83.2 points per game. Overall, the Bulldogs are ranked fifth in the nation in scoring with 85.8 points per game. This West Coast Conference power has seven different players averaging at least 10 PPG.

Utah, out of the Pac-12 comes into the Neon Hoops Showcase in Las Vegas with a SU four-game winning streak as part of an 8-2 record overall. It has covered in its last three outings to improve to 6-4 ATS. The total stayed UNDER 143 points in Saturday?s 60-49 victory against Weber State as nine-point favorites after going OVER in four of the Utes? previous five games.

Timmy Allen has scored 19 points in each of his last two games and the sophomore forward leads the team in scoring with an average of 20.6 PPG. Utah is averaging 83.0 points a game.

The SEC?s Wildcats have quietly worked their way back up the national rankings at 8-1 SU after starting the season with an upset over Michigan State as three-point underdogs. The only blemish was a bad loss to Evansville as heavy 25-point favorites.

Kentucky has fallen to 3-5-1 ATS after failing to cover in six of its last seven games. The total has stayed UNDER in six of the nine games. Junior forward Nick Richards is averaging a team-high 13.8 PPG. He is one of five Wildcats averaging at least 10 points a game.
