Monday?s 6-pack
Top six teams in country in 2-point FG% defense:
39.2%? Arizona
40.1%? Cincinnati
40.6%? USC
40.7%? UConn
41.4%? Indiana
42.0%? Gonzaga

Quote of the Day
?It?s great that it?s here (in the Super Bowl). I don?t give a shit where it is. I just wanna play in the dang thing. The fact that it?s under this roof, it?s gonna be awesome. Our fans did an unbelievable job.?
Matthew Stafford

Monday?s quiz
What quarterbacks started for the Bengals in their other two Super Bowls?

Sunday?s quiz
In the baseball movie Trouble with the Curve, Clint Eastwood plays a scout for the Atlanta Braves.

Saturday?s quiz
Tennessee Titans? QB Ryan Tannehill was a WR his first two years at Texas A&M.

***********************************

Monday?s Den: Wrapping up a sports weekend??..

13) Bengals 27, Chiefs 24 OT:
? Kansas City led this game 21-3 late in second quarter.
? Chiefs in first half: 33 plays, 311 yards, 21 points.
? Chiefs in second half: 35 plays, 83 yards, 3 points.
? Cincinnati is in Super Bowl for first time in 33 years.

12) Rams 20, 49ers 17:
? Rams trailed this game 17-7 after three quarters.
? LA?s last three drives: 26 plays, 187 yards, 13 points.
? Kupp caught 11 passes for 142 yards; Beckham 9 for 113 yards.
? 49ers in 4th quarter: 12 plays, 28 yards.

11) Super Bowl tidbits:
? This is only time in last 46 years where #1-2 seeds in both conferences all failed to reach the Super Bowl. This year is #4 vs #4 seed.
? Opening line of Super Bowl, which means little: Rams -3.5, total 49.5
? Both head coaches in the Super Bowl are under 40 years old; will that lead more teams to hire young head coaches?

10) Las Vegas Raiders are hiring Josh McDaniels as their new coach and Patriots director of player personnel Dave Ziegler as their next general manager, so New England has to do some rebuilding in their front office. McDaniels was 11-17 in two years coaching Denver.

9) It was so cold here in upstate New York the last few days; has to be a cruddy time to be a mailman, trudging thru snow, walking on ice to deliver mail. We got lucky and missed on the big snowfall that fell closer to the ocean, but at least February starts this week, always a good thing.

8) Auburn paid basketball Bruce Pearl for his good work; he will make $5.4M a year, he is now the third-highest paid hoop coach in the SEC. There were rumors Louisville might come after him, but now the Cardinals can poach a different coach.

7) West Virginia had big man Oscar Tshiebwe the last two seasons, but Kentucky poached him last spring, because that is how college sports work now.

Last two years, West Virginia was 40-20, 20-15 in Big X games. This year, Mountaineers are 2-5 in the Big X and have lost five games in a row- they?re also the #343 team in country on the defensive boards.

Meanwhile, Tshiebwe has led Kentucky to a 17-4 record; poaching veteran players is, in lot of ways, more important now than recruiting high school kids.

6) Speaking of Huggins, I wonder what he and Jim Boeheim think of their schools throwing their basketball programs under the bus, to try and help their football programs.

West Virginia plays at Baylor Monday night; they were in Arkansas Saturday, and in Lubbock to play Texas Tech January 22.
? Morgantown is 1,497 miles from Lubbock
? Morgantown is 1,308 miles from Waco
? Morgantown is 896 miles from Little Rock

West Virginia?s shortest road trip in the Big X is Iowa State, 870 miles away. Not good.

5) Kansas poached Remy Martin from Arizona State last summer; ASU had gone 74-48 the last four years, but with Martin gone, they?re 6-12, 2-6 in the Pac-12, and Bobby Hurley looks like he is about to have a nervous breakdown.

Kansas is 17-3 this year; it helps to take the best players from other teams.

ASU poached players from Illinois State/Toledo; Marreon Jackson played three years for Toledo, shooting 36% on his 468 3-point shots.

Problem is, he is shooting 22.6% on the arc for the Sun Devils, while Toledo has gone 17-4 without him, but the Rockets will have to win the MAC tournament to get to March Madness, while ASU would?ve made the NCAA?s with 17-18 wins, which they won?t get this year.

4) Texas visits Texas Tech Tuesday, which is coach Chris Beard returning to face the program he led to a 112-55 record the last five years, including a Final Four bid three years ago. Beard went to college at Texas and Texas is a bigger $$$ school than Tech, so as usual, $$$$ talked.

3) Utah Jazz lost G Joe Ingles to a knee injury Sunday; they?re afraid it is a bad injury. Ingles was scoring 7.4 ppg in 25.2 mpg this season.

2) QB Jaxson Dart will transfer from USC to Ole Miss, along with TE Michael Trigg, because every quarterback who doesn?t start has to transfer.

Here?s the thing: Wisconsin is making a big push to poach QB Caleb Williams and if that happens, where does USC turn for a QB next fall?

1) The Caribbean baseball Series is being played this week, but because MLB has no clue how to market its product, the games are being televised on ESPN Desportes, which isn?t widely seen, because they don?t speak English on that channel.

Show the games on MLB Network; Lord knows there is nothing else to show these days on that channel. Market your sport MLB, if you want it to remain popular.

Tuesday?s 6-pack
Draft order for April?s draft in Las Vegas:
1) Jacksonville
2) Detroit
3) Houston
4) Jets
5) Giants
6) Carolina

Quote of the Day
?We?re gonna take it day by day. We?re not gonna make any predictions. I wouldn?t do that to Daniel (Jones) or really any other player. I don?t think that?s fair to compare him to another guy that I was working with. He?s himself. We?re gonna find out what he does well. We?re gonna try to implement a system that suits him. And then it?s our job to bring pieces in that help him to be the best version of himself and the best quarterback for us.?
Giants coach Brian Daboll

Tuesday?s quiz
Rams have played in four Super Bowls, with four different head coaches. Who are they?

Monday?s quiz
Ken Anderson, Boomer Esiason started for the Bengals in their other two Super Bowls.

Sunday?s quiz
In the baseball movie Trouble with the Curve, Clint Eastwood plays a scout for the Atlanta Braves.

**********************************

Tuesday?s Den: Nobody asked me, but??.

13) Green Bay Packers named a new offensive line coach Monday; Luke Butkus, nephew of the Bears? Hall of Fame linebacker.

Dick Butkus is one of the greatest Bears ever; he tweeted this, about his nephew going to work for one of Chicago?s biggest rivals:

?shout out to my nephew luke the new o line coach for the packers so great to see you moving up with an expansion team?

12) Green Bay lost its offensive coordinator to Denver, its passing game coordinator to Chicago; its one thing to take assistant coaches from successful teams, but you need a good QB to have a really good offense. If Aaron Rodgers stays in Green Bay, that leaves Denver with suspects under center, and the Bears will be using young QB Fields, so no guarantees there.

11) Four short years ago, Philadelphia Eagles won the Super Bowl, with Doug Pederson as coach, Nick Foles at QB, subbing for an injured Carson Wentz.

Today, Pederson is unemployed, Foles was a 3rd-string QB for Chicago this year and Wentz missed the playoffs in Indianapolis. Success can be fleeting in the NFL.

10) Speaking of which, will San Francisco trade Jimmy Garoppolo? Over last five years, 49ers are 35-16 with Garoppolo under center, 8-28 with anyone else, but they drafted Trey Lance and seem committed to him as the QB going forward.

9) If the 49ers do trade Garoppolo, where will he go? At quick glance, here are five teams who need a starting QB the most:

? Denver? Ironic that John Elway can?t find a quarterback.
? New Orleans? Unless you think Jameis Winston is the answer; if Sean Payton thought that, he?d still be coaching the Saints.
? Pittsburgh? Big Ben is a tough act to follow.
? Tampa Bay? Buccaneers could soon be in a total rebuild, if coach Arians leaves.
? Washington? They?ve have three winning seasons since 2008.

8) Saw a mock draft online yesterday; the first QB-RB-WR was the 8th pick. Not a lot of great QB prospects in this draft, so teams will use free agency to improve under center.

Obviously, the Deshaun Watson situation will be the biggest domino to fall; once he finds a new home, then the picture will be more clear.

7) I?m curious; the day after teams win their conference championship and make it into the Super Bowl, how much money do they make selling t-shirts, sweatshirts, etc? Has to be a pretty good windfall, right?

6) Chiefs? coach Andy Reid has coached in nine conference championship games, has a 3-6 record, despite being favored in eight of the nine games.

5) Bengals? coach Zac Taylor was an assistant coach for the Rams in 2017-18, Sean McVay?s first two years in Los Angeles.

4) One of the underreported aspects of college football is the nomadic existence of coaches.

Oklahoma State just named Derek Mason as its new defensive coordinator; this past year, Mason had that job at Auburn. Before that, he was the head coach at Vanderbilt.

Nashville, Auburn, Stillwater, all in 26 months or so. There are lot of guys whose career paths are similar. They must be very good at picking (or their wives are)

Arizona State poached OC Glenn Thomas from UNLV, as Herm Edwards rebuilds his coaching staff.

3) There is a NASCAR race in the LA Coliseum this weekend, which will look very strange. Half-mile track built around/over a football field.

2) Purdue C Zach Edey is 7-foot-4, 290 pounds; he has a 7-7?? wingspan; he?s scored 20+ points in seven games this year, despite never playing more than 27:00. Edey has played more than 21:00 in only two games this season, but he?s productive, and when everyone else is tired, he?s still 7-foot-4.

1) Arizona is 17-2 this season, despite having a new coach and the #355 experience team, out of 358 teams. Wildcats have eight foreign players on their roster; they play pace #3, very fast.

You would think it would be difficult to have great chemistry with players from so many different places, but coach Tommy Lloyd has experience recruiting foreign players and Arizona is fun to watch.

They struggled shooting the last couple games (10-51 on arc) but everyone goes thru stages like that. Will be interesting to follow them the rest of this season.

Wednesday?s 6-pack
? Texas Tech 77, Texas 64? Coach Beard loses in his return to Lubbock.
? Michigan State 65, Maryland 63? Spartans blew 15-point lead, won it with 0:01.5 left.
? North Carolina 90, Louisville 83, OT? Bacot had 19 points, 22 rebounds.
? Auburn 100, Alabama 81? Auburn was 31-39 on foul line; lot of foul shots.
? Northwestern 79, Rutgers 78, OT? Wildcats blew a 52-28 lead, still got a win.
? Davidson 81, St Bonaventure 76? Wildcats made 12-28 on the arc.

Quote of the Day
?We don?t have the same funding resources as some of these schools do for these NIL deals. It?s basically dealing with different salary caps. Now we have a sport that has completely different salary caps and some of these schools have, whatever, five to 10 times more than everybody else in what they can pay the players. I know nobody uses those phrases, but that is what it is.?
Ole Miss football coach Lane Kiffin

Wednesday?s quiz
Where did Charles Barkley play his college basketball?

Tuesday?s quiz
Rams have played in four Super Bowls, with four different head coaches; Ray Malavasi, Dick Vermeil, Mike Martz, Sean McVay.

Monday?s quiz
Ken Anderson, Boomer Esiason started for the Bengals in their other two Super Bowls.

****************************

Wednesday?s Den: Mid-week musings???

13) Football is the only sport where the pro game is shorter than the college game; clocks stop after first downs in college. College teams run more average plays in a game than NFL teams do, which is big reason why turnovers are so critical. There aren?t that many drives in an NFL game.

Rams had eight drives Sunday, 49ers had nine (not counting kneel-downs at end of half). Rams threw an INT in red zone on one drive, dropped a TD pass on another, two wasted chances that created their problems entering the 4th quarter.

Turnovers can be random/luck-related, which is part of reason why handicapping football is so difficult.

12) Minnesota Vikings are interviewing Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh Wednesday; rumor is they want him to be their next coach. 49ers assistant DeMeco Ryans turned down a chance for a second interview, signaling that he thinks Harbaugh-to-Minnesota is a done deal.

NFL teams have to interview a certain amount of minority candidates (Rooney Rule) for head coach openings, but if a guy thinks he has no shot at getting the job, he can turn down the interview. Younger guys take the interview, just to get experience in the interview process.

First three coach openings this month have all been filled by coaches with offense background.

11) Former Miami Dolphins coach Brian Flores is suing the NFL and three times for racial discrimination; apparently he has given up on ever being a head coach again, if he is suing the whole damn league.

Flores went 24-25 in three years with Miami, never made the playoffs, even though his last two teams went 10-6/9-8.

Here?s the problem Flores has:
? Week 17, 2020, Dolphins lost 56-26 in Buffalo
? Week 17, 2021, Dolphins lost 34-3 at Tennessee.

When your team goes in the tank at big moments in critical games, it doesn?t look good for the coach. NFL teams are worth an average of $3B each; they?re entitled to hire who they damn well please to be their head coach.

Getting along well with others is part of being a good coach; there were lot of rumors that Flores/Miami?s front office were often at odds about their jobs.

10) Tom Brady officially retired Tuesday, meaning that Canton, OH will be a good place to avoid in August 2027, when Roethlisberger/Brady get inducted into the Hall of Fame.

I was in Canton for the 2001 Hall of Fame events, to see Jack Youngblood/Jackie Slater get inducted. Marv Levy also got in that year, so lot of Buffalo fans were there and Lynn Swann got in, so lot of Pittsburgh fans showed up.

Steeler fans were insufferable that day, ragging on the Buffalo fans because they?ve never won a Super Bowl- they were really annoying, so could be lot of trash talk between Steeler/Patriot fans in 2027. The ?annoying meter? will be off the charts, both ways.

9) Buccaneers will have $32M of dead money next year, which is a salary cap charge for a player no longer on a team?s roster, with Brady retiring before June 2.Tampa Bay can get some salary cap relief by keeping him on the roster until June- that?s what the Saints did when Drew Brees retired.

8) Understood that the transfer portal is a way of life in college sports now, but when I see a kid playing for his third school in four years, it makes me squeamish about the player.

James Akinjo played two years at Georgetown, then bolted to Arizona, then bolted to Baylor.

Georgetown lost its last seven games before Akinjo bolted; Arizona went 5-6 in its last 11 games LY, then Akinjo bolted and the Wildcats changed coaches. Arizona is 17-2 this season with a new coach and almost entirely-new roster.

Now the highly-skilled Akinjo is at Baylor, which won the national title last year. Bears are 19-3 this season, 7-2 in conference; will be interesting to see how this all plays out.

7) Penn State 90, Iowa 86, 2OT:
? Penn State shot 57% inside arc, Iowa 35%
? Hawkeyes tipped in an airball at buzzer to force OT.
? Iowa lost three of its last four games.

6) Wyoming 84, Colorado State 78, OT:
? This was really good game; Mountain West is better this year.
? Maldonado scored 35 points, had 7 assists for Wyoming
? Wyoming played only one sub more than 7:00, at high altitude.

5) NC-Wilmington is on an incredible run; Seahawks started the season #277 on KenPom?s rankings; they were picked to finish last in the CAA by Blue Ribbon Yearbook, after going 38-76 the previous four years, 18-43 in conference games.

After starting this season 3-5, UNCW has gone on a 12-0 run- they were underdogs in eight of the 12 games, going 11-0 against the spread (one game was against an NAIA team). Now the Seahawks are up to #222, are have a 2-game lead in the CAA- they?ll still have to win the CAA tournament to get into March Madness, but they?re having a great season.

4) If you?ve got an extra $3B hanging around, the Denver Broncos are for sale. Last NFL team that was sold were the Carolina Panthers, who went for $2.2B- Broncos are said to be worth more than the Panthers, so the deal should be around $3B.

3) Pitt-West Virginia will open their college football season against each other next September , the regional rivals? first meeting since 2011.

2) QB Caleb Williams finally decided to bolt to USC, after leaving Oklahoma when Lincoln Riley skipped town to coach the Trojans. Wisconsin tried very hard to lure Williams to Madison, but what 20-year old passer chooses Madison over Tinseltown?

1) MLB Network showed Game 7 of the 1965 World Series Tuesday, Twins-Dodgers, Sandy Koufax against Jim Kaat. Lot of great players in the game, which was played in the daytime (the night World Series game was in 1971).

Ray Scott broadcast the first 4.5 innings, Vin Scully the last 4.5; two great announcers. Lot of great players: Koufax-Drysdale-Oliva-Killebrew-Kaat.

Earl Battey caught for the Twins that day; his grandson plays basketball for Colorado now.

TV coverage of baseball is so much better now; weren?t many graphics back then. No one was talking about pitch counts or defensive positioning. Was fun to watch it; I was five years old back then? game was in bacl/white, that?s how old I am. LOL
