Sunday’s Den: Wrapping up a sports Saturday……

— Went to McDonald’s for lunch Saturday, first time I had been there in over a year, which is surprising, now that I think of it. There were seven cars backed up at the drive-thru line, and it was a great day here in upstate New York, 65-70 degrees, so I parked the car and went inside to get my lunch.

Never looked at the menu on the wall, just ordered what I always get, two fish sandwiches and a vanilla milkshake— it costs $19.00 now!!!! Freakin’ fast food has outpriced itself; this was the last time they’ll see me for a long time. Milkshake was really good, though.

— San Diego State 72, Florida Atlantic 71
Lamont Butler hit an 18-foot jumper from right baseline at buzzer for the win.
FAU led 56-42 with 13:53 left in the game.
Aztecs made 9-18 shots on the arc, only 13-22 on foul line.

— Florida Atlantic finishes a great season 35-4; they’re moving into the AAC next season, for football reasons. Coach Dusty May said this week that teams are already trying to poach FAU’s players; we’ll see if they can keep their squad together. Going to college in Miami has to have its advantages.

Some good news for the Owls; May will coach FAU next season and is set to sign a lucrative long-term contract to stay with the school.

— UConn 72, Miami 59
UConn won its five NCAA tourney games by 24-15-23-28-13 points.
Huskies ended first half on an 18-5 run, after score had been tied 19-19.
Miami shot only 32.3% from the floor.

— Early pointspread on the national title game was UConn, minus 6, but as I type this, it has already been bet up to 7.5 or 8.

— Last 17 years, San Francisco Giants have started 17 different left fielders on Opening Day:
2007— Barry Bonds……. 2008— Dave Roberts
2009— Fred Lewis……..2010— Mark DeRosa
2011— Pat Burrell………2012— Aubrey Huff
2013— Andres Torres……2014— Mike Morse
2015— Nori Aoki………2016— Angel Pagan
2017— Jarrett Parker……….2018— Hunter Pence
2019— Connor Joe……….2020— Alex Dickerson
2021— Austin Slater……….2022— Joc Pederson
2023— Blake Sabol

— Dodgers 10, Arizona 1— Trayce Thompson (Klay’s brother) hit three homers, knocked in eight runs.

— Red Sox 9, Orioles 8— Leading 8-7 in last inning, Baltimore’s left fielder dropped an easy fly ball that would’ve ended the game, then Adam Duvall hit a walk-off homer to send the fans home happy.

— Cardinals 4, Blue Jays 1— Flaherty threw five no-hit innings, but he also walked seven guys, using 95 pitches to get his 15 outs.

— Angels 13, A’s 1— Shintaro Fujinami’s major league debut was…….a disaster. He got seven outs, he gave up eight runs. No bueno.

— Guardians 2, Mariners 0— Aaron Civale tossed seven shutout innings; bad day for Seattle— they put P Robbie Ray on the injured list with a flexor strain, whatever that is.

— Rangers 16, Phillies 3— Mitch Garver hit a couple homers; Texas scored 27 runs in winning their first two games. Rangers are second team since 1994 to score 10+ runs in both of their first two games of a season (’21 Royals are the other)

— Twins 2, Royals 0— Then there is Kansas City, which lost its first two games 2-0/2-0; Sonny Gray tossed five shutout innings in this game.

— Giants 7, Bronx 5— New York had bases loaded, one out in last inning, but Stanton grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to end the game. Brandon Crawford was 3-5 with three RBI for the Giants.

— Braves 7, Nationals 1— Matt Olson homered twice for Atlanta; Strider tossed six shutout innings. Braves outscored Washington 14-3 in winning their first two games.

— Brewers 3, Cubs 1— Game was scoreless after five, Cubs led 1-0 after seven on an Ian Happ homer, but Milwaukee scored three runs in 8th inning , their first runs in two games.

— Mets 6, Marlins 2— Mark Canha went 3-4, scored three runs, knocked in two more; rough day in Miami. Marlins lost, Hurricanes/FAU both lost in the Final Four.

— Reds 6, Pirates 2— Lodolo needed 109 pitches to get thru five innings; he got 22 whiffs on 48 swings, but he also allowed nine baserunners.

Tweet of the Day
“When I graduated college and I was looking for a grad assistant position, Lou Henson hired me. It showed the quality of character he had that he’s hiring the son of a rival of Big Ten school’s coach’s son. He didn’t worry about it. He didn’t care about that.”
San Diego State coach Brian Dutcher, whose dad Jim used to coach Minnesota

Monday’s Den: Wrapping up a sports Sunday

— They were talking on the Rockies-Padres game Saturday night how umpire Pat Hoberg is the best umpire in the major leagues on balls/strikes, he even graded out perfect in one game last year. In nine innings, he didn’t miss one pitch, which is pretty impressive.

— Red Sox 9, Orioles 5— Boston take two of three in this series, scoring nine runs in all three games; they are the third team in baseball history to score at 9+ runs in three straight games to start a season (’76 Reds/’78 Brewers).

— Rangers 2, Phillies 1— Bruce Bochy’s Rangers are 3-0; they scored 27 runs in their first two games, then won this one with pitching- their bullpen got 10 outs, allowing one baserunner. Phillies were 1-8 with runners in scoring position.

— Guardians 6, Mariners 5 (10)— Cleveland scored winning run on a throwing error by the catcher on a potential double play ball; Guardians went to Seattle and won three of four games to start the season.

— Mets 5, Marlins 1— Kodai Senga allowed one run in 5.1 IP, winning his first major league start; Tommy Pham went 3-4 with three RBI.

— Twins 7, Royals 4— Kansas City was 15th team since 1940 to get shut out in its first two games of a season; Joey Gallo hit homers off of two KC relievers to hand the Royals their third loss.

— Bronx 6, Giants 0— New York blanked the Giants twice this weekend; rookie Brito threw five shutout innings, needing only 76 pitches. Stanton hit a 485-foot homer, the second-longest of his career. Judge hit his second homer in three games.

— Arizona 2, Dodgers 1— Jake McCarthy knocked in the winning run with a 9th inning drag bunt as the Diamondbacks split four games in Chavez Ravine. Dodgers scored 18 runs in their two wins; both Arizona wins were by 2-1 scores.

— Angels 6, A’s 0— Tyler Anderson tossed six shutout innings; he looked like Steve Carlton against a feeble Oakland offense that scored three runs in three games this weekend.

— Cardinals 9, Blue Jays 4— St Louis got nine runs in 3.2 IP against Chris Bassitt; Nolan Gorman hit a couple of homers for the Redbirds. St Louis scored 22 runs in three games this weekend, but only won two of the three games.

— Nationals 4, Braves 1— MacKenzie Gore allowed one run in 5.1 IP, the Washington bullpen got the last 11 outs in their first win of the season. Nationals turned three double plays.

— White Sox 6, Astros 3— Teams split their 4-game series; Clevinger threw five shutout innings for the Pale Hose. Now would be a good time to play Houston, with Altuve/Brantley out of their lineup. Brantley should be back in 7-10 days, Altuve is out until June.

— Rays 5, Tigers 1— Tampa Bay outscored Detroit 21-3 in their 3-game sweep; Jeffrey Springs tossed six no-hit innings here, allowing only one baserunner.

— Hawks 132, Mavericks 130 OT— When Dallas traded for Kyrie Irving, they were 28-26; they won their first three games after the trade, but now they’re 37-42, having lost seven of their last eight games. Chemistry is a funny thing in basketball; you can’t buy it.

— Trailblazers 107, Timberwolves 105— Portland was down four starters; they had lost 11 of their last 12 games, but they pull the upset as 19.5-point underdogs, the 2nd-biggest NBA upset in the last 30 years (Orlando (+21) beat the Bulls in 1992).

— Edmonton Oilers’ Leon Draisaitl scored his 30th power play goal of the season Saturday, just the fifth NHL player to do that (Mario Lemieux did it twice).

— San Diego State is third team ever to win consecutive NCAA Tournament games by one point, joining St Joe’s in 1981, Loyola Chi in 2018 on that short list.

they went 3/out 15 times on those 48 drives- their offense is dismal.

College basketball started Monday night……..
James Madison (+16) 79, Michigan State 76 OT
Dukes were a freakin’ 16-point underdog; a great win for them.
MSU shot 1-20 on the arc, 23-37 on foul line, and lost by 3.
JMU jumped out to a 25-12 lead, but trailed by 6 with 8:35 left in the game.

Princeton (+5.5) 68, Rutgers 61— Not often an Ivy League team beats a Big 14 team.

Wake Forest 101, Elon 78
Elon led 36-15 early on.
Deacons shot 74.4% inside the arc.

Abilene Christian (+10.5) 64, Oklahoma State 59
Visiting Wildcats shot 54% inside the arc, led by 18 with 13:25 left in game.

Bradley 73, UAB 71, OT
Visiting Braves led by 20 in first half.
UAB stormed back, led by 11 with 6:42 left in game.
Blazers were 3-19 on arc, 18-29 on foul line.

Belmont 89, Georgia State 87— This was a really good game between two good mid-majors, kind of a like a play-in game to the tournament in March.
Belmont was 17-22 on foul line, Georgia State 8-14.

— Bad Beat of the Night; Tex-San Antonio 78, Western Illinois 68, OT— Very tough beat if you had the Leathernecks, +5.5.

— Word of the Day: Shill— someone who gets paid to talk about or describe someone or something in a favorable way.

— Managerial changes in baseball:
Cubs hired Milwaukee manager Craig Counsell, gave him $8M a year.
Mets hired Bronx bench coach Carlos Mendoza as their new manager.
Cleveland Guardians hired Stephen Vogt as their new manager.

Vogt played 10 years in the big leagues; he played 70 games in the majors as recently as 2022. He was a bullpen coach in Seattle last year.

Mendoza managed in the minor leagues for two years, has been a big league coach since 2018.

Counsell had a 9-year regular season record of 707-625 with Milwaukee; he was 7-12 in the five years he led Milwaukee in the playoffs.

— Nine weeks into the season, the entire AFC North is over .500.

— So far this season, under has been a profitable play in the NFL:
since Week 3, under is 67-35-1
since Week 5, under is 47-23-1
prime-time games, under is 21-7

overall for the whole season, under is 82-52-1

— Ravens’ QB Lamar Jackson is leading the NFL in completion %age; last year, he finished 25th in that category. New offensive coordinator Todd Monken has worked wonders with the Ravens’ offense so far this season.

— Over their last four games, Buffalo Bills have a minus-6 turnover ratio; hard to win that way.

— ESPN”s Doc Rivers said this last week about the Dallas Mavericks, who have two stars on their team, Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving:

“They have to want to play together” which sounds simple, but it doesn’t happen all the time.

— Kudos to Arizona Wildcats football coach Jedd Fisch, who has his Wildcats at 6-3 and eligible to go bowling in December. From 2018-22, Arizona was 15-38, so this is a huge leap forward for the Wildcats.

— I’d like to thank the support staff at YouTubeTV; had a problem with the set-up on my TV last Friday, wound up on the phone for a half-hour with a support person in the Phillipines and he fixed the problem for me. Appreciate your help.
