Monday’s 6-pack:

Interesting college football spreads for next week:
— Arkansas @ Oklahoma State (-7.5)
— Texas (-3.5) @ Michigan
— Iowa State @ Iowa (-2.5)
— South Carolina @ Kentucky (-6.5)
— Michigan State @ Maryland (-7.5)
— Kansas (-6.5) @ Illinois

Quote of the Day
“A lot of things have been going against us. We need that break just to kind of help the morale in that clubhouse.”
White Sox interim manager Grady Sizemore

Monday’s quiz
In the history of the Houston Astros, which player has scored the most runs?

Sunday’s quiz
Terry Bowden (Bobby Bowden’s son) was Clemson’s football coach, before Dabo Swinney.

Saturday’s quiz

************************************************************

Monday’s Den: Wrapping up a sports weekend…….

USC 27, LSU 20
Trojans outscored LSU 14-3 in the 4th quarter.
USC QB Moss threw for 378 yards in his 2nd college start.
LSU lost its season opener for third year in a row.

Miller Moss is 2-0 as a college starter, throwing for 372/378 yards on neutral fields, after USC lost five of the last six games Caleb Williams played for them.

— College football home underdogs were 5-4 ATS this week.
Home favorites were 10-10 ATS.

— Too-early conference trends:
AAC 2-2 ATS
ACC 4-4 ATS
Big X 3-3 ATS

Big 18 6-6 ATS
C-USA 1-2 ATS, all as road underdogs
MAC 3-3 ATS, all as road underdogs

Mountain West 5-3 ATS
(I just typed Pac-12, had to delete it)
SEC 4-4 ATS
Sun Belt 3-3 ATS

— Minnesota Gophers’ QB Max Brosmer was at I-AA New Hampshire for five years before he became a Gopher; he threw for 6,603 yards the last two years. Has to be a huge jump from playing in the CAA to the Big 18— Minnesota has a 3-week stretch coming up wheee they play Michigan, USC and UCLA in consecutive weeks.

Little different than playing Monmouth, Albany and Towson State.

— Modern baseball
Sunday, the Red Sox took a 1-0 lead in the 5th inning in Detroit; P Cooper Criswell pitched the first four innings, retiring all 12 hitters he faced, striking out five of them. Then, for some freakin’ reason, they took him out of the game; why?!?!?!?!

Criswell has finished five innings in seven starts this year, six innings in two of those; if it ain’t broke, don’t freakin’ fix it. Tigers scored twice in 5th inning and won 4-1, as the overeducated morons in the front office cost the Red Sox a win.

— Two years ago, I couldn’t watch the World Series at home because DirecTV was at war with FOX, so channel 23 here in Albany was blacked out on DirecTV. When DirecTV lost the NFL Sunday Ticket, I dumped it for YouTube TV, which has been a big plus for me.

This weekend, DirecTV is now at war with Disney, which means no ESPN channels or ABC on DirecTV, kind of a big thing with football starting up.

I read on the Interweb that DirecTV once had 21 million customers; now they’re down to 9 million.

— Famous birthdays, September 2nd:
Terry Bradshaw, 76
Nate Archibald, 76
Mark Harmon, 73

Rick Manning, 70
Eric Dickerson, 64
Rex Hudler, 64

Keanu Reeves, 60
Tommy Maddox, 53
Willie Adames, 29

— Gavin Sheets is an OF/1B for the White Sox, who are 31-107 and at one point, lost 21 games in a row. His dad Larry Sheets was an OF/DH for ’88 Orioles, who wear 54-107 and started the season with a 21-game losing skid.

Ironically, after starting that season 0-21, Baltimore’s first win was against the White Sox.

— Random stat: all-time leaders in sacrifice flies:
128- Eddie Murray
127- Cal Ripken Jr

— Last week, basketball star Steph Curry got a contract extension for 2026-27 that is worth $62.59M, for that one season.

This year, the Oakland A’s entire payroll is $62.57M. For the whole team.

— In 2021, the Angels drafted 20 pitchers; no position players, just 20 pitchers, that’s how committed they were/are to improving their mound presence.

Angels 3, Mariners 2
20-year old Caden Dana made his MLB debut Sunday, gave up two runs in 6 IP, got the win in a solid performance. Dana was drafted in 2022, but he has flown thru the Angels’ farm system, and may be in the big leagues to stay now.

— P Jordan Wicks got a win pitching for the Cubs in Washington; he threw five innings, gave up a run, but he didn’t walk anyone, or strike anyone out. Really unusual to get a pitching win as a starter and not strike anyone out.

— This weekend was the deadline for teams to add players on waiver deals and have them be eligible for the postseason. Kansas City Royals added three players:

OF Tommy Pham, OF Robbie Grossman, 1B Yuli Gurriel, all older players who can hit.

Phillies 3, Braves 2 (11)
Nick Castellanos knocked in all three runs for the Phillies.
Braves lead the Mets by a game for the last Wild Card slot in the NL

Phillies/Braves are done playing each other in the regular season.

— If the baseball playoffs started today (they do not):
NL: Phillies, Brewers, Dodgers. Wild Cards: Diamondbacks, Padres, Mets
AL: New York, Guardians, Astros. Wild Cards: Orioles, Twins, Royals

Quote of the Day
“Last year, I was in the worst mental space I’ve been in since I’ve been in the league. If I’m not in a good space, obviously that’s not the best for me. So that’s when things had to start shaking out.”
Texans WR Stefon Diggs, talking about why he left Buffalo after last year

Wednesday’s quiz
In the movie Someone to Watch Over Me, Tom Berenger is a New York City cop assigned to protect a woman who witnessed a murder. What well-known actress played the witness?

Tuesday’s quiz
In the history of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Jameis Winston has the most passing yards.

Monday’s quiz
In the history of the Houston Astros, Craig Biggio has scored the most runs.

Wednesday’s Den: Mid-week musings…….

— Milwaukee Brewers’ SS Willie Adames hit his 29th home run on his 29th birthday Monday, as the Brewers beat St Louis. Adames also hit his 13th 3-run homer of the season, tying Ken Griffey Jr (1996) for the most 3-run homers in a season.

Adames has homered in five straight games, leading Milwaukee to a 10-game lead in NL Central.

— Baltimore Orioles were -455 against the hapless White Sox Monday, the biggest betting favorite in any major league game this season.

Orioles won 13-3; White Sox have now lost 12 games in a row overall, and have lost Chris Flexen’s last 20 starts, which is an all-time record, breaking the previous mark, which was set way back in 1909.

— Mets’ TV announcers are pushing SS Francisco Lindor for MVP; he’s reached base in his last 31 games, which reminds me of baseball’s most underrated record.

In 1949, Ted Williams reached base in 84 straight games, which is the all-time record; no one ever talks about this, but it is an awesome record. Williams had a .490 on-base %age that year. In 1941, he had a .553 on-base %age. Amazing.

Boston College 28, Florida State 13
Eagles were 9-16 on third down, Florida State 3-13.
BC outrushed the Seminoles, 263-21.

Florida State is just third team in last 45 years to start a season 0-2, when they were a double digit favorite in both games:

1978 Notre Dame lost to Missouri and Michigan
2007 Michigan lost to Appalachian State and Oregon.

— They have 2:00 warnings in college football now; one of the over-educated morons who run the sport finally figured out that if they had 2:00 warnings, they could run 10 more minutes of commercials and make a boatload of extra money. Go figure.

Weird thing is, they don’t called it “2:00 warning” they call it “2:00 timeout”

“There is a new two-minute timeout. We’ve been asked not to call it a warning.” Rece Davis said on TV Sunday night.

— How football has changed over the years:

From 1971-73, Miami Dolphins played in three straight Super Bowls; in those three games, Miami threw a TOTAL of 41 passes.

Chiefs beat San Francisco 25-22 in last year’s Super Bowl; Patrick Mahomes threw 46 passes in that game. Brock Purdy threw 38.

— In case you were wondering, 17 NFL teams play their home games on artificial turf, 15 play their home games on natural grass.

— Famous birthdays, September 4th:
Wendell Tucker, 81
Kevin Stacom, 73
Khandi Alexander, 67

Mike Piazza, 56
Ione Skye, 54
Scott Tolzien, 37

Adam Duvall, 36
JJ Hickson, 36
Andres Gimenez, 26

Phillies 10, Blue Jays 9
Toronto led 6-1 in the first inning.
Kyle Schwarber went 5-6 with 3 homers, 6 RBI
Schwarber’s 3-run tater was aa game-winning in 9th inning.

Schwarber’s box score line was 6-4-5-6…….last time a major leaguer had a 6-4-5-6 game, with three home runs, was the great Dave Winfield, in 1991.

Braves 3, Rockies 0
Chris Sale tossed seven shutout IP.

This will be the 6th year in a row Colorado will finish win a win %age under .460, all with Bud Black as manager; the last major league team to have six straight losing years like that, under the same manager, was in 1934-43, the Philadelphia A’s under Connie Mack.

Diamondbacks 8, Giants 7
Randal Grichuk hit two homers, now has 199 career home runs.
Arizona has won its last seven road games.
Giants drew a season-low 23,545 fans at home.

Dodgers 6, Angels 2 (10)
Mookie Betts hit a 3-run homer in 10th inning.
Angels walked Shohei Ohtani intentionally before Betts’ home run.

Pirates 5, Cubs 0
Cubs scored total of 3 runs losing to Pittsburgh the last two nights.
Last week, Cubs scored 41 runs in a 3-game sweep at Pittsburgh.
Rookie Paul Skenes needed 100 pitches to get thru five shutout IP.

Rangers 7, Bronx 4
New York led 4-1 in 8th inning.
Wyatt Langford hit a walk-off grand slam for Texas.
It was the Rangers’ third walk-off win in their last four games.

A’s 3, Mariners 2
Seth Brown had a walk-off single in ninth inning.
A crowd of 3,924 saw the A’s sixth walk-off win this season.
Hogan Harris tossed three shutout IP in relief for Oakland.

Who threw the first no-hitter in Arizona Diamondbacks’ history?

Wednesday’s quiz
In the movie Someone to Watch Over Me, Tom Berenger is a New York City cop assigned to protect a woman who witnessed a murder. Mimi Rogers played the witness.

Tuesday’s quiz
In the history of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Jameis Winston has the most passing yards.

Thursday’s Den: NFL notes, thoughts with the season starting tonite…….

How last 20 defending Super Bowl champs did in Week 1 the next season; 15 of the last 16 opened at home:
2003: Buccaneers (+3) W17-0 @ Philadelphia
2004: Patriots (-3) W27-24 vs Indianapolis
2005: Patriots (-7.5) W30-20 vs Oakland
2006: Steelers (-1) W28-17 vs Miami
2007: Colts (-5.5) W41-10 vs New Orleans
2008: Giants (-4.5) W16-7 vs Washington
2009: Steelers (-6.5) W13-10 vs Tennessee
2010: Saints (-5) W14-9 vs Minnesota
2011: Packers (-5) W42-34 vs New Orleans
2012: Giants (-5) L17-24 vs Dallas
2013: Ravens (+7.5) L27-49 @ Denver
2014: Seahawks (-5.5) W36-16 vs Green Bay
2015: Patriots (-7) W28-21 vs Pittsburgh
2016: Broncos (+3) W21-20 vs Carolina
2017: Patriots (-8) L27-42 vs Kansas City
2018: Eagles (-1) W18-12 vs Atlanta
2019: Patriots (-5.5) W33-3 vs Pittsburgh
2020: Chiefs (-9) W34-20 vs Houston
2021: Buccaneers (-8) W31-29 vs Dallas
2022: Rams (+2.5) L10-31 vs Buffalo
2023: Chiefs (-4.5) L20-21 vs Detroit
(11-7-3 ATS, 0-3 ATS last three years)

— 17 of the 32 offensive coordinators are in new jobs this season; makes it difficult to handicap Week 1, not much idea what to expect.

— Steelers brought in Russell Wilson AND Justin Fields this year, as they totally re-made their QB room. Wilson is 124-79-1 with a Super Bowl ring, but he was 17-27 the last three years and he will be 36 years old in November.
Fields is 10-28 as an NFL starter, heading towards suspect more than prospect. Will they use him in goal line/short yardage situations?

— Pittsburgh OC Arthur Smith was the Falcons’ head coach the last three years, going 7-10 all three seasons, so they fired him; Steelers open up in Atlanta Sunday.
Think that game is a little personal for Smith?

— Deshaun Watson has already gone thru two years of his guaranteed, five-year $46M/year contract, but he’s only played in 12 of 34 games for the Browns so far. Cleveland went 11-6 last year, with four different QB’s earning a win- that isn’t sustainable- they need Watson to play like a QB who deserves $46M a year.

— Eagles started 10-1 last year, then lost six of their last seven games, then changed both of their coordinators— it came out that QB Jalen Hurts and coach Nick Sirianni aren’t exactly the best of buddies, which puts the focus on new OC Kellen Moore, who spent eight of the last nine years with division rival Dallas.
This is a franchise that let Andy Reid/Doug Peterson walk; is Sirianni on thin ice?

— Aaron Donald retired; when a team loses one of the best defensive players ever, it puts their defense in question, especially with a new defensive coordinator (Chris Shula).

Famous birthdays, September 5th:
William Devane, 85
Billy Kilmer, 85
Michael Keaton, 73
Willie Gault, 64
Dennis Scott, 56
Austin Corbett, 29
Jarren Duran, 28
Steven Kwan, 27
Mac Jones, 26

— Jets’ QB Aaron Rodgers tore his achilles on the 4th play last season; his health is obviously a big key as the Jets try to make the playoffs for the first time since 2010. Jets have five prime-time games and a Europe game in their first nine contests; someone in the league office thinks Gang Green is a contender.

— Chargers QB Justin Herbert battled a plantar fascia injury all summer; he was in a walking boot for two weeks. Chargers recently traded for Taylor Heinicke to back up Herbert; Heinicke is 13-16-1 as an NFL starter.

— Last five years, Buffalo Bills are 58-24 in regular season, only 5-5 in playoff games; Bills have problems with the salary cap these days, the way a lot of contending teams do, so their roster may be a little thinner this season than it has been.

— It is difficult for me to process that Bill Belichick, Pete Carroll are no longer NFL coaches; did they suddenly become incompetent? Hopefully Carroll will surface on TV somewhere; with his enthusiasm, he’d be a great teacher on TV.
Belichick seems like he is kind of boring; hopefully I’ll be wrong about that, but we’ll see.

— Should rookie QB’s start right away? Patrick Mahomes didn’t start until the last game of his rookie year; watching for a while can be a help.
Bears/Commanders are going with rookie QB’s right away; we’ll see how that works out.

— How last 20 Super Bowl losers did in Week 1 the following season:
2003: Raiders (+3) L20-25 @ Tennessee
2004: Panthers (-3) L14-24 vs Green Bay
2005: Eagles (-1) L10-14 @ Atlanta
2006: Seahawks (-6) W9-6 @ Detroit
2007: Bears (+7) L3-19 @ San Diego
2008: Patriots (-16) W17-10 vs Kansas City
2009: Cardinals (-5) L16-20 vs San Francisco
2010: Colts (-1.5) L24-34 @ Houston
2011: Steelers (+1) L7-35 @ Baltimore
2012: Patriots (-5) W34-13 @ Tennessee
2013: 49ers (-5) W34-28 vs Green Bay
2014: Broncos (-7.5) W31-24 vs Indianapolis
2015: Seahawks (-3.5) L31-34 OT @ Rams
2016: Panthers (-3) L20-21 @ Denver
2017: Falcons (-6.5) W23-17 @ Chicago
2018: Patriots (-6.5) W27-20 vs Houston
2019: Rams (-1.5) W30-27 @ Carolina
2020: 49ers (-7) L20-24 vs Arizona
2021: Chiefs (-5.5) W33-29 vs Cleveland
2022: Bengals (-7) L20-23 OT vs Pittsburgh
2023: Eagles (-3.5) W25-20 @ Philadelphia
(5-16 ATS, 3-3 ATS last six years)

— Cardinals @ Buffalo (-6.5, 47.5)
— Patriots @ Cincinnati (-8.5, 40.5)

Quote of the Day
“Being perfect is not about that scoreboard out there. It’s not about winning. It’s about you and your relationship with yourself, your family and your friends. Being perfect is about being able to look your friends in the eye and know that you didn’t let them down because you told them the truth…….”
Billy Bob Thornton, Friday Night Lights

Friday’s quiz
In the movie Invincible, the Eagles beat the Giants in Week 2 of the 1976 season; who played QB for the Giants in that game?
Hint: He played in a Super Bowl, for a different team

Thursday’s quiz
Randy Johnson threw the first no-hitter in Arizona Diamondbacks’ history.

Wednesday’s quiz
In the movie Someone to Watch Over Me, Tom Berenger is a New York City cop assigned to protect a woman who witnessed a murder. Mimi Rogers played the witness.

Friday’s Den: Random stuff, with the weekend here…….

Chiefs 27, Ravens 20
Ravens were on 10-yard line at end of game, failed to score.
QB Jackson threw for 273 yards, ran for 122 more.
Ravens’ first drive: 11 plays, 70 yards. TD drive took 6:46
Baltimore had only one other TD on their last nine drives.

KC won despite being minus-2 in turnovers, and outgained, 452-353
Mahomes threw for 291 yards; WR Rice caught seven passes for 103 yards; Last 8 years, Chiefs are 6-2 ATS in Week 1.
Last 22 years, defending Super Bowl champ is 12-7-3 ATS in Week 1 the next year.

— Chiefs have now won six of their last seven games against Baltimore.

— With the loss Thursday, Ravens’ QB Lamar Jackson drops to 13-3 ATS as an NFL underdog.

— Most career rushing yards by a quarterback:
6,109- Michael Vick
5,628- Cam Newton
5,380- Lamar Jackson
5,307- Russell Wilson

— NFL is heading towards having a 20-week (18-game) regular season with two byes for each team, one that will start on Labor Day weekend, with the Super Bowl on Presidents Day weekend. Should happen when the next TV contract comes up.

— Movie of the Day: Invincible (2006)- Based on the true story of Vince Papale, a 30-year-old bartender from Philadelphia who overcame long odds to play for the NFL’s Eagles in 1976.

Mark Wahlberg plays Papale, Greg Kinnear plays Dick Vermeil; Elizabeth Banks, Michael Nouri and Michael Rispoli are also in this movie.

Coach Vermeil is a stickler for details; in the locker room scenes where the players are getting ready for the games, the real names/numbers are on their jerseys.

These days, Vince Papale’s son is a wide receiver in the UFL.

This is a very good movie, especially if you like football.

— Back in 1976, teams played six freakin’ exhibition games before the season started; now they only play three.

— The first 2-point conversion in the NFL happened 30 years ago, in 1994, when Cleveland P/QB Tom Tupa scored on a fake PAT for 2 points, against the Bengals. Clever play.

Coach of the Cleveland Browns that day was Bill Belichick.

— Famous birthdays, September 6th:
Ron Boone, 78
Jane Curtin, 77
Kevin Willis, 62

Idris Elba, 52
Eric Zeier, 52
Jerry Blevins, 41

Mitch Moreland, 39
John Wall, 34
Mark Andrews, 29

— Phillies DH Kyle Schwarber had a game this week where he went 5-6 with three home runs and a double. He had six RBI and the game-winning home run, one of the best games ever by any hitter in the big leagues.

Who had the best game ever?

May 23, 2002, playing for the Dodgers in Milwaukee, RF Shawn Green went 6-6, with four home runs and 7 RBI. 19 total bases in one game is still a record today; tough one to beat.

— Giants’ TV broadcaster Duane Kuiper was a good ballplayer, lasted 12 years in the major leagues, batted 3,754 times, but he only hit one home run in all those at-bats.

August 29, 1977, Kuiper hit only big league home run, off the White Sox’ Steve Stone.

47 years later, Kuiper and Stone are both still broadcasting on TV, Kuiper for the Giants, Stone for the White Sox.

— San Francisco Giants signed 3B Matt Chapman to a 6-year, $151M contract extension; he is 31 years old, but he’s been a durable player who is an excellent fielder and has a .778 OPS this year.

Tigers 4, Padres 3
Trailing 3-0, Parker Meadows hit a dramatic grand slam with two outs in the 9th inning.
Last time a Detroit player hit a go-ahead grand slam with two strikes and two outs in the 9th inning was Alan Trammell, way back in 1988.
