NBA roundup: George rescues Thunder in win vs. Timberwolves
December 1, 2017

OKLAHOMA CITY -- The Oklahoma City Thunder's troublesome trend of letting second-half leads disappear looked like it was going to show itself again.

The Minnesota Timberwolves cut a double-digit Thunder lead to one possession with less than a minute to play, but Paul George hit two free throws with 5.2 seconds to play as the Thunder closed out a 111-107 win Friday night at Chesapeake Energy Arena.

George had 36 points and Oklahoma City center Steven Adams had 27.

Andrew Wiggins' 3-pointer with 9.8 seconds to go had Minnesota as close as it had been since the first quarter, but unlike the Timberwolves' last trip to Oklahoma City -- when Wiggins banked in a game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer -- the Thunder put this one out of reach.

Heat 105, Hornets 100

MIAMI -- Josh Richardson scored a career-high 27 points to lead Miami over Charlotte.

Dion Waiters finished with 19 points and Wayne Ellington scored 14 points as the Heat overcame a 15-point first-quarter deficit.

Miami took the lead for good and secured the victory with nine unanswered points late in the fourth quarter. Goran Dragic's short jumper with 2:23 remaining in the period began the surge putting the Heat ahead 97-96.

Jazz 114, Bucks 108

SALT LAKE CITY -- Donovan Mitchell scored a career-high 41 points and Alec Burks added 24 to help Utah rally past New Orleans.

Derrick Favors chipped in 18 points and 11 rebounds for Utah as the Jazz won their fifth straight.

New Orleans had no way to slow Mitchell down after Anthony Davis exited with an apparent leg injury in the opening minute of the fourth quarter. Davis had to be helped off the court and did not return. He finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds.

Kings 107, Bulls 106

CHICAGO - Zach Randolph scored 25 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, Bogdan Bogdanovic scored 19 points and Garrett Temple finished with 13 as Sacramento was victorious on the road.

Willie Cauley-Stein also had 10 points for the Kings, who handed the Bulls their eighth straight loss.

Bogdanovic capped the victory by splitting a pair of free throws in the closing seconds before Jerian Grant hit a 3-point field goal at the buzzer as the Bulls suffered their second one-point loss in as many nights.

Spurs 95, Grizzlies 79

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- LaMarcus Aldridge scored 22 points and Rudy Guy added 18 to lead San Antonio. The Spurs extended the Grizzlies' losing streak to 10 games, the longest in the NBA this season.

Marc Gasol had 16 points to lead the Grizzlies and Ben McLemore scored a season-high 14. Chandler Parsons added 12.

The Spurs (15-7), who beat Memphis 104-95 Wednesday night in San Antonio, pulled away from the Grizzlies in the fourth quarter and led by as many as 28 points down the stretch.

Warriors 133, Magic 112

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Klay Thompson scored 27 points and hot-shooting Golden State led from start to finish.

Kevin Durant scored 25 points and made 10 of 14 shots, but he was ejected with 4:52 remaining for cursing at an official following his final basket.

Steph Curry had 23 points and 10 assists. Jordan Bell had 16 points. Draymond Green scored 12 points, including back-to-back 3-pointers in the second period.

Wizards 109, Pistons 91

WASHINGTON -- Washington outscored Detroit 35-15 in the third quarter and evened its record on the season without All-Star John Wall.

Markieff Morris scored a season-high 23 points and Otto Porter had 17 for the Wizards, who had lost five of seven games. That includes two of the last three without Wall. The point guard was shut down on Nov. 25 after receiving injections in his left knee to help relieve inflammation.

Tobias Harris scored 15 points for the Pistons. Detroit had won three in a row.

Raptors 120, Pacers 115

TORONTO -- DeMar DeRozan scored 26 points and added five assists and five rebounds to lead Toronto.

It was the third win in a row for the Raptors and the second straight loss for the Pacers who got 36 points, seven rebounds and six assists from Victor Oladipo.

The Raptors took a five-point lead into the fourth quarter and expanded it to 13 nearing the midway point of the period.

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here??..

13) When someone throws their Christmas tree out on the front lawn on December 1st, there is a pretty good chance that person is moving soon.

Thats how reporters were clued in that Jimbo Fi$her was bolting Florida State for the greener pa$ture$ of Texa$ A&M. You mock my dollar signs? Fi$her got $75M guaranteed for ten year$.

Seminoles need to beat UL-Monroe Saturday to go to a bowl; Fi$her is gone, DL coach Odell Higgins is the interim coach for Saturday and if they win, the bowl game.

12) So now Oregon?s Willie Taggert is the favorite for the Florida State job; FSU would be his third job in three years- he went from South Florida to Oregon last year.

If Taggert bolts Oregon, the Ducks would have their third coach in three years in 2018.

11) Then there is Tennessee, which still hasn?t hired a football coach and now they also have to hire a new athletic director. Pretty soon they also may need a new chancellor.

Good luck hiring a quality coach when the jackasses on Twitter have veto power over which coach gets hired, which is what happened earlier this week with the Greg Schiano debacle.

10) Interesting story on the TheMMQB.com on how the Buffalo Bills have a different player stand in front of the team every week and talk about what motivates him and what people have been the driving forces in their lives.

It allows players to get to know their teammates better and hopefully bonds them tighter as a team. An unusual approach; if the Bills make the playoffs, more teams will do it.

9) Six Sutter brothers played in the NHL; they combined to score 2,936 points, which is the NHL record for most points scored by a family.

Two Gretzky brothers played in the NHL; Brent Gretzky had one goal, three assists. Wayne Gretzky scored the rest of the family?s 2,861 points.

8) Sounds like major league baseball might add expansion teams in Portland/Montreal, go to 32 teams, four geographically-based divisions with a 156-game schedule.

7) Charlie Hoffman made 12 birdies Friday, shot a 63 and leads the Hero World Challenge; I?m only telling you because ESPN won?t report anything except what Eldrick Woods shoots. Guy makes 12 birdies out of 18 holes, it deserves some publicity.

6) Shohei Ohtani has until December 22 to sign with a major league team; there are reports from a Japanese newspaper that the Padres are one of his final five teams. Ohtani wants to hit and pitch in the majors and there are reports he wants to play on a team that doesn?t already have a Japanese player on it? no idea why.

5) Purdue 80, Maryland 75? NFL referee Gene Steratore worked this game; wonder if he has the Ravens? game in Baltimore Sunday- would make his travel simpler.

4) Grambling 64, Georgia Tech 63? Awful loss for the Yellow Jackets; Grambling was ranked #338 before this game. Grambling had lost 63 games in a row against Power 5 teams, dating back 21 years. Yikes.

3) USC 31, Stanford 28? Wow, Sam Darnold has an interesting decision ahead of him after the Trojans? bowl game; go play pro football and get rich, or stay in college and prepare for the NFL for one more season? If the Browns go 0-16, I?m guessing he stays at USC.

2) One of the themes of Moneyball was that Billy Beane ?wanted to change the game? as far as how baseball front offices did their jobs.

Looks like he?s accomplished his goal; he?s turned front offices against the manager?s job and turned it into a middle-manager, button-pusher type that they think almost anyone can do.

Bronx Bombers named Aaron Boone manager, someone who has never managed in the major leagues before. You really think managing a baseball team in New York City is an entry-level job? The amount of media scrutiny that goes on? A first-timer is a good choice?

I could care less if the Bronx Bombers ever win another game; just seems to me that firing Joe Girardi for someone who is a rookie manager is an incredibly bad idea.

1) Derek Jeter is doing a hell of a job as Marlins? owner; his latest fiasco (from CBS Sports):

?Miami Marlins fired a veteran scout a few days after he underwent colon cancer surgery. What?s worse, the scout received the phone call to learn of his dismissal while laying in the hospital waiting on a kidney transplant.?

Classy, great people skills; how much money could the scout possibly be making?

Trading Giancarlo Stanton in a salary dump will be Jeter?s next move; because they?re dumping salary, the Marlins will trade a guy who hit 59 homers and get very little back, in way of players.

Irving helps Celtics knock off Suns 116-111
December 2, 2017

CLEVELAND (AP) LeBron James scored 34 points, including seven in the final 1:22, and the Cleveland Cavaliers beat the Memphis Grizzlies 116-111 on Saturday night for their 11th straight victory.

Memphis has lost 11 in a row, including three since David Fizdale was fired Monday and replaced by interim coach J.B. Bickerstaff.

James, the reigning NBA Player of the Month, also had 12 assists. Kevin Love added 20 points and 11 rebounds for Cleveland.

The Grizzlies trailed 91-72 late in the third quarter, but rallied all the way to a tie at 109 on Dillon Brooks' 3-pointer with 2:10 remaining. James' basket in the lane gave Cleveland the lead.

After Tyreke Evans missed a 3-pointer, James drove the lane, scored and converted the three-point play after being fouled by Brooks with 34 seconds left.

Brooks made two free throws, but James dribbled for several seconds on Cleveland's next possession and hit a jumper from the top of the key for a five-point lead with 5 seconds to go.

Evans had 31 points and 12 assists for Memphis. Marc Gasol scored 27 and passed 10,000 career points.

CELTICS 116, SUNS 111

BOSTON (AP) - Kyrie Irving had a key 3-pointer and a driving basket in the closing two minutes, helping Boston beat Phoenix.

Irving finished with 19 points, leading a balanced attack for Boston. Jaylen Brown and Marcus Morris each scored 17 points, Jayson Tatum had 15 and Al Horford added 14 points and 11 assists.

Devin Booker scored a season-high 38 points for Phoenix in his first game at TD Garden since he put up 70 against the Celtics on March 24. T.J. Warren had 19 points, and Tyson Chandler added 14 points and 18 rebounds.

Phoenix cut a 17-point deficit to 105-103 on Chandler's dunk late in the game. But Irving responded with a 3 from the right wing on the next possession, and his spinning shot off the backboard made it 112-106 with 29 seconds left.

76ERS 108, PISTONS 103

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Joel Embiid had 25 points and 10 rebounds and got the better of Andre Drummond down the stretch in a matchup of trash-talking big men to help Philadelphia beat Detroit.

Embiid drew the fifth and sixth fouls on Drummond and drew cheers as he waved goodbye to his fouled-out rival in between hitting four free throws to put Philadelphia ahead 100-95 with 2:35 left.

Robert Covington added 25 points, and Dario Saric had 17 points and hit a 3-pointer with 1:40 left to put the Sixers ahead 103-95.

Drummond had 14 points, 11 rebounds, six assists and five steals. Tobias Harris scored 27 points, and Reggie Jackson had 25 points for the Pistons. They trailed by 18 points early in the third quarter.

PELICANS 123, TRAIL BLAZERS 116

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - DeMarcus Cousins had 38 points and New Orleans overcame the absence of Anthony Davis to beat Portland.

E'Twaun Moore added 19 points for the Pelicans. Damian Lillard had 29 points and eight assists for the Blazers, and CJ McCollum added 17 points.

Davis, the Pelicans' top scorer with an average of 25.2 points, was ruled out against the Blazers because of a pelvis injury. An All-Star, Davis was injured in the fourth quarter against the Utah Jazz on Friday night and carried off the court because he couldn't put pressure on his legs.

MAVERICKS 108, CLIPPERS 82

DALLAS (AP) - J.J. Barea had 21 points and 10 assists, and Dallas beat Los Angeles for coach Rick Carlisle's 700th career victory.

Dallas made 16 of 35 3-point attempts and had five players score in double figures. Dirk Nowitzki went 5 for 5 from the long range on his way to 16 points, and reserve Devin Harris finished with 15 points.

Carlisle became the 18th coach in NBA history with at least 700 wins.

DeAndre Jordan had 14 points and 17 rebounds for the Clippers (8-13), who have dropped two in a row after winning three straight. Lou Williams scored 18 points.

NUGGETS 115, LAKERS 100

DENVER (AP) - Jamal Murray had 28 points, Will Barton scored 13 of his 16 points in the final 7:44, and Denver scored the game's final 15 points to beat Los Angeles.

Denver was without its starting frontcourt of Nikola Jokic, Paul Millsap and Wilson Chandler. Millsap is out several months after surgery on his left wrist, Jokic was in a walking boot after suffering a sprained left ankle Thursday, but Chandler (back) could return Monday.

Brandon Ingram led the Lakers with 20 points and Brook Lopez had 15 points. Lonzo Ball had nine points, nine rebounds and five assists.

HAWKS 114, NETS 102

NEW YORK (AP) - Dennis Schroder scored 24 points and reserve Luke Babbitt had 20, leading short-handed Atlanta past Brooklyn.

Atlanta had five players score in double figures in its third road win of the season. DeAndre Bembry had 12 points, and Isaiah Taylor and Taurean Prince each had 11.

The Hawks played without starting center Dewayne Dedmon and rookie John Collins due to injuries. Dedmon hurt his left leg Wednesday night and is expected to miss three to six weeks. Collins, the 19th pick in the June draft, injured his left shoulder Thursday night and will be out for two to three weeks.

Spencer Dinwiddie had 15 points for Brooklyn.

BUCKS 109, KINGS 104

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 33 points and Milwaukee held off Sacramento.

Antetokounmpo made 17 free throws and had 13 rebounds, Khris Middleton added 25 points and Eric Bledsoe had 18. Milwaukee beat the Kings 112-87 on Tuesday night in Sacramento.

Zach Randolph led the Kings with 22 points, and Buddy Hield added 19.

NBA roundup: Warriors pull away from Heat
December 3, 2017

MIAMI -- Stephen Curry scored 30 points to lead the Golden State Warriors to a 123-95 win over the Miami Heat on Sunday night at AmericanAirlines Arena.

Golden State, which is 3-0 on its current road trip, also got 24 points from Kevin Durant and 19 from Klay Thompson. Curry, who scored 16 points in the first quarter, made 11 of 16 shots from the floor, including 5 of 9 on 3-pointers.

However, the Warriors lost reserve guard Shaun Livingston with 6:24 left in the second quarter to an ejection. Livingston, who thought he was fouled on a shot attempt, leaned in to argue with the referee and appeared to accidentally bump heads, resulting in his immediate dismissal.

The Heat were led by point guard Goran Dragic, who broke a slump with 20 points on 7-for-10 shooting. In his three previous games, Dragic failed to score in double figures, averaging 6.7 points on 30 percent shooting.

Thunder 90, Spurs 87

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Russell Westbrook had his seventh triple-double of the season, leading Oklahoma past a San Antonio team depleted by injuries and other absences.

Russell finished with 22 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists but committed seven turnovers. Steven Adams added 19 points and 10 boards for the Thunder.

Dejounte Murray led the Spurs with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Davis Bertans added 16 points and five blocks. Already without All-Star forward Kawhi Leonard, the Spurs sat forwards LaMarcus Aldridge and Rudy Gay, and guards Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili.

Timberwolves 112, Clippers 106

MINNEAPOLIS -- Jimmy Butler scored a season-high 33 points, including 20 in the fourth quarter, as Minnesota recovered and held on to beat Los Angeles.

Karl-Anthony Towns had his league-leading 19th double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds and Taj Gibson added 20 points and 11 rebounds for Minnesota, which surrendered the lead in the fourth before Butler came to the rescue.

Austin Rivers scored 30 points, tying a career best with seven 3-pointers, for the shorthanded Clippers. DeAndre Jordan had 17 points and 12 rebounds for Los Angeles, which is without four injured starters in Blake Griffin, Patrick Beverley, Danilo Gallinari and Milos Teodosic.

Magic 105, Knicks 101

NEW YORK -- Nikola Vucevic scored 34 points and Orlando grabbed an early 17-point lead en route to just its second win in the last 12 games.

Evan Fournier had 20 and Jonathan Simmons added 16 as all five Magic starters scored in double figures. Orlando's starting lineup accounted for 95 of the team's 105 points.

Minus Kristaps Porzingis and Tim Hardaway Jr., their top two scorers, the Knicks turned to Michael Beasley, who had 21 points. Courtney Lee had 19 points and Enes Kanter totaled 18 points and 16 rebounds to lead New York.
