NBA roundup: Towns, Timberwolves topple Suns
November 26, 2017

MINNEAPOLIS -- Karl-Anthony Towns had 32 points and 12 rebounds, and Jimmy Butler chipped in with 25 points as the Minnesota Timberwolves held on for a 119-108 win against the Phoenix Suns on Sunday.

Towns recorded his league-leading 16th double-double, and Andrew Wiggins scored 21 points with a season-high four 3-pointers for Minnesota, which survived another strong shooting night from an opponent. Phoenix shot 50.6 percent from the field and was 13 of 26 from 3-point range despite playing without leading scorer Devin Booker.

Taj Gibson had 16 points and a season-high 14 rebounds for the Timberwolves, who had lost three of their previous four games. Minnesota is off to its best start since 2005-06 when it also started 12-8.

Mike James scored a career-high 26 points off the bench and TJ Warren added 18 for the Suns, who have lost three in a row. Phoenix got 61 points from its bench.

Heat 100, Bulls 93

CHICAGO -- Goran Dragic scored 24 points, including 14 in the fourth quarter, and Wayne Ellington finished with 19 points as Miami defeated Chicago.

Miami won its third straight game as James Johnson finished with 15 points to go along with 11 points and 10 rebounds from Hassan Whiteside and 10 points off the bench from Kelly Olynyk. Tyler Johnson rounded out Miami's balanced scoring attack with 10 points.

The Bulls, who have lost five straight, were led by Jerian Grant, who scored 24 points. Denzel Valentine scored 14 points and had 13 rebounds for Chicago, which also got 15 points from Justin Holiday and 11 apiece from rookie Lauri Markkanen and Bobby Portis.

Nets 98, Grizzlies 88

Monday's Tip Sheet
November 26, 2017

Game of the Night ? Lakers at Clippers ? 10:35 PM EST

The battle of Los Angeles commences for the second time this season as the Clippers (7-11 SU, 7-11 ATS) return from a five-game road trip. After losing the first three contests to extend their skid to nine games, the Clippers ended that cold spell by beating the Hawks and Kings. Blake Griffin knocked down the go-ahead jumper with five seconds remaining to give L.A. a 97-95 victory at Sacramento on Saturday, but the Clips failed to cash as 4 ?-point favorites.

The Lakers (8-11 SU, 9-10 ATS) had their brief two-game winning streak halted at Sacramento last Wednesday, 113-102 as one-point underdogs. Luke Walton?s club has won five of its past seven games at Staples Center, even though this is considered a road contest. The Lakers are currently on a 4-1 run to the OVER, while allowing 109 points in four of their past five games.

In the first meeting on opening night, the Clippers routed the Lakers, 108-92 as 6 ?-point favorites. The Clippers limited rookie Lonzo Ball to three points on 1-of-6 shooting, as both teams shot 40% from the floor. Doc Rivers? squad captured nine of the past 10 meetings with the Lakers, while the Clippers have won 10 straight in the series as the home team.

Old vs. New

The Cavaliers own the oldest roster in the league (averaging 30.1 years old), while the 76ers possess the second-youngest roster (24.7). Cleveland (12-7 SU, 6-12-1 ATS) is hitting its stride by winning seven straight games, including a one-point home victory over Charlotte on Friday. However, the Cavaliers failed to cover as 5 ?-point favorites to drop to 0-9-1 ATS at home this season. Cleveland travels to Philadelphia, as the Cavs own a solid 5-1 SU/ATS record in its past six games away from Quicken Loans Arena.

The 76ers (11-7 SU, 14-4 ATS) have compiled the second-best ATS record in the league behind the Celtics so far, while looking to build on a three-game winning streak. Philadelphia continues a six-game homestand, as the Sixers have covered in each of the first four contests, including in a loss as an underdog to Golden State. The Sixers have cashed in seven of nine opportunities as a ?dog this season, while covering in both home losses to the Cavaliers last season.

Eastern Duel

The Celtics and Pistons had some legendary playoff series in the late 80?s, but haven?t had much of a rivalry over the years. The two squads are currently sitting in first place in their respective division one-fifth of the way through the season. Detroit (12-6 SU, 12-5-1 ATS) picked up a solid comeback victory at Oklahoma City on Friday, 99-98 by erasing a 10-point halftime deficit. The Pistons finished UNDER the total for the fifth straight game, including four of those UNDERS on the highway.

Detroit heads to Boston (18-3 SU, 17-3-1 ATS), who is coming off an impressive back-to-back sweep of Orlando and Indiana this past weekend. Although the opponents weren?t great, the Celtics rebounded from a loss at Miami that snapped a 16-game winning streak to blast the Magic, while overcoming a nine-point halftime hole in Saturday?s win at Indiana. The C?s begin a five-game homestand as Boston looks to continue its dominance of Detroit after capturing three of four meetings last season.

Texas Tussle

The Mavericks (5-15 SU, 7-13 ATS) have gotten off to a slow start this season, but Dallas has suddenly won three of its past four games. Rick Carlisle?s club is coming off an impressive victory over Oklahoma City on Saturday as six-point underdogs, 97-81. Dallas is currently on an 8-2 UNDER run, while holding three of its past four opponents to 94 points or less. The Mavs make the short trip to San Antonio, looking to avenge a 97-91 home setback to the Spurs earlier this month.

Point guard Tony Parker is expected to make his season debut for the Spurs (12-7 SU, 10-9 ATS) after missing the first month of the season with a quadriceps injury. San Antonio returns home after routing Charlotte on Saturday, 106-86 to win for the seventh time in the last 10 games. Gregg Popovich?s team has dominated as a home favorite this season by compiling an 8-1 SU/ATS mark with the lone loss coming to Milwaukee in mid-November.

Nothing but Nets

The expectations were low on Brooklyn (7-12 SU, 12-7 ATS) this season, but the Nets have turned a profit so far. Brooklyn is coming off its fifth straight cover in Sunday?s 98-88 triumph at Memphis as five-point underdogs. The Nets put together their best defensive effort of the season by limiting the Grizzlies to 40% shooting from the floor, while winning at Memphis for the second straight season.

The task toughens up on Monday with a trip to Houston (15-4 SU, 11-8 ATS), as the Rockets rallied past the Knicks, 117-102, but failed to cover as 18 ?-point favorites. Houston has won four straight since a home loss to Toronto on November 14, while sweeping the series from Brooklyn last season as both matchups sailed OVER the total.

Head-to-Head Matchups

-- The Magic and Pacers are meeting for the second time in a week as Indiana won at Orlando last Monday, 105-97 as 3 ?-point underdogs. The Pacers have captured five straight matchups with the Magic since the start of 2016-17, including a pair of double-digit victories at home last season.

-- The Blazers finish off a five-game road trip after rallying past the Wizards on Saturday. Portland heads to New York seeking its fifth victory in the last six contests, while the Knicks have covered eight straight games at Madison Square Garden. These two teams split a pair of meetings last season as each game finished UNDER the total.

-- The Warriors go for their seventh straight home win as Golden State hosts Sacramento. The Kings have lost nine consecutive road contests since beating Dallas on October 20, while dropping 15 of the past 16 matchups with the Warriors since the start of the 2013-14 season.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) Once the Memphis Grizzlies were back in the game, Marc Gasol thought he would be, too.

Yet, there was Gasol, still in his warmups, standing outside the huddle of players who coach David Fizdale would send back out for the closing minutes. The Grizzlies' leader in scoring, rebounds and assists never returned to the floor Sunday, and the Brooklyn Nets held on for a 98-88 victory that dealt Memphis an eighth straight loss.

''You take it personally,'' Gasol said, adding that he felt it was his duty to stay positive and support those on the floor.

But that didn't make it easier to take.

''Obviously, you get frustrated, and I did, and mad and start wondering,'' said Gasol, who even while sitting out the fourth quarter tied Tyreke Evans for the team lead with 18 points.

Memphis is in disarray. Besides the losing streak, the Grizzlies are playing without point guard Mike Conley, who is nursing a sore left Achilles tendon. Memphis is 0-7 without Conley in the lineup. Meanwhile, forward Chandler Parsons left the game after feeling tightness in his right knee during the first half and didn't return.

And now Gasol is unhappy.

The injuries and the losses have led to frustration. Gasol has been outspoken recently about playing as a team and trusting each other on defense. He has talked about the culture established during the Grizzlies' recent success and trying to maintain that atmosphere with a lot of new pieces this season.

Fizdale, in his postgame comments, downplayed keeping Gasol on the bench in the fourth, saying the reserves had cut into Brooklyn lead. He decided to see ''if that group could keep the momentum going, but it didn't work.''

He said if there was a problem from Gasol sitting in the fourth, they would address it, adding that it was ''nothing against him.''

''Sometimes when you take a risk, you may (upset) a player or two,'' Fizdale said. ''That's part of this position. I can own the decision and I have my reasons why. Winning is my only priority.''

Gasol spent a long time in front of his locker answering questions regarding the situation.

''I do not know the why,'' Gasol said of not playing down the stretch, later adding: ''It's a first for me, trust me, and I don't like it one bit. I'm more (ticked) than I can show and frustrated.''

He said being in competitive situations, such as the fourth quarter, is what fuels him. Not being there is part of the frustration.

''If I'm not on the floor, then I'm not valued,'' Gasol said. ''I'm sure (the coaching staff) knew that would hurt me the most.''

NBA roundup: Pistons halt Celtics' home winning streak
November 27, 2017

BOSTON -- The Detroit Pistons ended the Boston Celtics' eight-game home winning streak with a 118-108 victory Monday night in a battle of the teams with the two top records in the Eastern Conference.

Tobias Harris scored 31 points and Andre Drummond posted 26 points, a season-high 22 rebounds and six assists as the Pistons went on a late 13-3 run to put the game away.

It was the first meeting of the teams since the Celtics sent Avery Bradley to Detroit along with a second-round pick in exchange for Marcus Morris during the offseason. Bradley, welcomed back by the TD Garden crowd, and Morris both scored 13 points, Bradley adding five assists.

Detroit guard Reggie Jackson, who played his college ball at Boston College, had 20 points and seven assists in the win.

Cavaliers 113, 76ers 91

PHILADELPHIA -- LeBron James collected 30 points, 13 rebounds and six assists as Cleveland beat Philadelphia to win its eighth straight.

Dwyane Wade added 15 points off the bench for the Cavs, who owned a 57-30 advantage in bench points and limited the Sixers to 37.5 percent shooting, including 3-for-28 3-point accuracy. Cleveland shot 48.2 percent, including 40.5 percent (15 of 37) from beyond the arc.

Joel Embiid led Philadelphia, which saw a three-game winning streak end, with 30 points and 11 rebounds. Rookie sensation Ben Simmons was limited to 10 points and eight rebounds before leaving the game in the fourth quarter with a sprained right ankle.

Rockets 117, Nets 103

HOUSTON -- James Harden produced another breathlessly efficient scoring performance and Houston rode his hot hand to a victory over Brooklyn.

The Rockets extended their winning streak to five games behind Harden, who scored 37 points on 13-for-20 shooting while adding 10 rebounds and eight assists. He poured in 20 points without a miss in the first quarter as Houston took a 21-point lead it did not relinquish.

Clint Capela added 20 points for the Rockets, Ryan Anderson scored 13 and Eric Gordon 12. Chris Paul shot just 1 for 7 but had 14 assists without a turnover, six boards and two steals.

Pacers 121, Magic 109

INDIANAPOLIS -- Victor Oladipo scored 26 points and Bojan Bogdanovic added 22 as Indiana sent Orlando to its ninth consecutive loss.

Oladipo hit 11 of 14 shots, including 4 of 6 from 3-point range, and Domantas Sabonis chipped in with 19 points and eight rebounds for the Pacers. Indiana's Myles Turner scored 18 points, and Lance Stephenson matched his season high with 18 off the bench.

The Pacers sank 15 of 26 from 3-point range while the Magic were 16 of 41 on 3-pointers. Jonathon Simmons scored 21 points to lead six players in doubles figures for Orlando. Aaron Gordon and Nikola Vucevic each had 16 points. Vucevic added a team-high 12 rebounds.

Trail Blazers 103, Knicks 91

NEW YORK -- Damian Lillard had 32 points and Pat Connaughton added 17 as Portland defeated New York.

Kristaps Porzingis returned from a one-game absence and scored 22 points to lead the Knicks, who lost their third consecutive game. Tim Hardaway Jr. added 18 points for New York but shot just 6 of 18 from the field.

New York staged a furious rally in the fourth quarter, cutting Portland's lead from 26 at the start of the quarter to eight with under a minute left. The Blazers scored just six points in the first 10 minutes of the fourth quarter, but New York went cold and was unable to come any closer.

Spurs 115, Mavericks 108

SAN ANTONIO -- LaMarcus Aldridge scored a season-high 33 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for his eighth double-double of the year as San Antonio defeated Dallas.

Pau Gasol added a season-high 25 points for the Spurs. San Antonio point guard Tony Parker, who missed the first 19 games of the season because of a quad injury he sustained in the playoffs last season, returned to produce six points and four assists in 15 minutes.

Wesley Matthews and Dennis Smith Jr. led the Mavericks with 19 points apiece. J.J. Barea added 16 points, and Devin Harris and Harrison Barnes contributed 13 each for Dallas.

Inside the Paint - Tuesday
November 28, 2017

The seventh week of the NBA season tipped off Sunday with favorites going 2-1 on the hardwood but it was the underdogs that posted a 3-0 record against the spread. Brooklyn was the lone ?dog to win outright as it knocked off Memphis 98-88 on the road.

The setback was the eighth straight for the short-handed Grizzlies and it was also the last game for Memphis head coach David Fizdale. The team relieved him of his services on Monday after a 7-12 start and some pundits felt the termination was a little abrupt. If you ask gamblers, the Grizz were a league-worst 6-13 ATS and that?s not good enough in our industry.

Favorites went 5-3 SU on Monday but the points mattered again with underdogs managing to cover in two of the losses for a 5-3 ATS mark. The Cavaliers (+2) wire-to-wire 113-91 road victory over the 76ers was a wake-up call for folks hopping on ?The Process? and even though the Warriors were without Kevin Durant and Stephen Curry, you can?t dismiss Sacramento?s 110-106 road win over Golden State as a 12-point underdog (ML +700).

We have five games on Tuesday and below is my quick handicap.

Miami (10-9 SU, 7-10-2 ATS) at Cleveland (13-7 SU, 7-12-1 ATS)

The first matchup on the board could be the most intriguing as a pair of surging teams meet on NBATV at 7:05 p.m. ET. The Heat have won three straight and four of their last five games while Cleveland enters this game with an eight-game winning streak. The Cavaliers only opened as 3 ?-point favorites and that tells you what the oddsmakers think of their recent run and it should be noted that they?re just 4-4 ATS in those games.

Cleveland is also playing on no rest after beating Philadelphia last night and the Cavaliers have gone 0-3 both SU and ATS in that role this season. The offense has only averaged 98.3 points per game in those contests and that?s led to a 3-0 ?under? mark. I note that because Miami?s defense (98.8 PPG) is ranked third in scoring on the road and it?s won five of its last six as a visitor.

The Heat took three of four against the Cavaliers last season but LeBron James sat out two of the setbacks and when he suited up at home, they won by 30 points as 12-point favorites. Even if he plays tonight, it could be tough backing Cleveland knowing how poor it?s been at home for bettors (6-4 SU, 0-9-1 ATS). The Heat, surprisingly, have been a smarter investment on the road (6-4 ATS) than at home (1-6-2 ATS).

Washington (10-9 SU, 9-10 ATS) at Minnesota (12-8 SU, 8-10-2 ATS)

No overnight line was posted on this non-conference tilt due to injuries. Point guard John Wall (knee) is expected to miss two weeks for the Wizards while Timberwolves PG Jeff Teague (Achilles) has been tabbed ?questionable? for this game.

Washington has dropped four of its last five games, which includes last Saturday?s 108-105 home collapse to Portland as it was outscored 35-22 in the fourth quarter. Minnesota has gone 2-3 SU over its last five and it has burned bettors with a 0-4-1 ATS mark during this span. Last Wednesday?s 124-118 home win against Orlando was a tough beat if you had the Wolves (-7) considering they were outscored 38-18 by the Magic in the fourth quarter.

I would expect the T-Wolves to win this game but I?m hesitant to back them as favorites knowing they?ve gone 3-6 against teams above .500 and their record versus the Eastern Conference (3-5 SU, 1-6-1 ATS) is far from good.

Phoenix (7-14 SU, 8-12-1 ATS) at Chicago (3-15 SU, 8-9-1 ATS)

This matchup pits two teams headed to next year?s NBA Lottery and it?s hard to make a case for either squad. Chicago enters this game with the worst record in the league and Phoenix isn?t much better. No overnight number was posted due to the status of Suns shooting guard Devin Booker, who remains ?questionable? with a toe injury. If Booker doesn?t play, Chicago might close as the favorite and that would be just the second time (1-0 SU, 1-0 ATS) in that role this season. The Bulls have only played seven games at the United Center and they?ve gone 2-5 SU and 4-3 ATS.

Meanwhile, the Suns are 3-5 SU and 4-3-1 ATS on the road. The pair just recently played on Nov. 19 in the desert and Phoenix earned a 113-105 decision over Chicago as a 2 ?-point favorite. The ?over? (215 ?) barely connected and three of the last four in this series have gone to the high side.

Betting the total on this game isn?t an easy handicap. Phoenix (115.9 PPG) has the worst scoring defense in the league and that?s helped them produce the best ?over? (13-8) mark. However, Chicago has been a solid ?under? lean (11-7) especially at home (6-1).

Milwaukee (9-9 SU, 7-9-2 ATS) at Sacramento (6-14 SU, 8-10-2 ATS)

I?m not surprised the Bucks are favorites in this spot but the opener (-7) seems a little healthy for a team that?s 4-5 as a visitor this season and that includes a 2-2 record both SU and ATS when laying points. I doubt Bucks coach Jason Kidd looks at ATS numbers, but last season his team was a solid look (8-2 SU, 5-5 ATS) as road favorites.

Milwaukee is clearly deeper and more talented than Sacramento, but the Kings have been respectable at home (4-5 SU, 6-3 ATS) and they could have an extra bounce in their step after last night?s upset over Golden State. However, Sacramento is 0-3 (0-2-1 ATS) on no rest this season and it?s just 1-4 (2-2-1 ATS) after a win. Another glaring stat that makes me lean Milwaukee is based off Sacramento?s record vs. the East, which sits 1-7 and the seven losses came by an eye-opening margin of 24.5 PPG.

This series has been a stalemate the last three seasons with the two teams going 3-3 against one another and both teams have notched 2-1 records on the road during this span while the ?over? has gone 6-0.

Denver (11-8 SU, 8-11 ATS) at Utah (9-11 SU, 10-10 ATS)

These teams met in their season opener on Oct. 18 and Utah captured a 106-96 win over Denver as a 2 ?-point home favorite. The Nuggets were in complete control of this game but they ran out of gas late and were outscored by 19 points in the second-half. That?s been the theme in this series with Denver dropping its last six visits to the Jazz from Salt Lake City.

The line (Jazz -1 ?) is in the same neighborhood tonight and you can make an argument both ways. Despite not having center Rudy Gobert, the Jazz have played a tad faster and that?s led to a 3-1 mark over their last four games. Playing at that pace would seem to favor Denver but it?s hard to get a read on Mike Malone?s team. They?ve been off since last Friday when they beat the struggling Grizzlies 104-92 at home but the Nuggets are 0-3 both SU and ATS in their last three games off victories. Plus the home and away numbers for Utah (8-4 SU, 8-4 ATS) and Denver (3-6 SU, 2-7 ATS) are tough to ignore. However, that opening line makes me lean to the visitor tonight.

Despite watching the ?under? go 6-1 in the last seven meetings between the pair I would give the ?over? (206 ?) a good look as well. This is the highest total posted in this series since 2012 and the oddsmakers are starting to adjust to Utah?s revamped style. The Jazz have picked up the pace with Gobert out and they?re taking a lot more 3-pointers as well. Denver?s defense (110.2) hasn?t been great on the road and I would expect both teams to get over the century mark tonight. ESPN will provide national coverage of this game at 10:05 p.m. ET.

NBA roundup: James ejected, but Cavs win
November 28, 2017

CLEVELAND -- Kevin Love scored a season-high 38 points, LeBron James was tossed from the game, and Dwyane Wade put a hurting on his old team in the Cleveland Cavaliers' 108-97 win over the Miami Heat on Tuesday.

The Cavs, who led the game by as many as 34 points, have won nine straight for their longest regular-season winning streak since Jan. 15-Feb. 5, 2015. The run began after they started the year 5-7.

Love added nine rebounds and shot 14 of 17 from the foul line in 26 minutes.

James was ejected with 1:59 left in the third quarter for arguing a non-call with referee Kane Fitzgerald. James screamed at Fitzgerald for not calling a foul against Hassan Whiteside on James' drive to the hoop.

James, who was ejected for the first time in his career, finished with 21 points, 12 rebounds, six assists and five steals.

Wade, who like James once starred with the Heat, scored 17 points off the Cleveland bench.

The Cavs set a season high with 75 points in the first half, and Love's 32 points were tied for the most by an opponent in a half in Miami history.

Dion Waiters led the Heat with 21 points.

Wizards 92, Timberwolves 89

MINNEAPOLIS -- Otto Porter Jr. scored 22 points, including the go-ahead jump shot with 25 seconds remaining, to give Washington a come-from-behind win.

Porter scored 17 of his points in the second half as Washington erased a 13-point deficit and won for the second time in six games. Leading scorer Bradley Beal was held to eight points on 2-of-11 shooting, but the bench was pivotal with the Wizards (11-9) missing John Wall for the second straight game due to an injured knee.

Karl-Anthony Towns had 20 points and 17 rebounds for his league-leading 17th double-double for the Timberwolves (12-9). Making his second NBA start in place of injured Timberwolves point guard Jeff Teague, Tyus Jones had season highs of 12 points and seven assists.

Suns 104, Bulls 99

CHICAGO -- Devin Booker scored 33 points and TJ Warren added 25 as Phoenix snapped a three-game losing streak.

Tyler Ulis finished with 14 points for the Suns (8-14), who built a 15-point lead in the fourth quarter and then had to hold on to beat the Bulls for the second time in nine days.

Alex Len grabbed 18 rebounds for the Suns to go along with 13 points.

Justin Holiday led the Bulls with 25 points, and Kris Dunn scored 24 points for Chicago (3-16), which dropped its sixth straight game.
