Irving scores 47, Celtics beat Mavs for 16th straight win
November 20, 2017

DALLAS (AP) Kyrie Irving scored 10 of his season-high 47 points in overtime as the Boston Celtics rallied once again from a double-digit deficit to beat the Dallas Mavericks 110-102 on Monday night and extend their winning streak to 16 games.

The Mavericks led by as many as 13 points in the fourth quarter, but as they have several times during their winning streak, the Celtics stormed back.

The winning streak ties the fourth-longest in Celtics history.

Boston tied the game at 96 when Irving stole the ball from Dirk Nowitzki and fed Jayson Tatum for an alley-oop layup that hung on the rim for a full second before dropping through.

Irving scored his team's first six points of overtime. Then after Jaylen Brown gave Boston a 104-102 lead with a jumper with 1:39 to play, Irving went to work on Yogi Ferrell, backing him down and drawing contact on a lay-up with 48.5 seconds to play. Though Irving missed the free throw to keep the score 106-102, Dallas never got closer.

CAVALIERS 116, PISTONS 88

DETROIT (AP) - LeBron James scored 16 of his 18 points in the first quarter, and Cleveland made 11 3-pointers in the first half in its rout of Detroit.

Cleveland led 73-46 at halftime thanks to an overwhelming shooting performance, an indication that Detroit's stay atop the Central Division might not last much longer. The Pistons still lead the Cavs by a game, but Cleveland has won five straight and scored at least 110 points in eight of its last nine.

The Cavaliers led 27-22 when James went to the bench late in the first quarter. By the time he came back in, it was 50-30. Cleveland's reserves ended up outscoring Detroit's 26-8 in the first half.

The Cavs shot 62 percent from the field in the first two quarters and 11 of 17 from 3-point range. They finished the game 16 of 33 from beyond the arc. Cleveland led 101-62 after three, and the top players for both teams had plenty of time to rest in the final period.

PELICANS 114, THUNDER 107

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Anthony Davis had 36 points and 15 rebounds, and New Orleans rallied after DeMarcus Cousins' ejection to beat Oklahoma City.

Cousins had 18 points and nine rebounds before he was called for a flagrant foul on Russell Westbrook with five minutes remaining in the third quarter.

Cousins raised his elbows near Westbrook's face after grabbing a rebound, and the Thunder guard dropped to the floor holding his head. Westbrook remained in the game and finished with 22 points, 16 rebounds, 12 assists and three steals. However, Westbrook also missed 13 of 19 shots.

New Orleans trailed 76-72 when Cousins was ejected but surged ahead soon after with an 11-3 run during which Jameer Nelson, E'Twaun Moore and Darius Miller each hit 3s, with Nelson's banking in from near half-court as the shot clock expired.

Jrue Holiday scored 18 points for New Orleans, which snapped a two-game skid.

SPURS 96, HAWKS 85

SAN ANTONIO (AP) - LaMarcus Aldridge had 22 points and 11 rebounds, and San Antonio held off Atlanta.

Atlanta lost its 20th straight game in San Antonio, a skid spanning 20 years.

Manu Ginobili had 16 points and Danny Green had 14 for the Spurs, who have won four of five. Kyle Anderson added 13 points, 10 assists and six rebounds in his 17th start in place of injured All-Star Kawhi Leonard.

Aldridge powered the Spurs past the pesky Hawks, scoring 12 points with six rebounds in the fourth quarter.

Aldridge saved the ball from going out of bounds after blocking Kent Bazemore's shot and then raced downcourt for a driving, one-handed dunk that gave San Antonio a 78-71 lead with nine minutes remaining.

Green hit consecutive 3-pointers to stretch the lead to 90-79 with 3 minutes remaining.

76ERS 107, JAZZ 86

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Ben Simmons scored 27 points, a fired-up Joel Embiid added 15 points and 10 rebounds despite a sore knee, and Philadelphia beat cold-shooting Utah.

Embiid skipped the morning shootaround because of pain his surgically-repaired left knee. But he posted his seventh double-double and got under Utah's skin in the fourth quarter.

After swatting away rookie Donovan Mitchell's layup, Embiid turned and said something to the fallen Mitchell, who got up and shoved Embiid to the floor. Mitchell drew a technical foul.

Embiid got up and motioned to the fans, who started to chant ''MVP'' and ''Trust the Process,'' the team's mantra during a lengthy rebuild. Embiid got a standing ovation as he exited with 1:50 left in Philadelphia's second win in five games.

Mitchell scored 17 points on 6 of 19 shooting, Rodney Hood added 13 while making 5 of 17 shots, and the Jazz shot 35.3 percent from the field in losing for the eighth time in 10 games.

WIZARDS 99, BUCKS 88

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Bradley Beal scored 23 points to lead Washington over Milwaukee.

Beal helped the Wizards separate from the Bucks with a personal 7-0 run late in the third quarter. Washington then outscored Milwaukee 13-4 to start the fourth, building an 86-70 advantage.

The win snapped a two-game skid for the Wizards, who were playing on back-to-back days for the first time this season.

Milwaukee has lost two consecutive games to fall back to .500 at 8-8 after rattling off a four-game winning streak following the trade for Eric Bledsoe.

Kelly Oubre Jr. added 18 points off the bench for the Wizards, and John Wall scored 15 after missing a game with knee pain. Otto Porter Jr. had 12 points and 11 rebounds, and Marcin Gortat finished with 10 points with 15 rebounds.

Giannis Antetokounmpo led the Bucks with 23 points but was 8 for 21 from the field.

KNICKS 107, CLIPPERS 85

NEW YORK (AP) - Kristaps Porzingis scored 25 points and New York extended Los Angeles' losing streak to nine games.

Porzingis outplayed a frustrated Blake Griffin and helped the Knicks snap a 10-game skid in the series with their first victory over the Clippers in five years.

Doug McDermott added 16 points for the Knicks, including a 3-pointer that swung the momentum for good midway through the third quarter.

Griffin scored 21 points but shot just 6 for 17, picked up a technical foul and fouled out with 4:46 remaining. The Clippers (5-11) still haven't won since Nov. 1 at Dallas, when they improved to 5-2.

Patrick Beverley returned after missing five games with a sore right knee and had nine points and six rebounds. But the Clippers are still without fellow guard Milos Teodosic and the rest of their backcourt play was mostly dismal.

PACERS 105, MAGIC 97

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) - Victor Oladipo had 29 points, nine rebounds and seven steals to lead Indiana past Orlando, the Pacers' fourth straight win.

Oladipo, who played his first three NBA seasons in Orlando, and Bojan Bogdanovic combined for 40 points in the second half, 14 of them during a 16-3 third-quarter run that put the Pacers in command.

Bogdanovic scored 24 of his 26 points in the second half.

Nikola Vucevic had 25 points and 13 rebounds for the Magic, who lost their fifth straight. Aaron Gordon had 13 points and 12 rebounds.

The Magic finished with 22 turnovers and shot 33 percent in the second half to fall below .500 for the first time this season.

HORNETS 118, TIMBERWOLVES 102

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Dwight Howard had 25 points and 20 rebounds, and Charlotte beat Minnesota.

Howard, acquired in an offseason trade from Atlanta, was 8 for 10 from the field and 9 of 14 at the foul line, where he has struggled all season. He outplayed Timberwolves big man Karl-Anthony Towns, who had 18 points and 12 rebounds as Minnesota lost on back-to-back nights.

Howard, the NBA's active leader in 20-20 games with 49, became the first Hornets player to accomplish the feat since Al Jefferson in 2013.

Frank Kaminsky provided a huge spark off the bench, scoring nine of his 24 points in the fourth quarter. He shot 9 of 15 overall, including 4 of 5 from beyond the arc.

In an effort to come back from a double-digit deficit in the fourth quarter, the Timberwolves repeatedly sent Howard to the foul line. He responded by shooting 6 of 10 to help seal the win.

TRAIL BLAZERS 100, GRIZZLIES 92

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - C. J. McCollum scored 24 points and Damian Lillard added 21 points as Portland sent Memphis to its fifth straight loss.

Shabazz Napier added 16 points, while Noah Vonleh finished with 11 points and 18 rebounds for Portland, which won its second straight and fourth in the last five.

Mario Chalmers led Memphis with 21 points, while Tyreke Evans finished with 20. Marc Gasol had 19 points and 12 rebounds, but was 7 of 20 from the floor, part of the Grizzlies shooting 38 percent for the game, and 27 percent from outside the arc.

The teams were tied at 80 with 6:47 left after Gasol split a pair of free throws. But Jusuf Nurkic, who had 10 points, converted a 3-point play and put the Trail Blazers ahead for good.

Portland controlled the boards 60-35, including 15 on the offensive glass.

NBA notebook: Ray Allen claims he was 'catfished'
November 21, 2017

Former two-time NBA champion and 10-time All-Star Ray Allen claims he was stocked and "catfished" by a male stranger online who he says communicated with him while pretending to be several different women.

Bryant Coleman told an Orlando court on Monday that he was the one being stalked by Allen. On Tuesday, Allen asked the court in a filing to throw out the case.

Allen's attorney, David Oscar Markus, said in a statement that Allen pursued legal action in the case to end threats made to him and his family. The filing claims Coleman has continually harassed Allen.

--Cleveland Cavaliers coach Tyronn Lue has been questioned throughout the season about the playing time of superstar LeBron James.

After James logged a season-low 27 minutes in Cleveland's 116-88 rout of the Detroit Pistons on Monday, Lue was questioned again -- and he didn't seem to like it.

"I hear about that all the time," Lue said. "I played with Michael Jordan when he was 39; he played 37 minutes a night. Karl Malone was 37, played 38 minutes a night, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson, Kobe (Bryant). Everybody's built different. If you're one of the greats, sometimes you've got to play, sometimes you get rest like tonight."

James, who turns 33 next month, leads the NBA in both total minutes played and minutes per game.

--Golden State Warriors forward Kevin Durant told reporters that facing his former team, the Oklahoma City Thunder, is no big deal.

"It's just a regular game for me now," the reigning NBA Finals MVP said on Tuesday, one day before the Warriors (13-4) visit Oklahoma City (7-9). "I learned how to tune out the crowd, I learned how to tune out the (expletive)."

Durant tuned out the Thunder last season when he scored 40 points in his return to Chesapeake Arena.

The 29-year-old former league MVP participated in a full practice on Tuesday but is considered questionable to play versus the Thunder because of an ankle injury.

Wednesday's Tip Sheet
November 21, 2017

Game of the Night: Warriors at Thunder ? 8:05 PM EST

Old teammates Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook meet up for the first time this season as Golden State concludes its four-game road trip at Oklahoma City. The Warriors (13-4 SU, 7-10 ATS) have failed to cover on this swing in spite of coming off high-scoring victories at Philadelphia and Brooklyn on a back-to-back. In fact, Golden State has gone 0-4 ATS since a 6-0 ATS run, but Steve Kerr?s squad has won nine times in this stretch with the only loss coming at red-hot Boston last Thursday.

The Thunder (7-9 SU, 7-9 ATS) suffered its fifth consecutive road loss in Monday?s 114-107 setback at New Orleans as three-point favorites. Oklahoma City led 17-2 early before New Orleans rallied back as Westbrook posted a triple-double (22 points, 16 rebounds, 12 assists) in spite of the Thunder falling to 0-7 SU/ATS on the road this season to Western Conference opponents. At home, OKC has won two of three games against the West, although those victories have come against below .500 teams (Clippers and Mavericks).

In Durant?s first season with the Warriors, Golden State pulled off the four-game season sweep of Oklahoma City, as all four victories came by double-digits. Since OKC jumped out to a 3-1 series lead over Golden State in the 2016 Western Conference Finals, the Warriors have won seven consecutive meetings with the Thunder, including each of the past three visits to Chesapeake Energy Arena.

Shooting for Seventeen

The Celtics (16-2 SU, 15-2-1 ATS) began the season at 0-2 and things looked bleak following Gordon Hayward?s gruesome leg injury. However, Boston has figured out how to put things together and not lose since by posting an incredible 16-game winning streak, while covering 14 times in this stretch. The most recent triumph came in Monday?s 110-102 overtime victory at Dallas to barely cash as 6 ?-point favorites. Boston improved to 9-1 ATS away from TD Garden thanks to 47 points on 16-of-22 shooting from guard Kyrie Irving, while overcoming a double-digit deficit for the third straight game.

Boston heads to Miami for the second time this season as the Celtics edged the Heat in the first matchup last month, 96-90. Miami (7-9 SU, 5-9-2 ATS) looks to rebound from a 25-point home loss to Indiana on Sunday as 5 ?-point favorites, its third setback in the past four games. The Heat have failed to cash one ticket at American Airlines Arena this season by going 0-6-2 ATS, while dropping eight straight meetings with the Celtics since 2015.

Roll the Ball Out

The Rockets and Nuggets can light up the scoreboard on any given night as the two Western Conference squads meet up at Toyota Center. Houston (13-4 SU, 10-7 ATS) swept the four-game series from Denver last season, but the Nuggets covered in both losses at Toyota Center. The Rockets return home following a pair of road blowouts over the Suns and Grizzlies, while winning eight of their past nine games overall.

The Nuggets (10-7 SU, 7-10 ATS) won its first road game since October 29 as Denver knocked off Sacramento, 114-98 on Monday as five-point favorites. Paul Millsap sat out with a wrist injury as the Nuggets? forward will have surgery and miss at least three months. Denver has struggled in the underdog role this season by going 1-3 SU/ATS, while putting together a 3-5 SU and 3-6 ATS record away from Pepsi Center.

Quick Change

Ten days ago, the Cavaliers (10-7 SU, 6-10-1 ATS) sat below the .500 mark, but Cleveland has rebounded with five consecutive victories. The Cavs are fresh off their biggest blowout of the season, a 116-88 rout of the Pistons on Monday as 1 ?-point favorites, as Tyronn Lue?s squad posted 73 points in the first half. Cleveland returns to Quicken Loans Arena to face Brooklyn, looking to avenge a 112-107 setback at Barclays Center on October 25 as 7 ?-point favorites.

The Nets (6-10 SU, 9-7 ATS) have actually been a solid team to back on the highway of late by compiling a 3-1 ATS record in their last four road games. Brooklyn heads to Cleveland off consecutive covers, while cashing as 11 ?-point underdogs against Golden State on Sunday, 118-111. In the last three visits to Cleveland, the Nets have been listed as 17, 16 ?, and 17-point underdogs, but opened as 11-point ?dogs on Wednesday.

Buzz Thrill

The Hornets (7-9 SU, 7-8-1 ATS) have built a nice home-court advantage by winning six of their eight games at Spectrum Center this season. Charlotte pulled away from Minnesota on Monday, 118-102 to easily cash as 2 ?-point favorites, as the Hornets seek their second three-game winning streak of the season on Wednesday against Washington. The Hornets struggled against the Wizards last season by dropping three of four matchups against their division rivals, but the lone victory came in Charlotte.

The up-and-down season continues for the Wizards (10-7 SU, 9-8 ATS), who snapped a two-game skid in Monday?s 99-88 triumph at Milwaukee. Washington has finished UNDER the total in nine consecutive contests, while allowing seven of those opponents to 96 points or less. The Wizards have performed well on the highway recently by winning four of their past five away from Capital One Arena, while owning a strong 5-1 ATS mark as a road underdog this season.

Head-to-Head Matchups

-- The 76ers continue a six-game homestand as the Blazers invade Philadelphia. Since a 1-2 ATS start, the Sixers have covered 11 of their past 13 games, while cashing in each of the past four matchups with Portland. The Blazers have hit the UNDER in eight straight games, while winning four of five overall.

-- It?s been a rough go for the Clippers, who look to snap a nine-game losing streak as Los Angeles travels to Atlanta. The Hawks have lost six of their past seven contests, while going 0-2 ATS since a 5-1 ATS run. Los Angeles swept Atlanta last season, while winning in each of the past two visits to Philips Arena.

-- Toronto has owned New York the last few seasons by capturing eight straight meetings, including a 107-84 blowout last Saturday at Air Canada Center. The Raptors seek their fifth straight win at Madison Square Garden dating back to February 2016, as Toronto is riding a 5-0 SU/ATS hot streak. The Knicks have cashed in seven consecutive home games, while winning six times in this stretch.

-- The two teams sitting under .500 in the Southwest division hook up in Memphis as the Grizzlies host the Mavericks. Dallas dropped a heartbreaker to Boston in overtime on Monday as one of its three victories this season came against Memphis at home on October 25. The Grizzlies look to snap a five-game losing streak, while not winning yet on their current four-game homestand (0-3 SU/ATS).

-- Orlando is also suffering through a five-game skid, as the Magic embark on a four-game road trip that begins in Minnesota. The Wolves have also stumbled of late by losing in a back-to-back set against Detroit and Charlotte, but Minnesota pulled off the two-game sweep of Orlando last season.

-- The Spurs have taken six of the last seven meetings with the Pelicans as San Antonio heads to New Orleans. However, the Spurs have failed to cover in five straight road contests, while the Pelicans have struggled as a home favorite this season at 1-4 ATS.

-- Milwaukee has swept Phoenix in each of the past two seasons, including a 137-112 blowout in the Valley last season. The Bucks start a four-game Western swing, but are 0-3 ATS in their last three tries in the favorite role. The Suns are seeking their first three-game winning streak of the season after beating the Lakers and Bulls.

-- The Bulls won a pair of low-scoring affairs against the Jazz last season, as Chicago heads to Utah with no rest. Utah returns home following a 1-3 road swing, as the Jazz have lost four of their past five games in Salt Lake City.

-- The Kings are 1-5 since beating the Thunder and 76ers at home as the Lakers travel north on I-5 to face Sacramento. Los Angeles has lost two of three times on the road with no rest, while splitting four games with Sacramento last season.

KD indifferent about facing old team

Golden State Warriors forward Kevin Durant told reporters that facing his former team is no big deal.

"It's just a regular game for me now," the reigning NBA Finals MVP said on Tuesday, one day before the Warriors (13-4) visit the Oklahoma City Thunder (7-9). "I learned how to tune out the crowd, I learned how to tune out the (expletive)."

Durant tuned out the Thunder last season when he scored 40 points in his return to Chesapeake Arena. The game marked his first contest back in Oklahoma City since spending eight seasons with the franchise that selected him with the second overall pick of the 2007 draft.

The 29-year-old former league MVP participated in a full practice on Tuesday and is considered questionable to play versus the Thunder.

"I don't know," Durant said when asked if he'll be able to play. "We'll see how it feels in the morning but right now, it feels good."

Durant sprained his left ankle during Saturday's 124-116 win against the Philadelphia 76ers. He sat out the next night in Golden State's 118-111 victory at Brooklyn.

Thunder star Westbrook still adjusting to new teammates
November 21, 2017

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) Russell Westbrook isn't focused on the fact that his Oklahoma City Thunder will face former teammate Kevin Durant and the Golden State Warriors on Wednesday.

Westbrook's mind is on the Thunder's early struggles. Oklahoma City entered the season with high hopes after the team added Paul George and Carmelo Anthony in trades. Despite the infusion of talent and Westbrook's still electric play, the Thunder have stumbled to a 7-9 start.

''It really don't matter who we have next, it's about us,'' said Westbrook, the reigning MVP. ''Regardless of what other teams do, when we play the way we're supposed to play for 48 minutes, it's hard to beat us. That's all I worry about is our team.''

Westbrook has been his usual self in many ways. He's averaging 20.1 points, 8.7 rebounds and 9.7 assists. After setting the single-season record with 42 triple-doubles last season, he leads the league with five this year.

But he is not dominating fourth quarters like he did last year, and the Thunder are losing the close games he so often willed them through with his scoring flurries. All nine of Oklahoma City's losses this season have been by nine or fewer points. Westbrook averaged 10 points per game in the fourth quarter last season; this season, that average is down to 5.4.

Thunder coach Billy Donovan knew Westbrook would have to give up some elements of his game to accommodate the new talent. Anthony is a 10-time All-Star who was the scoring champion in 2013. George is a four-time All-Star who was the face of the Indiana Pacers' franchise. Donovan said Westbrook is playing as hard as ever and he's had the right attitude during the adjustment process.

''I think Russell has done a really good job, just in terms of the sacrifices that he's tried to make to make the group better and to try and help our group,'' Donovan said.

Thunder center Steven Adams said Westbrook is trying his best to put the Thunder in position to win, but little things are getting in the way.

''He's doing a great job,'' Adams said. ''He's making the right decisions, from what I'm seeing. The plays that are set - it's not like he's doing anything crazy and deviating from the play. He's doing an amazing job.''

Still, Westbrook is shooting just 39.4 percent from the field, which would be a career low, and the Thunder are 21st in field goal percentage in a 30-team league. Donovan said Westbrook, Anthony and George are still figuring out where to get their best shots and how to take advantage of the space the other stars create.

''When you have three guys like Carmelo, Paul and Russ there together, you're going to have to do it through matchups, through who's open, through ball movement, through making the next best right decision,'' Donovan said. ''When you're unable to put the ball in the basket and you're not getting stops, the simplicity of it is it's hard to win games like that.''

Oklahoma City's goal is to get the stars playing together like Golden State did when they won the title last year. The Warriors are playing well together again this year, with Stephen Curry averaging 25.6 points, Durant averaging 24.9, Klay Thompson adding 20.1 and Draymond Green doing a little bit of everything. The Warriors lead the league in scoring and are off to a 13-4 start.

Westbrook doesn't expect Oklahoma City to keep struggling and noted that the Thunder have been one of the NBA's best defensive teams. He said he's encouraged that the team is in the game at the end so often, but disappointed in the losses and the execution at critical times.

''We know we have the talent,'' he said. ''That's always great, but you've got to put the work in and do what it takes to win games.''

Wednesday?s six-pack

? South Dakota State 80, Iowa 72? Rough week for Iowa in the Cayman Islands.

? Alabama 77, Tex-Arlington 76? Most fun game of the season for me so far.

? Chargers are playing on Thanksgiving for the first time since 1969.

? Oakland Raiders are first team in 83 years with zero INTs in their first ten games.

? Paxton Lynch will start at QB for the Broncos in Oakland Sunday- he will be the 48th QB to start an NFL game this year. Last year, 54 QB?s started games.

? Baylor 65, Creighton 59? Bluejays scored 100 Monday, 59 here. Baylor can defend.

***********************

Wednesday?s List of 13: Mid-week musings??.

Occasionally I take some grief from readers for not picking enough college basketball games on this site, but to me, this time of year has almost become like spring training in baseball; there is no way to gauge teams anymore without seeing them a play a little bit first. Have to study before you begin taking tests??.

Cal has a whole new team? There were up 18 on Wichita State, when they were a 19-point dog. Stuff happens this month that makes no sense, but I?m doing my best to sit here and make some sense of it, so when the picks do start showing up, they?re successful.

13) UNLV was 47-51 the last three years, but they?re 4-0 this season, with 15 points their closest win. Rebels haven?t been in NCAA?s since 2013- they play Utah tonight at T-Mobile Arena, a big game in Las Vegas, a big step up in class for the Rebels. Interesting game.

12) Missouri Valley Conference lost Creighton/Wichita State the last few years, and it has hurt them nationally. Right now, four teams are tightly bunched as the top-rated team in the Valley, but they?re all ranked between 92nd and 105th nationally.

Looks like a one-bid league, which will make their conference tournament? Arch Madness, the most important weekend of the season.

11) Patrick Ewing?s Georgetown Hoyas are 3-0 this season, against teams ranked 324-280-332. Hoyas have eight games left before Big East play starts- they host Richmond Saturday, play Syracuse Dec 16, but their other six pre-conference games are all against teams outside the top 300 in the country. Very, very soft pre-conference schedule for Georgetown.

10) Best 3-point shooting teams so far this young season:
Providence 54.4%, Tex-Arlington 51.1%, Arizona 50.9%, Portland 50%

9) Sun Belt Conference is on the rise; currently ranked as the #13 league, Sun Belt hasn?t finished a season this high since 2003, when they were ranked #11 in America. Lot of good teams, lot of really good athletes.

8) Siena lost 115-92 to 0-4 Bucknell Monday; Siena fans aren?t happy about this, but a closer look at Bucknell?s schedule explains some stuff:

Bucknell has played the #26 schedule in the country- they lost 93-81 at North Carolina, 80-78 at Maryland- they can play, and will be a big favorite to win the Patriot League this season. Bison are also the #64 team in America in terms of experience.

7) Similarly, Vermont lost 73-69 at Kentucky, an impressive loss for an America East team. two of Catamounts? three wins are against teams in top 125, both on a neutral floor. Vermont, Albany figure to battle it out for the America East championship.

6) Wake Forest/Pitt figure to trail the field in the ACC? Deacons are 1-4, with losses to Liberty and Drake. Pittsburgh is 1-4 with losses to Navy/Montana.

5) VCU has two players who were there when Shaka Smart was coach of the Rams three years ago; they?re on their third coach in four years, after Will Wade bolted to LSU last spring.

Has to be a little awkward in Maui this week, with VCU/LSU both there, and Wade coaching the Tigers now. VCU?s kids helped Wade get a pretty steep pay increase.

4) Nation?s most inexperienced teams, of leagues that we follow:
Kentucky-Duke-Alabama-VMI-Bowling Green.

3) Nation?s most experienced teams, of leagues that we follow:
Tex-Arlington, Drake, Tennessee Tech, Idaho, Missouri State

2) DePaul is in Chicago, where there are a ton of really good high school players, but the Blue Demons haven?t been able to cash in on their location.

Over last ten years, DePaul is 27-153 in conference games. 27, and. 153. Not good. Prognosis for this season isn?t a whole lot better, but the Blue Demons have a new arena, which hopefully can help persuade some local kids stay at home for college.

1) Texas A&M and Florida figure to challenge Kentucky at the top of the SEC; Aggies play Kentucky Jan 9, Feb 10- they play Florida Jan 2. The two Kentucky-Florida games are Jan 20 and March 3rd. If you took the school?s names off the uniforms, A&M seems like the best team, as of right now.

Go figure: The Celtics can't shoot - and can't lose, either
November 22, 2017

The Boston Celtics' story right now defies logic.

They spent the summer ripping up a team that was the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs last season. They won the Gordon Hayward sweepstakes and got to have the All-Star for all of five minutes before a gruesome injury ended his season. They started 0-2 and are 16-0 since.

It makes minimal sense.

Here's where it gets even odder: The NBA's best team right now, by far, can't shoot a lick.

The Celtics are interrupting this era of pace-and-space, go-go-go basketball for what might actually be considered a throwback idea. They're winning games - every game for more than a month - with defense and rebounding, both of which have been stellar and obviously compensate for Boston ranking 27th out of 30 teams in shooting.

Boston will try for its 17th straight win on Wednesday night in Miami.

''The streak doesn't mean anything to me,'' Celtics coach Brad Stevens said. ''Maybe it does to the guys in the room. But it's about finding ways to get better, and finding ways to get the job done.''

They're finding those ways now.

The Celtics shot 33 percent and beat Golden State, which doesn't happen. They haven't been outrebounded in any of their last 14 games. They've led at halftime in only three of their last 10 contests, but have been great at winning time - no team has outscored Boston by more than four points in a second half all season.

''Whether it be our first unit or our second unit, we demand excellence from one another,'' said Celtics star Kyrie Irving, who had 47 points in an overtime comeback win over Dallas on Monday and needed only 22 shots from the floor to get there.

Boston's record is so good, the shooting woes can (and perhaps should) get overlooked.

- The Celtics are shooting 43 percent this season; only Sacramento, Dallas and Chicago are worse.

- They're shooting 58 percent near the rim, the second-worst mark in the league.

- They're 18th in 3-point percentage and 25th in 2-point percentage.

And really, so what? All the other numbers show how the Celtics are winning.

Entering Tuesday, Boston was No. 1 in scoring defense (94.8 ppg), No. 2 in field-goal percentage defense (.429) and No. 3 in 3-point defense (.321). The Celtics have allowed 100 or more points only five times this season, the fewest in the NBA. They've held teams to 95 or fewer points 11 times - as many as the Pistons, Pelicans, Magic, 76ers, Nets, Cavaliers and Suns have combined.

So yes, defense does still matter.

---

CHANGES

Here's hoping people didn't overreact to some fast or slow starts. Things have changed quickly for plenty of teams, things changing for the better in some cases and for the worse in others.

A list:

Boston - started 0-2, now 16-2.

Cleveland - started 5-7, now 10-7.

Orlando - started 6-2 and 8-4, now 8-9.

Memphis - started 5-1, now 7-9.

Utah - started 5-3, now 7-11.

L.A. Clippers - started 4-0 and 5-2, now 5-11.

---

KD'S ANKLE

Warriors forward Kevin Durant isn't sure if he'll play Wednesday night when Golden State visits Oklahoma City, while he deals with an ankle injury.

He's past the whole KD-is-back-in-OKC angle either way.

''This is just a regular game for me now,'' said the former Thunder All-Star who is in his second season with the Warriors.

Whether Durant plays or not, the game will have plenty of star power. The NBA pointed out that the matchup could have seven reigning All-Stars, five members of USA Basketball's team that won gold at the 2016 Rio Olympics, and the winners of the last four MVP awards - Durant in 2014, Stephen Curry in 2015 and 2016, and Russell Westbrook last season.

---

THE WEEK AHEAD

Other than the streaking Celtics going for No. 17 and Warriors-Thunder on Wednesday night, here are some of the games to watch this week:

- Trail Blazers at Nets, Friday: A noon Eastern tipoff in Brooklyn means 9 a.m. in Portland. Get that Black Friday shopping done early, Rip City.

- Raptors at Pacers, Friday: Something about that Indiana air still works for Victor Oladipo. He's averaging 23 points for the surging Pacers.

- Knicks at Rockets, Saturday: New York has been one of the good stories this season, and a win in Houston would give the Knicks another boost.

- Lakers at Clippers, Monday: The Clippers started 4-0, and that's been long forgotten. They clearly need Danilo Gallinari back in the worst way.

- Heat at Cavaliers, Tuesday: It's still odd for the Heat to see Dwyane Wade as an opponent, and this is his first time facing them in Cavs colors.

---

STAT LINE OF THE WEEK

Joel Embiid, Philadelphia: These were video-game numbers - 46 points, 15 rebounds, seven assists and seven blocked shots in the 76ers' win at the Los Angeles Lakers on Nov. 15.

Heat beat Celtics 104-98 to end 16-game winning streak
November 22, 2017

MIAMI (AP) Goran Dragic scored 27 points, Dion Waiters had 26 with a pair of big 3-pointers in the final minutes and the Miami Heat held on to beat Boston 104-98 on Wednesday night, snapping the Celtics' 16-game winning streak.

Tyler Johnson scored 16 points for Miami, which had an 18-point lead cut to one in the final moments. The Heat shot 49 percent and outrebounded the Celtics 48-37.

Kyrie Irving scored 23 points for Boston. Jayson Tatum added 18, and Jaylen Brown and Marcus Morris each had 14.

The Celtics got down by 18 in the first half, which has been a very comfortable place for Boston this season. Boston had overcome 18-point deficits against Oklahoma City and Charlotte, a 17-point hole against Golden State, a 16-pointer against Atlanta and rallied from 13 down to win in Dallas this week.

The Celtics almost did it again.

Down by 14 midway through the fourth, the unflappable Celtics went on a 13-0 run in just about three minutes - getting to 91-90 when Smart made one of two free throws with 3:14 remaining.

Waiters decided that was close enough. His 3-pointer from the left wing bounced off the rim, then the top of the backboard, before falling to end Miami's scoreless drought. Waiters added another 3-pointer over Al Horford to make the lead seven, Hassan Whiteside had a big tip-in with 1:10 left and Miami would hang on from there.

THUNDER 108, WARRIORS 91

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Russell Westbrook scored a season-high 34 points and added 10 rebounds and nine assists to help Oklahoma City roll past Golden State.

Oklahoma City beat the Warriors for the first time since Kevin Durant left the Thunder to join the Warriors after the 2015-16 season. Golden State won all four meetings last season.

Westbrook said it was just another game in the buildup, but he didn't play like it. At one point in the third quarter, Westbrook and Durant went forehead to forehead and were called for double technicals.

Westbrook's new All-Star teammates came through. Carmelo Anthony had 22 points and Paul George 20.

The crowd booed Durant nearly every time he touched the ball. He finished with 21 points on 8-for-17 shooting. Stephen Curry scored 24 points for the Warriors.

CAVALIERS 119, NETS 109

CLEVELAND (AP) - LeBron James shook off a blow to the face and scored 23 points in the fourth quarter - including 18 straight for Cleveland - and the Cavaliers beat Brooklyn for their sixth straight victory.

James needed stitches in the third quarter to close a gash above his lip that drew blood. He punched back at the Nets in the fourth and finished with 33 points.

With the Cavs up 100-99, James began his one-man show with a pair of free throws. He dropped in a couple left-handed shots and then drained two 3-pointers - the last a step-back with 55 seconds left to give Cleveland a 118-107 lead.

James' solo performance enabled the Cavs to avenge a 112-107 loss in Brooklyn last month.

Kevin Love and Dwyane Wade added 18 points apiece for Cleveland.

Rondae Hollis-Jefferson scored 20 points for the Nets.

BUCKS 113, SUNS 107, OT

PHOENIX (AP) - Khris Middleton scored 40 points and Eric Bledsoe added 30 in his return to Phoenix, leading short-handed Milwaukee.

Devin Booker led the Suns with 23 points and hit a long 3-pointer as time expired in the fourth quarter to force overtime. But they had four of their season-high 29 turnovers in overtime and shot 1 for 8 in the extra period.

Booker missed a chance to tie it seven seconds left in the extra session, and Middleton made four free throws to seal the Bucks' ninth victory of the season.

Bledsoe was traded to Milwaukee on Nov. 9 in the deal that brought center Greg Monroe the Suns. Monroe had 22 points and 15 rebounds.

The Bucks played without Giannis Antetokounmpo and four other players.

ROCKETS 125, NUGGETS 95

HOUSTON (AP) - Trevor Ariza had a season-high 25 points in Houston's victory over Denver.

Ariza was 7 of 10 from 3-point range. Chris Paul had 23 points and 12 assists, and James Harden added 21 points, nine assists and eight rebounds in limited action.

The Rockets have won nine of last 10 games, and beat Denver for the fifth straight time after sweeping the series 4-0 last season.

Will Barton led Denver with 20 points.

76ERS 101, TRAIL BLAZERS 81

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Joel Embiid had 28 points, 12 rebounds and two blocks and fast-starting Philadelphia handled Portland with ease.

Coming off a 21-point victory over Utah on Monday night, the 76ers scored the game's first 16 points and held a double-digit lead most of the way.

Portland missed its first 13 shots before Shabazz Napier came off the bench and hit a jumper with 5:01 left in the first quarter. The Blazers never got closer than eight. It was the Blazers' lowest points total of the season, and the fewest that Philadelphia has allowed.

Damian Lillard had 30 points for Portland.

HORNETS 129, WIZARDS 124

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Dwight Howard had 26 points and 13 rebounds, including a key block at the end of regulation and a crucial offensive rebound in overtime, to help Charlotte beat Washington.

Kemba Walker and Jeremy Lamb each had 24 points for the Hornets, who overcame a nine-point fourth quarter deficit. The Hornets wrapped up a perfect three-game homestand.

John Wall had 31 points and 11 assists, and Bradley Beal added 22 points for the Wizards.

CLIPPERS 116, HAWKS 103

ATLANTA (AP) - Blake Griffin had 26 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists, Wesley Johnson scored a season-high 24 points and Los Angeles beat Atlanta to snapped a nine-game skid.

The Clippers had dropped 11 of 12, but they overcame a monthlong struggle of closing out opponents, taking the lead for good on a pair of free throws by Lou Williams with 4:11 left in the third quarter.

Los Angeles had out a season-high 30 assists.

Marco Belinelli had 20 points of the Hawks.

PELICANS 107, SPURS 90

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Anthony Davis had 29 points and 11 rebounds, Demarcus Cousins added 24 points and 15 rebounds, and New Orleans beat San Antonio.

Jrue Holiday scored 13 points and Darius Miller chipped in 13 on four 3-pointers for the Pelicans.

Pau Gasol had 17 points and LaMarcus Aldridge 16 in a largely frustrating night for San Antonio. The Spurs shot only 39.8 percent (35 of 88) and went 6 of 24 from 3-point range.

MAVERICKS 95, GRIZZLIES 94

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Harrison Barnes banked in a 30-footer at the buzzer to lift Dallas past Memphis.

Officials reviewed the play to make sure the shot got off in time. Memphis suffered its sixth straight loss after squandering an 18-point lead in the first half.

Barnes led the Mavericks with 22 points, nine of them coming in the fourth quarter to help Dallas thwart a late Memphis comeback. Dennis Smith Jr. finished with 17 points, and J.J. Barea had 10 points and 11 assists. Tyreke Evans led Memphis with 18 points.

TIMBERWOLVES 124, MAGIC 118

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Jimmy Butler tied a season high with 26 points, Taj Gibson scored a season-high 24, and Minnesota held off Orlando.

Jeff Teague had 22 points and 11 assists, and Andrew Wiggins added 20 points as all five starters scored in double figures to help the Timberwolves end a two-game slide.

Karl-Anthony Towns had 18 points and 13 rebounds for his 14th double-double, which tied DeMarcus Cousins for the league lead. Aaron Gordon had 26 points and nine rebounds for the Magic.

KNICKS 108, RAPTORS 100

NEW YORK (AP) - Tim Hardaway Jr. scored a career-high 38 points, including 12 during a 28-0 run in the third quarter that sent New York past Toronto.

Kristaps Porzingis added 22 points and 12 rebounds for the Knicks, who outscored the Raptors 41-10 in the third. Kyle Lowry scored 25 points and DeMar DeRozan had 18 for the Raptors.
