NBA roundup: James helps Cavs defeat Hornets
November 16, 2017

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- LeBron James scored 31 points and the Cleveland Cavaliers continued their mastery of the Charlotte Hornets with a 115-107 victory Wednesday night at the Spectrum Center.

Cleveland has won the past seven meetings and 11 of the last 12. James has a career record of 44-6 over the Hornets and Bobcats in his 15 seasons in the NBA. The Cavaliers won their third straight.

Cleveland also got 22 points and 10 rebounds from Kevin Love. Jeff Green scored 13, Kyle Korver 11 and J.R. Smith 10.

Michael Kidd-Gilchrist led Charlotte with 22 points and Kemba Walker scored 20. Nicolas Batum finished with 16 in his first game of the season after missing the first 12 because of elbow surgery as the Hornets dropped their fifth straight.

Timberwolves 98, Spurs 86

MINNEAPOLIS -- Karl-Anthony Towns had 26 points and 16 rebounds for his 12th double-double of the season, and Jeff Teague added 16 points and six assists as Minnesota defeated San Antonio.

Nemanja Bjelica added 11 points off the Timberwolves' bench, which outscored the Spurs' reserves 29-26 and keyed a second-quarter run to give Minnesota the lead after a sluggish start.

LaMarcus Aldridge had 15 points and 10 rebounds for San Antonio, which had won five of their previous six games. Pau Gasol added 13 points as the Spurs continue without injured Kawhi Leonard and Tony Parker.

Wizards 102, Heat 93

MIAMI -- John Wall provided 27 points and Bradley Beal added 26 to lead Washington over Miami.

Washington made 29 of 31 from the free throw line, breaking a string of five consecutive losses to the Heat. Miami made 16 of 19 free throws.

Hassan Whiteside had 14 points and 21 rebounds to lead the Heat. It was his third 20-plus rebound game of the season. Goran Dragic (21 points) and Dion Waiters (19) led Miami in scoring.

Bucks 99, Pistons 95

MILWAUKEE -- Eric Bledsoe scored eight of his 14 points in the fourth quarter, including four in the final minute, as Milwaukee won its fourth straight.

Bledsoe added six rebounds, eight assists, three steals and two blocks. All five Bucks starters scored in double figures, led by 27 from Khris Middleton. Giannis Antetokounmpo added 21.

Avery Bradley scored 28 points to pace the Pistons, whose five-game winning streak was snapped.

Pacers 116, Grizzlies 113

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Darren Collison scored a season-high 30 points as Indiana held on to defeat Memphis.

Victor Oladipo had 21 points with six rebounds, three assists and two blocks for Indiana. Bojan Bogdanovic scored 16 points and Domantas Sabonis contributed 13 points, six rebounds and four assists off the bench for the Pacers.

Pao Gasol finished with 35 points, 13 rebounds, five blocks and five assists for the Grizzlies. Tyreke Evans contributed 18 points, nine assists, six rebounds, and Chandler Parsons scored 13 for Memphis.

Raptors 125, Pelicans 116

NEW ORLEANS -- DeMar DeRozan scored 17 of his team-high 25 points in the third quarter and Toronto placed six other players in double figures in defeating New Orleans.

The Raptors won their sixth consecutive game over the Pelicans. Toronto also has defeated New Orleans in 14 of its last 17 meetings. Kyle Lowry scored 22 points and Jonas Valanciunas added 21 points for the Raptors.

The Pelicans were led by DeMarcus Cousins with 25 points and Anthony Davis with 19.

Knicks 106, Jazz 101

NEW YORK -- Tim Hardaway Jr. had 26 points and Kristaps Porzingis added 22 as New York rallied to defeat Utah.

Two days after squandering a 23-point lead to LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Knicks came back from a 12-point deficit against a Jazz squad missing its top post player in injured Rudy Gobert. Hardaway had 10 points in the fourth quarter.

Rodney Hood scored 27 points to lead the Jazz, who have lost for the fifth time in the last six games. Hood has been consistent in his new sixth-man role, with at least 16 points and three 3-pointers in each of his last three games.

Hawks 126, Kings 80

ATLANTA -- Dennis Schroder had 21 points and eight assists, and Dewayne Dedmon scored a career-high 20 points to go with 14 rebounds as the Hawks handed Sacramento its 11th straight loss in Atlanta.

It was the largest victory margin for Atlanta since a 141-97 victory over Detroit in March 1994. The Hawks, who have lost their first four home games, shot 63.3 percent overall and made 16 of 32 3-point attempts.

Zach Randolph scored 16 points and George Hill had 12 points as the Kings lost their eighth straight road game after winning their first away from Sacramento this season. The Kings have lost 16 of the past 18 games against Atlanta.

Thunder 92, Bulls 79

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Russell Westbrook had 21 points, five rebounds and seven assists as Oklahoma City won its third straight game.

Carmelo Anthony added 18 points and 11 rebounds for the Thunder, who led 58-34 at halftime.

Rookie Lauri Markkanen led the Bulls with 16 points and six rebounds. Chicago scored only seven points in the first quarter -- one from tying a franchise record for fewest points in a quarter -- while committing five turnovers.

Warriors out to stop streaking Celtics
November 15, 2017

BOSTON (AP) The Celtics like the kind of basketball they've been playing during their 13-game win streak.

They also know it could easily end on Thursday night when the defending champion Golden State Warriors visit the Garden.

Boston's prospects for the season took an obvious hit following Gordon Hayward's gruesome leg injury on opening night, but the Celtics have exceeded expectations thus far without him, becoming the first team in NBA history to win 13 straight after starting the season 0-2. Kyrie Irving has been a scoring force, while Jaylen Brown and rookie Jayson Tatum have taken advantage of their increased roles.

Toss in veteran Al Horford's consistent play and the recent return of offseason pickup Marcus Morris, and suddenly the preseason buzz that surrounded this team has returned.

Still, Horford laughed Wednesday at the notion that Thursday's game could be an NBA Finals preview.

''I'm sure that people are going to float that around,'' Horford said. ''But we understand we have a long ways to go. And it still is only November.''

Coach Brad Stevens said his biggest concern is making sure his team zeroed in on where it could improve during Wednesday's video study and walkthrough session.

''Otherwise, we'll really get exposed,'' Stevens said. ''There's a reason why they haven't played a lot of close games. And it's because they're awfully freaking good.''

Boston and Golden State split their two meetings last season, but Golden State was only at full strength for one of those games. The Warriors blew out the Celtics 104-88 last November in Boston, getting a combined 67 points from Kevin Durant, Klay Thompson and Stephen Curry. The Celtics beat the Warriors on the road in March when Durant was out with a knee injury.

The Warriors come in riding a seven-game win streak of their own. Coach Steve Kerr likes what he's seen of the new-look Celtics.

''They're motivated,'' Kerr said. ''This is a team that's been on the rise the last couple of years. ... They want to win a championship. And it looks like it.''

He said he relishes the opportunity to get early-season glimpses at potential challengers from the Eastern Conference. And he expects Boston to contend for years to come.

''It sure looks like Boston is the team of the future in the East,'' Kerr said. ''That looks like a team that is gonna be at the top of the East for a long time. Whether their time is now or in the future, that's to be determined.''

Stevens is more concerned about his team's present.

''The future's hard to predict and we've gotta stay in the moment to become the best version of ourselves,'' Stevens said. ''And we'll see what the future holds.''

Inside the Paint - Thursday
November 16, 2017

Even though we?re still in the middle of football season, the NBA will receive extra attention this Thursday. The betting slate will feature two teams with the best records in the league when Boston (13-2 SU, 12-2-1 ATS) hosts the defending champion Golden State (11-3 SU, 7-7 ATS) from TD Garden.

After losing All-Star Gordon Hayward to a freak ankle injury in its first game of the season, many pundits including myself wrote off Boston. Despite going down in the opening minutes, the Celtics were competitive but still dropped a 102-99 decision at Cleveland. One night later, Boston was playing on emotions at home and they had a solid Milwaukee team on the ropes. Unfortunately, they ran out of gas late in a 108-100 decision to the Bucks and fell to 0-2.

Fast forward nearly a month and Boston still hasn?t suffered a setback since that defeat to the Bucks. The Celtics have ripped off 13 straight wins and they?ve covered 11 of those games. Brad Stevens and company own the best record on the hardwood and also the top mark at the betting counter.

One week after listing Boston as a 15/1 betting choice to win the 2017-18 NBA Finals, the Las Vegas Westgate SuperBook pushed the club up to 40/1 odds. Their odds to win the Eastern Conference rose from 4/1 to 10/1.

This past Monday, the SuperBook have since readjusted their numbers on Boston and they?re back to 15/1 to capture the finals and 5/1 to win the East.

So who deserves the credit for the results in Boston?

While many would attribute the success to the offseason acquisition of point guard Kyrie Irving, that?s a lazy take when you realize that all of his numbers (21.6 PPG, 5.5 APG, 3.1 RPG) are down this season and the Celtics just beat the Hornets and Raptors without his services due to a facial injury.

Scott Cooley of BookMaker.eu told VegasInsider.com that Irving was a 12/1 choice to win this year?s NBA Most Valuable Player award and while those prop numbers aren?t available at this time, the offshore outfit would have him at 5/1. If Boston keeps this pace up, he should be in the running but I'm guessing James Harden captures the hardware this summer.

Some experts are putting stock into Stevens and while he?s highly regarded in coaching circles, it?s hard for me to credit a guy with a career 11-17 record in the playoffs just yet. Plus I?m not sure if you can pat a coach on the back for the improvement from second-year player Jaylen Brown (14.7 PPG) or the steady production from rookie Jayson Tatum (14 PPG, 5 RPG) so far. If anything, Stevens should be thanking general manager Danny Ainge.

Regardless of who deserves credit, the main reason for Boston?s success during the winning streak has been its defense. The club is holding opponents to a league-best 94.5 points per game, which is ridiculous considering how many teams push the pace in the NBA. Along with scoring, they?re also ranked first in field goal defense (42.9%) and they?ve done a great job of keeping teams off the free throw line (20.3 attempts, No. 7) as well.

That unit is going to be tested on Thursday against the Warriors, who lead the league in scoring (119.6 PPG), field goal percentage (51.9%), 3-point shooting (41.2%) and they?re third in free-throw percentage (83.1%) by a few decimals.

Oddsmakers at BookMaker.eu opened Golden State as a six-point home favorite and the number inched up to seven as of Thursday morning.

The Warriors bring a seven-game winning streak (6-1 ATS) into this tilt and on the road, they?ve gone 5-1 this season. Plus, it owns a 4-2 ATS mark in those games. They?ve covered their last four away games and all of those decisions were decided by double digits and that?s been a common theme for Golden State.

Golden State has only played in two games decided by three points or less and it?s gone 1-1 in those contests while Boston has posted a 3-1 mark in those tight scenarios.

Despite owning a 5-1 record versus the East this season, the Warriors are just 2-4 ATS in those games and that includes a non-cover in Monday?s 110-100 win over Orlando as a 12-point favorite. Boston is 4-0 versus the West and wins versus San Antonio and Oklahoma City should be noted.

The Celtics have been listed as underdogs five times (4-1 SU, 5-0 ATS) and this will be the second instance where they?re catching points at home. They stopped Toronto 95-94 this past Sunday and this was the victory with the aforementioned absence of Irving.

Even though Golden State has won seven of the past 10 meetings in this series, Boston has won two of the last three matchups which includes a split last season. Make a note that the Warriors ripped the Celtics 104-88 on the road last November and the Celtics avenged the loss in the Bay Area but Golden State was without All-Star Kevin Durant. Despite the losing record, the Celtics have been very profitable at 7-3 ATS against the Warriors during this span while total players have watched the ?under? go 8-2.

Thursday's total is hovering around 215 and that's the second lowest total that Golden State has seen this season. Also, Boston has had three games with totals listed at 215 or above and the 'under' is 3-0 in those contests. It shouldn't come as a surprise that Boston's defensive tendencies have helped the 'under' go 10-5 this season.

While the playoffs are many months away, we asked Cooley for guesstimated odds on possible matchups that his offshore outfit could offer for the Celtics against both the Cavaliers and Warriors at this time.

Potential Series Prices ? per BookMaker.eu
Cleveland -130 Boston +100
Golden State -240, Boston +215

A lot can happen between now and June but it?s very apparent that Boston has been adjusted at all major betting shops.

TNT will provide national coverage at 8:05 p.m. ET.

Houston (11-4 SU, 8-7 ATS) at Phoenix (5-10 SU, 6-9 ATS)

The late-night game in the NBA on Thursday takes place in the desert and no overnight numbers were sent out on this matchup but it?s clear that Houston will be a road favorite over a struggling Phoenix squad. Playing away from home hasn?t been an issue for the Rockets this season and VegasInsider.com Tony Mejia hit on their success in his Weekly Six-pack piece.

Mejia noted, ?They're 7-1 on the road (5-3 ATS) and will return to Memphis, site of that 103-89 Oct. 28 loss this Saturday. If they can defeat the Suns and Grizzlies on the road this week as likely favorites, they'll enter December having won 90 percent of their roadies.?

Houston is coming off its worse loss of the season on Tuesday, a 129-113 setback to Toronto as a 6 ?-point home favorite. The loss snapped a six-game winning streak for the Rockets and it was their worst defensive effort of the season.

The first month of the season for the Suns has been a rollercoaster and that description is a little subtle. After starting 0-3, the fired their coach Earl Watson and suspended their point guard Eric Bledsoe, who has since been traded to Milwaukee. They went on a bit of a run after shaking up the team with a 4-1 record and they covered all five of those games.

Since that hot spell, Phoenix has gone 1-6 both SU and ATS. The Suns own the worst scoring defense in the league (115.1 PPG) and they?re second to last in fouls per game, which often puts the opposition in the free throw bonus early.

If you?re taking the Suns tonight, you?re hoping for high percentage from the field because that?s the only way they have any chance to win yet alone cover. They just beat Minnesota 118-110 last Saturday as a 10-point home ?dog but they shot a blistering 53.5 percent from the field. Overall, the Suns have gone 2-4 SU and 3-3 ATS in the desert.

Houston has won all four meeting against Phoenix last season and they covered three of the wins. The ?over? cashed in every contest and the high side is on a 9-1 run in this series.

The Rockets are expected to get point guard Chris Paul back in the lineup after sitting out the last 14 games with a knee injury. It will be interesting to see the chemistry for Houston tonight but it?s a perfect situation for Paul knowing Phoenix has by far the least talented point guards (Mike James, Tyler Ulis) in the NBA.

Phoenix was sent out as an 11-point home underdog early this morning and the number has been climbing. The total is 228.

This game is expected to tip at 10:35 p.m. ET and TNT will provide national coverage.

At Replay Center, NBA refs far from the game but right in it
November 16, 2017

SECAUCUS, N.J. (AP) Tucked in the corner of the NBA's Replay Center, not far from about 100 screens showing NBA action, is Joe Borgia's office.

To the left of his desk sits a stack of takeout menus for local restaurants. On the floor behind his chair, boxes of snacks he purchased on a run to the nearby warehouse store.

Hey, you can't watch basketball all night on an empty stomach.

It's an ideal place to keep up with an 11-game schedule like Wednesday night, even for the guys who are there to work.

''I think everybody wished their garage looked like this to a degree,'' referee Kevin Cutler said.

Borgia, the league's senior vice president of replay and referee operations, is at the Secaucus office five or six nights a week. Every referee on staff is scheduled at least a couple times a season and he tries to make it comfortable, ordering dinner and putting out candy and gum, knowing they could be there eight hours or more.

The refs would rather be in an arena, surrounded by the irreplaceable energy and atmosphere of an NBA game night. But Borgia believes they like their Replay Center appearances.

''Some of these guys never see each other. Rarely do you get four guys together,'' Borgia said. ''If anything it becomes a problem for me, because sometimes they'll want to come in the back and start talking and I'm like `Yo, yo, yo, you got to sit and watch your game!'''

Not to worry. He said there were 2,265 replays last season, and only three were probably wrong.

''I'll take those odds,'' Borgia said.

Cutler was one of four officials assigned to the center Wednesday, joined by Ken Mauer, Dedric Taylor and Nick Buchert. Borgia said the goal is to have one official for every two games.

They see the value of the Replay Center, not only for themselves but for their colleagues who are officiating the games.

''I think it just requires a different skillset really, kind of fine-tune yourself with rules and things of that nature because you really can't make the mistake in here,'' Buchert said. ''The way I look at it is they're counting on me to help them make a decision and if I make an improper decision - which I hope I don't - then it reflects poorly not only on them but on myself.''

Younger officials may be scheduled more often, while Mauer, who has worked 18 NBA Finals games and is currently the league's longest-tenured official in his 32nd season, won't be sitting at a desk much because the NBA wants its best officials on the floor.

His replay rust was obvious, as he violated Borgia's rule about not eating at his terminal.

''Would I rather work a game? Yes, but I understand the importance of this,'' Mauer said, ''so really I come in here and see a different perspective of what people are looking at and maybe I'll pick up something.''

He and Cutler worked the Celtics-Nets game in Brooklyn on Tuesday, then remained in the area for replay duty. It's a work day but first a chance to catch up on rest and paperwork on what's become practically a daylong job on game days.

''On game days we have the whole morning routine where we have our morning meeting, and then we usually meet for lunch, and then we have to be at the arena about an hour and a half before the game,'' Taylor said. ''So being in the Replay Center, you got pretty much the entire day for yourself.''

There's a movie theater and numerous restaurants in the plaza outside the NBA offices, and pool, Ping-Pong and foosball tables in the lobby along with a Pop-a-Shot arcade game.

Once it's time to work, referees join replay managers and technicians who have games on screens in front of them, noting plays that could be reviewed. They yell to the officials sitting nearby when they could be called into action to take a second look at a foot on the line or dangerous contact, such as when the crew in New Orleans wanted to see if DeMarcus Cousins committed a flagrant foul when he drove into Kyle Lowry with his knee high, a play that ultimately was ruled a common foul .

This is the third season the NBA has used referees on staff in the Replay Center, and their responsibilities have grown in hopes of shortening the time to make a ruling. There were 34 reviews recently, just shy of what Borgia said is the record for one night.

And with each one, the referees are getting a chance to look at how their colleagues called plays they may face themselves later in the season.

''It's like being a chef, and you're in the kitchen with other cooks. You get a chance to watch other people cook,'' Cutler said.

And nobody boos them.

''I don't think so,'' Mauer laughed, ''unless I get one wrong here.''

Brown, Irving help Celtics rally for 92-88 win over Warriors
November 16, 2017

BOSTON (AP) Hours before the Celtics took the court Thursday night to protect their winning streak against the defending NBA champion Golden State Warriors, Jaylen Brown was walking around in a fog.

Boston's second-year forward was not even thinking about basketball after learning about the sudden death of his childhood best friend, Trevin Steede, on Wednesday night.

''It was tough to kind of accept it,'' Brown said. ''Plus, I was kind of in shock.''

But after talking to his family and having conversations with Celtics coach Brad Stevens, Brown looked to the basketball court to find solace. The 21-year-old ended up playing one of the best games of his young career.

Brown had 22 points and seven rebounds, Kyrie Irving had 11 of his 16 points in the fourth quarter, including two free throws that put Boston ahead in the closing seconds, and the Celtics beat the Warriors 92-88 on Thursday night for their 14th straight victory.

''He inspired me to come out and play and I played in his spirit,'' Brown said about Steede.

They met after Brown transferred to Joseph Wheeler High School in Marietta, Georgia.

''I remember I didn't have any friends,'' Brown said. ''The first few days I sat at the lunch table by myself - I'm super quiet and didn't know anybody.''

Steede noticed Brown sitting alone one day and told him he could sit with him.

''Ever since then we've been best friends. ... He's been my brother.'' Brown said.

He said the circumstances of Steede's death are still being determined and he declined further comment out of respect for his family. After the final buzzer, Irving walked over and embraced Brown.

''Ky gave me the game ball and said, `This one was for Trevin,''' Irving said.

Kevin Durant had 24 points for Golden State. The Warriors had won seven in a row.

Playing his second game since suffering a facial fracture, Irving shed his protective mask in the second quarter. Then, with the game tied at 88, he was fouled on his layup attempt and calmly made a pair of free throws. Durant then came up empty on his jumper on the other end.

Golden State led by as many as 17, but had to lean heavily on its reserves as its trio of Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Durant struggled offensively.

Curry, who returned to action after missing a game with a bruised right thigh, was the most ineffective. He was 3 of 14 from the field - 2 of 9 from the 3-point line - and had nine points.

''It was just one of those nights,'' Curry said. ''We had control of the game despite how bad we all were shooting. We just didn't sustain ourselves defensively.''

Curry sat for a long stretch after picking up his fourth foul early in the third quarter.

''We kind of fell out of our rotation in the third quarter,'' Warriors coach Steve Kerr said. ''They were just tougher and smarter than we were tonight

Boston came in limiting opponents to just 94.5 points per game, the stingiest mark in the NBA this season. It did even better against a Warriors team that entered the night averaging an NBA-best 119.6 points.

TIP-INS

Warriors: Their 88 points was a season-low. Had seven turnovers in third.

Celtics: Horford registered a double-double in consecutive games for the second time this season. He failed to record back-to-back double-doubles at any point last season.

QUOTABLE

''I asked our trainer if he can officially play without that and the response was, `Yes, but it's not recommended.''' - Celtics coach Brad Stevens on Irving taking off mask.

BIG RUNS

The Warriors went without a point from Durant's 20-foot pull-up with 4:49 left in the third quarter until Omri Casspi's floater with 34.5 left tied it at 68 - a 19-2 Celtics' run.

Curry, Durant and Thompson were just 7 of 26 combined from the field in the first half. But the Warriors were able to maintain their lead thanks to 14 fast-break points.

Durant was the only one of the three to score during a 12-0 Warriors run late in the second quarter.

Boston trailed by just 47-42 at the half, closing the quarter with a 13-2 spurt.

HAYWARD'S SUPPORT

Celtics guard Gordon Hayward, who has been sidelined since suffering a broken ankle on opening night, was on hand for Thursday's game. He sat behind the Celtics' bench and received a loud ovation from the Garden crowd when he was shown on the jumbotron.

UP NEXT

Warriors: Continue their four-game road trip Saturday at Philadelphia.

Celtics: Visit Atlanta on Saturday to begin a three-game trip.

NBA roundup: Aldridge clutch, Spurs beat Thunder
November 18, 2017

SAN ANTONIO -- LaMarcus Aldridge scored 26 points, the final two on a crucial basket in the last minute, as the San Antonio Spurs roared back from a ragged beginning to defeat the Oklahoma City Thunder 104-101 on Friday at the AT&T Center.

After trailing by as many as six points in the fourth quarter, Oklahoma City pulled to within 100-99 on a free throw by Paul George with 45 seconds to play. On the ensuing possession Aldridge scored on a putback of a missed 3-pointer by Danny Green to push San Antonio's lead to 102-99 before the Thunder's Carmelo Anthony canned a jumper with his right foot on the 3-point line with 5 seconds remaining to cut the lead to 102-101.

Pau Gasol then hit two free throws with 2 seconds to play and, after a time out, Oklahoma City's Russell Westbrook had to settle for a contested, wild shot at the buzzer that didn't even hit the rim.

Cavaliers 118, Clippers 113, OT

CLEVELAND -- LeBron James scored 19 of his 39 points in the second half and overtime to lead Cleveland over Los Angeles.

Kevin Love added 25 points and Dwyane Wade scored 23 points with a season-high 11 rebounds for the Cavs, who didn't lead until overtime and trailed by as many as 15.

The Clippers have lost seven straight. Blake Griffin led them with 23 points but shot 8-for-25.

Kings 86, Trail Blazers 82

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Willie Cauley-Stein set a season high with 22 points, the last one a free throw with 3.4 seconds remaining that lifted Sacramento over Portland.

Cauley-Stein, relegated to coming off the bench for the first time this season, scored 13 in the second half and had two key put-backs in the fourth quarter.

Sacramento won its third straight at home and snapped a three-game losing streak.

Timberwolves 111, Mavericks 87

DALLAS -- Jimmy Butler scored 21 and Andrew Wiggins added 19 points to lead a balanced attack and Minnesota rallied from a 14-point deficit to rout Dallas.

The Timberwolves had six players score in double figures, including all five starters.

Dinwiddie made his third start of the season in place of D'Angelo Russell, who underwent arthroscopic knee surgery earlier in the day. With Russell watching the game on television from his Manhattan hospital room, Dinwiddie hit 9 of 14 shots, 6 of 10 3-pointers and grabbed five rebounds in 31 minutes.

Allen Crabbe added 18 points, DeMarre Carroll contributed 17 and Trevor Booker chipped in 14.

The Raptors led by as many as 22 points early in the third quarter and carried a 14-point lead into the fourth quarter.

Heat 91, Wizards 88

WASHINGTON -- Hassan Whiteside had 22 points and 16 rebounds as Miami fended off a frenzied comeback attempt by Washington.

Otto Porter's two free throws with 11.3 seconds remaining pulled the Wizards within 89-88. After Miami's James Johnson hit one of two free throws with 5.8 seconds left, Bradley Beal missed a potential game-tying jumper with 2.6 seconds showing.

Beal scored 22 of his 26 points in the second half.

Pacers 107, Pistons 100

INDIANAPOLIS -- Victor Oladipo scored 21 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to help Indiana rally from a 22-point third-quarter deficit.

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Things I?m looking for this weekend??.

13) Saints won their last seven games after an 0-2 start, only second time that has happened in the NFL (?93 Cowboys). Washington comes calling to the Superdome Sunday; they?ve won four of last five games against New Orleans.

12) USC hasn?t had a week off this season, but they?ll have one next week, before the Pac-12 title game. Trojans beat UCLA 36-14/40-21 the last two years, figure to make it three in a row here.

11) Huge trap game for the 6-3 Jaguars, who head to Cleveland after one of the Jaguars picked the Browns to finish 0-16 this season. Cleveland has couple of offensive linemen banged up, are unsure if they?ll play. Browns are not only 0-9, they?re 2-7 against the spread this year.

10) Wake Forest allowed 1,321 yards the last two weeks, but they outscored Syracuse 40-5 in the second half LW, and now the Demon Deacons are bowl eligible. Wake plays NC State this week; they?ve lost three in a row to the WolfPack, allowing 36.7 ppg.

9) Buccaneers-Dolphins play their re-scheduled game from Week 1; Tampa Bay is on the road for the next three weeks; they scored total of 28 points in their last three games. Dolphins are on a short week after their dismal performance in Charlotte.

8) Arizona ran the ball for 310+ yards in five of their last six games; they?re 3-1 on road, scoring 47 ppg. 7-3 Wildcats are playing Oregon Saturday for the first time since 2014.

7) How will Seattle?s defense be with Richard Sherman out for the season? 5-4 Falcons lost four of last six games (1-5 vs spread); they?re on road for fourth time in last five weeks.

6) Miami Hurricanes have been getting slapped on back all week after whacking Notre Dame last week; now they?re a 19-point favorite over a Virginia team that lost three of its last four games, with all three losses by 17+ points. Hurricanes beat Virginia 27-21/34-14 the last two years.

5) Eagles-Cowboys on Sunday Night Football should be interesting. Key point for me is how the Cowboys protect QB Prescott, who was sacked eight times in Atlanta? Philly had last week off; they went south after their bye last year, but that was in Week 4 after a 3-0 start.

4) Wisconsin is unbeaten; their basketball team lost before the football team. Badgers covered four of last five games with Michigan, are already in Big 14 title game. Underdogs are 7-3 vs spread in last 10 Michigan-Wisconsin games; Wolverines lost last three visits to Madison.

3) The Nathan Peterman era begins for the Bills in a 27,000-seat soccer stadium in Carson, CA, home of the Chargers. Buffalo doesn?t think Tyrod Taylor goes thru his progressions quickly enough, so Peterman gets the nod, a year to the day after Jared Goff made his NFL debut in the Coliseum for the Rams.

2) Florida Atlantic scored 47.5 ppg in winning its last six games; underdogs are 7-1 vs spread in last eight FAU-FIU games. Is Lane Kiffin headed to another big time job? This is a rivalry game, with both teams having first-year coaches.

1) Rams-Vikings pits pair of 7-2 teams against each other in a nice warm dome in Minneapolis. Wish the Vikings had a dome back in the 70?s, when the Rams use to regularly lose playoff games in the frozen climate of the Land of 10,000 Lakes.
