Monday's Tip Sheet
November 13, 2017

Game of the Night: Magic at Warriors ? 10:35 PM EST

A battle of division leaders takes place at Oracle Arena although only one of these teams were predicted to be atop their division at this point. We know what Golden State (10-3 SU, 7-6 ATS) is all about and its credentials, but Orlando (8-5, 7-6 ATS) is playing well through the first month and hope to keep it up on this road trip.

The Magic disappeared on Saturday in a 125-107 setback at Denver as nine-point underdogs, snapping a short two-game winning streak. Frank Vogel?s team began the season with an impressive 6-2 record, including underdog victories over Cleveland, San Antonio, and Memphis. However, Orlando is 2-3 the last five games, including ugly home double-digit losses to Chicago and Boston. The Magic rank fifth in the NBA in points per game at 110.5, while owning the best three-point defense by limiting opponents to 31.5% shooting per contest.

The Warriors are rolling right now by winning and covering six consecutive games, with all six victories coming by 17 points or more. The most recent triumph came over upstart Philadelphia on Saturday, 135-114 as 13 ?-point favorites, led by Kevin Durant?s 29 points as the defending champions shot 58.5% from the floor.

Since 2013, the Warriors have captured eight straight meetings with the Magic, while covering both times last season as hefty 14-point favorites.

Stumbling Home

The Clippers (5-7 SU, 5-7 ATS) have dropped seven of eight games since a 4-0 start to the season, capped off by an 0-3 road trip at San Antonio, Oklahoma City, and New Orleans. Los Angeles hosts Philadelphia tonight, as the 76ers (6-6 SU, 8-4 ATS) look to snap a two-game skid on their five-game road swing. Philadelphia was riding a five-game winning streak prior to back-to-back defeats at Sacramento and Golden State, while eclipsing the OVER in six of the past seven contests.

Returning to Staples Center isn?t exactly the formula for a win for Doc Rivers? squad, who lost four of five on its most recent homestand. The defense was torched on this three-game road swing, allowing at least 111 points in each defeat, while not covering in a loss yet this season. The Clippers have defeated the 76ers five straight times at home, but this is the shortest spread since 2011, when Philadelphia knocked off L.A., 104-94.

Hitting their Stride

The Nuggets (8-5 SU, 5-8 ATS) had their expectations raised in the offseason following the pick-up of free agent forward Paul Millsap, but Denver started 1-3. Denver has rebounded lately by winning seven of nine games, including a 5-1 mark on its most recent homestand with the lone loss coming to Golden State. Mike Malone?s team travels to Portland before taking three days off prior to a home game with New Orleans on Friday.

The Blazers (6-6 SU, 4-7-1 ATS) look to snap a two-game skid after dropping a pair of close home decisions to the Grizzlies and Nets by a combined four points. Portland is on the worst ATS run in the league right now at 1-7 ATS following a 3-0-1 ATS start to the season. Last season, the Blazers grabbed three of four meetings from the Nuggets, including both matchups at the Moda Center as Portland has beaten Denver eight straight times at home.

Sounds of Silence

The Jazz (6-7 SU, 7-6 ATS) snapped a four-game skid in Saturday?s 114-107 home victory over the Nets as six-point favorites. However, center Rudy Gobert will be sidelined for four weeks after suffering a bone bruise in his right knee against Miami last Friday. Utah hosts Minnesota to close out a four-game homestand before the Jazz venture out east for a four-game road trip starting Wednesday in New York.

The Wolves (7-5 SU, 5-6-1 ATS) knocked off the Jazz in the first meeting this season at Target Center on October 20 by a 100-97 count, but Utah cashed as 4 ?-point underdogs. Minnesota is winless on its current three-game road swing following losses at Golden State and Phoenix, as the Wolves were tripped up by the Suns as 10-point favorites on Saturday, 118-110.

Broadway LeBron

The Cavaliers (6-7 SU, 4-8-1 ATS) are looking to reach the .500 mark for the first time since sitting at 3-3 on October 28. Cleveland travels to New York trying to avenge a 114-95 home setback to the Knicks as 10 ?-point favorites October 29. Since LeBron James returned to the Cavaliers in 2014, Cleveland owns a perfect 6-0 record at Madison Square Garden, including covers in each of the past three visits to New York.

The Knicks (7-5 SU, 7-5 ATS) have taken care of their home business this season with a 6-2 record at the Garden, while scoring at least 108 points in each of their past four home victories. Since starting the campaign at 0-3 SU/ATS, New York has covered seven of its previous nine games, while snapping a nine-game skid to Cleveland in the victory at Quicken Loans Arena last month.

Head-to-Head Matchups

-- Sacramento has dropped six straight road games as the Kings continue their three-game road swing at Washington. The Wizards wasted the Kings in their last matchup on October 29 as 7 ?-point favorites, 110-83. Washington has won four consecutive home meetings with Sacramento since 2014.

-- The home team has captured the last six matchups between the Bucks and Grizzlies, who meet in Milwaukee tonight. The Bucks have limited the Grizzlies to 96 points or less in their past four home meetings with Memphis. The Grizzlies finish off a five-game road trip following Saturday?s loss at Houston, while the Bucks are seeking their third straight win.

-- The road squad won the two meetings between the Hawks and Pelicans last season, as Atlanta heads to the Big Easy. The Hawks are riding a three-game skid, while allowing at least 110 points in seven consecutive contests. New Orleans has won four of its past five, while covering each time during this stretch.

-- The Lakers outlasted the Suns, 132-130 last month in Phoenix as the two Pacific division rivals hook up again in the Valley. Los Angeles has dropped the first three contests of a four-game away swing, while scoring 96 points or less each time. The previous six meetings between the Lakers and Suns have sailed OVER the total, while Phoenix is 4-2 in the last six home matchups with Los Angeles.

NBA roundup: Down 24, Cavs rally to beat Knicks
November 13, 2017

NEW YORK -- LeBron James had 23 points and came one rebound short of a triple-double as the Cleveland Cavaliers stormed back from a 24-point deficit to defeat the host New York Knicks 104-101 on Monday night at Madison Square Garden.

James hit a step-back, 27-foot 3-pointer to put the Cavs up by three with 1:23 left in the game, the final dagger in an 8-0 Cleveland run to complete a rousing comeback. James finished with 12 assists and nine rebounds, and Kyle Korver added 21 points for the Cavs.

New York led by as much as 24 in the third quarter before heading into the fourth up 15 and still led by double figures with 6:53 remaining. Cleveland put on the defensive clamps late, though, and the Cavs hit four 3-pointers in the last 4:35, including two by Korver, to upend the previously hot Knicks.

Timberwolves 109, Jazz 98

SALT LAKE CITY -- Karl-Anthony Towns scored 24 points and collected 13 rebounds while Jimmy Butler added 21 points and 10 assists to help Minnesota overwhelm Utah.

Taj Gibson also finished with a double-double for Minnesota, adding 15 points and 10 rebounds. Jeff Teague chipped in 22 points.

Donovan Mitchell scored 24 points and Rodney Hood added 16 points to lead the Jazz. Utah lost for the fourth time in its last five games on its home floor.

Wizards 110, Kings 92

WASHINGTON -- John Wall scored 21 points and continued his torrid 3-point shooting against Sacramento as Washington won its third consecutive game.

Marcin Gortat had 18 and Otto Porter 15 for the Wizards, who matched their longest winning streak of the season and closed their four-game homestand at 3-1. Washington opened the season 3-0, but lost five of seven, including a loss to the one-win Dallas Mavericks on Nov. 7.

George Hill scored 13 of his 16 points in the first quarter for Sacramento. Zach Randolph and Buddy Hield each had 12 points.

Bucks 110, Grizzlies 103

MILWAUKEE -- John Henson scored eight of his 17 points in the fourth quarter and Milwaukee rallied down the stretch for the win.

Tyreke Evans scored 14 of his 27 points in the fourth quarter for the Grizzlies, but Memphis couldn't hold off Milwaukee, which won its third straight.

Khris Middleton also scored 17 points for the Bucks, who were paced by 27 points from Giannis Antetokounmpo -- his second-lowest total of the season -- and Eric Bledsoe finished with 15.

Pelicans 106, Hawks 105

NEW ORLEANS -- Darius Miller hit four 3-pointers in the final 5:45 and scored 14 of his 21 points in the fourth-quarter run to lift New Orleans to the win.

Guard E'Twaun Moore was the Pelicans' leading scorer with 24 points and DeMarcus Cousins added 22 points, 16 rebounds and seven assists.

Atlanta led 101-97 with 2:35 left when Tyler Cavanaugh hit an open 3-pointer, but Miller responded with a 3-pointer from the right wing and another from the top of the key with 52 seconds left to put New Orleans on top 106-104.

Lakers 100, Suns 93

PHOENIX -- Jordan Clarkson scored 25 points in 25 minutes off the bench and Corey Brewer and Kyle Kuzma combined for 13 points in the fourth quarter to lift Los Angeles past Phoenix.

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope scored 15 points and Brook Lopez added 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Lakers, who ended a three-game losing streak in a game where neither team had a double-digit lead until 2:30 remained.

Devin Booker had 36 points for Phoenix, his sixth 30-plus-point performance in the first 15 games of the season.

LeBron: Comments a shot at Phil
November 13, 2017

NEW YORK (AP) LeBron James says his belief that the Knicks should have drafted Dennis Smith Jr. wasn't meant to slight Frank Ntilikina, though it was intended as a swipe at Phil Jackson.

''Oh yeah, it was definitely a shot at him,'' James said Monday. ''That's for sure.''

James said Saturday after playing in Dallas that Smith should be a Knick. New York took Ntilikina with the No. 8 pick in the June draft, one spot before the Mavericks selected Smith.

James said he's known Smith since the former North Carolina State point guard was 13 or 14 years old and that they had trained together. He knows only a little about Ntilikina, a teenager from France who had played overseas with one of James' friends from Ohio.

Last offseason, Jackson had said the Knicks needed a point guard, either through the draft or free agency, and James figured they could do no better than taking Smith to play with Kristaps Porzingis. He compared his comments to his thoughts that the Cleveland Browns should have drafted quarterback Deshaun Watson with the No. 1 pick, saying that doesn't mean Myles Garrett won't become a top defensive player.

''Like I said, it's no shade at Frank. I don't even know the kid,'' James said at the Cavaliers' shootaround before their game against the Knicks. ''I wasn't even thinking about the kid when I was talking about Dennis Smith. I was thinking about the Knicks organization and Phil Jackson at the time and Dennis Smith's talent and Porzingis.''

Jackson selected Ntilikina, but that was about the last thing he did as team president, as he and the organization parted ways at the end of June. He had angered James during his three years running the Knicks when he referred to James' friends and business partners as a ''posse.''

''I'm not a Phil Jackson fan, I think you guys already know that,'' James said. ''That's the past. He's not even here anymore.''

Ex-NBA player Jacobson guilty for fraud
November 13, 2017

HASTINGS, Minn. (AP) Former NBA player Sam Jacobson has pleaded guilty to a fraud charge stemming from the sale of a Minnesota home.

Jacobson pleaded guilty Monday to residential mortgage fraud. His wife, Traci Jacobson, pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting. They'll be sentenced Jan. 29.

The charges stem from the 2011 short sale of Sam Jacobson's Apple Valley home to Traci Jacobson, who was his girlfriend at the time.

The sale barred Sam Jacobson from remaining in the home. But investigators say he and his three children didn't move out. Traci Jacobson then sold the home, netting a profit of $176,000, and bought a new home where the couple still lives.

Defense attorneys say the couple has reached a restitution agreement with the mortgage lender.

Sam Jacobson, a star University of Minnesota player, was drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers in 1998. He also played for the Golden State Warriors and the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Weekly Six-pack
November 13, 2017

With the NBA swimming up against the NFL and a wild college football season, not to mention NCAA ball starting up, it can be easy to lose sight of what's gone on in the first month of a season that began earlier than it had in decades.

Kyrie Irving, despite a facial fracture that will force him to wear a protective mask this week, has led the Boston Celtics to a 12-2 start, getting more help than anyone could've dreamed up from Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum to overcome losing Gordon Hayward.

Cleveland has crashed due to injuries and awful defense, Oklahoma City lacks chemistry, Utah lost defensive catalyst Rudy Gobert for at least a month and the bottom-four teams, Dallas, Atlanta, Chicago and Sacramento, are a combined 9-41.

In this NBA version of the "Six-pack," we'll look at more top trends that have sprouted up over an interesting first few weeks.

Boston Bullies

The Celtics have proven that Danny Ainge's work as general manager remains elite and really take every possession of every game seriously. They're hungry and truly invest on the defensive end, which has Brad Stevens as the early leader for Coach of the Year. They're 11-2-1 against the number and have seen the under come in 10 of 14 times and will play only one back-to-back between now and Dec. 10. Between now and a Dec. 8 visit to San Antonio, I'd suspect they'll only be an underdog on Nov. 16 when the Warriors come to town. Al Horford has returned from his concussion scare and is really attacking defenders. If Golden State doesn't end the Celtics' winning streak at 13 -- they'll beat the Nets Tuesday -- the run could reach deep into the teens if everyone stays healthy.

Rockets on the road

While I still believe the Warriors are going to finish with the NBA's top record, one reason Houston may make a run at it has unfolded early. On the road, the Rockets have had only one night when they couldn't find their game. There will be a few growing pains with Chris Paul getting back in the mix, but there's still too many weapons on this team not to continue riding a hot streak that has seen them cover in five of six. They're 7-1 on the road (5-3 ATS) and will return to Memphis, site of that 103-89 Oct. 28 loss this Saturday. If they can defeat the Suns and Grizzlies on the road this week as likely favorites, they'll enter December having won 90 percent of their roadies. James Harden isn't even playing all that well in opposing arenas, averaging 26.8 points and 10.9 assists while shooting just 42.5 percent. He's shooting 49 percent and averaging 34.8 points at Toyota Center thus far. If the Rockets are winning games without Paul and with Harden not being terribly efficient on the road, they might be able to make a run at winning 65-plus games.

New digs in Detroit

The Pistons are back downtown after a few decades in Auburn Hills and have really taken to the new Little Caesar's Arena. They just completed a perfect five-game homestand that featured wins over Milwaukee, Indiana and Miami. Detroit hits the road for rematches with the Bucks and Pacers before a Sunday night game at the Timberwolves, so this will be a critical week to study whether they're for real. Andre Drummond has made adramatic difference by increasing his free-throw percentrage to 63.2 after years in the high 30s. He's averaging a career-best 15.7 rebounds per game and is no longer being pulled from games down the stretch, which is a major reason why they're 9-3-1 against the number this season. The Pistons only play in Detroit twice in an upcoming 11-game stretch between now and Dec. 6, hosting the Cavs next Monday and Phoenix on Nov. 29.

Clippers collapse

After winning their first four games of the season, covering while delivering the under in some stifling defensive outings, Golden State appears to have gotten in the heads of the rival Clips again. The Warriors dropped a 141-113 hammering on L.A. at Staples on Oct. 30, part of a 1-7 run SU and ATS. The defense has broken down without point guard Patrick Beverley, who is dealing with a knee injury and have missed Danilo Gallinari, out with a glute injury. L.A. faced Philadelphia on Monday before getting a few more days to rest up and get healthy prior to a five-game road trip that could dictate whether this group will be fighting an uphill battle as they attempt to make the playoffs following CP-3's departure.

Knicks bloom in the Garden

Since losing their home opener against the Pistons, the Knicks have excelled at home, winning six of seven entering Monday night's matchup against the Cavs. Kristaps Porzingis is averaging 30 points per game as he gets his 12th game of the season underway and has predictably been even better at home, shooting 55 percent from the field, 45 percent from 3-point range and scoring at 32.4 points-per-game clip at Madison Square Garden. After LeBron James came into town and lit up the New York's draft strategy and ex-team president, big home dates against the Jazz, Clippers and Raptors over the next 10 days could help the Knicks become an event again in the city if they find a way to not disappoint everybody.

Warriors taking best punches

Since that puzzling Oct. 29 home loss to the Pistons after which head coach Steve Kerr essentially challenged his team to care about their job, Golden State is 6-0 and has imposed its will by an average margin of victory of 21.5 points. The Dubs smashed Philadelphia over the weekend 135-114 on the heels of ending Minnesota's five-game winning streak 125-101. Following Monday's homestand closer against the surprising Orlando Magic, the Warriors will hit the road and face the Celtics, 76ers, Nets and Thunder. Now that they're interested again, it's worth noting that they're 5-1 on the road this season, playing their role as conquering villain quite well with covers in four straight opposing gyms. Stephen Curry entered the week questionable to play due to a thigh contusion and is shooting what would be a career-worst 38.8 clip from 3-point range.

Masked man: Irving returns as Celtics win 13th straight
November 14, 2017

NEW YORK (AP) Kyrie Irving returned to the lineup and scored 25 points while wearing a mask, and the Boston Celtics beat the Brooklyn Nets 109-102 on Tuesday night for their 13th straight victory.

The Celtics remained unbeaten since an 0-2 start heading into their showdown Thursday in Boston against the NBA champion Golden State Warriors.

Marcus Morris added 21 points and 10 rebounds, and Jayson Tatum scored 19 points for the Celtics.

Irving missed one game with a minor facial fracture after he was hit by teammate Aron Baynes on Friday. He fiddled with the mask frequently, but it didn't seem to affect his play much. He made a jumper with 3:40 left after the Nets had closed within four points and drove for another basket about 35 seconds later.

Boston then finally put it away with Jaylen Brown's alley-oop feed to Tatum before Irving hit two free throws to make it 106-96.

Joe Harris scored 19 points and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson had 16 points and nine rebounds for the Nets.

RAPTORS 129, ROCKETS 113

HOUSTON (AP) - DeMar DeRozan scored 27 points and Toronto built a big lead in the first half and held on for a win over Houston.

James Harden had 38 points and made 19 of 19 foul shots for the Rockets, who ended a six-game winning streak.

Houston scored six straight points, including three free throws from Harden, to make it 108-103 with about 7 1/2 minutes left.

Delon Wright made a free throw for the Raptors soon after that, and OG Anunoby connected for Toronto's first field goal in more than three minutes on a 3-pointer with 6:25 remaining. After Wright's layup, Kyle Lowry stole the ball from Harden, and DeRozan finished on the other end with a dunk to make it 116-103.

Harden got Houston going again with a four-point play. The free throw was his 19th, setting a franchise record for most foul shots without a miss in a game.

DeRozan and Serge Ibaka had back-to-back dunks after Harden's big play to make it 120-107 with about three minutes left and send many of the home fans toward the exits.

SPURS 97, MAVERICKS 91

DALLAS (AP) - LaMarcus Aldridge scored a season-high 32 points in his hometown and San Antonio beat Dallas.

Gregg Popovich became the fastest NBA coach to 500 road wins. He got there in 835 away games, 41 fewer than Pat Riley.

Aldridge, a product of Dallas' Seagoville High School, scored eight points during a decisive stretch of the fourth quarter. Patty Mills added a season-high 19 points for the Spurs.

Rookie Dennis Smith Jr. led Dallas with a career-high 27 points, and J.J. Barea and Harrison Barnes had 16 each. The Mavericks are 2-13 for the second straight season and fifth time overall.

Wednesday's Tip Sheet
November 14, 2017

Game of the Night: 76ers at Lakers ? 10:35 PM EST

Four players selected in the top three of the NBA draft over the last three years take the court at Staples Center on Wednesday. Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid have helped lead the 76ers (7-6 SU, 9-4 ATS) to victories in six of their past eight games, including a 109-105 triumph over the Clippers on Monday. Embiid is averaging 20.9 points and 10.8 rebounds per game, while Simmons is close to averaging a double-double with 17.8 ppg and 9.2 rpg.

Embiid and Simmons each posted double-doubles against the Clippers on Monday, while Robert Covington put together a 31-point effort on 9-of-12 shooting to send Los Angeles to a sixth straight loss. The 76ers have compiled a solid 6-3 ATS record away from Wells Fargo Center, as this is the final game of a five-game road swing before returning home on Saturday to host Golden State.

The Lakers (6-8 SU, 7-7 ATS) wrapped up their four-game road trip with a victory at Phoenix on Monday, 100-93 to bust the 100-point mark (barely) for the first time in five games. Rookie guard Lonzo Ball struggled again from the floor by scoring seven points on 3-of-10 shooting, while Brandon Ingram made only 2-of-9 shots from the field for six points. The Lakers have started to heat up at home recently by winning three straight at Staples Center, including outright underdog victories over the Pistons and Grizzlies.

Piston Power

Detroit (10-3 SU, 9-3-1 ATS) has sprinted out to a 7-1 mark at home after sweeping a five-game homestand, capped off by Sunday?s 112-103 triumph over Miami. Now, the Pistons have to show their meddle on the highway, where they have already knocked off the Warriors and Clippers. Detroit travels to Milwaukee looking to knock off the Bucks for the second time this season after beating Jason Kidd?s squad, 105-96 on November 3.

The Bucks (7-5 SU, 6-5-2 ATS) have suddenly won three straight after a four-game losing streak, topped off by Monday?s 110-103 home victory over the Grizzlies. Milwaukee has had its way with Detroit at home the last few seasons by beating the Pistons in four of the past five meetings at BMO Harris Bradley Center.

Silent Road

The highway hasn?t been kind to the Jazz (6-8 SU, 7-7 ATS), who are the only team in the league without an away victory. Utah travels to the Big Apple to face New York following Monday?s dreadful effort in a 109-98 home defeat to Minnesota as three-point underdogs. The Jazz have lost five of their last six games, while center Rudy Gobert remains sidelined due to a bone bruise in his right knee. Utah hopes to continue its recent domination of New York by winning five of the past six meetings, including a sweep last season.

The Knicks (7-6 SU, 8-5 ATS) squandered a 23-point lead in Monday?s three-point setback to the Cavaliers, but New York cashed as five-point ?dogs to improve to 6-2 ATS in the last eight home contests. Since beginning the season at 0-3 ATS, Jeff Hornacek?s club has cashed tickets in eight of the past 10 games, while not losing consecutive games since the 0-3 start. The Knicks are perfect as a home favorite this season at 3-0 SU/ATS, while scoring at least 107 points in each of those wins.

Welcome Back

The Heat (6-7 SU, 4-7-2 ATS) return to the American Airlines Arena following a 3-3 SU and 4-2 ATS road swing. Miami lost the finale at Detroit, but pulled off underdog victories over the Clippers and Jazz to improve to 3-4 on the highway. The Heat host the Southeast division-leading Wizards as part of a home-and-home set that concludes in Washington on Friday. Miami swept the four-game series from Washington last season, as three of those wins came in the underdog role.

The Wizards (6-7 SU, 4-7-2 ATS) rebounded from a shocking home loss to the Mavericks last week to win three straight games over the Lakers, Hawks, and Kings by double-digits apiece. Washington is riding a five-game UNDER streak, as Scott Brooks? squad has limited four of the past five opponents to 96 points or less. The Wizards are 4-1 to the UNDER away from Capital One Arena, but both matchups at Miami last season sailed OVER the total.

Big Easy Rematch

For the second time in less than a week, the Pelicans and Raptors are hooking up. In the first matchup at Air Canada Center last Thursday, Toronto outlasted New Orleans, 122-118, but failed to cash as five-point favorites. The Pelicans lost in spite of shooting 53.7% from the field, but DeMarcus Cousins brought down that number by hitting only 8-of-24 shots. The Raptors have won five consecutive meetings with the Pelicans since 2015, while limiting the Pelicans to 91 points or less in the last two matchups at Smoothie King Center.

Silver Streak

The Spurs (8-5 SU, 7-6 ATS) have owned Minnesota over the years by winning 12 straight meetings since November 2014, including a 107-99 triumph in the season opener. San Antonio travels to the Target Center following a 4-2 homestand, capped off by a 133-94 blowout of Chicago on Saturday. Gregg Popovich?s team has struggled on the road recently by dropping three straight, while getting limited to 94 points or fewer in each of those defeats.

The Wolves (8-5 SU, 6-6-1 ATS) bounced back from losses at Golden State and Phoenix to beat Utah on Monday to avoid a winless road trip. Minnesota in the midst of a six-game UNDER streak, while seeking its fourth consecutive home win after topping the 112-point mark in each of its last three wins at the Target Center.

Nic of Time

The Hornets (5-7 SU, 5-6-1 ATS) are back at home after losing all four contests on its recent road swing, including a pair of setbacks by five points or less in the final two at New York and Boston. Charlotte welcomes back swingman Nicolas Batum (15.1 ppg last season), who makes his season debut after suffering an elbow injury in the preseason. The Hornets host the Cavaliers, who swept Charlotte last season by capturing all four games, while cashing the OVER three times.

Cleveland (7-7 SU, 4-9-1 ATS) failed to cover in Monday?s 104-101 comeback victory at New York as five-point favorites after erasing a 23-point deficit. Following a five-game OVER streak, the Cavs have finished UNDER the total in the last two contests, while allowing at least 100 points in 12 straight games.

Head-to-Head Matchups

-- Sacramento and Atlanta have combined for a 5-22 record so far as the two teams hook up at Philips Arena. The Kings and Hawks split their two-game series last season with the home squad winning each time, while Atlanta has won 10 consecutive home meetings with Sacramento dating back to 2007.

-- Indiana has lost five of six as the Pacers head to Memphis to face a Grizzlies? club returning home from a 2-3 road trip. Memphis owns a 6-1 record in the last seven matchups with Indiana since 2014, including four double-digit wins at FedEx Forum.

-- If the Thunder can face solely Eastern Conference opponents, they would be just fine. Oklahoma City has compiled a 4-1 SU/ATS record against the East, including a 101-69 annihilation of Chicago at the United Center last month. The Bulls visit OKC on Wednesday as Chicago has won in its past two matchups at Chesapeake Energy Arena.

-- The Magic finish up a four-game western swing at Portland, trying to rebound from losses at Denver and Golden State. The road team won each meeting last season, as Orlando snapped a four-game losing streak at the Moda Center that dated back to 2013.

Pistons may be NBA's top surprise
November 15, 2017

The Detroit Pistons are heading on the road for a few days, so maybe someone will see them play.

They've certainly been worth watching.

Detroit's 10-3 start, good for No. 2 in the Eastern Conference standings, is one of the biggest good surprises in the NBA through the season's first month. The Pistons already have a road win at Golden State, swept a five-game homestand - possibly to the delight of all those unoccupied red seats at Little Caesars Arena, more on that in a moment - and are off to their best start in 12 years.

''I know that we're playing as a team right now,'' Detroit's Luke Kennard said. ''We're really locked in. We're really playing together and we play hard. When you have a team that does that together, you win.''

Now comes the test.

Starting Wednesday, the Pistons play five of their next six games on the road - visiting Milwaukee, Indiana and Minnesota before returning home to face Cleveland, then heading right back out for a trip to Oklahoma City and Boston.

After topping Miami to finish off a 5-0 homestand Sunday, Pistons coach Stan Van Gundy made no effort to hide how pleased he is right now.

''We did a great job here, and now you just move on to the next challenge,'' Van Gundy said. ''Now nine of 11 on the road, the next three games on the road against teams you beat at home so you know they want back at you. The challenges just keep mounting, but you put wins in the bank.''

Maybe at some point, there will be fans in the seats.

The brand-new Detroit arena has a listed capacity for basketball at 20,491, which was the announced crowd for opening night. In seven games since, the Pistons have announced crowds between 13,709 and 17,683 - and those numbers may be generous, given how empty the building looks on television. Officially, Detroit sold 76 percent of its tickets in those seven games.

GIANNIS WATCH

Technically, no foreign player has ever won an NBA scoring title. Dominique Wilkins has one and he was born in Paris, but only because his father was in the U.S. Air Force.

Giannis Antetokounmpo may change that in a few months. And if not this season, then probably soon enough.

The Milwaukee star who hails from Greece went into this week averaging just over 31 points per game and leading the league in that department. He was the Most Improved Player last season and don't be surprised if he gets more votes for that trophy this season - along with MVP ballots as well.

''He plays now to destroy you,'' Spurs coach Gregg Popovich told reporters last week before Antetokounmpo scored 28 in Milwaukee's road win over San Antonio. ''In the beginning he was pretty darn good and he would do this and he would do that. But now he knows he can do it to you every time. He's for real.''

Antetokounmpo turns 23 on Dec. 6. The only other players in the last 50 years with 5,000 points, 2,000 rebounds and 1,000 assists before celebrating their 23rd birthdays - Hall of Famer Tracy McGrady, and future Hall of Famer LeBron James.

ANNIVERSARIES

A couple of significant milestone dates are nearing.

Sunday marks the 13th anniversary since the so-called ''Malice at The Palace,'' the infamous brawl involving Indiana and Detroit after Metta World Peace (then Ron Artest) went into the stands after a fan hit him with a drink. The aftermath included nine players being suspended, and security in NBA arenas has been different ever since.

And Tuesday is the 16th anniversary of the first call-up from what is now called the NBA G League - the Denver Nuggets brought eventual NBA champion Chris Andersen up from the Fayetteville Patriots, a move that paved the way for hundreds of players to truly view the development league as a springboard to the NBA.

THE WEEK AHEAD

Some games to keep an eye on over the coming days:

- Philadelphia at L.A. Lakers, Wednesday: Ben Simmons and Lonzo Ball, a matchup of future NBA assist leaders.

- Golden State at Boston, Thursday: An NBA Finals preview? The road team has won five straight in this series.

- Oklahoma City at San Antonio, Friday: Russell Westbrook has triple-doubles in his last two games vs. the Spurs.

- Houston at Memphis, Saturday: The Rockets' wide-open offense goes up against the Grizzlies' airtight defense.

- Washington at Toronto, Sunday: John Wall vs. Kyle Lowry might get overlooked on an NFL Sunday, but shouldn't.

---

STAT LINE OF THE WEEK

Paul George, Oklahoma City: His 37-point, eight-rebound, five-assist game against Dallas on Sunday wasn't even his best game of the week (he had 42, 9 and 7 two nights earlier against the Clippers). But the Sunday game gets the nod since it came on Russell Westbrook's birthday and when asked what he got his teammate, George said ''I got him 37.''
