Friday's Tip Sheet
February 9, 2018

Game of the Night: Bucks at Heat (-1 ?, 198 ?) ? 8:05 PM EST

The crazy NBA trade deadline came to a conclusion on Thursday afternoon with the Cavaliers wheeling and dealing for nearly a roster overhaul. One of the veterans that Cleveland parted with was Dwyane Wade, who makes his triumphant return to Miami following 13 seasons with the Heat to go along with three championships. Wade is expected to take the court on Friday as the Heat try to rebound from a five-game losing streak.

Miami (29-26 SU, 25-27-3 ATS) has slipped to second place in the Southeast division behind surging Washington as the Heat?s defense has let them down recently. Following a five-game stretch of allowing less than 100 points, Miami has given up 111, 111, and 109 points the past three trips to the court, resulting in three consecutive OVERS. The latest setback came against Houston on Wednesday, 109-101 as 4 ?-point underdogs, even though both Josh Richardson and Goran Dragic posted 30-point efforts.

Milwaukee (30-23 SU, 23-25-2 ATS) seeks its first victory in three tries against Miami this season after losing twice in a four-day span to the Heat last month. The Bucks have won seven of eight games since firing head coach Jason Kidd, including a sweep of the struggling Empire State squads with road blowouts of the Nets and Knicks this week. Milwaukee is riding an eight-game UNDER streak, while yielding below 100 points six times in this stretch.

Motor City Reunion

The Pistons (27-26 SU, 26-25-2 ATS) haven?t lost since acquiring Blake Griffin from the Clippers last month, going 5-0. In Griffin?s four games in the lineup, the All-Star forward has averaged 21.5 ppg, while Detroit has eclipsed the 111-point mark in three straight games. The only negative has been their lack of covering big numbers, as the Pistons are 0-3 ATS as a favorite of 4 ? points or more, although their only ATS win came in a blowout of Portland on Monday as 2 ?-point favorites.

Griffin will face off against Los Angeles (27-25 SU, 28-23-1 ATS) for the first time as the Clippers embark on a seven-game road trip. The Clips have heated up of late by winning four of their last five games, including a pair of home victories over the Bulls and Mavericks. Surprisingly, Doc Rivers? squad has performed well on the highway since late December by compiling a 5-1 SU/ATS mark, including victories at Golden State and New Orleans. The Clippers are playing with revenge after falling to the Pistons at home in late October, 95-87.

Cav Plenty (Of New Faces)

A house cleaning took place on Thursday in Cleveland as the Cavaliers (31-22 SU, 15-37-1 ATS) parted ways with six players, most notably disgruntled guard Isaiah Thomas. The diminutive guard was dealt to the Lakers along with Channing Frye, while Wade, Jae Crowder, Derrick Rose, and Iman Shumpert were also sent packing. The final game with the old contingent saw LeBron James drill a jumper at the buzzer to lift the Cavaliers past the Timberwolves, 140-138 in overtime on Wednesday.

The Cavaliers travel to Atlanta tonight as the appetizer prior to Sunday?s showdown with the Celtics in Boston. Cleveland is riding a horrific 0-12 ATS run away from Quicken Loans Arena, while winning only once in this span, coming at Orlando on January 6. The Hawks (17-38 SU, 28-25-2 ATS) have covered in each of the first three meetings with the Cavaliers this season, including a 117-115 upset of Cleveland in November. Following a 6-0 ATS run as a home underdog, the Hawks are 1-3 ATS in their past four when receiving points at Philips Arena.

The Butler is Back

Minnesota (34-23 SU, 28-27-2 ATS) sits atop the Northwest division and part of that success is due to the offseason acquisition of guard Jimmy Butler from Chicago. Butler leads the Wolves by averaging 22.3 ppg, one of five Minnesota players putting up double-digits each game. The Wolves head to the United Center in Chicago as Butler plays his first game against his old team as Minnesota tries to snap a five-game skid away from the Target Center.

Chicago (18-35 SU, 29-23-1 ATS) has spiraled out of control recently by losing seven straight games, while dropping all three contests on their west coast swing. Extending back to late December, the Bulls have yielded at least 105 points in nine consecutive home outings, although Chicago has hit the UNDER in three straight home games. Facing the Western Conference has been no picnic either for Fred Hoiberg?s team, who is 1-8 the past nine matchups against the West, while covering three times.

Sandwich Spot

The Celtics (40-16 SU, 34-20-2 ATS) became the first Eastern Conference squad to reach the 40-win mark in Thursday?s 110-104 overtime triumph at Washington. Boston ended a five-game skid at Capital One Arena as Kyrie Irving led the Celtics with 28 points, while drilling three free throws late in regulation to force overtime. Boston knocked out Washington in the second round of last season?s playoffs, while the Celtics take on the re-tooled Cavaliers on Sunday afternoon at TD Garden in a rematch of the Eastern Conference Finals.

In the middle of these two playoff rematches, the Celtics welcome in the Pacers (30-25 SU, 29-26 ATS), who have been off since Monday?s home loss to the Wizards. Indiana?s contest against New Orleans on Wednesday was postponed due to a leak at Smoothie King Center, as the Pacers look to improve on a 5-1 record in their last six opportunities off a loss. Indiana has dropped five consecutive matchups with Boston, including a pair of home defeats to the Celtics this season. The Pacers have struggled of late away from Bankers Life Fieldhouse by losing four of their past five on the highway with the lone victory coming at San Antonio.

Fast Break

-- The 76ers have won seven straight games at Wells Fargo Center as Philadelphia hosts New Orleans. The Pelicans have lost three consecutive games only once this season, as New Orleans is 7-1 SU/ATS off back-to-back defeats. In their first matchup in December, the Pelicans outlasted the 76ers, 131-124, but the last three matchups in Philadelphia have finished UNDER the total.

-- The Rockets return home following a four-game sweep of their road trip, as Houston seeks its seventh straight win as Denver invades the Toyota Center. Houston has failed to cover in its past three home victories as heavy favorites, while Denver has won its previous three games, even though the Nuggets have dropped six consecutive road contests.

-- Charlotte looks to rebound following an overtime setback at Portland on Thursday as the Hornets wrap up their road swing at Utah. The Hornets try to avoid their first three-game skid since mid-December, but it won?t be easy as the Jazz look to extend their winning streak to eight after a perfect 4-0 road swing. Utah fell to Charlotte last month, 99-88, but the Jazz have not lost to the Hornets/Bobcats franchise in the past 10 meetings at home.

-- Portland ended a three-game skid in Thursday?s home victory over Charlotte as the Blazers have a quick turnaround with a visit to Sacramento. The Blazers and Kings have split a pair of matchups this season with the home team winning each time, while Sacramento tries to improve on a 1-6 record off a home victory after knocking off Chicago on Monday.

Dinero Tracker - Feb. 9
February 9, 2018

Read the Dinero Tracker's mission statement here
Last night's ATS Records
NBA: 5-2 | NCAA BB: 13-21

Thursday's action wasn't as exciting as Wednesday's but continued my slide in college as a tough two days filled with backdoor covers or falling just shy on a total continued. The pros was much kinder once again, although my two losses came by a half-point, which is never pleasant. If Jusuf Nurkic had just made his second free-throw in the closing stages of Portland's 109-103 OT win over Charlotte, it would've been a much happier evening. Atlanta hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer in my guarantee loss that liked it plus 1.5 in Orlando, but that only pulled it within a bucket. The Hawks had their chances and lost to the depleted Magic, so it was a wager I don't regret. The same can't be said for a lot of what went down in college, where there were a number of whiffs in addition to a few maddening bad beats. The NBA lock is now 17-for-25 (68%) since Jan. 11. Here's Thursday's recap, complete with some of the highlights (and lowlights):

FRIDAY'S FREE SELECTION

The pick: Minnesota -7

Jimmy Butler is back in town playing the best basketball of his career, and since LeBron James got the last word in Wednesday's classic OT game in Cleveland, I don't think a hangover ensues for the Timberwolves. The Bulls have a lot of moving parts keeping them from gaining a rhythm, from Zach LaVine still working his way back to Kris Dunn barely out of concussion protocol and still not playing. Lauri Markkanen returns from paternity leave, so the expectation here is that the Timberwolves will be able to put this game away. Ride Minnesota and lay the points.

THURSDAY'S FREE SELECTION

The pick: Oregon -5

The Ducks have slipped back to 5-5 in Pac-12 play in a season where the conference is undeniably down, so Dana Altman's team badly needs to get on track over the next three weeks. Look for an increased sense of urgency to fuel Oregon here since its a big swing game considering it will be favored against Washington State this weekend and then can make significant closing statements in a four-game stretch against the league's top teams, USC, UCLA, Arizona State and Arizona. The Ducks can still rescue their season. It just has to start tonight against the sizzling Huskies, who have pulled off four straight league wins, three of them upsets. Look for Elijah Brown and Payton Pritchard to have big games and lay the points, riding Oregon.

Result: We got back on track to make it 4-for-5 on freebies after laying a million points with Villanova and watching them get dropped outright by St. John's. The Ducks restored order by stifling Washington 65-40. This was certainly a fun one to be on because there was never any doubt this was coming in over the final 10 minutes of action. This line went from -5 to -8 at one point, but Oregon covered the line shift comfortably.

THURSDAY'S BIG PAYDAY

The pick: South Dakota -9, South Dakota/IPFW OVER 154

The Mastodons have won consecutive games in Fort Wayne by a double-digits, but they're a team that hasn't fared well on the road since their up-tempo style doesn't travel as well, particularly against teams capable of filling it up themselves. The first meeting between these teams featured the Coyotes winning by 10 in Indiana on Jan. 11, but this return game should be higher-scoring, though likely with a different result. Ride South Dakota -9 and back the over for the in-game parlay.

Result: The Coyotes got up 21-3 and never trailed, pulling off a wire-to-wire act after scoring the first 11 points. Their second-half lead never dipped below double-digits, so we were never in danger of losing the cover and the over came in late since IPFW fought to lose 86-69. The teams combined for 87 second-half points to deliver on the total portion of the in-game parlay.

LOCK THAT DIDN'T CLICK

The pick: Arizona -9

This is a golden opportunity for the Wildcats to show that the next 6 weeks will be different than the first few months of the season. UCLA has the look of a 10 seed that's going to struggle to make the NCAA Tournament this season, while U of A can challenge for a spot on the top rung if they can get themselves straight. Expect that to begin with a strong effort here. Lay the points and ride Arizona, guaranteed.

Result: The Wildcats thought they could get by on talent alone, failing to play a lick of defense and putting multiple reasons why this has been perhaps Sean Miller's most trying year on full display. Despite the presence of a Top-5 lock in 7-footer DeAndre Ayton, the Wildcats are soft and inexcusably bad on defense. They lost focus late in the first half, allowing UCLA guard Jaylen Hands to hit three straight 3-pointers to help put this game away. At home, that they weren't good enough to put themselves in position to rescue this result speaks volumes about how much underachieving @APlayersProgram is currently doing in Tucson.

TOTAL RECALL

The pick: Gonzaga/Pacific OVER 145

Damon Stoudamire has Pacific playing a lot better than they have since moving from the Big West to the West Coast Conference, but I don't see them scaring the Zags like San Diego did Saint Mary's. Expect the Tigers to be proficient enough offensively to score with Gonzaga, in part because they won't be able to stop them. Take the over here.

Result: While I could whine about how Tra Holder's game-winner for ASU against USC prevented OT and left us a basket short on the over, I'll confess to whiffing on this one. Gonzaga spotted the danger of getting into a track meet with the Tigers and played deliberately, working clock and often kicking it back out to reset after obtaining second chances. They failed to cover, too, and came nowhere near our prediction as the Bulldogs pulled out a 71-61 win.

CARDIAC ATTACK

The pick: Middle Tennessee -19.5

The Owls haven't played many teams better than the Blue Raiders squad that they're visiting tonight. Texas Tech, Georgia State and UNLV each beat depleted Rice by over 20 points, and you should expect this second of three straight road games to feature a total disconnect. Lay the points and ride Middle Tennessee.

Result: This beat was horrible. Middle Tennessee rolled to a 17-point lead and knocked down 15 3-pointers, two of which came on the first possessions of the second half, putting it up 23 points and en route to the wildly lopsided result I expected. Although Rice hung around, the Blue Raiders went up 28 points with 4:37 left and got a 3-pointer from walk-on Chase Miller that set the building off in putting them up 23 with 1:21 remaining. Although the Owls hit a pair of free-throws with 32 seconds left, so long as MTSU milked the shot clock, this would wrap right there. Instead, the Blue Raiders wanted to get Miller one last look, and he took the shot with enough time for Rice to rebound, get down the court and put in a Najja Hunter layup at the buzzer. Final score: 94-75.

SWING AND A MISS

The pick: Duke +1.5/OVER 167

Losing to St. John's should be a major wake-up call for a Blue Devils squad that simply doesn't defend like they should. If going up against a rival in their house can't get them amped up after an unforgiveable loss in Madison Square Garden, Mike Krzyzewski has major issues on his hands. The Tar Heels will struggle to stop them and are overly reliant on Joel Berry. Ride Duke and the over for the in-game parlay.

Result: Maybe Mike Kryzezewski and Sean Miller can have conference call therapy, since they appear to be in the same boat in fielding incredibly talented teams that can't be bothered to defend. Joel Berry and Kenny Williams had great games, Grayson Allen struggled and the Blue Devils squandered a first-half lead after scoring 50 points over the first 20 minutes. They were held to 28 in the second half in part because they failed to gather defensive rebounds, allowing the Tar Heels multiple second-chance opportunities that made the Blue Devils work to do the one thing that doesn't come easily. The under coming in was a slap in the face as UNC prevailed 82-78.

PROOF OF CLAIRVOYANCE

The pick: UC-Santa Barbara +1.5

In a strange development given that that the winner in this battle of 7-2 Big West teams takes over sole possession of the conference lead, the top forwards for both teams will be sidelined. Chima Moneke and Jalen Canty each got suspended, but between those substractions, the visiting Gauchos have to like that trade off considering what a great rebounder/defender Moneke is. I don't see UC-Davis surviving his absence. Take the points and ride UC-Santa Barbara.

Result: This went as expected, since the Aggies couldn't defend without Moneke and got blitzed at home by the Gauchos. UCSB scored 49 first-half points and shot 56 percent from the floor. Nevada transfer Leland King had 19 points and 15 boards to help fill in for Canty. The Gauchos shot 11-for-20 from 3-point range an put the game away at the light.

Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

Odds for the college basketball national championship

Villanova 7-2? opened at 12-1

Michigan State 4-1? opened at 20-1

Duke 9-2? opened at 12-1

Virginia 7-1? opened at 30-1

Purdue 7-1? opened at 60-1

Kansas 20-1? opened at 12-1

**********

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: In a perfect world, where I made the decisions??

13) Every kid would learn basic life skills in high school: cooking, laundry, how to write a check, how to do a budget, the divorce laws.

12) We?d get rid of the designated hitter, once and for all.

11) NFL players wouldn?t have radios in their helmets; coaches have six days to prepare the players. Sunday should be the players? day to play.

10) Speaking of which, no Thursday NFL games, except for Week 1 and Thanksgiving Day.

9) Get rid of the electoral college; whichever presidential candidate gets the most votes, they win the election. Seems simple enough. I?ve felt this way about the electoral college since I was in high school, a very long time ago.

8) Kids could go straight from high school to the NBA or G-League, but if you go to college to play ball, then you?re not eligible for the draft for two years.

7) Major leagues would have a salary floor and a salary cap; none of this BS the Marlins are doing, dumping all your good players, insuring a 100-loss seasons not only this year but for the foreseeable future.

6) NBA playoff series would be two out of three until the Finals, which would be best-of-5. the way the NBA is now, the playoffs suck; who can beat Golden State four out of seven games?

5) Relief pitchers have to face at least two batters when they come in, instead of one; if MLB is really concerned about pace of play, nothing drags it down like left/right pitching changes. if a lefty reliever can?t get righty hitters out, then they shouldn?t be in the big leagues.

4) I?d be in favor of college basketball adopting the NBA?s 8-second rule for getting the ball over halfcourt; most anything that encourages pressing and a faster-paced game is a good thing.

3) I?d make cigarettes illegal; they?re known to cause cancer. What is good about them?

2) I?d make sure DirecTV picked up the Pac-12 Network. Its not too much to ask.

1? One news item:

Bad times at Colorado State: on Thursday, the basketball team boycotted practice because of growing frustration over lack of communication from the school about an investigation into coach Larry Eustachy?s treatment of players/staff.

Apparently the school wants to fire Eustachy, who makes around $950K a year; I?m guessing the delay is they?re making damn sure they can fire him for cause and not have to pay him.

NBA Game of the Day: Spurs at Warriors betting preview and odds
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Antonio Spurs at Golden State Warriors (-11, 215)

The Golden State Warriors still can't seem to keep their cool, but at least they're back in the win column. The Warriors will again attempt to keep their emotions in check when they host the San Antonio Spurs in a key Western Conference battle on Saturday.

Golden State general manager Bob Myers addressed the team prior to Thursday's game about the growing number of technical fouls the team is accumulating, and head coach Steve Kerr agreed that the team needs "to do a much better job of staying poised," but All-Star forward Draymond Green still went out on Thursday and earned his NBA-leading 14th technical foul. "Yeah, I don't know what to do at this point," Green told reporters. "It really don't matter what I agree with. I don't have no power in this situation. Yeah, I don't know what to do at this point. It is what it is." The Warriors still managed to skip past the Western Conference-worst Dallas Mavericks 121-103, but the Spurs present a different challenge. San Antonio snapped its own two-game slide while beginning a six-game road trip by blasting the Phoenix Suns 129-81 on Wednesday.

TV:
8:30 p.m. ET, ABC

LINE HISTORY:
The Warriors opened as 10-point home chalk and money coming in on the defending champs boosted that number up a full point to -11 at most shops. The total hit the board at 218 and has been bet down to 215.

POWER RANKINGS:
Spurs (-6.3) - Warriors (-12.1) + home court (-3) = Spurs -8.8

INJURY REPORT:

Spurs - PG Dejounte Murray (Out, Ankle), PG Tony Parker (Out, Back), SF Rudy Gay (Late February, Heel), SF Kawhi Leonard (Out Indefinitely, Quadricep).

Warriors - PF Jordan Bell (Mid-February, Ankle).

MATCHUP CHART:

1zflks4.jpg

ABOUT THE SPURS (35-21 SU, 29-25-2 ATS, 24-32 O/U):
Wednesday's contest matched the most one-sided loss in history for the Suns and one of the most complete performances for San Antonio, which held Phoenix to 34 percent from the floor. The one downside came in the second quarter, when starting point guard Dejounte Murray went down with an ankle injury. The 21-year-old is still getting used to leading the offense for the Spurs but scored 14 points on 7-of-12 shooting in 13 minutes before leaving on Wednesday and scored in double figures in six of the last eight games.

ABOUT THE WARRIORS (42-13 SU, 24-30-1 ATS, 28-27 O/U):
Whoever the Spurs start at point guard on Saturday will have to contend with Golden State's Stephen Curry, who breezed to 20 points on 7-of-12 shooting and eight assists in 30 minutes on Thursday. The Warriors fell behind by 10 points at the end of the first quarter in the win before outscoring Dallas 98-70 the rest of the way. "I think our talent just took over in the third quarter," Kerr told reporters. "We obviously had a lot more talent on the floor tonight than they did. Then Steph (Curry) and KD (Kevin Durant) got going, and they were hitting tough, contested shots."

TRENDS:

* Over is 5-1 in Spurs last 6 vs. a team with a winning straight up record.

* Over is 6-1 in Warriors last 7 home games vs. a team with a losing road record.

* Over is 4-0 in the last 4 meetings in Golden State.

* Favorite is 4-0 ATS in the last 4 meetings.

CONSENSUS:
Users are backing the road dog Spurs in this matchup, with 59 percent of pointspread picks. When it comes to the total, 60 percent of wagers are on the Over.

Saturday's Tip Sheet
February 9, 2018

Game of the Night: Spurs at Warriors (-11, 215) ? 8:30 PM EST

Golden State (42-13 SU, 24-30-1 ATS) avoided its first three-game losing streak of the season by rallying past Dallas on Thursday, 121-103 to cash as 14-point favorites. The defending champions trailed by 10 points after one quarter but stormed back to even the game at halftime, while outscoring the Mavs in the second half by 18. The Warriors knocked down 14 three-pointers, as Kevin Durant and Stephen Curry each drilled four treys apiece to bounce back from Tuesday?s 20-point home setback to Oklahoma City.

San Antonio (35-21 SU, 29-25-2 ATS) also faced a two-game skid heading into its previous contest, as the Spurs didn?t mess around in a 129-81 blasting of the Suns on Thursday. The Spurs easily cashed as 10-point road favorites, while taking firm control in the first half by outscoring the Suns, 69-31 in the opening 24 minutes. Perhaps the most impressive statistic for Gregg Popovich?s team was limiting Phoenix to 3-of-32 shooting from three-point range, while pulling off the four-game season sweep of the Suns.

The Warriors have captured six consecutive meetings with the Spurs since last season, including the four-game sweep in the Western Conference Finals. In the first matchup this season at the AT&T Center, the Warriors erased an early 19-point first quarter deficit to blow out the Spurs, 112-92. To put that in proper context, Golden State outscored San Antonio, 100-61 in the final 38:16 to easily cover as 8 ?-point favorites, while Curry, Durant, and Klay Thompson combined to drill 10 three-pointers.

The Spurs have been a solid defensive team on the highway by limiting 12 of the past 14 opponents to 100 points or less, but own a dreadful 2-8 SU record in the role of a road underdog. The Warriors haven?t helped backers of late by posting a 5-9 ATS mark the last 14 contests, while last covering consecutive games at Oracle Arena in late December in wins over Cleveland and Utah.

Red, White, and Blue Times Two

The Clippers and 76ers are each on the second end of a back-to-back set as the two squads hook up in Philadelphia. Los Angeles (28-25 SU, 29-23-1 ATS) started its seven-game winning streak with a bang by knocking off old friend Blake Griffin and Detroit on Friday, 108-95. The Clippers improved to 5-1 the last six games overall, while moving to 6-1 in the past seven contests away from Staples Center. Los Angeles and Philadelphia share identical 1-6 records with no rest this season, as the Clippers own a 1-5 road mark on the second of a back-to-back.

The 76ers (27-25 SU, 29-22-1 ATS) demolished the Pelicans from the start on Friday as Philadelphia led 26-6 in the first quarter. Brett Brown?s team moved its home winning streak to eight with the 100-82 blowout of New Orleans, while improving to 8-2 SU/ATS in its last 10 opportunities in the favorite role. The Sixers edged the Clippers at Staples Center in mid-November, 109-105 as two-point underdogs, while Philadelphia has covered in each of the past four meetings.

Hot and Cold

The Lakers (23-31 SU, 29-25 ATS) have caught fire of late by putting together a 12-4 SU/ATS the last 16 games, including a current four-game winning streak. Los Angeles pulled away from a short-handed Oklahoma City squad in Thursday?s 106-81 blowout as one-point home favorites, while winning its eighth consecutive game at Staples Center. The Lakers knocked off the Mavericks in their first matchup this season in mid-January, 107-101 in overtime, ending a 14-game skid to Dallas dating back to the start of the 2013-14 season.

The Mavericks (17-38 SU, 27-27-1 ATS) are going the wrong way of late by dropping seven of their past eight and 13 of their last 17 since the calendar shifted to January. Dallas has lost three straight home games, while scoring 97 points or fewer in each of those defeats, as the Mavs have struck the UNDER in seven consecutive contests at the American Airlines Center.

Something Has to Give

Both the Pelicans and Nets look to turn around their losing ways as they hook up at Barclays Center. New Orleans (28-26 SU, 26-27-1 ATS) was never in Friday?s contest at Philadelphia, as the Pelicans trailed by 32 heading into the fourth quarter of a 100-82 setback. The Pelicans suffered three straight losses for the second time this season, while falling to 1-5 SU/ATS the past six contests. New Orleans has captured seven of the last eight meetings with Brooklyn since March 2014, while ripping the Nets, 128-113 as nine-point home favorites in late December.

Brooklyn (19-37 SU, 33-23 ATS) has lost four in a row and eight of its previous nine games, in spite of covering in its past two defeats to Houston and Detroit. The Nets have struggled against Western Conference opponents at Barclays Center by compiling a 2-8 record with the only wins coming against Utah in mid-November and Minnesota in early January.

Three?s Not Allowed

Amazingly, Washington (31-24 SU, 25-30 ATS) has not lost three straight games this season, posting a perfect 8-0 record off consecutive defeats. The Wizards are in this situation again at the United Center on Saturday following losses to Philadelphia and Boston. Washington rallied to lead Boston late on Thursday, but the Celtics ultimately beat the Wizards in overtime, as Scott Brooks? team fell to 1-3 this season in games decided past regulation.

The Wizards have had their way the Bulls lately by winning four straight meetings since December 2016, but Chicago has covered in the past three matchups, including as eight-point ?dogs in a 114-110 loss at Capital One Arena on New Year?s Eve. The Bulls (19-35 SU, 30-23-1 ATS) play with no rest following Friday?s win against Minnesota, as Chicago has stumbled to a 2-7 record on the second of a back-to-back set this season.

Dinero Tracker - Feb. 10
February 10, 2018

Read the Dinero Tracker's mission statement here
Last night's ATS Records
NBA: 7-2 | NCAA BB: 3-6

The NBA continues to be great, while college is slip, sliding away. The NBA lock is now 18-for-26 (69%- nice!) since Jan. 11. Here's Thursday's recap, complete with some of the highlights (and lowlights):

SATURDAY'S FREE SELECTION

The pick: Texas Tech ML -117

This is a massive game for both programs, each of which have illusions of making the NCAA Tournament. The Red Raiders have won five straight and have already made it to 20 wins, so pulling off a victory at home here would do wonders for Kansas State's resume, while a loss would drop them to 6-6 in Big 12 play. Look for a competitive game here, but expect rebounding to make the difference as the visitors pull off a win in the Little Apple. Ride Texas Tech on the money line to avoid laying the point on the road.

FRIDAY'S FREE SELECTION

The pick: Timberwolves -7

Jimmy Butler is back in town playing the best basketball of his career, and since LeBron James got the last word in Wednesday's classic OT game in Cleveland, I don't think a hangover ensues for the Timberwolves. The Bulls have a lot of moving parts keeping them from gaining a rhythm, from Zach LaVine still working his way back to Kris Dunn barely out of concussion protocol and still not playing. Lauri Markkanen returns from paternity leave, so the expectation here is that the Timberwolves will be able to put this game away. Ride Minnesota and lay the points.

Result: I don't like losing freebies, especially when up double-digits at halftime. The Wolves scored 40 second-quarter points and led by 11 in Chicago, but were outscored 33-19 in an ugly third quarter and then couldn't stop Zach LaVine from endearing himself to his new fans in the fourth, allowing him to score 15 of his 35 points in the final 12 minutes. At one point, the Bulls were down 17, so there will be no apologies offered for this call. Butler scored 37 points, one off his season-high.

FRIDAY'S LOCK

The pick: Rockets/Nuggets OVER 222

The Nuggets struck out in their pursuit of Memphis wing Tyreke Evans, but should still have enough firepower to run with the Rockets in Houston. Denver is deep and has Will Barton and Gary Harris playing at a high level, so expect them to hang with a fast pace. Ride the over for Friday's NBA guaranteed winner.

Result: This total was cleared by a dozen, clinched with 1:24 left as the Nuggets finally reached the century mark in a dreadful 130-104 loss. Will Barton needs to bring it every night, like the Rockets do. The Warriors should win the Western Conference finals, but they'll have a battle on their hands. Those boys are serious.

LOCK THAT DIDN'T CLICK

The pick: Brown/Cornell OVER 154

Neither of these teams are well-equipped to play defense, so they often don't bother. Brown has been involved in shootouts throughout the Ivy League season, Weill Cornell has gifted scores that they can depend on the stretch a defense. Count on both teams getting into the 80s and ride the over, guaranteed.

Result: Unfortunately, Brown failed to show up. Que paso? The Bears shot 31 percent Top scorer Desmond Cambridge shot 9-for-24, good for 36 percent, and was the most lethal Brown scorer. Sometimes life doesn't go your way. Or math. Step it up, Brown. The pace was there.

TOTAL RECALL

The pick: Penn/Dartmouth OVER 138

The Big Green were able to score effectively enough to notch a pair of covers last week, losing at Cornell and Columbia. They're home for this one, but take a step up in class with the first-place Quakers coming into town. The unbeaten Ivy League leaders are shooting the ball extremely well and face a defense that can't cover. Ride Penn and the over for the in-game parlay.

Result: Dartmouth shot 28 percent and hung around. So, yes, I lost this both ways. Because Dartmouth shot 28 percent and hung around. 11-for-42 from the field. And hung around. There are ways you can't win.

SWING AND A MISS

The pick: Princeton +2

The Tigers come into Cambridge looking to bounce back from a blowout home loss to Penn by getting past a Crimson team that has won five of the last six in the Ancient Eight. The Crimson have persevered despite point guard Bryce Aiken, the team's most dynamic player, being healthy enough to rely on. He was listed as doubtful for this one, but since he's not 100 percent, the call here is that the visitors will walk out of Lavietes Pavilion with a win. Take the bucket and ride Princeton.

Result: Harvard won by 15. Aiken didn't play. Christian Juzang is running with his opportunity.

PROOF OF CLAIRVOYANCE

The pick: Heat PK'em/UNDER 199

Expect a playoff atmosphere in South Florida tonight for Dwyane Wade's return. The Bucks are down a number of regulars, so even with Jabari Parker back, Giannis Antetokounmpo will have his hands full against one of the league's top defensive teams. Ride Miami in this pick'em and back the under for the in-game parlay. ?

Result: Spot on. Google details.

Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

Odds for the 2018 Stanley Cup playoffs:

5-1? Tampa Bay Lightning

6-1? Nashville Predators, Las Vegas Golden Knights

8-1? Pittsburgh Penguins

10-1? Boston Bruins

12-1? Toronto, Washington, Winnipeg

16-1? Anaheim Ducks

**********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a college basketball Saturday

13) Oregon State 97, Washington 94 2OT? Just when the Huskies were sneaking towards the bubble, Stephen Thompson Jr hit the game winner with 0:00.3 left. Thompson?s dad played for Syracuse, where he was a teammate of Washington coach Mike Hopkins.

12) Texas A&M 85, Kentucky 74? Wildcats lost their 3rd straight game; they?re 3-5 in last eight games- they?re shooting 28.7% on arc in SEC games. A&M won six of last eight games; they have an interesting resume; several quality wins, but also a 5-game losing streak in January.

11) Virginia Tech 61, Virginia 60 OT? Hokies won five of last six games; this win is especially important for them because their non-conference schedule was 341st in country, which means it was really weak. This was Virginia?s first loss since Dec 5 at West Virginia.

10) Upsets of the Day:
UL-Monroe (+13.5) 90, Georgia State 82 OT
Virginia Tech (+12) 61, Virginia 60 OT
Oklahoma State (+12) 88, West Virginia 85
Cal-Northridge (+11.5) 77, Hawai?i 71
DePaul (+9) 80, Providence 63
Northern Illinois (+8.5) 90, Buffalo 88 OT
Fordham (+8) 80, Duquesne 57

9) Baylor 80, Kansas 64? Right now, with six games left, Texas Tech is atop Big X at 9-3, with Jayhawks one game behind. Kansas won the last 13 Big X regular season titles.

8) Michigan State 68, Purdue 65? Rough week for the senior-laden Boilermakers, who lost to Buckeyes/Spartans by combined total of four points. Miles Bridges hit the game-winner with 0:03 left to send everyone home happy in East Lansing.

7) Xavier 72, Creighton 71? Controversial ending, with refs calling foul on the Bluejays with 0:00.3 left? marginal calls like that don?t often go against the home folks. Goodin scored a career-high 17 points for the Musketeers.

6) Boston College 72, Miami 70- Vastly-improved Eagles are 5-7 in ACC this year, after being 10-62 in ACC games the previous four years.

5) Colorado State 90, San Jose State 79? Rams suspended interim head coach Steve Barnes just before this game; a 30-year old assistant was named the newest interim coach. Apparently the players like this guy; they doused him with water bottles after this win snapped the Rams? losing streak at seven games.

4) Arizona State 88, UCLA 79? Sun Devils got their first Pac-12 weekend sweep in three seasons under coach Bobby Hurley- they?re also over .500 (7-6) in Pac-12 for first time this season.

3) North Carolina 96, NC State 89? Since 2002, Tar Heels are now 13-0 in game following a win over Duke; you?d think that next game would be a trap game, but not for Carolina.

2) Montana 71, Sacramento State 69 OT? Griz is 13-0 in Big Sky, narrowly avoiding an upset loss here. Hornets led by 9 with 11:23 left, by 3 with 1:45 left.

1? UNLV 85, Wyoming 70? I had fun watching this game in person; Rebels jumped out to 19-2 lead, then the natives got restless when Cowboys briefly grabbed lead in second half. UNLV held Wyoming star James to 6-23 shooting? he is 15-45 from floor since the Cowboys played three consecutive OT games Jan 24-27-31.

NBA Game of the Day: Cavaliers at Celtics betting preview and odds
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cleveland Cavaliers at Boston Celtics (-4.5, 213)

The Cleveland Cavaliers are expected to debut their four newcomers when they visit the rival Boston Celtics on Sunday afternoon. Playing without newly acquired players George Hill, Jordan Clarkson, Larry Nance Jr. and Rodney Hood - each of whom was picked up in the team's series of trades before Thursday's deadline - the Cavaliers rolled to a 123-107 win at Atlanta on Friday.

"It felt like we played together," LeBron James told reporters after recording his 10th triple-double of the season with 22 points, a career-high 19 assists and 12 rebounds. "Offensively and defensively the communication was really high. The ball was moving around. The ball was popping and everybody felt like they were in a good rhythm." The rout of the Hawks gave Cleveland consecutive victories for the first time since the middle of December and it will try to spoil the party in Boston on Sunday, when Celtics great Paul Pierce has his number retired. The Celtics sandwiched a pair of losses around an overtime win at Washington and know they need to do some homework to get ready for Cleveland's new crop of players. "All the film goes out the window, I'll tell you that," All-Star guard Kyrie Irving told reporters after Friday's 97-91 loss to Indiana in the opener of a three-game homestand. "So, I think everyone's kind of at a high anticipation of what they'll look like."

TV:
3:30 p.m. ET, ABC

LINE HISTORY:
The Celtics opened this big matchup versus the new-look LeBron and Co. as four-point home favorites and have been bet up to the current number of -4.5. The total hit the board at 213.5 and has been bet down slightly to the current number of 213.

POWER RANKINGS:
Cavaliers (-2.3) - Celtics (-7.5) + home court (-3) = Celtics -8.2

INJURY REPORT:

Cavaliers - PG J. Clarkson (Probable Sunday, trade), PG G. Hill (Probable Sunday, trade), SG R. Hood (Probable Sunday, trade), PF L. Nance Jr. (Probable Sunday, trade), PF K. Love (Late March, finger).

Celtics - PG S. Larkin (Late February, knee), PG M. Smart (Mid February, hand), SF G. Hayward (Out indefinitely, ankle).

MATCHUP CHART:

rvj029.jpg

ABOUT THE CAVALIERS (32-22, 16-37-1 ATS, 26-26-2 O/U):
Kyle Korver was one of many Cleveland players who likely sweated out the trade deadline and the veteran celebrated the fact that he got to stick around by pouring in a season-high 30 points at Atlanta. "Man, the ball was moving tonight," Korver - who is 11-for-19 from 3-point range during the two-game winning streak - told reporters. "I don't know the last time I shot that many shots in a game." Korver also matched a season high with 32 minutes played but will cede some of his playing time to the imports, particularly Hood, who averaged 16.8 points while shooting 38.9 percent from beyond the arc in 39 games with Utah.

ABOUT THE CELTICS (40-17, 34-21-2 ATS, 28-29 O/U):
Boston, which fell percentage points behind Toronto in the race for the top spot in the Eastern Conference, was held to 98 points or fewer in regulation in each of its last four games and it shot 38.2 percent from the field in Friday's loss. "I thought we started the game really going through the motions and I thought they started the game really playing with great force and purpose," coach Brad Stevens told the media, touching on a season-long issue for a team that has been forced to rally from behind in many games. Irving led the way with 21 points while backup Terry Rozier, who filled in admirably when Irving was sidelined recently with a quad injury, shot 1-for-11 off the bench.

TRENDS:

* Cavaliers are 3-14 ATS in their last 17 road games.
* Celtics are 5-1 ATS in their last six games playing on one days rest.
* Under is 7-1-1 in Cavaliers last nine games vs. Atlantic Division opponents.
* Under is 5-1 in Celtics last six home games.
* Road team is 13-3-1 ATS in the last 17 meetings.
* Under is 8-2 in the last 10 meetings in Boston.

CONSENSUS:
Early bettors are giving the edge to LeBron and his new-look Cavaliers in this big Eastern Conference showdown, with 60 percent of wagers on Cleveland. When it comes to the total, a whopping 71 percent of wagers are on the Over.

Game of the Night - Dallas at Houston (-13.5, 216.5), NBATV, 7:05 ET

Houston has won 11 of 12 since Jan. 18, a run that includes wins over the Warriors, Timberwolves, Spurs, Cavs and Heat. They only fell in New Orleans on the night DeMarcus Cousins tore his ACL, and nearly forced overtime in that game. Although Golden State entered Sunday with the NBA?s best record courtesy of two more wins, the argument can certainly be made that no one is playing better than the Rockets.

Although there were rumors that Ryan Anderson was available, Houston kept its roster intact at the trade deadline, but got stronger with the news that Joe Johnson had agreed to sign there once his buyout in Sacramento becomes official.

Brandan Wright, an athletic forward/center who has battled injuries in Memphis, agreed to a buyout with the Grizzlies and is also going to spend the next few months helping the Rockets compete for an NBA title.

In the most recent Westgate Superbook odds update, the Rockets were second behind the Warriors to win the Western Conference (11/4) and also had the second-best odds to win the championship (5/1).

Barring injuries, I can?t imagine the odds becoming more lucrative than they are today since James Harden and Chris Paul have proven they?ll be able to co-exist. Clint Capela has made a run at an All-Star berth since Houston has amassed the best record in franchise history through their first 54 games in part because they?ve only lost once with him joining Harden and Paul in the lineup.

Houston will likely finish as Sunday?s heaviest favorite since the Mavs have already ruled out Dirk Nowitzki, Wes Matthews and J.J. Barea, resting their veterans. Harrison Barnes missed time with a sprained ankle but returned with an effective game last night in a home win over the Lakers, so it remains to be seen how many minutes he?ll wind up logging.

Dallas defeated L.A. 130-123 behind Nowitzki?s season-high 22 points and Barnes? 21 in his first game since Feb. 3. Doug McDermott, acquired from New York at the deadline in a three-way deal that sent Devin Harris to Denver and moved Emmanuel Mudiay to the Knicks, was included in the closing lineup for Saturday night?s win and should play a large role here. Dennis Smith, Jr., Yogi Ferrell and Kyle Collinsworth will likely log the bulk of the backcourt minutes, while forwards Dwight Powell and Maxi Kleber will join center Salah Mejri to round out the frontcourt rotation.

The Mavs have dropped the first two meetings against their Southwest Division rivals, falling 107-91 and 104-97. Both games went under the posted total. Houston has won six consecutive meetings against Dallas, last losing in April of 2016. The Rockets have won their last four home games against the Mavs, last losing in ?15.

Cavs clash with Celtics

There might be a time in today?s game in Boston where Cavs forward LeBron James is surrounded by a unit on which rookie Cedi Osman is the player he?s most familiar with.

That won?t be the case out of the gate, since Tyronn Lue has already committed to a starting lineup and will bring three of his four newly acquired weapons off the bench.

George Hill, a point guard with plenty of playoff experience who was brought into help upgrade the Cavs? porous perimeter defense, will get the nod next to J.R. Smith in the backcourt. James and Osman will be joined by Tristan Thompson up front. Rodney Hood, Larry Nance, Jr. and Jordan Clarkson will come off the bench. It?s certainly a disadvantage to have to integrate so many new pieces on the road against the Eastern Conference-leading Celtics, but the Cavs will at least have depth they didn?t enjoy in Friday?s 123-107 win in Atlanta. Jeff Green, Kyle Korver and little-used newcomer John Holland out of Boston U. were Lue?s three most viable options off the bench.

He?ll now be able to counter the Celtics? depth, but it will be on James to make sure everyone around him gets comfortable. Coming off a game where he displayed an ability to do just that in dishing out 19 assists, it would be wise to take any props involving the dispensing of dimes since he?s been credit with 34 over the past two games.

Boston looks like it will be dueling with Toronto for not only the Atlantic Division lead, but the top seed in the Eastern Conference. The Cavs should now have enough pieces to hold off the Pacers, Bucks and Pistons in the Central Division, but it?s hard to imagine them rising above the East?s No. 3 seed.

This nationally-televised contest (ABC) will be the final one between these teams until the postseason. Cleveland won the first contest way back on Oct. 17 in the season opener, while Boston won the most recent meeting, 102-88, on Jan. 3. Marcus Smart remains sidelined for the Celtics, who come off a home loss to Indiana on Friday night.

Injury report

The Knicks will likely see Mudiay debut at Indiana, but with Kristaps Porzingis sidelined, are still waiting to feature Enes Kanter in addition to Michael Beasley. The Turkish center is unlikely to get back into the lineup due to mouth surgery that should keep him out at the Pacers. Indiana lost point guard Darren Collison to arthroscopic surgery earlier in the week and have seen Cory Joseph struggle as his replacement.

Russell Westbrook and Carmelo Anthony continue to nurse ankle sprains that forced them to sit out Thursday night?s loss to the Lakers, and no definitive word has come down on their availability for Sunday?s home date against the Grizzlies. Memphis will see Tyreke Evans return after it attempted to trade him.

The Jazz own the league?s longest winning streak at eight games, but may not be at full strength for tonight?s visit to Portland. Ricky Rubio (hip) is listed as questionable, while the newly acquired Jae Crowder is expected to debut. Utah waived Derrick Rose, who is now weighing his options.
