Friday?s 6-pack

Six college basketball teams with the biggest budgets last season:

6) Arizona Wildcats $11.8M

5) Indiana Hoosiers $12.1M

4) Syracuse Orangemen $13.9M

3) Duke Blue Devils $17.9M

2) Louisville Cardinals $17.9M

1) Kentucky Wildcats $18.9M

Quote of the Day

?The desire to get back to the excitement of March is something that?s been driving us since the summer,. Can we get ourselves back in that position and take the next step? We were two minutes and a four-point lead away from getting to the second weekend. Simple things like not getting a free throw or a rebound probably cost us the Sweet 16. That?s why this team is laser-focused on every detail.?
Rhode Island basketball coach Danny Hurley

Friday?s quiz

Where did Baker Mayfield play college football before transferring to Oklahoma?

Thursday?s quiz

Butler University is located in Indianapolis

Wednesday?s quiz

Bud Grant is the only person to be head coach in a Super Bowl and also play in the NBA; he coached the Vikings and played for the Minneapolis Lakers.

*****************************

Friday?s List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind??

13) Georgia Tech 55, Syracuse 51? The current state of college hoop; total of only 13 players played in this game? four of the 13 kids played the whole 40:00.

Lot of teams have almost no depth, partially because of the transfer epidemic (most transfers have to sit out a year) and injuries.

Teams combined to shoot 10-36 on the arc in this game; had to be lot of tired legs out there.

12) Is Wyoming the most fun team in the country? Cowboys are 15-7, 6-0 in overtime games this season; they won their last three games in OT, with two of those going double OT.

Wyoming?s starting guards are a freshman/sophomore, but their two forwards are their two best players- Justin James, who has 91 points in his last three games, and Hayden Dalton, who played 46:00 twice in their last three games. Good passer, solid glue guy.

11) If you like to shoot the ball a lot when you play pickup ball, then Central Michigan?s Josh Kozinski is your new hero.

Against Northern Illinois Wednesday, Kozinski played 27:00, scored 24 points? he made 8-15 on the arc, but did almost nothing else. One rebound, one assist, one steal. A specialist.

For the season, Kozinski has taken 91 3-pointers, five 2-point shots, 17 foul shots.

10) Northern Arizona is a bad, obscure team; they?re 3-18, 1-9 in the Big Sky- they even lost to an NAIA school named Embry-Riddle, which I think used to be a pilot?s school. NAU is 10-36 in conference games the last three years.

But its not wise to bet against the Lumberjacks; they covered six of their last seven games, are 7-3 vs spread in Big Sky games, 4-1 on the road. Go figure.

9) Cal-Irvine 75, Long Beach State 68? 49ers led by 7 with 12:50 left in game Wednesday, but fell apart in last few minutes and are now 13-13, 6-3 in conference.

Long Beach has a starting forward, I won?t mention his name, but the kid went 0-7 on the foul line, 3-9 from the floor and turned ball over three times. He is shooting 65.9% from the line for the year, so going 0-7 on the line in a home game is odd.

8) Pitt Panthers are 0-10 in the ACC, but they?ve covered their last five games.

7) Villanova will probably be a #1 seed in the NCAA?s, but since 2010, Wildcats have made the Sweet 16 once, when they won the national title two years ago.

Villanova won five of last seven first round games, but is 1-4 in last five second round games.

6) Arizona will also be a highly-seeded team; they?ve won 19 of last 20 games, but the second weekend of the NCAA?s hasn?t been kind to the Wildcats.

Since 2002, Arizona is 5-4 in Sweet 16 games, 0-5 in Elite 8 games. If you pick the Wildcats to get to the Final Four, do so at your own risk.

5) Apparently when the Patriots won the Super Bowl LY, they had rings made up with 283 diamonds in each ring, which seems excessive, but the ?28-3? is reference to the score Atlanta led last year?s game, before things fell apart for them.

Falcons? owner Arthur Blank isn?t happy about the ?283 diamond? thing:

?I said to Robert (Kraft), ?You didn?t have to do the 28-3 in the ring. It kind of pissed me off.?

Alrighty then.

4) If you like math, that adds up to 14,999 diamonds just for the 53 rings that went to players. If Mr Blank owned a jewelry store instead of Home Depot, he might not be so mad.

3) New Orleans Pelicans got Nikola Mirotic and a 2nd-round pick from Chicago in exchange for a 1st-round pick, Omer Asik, Jameer Nelson and Tony Allen, who will be waived soon? his acquisition just balanced out cap numbers. Mirotic replaces the injured DeMarcus Cousins.

2) Thursday night?s college basketball upsets:
Cleveland State (+9.5) 77, Wright State 74
Citadel (+9) 80, Wofford 78
Temple 81 (+6), Wichita State 79 OT

1) One of the highlights for me every fall is when the Blue Ribbon Yearbook comes in the mail in October- it is an encyclopedia of college basketball.

This fall, their Newcomer of the Year: Michael Porter Jr of Missouri

Blue Ribbon?s Player of the Year: Bonzie Colson of Notre Dame

Missouri gave Porter?s father a coaching job when they signed the son and his brother, but Porter Jr played two minutes in the season opener before a back injury ended his season.

Colson got hurt and hasn?t played since December 30 and is likely done for the year. Notre Dame lost its last six games- they also have other injuries.

Even the college basketball encyclopedia couldn?t foresee some of this season?s events.

Friday's Tip Sheet
February 2, 2018

Game of the Night: Heat at 76ers ? 8:00 PM EST

These two Eastern Conference squads are hooking up for the first time this season as the home team captured all four matchups last season. Miami (29-22 SU, 24-24-3 ATS) still leads the Southeast division in spite of Wednesday?s 91-89 setback at Cleveland. The Heat managed a narrow cover as 2 ?-point underdogs, but Erik Spoelstra?s club shot a dismal 3-of-28 from three-point range and 14-of-25 from the foul line.

Philadelphia (24-24 SU, 26-21-1 ATS) returns home from a 1-3 road swing, as the 76ers hit the highway again on Saturday to face Indiana. The Sixers began their recent away trip with an impressive 97-78 blowout of the Spurs, but dropped three straight to close it out by falling at Oklahoma City, Milwaukee, and Brooklyn. Philadelphia?s defense was lit up in each of the past three losses, allowing at least 107 points each time, while giving up 116 points to Brooklyn on Wednesday after the Nets posted 97 points or fewer in their previous three games.

The 76ers compiled a perfect 5-0 SU/ATS record at Wells Fargo Center in January, including victories over San Antonio and Toronto. Miami?s offense tries to get on track following five consecutive games scoring 95 points or less, while finishing UNDER the total in each of those contests. Following Wednesday?s cover at Cleveland, the Heat have compiled an impressive 9-2 ATS record in its past 11 games away from American Airlines Arena.

Portland Power

A three-game skid in mid-January is in the rear-view mirror for the Blazers (29-22 SU, 25-21-5 ATS), who have won seven of their past eight games. The latest victory during this current four-game hot streak came in Wednesday?s 124-108 blowout of the Bulls as eight-point home favorites. C.J. McCollum blew up for 50 points on 18-of-25 shooting for Portland, who led 43-19 after the first quarter. Portland embarks on a three-game road swing against Eastern Conference foes, starting in Toronto.

The Raptors (34-16 SU, 26-24 ATS) return home with no rest following Thursday?s 122-119 defeat at Washington as four-point road favorites. Toronto has posted an 0-3 SU/ATS record in its last three tries in games on the second of a back-to-back set, including a home setback last month to Miami. The Raptors are facing their fifth consecutive Western Conference team at home, winning three of the past four games. Toronto seeks the season sweep of Portland after beating the Blazers at the Moda Center, 99-85 in October as four-point underdogs.

Kings for Another Day?

Sacramento (16-34 SU, 21-26-3 ATS) is staring at another draft lottery appearance for the 12th consecutive season. However, the Kings are coming off a successful end to their six-game road trip by winning three of the final four contests, including Wednesday?s triumph at New Orleans. Sacramento did an excellent job cashing tickets by covering in four of the last five games, including outright victories over the Heat and Pelicans as 9+ point ?dogs.

The Kings host the defending champion Warriors (40-11 SU, 22-28-1 ATS), who are fresh off their worst loss of the season. Utah thumped Golden State on Wednesday, 129-99 as the Warriors allowed the Jazz to shoot 58% from the floor. Golden State has yet to beat Sacramento this season, albeit only the second meeting between these two northern California squads. The Kings held off the Warriors as 13-point ?dogs at Oracle Arena in late November, 110-106 to pick up their fourth cover in the last five meetings with Golden State. However, Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant each sat out for the Warriors that night, but Golden State carries a 6-12 ATS record this season as a favorite of 11 points or more

Hornets? Best?

Charlotte (21-29 SU, 21-25-4 ATS) put together one of its top offensive performances of the season in Wednesday?s 123-110 victory at Atlanta as 2 ?-point favorites. Not only did the Hornets beat the Hawks for the third time this season, but Charlotte knocked down 17 three-pointers, including nine from Kemba Walker to go along with his 38 points. The Hornets own a 3-4 record this season following an output of at least 120 points, while compiling a dreadful 2-11 mark the last 13 games off a victory.

The next test for the Hornets is hosting a Pacers? (29-23 SU, 28-24 ATS) squad that beat Charlotte on Monday, 105-96 as 1 ?-point favorites. Indiana finished off a sweep of its three-game homestand in Wednesday?s 105-101 win over Memphis, although the Pacers failed to cash as 8 ?-point favorites. The Pacers have split their last six games away from Bankers Life Fieldhouse, while dropping their last three visits to Charlotte.

Struck Down

Oklahoma City (30-22 SU, 22-30 ATS)
was rolling by winning eight consecutive games, but are nursing a two-game skid following last-minute losses at Washington and Denver. In Thursday?s setback to the Nuggets, the Thunder erased a 20-point third quarter deficit to tie the game late at 124-124 on a Paul George three-pointer. However, the Nuggets needed one second to win it as Gary Harris drilled a trey at the buzzer to beat the Thunder, 127-124 as OKC failed to cash as 1 ?-point favorites.

The Thunder have won five straight contests at Chesapeake Energy Arena as OKC welcomes in New Orleans (27-23 SU, 25-24-1 ATS), who continues life without DeMarcus Cousins. Since the All-Star forward went down with an Achilles? tear against Houston last Friday, the Pelicans are 0-2 SU/ATS with home losses to the Clippers and Kings. New Orleans has responded in the role of an underdog recently by winning outright in its last three opportunities, while knocking off OKC in its first matchup this season as three-point ?dogs, 114-107 in November.

Fast Break

-- The Celtics have defeated the Hawks twice in Atlanta this season as the two clubs hook up in Boston. Kyrie Irving is questionable with a quad injury that kept him sidelined in Wednesday?s blowout of the Knicks, as Boston owns a 3-1 SU and 4-0 ATS record the past four games. The Hawks have won only four of 24 games away from Philips Arena, including a 1-11 mark the past 12 road contests.

-- Both the Lakers and Nets are seeking their 20th wins of the season tonight at Barclays Center. Brooklyn snapped a four-game skid by knocking off Philadelphia as seven-point home ?dogs, 116-108 on Wednesday, while the Lakers were blown out by the Magic, 127-105 as short road favorites. Los Angeles topped Brooklyn in the first matchup at Staples Center in November, 124-112, as the Lakers are 4-1 in the past five meetings with the Nets.

-- The Knicks finish off a brutal travel stretch by playing in their 10th different city since January 15. New York owns a 4-5 record following Wednesday?s 30-point setback at Boston as the Knicks face the Bucks for the first time this season in Milwaukee. The Bucks play with no rest after getting blown out at Minnesota last night, but Milwaukee has fared well on the second of a back-to-back set by owning a 7-3 SU and 7-2-1 ATS record.

-- The Jazz have picked up some momentum of late by pulling off three straight victories, including wins over the Raptors and Warriors. Utah heads to Phoenix as a road favorite as the Suns defeated the Jazz in late October, 97-88. Phoenix ended a five-game skid in Wednesday?s blowout of Dallas, as the Suns seek consecutive home wins for the first time late October.

DeRozan, Raptors roll past Blazers, improve to 20-4 at home
February 2, 2018

TORONTO (AP) DeMar DeRozan scored 35 points, Jonas Valanciunas had 18 and the Toronto Raptors beat Portland 130-105 on Friday night, their sixth straight win over the Trail Blazers.

Fred VanVleet scored 16 points, Kyle Lowry had 15 and Pascal Siakam 13 as the Raptors improved their home record to 20-4, the best mark in the NBA.

DeRozan made 11 of 22 shots and matched his career-high by making six 3-pointers. He finished 6 for 10 from long range.

The Raptors made a season high 19 3-pointers. Toronto shot 19 for 40 from behind the arc, with nine players making at least one 3-pointer.

Damian Lillard scored 32 points, becoming the fastest player in franchise history to reach 10,000 for his career, but Portland's four-game winning streak was snapped. The Blazers have lost five of their past seven on the road.

WARRIORS 119, KINGS 104

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Kevin Durant scored 13 of his 33 points in the second quarter and matched his season-high with six 3-pointers, and Golden State held on to beat Sacramento.

Three nights after getting blown out in Utah while suffering their worst loss of the season, the defending NBA champs looked a little sluggish early before pulling away to even the season series with Sacramento and give coach Steve Kerr his 248th career victory.

Golden State also improved to 11-0 in games following losses while spoiling Sacramento coach Dave Joeger's return to the bench.

Sacramento trailed by 14 before pulling to 89-88 with 7:55 remaining following three consecutive baskets by Buddy Hield.

BUCKS 92, KNICKS 90

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Giannis Antetokounmpo made a driving layup with 1.9 seconds remaining after Jabari Parker chipped in with 12 points in his first game in nearly a year, lifting Milwaukee over New York.

Antetokounmpo, who sprained his left ankle late in Thursday night's loss to Minnesota, showed no ill effects and led all scorers with 29 points.

Parker hadn't played since tearing his left ACL on Feb. 8, 2017, in a game against Miami. He made 4 of 7 shots over nearly 15 minutes as a reserve.

Enes Kanter had 17 points and 18 rebounds to lead the Knicks, who were coming off a 103-73 loss to Boston on Wednesday night. Kristaps Porzingis also had 17 points.

CELTICS 119, HAWKS 110

BOSTON (AP) - Terry Rozier had a career-high 31 points and seven rebounds in his second NBA start, Jayson Tatum added a career-high 27 points and short-handed Boston beat Atlanta.

Rozier started in place of the injured Kyrie Irving. The third-year guard became the second player in league history with a triple-double in his first start, totaling 17 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists in Wednesday's blowout of the Knicks.

Irving missed his second straight game with a right quad contusion that he suffered in Monday's win at Denver and was one of four Boston players who sat with injuries on Friday.

Jaylen Brown scored 19 points and Al Horford had 17 with seven assists to help lead Boston to its fourth win in five tries.

Taruean Prince had a career-high 31 points and eight rebounds to lead the Hawks, who have lost five of six. Dennis Schroder added 25 points and Marco Belinelli had 15.

PELICANS 114, THUNDER 100

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Anthony Davis scored 43 points to help New Orleans beat Oklahoma City.

Davis made 17 of 34 shots and had 10 rebounds, and E'Twaun Moore added 26 points for the Pelicans.

New Orleans had lost two straight since All-Star DeMarcus Cousins was lost for the season with a left Achilles tendon rupture. They righted the ship by shooting 51 percent from the field against the Thunder.

Oklahoma City's Russell Westbrook had 16 points, 14 assists and 10 rebounds for his 16th triple-double of the season. Steven Adams had 23 points and 12 rebounds for the Thunder, who lost their third straight after an eight-game winning streak.

JAZZ 129, SUNS 97

PHOENIX (AP) - Donovan Mitchell scored 40 points, one shy of his career high, and Utah beat Phoenix to win its fourth in a row.

The Jazz rookie sensation made 14 of 19 shots and a career-best seven 3s in nine attempts. It was the sixth game of at least 30 points in his young NBA career.

Ricky Rubio had 14 points, nine assists and six rebounds for the Jazz. Joe Ingles added 16 points, including 4-of-6 3s, and Derrick Favors had 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Josh Jackson led the Suns with 20 points. Devin Booker, still bothered by bruised ribs, scored 18 points for Phoenix but on 7-of-24 shooting.

The Jazz, who hadn't played since their 30-point home win over Golden State on Tuesday night, opened a four-game trip in dominating fashion.

HORNETS 133, PACERS 126

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Kemba Walker scored 41 points on 11-for-22 shooting and Charlotte beat Indiana with the help of a record-setting first quarter.

Buoyed by 16 points from Nicolas Batum, the Hornets scored 49 points in the first, a franchise-best for a quarter. Charlotte connected on 7 of 11 from 3-point range and hit 19 of 23 from the field in that stretch. It marked the highest point total for an NBA team in any quarter this season.

Four other Hornets players scored in double digits, led by Batum's 31 points and Dwight Howard's 12 points and 11 rebounds. Charlotte won its second in a row.

Victor Oladipo had 35 points for the Pacers, who halted a three-game winning streak. Myles Turner added 19 points and 11 rebounds for Indiana.

76ERS 103, HEAT 97

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Joel Embiid opened the first set of back-to-back games in his NBA career with 17 points and 11 rebounds to help lead Philadelphia past Miami.

Dario Saric made his first five buckets and had 17 points and 10 rebounds. Ben Simmons, the rookie star who felt snubbed from the All-Star game, scored 20 points.

Embiid was expected to play Saturday at Indiana in what would be the first-ever back-to-back for the 7-foot-2 center, who missed his first two seasons with injuries.

Kelly Olynyk scored 19 points for the Heat, who outscored the 76ers 37-17 in the fourth quarter. Miami turned a 28-point hole into a four-point game with 25 seconds left.

LAKERS 102, NETS 99

NEW YORK (AP) - Brook Lopez scored 19 points in his return to Brooklyn, making Los Angeles' final basket with 1:28 left.

The Nets' career leader in scoring and blocked shots also had a big block down the stretch as the Lakers did just enough to avoid a third straight loss.

Julius Randle had 19 points and 12 rebounds, and Brandon Ingram added 16 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds for the Lakers. Josh Hart finished with 15 points and 14 rebounds, helping Los Angeles to a 56-38 advantage on the boards.

Spencer Dinwiddie had 23 points, nine assists and seven rebounds for the Nets. Rookie Jarrett Allen, playing the center spot Lopez occupied for nine seasons in New Jersey and later Brooklyn before getting dealt to Los Angeles in the trade that brought D'Angelo Russell to Brooklyn, had a season-best 20 points.

Sunday?s 6-pack

These are only six guys since 1970 who played in both the NFL and major leagues; this excludes the 1987 NFL replacement games during the players? strike:

DJ Dozier

Drew Henson

Chad Hutchinson

Bo Jackson

Brian Jordan

Deion Sanders

Quote of the Day

?We would have taken a win if it was in an empty gym. Thank God January is over.?
Chris Mullin, after St John?s won its first game since Dec 20

Sunday?s quiz
Who are the only two head coaches to win the Rose Bowl and the Super Bowl?

Saturday?s quiz
Donald Trump owned the New Jersey Generals in the USFL in the 80?s.

Friday?s quiz
Baker Mayfield played college football at Texas Tech before transferring to Oklahoma.

*****************

Sunday?s List of 13: Wrapping up a basketball Saturday??.

13) Oklahoma State 84, Kansas 79
Missouri 69, Kentucky 60
St John?s 81, Duke 77

This was the first time since March 6, 2005 that these three teams all lost on the same day.

12) Washington 78, Arizona 75? First-year coach Mike Hopkins has the Huskies 17-6 , 7-3 in the Pac-12; they?ve got wins over Kansas/Arizona, have shot at making the NCAAs. Would be ironic if Washington made the NCAAs and Syracuse didn?t, seeing how Hopkins waited a long time for Jim Boeheim to retire, so he could take over that program.

11) CAA race is interesting; Charleston leads at 9-3, game ahead of Northeastern/Wm & Mary. With one-third of the regular season left, nine of 10 teams already have four conference losses. Last place James Madison has three wins. 21 of 60 CAA games were decided by 4 or less points or in overtime.

10) Central Michigan 101, Ohio U 98 2OT? Bobcats went 16-31 on foul line, blew 13-point lead with 12:21 left to play. Chippewas were 31-36 on the charity stripe.

9) Colorado State asked basketball coach Larry Eustachy to step away from his job for a while, as they investigate the program? apparently he curses at players in practice and in 2014, was given a zero tolerance policy towards future verbal abuse of players.

Eustachy?s base salary is $985,012 and if he gets fired for cause, it saves the school $3M. When the team is 10-15, 3-9 in the Mountain West like Colorado State is this year, people put up with a lot less shenanigans than they did when the team was winning.

8) UCLA 82, USC 79? This was a really good game; 70 fast-paced possessions, Bruins had to make 12-26 on the arc to pull out the home win. Bennie Boatwright played only 9:00 for USC- -his foot still isn?t 100%.

7) Upsets of the Day:
Oklahoma State (+13) 84, Kansas 79
Brown (+11.5) 102, Princeton 100 OT
Citadel (+11.5) 100, Furman 92 OT
St John?s (+11) 81, Duke 77
SIU-Edwardsville 75, Jacksonville State 67
Drexel (+9) 91, William & Mary 79
East Carolina (+8) 88, Memphis 85 OT
Drake (+8) 78, Bradley 68

6) Ivy League teams play Friday/Saturday once conference play starts; Brown lost 95-90 in OT at Penn Friday night, then won 102-100 in OT at Princeton Saturday? had to be some tired kids on the bus back to Providence late Saturday night.

5) Gonzaga 68, BYU 60? Zags beat BYU at home for first time in four years. Gonzaga in 11-1 in WCC, but is 0-7 vs spread in last seven games, another example of how gambling is difficult.

4) Home favorites went 6-1 vs spread in SEC games Saturday; only team that didn?t cover was Auburn, which won by 12 laying 12.5. Tigers have a two-game lead over Tennessee in the SEC. Kentucky-Florida-Alabama are tied for third. Is Bruce Pearl national Coach of the Year?

3) Middle Tennessee State leads Conference USA at 10-1; they?ve won six of seven road games in conference, but none of the six wins were by more than seven points.

2) Cal-Davis 105, Long Beach State 104, 2OT? Aggies won despite suspending their best player, senior F Chima Moneke because to an unspecified violation of team rules at a hotel. No one was talking after the game, but the suspension is said to be indefinite.

Long Beach?s Gabe Levin was 24-28 on foul line in this game. Lot of foul shots for one guy.

1) Northern Colorado 86, Montana State 63? Bears? Andre Spight scored 41 points; he was 8-21 on arc, 7-10 inside arc, with five assists, seven turnovers. He had the ball a lot. This was his 4th Big Sky game with 30+ points this season.

Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

Odds to win the 2018 World Series

5-1? Bronx Bombers

11-2? Houston Astros

6-1? Los Angeles Dodgers

15-2? Cleveland Indians

9-1? Chicago Cubs

10-1? Boston Red Sox, Washington Nationals

**********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a super Sunday

13) Eagles 41, Patriots 33? Before this season, Nick Foles was 20-16 as an NFL starting QB; he has never started more than 11 games in a season. Now he is a Philadelphia legend.

Foles was 28-43 for 373 yards and three TD?s, ending an improbable story where he took over for an injured Carson Wentz and led the Eagles to their first Super Bowl title and 4th NFL title, their first one since 1960.

I completely whiffed on this game; didn?t think a backup QB could hang 41 in a Super Bowl, so the next question is, does Foles go back to being a backup next year, or do the Eagles trade him, and if so, where do they trade him?

12) This game broke the Super Bowl record for most total yards before the third quarter was over.

11) So the Eagles score their first TD to make score 9-3; before they can try the PAT (which they missed), my DirecTV goes out, so I have to go downstairs, retrieve a stepladder and go out to sweep the inch or so of snow off the satellite dish. No bueno.

Also had my 2017 tax return done by halftime, making it the most productive 90 minutes of my 2018, by far. Muy bueno.

10) What does ESPN show during the Super Bowl?
ESPN2? World Series of Poker
ESPNU? College gymnastics
ESPN? 30 for 30 on wrestler Ric Flair

9) New England?s field goal on their first drive were first 1st-quarter points they?ve scored in the eight Super Bowls Brady has played in.

This was first Super Bowl where both starting QB?s threw for 100+ yards each in first quarter.

8) Over/under on numbers of players to throw a pass was 2.5, with the over +$180. Four guys threw passes in the first half.

7) Home underdogs in college basketball were 0-6 vs spread Sunday; that doesn?t happen much.

6) Gary Woodland shot a 64 Sunday and won the Phoenix Open. Best shot of the day was on the 16th hole, when Matt Kuchar damn near aced the popular par-3.

5) How many football coaches around the country will put that trick play in that the Eagles used to score their second TD? That will be a popular 2-point play in high school games next fall.

When Eagles? TE Trey Burton went to college at Florida, he thought he would be Tim Tebow?s replacement at QB, but that never worked out. Funny how eight years later he throws a TD pass in a Super Bowl.

4) First half total yardage was 350-323, Patriots; both teams averaged over nine yards per play.

How would you like to be a Lions? fan and see that stat? One DC (Jim Schwartz) used to be the Lions? coach; the other (Matt Patricia) is the Lions? next head coach.

3) There had never been a sack-less Super Bowl; Graham?s sack/fumble with 2:10 left was the first sack of the game. Pretty good time for it.

2) Friend of mine had two squares in a $1,000 per square pool; I?m guessing the guy who had 2-2 was cursing the fates??.until halftime, when the score was 22-12. Cha-ching!!!

1- I?m guessing this Super Bowl got tremendous TV ratings; it was a terrific, fun game, with a dramatic finish. Next year?s Super Bowl is in Atlanta?s new stadium. Who will be in it?

Game of the Night: Blazers at Pistons ? 7:05 PM EST

Portland (29-24 SU, 25-23-5 ATS) wraps up a rough three-game road trip after falling at Toronto and Boston. The Raptors blew out the Blazers on Friday, 130-105, as Portland trailed by 19 points after one quarter. Terry Stotts? club built a 16-point halftime lead over the under-manned Celtics on Sunday, but Portland dropped a heart-breaker at the buzzer on Al Horford?s jumper, 97-96. Portland slipped to 2-6 in its last eight games away from the Moda Center, with four of those losses to strong playoff contenders (Toronto, Boston, Minnesota, and Houston).

The Pistons (25-26 SU, 25-24-2 ATS) are hitting their stride following the acquisition of Blake Griffin from the Clippers last week. Detroit upset Cleveland in the first game after the trade, then Griffin recorded a 24-point, 10-rebound effort in his Pistons? debut, a 104-102 victory over the Grizzlies last Thursday. The Pistons held off the Heat on Saturday, 111-107, but failed to cash as 4 ?-point favorites to fall to 0-2 ATS with Griffin in the lineup.

Detroit is currently on a 5-0 OVER run, while each of the past five meetings with Portland eclipsed the OVER. Last season, these two teams needed overtime in each of the two matchups as the Pistons captured both games. Detroit edged Portland at the Moda Center, 125-124 as 3 ?-point underdogs, while the Pistons held off the Blazers at the Palace of Auburn Hills, 120-113 to pick up their fourth straight win in the series.

Not Hitting the Wall

Losing an All-Star player would normally set a team back, but that?s not the case in Washington. The Wizards (30-22 SU, 24-28 ATS) are riding a four-game winning streak since John Wall was sidelined with a left knee injury. Washington didn?t suffer a letdown on Saturday following consecutive home underdog wins over Oklahoma City and Toronto, as the Wizards chased the Magic, 115-98 as 4 ?-point favorites.

The Pacers (30-24 SU, 29-25 ATS) have pulled off six consecutive victories at Bankers Life Fieldhouse following Saturday?s 100-92 triumph over the 76ers. Each of the last five home wins have come against teams at .500 or below, as Indiana looks for better results against Washington after dropping three of four matchups last season.

New Orleans vs. Old Orleans

The Jazz didn?t make the playoffs in their first five seasons in New Orleans before shipping out to Salt Lake City in 1979. Utah (24-28 SU, 28-24 ATS) eventually put together a 20-year run of playoff appearances before failing to make the postseason in 2004. Quin Snyder?s team is coming off a division title last season, but the Jazz have fallen on hard times by sitting in last place of the Northwest.

However, the Jazz are starting to climb back to life after winning their fifth straight game on Saturday, 120-111 at San Antonio as six-point underdogs. Besides beating the Spurs, Utah also knocked off Toronto and Golden State in this stretch, while topping the 120-point mark in three consecutive contests.

Utah heads to New Orleans to face a Pelicans? (28-24 SU, 26-25-1 ATS) squad that has lost three of four games since DeMarcus Cousins tore his Achilles? tendon on January 26 against Houston. The latest defeat came at Minnesota on Saturday, 118-107, the fourth loss to the Wolves this season, in spite of Anthony Davis pouring in 38 points for New Orleans. The Jazz and Pelicans have split two meetings this season in Salt Lake City, while Utah has won three of the past four visits to Smoothie King Center since 2015.

Buzzing Around

For the third time this season, the Hornets (23-29 SU, 23-25-4 ATS) have put together a three-game winning streak. Charlotte torched Atlanta (123 points) and Indiana (133 points) prior to rallying past Phoenix on Sunday, 115-110. Although the Hornets failed to cover as 6 ?-point road favorites, the Hornets used a 20-2 run to start the fourth quarter and overcame 41% shooting from the floor to pick up their eighth away victory of the season.

Charlotte continues its four-game road swing against Western Conference foes as the Hornets head to Denver. The Nuggets (28-25 SU, 24-26-3 ATS) have experienced quite a week against three of the league?s top teams at home. Denver lost in the final seconds to Boston on Monday, but bounced back with a game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer to knock off Oklahoma City on Thursday. The Nuggets rallied past the defending champion Warriors on Saturday, 115-108 as five-point underdogs, improving to 3-1 SU/ATS as a home ?dog.

Earlier this season, the Hornets ripped the Nuggets, 110-93 as two-point home ?dogs in late October, the third consecutive win by Charlotte over Denver since March 2017. Each of the past six meetings at Pepsi Center have finished UNDER the total, while the Hornets are 3-1 SU/ATS in their previous four trips to Denver.

Sunshine State Showdown

Following a victory at Dallas to begin its four-game road trip, the Heat (29-24 SU, 25-25-3 ATS) cooled off the final three contests by losing at Cleveland, Philadelphia, and Detroit. All three defeats were decided by six points or less, capped off by Saturday?s 111-107 setback to the Pistons, but the Heat barely cashed as 4 ?-point ?dogs. That high-scoring affair snapped a six-game UNDER streak, as well as ending a six-game stretch of scoring fewer than 100 points.

Miami returns home to battle Orlando (15-36 SU, 22-28-1 ATS), who had its eight-game covering streak as an underdog snapped in Saturday?s 115-98 home loss to Washington as 4 ?-point ?dogs. Five ATS wins during that stretch came as a double-digit ?dog, while the Magic have cashed in six straight games on the highway. Orlando topped Miami in the season opener at home, but the Heat have captured the last two matchups, including a six-point victory at Amway Center in late December.

Late Night Action

A pair of last-place squads meet up in Sacramento as the Kings entertain the Bulls. Chicago has dropped six consecutive games, including a pair of double-digit defeats to the Clippers and Blazers on its three-game road swing. The Kings fell apart in the fourth quarter of Saturday?s 106-99 defeat to the Mavericks to fall to 1-8 SU/ATS in their last nine games at Golden 1 Center. The Bulls had claimed five straight matchups with the Kings prior to Sacramento?s 106-105 close-shave win at the United Center in December.

The Mavericks have won only four of 15 games in 2018, but one of those victories came on Saturday at Sacramento. Dallas snapped a six-game stretch of scoring less than 100 points by putting up 106, while ending a six-game UNDER streak. The Mavs head to Staples Center to face the Clippers, who have won three of the past four contests, including a 10-point triumph over the Bulls on Saturday afternoon. Dallas and L.A. have split a pair of meetings this season as both teams have exchanged blowout wins on their home court.

Griffin Triggers Trade Market

Yup, that just happened. Blake Griffin is a member of the Detroit Pistons, the NBA trade market is officially life and?nothing else seems to be happening. The thing about a trade like this is that it has tremendous ripple effects. The Clippers are abandoning playoff hopes this year, but the Pistons are making an adorable push. How does this trade impact the current makeup of the NBA, and is there more to come?

BLAKE GRIFFIN TO THE DETROIT PISTONS

Maybe Blake Griffin going to a place called ?Motor City? was fate ever since he dunked over a car.

Man?this was a lot to take in. So much so that I needed an extra day to process it and see what else might?ve happened. In the end, I don?t know how much it actually moves the needle no matter how seismic it felt on Monday night. Griffin is a supreme talent, but he?s also a player that relies on his explosiveness and burst to do damage. I love watching him play but his success relies on that of those around him.

Still, I can?t help but be magnetized by the new Detroit Pistons for a minute. It?s sort of like when Boogie got traded last year to a non-contender from another non-contender. There was buzz talking about Davis-Boogie going after that 8th seed in the west and maybe giving the Warriors some run in the first round. Boogie is the best center in the league when healthy, and Davis is undeniably one of the top-five guys in the NBA.

I don?t know where Griffin falls in that discussion to be honest. Top-20? Top-15 maybe? He can take over games. He has presence. He passes all of the eye tests in spades (when he?s on the court). Griffin boasts a player impact estimate of 15.0 flat, and this sandwiches him in with players on the level of Oladipo, Butler and Aldridge.

Maybe a move to Detroit revitalizes him. It?s not a straight fit with Drummond, although I love that both can move the ball offensively. Like New Orleans last season, the team will have to rely on their new, bullish pair of front courters because the rest of the team is a barren wasteland. There?s no point in getting in to it ? nobody is taking the Pistons at +4000 to steal the Eastern Conference.

Beyond that all of the versatility that Detroit had in terms of cap space and roster adjustments has now evaporated. Tobias Harris is fine but sort of been ?meh? for his entire career. Avery Bradley is criminally underrated, underappreciated and underpaid but that will get sorted when he signs with the Spurs this summer (I?m kidding but it seems like a great fit). The pair of them shored up a lot of Detroit?s flaws, which include Reggie Jackson?s health issues.

Boban is an Instagram sensation and the 2018 first rounder that the Clippers acquired is going to land somewhere around the mid-teens. Overall it?s a sensational haul for the Clippers, who have essentially thrown in the towel on the year with intentions of taking Jerry West in to the summer with boat loads of cash.

Griffin signed a $173 million deal for 5 years, and a lot of people have talked about how the value of that contract gets worse over time because of his age and supposed peak. I agree with all of it. You can?t be paying Drummond and Griffin in to their mid-thirties the sums that they?re going to be making. That?s life in Detroit where nobody of significance signs.

And that?s really what this trade was about. The Clippers found a perfect trade target for an albatross of a contract they no longer wanted, and Detroit has been screaming for a superstar for years. This is the same team that paid Reggie Jackson $80 million over five and will unload the Brinks truck for Andre Drummond. Markets like Detroit have to overpay or draft supremely well.

Shedding the books for the Clippers is a great idea in theory, but NBA free agents are deservedly self-entitled and are always negotiating with a stronger position than the teams. Unless West is tossing around those crippling no-trade exemptions in contracts to superstars this summer, there?s going to be a lot of animosity for the way he treated Griffin. I don?t know if that was worth it.

One of the big things for Detroit is that they can use Griffin to attract other players, and that?s where I believe the Clippers failed here. No matter what people think of him, he?s the type of guy that other players enjoy running with. He?s unselfish, makes you look great, he?s funny and a force of nature when beckoned on. Now that the Clippers have screwed him over by banishing him to the barrens of Motor City, it makes their franchise look a lot less attractive to free agents.

But what do I know? It just takes one player to say ?thanks for that $150 million contract? and then I look like an idiot for saying anything intangible about the league.

As I?ve said before, I have problems with the regular season and the playoffs. We?re staring at a post-season that will be likely dominated by the Boston Celtics, Toronto Raptors and Cleveland Cavaliers on one side with the Warriors and Rockets in the west. But trades like this can make the second half of the regular season much more fun. The Clippers are too different of a team to bet on now, but eyes are on Detroit. This could be really fun times for the Pistons in the immediate future.

WASHINGTON IS IN DANGER

You sort of have to look at the Griffin trade as a two-season gamble for Detroit. They don?t have a lot of time to make things work before Griffin starts regressing. And really, you just have to look at the state of the Eastern Conference to say, ?Hmmm?they might make it!? even if it takes a little bit of heavy handed optimism to get there.

The top-five in the Eastern Conference are locked in. Boston is taking their lumps right now but will be fine in the long run. Toronto looks like the real sleeper all of a sudden. Cleveland still has LeBron so nothing else really matters. Miami is solid, but not great. Milwaukee has the probably MVP and Jabari Parker coming back this week. None of those teams are moving.

The Pacers and Sixers sit in seventh and eighth right now and I don?t know how sustainable either entity is. Indiana is relying on a lot of factors that haven?t ever panned out together. Philly just needs to stay healthy. Basically there are two spots open to three teams. Indiana has to hang in there and Detroit has to use the momentum of the Griffin acquisition, along with another trade, to break through.

That leaves the Washington Wizards as the team in the most perilous position. They?ve been terrible all season and now John Wall is out for up to two freaking months with a knee injury. This is bad news for a team that simply doesn?t have anyone else on the roster to push them over the edge. Wall could be out for basically the rest of the regular season and the seams are already starting to fray for the Wizards in a bad way.

On paper they are a good team, but anyone that watches the games has to wonder how they can be competitive unless Beal is scoring 30 points a game. To put things in perspective, the oddsmakers have the Wizards at +2500 to win the east. Philly is +2000.

Simply put there is just a lack of depth when it comes to Washington. Otto Porter is a great role player, but by no means a cornerstone despite being paid like one. Markieff Morris and Marcin Gortat have fallen off a cliff this season. Beal continues to ascend as the deadliest shooter in the game, but he can only do so much. They?re just vulnerable all over the place.

Why else do you think they?re 2-8 ATS in their last 10 games? Washington was already one of the worst bets in the league. Unless Beal puts in an MVP-caliber run over the next two months with the show all to himself, the Wizards could be lottery bound.

If that gives Detroit the opening it needs to sneak in to the playoffs, they?ll be get a ton of reprieve (and playoff revenue) to further justify the trade. As for Washington, they?re now swallowing a jagged pill after having committed over $300 million to John Wall for the entirety of his career. And for what? Yikes.

ANTHONY DAVIS ISN?T GOING ANYWHERE

Speaking of Boogie Cousins, let?s pour one out for his 2017-18 season. There?s never a good time for a ruptured Achilles, but the Pelicans were competing hard with Houston in a statement game. The loss of Boogie has triggered mass rumors about a supposed fire sale in New Orleans.

That?s not happening.

Davis has been forever linked to the Boston Celtics simply because Danny Ainge wants him. So what? The Celtics have tons of assets and draft picks to trade away, but the fact is that Davis is a generational talent that is still really freaking young. New Orleans knows the hard truth ? they will never get an ideal return for him, and lose whatever equity he represents on the free agent market in turn.

For whatever it?s worth Nikola Mirotic continues to be linked to the Pelicans in trade rumors.

CLEVELAND IS STILL SCREWED

I wrote about this last week, but the ripple effect of the Griffin trade is bad news for Cleveland. The Cavaliers have been pining for DeAndre Jordan, a trade rumor I scoffed at because Tristan Thompson is not worth trading for. He makes too much money and doesn?t produce enough to justify it.

News about the Clippers holding on to Jordan as an anchor for the team was leaked this week, probably as a measure to improve his trade value. If the Cavaliers are willing to ship that lottery pick from the Nets over to the Clippers, they have a done deal. I don?t understand what the point of hanging on to that pick is. DeAndre is by far the best player available on the realistic trade market now. If the Clippers are going to absorb Thompson?s contract, and deal with J.R. Smith, they have to top off the offer with a sweetener.

And as I?ve said, that Brooklyn pick is getting worse by the minute. The Nets are the sixth worst team in the league by record, but they have a real chance of vaulting the Bulls, Grizzlies, Lakers and Hornets to make that pick go from being top-5 to top-10. That?s a world of difference in a top heavy draft that really only has three sure-things.

However, with cap relief in sight and Jordan having a banner year, the Clippers don?t need to move on from him. The rebuild process for Los Angeles isn?t going to be a bottoming out process. They just want to re-jigger with some new toys.

CHARLOTTE HORNETS GET CRICKETS FOR FIRE SALE ATTEMPT

Last but certainly not least are the Charlotte Hornets, who had the funniest reaction in the world to putting every single asset they have on the trading block. Kemba Walker is a great piece to add, but nobody seems to want him. Dwight Howard anybody?! Anybody???

The trade market for Kemba has been dead silent. The Pacers and Knicks both kicked the tires on a trade, as did the Timberwolves, but nothing really got very far. Still, GRIFFIN JUST GOT TRADED TO THE PISTONS so anything can happen.

I sure hope so. The NBA is at its best when teams are willing to do crazy things.

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Can baseball thoughts make you warmer?

It was 75 degrees when I got off the plane in Las Vegas Monday; problem is, I had been on that plane for 11 hours? more on that tomorrow.

Spring training starts next week; here are some baseball notes to keep you warm.

13) Houston Astros led MLB with a .478 slugging percentage LY and struck out only 1,087 times; they?re only second team since 1948 (?95 Indians) to lead league in SP while striking out the least amount of times in the league.

12) Atlanta Braves used nine 3rd basemen LY; with Chipper Jones getting in Hall of Fame this summer, it has been five years since he left Atlanta and they still haven?t found a replacement.

11) Chicago Cubs are 27-15 in their last 42 games against their rivals from St Louis.

10) Cubs had 100 quality starts in 2016, when they won the World Series; that number slipped to 77 last year, which put a big strain on their bullpen.

9) Speaking of which, Toronto?s bullpen threw 596.2 innings LY- thats 11 outs a game, which is just too much. If your starting pitchers can?t finish the 6th inning consistently, you?re in trouble.

8) Seattle Mariners made 219 player transactions last season; they used 61 different players, 15 of whom weren?t in Seattle?s organization when the season started.

7) Red Sox hit 168 homers last year, least in the American League.

6) Texas Rangers had three guys LY who hit 25+ homers while batting less than .210; they?re first team ever to do that.

5) Baltimore?s starting pitchers had a 5.70 ERA last year, which helps explain why they won 14 fewer games than in 2016.

4) Cincinnati Reds used 10 different ROOKIE starting pitchers LY; playing in their small home ballpark, thats just too many.

3) Angels? first basemen hit a combined .231 LY; their second basemen hit .206, which is why they got Ian Kinsler. Albert Pujols is going to have to play a decent amount of 1B this year if Shotei Ohtani, is going to DH.

2) Detroit Tigers owe Miguel Cabrera $184M over the next six years; Cabrera is going to be 35 in April, so it is doubtful they?ll be able to get out from under that back-loaded contract.

1) Oakland A?s allowed 82 unearned runs LY, most in baseball; they made 121 errors, which is unacceptable. Maybe they shouldn?t have let infield coach Ron Washington bolt to Atlanta.
