Saturday?s List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here??

13) First time the Eagles played in the Super Bowl, 36 years ago, the tickets cost $40. Now you can add a couple zeroes to the end of that.

12) Lot of big-time money-line bets on the Eagles this week; as of 4pm Friday. CG Technology said it had a 7-figure liability on the Eagles? money line. Interesting.

Just can?t envision someone taking $700,000 and betting on New England to lose SU, but that is what makes gambling so fascinating? you and I look at the same things in different ways.

11) NCAA is investigating UConn?s basketball program, so speculation can begin on who will take Kevin Ollie?s job. Huskies are struggling badly, so Ollie will get told to take a hike pretty soon, if there is anything at all to the NCAA?s probe.

If he was winning, they?d take a deep breath and stay the course.

There is no real logical successor at UConn; Steve Pikiell? Jim Calhoun worked wonders in the Nutmeg State? it wasn?t a very good job before he took it.

10) College football coaches are nomads: Dan Enos was the offensive coordinator at Arkansas the last three years, but the Razorbacks changed coaches, so Enos signed on with Michigan Jan 8th, but this week, Enos quit and will now be the quarterbacks? coach at Alabama.

Seeing how Alabama?s football program turned a $45M profit LY, they can pay their coaches really, really well and with a freshman and sophomore QB battling for playing time next fall, Nick Saban needs a QB coach who can develop at least one of them? chances are one will also transfer, eventually.

9) When Dick Vermeil took the Eagles? head coaching job in 1976, he took a family vote on whether to move from UCLA to the Eagles? he was the only person to vote yes. That must have been a fun first couple of years, when the kids were cold as hell in winter and the team sucked.

Everything turned out well; the Eagles wound up in the Super Bowl, then coach Vermeil retired and went into TV work? he stayed in TV for 14 years before coaching the Rams, by which time his kids were all grown up.

8) TNT announcers were killing the Washington Wizards during their first half of their game in Oklahoma City Thursday night; phrases like ?Going through the motions? and ?Maybe they should have another team meeting? were heard more than once. All this and the Wizards are tied for 5th seed in the East.

All this drama surrounding NBA teams lately, and most of it involving good teams; what the hell must the bad teams be like? They must really hate playing with each other.

7) Billy Donovan has gone from being one of the best college basketball coaches in the country to coaching the Oklahoma City Thunder, one of the NBA?s better teams. I?d love to know if he enjoys it, or if he would ever go back to coaching in college? I?m just curious, thats all.

6) If someone doesn?t name a racehorse ?Secret Society? this summer, I?m going to be very disappointed. Catchy name.

5) Stormy Daniels will be on the Jimmy Kimmel Show Tuesday night, after the State of the Union address. Asking for a friend: when was the last time a porn star/escort was a guest on a network TV talk show? Again, I?m just curious.

4) Former NFL QB Tarvaris Jackson signed up to be a graduate assistant football coach at Alabama State? he hopes to coach in the NFL someday. He played 10 years in the NFL.

3) The Earth doesn?t take 24 hours to rotate the sun; it takes 23 hours, 56 minutes, 4 seconds.

2) Pelicans beat Houston last night, but DeMarcus Cousins limped off with an achilles injury late in the game and it didn?t look good. New Orleans has been on a roll lately, was moving up the ladder in the Western Conference, but if this is a serious injury, then sayonara to that.

1) Miami Marlins? GM Michael Hill is going to try to run seven marathons on seven continents in seven days starting next week, which takes him off the grid. No wonder the Marlins always suck; when baseball isn?t your GM?s priority just before spring training starts, what do you expect?

But hey, the guy went to Harvard, so who cares if he is running a marathon in Antartica when someone wants to call about a potential trade for JT Realmuto?

Saturday's Tip Sheet
January 26, 2018

Game of the Night: Celtics at Warriors ? 8:30 PM EST

A potential NBA Finals preview takes place at Oracle Arena as the two teams that are currently the top seeds in their respective conferences hook up. Boston (35-14 SU, 28-19-2 ATS) continues a four-game road trip following a split at Staples Center in Los Angeles earlier this week. The Lakers knocked off the Celtics, 108-107 on Tuesday to send Boston to its fourth straight loss, but the C's bounced back the next night by downing the Clippers, 113-102 as 3 ?-point underdogs.

The Celtics led pretty much wire-to-wire against the Clippers, as Boston shot 14-of-40 from three-point range. Eight different Celtics drilled a trey, while guard Kyrie Irving led Boston with 20 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists. Al Horford and Marcus Smart each sat out for the Celtics, but Horford is expected to return to the lineup on Saturday.

The Warriors (39-10 SU, 22-26-1 ATS) look to become the first team to 40 victories following Thursday?s 126-113 triumph over the Timberwolves to barely cash as 12 ?-point favorites. Golden State ended a three-game ATS slide as Steve Kerr's club converted 21-of-37 three-point attempts, including 18 treys from the All-Star trio of Kevin Durant, Stephen Curry, and Klay Thompson. Durant posted a triple-double (28 points, 10 rebounds, 11 assists), while the Warriors improved to 9-1 this season at home when scoring at least 120 points.

In their previous meeting at TD Garden on November 16, the Warriors built a 17-point lead, but the Celtics rallied to upend the defending champions, 92-88 as seven-point underdogs. The victory extended Boston?s winning streak to 14 (which eventually reached 16), even though Brad Stevens? squad shot 33% from the floor and Irving knocked down 4-of-16 field goal attempts. The Warriors weren?t much better, hitting 40% of their tries, as Curry put up a season-low nine points on 3-of-14 shooting.

Boston is one of the few teams that has seen success at Oracle Arena as the Celtics have covered in four straight visits, while winning the last two road matchups outright. Two seasons ago, Boston ended Golden State?s 54-game regular season home winning streak, 109-106 as 11 ?-point underdogs. Last season, the Celtics pulled away from the Warriors in the fourth quarter, 99-86 as 7 ?-point ?dogs, but Durant missed that contest due to a knee injury.

Don?t Reach Three

For as inconsistent and unreliable the Wizards (26-22 SU, 20-28 ATS) have been at times this season, there is one thing you cannot take away from them. Washington has yet to lose three consecutive games, as the Wizards have dropped back-to-back games seven times, only to snap that mini skid each time. The Wizards slipped to 1-9 ATS in the past 10 games following Thursday?s 121-112 setback at Oklahoma City, while owning an 0-6 ATS mark in the previous six opportunities as a road favorite.

One of those six defeats came at Atlanta (14-34 SU, 25-21-2 ATS) in late December, 113-99 as the Hawks managed a cover as six-point home ?dogs. The Hawks return home following a 121-110 defeat at Charlotte on Friday, as Atlanta owns a 6-1 ATS mark in its past seven in the underdog role at Philips Arena. Mike Budenholzer?s team has won only twice in 10 opportunities with no rest, but has compiled a 7-2-1 ATS on the second end of back-to-backs this season.

Miami Thrice?

It shouldn?t be a surprise that the Heat (27-21 SU, 22-24-2 ATS) lost at Houston on Monday as 11-point ?dogs, 99-90. But Miami was shocked on Thursday as 9 ?-point favorites by Sacramento, 89-88, as the Kings ended a 15-game skid at the American Airlines Arena. Now, the Heat will try to avoid its first three-game losing streak since late October with a visit from the Hornets. Miami is seeking the four-game season sweep of its Southeast counterparts, as the Heat edged the Hornets in their previous matchup last Saturday, 106-105 as seven-point ?dogs.

Charlotte (20-27 SU, 20-24-3 ATS) pulled away from Atlanta on Friday, 121-110 to grab the cover as seven-point home favorites. The Hornets finished off an uneven homestand at 3-2, while owning a 2-10 record in its last 12 games off a victory since late November. Steve Clifford?s club has played eight of the past nine games at home, as the Hornets have put together an impressive 4-1 SU/ATS record the previous five road contests, including a victory at Golden State.

Texas Troubles

The Mavericks (16-33 SU, 24-24-1 ATS) were pointspread darlings in late December by covering five straight games. However, Dallas is mired in a 2-4 ATS slump following Friday?s 107-93 home defeat to Portland, the second loss to the Blazers in a week. The Mavs head back on the road to face Denver as Dallas has compiled a 10-2-1 ATS mark in its past 13 games in the role of an away underdog. One of those ATS victories came at Pepsi Center on January 16 as Dallas picked up the backdoor cover as six-point ?dogs by outscoring Denver in the fourth quarter, 33-19 in a 105-102 setback.

The Nuggets (25-23 SU, 21-24-3 ATS) continue to be the face of inconsistency as they followed up a two-game skid by picking up consecutive home victories over the Blazers and Knicks. Denver snapped a five-game winless ATS run in Thursday?s 130-118 blowout of New York as seven-point favorites, as the Nuggets scorched the Knicks by shooting 60% from the floor. The hot shooting night by the Nuggets also ended a seven-game UNDER stretch, as three of the past four home meetings with the Mavericks have finished UNDER the total.

Sunday?s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday

13) NC State 95, North Carolina 91 OT? Wolfpack was 15-30 on the arc; Tar Heels were 4-19, and 11-20 on line. Kevin Keatts is 2-0 vs Duke/UNC in his first year with the Wolfpack.

12) Virginia 65, Duke 63? Blue Devils scored 22 points in first half, 41 in second, but it wasn?t enough. Cavaliers are the best team in the ACC.

Today was the first time since 1973 Duke/North Carolina both lost at home on the same day.

11) Kentucky 83, West Virginia 76? Wildcats were down 17 points, rallied for road win. West Virginia has now lost four of its last five games.

10) Ball State 111, Akron 106, 2OT? Akron?s Jimond Ivey scored 48 points, made 9-12 on the arc, including a 35-footer that forced a second OT, but his teammates were 6-32 on the arc for the game. Ball State was 33-42 on the line, 10-18 on the arc, and still needed two OT?s to win.

9) Auburn 95, LSU 70? Auburn is 19-2 and two of their best players never became eligible this season- they were winning this game by 19 at the half- they made 14-32 on the arc.

8) UNLV 88, San Diego State 78? Rebels snap an 11-game losing streak to the Aztecs; only four of those 11 losses were in San Diego.

7) Upsets of the Day:
Citadel (+17) 76, Mercer 74
NC State (+13) 95, North Carolina 91 OT
Sacramento State (+12.5) 71, Portland State 61
Tex-San Antonio (+12.5) 82, UAB 70

Elon (+9) 76, Towson State 67
VMI (+8.5) 70, Chattanooga 69
Kentucky (+8) 83, West Virginia 76
Niagara (+8) 105, Canisius 89

6) Mentioned earlier that 1973 was last time Duke/North Carolina both lost at home on same day; when was last time VMI/Citadel both won on the road on the same day?

5) Butler 70, St John?s 45? Johnnies are 0-10 in the Big East; I?m advising St John?s to hire Bruce Pearl as its coach, and ESPN to hire Mullin? he was very good on TV.

4) Clippers? Lou Williams had 40 points, 10 assists Friday; he is first NBA player with a game of 40+ points, 10+ assists since Brian Winters of the Bucks in January 1982.

3) Wyoming 90, San Jose State 86 OT? Cowboys upset Nevada in double OT Wednesday, then went on road here and avoided an upset in overtime. Justin James scored 64 points in those two games, playing 77:00.

2) Next November?s Maui Classic is loaded: Gonzaga, Arizona, Duke, Xavier, San Diego State, Iowa State, Illinois, Auburn. Chaminade will only be in every other Maui Classic from here on in.

NBA Game of the Day: 76ers at Thunder betting preview and odds
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Philadelphia 76ers at Oklahoma City Thunder (-3.5, 215.5)

The hottest teams in their respective conferences square off Sunday when the Philadelphia 76ers continue a four-game road trip at the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Sixers are coming off perhaps their best win of the season, a 97-78 triumph at San Antonio, which had lost just three of its first 23 home games before Philadelphia came in and dominated.

"We played really well defensively," center Joel Embiid told reporters. "We were physical, we got the stops we needed and on offense we took care of the ball." The Thunder have won 17 straight meetings with the Sixers dating back to Nov. 15, 2008, and including a triple-overtime thriller at Philadelphia earlier this season when Embiid and Oklahoma City superstar Russell Westbrook engaged in some notable trash talk. Westbrook recorded his 94th career triple-double with 31 points, 13 assists and 11 rebounds in Saturday's 121-108 win at Detroit. The Thunder's seven-game winning streak, during which they've averaged 115.6 points, is the longest active run in the league.

TV:
6 p.m. ET, ESPN, FS Oklahoma

LINE HISTORY:
Oddsmakers opened the Thunder as high as 4.5-point home chalk and that appears to be too high for bettors as money came in on the 76ers dragging that line down to -3.5 at most books. The total hit the board at 213.5 and has been bet up to 215.5.

INJURY REPORT:

76ers - PG Jerryd Bayless (Out Sunday, Wrist), SG Furkan Korkmaz (Mid February, Foot), SG JJ Redick (Early February, Leg), PG Markelle Fultz (Out Indefinitely, Shoulder).

Thunder - SG Andre Roberson (Out Indefinitely, Knee)

POWER RANKINGS:
76ers (-4.7) - Thunder (-6.6) + home court (-3) = Thunder -4.9

MATCHUP CHART:

2vt6zwx.jpg

ABOUT THE 76ERS (24-21 SU, 26-18-1 ATS, 24-21 O/U):
Rookie star Ben Simmons had a tiny dip in production in the middle of the month but has broken out in a big way during the team's current two-game winning streak. He first posted a triple-double of 19 points, 17 rebounds and 14 assists against Chicago before piling up 21 points on 10-of-11 shooting in the rout of the Spurs, and the 21-year-old is confident that his team has moved beyond its difficult past. "That's the old Sixers. The old Sixers [didn't win here]," he told reporters in San Antonio. "We got to come in with a new mentality and leave the past behind, and play the way we play. We come to win, and play hard, and that's the end result for us: we want to win."

ABOUT THE THUNDER (29-20 SU, 21-28 ATS, 22-27 O/U):
The win over Detroit had plenty of positives, namely Carmelo Anthony becoming the 21st player in NBA history to reach 25,000 career points, but the takeaway was a reported ruptured patellar tendon for guard Andre Roberson. "He's certainly a huge loss," coach Billy Donovan told reporters. "Everyone's been able to see that since he's kinda come back to us and what he's been able to do defensively. And he's found a way to be, offensively, a really effective player for us." Paul George, who was named as a replacement in the All-Star Game for the injured DeMarcus Cousins, chipped in 26 points Saturday and is averaging 27 over a four-game stretch.

TRENDS:

* 76ers are 8-1 ATS in their last 9 when their opponent allows 100 points or more in their previous game.

* Thunder are 1-7 ATS in their last 8 Sunday games.

* Under is 5-0 in 76ers last 5 road games vs. a team with a winning home record.

* Under is 8-2 in the last 10 meetings.

* Home team is 4-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings.

CONSENSUS:
Users are backing the home chalk Thunder in this matchup, with 66 percent of pointspread picks. When it comes to the total, 58 percent of wagers are on the Over.

Sunday's Essentials
January 28, 2018

Game of the Night - Philadelphia at Oklahoma City (-3.5, 214.5), ESPN, 6:05 ET

The Thunder (29-20 SU, 20-28-1 ATS) cruised past the slumping Pistons in Detroit on Saturday, christening the brand new downtown Little Caesar?s Arena with their presence for the first time by scoring 121 points, one off the most scored by an opposing team in the building. OKC won its season-best seventh straight game, the NBA?s longest current run of success. Russell Westbrook, Paul George and Carmelo Anthony combined to score 88. ?Melo reached 25,000 career points.

Despite all that, no one was in a mood to celebrate as they got out of town to head back home for Sunday?s date with the 76ers (24-21, 26-19). The course of Oklahoma City?s season had been altered.

Andre Roberson, the team?s standout defender and starting wing opposite George, ruptured his left patella tendon in the third quarter, slipping violently as he cut underneath the rim. His feet came out from under him, he landed on his backside and quickly flipped over and slid himself forward out of bounds about 10 feet. He was carried off on a stretcher and will be lost for the remainder of the season.

It?s an immense loss for the Thunder, which went 4-4 while he was sidelined with knee tendinitis. They?ve won five straight since his return, improving to 24-15 in games he plays. His impact on the rest of the team as a guy who doesn?t need the ball and effectively does all the dirty work on defense can?t be replaced by a single guy and may require GM Sam Presti bringing in another wing to aid the cause.

The 76ers arrive as one of just eight NBA teams entering Sunday with a winning road record, but have never won in Oklahoma City. In fact, they won the first game against the franchise after they became the Thunder upon moving from Seattle, but haven?t won since, carrying a series losing streak of 17 straight games into this one.

OKC has surrendered 114 or more points in four of the 10 games Roberson has missed. Opponents have managed to score that many in just seven of the 39 contests he?s worked in, so expect totals to increase. The ?over? is just 5-5 in games he?s missed, but the players remaining to help fill the void, 19-year-old rookie Terrance Ferguson and older vets Jerian Grant, Patrick Patterson, Josh Heustis and Alex Abrines, are nowhere near as reliable on the defensive end. Roberson made George and Anthony more effective.

The Thunder will move forward with a new starter opposite the Big Three and invaluable center Steven Adams, likely turning to Ferguson first since he filled in well while Roberson sat. We?ll immediately find out how well they?ll be able to move on since Philadelphia provides an immediate test on the second night of a back-to-back.

Joel Embiid has already confirmed he?s playing for the Sixers, who look to win a third straight game after embarrassing the Spurs on Friday night 97-78 to open a four-game road trip that continues in Milwaukee on Monday and culminates in Brooklyn on Jan. 31. Since Dec. 30, Philadelphia has won nine of 11, their finest stretch in that amount of games since the start of 2012, the last year it reached the playoffs.

Confidence is sky-high for the 76ers, who swept the Spurs for the first time since ?04 since they hadn?t won in San Antonio since that season. They held them to a season-low scoring output in the 97-78 rout. Philly won the first quarter 25-13 and imposed their will for a second straight game, basically leading wire-to-wire. Their victims during their current run include the Raptors, Celtics, Bucks and now the Spurs twice.

They?ve thrived despite shooting guard J.J. Redick missing time with a leg injury and backup point guards T.J. McConnell and Jeryd Bayless out. Bayless? wrist may keep him sidelined on Sunday, but McConnell has returned. No. 1 pick Markelle Fultz also is working to get back from a shoulder injury that has sabotaged his rookie season.

Oklahoma City won the first meeting on Dec. 15 in Philly, 119-117 in triple-overtime. The Thunder overcame Westbrook shooting 10-for-33 from the field and 5-for-12 from the free-throw line on a bizarre night where he did collect 17 boards and 15 assists in playing 52 minutes. Adams played 51 minutes and ?held? Embiid to 34 points, but OKC dominated with 18 offensive rebounds.

It remains to be seen if the Thunder have similar juice today as they play their third game in four nights while attempting to replace a crucial component. Sixers forwards Robert Covington and Dario Saric shot 5-for-24 from 3-point range in that loss but have been playing extremely well of late. Young wing Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot has averaged 16 points over the last three games and didn?t even get off the bench for any of the 63 minutes the teams played just over six weeks ago.

These teams are currently among the league?s best this month, so it should be fun to see a rematch of their triple-overtime duel, which wasn?t well-played but was nonetheless compelling.

LeBron looks to go streaking

The Cavs (28-19, 13-33-1) pulled out a 115-108 win at home over Indiana on Friday to snap a two-game losing streak and win for only the fourth time in 14 games dating back to Christmas Day. It was only the second time Cleveland covered a point spread since Dec. 19, a 2-15 run that started on Dec. 19.

A win over the Pistons (22-25, 24-21-2) would give LeBron James and Co. consecutive victories for the first time since beating the Jazz and Wizards on Dec. 16-17. If they cover the number (8), it would give the Cavs back-to-back ATS wins for the first time since Nov. 27-28. They last covered a spread this large back in Isaiah Thomas? debut on Jan. 2, beating Portland 127-110. That game represents the only double-digit win Cleveland has posted since Dec. 4.

Detroit has dropped seven straight, the league?s worst current run, but did get some hope from last night?s loss to the Thunder in that its bench outscored OKC 64-25, helping cut into a huge deficit while generating a few positives and keeping starters fresher for this one. Andre Drummond will try and make life difficult for the Cavs? new starting center, Tristan Thompson, while former teammates and good friends Isaiah Thomas and Avery Bradley will duel for the first time.

The Pistons haven?t won in Cleveland since the opening game of their first-round series back in ?16, dropping eight of 10 overall. The Cavs won this season?s only meeting 116-88 on Nov. 20.

Pelicans pick up the pieces

New Orleans was able to close out arguably its most impressive win of the season after watching DeMarcus Cousins get helped off the floor with 10 seconds left, but it then quickly found out that there was no miracle close call to be had. Boogie had indeed torn his Achilles attempting to chase down his missed free throw in a 115-113 Pels? win. He finished with a triple-double to help earn a season-best fourth straight win, but his injury puts a serious buzzkill on the entire season.

The Anthony Davis show is nothing new and the likeliest course of action since there isn?t much maneuver the front office can do, but that has only produced one playoff berth since he was drafted in 2012. Rajon Rondo started strong but can?t be counted on to physically bring it night after night until deep into March. Jrue Holiday and E?twuan Moore will have to carry even more of an offensive load and an a lack of frontcourt depth that was masked by having the most prolific big man combo in the game is about to be exposed.

February opens with five of seven on the road against some tough competition, so getting to the All-Star break without completely collapsing will be tough and likely requires home wins today against the Clippers and Tuesday against the lowly Kings.

L.A. has its star frontcourt combo back intact with Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan having returned to the lineup, so despite currently being on the outside looking in among the Western Conference?s top eight, it can certainly make up some ground with New Orleans now vulnerable. The Pels won the first meeting between these teams 111-103 as Cousins dominated with 35 points and 15 rebounds. He?s irreplaceable, but the books can buy the theory that they?ll rally the troops in the short-term, installing New Orleans as a one-point home favorite.

Injury report

The Suns are expected to have Devin Booker available against Houston after he left Friday night's loss to the Knicks with a hand injury. Centers Tyson Chandler (illness) and Alex Len (ankle) are hoping to play, while forward Marquese Chriss has returned from his hip ailment. The Rockets, despite losing for only the second time in nine games, are back intact with a full roster. Houston has won four consecutive home games.

Reigning Rookie of the Year Malcolm Brogdon is questionable for Milwaukee's visit to Chicago with calf soreness. He missed Friday night's win over Brooklyn, where Giannis Antetokounmpo returned to the lineup after knee soreness to play his first game following Jason Kidd's firing. Interim head coach Joe Prunty will look to move to 3-0 by winning his first home game against a Bulls team still missing Kris Dunn (concussion) after his nasty fall that cost him some teeth and produced whiplash. Guard Zach LaVine is still working his way back on a minutes restriction. He played a season-high 26 in Friday's loss to the Lakers, but shot just 3-for-17.

The Lakers will remain without Lonzo Ball for at least another game or two, so he'll be sidelined for Sunday's date with the Raptors.

Kawhi Leonard (quad) is also still sidelined in San Antonio, but the Spurs could get back Manu Ginobili back from a right thigh contusion as they look to snap Sacramento's modest two-game winning streak. Forward Rudy Gay (heel) is out.

Game of the Night - Boston at Denver (-1.5, 204.5), NBATV, 9:05 ET

This is normally the time of year where veteran teams look to take advantage of the younger ones by feasting on their lack of experience. The All-Star break is on the horizon, so it?s easy for guys who are still finding out why the season is so commonly referred to as a marathon to lose focus.

Boston opened the season with the sixth-youngest roster in the NBA and uses a rotation is the only division leader around the bottom 10. The loss of Gordon Hayward obviously changed the course of the season by putting second-year wing Jaylen Brown and rookie forward Jayson Tatum in heightened roles, but there?s always been a threat that the fountain of youth runs dry or needs fresher batteries.

The Celtics are 5-5 and it wouldn?t be surprising see a bit of a letdown continue. Tatum and fellow rookies Semi Ojeleye, Daniel Theis and Abdel Nader will be making their first visit to Denver as pros, closing out what will be the longest trip of their rookie season, exclusively on the West Coast at that. Boston lost at home to New Orleans, Philadelphia and lowly Orlando before departing, so things really hadn?t been going well even before this trip.

That made Saturday night?s 109-105 loss in Oakland a blessing instead of the latest setback. Al Horford called it ?a step forward.?

The team with the Eastern Conference?s best record is talking about moral victories. There?s nothing wrong with it either, given that Boston has performed better than anyone could?ve envisioned, overachieving to this point.

The Celtics are experiencing some turbulence, which should answer your question as to how a team being seriously talked about as an NBA Finals contender can be a road underdog in Denver. Kyrie Irving was fantastic against the Warriors, scoring 37 points. Over his past four games, he?s averaging 32.5 points and shooting 59 percent from the field and 16-for-32 from 3-point range.

The Nuggets would be the Western Conference?s No. 8 seed if the playoffs started today, but they?ve won three straight, a season-high, all at home. The last two victims were the Knicks and Mavs, so this will be a step up. Denver barely beat Dallas after a sloppy stretch nearly buried the team as an 8-point favorite, forcing a frantic fourth-quarter comeback. The Nuggets are 7-4 in their last 11 games laying points, but are just 4-6-1 against the spread.

Nikola Jokic comes off his second triple-double of the season in the win over Dallas, but scored just 11 points and is mired in a shooting slump, coming in at a 40 percent clip from the field this month. After owning a lethal touch from the perimeter that made him impossible to defend over the season?s first two months, he?s shooting 26 percent from 3-point range over the last two, hitting just 12 of his last 48. He?s taking an average of four and his turnovers are up, so we?ll see if Horford?s defense can give the Celtics an edge.

Jokic was out of the lineup with a severe ankle sprain when these teams squared off on Dec. 13, so Boston will have to deal with his elite passing and high motor even if his shot continues to elude him. Horford missed the first meeting with a right knee bruise and Nuggets wing Will Barton sat out with a lower back bruise.

Denver point guard Jamal Murray was benched for a disciplinary issue on Saturday but had a big fourth quarter to help bail out the Mavs. His 28 points and 11 boards, combined with Gary Harris? 36 points, kept the Nuggets in a 124-118 loss at TD Garden.

Kyrie Irving scored 33 points on 12-for-19 shooting, while Brown shot 9-for-12 and backup point guard Shane Larkin shot 6-for-6. The Celtics shot 59.5 percent and ended up being their best-shooting night and highest-scoring game of the season.

Denver also managed an opponent high that still hasn?t been eclipsed. That game obviously went over 208, but the under has prevailed in 14 of the Nuggets? last 18 games. Boston has won five of seven in the series, winning two of the last three in the Mile-High City.

The Celtics could be short-handed since Marcus Smart remains out with a hand injury and fellow guard Terry Rozier is nursing an ankle sprain that could keep him out. Nuggets SF Wilson Chandler is questionable after leaving Saturday?s game due to a migraine headache.

Back-to-back dilemma

Joel Embiid was trolling Russell Westbrook on Instagram despite the 76ers Sunday night loss, calling the clip of his massive dunk over the Thunder star a ?crime scene.? Before getting around to that bit of business, he was already posturing to participate in Monday?s contest in Milwaukee.

Embiid has yet to play in a back-to-back all season but feels he?s ready to begin doing so. That decision isn?t likely to be a game-time decision since it depends on how the All-Star center feels in the morning, and the presumption is that Philadelphia is finally ready to let him start participating normally after being extremely cautious with his knees since drafting him.

?Obviously I really want to play,? he told CSN Philly?s Jessica Camerato prior to the OKC loss. ?I feel like that?s the missing part of my NBA career.?

Afterward, he reiterated his stance that he?s feeling great and in for the challenge, adding that if the team wants to win, he should be out there playing.

Embiid?s participation means we could get three of the most unique players in the game out on the floor for the first time, since Giannis Antetokounmpo missed last week?s meeting, a 116-94 rout in Philadelphia, resting a sore knee. It will be interesting to see whether he?ll participate, but he has played on the second night of the Bucks? last three back-to-back situations.

Embiid and Simmons combined to shoot 19-for-32 and put up 45 points, 17 boards and 10 assists despite barely playing over 30 minutes apiece against the Bucks.

Milwaukee is 3-0 under interim head coach Joe Prunty after dominating the Bulls in Chicago on Sunday. Jabari Parker is due back later this week but won?t be a part of this one. Reigning Rookie of the Year Malcolm Brogdon is also questionable after missing the past few games due to a calf injury. These teams are currently running sixth and eighth in the Eastern Conference, separated by a single game. The under is 8-2 in the Bucks? last 10 games, with the loss in Philly one of the anomalies.

Injury report

The Suns don't know if they'll have Devin Booker available against Memphis. He exited early in Friday night's loss to the Knicks with a hand injury and returned to play over 40 minutes in Sunday afternoon's loss in Houston. Post-game, he told reporters he'd injured his ribs and hip, requiring x-rays upon arriving in Memphis. Center Tyson Chandler (illness) returned but isn't a sure bet to play in this back-back, while Alex Len (ankle) has missed the past few games. The Suns are playing for a third time in four nights and could rest SF T.J. Warren, who has played through knee soreness.

The Grizzlies have multiple question marks too, since Tyreke Evans (ill), Deyonta Davis (knee) and Ben McLemore (knee) could be game-time decisins. JaMychal Green (ankle), James Ennis (calf) and Chandler Parsons (knee) have been ruled out.

Dallas guard J.J. Barea has an oblique injury that may keep him out of action against his old pals, the Heat, who he helped beat for a title in 2011. Dirk Nowitzki is the only other holdover from that team, while only Udonis Haslem remains for Miami. Backup Mavs guard Devin Harris remains in concussion protocol.
