Last night's ATS Records
NBA: 3-3 | NCAA BB: 3-2
I had plays on every CollegeInsider Tournament contest and already caught a tough loss you can credit March madness for. The college lock came in and both CIT totals hit, but the NBA guarantee came up short. Here is Monday's recap, complete with some of the highlights (and lowlights):

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx SELECTION

The pick: Jazz -8

I hope Stan Van Gundy gets a crack at coaching the team he's helped put together when the Pistons shake up their current structure this offseason, but right now, it's unfair to expect much out of his team. Reggie Bullock joins Stanley Johnson in being hampered by back issues, so an already thin wing rotation is hurting. Reggie Jackson is close to returning, but his continued absence means Ish Smith, Jameer Nelson and Dwight Buycks continue in his place. Watching Brandon Jennings go off last night in his NBA return with the Bucks probably didn't sit too well with Detroit fans. Look for the Jazz to roll to a seventh straight win here. They've won the last four by double-digits and will do so again. Ride Utah and lay the points.

xxxxxxxxxxx SELECTION

The pick: Bucks -7.5

Slowly but surely, Jabari Parker is working the rust off his game and becoming a factor as new head coach Joe Prunty gets to work on experimenting with putting his best lineups out there. The Bucks have been terrible against the spread of late, covering just one of their last eight games in a 2-9 run since Feb. 13, but have won and covered in their last three games as a road favorite and should control a game against a Grizzlies team that is been held 280 or fewer points and their last two contests. Ride Milwaukee.

Result: Milwaukee hooked up the freebie fans with a stress-free 121-103 rout in Memphis. It's on you if there were nervous mements when the Grizzlies closed within six with 6:30 to go, but you shouldn't be so skittish. The Bucks outscored Memphis 24-12 from that point to win 121-103. Brandon Jennings returned to the NBA with 16 points, eight boards and 12 assists in under 24 minutes of action. Anyone offering odds on him getting a second 10-day contract?

MONDAY'S LOCK

The pick: San Diego -9.5

Although USD head coach Lamont Smith resigned due to a sexual assault investigation, he ultimately wasn't charged. It sounds like the school is moving on, but his acquittal should make it easier for players to turn the page and this tournament offers a nice opportunity. The Torerors were fantastic at the Jenny Craig Pavilion this season and get a Hartford squad with limited depth that had to fly cross-country for this CIT opener. If John Carroll or J.R. Lynch get into foul trouble, this will get ugly. Ride San Diego -9.5, guaranteed.

Result: Hartford showed up ready to play, which kept the Toreros sharp early and allowed them to find a rhythm they sustained throughout despite top scorer Isaiah Pineiro landing in foul trouble. Six scored in double-figures as San Diego won 88-72.

LOCK THAT DIDN'T CLICK

The pick: Spurs/Rockets OVER 209.5

The Spurs will be relying on a team-based approach to offense without LaMarcus Aldridge in the mix, so Rudy Gay will likely have to be aggressive and isn't at 100% to trust in that role yet. With Manu Ginobili resting and Kawhi Leonard not debuting until later in the week, the Spurs are extremely vulnerable heading into Houston, where a fan base that hasn't seen its team in a while is set to pack the house for a rivalry game. With James Harden back, the Rockets are going to find easy offense and proved in Dallas that this road trip hasn't done anything to cool off their strokes or tire their legs. The Spurs are going to have to score to hang around, which means they can't slow the game down to have any shot. Ride the over, guaranteed.

Result: I wound up splitting here since the Rockets covered, but the Spurs getting so bogged down early doomed this play. Houston held San Antonio to 67 points through three quarters and 40.7 percent shooting for the evening.

BAD BEAT BULLETIN

The pick: Drake -8.5

Abilene Christian found out that it would make its postseason debut a few days ago since they didn't qualify for even the Southland Tourney. The Wildcats are extremely limited in terms of depth, so they can't afford Jalone Friday or Jaren Lewis landing in foul trouble. Keeping both out against a team that can attack proficiently is unlikely, so expect Reed Timmer to be able to close out a double-digit win down the stretch, keeping Abilene Christian from hanging around. Ride Drake -8.5.

Result: Friday did land in foul trouble and the Bulldogs pulled away in the second half, reaching the 2:00 mark up by 10 after a Nick McGlynn layup. Abilene Christian than forced OT with a 10-0 run highlighted by sloppy Drake turnovers. Drake won in OT, but it finished 80-73.

TOTAL RECALL

The pick: Liberty/North Carolina A&T UNDER 141

This is an awfully high total for a Ritchie McKay-coached team, especially given the fact that unlike many MEAC teams, the Aggies don't prefer to run at all costs. They have bigs who can at least make their presence felt down low, so unless we get a bad whistle, I don't see these teams combining to reach this total. Ride the under in this CIT contest.

Result: This wasn't in doubt after the opening tip-off, and at one point, I think the Flames caught fire -- sorry -- and hit seven straight shots. Liberty won 65-52.

UPSET CITY

The pick: IPFW -5

The Mastodons have a huge edge here, getting to roll out of bed ready to play this morning in their home gym against a team that is going to run with them. On TV, too. Look for a wide open game in this CIT opener, which you can watch on CBS College Sports Network. Ride IPFW and the over for the in-game parlay.

Result: Central Michigan pulled off the first upset of the week, claiming the first postseason tourney game 94-89 in Fort Wayne. The Mastodons had their chances to take control, but missed too many wide open 3-point looks they typically make.

SWING AND A MISS

The pick: Heat +7

The Heat know they have to push tempo to stay engaged in Portland given how well Damian Lillard and C.J. McCollum are playing, so look for the faster pace that prevailed against Washington to be in play here, especially with Hassan Whiteside and Dwyane Wade, both ball-stoppers, sidelined here. The Heat should hang around. Take the points with Miami and ride the over for the in-game parlay.

Result: Miami made a late run, but was largely overwhelmed by Portland's Damian Lillard and Jusuf Nurkic in a 115-99 loss. Those two combined for 59 points to lead the Trail Blazers to their league-best 10th consecutive win.

Turner helps Pacers beat 76ers 101-98
March 13, 2018

PHILADELPHIA (AP) Myles Turner scored 25 points, including two clutch free throws with 21.5 seconds remaining, and the Indiana Pacers beat the Philadelphia 76ers 101-98 on Tuesday night in a possible Eastern Conference playoff preview.

Thaddeus Young added 19 points and 10 rebounds for the surprising Pacers (40-28), who overcame an off shooting night by leading scorer Victor Oladipo to win their third straight and improve to a season-high 12 games over .500. They were coming off a 99-97 victory at Boston on Sunday night.

Joel Embiid had 29 points and 12 rebounds and Ben Simmons finished with 10 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists for the 76ers (36-30), who had won 13 straight home games.

TIMBERWOLVES 116, WIZARDS 111

WASHINGTON (AP) - Minnesota star Karl-Anthony Towns recovered from a shot to the mouth that left him down on the court and finished with 37 points and 10 rebounds.

Towns shot 13 for 17, including making all three of his 3-point attempts, and showed no ill effects after getting knocked in the face with about a minute left in the first half.

A 20-3 run capped by an inside basket from Andrew Wiggins off Towns' assist put Minnesota up 105-98 with less than 5 1/2 minutes to go. After the Wizards got within 111-109, Towns sank a corner 3 with 29 seconds left to push the visitors' lead back up to five.

Markieff Morris led Washington with a season-high 27 points, and Bradley Beal added 19.

THUNDER 119, HAWKS 107

ATLANTA (AP) - Russell Westbrook picked up the 100th triple-double of his career, and the Thunder used a 16-0 run late in the fourth quarter to pull away from the Hawks.

Westbrook scored 32 points, dished out 12 assists and grabbed 12 rebounds to become the third-fastest player to reach the milestone. Only Oscar Robertson (277 games) and Magic Johnson (656) got to No. 100 quicker than Westbrook, who accomplished the feat in his 736th contest.

Taurean Prince led the Hawks with 25 points.

RAPTORS 116, NETS 102

NEW YORK (AP) - Jonas Valanciunas had 26 points and 14 rebounds, and Toronto earned its ninth straight win.

DeMar DeRozan and reserve Fred VanVleet scored 15 points apiece, and Kyle Lowry added 11 points and 11 assists for the Eastern Conference-leading Raptors, who held Brooklyn to 35 points after halftime and won a franchise record-tying seventh straight road game.

D'Angelo Russell hit his first seven shots - all 3-pointers - and scored 24 points in the first quarter for the Nets, who have lost 11 straight to the Raptors. Russell finished with 32 points, and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson scored 19.

JAZZ 110, PISTONS 79

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Rudy Gobert had 22 points and 12 rebounds, sending Utah to its seventh consecutive victory.

The Jazz had six players score in double figures. Joe Ingles added 17 points, seven assists and seven rebounds, and Jonas Jerebko had 16 points and eight rebounds.

Luke Kennard scored 18 points and Andre Drummond had 13 points and 11 rebounds for the Pistons, who have lost 11 of 14.

Donovan Mitchell hit a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to end the third quarter and put the Jazz ahead 81-51.

PELICANS 119, HORNETS 115

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Anthony Davis had 31 points, 14 rebounds and five blocked shots, leading New Orleans to the victory.

Rajon Rondo added 12 points and 17 assists and Jrue Holiday highlighted a 25-point, nine-assist performance with 10 points in the final 2:39, starting with a 3 that put the Pelicans in front.

Holiday's second 3 in that stretch widened New Orleans' lead to five points with 1:19 to go and he added a driving finger roll that made it 117-110 with 30 seconds left. The Pelicans had dropped two in a row.

Dwight Howard had 22 points, 11 rebounds and three blocked shots for Charlotte, while Kemba Walker added 22 points.

MAVERICKS 110, KNICKS 97

NEW YORK (AP) - Harrison Barnes scored 30 points, and the Mavericks handed the Knicks their eighth straight loss.

Dallas couldn't stop New York early, and then dominated the second half to win for the third time in four games, with only a loss to NBA-leading Houston in that stretch.

Rookie Dennis Smith Jr. added 17 points for the Mavs and Dirk Nowitzki had 13.

Michael Beasley scored 21 and Tim Hardaway Jr. had 19 for the Knicks, who got a visit from Kristaps Porzingis before the game and then showed again that they have no hope of winning without him. They lost for the 16th time in 17 games, most coming since their All-Star forward tore his left ACL on Feb. 6.

CLIPPERS 112, BULLS 106

CHICAGO (AP) - DeAndre Jordan dominated with 29 points and 18 rebounds, leading the Clippers to the road win.

Lou Williams scored 26 and Tobias Harris had 18 points for Los Angeles, which took control late in the third quarter on the way to its fifth win in six games.

Bobby Portis led Chicago with 19 points and nine rebounds. Kris Dunn added 18 points and six assists. But with Lauri Markkanen sidelined by lower back spasms, the Bulls lost for the eighth time in 11 games.

SPURS 108, MAGIC 72

SAN ANTONIO (AP) - LaMarcus Aldridge scored 24 points, helping San Antonio stop a three-game slide.

The Spurs led 62-37 at halftime and extended that cushion to 39 entering the fourth quarter.

Patty Mills had 13 points for San Antonio, and Dejounte Murray, Danny Green and Pau Gasol each had 11.

Orlando has lost five straight and 12 of 14. Nikola Vucevic and Jonathon Simmons each had 10 points for the Magic.

Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

Some prop bets for the NCAA tournament; wins by conference:

? ACC? 14 wins

? Big East? 8.5 wins

? Big X? 8.5 wins

? #1 seeds? 11.5 wins

? #2 seeds? 10.5 wins

? #3 seeds? 8 wins

**********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Mid-week musings??.

13) Minnesota Vikings made their decision; they give Kirk Cousins $84M for three years, all fully guaranteed, to be their QB. Cousins has a 26-30-1 career W-L record, 0-1 in playoffs.

12) Minnesota went 11-3 with Case Keenum at QB LY; Keenum signed with the Broncos on Monday; he threw for 3,547 yards and 22 TD?s last season.

11) Drew Brees re-signed with the Saints; he turned down $60M guaranteed from someone else (Cardinals? Vikings?) before deciding to stay in New Orleans.

10) Cardinals gave oft-injured QB Sam Bradford $20 ($15M guaranteed) for one year. As a long-time Ram fan, I endorse the Keenum signing; the Bradford signing? Not so much.

9) Jets signed Teddy Bridgewater and re-signed Josh McCown, meaning they probably ain?t drafting another quarterback next month.

8) Gonzaga lost the national title game 71-65 last April, ending an odd run to the Final Four- they were 1-4-1 vs spread in their NCAA tournament games last spring.

7) Florida made the Elite 8 in each of its last five NCAA tournaments- hard to do that.

6) Since 2010, Villanova is 5-2 in its first-round games, 1-4 in second round games; the one time they won in second round, they won national title two years ago.

5) Arkansas is probably glad just to be in a different region than North Carolina this year; last three times the Razorbacks made the NCAA?s, they lost to the Tar Heels in the second round. If they play UNC in this year?s tournament, it?ll be in the Final Four.

4) Why gambling on NIT/CBI/CIT games can be dicey; USC star Chimezie Metu sat out Trojans? NIT game Tuesday, for no reason except he didn?t want to get hurt. Not sure that Metu will get picked in the first round of the NBA Draft? he is a junior, so if he got hurt, he could come back to school next year, but it is a free country, and he chose not to play.

Late night update: With Metu sitting on bench, NC-Asheville played its heart out but fell short, losing 103-98 in double OT at USC- they led by six points in overtime.

3) Virginia loses its best guy off the bench, DeAndre Hunter for the season with a broken wrist.

2) Radford 71, LIU 61? Radford advances to play Villanova Thursday; no 16-seed has ever beaten a #1-seed. Last nine years, #16-seeds who won the play-in game are 7-11 vs spread in their next game, against a #1-seed.

1? St Bonaventure 65, UCLA 58? Season that started with shoplifting in China ended with an ugly loss on a Tuesday night in Dayton. Bruins turned ball over 20 times (-14), shot 10-30 on arc. Bonnies? Stocker was doubtful to play, then played all 40:00, scored 26 points- they won despite star Adams going 2-16 from the floor.

Wednesday's Tip Sheet
March 14, 2018

Game of the Night: Wizards (-3, 204 ?) at Celtics ? 8:00 PM EST

These two Eastern Conference squads played seven games in their second round playoff series last season with the home team winning each time. So of course the first two meetings this season have seen the road squad capturing victory in each instance. The Wizards (38-30 SU, 32-35-1 ATS) knocked off the Celtics on Christmas day, 111-103 as four-point underdogs at TD Garden, but Boston downed Washington in overtime in D.C. on February 8 by a 110-104 count as two-point favorites.

The Celtics (46-21 SU, 40-25-2 ATS) are the walking wounded currently as forward Marcus Smart is sidelined with a right thumb injury, while leading scorer Kyrie Irving will miss tonight?s contest with a sore left knee. On top of those injuries, forward Al Horford is questionable with an illness, as the Celtics try to rebound from a 99-97 home setback to the Pacers on Sunday as 4 ?-point favorites.

Washington travels to Beantown following a 116-111 home loss to Minnesota on Tuesday after blowing an eight-point lead going into the final quarter. Markieff Morris led the Wizards with 27 points, but Washington was outscored, 34-21 in the last 12 minutes of the game to drop to 2-9-1 ATS in the past 12 opportunities as a home favorite. The Wizards own a mediocre mark when playing with no rest at 5-6 SU/ATS, including a 2-3 SU and 3-2 ATS mark on the road in this role.

Lake Night in Oakland

The Lakers (31-36 SU, 37-30 ATS) began the season at 11-27, but the Purple and Gold has rolled to a 20-9 record the past 29 games. The latest victory came against the Nuggets on Tuesday, 112-103 as two-point underdogs to improve to 12-1 in the previous 13 contests at Staples Center. Both Kyle Kuzma and Julius Randle posted exact 26-point and 13-rebound stat lines for Los Angeles, while knocking down 15 three-pointers.

Los Angeles travels up I-5 to face Golden State (51-16 SU, 28-38-1 ATS), who will be without several of its stars. Stephen Curry remains sidelined with an ankle injury suffered last week against San Antonio, while Draymond Green will sit with right shoulder soreness. The Warriors return home following a pair of road defeats at Portland and Minnesota, while Steve Kerr?s squad has failed to cover the number in six straight games.

The Lakers have cashed in all three matchups with the Warriors this season, including taking two of those games to overtime at Staples Center. In the most recent meeting at Oracle Arena in late December, the Warriors held off the Lakers, 113-106, but L.A. took home the money as 11 ?-point underdogs. All three games have sailed OVER the total, but the Warriors are currently on a 5-1 UNDER run.

Cold Road

The Heat (36-32 SU, 34-29-5 ATS) have received a boost since acquiring former franchise star Dwyane Wade by winning seven of eight home games. However, Miami has struggled on the highway by losing all five road games since Wade returned, while the Heat have dropped eight consecutive contests away from American Airlines Arena. The most recent setback came at Portland on Monday, 115-99 as six-point underdogs, while Wade and Hassan Whiteside each sat out due to injury.

Both players will sit again tonight as the Heat visit Sacramento (21-47 SU, 31-34-3 ATS), who posted a 3-2 record on its most recent homestand. The Kings are fresh off a pair of road losses at Denver and Oklahoma City, but managed a cover as 13 ?-point underdogs in Monday?s 106-101 defeat to the Thunder. Sacramento shocked Miami on January 25 as 9 ?-point ?dogs, 89-88, ending a six-game losing streak to the Heat dating back to 2015.

Out of Tricks

A brutal season for Orlando (20-48 SU, 32-35-1 ATS) hit a low point on Tuesday in a 108-72 setback at San Antonio as 10 ?-point underdogs. The Magic lost all five games on their road swing, while dropping eight consecutive contests away from central Florida since mid-February. Orlando has won two straight at home as the Magic try to extend that streak as the Bucks invade Amway Center.

Milwaukee (36-31 SU, 27-35-5 ATS) is riding a two-game hot streak following a 1-6 stretch as the Bucks blew out the hapless Grizzlies on Monday, 121-103. Since the start of February, the Bucks own a dreadful 6-12 ATS record, including a 3-7 ATS ledger as a favorite. Milwaukee has captured the first two matchups with Orlando this season, including a 111-104 road victory as five-point favorites on February 10.

Warriors beat Lakers 117-106 despite missing 3 All-Stars
March 15, 2018

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) Kevin Durant scored 26 points and the injury-plagued Golden State Warriors pulled away in the fourth quarter to beat the Los Angeles Lakers 117-106 on Wednesday night while missing Stephen Curry on his 30th birthday and their two other All-Stars.

Zaza Pachulia returned to the starting lineup for the first time since the All-Star break and had 10 points, 12 rebounds and five assists for the banged-up defending champions, who already had clinched a sixth straight playoff berth this week without playing.

Coach Steve Kerr's non-traditional, late-season starting lineup of Durant, Quinn Cook, Nick Young, Kevon Looney and Pachulia worked as the Warriors won their eighth straight home game.

Julius Randle had 22 points and 10 rebounds before fouling out late as the Lakers were without starting forward Kyle Kuzma because of a sprained right ankle. Los Angeles had won two straight and three of four. Isaiah Thomas added 20 points with five 3-poitners and seven assists, while Lonzo Ball dished out 11 assists.

WIZARDS 125, CELTICS 124, 2 OT

BOSTON (AP) - Bradley Beal scored 34 points, including a three-point play with 1:25 left in the second overtime, and Washington beat short-handed Boston.

Jayson Tatum missed a 3-pointer just before the buzzer that could have won it for the Celtics, who were without six players and missed several opportunities to put away the Wizards.

Otto Porter Jr. finished with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Markieff Morris scored 20 points, Ian Mahinmi added 14 and Tomas Satoransky had 10 points for Washington, which played the night before but still had enough energy at the end to rally past the weary Celtics, who blew a 20-point lead.

Boston patched together a lineup without All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving (knee) and center Al Horford (illness), two of the four regulars who were sidelined.

Marcus Morris led Boston with 31 points and pulled down 19 rebounds, but made a costly defensive error in the closing seconds of regulation. Terry Rozier added 21 points and nine assists, and Tatum scored 19 points for the Celtics.

MAGIC 126, BUCKS 117

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) - Jonathon Simmons scored a career-high 35 points, D.J. Augustin added 32 and Orlando bounced back from an embarrassing defeat to beat Milwaukee.

Simmons was 7 of 12 from 3-point range and Augustin hit 6 of 9, three of them in the fourth quarter to help Orlando pull away.

Nikola Vucevic had 22 points, nine rebounds and nine assists for the Magic, who were routed 108-72 Tuesday night in San Antonio, their fifth straight loss.

Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 38 points for Milwaukee, which has lost seven of 10.

KINGS 123, HEAT 119, OT

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - De'Aaron Fox made a layup at the buzzer to force overtime, Zach Randolph scored the first three points of the extra period and finished with 22, and Sacramento recovered after blowing a 16-point lead in the fourth quarter to beat Miami.

Randolph added a key block on Justise Winslow with 1:19 remaining in OT as Sacramento swept Miami for the first time since 2001-02.

That overshadowed an impressive night by Miami's Goran Dragic, who scored 11 straight points in the fourth quarter to fuel the Heat's comeback and matched his season high of 33 points. But Dragic missed a tying turnaround jumper with 20 seconds left in overtime, then stepped out of bounds with the ball with 12.3 remaining.

Randolph had the first three points in overtime with a free throw and 17-foot jumper. Fox made a short runner, Bogdan Bogdanovic hit a 28-foot 3-pointer and Buddy Hield added four free throws.

Hield finished with 24 points, Fox had 20 and Bogdanovic added 14 for Sacramento.

Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

Some prop bets for the NCAA tournament; wins by team: (Westgate SuperBook)

? wins for Villanova, 3.5 (under -$120)

? wins for Duke, 3 (under -$130)

? wins for Michigan State, 2.5 (under -$135)

? wins for Virginia, 4 (under -$140)

? wins for North Carolina 2.5 (under -$140)

? wins for Michigan 2 (under -$130

**********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud??

13) USC star Chimezie Metu sat out the Trojans? NIT game Tuesday, because he doesn?t want to get hurt before the NBA Draft, which is in late June. This ignited a heated Twitter debate.

I?ll say this: Metu has the right to do as he pleases, it is a free country. But??.

In 2000, Kenyon Martin was the star of a Cincinnati team that was going to be a #1-seed in the NCAA?s, but in the first round of the C-USA tournament, he broke his leg and also injured knee ligaments, the kind of disastrous injury that Metu obviously fears now.

Long story short: Martin was still picked 1st in the NBA Draft that year; he played 15 years in the NBA, scored over 9,200 points and earned $113M in his career.

My opinion is that you should finish what you start, but thats just my opinion.

12) Klay Thompson has apparently broken his right thumb, will miss at least four games; he hasn?t missed more than five games in a season since he became a full-time starter.

11) Stupid new baseball rule: In minor league baseball this year, all extra innings will start with a runner on second base. I?m beginning to think the people who run baseball don?t like baseball.

10) Patrick Beilein is the 34-year old coach at LeMoyne, a D-II school in Syracuse; he is the son of Michigan coach John Beilein. It has been rumored that Patrick Beilein has already gotten three job offers from D-I schools this spring.

9) Ole Miss is going to hire Middle Tennessee State coach Kermit Davis, whose dad used to be the coach at Mississippi State. Rough couple weeks for the Blue Raiders, who got screwed out of an NCAA tournament bid and now are losing their coach of the last 16 years.

8) Memphis went 21-13 this year, but apparently they fired Tubby Smith this week and will hire Anfernee Hardaway as his replacement. John Calipari spoiled this fanbase forever; they ran Josh Pastner out of town after he went 166-73 with the Tigers and now they got rid of Tubby, whose career record is 597-302. Tough town.

7) Evansville fired Marty Simmons after 11 years and zero NCAA tournament bids; he went 25-9, 24-12 two and three years ago, but didn?t win Arch Madness so now he is unemployed.

6) Arizona Cardinals signed Mike Glennon as their backup QB, which is a good thing if they?re going to start Sam Bradford at QB this fall.

Bradford has a 34-45-1 W-L record in NFL, missing 48 games in his eight NFL seasons. He has a very bad knee that Mike Zimmer recently called ?degenerative.? He is not dependable.

5) There are 11 teams in this year?s NIT that would be favored over Syracuse on a neutral floor.

4) Toys ?r Us is closing its 800 stores in this country; that just sounds kind of sad.

3) Cleveland Browns? tackle Joe Thomas retired this week; the man played 10,363 consecutive snaps in the NFL without missing a play, which is astounding for an offensive lineman.

2) Saw a baseball shift this week I?ve never seen before; Kris Bryant is batting for the Cubs with a man on 3rd. San Diego put three infielders on the left side of the infield, and the 1B almost halfway to 2B. If Bryant hits the ball to the right side of the infield, not sure how they get him out, unless he hits it hard right at the first baseman.

1? Dee Gordon is playing centerfield for the Mariners this spring, at least he was until Robinson Cano strained a hamstring. Seattle?s TV guys were bragging on the Mariners? bullpen, so we?ll see how well they do this season.

Rockets beat Clippers, clinch Southwest Division title
March 16, 2018

HOUSTON (AP) James Harden scored 24 points, Eric Gordon added 23 and the Houston Rockets outlasted the Los Angeles Clippers for a 101-96 victory on Thursday night.

The Clippers scored six straight points, with four from Austin Rivers, to cut the lead to a basket with less than a minute left. But on the next possession, Harden stepped back and knocked down a long 2-pointer with Rivers in his face to make it 100-96.

Rivers missed a 3-pointer after that before Harden made one of two free throws with 6.2 seconds left to secure the victory.

It's Houston's third straight win and snaps a three-game winning streak for the Clippers. The victory, coupled with a loss by the Pelicans to the Spurs, wrapped up the Southwest Division title for the Rockets.

Tobias Harris led the Clippers with 29 points and Rivers had 20.

TRAIL BLAZERS 113, CAVALIERS 105

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - CJ McCollum scored 29 points and Portland won its NBA-best 11th straight game with a victory over Cleveland.

Damian Lillard added 24 points for the Blazers, on their longest run since also winning 11 in a row in 2013. It was the Blazers' eighth straight win at home.

LeBron James had 35 points, including a highlight-reel dunk in the first quarter that had the fans at the Moda Center momentarily stunned. He also had 14 rebounds for his sixth straight double-double. Kyle Korver added 19 points.

RAPTORS 106, PACERS 99

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - DeMar DeRozan scored 24 points, Jonas Valanciunas added 16 points and 17 rebounds, and Toronto rallied late to get past Indiana for its 10th straight victory.

The Raptors need one more win to tie the franchise's longest winning streak. They haven't lost since Feb. 23 and broke a tie with the 2016-17 squad for longest road winning streak, which is now at eight.

But it sure wasn't easy on a night Darren Collison scored 22 points and Al Jefferson had a season-high 20 for Indiana.

SPURS 98, PELICANS 93

SAN ANTONIO (AP) - LaMarcus Aldridge scored 25 points, Dejounte Murray had 18 points and 12 rebounds, and San Antonio overcame another late rally to beat New Orleans.

New Orleans was playing hours after learning Pelicans owner Tom Benson had died. Benson was hospitalized with the flu on Feb. 16 and never recovered. The 90-year-old native of San Antonio owned both the Pelicans and the Saints.

Anthony Davis finished with 21 points and 14 rebounds, but fouled out after playing 36 minutes. New Orleans fell to sixth in the West.

76ERS 118, KNICKS 110

NEW YORK (AP) - Joel Embiid had 29 points and 10 rebounds, Ben Simmons finished with a triple-double, and Philadelphia used a big final period to rally past New York.

The Sixers, who hold the sixth spot in the Eastern Conference playoff race, trailed by as many as 13 points in the third quarter before storming back in the final period, going on a 20-6 run during the last five minutes of regulation.

Simmons finished with 13 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds.

Michael Beasley had 24 points and 13 rebounds, and Courtney Lee and Trey Burke each contributed 16 points for the Knicks, who have lost a season-high nine straight games and 17 of 18. The Knicks' last win came on Feb. 22 at Orlando.

NUGGETS 120, PISTONS 113

DENVER (AP) - Nikola Jokic had 23 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists for his eighth triple-double of the season, Jamal Murray added 26 points and Denver's playoff hopes received a much-needed boost with a victory over Detroit.

Will Barton hit a big basket down the stretch and later knocked down two free throws to help the Nuggets hold off a Pistons team that trailed by as many as 26 points in the third quarter. The Nuggets now hit the road for a pivotal seven-game trip.

The fading Pistons dropped their 11th straight road game despite Andre Drummond scoring 21 points and grabbing 17 rebounds. Blake Griffin added 26 points and nine assists.

Jokic's eight triple-doubles are the most by a Nuggets player in a season since Fat Lever had nine in 1988-89.

JAZZ 116, SUNS 88

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Donovan Mitchell scored 23 points and Rudy Gobert had 21 points and 13 rebounds to lead Utah over Phoenix, its eighth consecutive victory.

Joe Ingles scored 17 points, including four 3-pointers, and Jae Crowder added 12 for the Jazz, who have won 20 of their last 22 games.

T.J. Warren paced Phoenix with 19 points while Josh Jackson had 17 and Devin Booker had 12. The Suns have lost seven in a row.

Ricky Rubio had 12 points and 11 assists, and Dante Exum made his first appearance of the season for the Jazz and finished with 10 points.

HORNETS 129, HAWKS 117

ATLANTA (AP) - Dwight Howard scored 20 of his season-high 33 points in the second half, Nicolas Batum had a triple-double and set a career high with 16 assists, and Charlotte beat Atlanta.

Kemba Walker added 24 points and Marvin Williams had 17 for Charlotte, which kept its slim playoff hopes alive. The Hornets began the night having lost six of seven and were in 10th place in the Eastern Conference, 6+ games behind No. 8 Miami with 13 games remaining.

Taurean Prince finished with 22 points and rookie John Collins tied a career high with 21 for Atlanta, the worst team in the East at 20-49.

BULLS 111, GRIZZLIES 110

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Antonio Blakeney made two of three free throws with 1.8 seconds left as Chicago handed Memphis its 19th straight loss.

On the game's final play, Memphis got the ball to Marc Gasol for a baseline fadeaway that was long. JaMychal Green tipped it in but after the horn, although it appeared to be basket interference anyway.

Zach LaVine led the Bulls with 20 points while playing only three quarters, while Bobby Portis scored 17. Denzel Valentine had 15 points, going 5 of 7 from outside the arc.

Tyreke Evans had 25 points and nine assists for Memphis, while Gasol added 21 points and 10 rebounds. Jarell Martin scored 15 points and Green finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

?I say that after a lot of reflection and mostly a lot of belief that, ultimately, what is the most important thing in life is to be happy. As much as it was a great honor to be the voice of ?Monday Night Football? ? and you guys know me well enough, and certainly a lot of my friends and family do ? it wasn?t a tremendous amount of fun the last two years??.?
ESPN?s Sean McDonough, who will no longer be on Monday Night Football

Thursday?s quiz
No #16-seed has ever beaten a #1-seed in the NCAA tournament.

Wednesday?s quiz

James Harden played his college basketball at Arizona State.

Friday?s Den: Wrapping up a basketball Thursday

Night Games
16) Buffalo 89, Arizona 68? Complete ass-kicking; Bulls outhustled Arizona, they made 15-30 on the arc and they looked like the better team. Arizona kids quit in the last 10:00.

This is first time since 2012 a MAC team won an NCAA tournament game; it is only the second time in last eight years Arizona didn?t make the Sweet 16. With all their legal issues, could be a long time before they get there again.

15) Houston 67, San Diego State 65? Rob Gray scored 39 of Houston?s 67 points, including the game-winner with 0:01 left; I don?t want to say he?s a ballhog, but he took 25 shots, 15 more foul shots and he had zero assists. It is amazing how he dominates the ball, but he made 12-25 from the floor and the Cougars advance.

14) Alabama 86, Virginia Tech 81? Pet Peeve of the Day; calling a flagrant foul when a defender intrudes the space of the guy with the ball, and the offensive player swings the ball to create space and plugs the defender in the face with the ball or his elbow. Whats he supposed to do?

20 years ago, we used to teach this about rebounding: ?Catch-Tuck-Swing? the ball, and if the guy on the other team didn?t want to get drilled in the face, he?d move his face. Now in our soft society, that would be a foul on the guy with the ball, maybe a flagrant foul. It shouldn?t be.

13) Kentucky 78, Davidson 73? Davidson hit a 3-ball with 0:00.6 to cover the spread, but now Kentucky plays Buffalo Saturday for a spot in the Sweet 16.

Kentucky went 0-for-6 outside the arc against Davidson, which ended a 1,047-game streak in which Kentucky made at least one 3-pointer. It was the longest active streak in the country, dating back to November 26, 1988.

12) Texas Tech 70, Stephen F Austin 60? Lumberjacks led by 3 at the half; but Keenan Evans scored 23 points for the Red Raiders and Tech gets their first NCAA tournament win since 2005.

11) Michigan 61, Montana 47? Griz led this game 10-0 early, but Big Sky teams haven?t won a tournament game since 2006- they?re just not good enough to beat a top 20 opponent.

10) Florida 77, St Bonaventure 62? Bonnies made tournament for first time since 2012, beat UCLA Tuesday, but ran out of gas here and got drilled by the Gators, who now play Texas Tech.

I?m still amazed one of the genius AD?s at the big money schools hasn?t scooped up Bonnies? coach Mark Schmidt? he is a very good coach. Ain?t easy to recruit players to Olean, NY.

9) Villanova 87, Radford 61? Worst game of the day, a total mismatch; now the Wildcats face their bugaboo, the second round of the tournament.

Since 2010, Villanova is 1-4 in the second round of the NCAA?s, losing two of last three years in 2nd round as a #1-seed; the one time they won was two years ago, when they went on to win the national title. Villanova plays Virginia Tech Saturday.

Day games
1) Rhode Island 83, Oklahoma 78 OT? First game of the tournament was terrific; Sooners led by 8 late in first half, then trailed by 6 with 4:10 left in regulation, before URI missed a point-blank putback at the buzzer to force OT, where the Rams prevailed.

Oklahoma winds up losing 12 of its last 16 games. URI moves on to play Duke.

2) Loyola Chi 64, Miami FL 62? Donte Ingram stuck a 3-ball with 0:00.3 left to send Ramblers on to the next round in their first NCAA appearance since 1985. Loyola outscored Miami 8-2 over the last 2:47; they were +6 in turnovers (16-10) for the game.

This is the 14th consecutive year that a #11 seed beat a #6 seed

3) Gonzaga 68, NC-Greensboro 64? Games like this are what make the NCAA tournament great. Condescending jerks like Jay Bilas think the NCAA?s should be the best 68 teams in country, rather than the champs from all 32 D-I leagues, but if that were the case, the Spartans wouldn?t have been invited? we?d get the 13th place team in the ACC.

Zags led by 12 with 16:00 left, but UNCG took a 64-62 lead with 1:46 to play- Gonzaga scored the last six points of the game. Exciting game, for sure.

4) Ohio State 81, South Dakota State 73? This game was 70-70 with 1:53 left, but then SD State fouled the 3-point shooter on the next two trips and that was that. Jackrabbits dared Ohio State to shoot 3-pointers; OSU was 12-40 outside the arc, 15-32 inside arc.

South Dakota State?s Mike Daum is an NBA player; he is a sturdy 6-8 guy with 3-point range; he had 27 in this game, and star freshman Jenkins had 16. If those two guys are back in school next year, the Jackrabbits should go dancing again.

5) Duke 89, Iona 67? Gaels shot 38.3% on arc for season; they were 5-24 in this game, as Duke ran out to a 53-39 halftime lead and coasted home from there.

6) Seton Hall 94, NC State 83? Pirates are #55 experience team in country, NC State is #179, which explains this result. Seton Hall led 51-41 at the half and held the Wolfpack off in a game with lot of fouls. Solid first season for Kevin Keatts with NC State, finishing at 21-12. ACC lost two teams already; Wolfpack and Miami.

7) Kansas 76, Penn 60? Quakers led 21-11 early, then reality set in. Penn had a senior named Caleb Wood, only senior in their rotation. He was 4-12 behind the arc in this game, only 12 shots he took all day. He shot 38% behind arc for the year; thats a good gig, just shooting 3?s.

Penn was first Ivy League team to be a 16-seed since Princeton in 1989.

8) Tennessee 73, Wright State 47? Total mismatch, other than first 2:00, when Raiders led 2-0. Vols are just so much more athletic than Wright State. Tennessee has all five of its starters back next year, so they should be even better. Wright State?s only senior starter was Grant Benzinger, son of former major leaguer Todd Benzinger? he was 2-16 from floor in this game.
